  1. Have you ever thought about the variety of ways

  2. that we all use the word love?

  3. I'm gonna guess, hopefully I'm right,

  4. you have told your spouse very recently

  5. that you love her or you love him.

  6. But you may have also said,

  7. or at least you've heard somebody say,

  8. I love my dog.

  9. I love the weather we're having right now.

  10. I love that movie that I saw last week.

  11. I love ice cream.

  12. Now, think.

  13. Do you love ice cream, movies, the weather, and your dog

  14. the same way that you love your spouse?

  15. Now, I hope nobody would say yes.

  16. But I'm just trying to show this word love.

  17. We have a hard time nailing down a definition.

  18. We have a hard way of describing what we mean.

  19. But most people, if you do pin them down,

  20. in some way they will use the word feeling

  21. to describe what they mean by love.

  22. That's the most popular way to describe it today.

  23. You hear it all the time.

  24. Somebody can fall in or out of love.

  25. Some people have a burning love one day,

  26. but later on it burns out.

  27. We just have a difficult time describing what the word love means,

  28. but the Apostle Paul didn't have that problem.

  29. I want you to turn with me to Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  30. and see how he described the love that God intends for his children,

  31. us, to demonstrate toward one another.

  32. And as we go through this, we're going to see,

  33. as Paul describes love,

  34. it's an attitude.

  35. It is a mindset,

  36. not really an emotion.

  37. What we're going to see is that God commands us to love one another.

  38. And you think about it.

  39. If God commands us to do this,

  40. to love one another,

  41. it cannot be a feeling

  42. because you cannot make someone.

  43. You cannot command someone to feel a certain way.

  44. Can you?

  45. No, love is something that we do.

  46. Love is a choice.

  47. Love is a commitment.

  48. It may or may not be

  49. something we feel

  50. in every situation.

  51. This kind of love is described in Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12:9–13

  52. verses 9 through 13.

  53. But before we read this,

  54. I want you to keep something in mind

  55. because what we're going to read,

  56. in some ways you're going to think,

  57. well, this just is impossible.

  58. And it's impossible to love

  59. a certain person

  60. like this.

  61. Keep in mind,

  62. Paul is writing to Christians.

  63. The other long description

  64. or comments on love

  65. is in 1 Corinthians chapter 13.

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  66. Paul wrote 1 Corinthians 13

  67. about what love is

  68. and all these kind of things,

  69. how superior love is

  70. above everything else,

  71. the greatest Christian virtue.

  72. Paul writes in Romans,

  73. he writes in Corinthians

  74. to Christians.

  75. When God saved us,

  76. He put His Spirit in us.

  77. We have the ability,

  78. not because of our strength,

  79. not because we're something special,

  80. we have the ability

  81. because the Spirit of God lives within us,

  82. to love people

  83. just like we're going to read about

  84. in this chapter.

  85. You can love

  86. some hard-to-love people

  87. in your life.

  88. And there are people

  89. who are hard to love.

  90. There are people that

  91. it's just everything within you

  92. as a Christian

  93. to love.

  94. But we can.

  95. The key is

  96. we've got to

  97. cooperate with the Spirit of God

  98. when He prompts us

  99. to keep our mouth closed,

  100. when He prompts us

  101. to act a certain way

  102. towards some of these

  103. hard-to-love people.

  104. We've got to cooperate

  105. with the Holy Spirit

  106. and we've got to learn

  107. to develop this loving attitude

  108. that will translate

  109. into loving actions

  110. like we read about

  111. in these verses.

  112. Romans 12.

  113. Let's read it.

  114. Verses 9 through 13.

  115. Let love be genuine.

  116. Abhor what is evil.

  117. Strongly hate

  118. what is evil.

  119. Hold fast

  120. to what is good.

  121. Love one another

  122. with brotherly affection.

  123. Outdo one another

  124. in showing honor.

  125. Do not be slothful

  126. and zeal.

  127. Be fervent

  128. and spirit.

  129. That's a little s

  130. in most translations.

  131. It is what I'm reading

  132. today in ESV.

  133. He's talking about

  134. our spirit here,

  135. not the Holy Spirit.

  136. Although that's not,

  137. it's possible

  138. He's talking about

  139. the Holy Spirit.

  140. But we're going to

  141. take it as

  142. do not be slothful

  143. and zeal.

  144. Be fervent

  145. in your spirit

  146. as you serve

  147. the Lord.

  148. Rejoice in hope.

  149. Be patient

  150. in tribulation.

