  1. What would you think of a tall, athletic member of a basketball team who never wanted to play in the game?

  2. Or what about a talented trumpet player who's in the band but never wants to play in a concert?

  3. Neither would make sense, would they?

  4. Well, what do you think about a gifted Christian who joins a church but never uses their gift in any of the ministries of the church?

  5. That really doesn't make sense either, does it?

  6. But most of us, we're sensible people.

  7. We are.

  8. So there must be a reason why every church member is not involved in the ministry of their church.

  9. It may be that they don't understand.

  10. It may be that some church members just don't understand that when God saved them, He gifted them.

  11. Or maybe just chose to use the natural talent that they were born with and developed.

  12. But God has gifted them in some way to serve Him and other people in and through their church families' ministries.

  13. Well, what we're going to do this morning is educate those church members that do not know that.

  14. The only other thing could be a church member just doesn't care.

  15. But I can't imagine a Christian who understands God has gifted them

  16. and that God has actually commanded them to use what He's given them in the life of their church.

  17. I can't imagine them just absolutely not caring and saying,

  18. God, I'm not going to do it.

  19. So I want to give everybody the benefit of the doubt this morning

  20. that there's just some things you're unclear of if you're not involved in service.

  21. And our prayer this morning is that God will open your eyes,

  22. clear up the uncertainty as we go through Romans chapter 12, verses 6 through 8.

    Romans 12:6–8

  23. We began looking at this two weeks ago under the heading,

  24. Living Like a Christian by Thinking Rightly About Ourselves and Our Church.

  25. But we didn't finish it last week.

  26. I wanted to wait until this week when we're doing the graduate recognition.

  27. And at one point later on in this message,

  28. I want to really focus on some things that I hope you'll think about

  29. as you think about what you're going to do next in your life.

  30. Not just in church, but everywhere.

  31. Let's look.

  32. Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  33. Let's do a quick review of what we saw two weeks ago in verses 3 through 5.

  34. First thing we saw was we need to think objectively about ourselves.

  35. Think objectively about yourself.

  36. He's talking about in verse 3.

  37. First, he says, don't think too highly of yourself.

  38. Look at what he says.

  39. I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think.

  40. Don't be prideful.

  41. Don't be arrogant.

  42. Don't think more highly of yourself than you should.

  43. But look what else he says.

  44. Instead, think realistically.

  45. Think with sober judgment is the actual phrase.

  46. Some people would have the idea,

  47. if when Paul writes, he says, don't think too highly of yourself,

  48. then he's talking about what we should do then is think just very low of ourselves.

  49. Well, no, that's not the case.

  50. Don't be arrogant, but don't think, I don't have anything to offer.

  51. I don't have any gifts or talents or abilities.

  52. No.

  53. He just says think with sober judgment.

  54. New Testament scholar Leon Morris tells us what he's talking about there.

  55. Look at what he says.

  56. Being sober minded means recognizing what God has given us

  57. and being zealous in its use as well as humble.

  58. Thinking objectively about ourselves will cause us to realize

  59. I'm not the most gifted and talented person in the church or wherever,

  60. but I am talented, I am gifted.

  61. God has given me something that I need to humbly accept,

  62. take ownership of,

  63. and use in a way that will honor Him and help other people.

  64. We also learned two weeks ago to think biblically about your place in the body of Christ.

  65. That's in verses 4 and 5.

  66. Paul explains that the church is the body of Christ.

  67. You may be more familiar with the idea that the church is the family of God,

  68. but either way, the church is not a building.

  69. One of the great mistakes people today think of is

  70. when you ride down East Main Street and you look over here,

  71. this is not Dickens First Baptist Church.

  72. This is our church.

  73. We are the body of Christ together.

  74. We are the family of God.

  75. The church is a group of individuals,

  76. like different parts of the human body.

  77. We come together and function like one body.

  78. Look at what Paul says in verse 4.

  79. For as in one body we have many members or many body parts.

  80. Verse 5.

  81. So we, though many body parts,

  82. are one body in Christ.

  83. On one hand,

  84. we're the church.

  85. We're the family of God.

  86. We're the body of Christ.

  87. We're one.

  88. But on the other hand,

  89. each one of us as individuals,

  90. we're a certain body part.

  91. Look at what he says in verse 4.

  92. The members do not all have the same function.

  93. Verse 6.

  94. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us,

  95. let us use them.

  96. Every member of our church is important

  97. because every member of our church

  98. has been given gifts, talents, or abilities by God.

  99. And God wants you to use what he's given you

  100. like a part of your body works.