  151. Be constant

  152. in prayer.

  153. Contribute to the needs

  154. of the saints

  155. and seek to show

  156. hospitality.

  157. We're in a series

  158. from Romans 12.

  159. We're talking overall

  160. about how God

  161. wants us to live

  162. like a Christian

  163. wherever we are.

  164. We've talked about

  165. living like a Christian

  166. in our relationship

  167. with Him

  168. and really focused on

  169. that requires

  170. wholehearted commitment.

  171. We've talked about

  172. how to live

  173. like a Christian

  174. in the way

  175. that we think

  176. about ourselves.

  177. It means,

  178. as we saw

  179. in verses 3 through 8,

  180. don't think too highly

  181. of yourselves.

  182. Don't be prideful.

  183. But the opposite

  184. of that,

  185. humility,

  186. is not don't think

  187. I can't do anything

  188. that I know anything.

  189. The opposite is

  190. be objective

  191. about yourself.

  192. Be realistic.

  193. You have talents

  194. and gifts

  195. and abilities

  196. that God has given you

  197. and if you'll be

  198. faithful to Him,

  199. you can use

  200. your talents,

  201. gifts,

  202. and abilities

  203. in some great ways

  204. in people's lives

  205. as well as

  206. in serving God.

  207. Now,

  208. in this section,

  209. we're talking about

  210. living like a Christian

  211. in our relationships

  212. specifically

  213. with other Christians.

  214. That means

  215. we're talking about

  216. how we should love

  217. one another

  218. in this church

  219. as brothers and sisters

  220. in Christ.

  221. We're talking about

  222. how you should love,

  223. we should love

  224. other Christians

  225. in our lives

  226. and a lot of you

  227. work with other Christians.

  228. A lot of you

  229. go to school

  230. with people

  231. who are truly Christians.

  232. Some of you

  233. do things

  234. on the weekends,

  235. just interact

  236. with people

  237. in this area,

  238. other places

  239. who are Christians.

  240. We're talking about

  241. the love that exists

  242. among believers

  243. wherever

  244. and get this,

  245. in your home,

  246. if your spouse

  247. is a Christian,

  248. if your children are,

  249. this is how

  250. it's supposed to be

  251. in the way

  252. you relate,

  253. act,

  254. speak

  255. to one another

  256. at home.

  257. Now,

  258. when we read

  259. these verses,

  260. I don't know

  261. if it really

  262. stood out to you

  263. this is all

  264. describing

  265. genuine love.

  266. Verse 9,

  267. the first part,

  268. let love be genuine,

  269. that's sort of

  270. like the statement

  271. and the rest

  272. of this

  273. is a description

  274. of what

  275. genuine

  276. or sincere

  277. love is.

  278. It makes sense

  279. if you think

  280. this is the Apostle

  281. Paul writing

  282. and in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  283. chapter 12

  284. he gave this

  285. long list

  286. of instructions

  287. about spiritual

  288. gifts

  289. gifts.

  290. And then he

  291. followed it up

  292. in 1 Corinthians

  293. 13 by talking

  294. about what love

  295. is.

  296. Here in Romans

  297. 12 we have

  298. a condensed

  299. version,

  300. verses 3-8

  301. of him talking

  302. about spiritual

  303. gifts

  304. and now in

  305. verses 9-13

  306. a condensed

  307. version of what

  308. he says in 1

  309. Corinthians 13

  310. about love.

  311. Let's look at it.

  312. If we're serious

  313. about pleasing

  314. God by living

  315. like a Christian

  316. then we've got

  317. to love each

  318. other genuinely.

  319. Look at verse 9,

  320. that's the statement.

  321. Let love be

  322. genuine.

  323. The word

  324. genuine here

  325. means without

  326. hypocrisy.

  327. The word was

  328. often used

  329. in that day

  330. to describe

  331. an actor

  332. on a stage,

  333. somebody who

  334. was playing

  335. a role,

  336. somebody who

  337. would hide

  338. behind a mask

  339. that they held

  340. up.

  341. Well Christian

  342. love is the

  343. opposite of that.

  344. Christian love

  345. is supposed

  346. to be sincere.

  347. It's supposed

  348. to be real.

  349. It's not supposed

  350. to be phony.

  351. How much

  352. of our lives

  353. are truly

  354. real?

  355. Think about it.

  356. We are good

  357. at playing a part

  358. when it comes

  359. to projecting

  360. the image

  361. we want people

  362. to see

  363. in us.

  364. You think

  365. about it.

  366. There's people

  367. in this room,

  368. you play

  369. one part

  370. at work.

  371. You play

  372. another part

  373. that's different

  374. at home.

  375. And you may

  376. even play

  377. a third part

  378. here at church.

  379. Or

  380. if you're

  381. younger,

  382. you may do

  383. it that way

  384. at school

  385. at home

  386. at church.

  387. church.

  388. Most of us

  389. in this room

  390. we're southerners.

  391. Most of us

  392. in this room

  393. we are southern

  394. born and southern

  395. bred.

  396. When we die

  397. we'll be southern

  398. dead.

  399. We know that.

  400. That's just

  401. who we are.

  402. Now everybody

  403. here didn't

  404. have the

  405. advantage of

  406. being born

  407. in the south.

  408. But I'm

  409. going to guess

  410. you got here

  411. as quick as

  412. you could.

  413. So you're

  414. here now.

  415. You know

  416. some of the

  417. things I'm

  418. about to

  419. say.

  420. We who

  421. are southerners

  422. we know

  423. how.

  424. We know

  425. how to

  426. fake things.

  427. You know

  428. as southerners

  429. we pride

  430. ourselves on

  431. a lot of

  432. things.

  433. We think

  434. at least

  435. about all

  436. the many

  437. positive

  438. qualities

  439. that we

  440. have.

  441. But being

  442. genuine

  443. is not

  444. really a

  445. strong

  446. suit.

  447. We've

  448. learned how

  449. to be

  450. nice

  451. from an

  452. early age.

  453. How many

  454. of you

  455. have ever

  456. said this

  457. or done

  458. this or

  459. had it

  460. said to

  461. you?

  462. You talk

  463. to someone

  464. on the

  465. telephone

  466. or you

  467. talk to

  468. them in

  469. person

  470. and as

  471. you get

  472. ready to

  473. end the

  474. conversation

  475. before you

  476. say goodbye

  477. before they

  478. say goodbye

  479. one of the

  480. last things

  481. they'll say

  482. is come

  483. to see us.

  484. How many

  485. of you have

  486. heard that

  487. all your

  488. life?

  489. Come to

  490. see us.

  491. They don't

  492. really mean

  493. that.

  494. No.

  495. If I have

  496. a conversation

  497. with,

  498. I'm not

  499. going to

  500. pick on

  501. my,

  502. if I have

  503. a conversation

  504. with,

  505. who could I

  506. pick on

  507. in here this

  508. morning?

  509. I'm not

  510. going to

  511. pick on

  512. Rick this

  513. morning.

  514. Go ahead,

  515. I'll

  516. Rick,

  517. okay?

  518. If I have

  519. a conversation

  520. with Rick

  521. and we get

  522. ready to

  523. wind it down,

  524. he says,

  525. come to see

  526. us,

  527. hang up.

  528. Well,

  529. just out

  530. of the

  531. blue,

  532. out of

  533. the blue,

  534. I show

  535. up ready

  536. just to

  537. come in

  538. and sit

  539. down and

  540. visit for

  541. a while.

  542. He's

  543. going to

  544. be mad.

  545. He's not

  546. going to

  547. appreciate

  548. that.

  549. In this

  550. day and

  551. time,

  552. everybody's

  553. busy.

  554. Everybody

  555. has something

  556. to do.

  557. Nobody's

  558. sitting at

  559. home waiting

  560. for somebody

  561. to come

  562. by just

  563. out of the

  564. blue,

  565. knock on

  566. the door

  567. and say,

  568. I want

  569. to come

  570. in and

  571. visit with

  572. you a little

  573. while.

  574. that's

  575. just not

  576. how life

  577. is today.

  578. But we

  579. say things

  580. trying to

  581. be nice

  582. that we

  583. don't really

  584. mean.

  585. You know,

  586. one of the

  587. worst things

  588. that we do

  589. as Southerners,

  590. one of our

  591. worst sayings,

  592. what is it?

  593. Bless your

  594. heart.

  595. That's

  596. Southern

  597. license to

  598. gossip and

  599. slander,

  600. just say

  601. anything you

  602. want about

  603. someone.

  604. I'll bet

  605. we've got

  606. teachers in

  607. this room

  608. that you

  609. have said

  610. this,

  611. bless his

  612. little heart.

  613. He's the

  614. dumbest child

  615. I've ever

  616. had in my

  617. classes.