  101. Some people in this room,

  102. from this analogy,

  103. you're like the hands of the church.

  104. Some are like the feet.

  105. Some are like the eyes.

  106. Some are parts we won't mention this morning.

  107. The key to us being a healthy and effective church

  108. is for each of us

  109. to recognize what part we are

  110. and function accordingly.

  111. So let me ask you,

  112. which part of the body are you?

  113. And I know we have people here today

  114. who are not part of our church family,

  115. but a lot of you are members of another church,

  116. so you apply it to your church.

  117. You're not off the hook this morning.

  118. This applies to you

  119. and how you serve

  120. the ministry you're involved in

  121. or should be involved in

  122. in your church.

  123. That leads us to

  124. what we're going to look at new today,

  125. Romans 12, verses 6 through 8.

    Romans 12:6–8

  126. Let's look at it.

  127. Beginning in verse 6,

  128. having gifts that differ

  129. according to the grace given to us,

  130. let us use them.

  131. If prophecy in proportion to our faith,

  132. if service in our serving,

  133. the one who teaches in his teaching,

  134. the one who exhorts in his exhortation.

  135. Let's talk about giving encouragement

  136. or the word exhortation

  137. really sort of means

  138. firm counsel,

  139. direct instruction.

  140. That can be encouragement

  141. and some translations use the word

  142. encourage here

  143. instead of exhort.

  144. Go back to where we were there,

  145. the one who contributes,

  146. the one who gives in generosity,

  147. the one who leads with zeal,

  148. the one who does acts of mercy

  149. with cheerfulness.

  150. These verses are telling you

  151. to think responsibly

  152. about your spiritual gifts.

  153. Think responsibly.

  154. Paul's telling us,

  155. you've got gifts,

  156. use them,

  157. take responsibility for them.

  158. They're in verse 6.

  159. Now,

  160. what we're talking about

  161. is you're looking at verse 6,

  162. we're talking about gifts

  163. of God's grace,

  164. God's undeserved favor.

  165. God chose to give

  166. each one of his children

  167. certain gifts.

  168. And God just,

  169. within himself,

  170. it's not because

  171. you deserved it,

  172. it's not because

  173. you have done something

  174. to earn it,

  175. no,

  176. God just chose you

  177. to gift you

  178. or give you the talent

  179. that you have

  180. because he wanted you

  181. to have it.

  182. Because his plan

  183. was to use you

  184. and that gift

  185. to serve his purpose

  186. in this church

  187. and really in this world.

  188. Paul provides us

  189. with more details

  190. about these gifts

  191. in 1 Corinthians chapter 12.

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  192. If you ever want to

  193. do a serious study

  194. of spiritual gifts,

  195. things we're talking

  196. about this morning,

  197. look at 1 Corinthians chapter 12.

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  198. There's a lot of things

  199. he tells us

  200. that'll help us

  201. better understand them.

  202. Here's two things.

  203. God assigns us

  204. the gift

  205. he wants us to have,

  206. we don't get to choose it.

  207. Look in 1 Corinthians 12, 11.

  208. He alone

  209. decides which gift

  210. each person should have.

  211. That's from

  212. the New Living Translation.

  213. Then God gives us

  214. the gift that he gives us

  215. for the benefit of the church.

  216. Not to make us a star

  217. if it's something

  218. where we're up

  219. in front of people.

  220. But to benefit the church

  221. in some way,

  222. look in verse 7

  223. of 1 Corinthians 12.

  224. A spiritual gift

  225. is given

  226. to each of us

  227. so that we can

  228. help each other.

  229. Now,

  230. we're talking about

  231. spiritual gifts here.

  232. What is a spiritual gift?

  233. There's a lot of different ways

  234. people define that.

  235. Some of you here

  236. have studied it.

  237. We've done studies

  238. at various times

  239. over the years

  240. Sunday morning,

  241. Sunday night,

  242. and Wednesday night.

  243. Here's my favorite definition.

  244. It's from Wayne Grudem,

  245. the theologian.

  246. He defines these gifts

  247. as any talent

  248. or ability

  249. which is empowered

  250. by the Holy Spirit

  251. and able to be used

  252. in the ministry

  253. of the church.

  254. Your spiritual gift

  255. may be something,

  256. really,

  257. that God gave you

  258. at birth.

  259. A talent

  260. that you have developed.

  261. And when you became

  262. a Christian,

  263. God has channeled

  264. that talent

  265. or moved you

  266. to serve Him

  267. in that way.

  268. Let's take for example,

  269. some people are just

  270. natural born singers.