  618. Some of

  619. you may

  620. have said,

  621. or some

  622. of you may

  623. have had

  624. one friend

  625. say to

  626. another

  627. friend,

  628. she's got

  629. the ugliest

  630. baby I have

  631. ever seen.

  632. Bless her

  633. heart.

  634. We do

  635. that now.

  636. You know,

  637. I'm going

  638. over the top

  639. with this.

  640. But we

  641. have a

  642. way,

  643. most of

  644. us,

  645. we have a

  646. way of

  647. projecting an

  648. image that

  649. is not

  650. real.

  651. We have a

  652. way of

  653. saying things

  654. that we

  655. really and

  656. truly do

  657. not mean,

  658. and we

  659. have a way

  660. of saying

  661. things that

  662. we do

  663. mean,

  664. that is

  665. mean,

  666. literally.

  667. We try to

  668. camouflage it

  669. in some

  670. way.

  671. Most of

  672. us have

  673. had a

  674. lot of

  675. practice

  676. play

  677. acting

  678. about a

  679. lot of

  680. things,

  681. including

  682. expressing

  683. love.

  684. What Paul

  685. is saying

  686. here is,

  687. be real,

  688. be genuine

  689. in your

  690. love for

  691. the people

  692. around about

  693. you that you

  694. should be the

  695. closest to.

  696. be sincere.

  697. And as I

  698. said earlier,

  699. because the

  700. Spirit of God

  701. lives within

  702. us, we

  703. can.

  704. We can be

  705. real people

  706. and what we

  707. say is what

  708. we mean.

  709. We need to

  710. learn to do

  711. that.

  712. It's something

  713. that we're

  714. commanded to

  715. do.

  716. Let love

  717. be genuine.

  718. But what

  719. will that

  720. look like?

  721. Let's look

  722. now.

  723. Let's look

  724. at what the

  725. rest of these

  726. verses describe.

  727. We must

  728. demonstrate

  729. genuine love

  730. verses 9b

  731. through 13.

  732. First of all,

  733. sincere love

  734. is discerning.

  735. He says,

  736. abhor what is

  737. evil, hold

  738. fast to what

  739. is good, or

  740. hate what is

  741. evil, cling

  742. to what's

  743. good.

  744. Christian love

  745. is not a

  746. sentimental

  747. love.

  748. Christian

  749. love, it's

  750. not the warm

  751. fuzzies.

  752. It requires,

  753. in this case,

  754. looking at what

  755. he's saying

  756. here, it

  757. requires a

  758. violent

  759. hatred of

  760. evil,

  761. and a

  762. strong

  763. attachment

  764. to what's

  765. good.

  766. Some

  767. Christians

  768. think that

  769. love means

  770. you're just

  771. always nice.

  772. Everything's

  773. always okay.

  774. You never

  775. respond negatively

  776. to any

  777. behavior.

  778. Some people

  779. have the

  780. idea, if

  781. you're a

  782. Christian and

  783. you love

  784. people, hate

  785. won't even be

  786. a part of

  787. your vocabulary.

  788. Well, that's

  789. not true.

  790. We're supposed

  791. to hate

  792. evil and

  793. cling fast

  794. to, hold

  795. strongly to

  796. that which

  797. is good.

  798. Our problem

  799. is, a lot

  800. of people,

  801. including

  802. Christians,

  803. define right

  804. and wrong

  805. by their

  806. own standard

  807. of what's

  808. right and

  809. wrong, or

  810. by their

  811. own standard

  812. of what's

  813. loving.

  814. Think of

  815. it this way.

  816. A lot of

  817. people think

  818. sex outside

  819. of marriage

  820. cannot possibly

  821. be wrong.

  822. We

  823. rationalize.

  824. if it

  825. takes place

  826. in the

  827. context of

  828. a loving

  829. relationship.

  830. That's how

  831. many people

  832. justify

  833. premarital

  834. sex.

  835. We love

  836. one another,

  837. or even

  838. adultery,

  839. or

  840. homosexuality.

  841. It just

  842. seems like,

  843. and it is in

  844. today's world,

  845. today's culture,

  846. the idea is

  847. you do what

  848. feels good

  849. to you.

  850. You define

  851. all your

  852. terms.

  853. You define

  854. truth,

  855. you define

  856. love,

  857. and you do

  858. what you

  859. think is the

  860. loving thing

  861. to do.

  862. Here's the

  863. problems.

  864. Christians

  865. don't get to

  866. do that.

  867. God does

  868. that for us,

  869. and He's

  870. done that in

  871. His Word.

  872. God defines

  873. for us what

  874. is right and

  875. wrong, what

  876. is evil and

  877. what is good.

  878. He defines

  879. for us what

  880. love is as

  881. we're reading

  882. here and also

  883. in 1 Corinthians

  884. 13.

  885. That's just a

  886. more lengthy

  887. example.

  888. God has

  889. established real

  890. standards,

  891. objective

  892. standards of

  893. what evil and

  894. good behavior

  895. is in His

  896. Word.

  897. So whatever

  898. God calls

  899. evil, whatever

  900. God calls

  901. sin, it is

  902. evil.

  903. It is sin.

  904. And we

  905. should hate

  906. it.

  907. we should

  908. hate strongly

  909. that which

  910. is truly

  911. evil.

  912. Do you?

  913. But whatever

  914. God says is

  915. right, whatever

  916. God says is

  917. good, that

  918. is what's

  919. right and

  920. good.

  921. And that's

  922. what we should

  923. cling to, hold

  924. close fast to.

  925. Do you?

  926. Let me make a

  927. clarification here.

  928. This is not

  929. teaching that we

  930. are to hate

  931. evil people.

  932. We'll see later

  933. on in our

  934. studies on down

  935. past verse 14,

  936. we're called to

  937. love our enemies.

  938. But we're to

  939. hate evil.

  940. As the old saying

  941. goes, we love

  942. the sinner but

  943. hate the sin.

  944. Sincere love

  945. is discerning.

  946. Sincere love

  947. is also devoted

  948. to others.

  949. Look at verse

  950. 10.

  951. Love one

  952. another with

  953. brotherly affection.

  954. Outdo one

  955. another in

  956. showing honor.

  957. The first

  958. command in

  959. this verse

  960. 10 is love

  961. one another with

  962. brotherly love.

  963. our relationships

  964. with other

  965. Christians is

  966. supposed to be

  967. as close as

  968. relationships with

  969. our biological

  970. brothers and

  971. sisters on our

  972. good days.

  973. You know,

  974. brothers and

  975. sisters are known

  976. to fight like

  977. cats and dogs.

  978. Brothers and

  979. sisters are known

  980. to hurt one

  981. another.

  982. But on their

  983. best days,

  984. brothers and

  985. sisters will

  986. defend one

  987. another and

  988. hurt the person

  989. that tries to

  990. hurt their

  991. brother and

  992. sister.

  993. Paul is saying

  994. that as

  995. Christians,

  996. we're a part

  997. of God's

  998. family.

  999. There is a

  1000. spiritual family

  1001. that we're a

  1002. part of that

  1003. should be as

  1004. close as

  1005. brothers and

  1006. sisters under

  1007. the ideal

  1008. brother-sister

  1009. relationship.

  1010. The second

  1011. command here is

  1012. that we should

  1013. outdo one

  1014. another in

  1015. showing honor.

  1016. The idea is

  1017. that you respect

  1018. others first.

  1019. You're not

  1020. going to do

  1021. this if you

  1022. don't respect

  1023. them and put

  1024. them first.

  1025. The idea is

  1026. sincere love

  1027. seeks the best

  1028. for the one

  1029. you love,

  1030. not yourself.

  1031. The best

  1032. example I've

  1033. ever heard in

  1034. just people

  1035. living and

  1036. doing came

  1037. from children.

  1038. Lisa teaches

  1039. music at an

  1040. elementary school.

  1041. One year,

  1042. several years

  1043. ago now,

  1044. a brother and

  1045. sister both

  1046. tried out for

  1047. honors choir.

  1048. The sister

  1049. made it.

  1050. The brother

  1051. did not.

  1052. When Lisa

  1053. explained to

  1054. the brother,

  1055. your sister

  1056. made honors

  1057. choir and

  1058. you didn't,

  1059. you know

  1060. what he said?

  1061. He said,

  1062. well, if only

  1063. one of us

  1064. could make it,

  1065. I'm glad it

  1066. was my sister.

  1067. And he

  1068. meant it.

  1069. He loved his

  1070. sister.

  1071. And he

  1072. was happy

  1073. for her

  1074. to get

  1075. that honor

  1076. above

  1077. himself.

  1078. And he

  1079. was genuine.

  1080. It was the

  1081. real deal.

  1082. Sincere love

  1083. is devoted

  1084. to others.

  1085. Sincere love

  1086. provides us

  1087. with positive

  1088. energy.