  271. Now,

  272. they may develop

  273. that gift,

  274. but you may be

  275. when you were little.

  276. Some of you,

  277. y'all have grown up

  278. in children's choir.

  279. Grew up singing.

  280. Some of you

  281. playing instruments.

  282. Some of you still do it

  283. every Sunday.

  284. Well,

  285. some of you had this talent,

  286. this musical ability.

  287. And as time has gone on,

  288. God's just used it

  289. as you have become a Christian

  290. and started being serious

  291. about living after your faith.

  292. God's using you

  293. with a talent

  294. He gave you

  295. many years ago

  296. to serve Him.

  297. Some people,

  298. though,

  299. when God saves them,

  300. He gives them

  301. a new gift,

  302. something that's maybe

  303. totally out of character

  304. from the way

  305. they used to be.

  306. I know a man today,

  307. one of the most kind

  308. and easygoing guys

  309. you'll ever meet.

  310. He has the gift

  311. of service.

  312. He just wants

  313. to serve people,

  314. meet people's needs.

  315. He also has

  316. the gift of mercy.

  317. He has a real heart

  318. for people.

  319. He cares

  320. as well as serving.

  321. That guy told me

  322. when he was younger,

  323. teenager,

  324. growing up

  325. and in the military,

  326. in the Navy.

  327. He said,

  328. back in those days,

  329. I was not what I am today.

  330. God has changed me.

  331. Back in those days,

  332. I was basically mean,

  333. I was selfish

  334. and self-centered

  335. and the way he put it is,

  336. I didn't take anything

  337. off anybody.

  338. But when God saved him,

  339. God changed him

  340. in ways that a lot of people

  341. never change.

  342. Instead of being

  343. that selfish,

  344. self-centered,

  345. I don't take anything

  346. off anyone kind of guy,

  347. he became a more

  348. humble,

  349. focusing on the other person,

  350. recognizes when people

  351. have needs,

  352. they're hurting,

  353. his heart goes out to them,

  354. and he really wants to help.

  355. He really cares.

  356. It's his gift

  357. to serve people.

  358. It doesn't matter

  359. where it comes from.

  360. If you want to call it

  361. a talent,

  362. a gift,

  363. or an ability,

  364. a spiritual gift

  365. can be any talent

  366. or ability

  367. which is empowered

  368. by the Holy Spirit

  369. and able to be used

  370. in the ministry

  371. of the church.

  372. But let's don't forget

  373. something.

  374. Throughout this whole message,

  375. the key statement,

  376. use your gifts.

  377. Verse 6,

  378. having gifts that differ

  379. according to the grace

  380. given to us,

  381. let us use them.

  382. That's what we're talking about.

  383. Using our gifts.

  384. Then Paul gives seven examples

  385. of spiritual gifts

  386. in verses 7 and 8.

  387. He wants to emphasize

  388. whatever your gift is,

  389. just do it.

  390. Use it.

  391. Now,

  392. the fact is,

  393. if you read

  394. these verses,

  395. you see seven gifts.

  396. If you can read

  397. 1 Corinthians 12,

  398. you see a bunch more.

  399. If you read

  400. Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  401. and verse 11,

  402. you see four more

  403. actually gifted people

  404. God gives to the church.

  405. If you put all these

  406. lists together,

  407. there are some duplications

  408. and some people

  409. would even debate

  410. what is duplicated.

  411. But all the gifts

  412. that you read

  413. that Paul writes about,

  414. there's probably 18 or 19

  415. or even more of them.

  416. And the point

  417. I want to make is,

  418. when you read about

  419. the spiritual gifts

  420. in the New Testament,

  421. in Paul's letters,

  422. Peter has something

  423. to say about it too

  424. in his first letter,

  425. chapter 4.

  426. The gifts are always,

  427. there's a different

  428. group of them

  429. every time.

  430. Some of them

  431. are in different groups.

  432. But there's never

  433. just one list

  434. of spiritual gifts.

  435. Some are listed here.

  436. Some are listed here.

  437. Some are listed

  438. in different orders.

  439. What that means is,

  440. when Paul is writing

  441. about spiritual gifts,

  442. he's not trying

  443. to tell us

  444. what they all are.

  445. He's just trying

  446. to say there's

  447. a bunch of them.

  448. And what you need

  449. to do is,

  450. be aware of which one

  451. it is that God

  452. has given you,

  453. or which ones

  454. God has given you.

  455. Now, in this list

  456. we're looking at

  457. in Romans,

  458. verses 7 and 8,

  459. prophecy is the most

  460. difficult one

  461. to understand.