  1089. In verses

  1090. 11 and 12,

  1091. look at it.

  1092. Do not be

  1093. slothful in

  1094. zeal,

  1095. but fervent in

  1096. spirit.

  1097. Serve the Lord,

  1098. rejoice in

  1099. hope,

  1100. be patient in

  1101. tribulation,

  1102. be constant in

  1103. prayer.

  1104. Let's look at

  1105. this quickly

  1106. here.

  1107. Love is

  1108. enthusiastic.

  1109. Another way

  1110. that can be

  1111. translated is

  1112. love is not

  1113. lazy or

  1114. indifferent when

  1115. it comes to

  1116. service.

  1117. Serving God

  1118. and serving

  1119. other people

  1120. is what it's

  1121. talking about

  1122. here.

  1123. Sincere love

  1124. will cause us

  1125. to want to

  1126. do our best

  1127. in fulfilling

  1128. our responsibilities

  1129. to other

  1130. people.

  1131. We won't be

  1132. lazy or half-hearted

  1133. about it.

  1134. And you know

  1135. what I'm

  1136. talking about.

  1137. There are

  1138. things that you

  1139. do in life

  1140. that you

  1141. love,

  1142. you thoroughly

  1143. enjoy,

  1144. but it's

  1145. hard.

  1146. It's a labor

  1147. of love.

  1148. It may be

  1149. your job,

  1150. it may be

  1151. a hobby,

  1152. it may be

  1153. something fun

  1154. you just do

  1155. with your

  1156. friends or

  1157. your children

  1158. or someone.

  1159. You work

  1160. at it,

  1161. you sweat

  1162. at it,

  1163. you get

  1164. worn out,

  1165. but you

  1166. love it.

  1167. It's a labor

  1168. of love,

  1169. you're not

  1170. lazy in it.

  1171. And what

  1172. Paul is saying

  1173. here is we

  1174. have the right

  1175. kind of love

  1176. for one another

  1177. when we've

  1178. got to get

  1179. in there

  1180. and roll

  1181. up our

  1182. sleeves

  1183. and do

  1184. some things

  1185. to meet

  1186. one another's

  1187. needs,

  1188. we'll do

  1189. it enthusiastically.

  1190. We won't

  1191. do it

  1192. begrudgingly,

  1193. that's not

  1194. love.

  1195. We won't

  1196. be lazy

  1197. in doing

  1198. it.

  1199. Love is

  1200. patient.

  1201. It enables

  1202. us to

  1203. persevere

  1204. and not

  1205. give up

  1206. in hard

  1207. times.

  1208. Everybody

  1209. has hard

  1210. times.

  1211. Life is

  1212. not simple

  1213. for anyone.

  1214. Most people

  1215. thankfully,

  1216. it sort

  1217. of comes

  1218. and goes.

  1219. There's

  1220. people in

  1221. this room

  1222. right now,

  1223. right now

  1224. life is

  1225. great for

  1226. you.

  1227. You

  1228. couldn't

  1229. ask for

  1230. things to

  1231. be better.

  1232. There's

  1233. people in

  1234. this room

  1235. that life

  1236. is very

  1237. hard right

  1238. now.

  1239. It's the

  1240. hardest you've

  1241. ever gone

  1242. through.

  1243. Love is

  1244. patient in

  1245. that it

  1246. will help

  1247. us sometimes

  1248. just to

  1249. take one

  1250. more step.

  1251. It'll

  1252. help us

  1253. to continue

  1254. on.

  1255. And let's

  1256. think especially

  1257. in difficulties

  1258. with certain

  1259. people.

  1260. Love will

  1261. help us to

  1262. be patient,

  1263. to work

  1264. with them,

  1265. to build

  1266. bridges,

  1267. not to

  1268. burn them.

  1269. Love motivates

  1270. us to pray.

  1271. If we truly

  1272. believe that God

  1273. answers prayer

  1274. and we love

  1275. people,

  1276. doesn't it make

  1277. sense that we

  1278. ought to want

  1279. to pray for

  1280. them?

  1281. Let's just

  1282. be real

  1283. honest.

  1284. There's

  1285. people in

  1286. your life,

  1287. you just

  1288. love to tell

  1289. them what

  1290. you really

  1291. think.

  1292. There's

  1293. people in

  1294. your life

  1295. that you

  1296. don't like,

  1297. you don't

  1298. like what

  1299. they're doing,

  1300. they irritate

  1301. you, and

  1302. if you could

  1303. just get by

  1304. with it, if

  1305. it could be

  1306. Groundhog Day,

  1307. remember the

  1308. movie?

  1309. You could just

  1310. do whatever

  1311. you wanted to

  1312. do, say

  1313. whatever you

  1314. wanted to

  1315. say, and

  1316. tomorrow they

  1317. wouldn't

  1318. remember.

  1319. You just

  1320. love to

  1321. explode on

  1322. them, just

  1323. tell them what

  1324. you think.

  1325. We can't

  1326. do that.

  1327. Groundhog Day

  1328. in the movie

  1329. was fiction.

  1330. We have to

  1331. love some

  1332. people that

  1333. God has in

  1334. our life

  1335. that's hard

  1336. to love, and

  1337. everybody has

  1338. them.

  1339. You know, as

  1340. the saying goes,

  1341. if you don't

  1342. know who they

  1343. are, you're

  1344. probably it in

  1345. your family or

  1346. your circle.

  1347. And so what

  1348. we've got to

  1349. learn to do

  1350. is love these

  1351. people, and

  1352. one of the

  1353. best ways to

  1354. learn to do

  1355. that is to

  1356. pray for

  1357. them.

  1358. Pray for

  1359. yourself.

  1360. God, help

  1361. me to be

  1362. patient.

  1363. Help me to

  1364. actually meet

  1365. this person's

  1366. need in a

  1367. genuine,

  1368. sincere, kind

  1369. way.

  1370. And then pray

  1371. for that

  1372. person.

  1373. Pray that God

  1374. would work in

  1375. the situation to

  1376. meet the need,

  1377. even to use

  1378. you.

  1379. That goes on

  1380. to verse 13.

  1381. Sincere love

  1382. meets people's

  1383. needs.

  1384. He says,

  1385. contribute to

  1386. the needs of

  1387. the saints,

  1388. and show

  1389. hospitality.

  1390. We're supposed

  1391. to share with

  1392. people as they

  1393. have need.

  1394. What do we

  1395. share?

  1396. Whatever it is

  1397. that they need

  1398. that you can

  1399. meet the need

  1400. with.

  1401. I want you to

  1402. look at a

  1403. passage of

  1404. scripture quickly

  1405. from 1 John

  1406. 3.

  1407. It's on the

  1408. screen.

  1409. This is written

  1410. to Christians.

  1411. This applies to

  1412. all of us.

  1413. If anyone has

  1414. material possessions

  1415. and sees his

  1416. brother in need,

  1417. but has no

  1418. pity on him,

  1419. how can the

  1420. love of God

  1421. be in him?

  1422. Dear children,

  1423. let us love

  1424. not with words

  1425. or tongue,

  1426. but with actions

  1427. and in truth.

  1428. Sometimes love

  1429. is going to

  1430. compel us to

  1431. take out our

  1432. billfold,

  1433. checkbook,

  1434. debit card,

  1435. and meet a

  1436. person's need.

  1437. Sometimes love

  1438. is going to

  1439. compel us to

  1440. be inconvenienced

  1441. to even sacrifice

  1442. to meet a

  1443. brother or

  1444. sister in

  1445. Christ.

  1446. Not just a

  1447. physical brother

  1448. or sister,

  1449. but a brother

  1450. or sister in

  1451. Christ's need.

  1452. Showing

  1453. hospitalities.

  1454. The next one,

  1455. that was of

  1456. great importance

  1457. in the early

  1458. church.

  1459. It was not

  1460. always possible

  1461. that there was a

  1462. place like a

  1463. hotel.

  1464. There weren't

  1465. that many

  1466. inns.

  1467. And a lot of

  1468. times if there

  1469. were, there

  1470. were shady,

  1471. sleazy places

  1472. that you wouldn't

  1473. want someone

  1474. coming in.

  1475. And so, in

  1476. the early

  1477. church, Christians

  1478. who travel like,

  1479. for example,

  1480. the Apostle

  1481. Paul, if he

  1482. came to the

  1483. church at Rome,

  1484. if he came to

  1485. Pickens, he

  1486. would expect for

  1487. a Christian

  1488. family to open

  1489. their home to

  1490. him.

  1491. Him being a

  1492. stranger to them

  1493. on one hand,

  1494. but he, they

  1495. would have heard

  1496. about him.

  1497. It wasn't just a

  1498. total stranger,

  1499. they would have

  1500. heard about him.

  1501. They, he may

  1502. even have some

  1503. letters of

  1504. recommendation from

  1505. another church

  1506. or some other

  1507. Christians that

  1508. they knew of.

  1509. And so they

  1510. would take him

  1511. in.

  1512. How that might

  1513. apply today is

  1514. sometimes we have

  1515. had some youth

  1516. conferences here.

  1517. And we've brought

  1518. in some, maybe

  1519. college students

  1520. from North

  1521. Greenville or

  1522. Liberty University

  1523. or somewhere like

  1524. that.

  1525. And they're coming

  1526. in for a weekend

  1527. and we need

  1528. families in our

  1529. church to house

  1530. these people.

  1531. That is the kind

  1532. of Christian

  1533. hospitality we're

  1534. talking about.

  1535. You don't know

  1536. them, but you do

  1537. know of them.

  1538. We're not talking

  1539. about total stranger.

  1540. They're Christians.

  1541. And so you open

  1542. your home to

  1543. these kinds of

  1544. strangers.

  1545. We talked about

  1546. several years ago

  1547. as a church

  1548. family, partnering

  1549. with a church

  1550. that on the coast

  1551. of South Carolina,

  1552. that if they had

  1553. a hurricane and

  1554. they had to

  1555. evacuate, we

  1556. talked about

  1557. enlisting church

  1558. members to open

  1559. our homes to a

  1560. couple or a

  1561. family from a

  1562. church, say in the

  1563. Charleston area, that

  1564. had to leave because

  1565. of the hurricane.

  1566. That would be

  1567. Christian hospitality

  1568. as an example.

  1569. Paul makes it

  1570. clear, sincere

  1571. love is a whole

  1572. lot more than a

  1573. feeling.

  1574. It's an attitude

  1575. that we display in

  1576. our actions.

1577. So I just want to

1578. ask you, in light of

  1579. what we've seen

  1580. here, are you

  1581. demonstrating sincere

  1582. love to your

  1583. brothers and sisters

  1584. in Christ in

  1585. particular?

  1586. The next question

  1587. is, do you want

  1588. to?

  1589. Is there

  1590. something within

  1591. you, the Spirit

  1592. of God, that

  1593. causes you to see

  1594. this is what's

  1595. right and this is

1596. what I want to do?

  1597. Some of you may

  1598. say, certainly I

  1599. don't do it

  1600. perfectly, but this

  1601. is my goal.

  1602. So you might need

  1603. to ask God this

  1604. morning to help

  1605. you to continue

  1606. on to grow in

  1607. some of these

  1608. areas.

  1609. Whatever it is

  1610. that God's shown

  1611. you, your

  1612. response, what it

  1613. needs to be, ask

  1614. God to help you

  1615. right now to

  1616. desire and

  1617. demonstrate this

  1618. kind of sincere

  1619. love every day

  1620. in all these

  1621. relationships we're

  1622. talking about,

  1623. even the hard

  1624. ones.

  1625. And ask God to

  1626. help you right

  1627. now to do

  1628. whatever it is to

  1629. make the commitment

  1630. to start now.

  1631. Let's pray.

  1632. Dear God, help

  1633. us to see that

  1634. love is not an

  1635. option if we are

  1636. your children.

  1637. And help us to

  1638. see, dear God, that

  1639. we cannot be

  1640. selective about how

  1641. we love and who

  1642. we love.

  1643. So show us right

  1644. now, dear God,

  1645. what we need to

  1646. do about maybe a

  1647. changed attitude,

  1648. changed priorities,

  1649. what we need to

  1650. do about confession

  1651. of sin, that

  1652. would enable us to

  1653. leave here ready

  1654. to start demonstrating

  1655. sincere love.

  1656. Father, if there's

  1657. anyone in this room

  1658. who is not your

  1659. child, help them

  1660. to understand this

  1661. morning how much

  1662. you love them.

  1663. You love them so

  1664. much you sent your

  1665. son into this world,

  1666. the Lord Jesus,

1667. to die and pay the

  1668. penalty for their

  1669. sins.

  1670. Help them, dear God,

  1671. right now to see

  1672. their need, give them

  1673. the desire to turn

1674. from their sin and to

  1675. trust in Jesus and

1676. call upon Him to save

  1677. them right now.

1678. You just listen to the

  1679. Lord with the heads

  1680. bowed and eyes closed

  1681. and respond to Him.

1682. If I could help you

  1683. during this time, I'll

1684. be here in front to

  1685. pray with you.

  1686. also

  1687. a

  1688. you

  1689. B

  1690. .

  1691. .