  462. The ESV study Bible

  463. has this comment

  464. explaining what

  465. he's talking about here.

  466. Prophecy here,

  467. speech that reports

  468. something that God

  469. spontaneously brings

  470. to mind or reveals

  471. to the speaker.

  472. But since this is

  473. human speech,

  474. we're not talking

  475. about an infallible

  476. word from God.

  477. Because it is

  478. human speech,

  479. it must be tested

  480. or evaluated

  481. as 1 Corinthians 14,

  482. 29 points out.

  483. Now, there's

  484. differences of opinion

  485. of what the gift

  486. of prophecy is

  487. in today's church.

  488. Some people would say

  489. it's just clearly,

  490. plainly, boldly

  491. preaching

  492. the word of God.

  493. Either way,

  494. Paul's point

  495. is that

  496. this is your gift.

  497. Use it in proportion

  498. to your faith.

  499. Use it to the extent

  500. that you believe

  501. God is leading you.

  502. The other gifts

  503. are basically

  504. self-explanatory.

  505. And if you just read it,

  506. you understand.

  507. Paul is just saying

  508. this is a representative list.

  509. If your gift is this,

  510. just do it.

  511. He's saying to us,

  512. recognize what your

  513. spiritual talent,

  514. gift,

  515. ability is.

  516. Recognize it.

  517. Acknowledge it.

  518. And use it.

  519. If it's to teach,

  520. teach.

  521. If it's a gift

  522. of service,

  523. serve.

  524. Whatever it is,

  525. do it.

  526. Now the question is,

  527. the question we need

  528. to be asking ourselves

  529. right now,

  530. am I?

  531. Am I using

  532. the gifts,

  533. the talents,

  534. the abilities

  535. that God has given me

  536. in the ministry

  537. of this church?

  538. And we have a lot

  539. of people who are.

  540. You've seen some people

  541. this morning already.

  542. They have been

  543. exercising their gifts

  544. in helping us worship.

  545. Some people you've heard

  546. sing,

  547. teach.

  548. Some people you've just

  549. seen what they're doing.

  550. Things with a screen.

  551. Things with a sound.

  552. There are some people

  553. whose spiritual gift

  554. is such,

  555. you see them

  556. or you see what they do

  557. on Sundays.

  558. Some people use their gifts

  559. and you never see them

  560. on Sunday.

  561. They're serving the Lord

  562. during the week

  563. outside of our gatherings.

  564. Some people,

  565. let me rephrase that

  566. for an example.

  567. We've got over 70 people,

  568. 70 members of our church

  569. who have volunteered

  570. to use their talents,

  571. gifts,

  572. and abilities,

  573. and time

  574. in our Truth Journey

  575. sports camp

  576. that's coming up

  577. in just a few weeks

  578. out at J.C. Park.

  579. Over 70 members

  580. of our church

  581. are using the talents,

  582. gifts, and abilities

  583. they have.

  584. They're doing everything

  585. from teach children.

  586. Some of them

  587. are not going to teach.

  588. They're going to try

  589. to herd children.

  590. Some of them

  591. are going to set up games.

  592. Some of them

  593. are going to come up here

  594. and get water

  595. and ice

  596. and bring it out there

  597. for people to have.

  598. Some people are going

  599. to do security.

  600. Some people are going

  601. to run the games,

  602. make sure everything

  603. is in order

  604. what it's supposed to be.

  605. We've got also

  606. over 40 individuals

  607. who have signed up

  608. to use their gifts

  609. and abilities

  610. in a music camp

  611. that'll be a couple

  612. of weeks after

  613. the sports camp.

  614. Now some of those,

  615. some people,

  616. some people are gluttons

  617. for punishment

  618. and they're doing

  619. both weeks.

  620. And we thank you

  621. so much

  622. that you're a glutton

  623. for punishment.

  624. But not all 40

  625. who are doing

  626. the music camp

  627. are doing

  628. the sports camp.

  629. I say all that

  630. to say there's a lot

  631. of people in our church

  632. who are using

  633. their gifts.

  634. They are using

  635. the talents

  636. God's given them.

  637. They are using

  638. what they have learned,

  639. what they have developed,

  640. their abilities.

  641. And in all of this,

  642. I want you to think,

  643. what these people

  644. are doing,

  645. they are choosing

  646. to use their time

  647. to serve God

  648. this way

  649. and serve other people.

  650. sometimes on Sunday,

  651. sometimes during the week,

  652. sometimes both.

  653. Now,

  654. many people in our church

  655. are involved

  656. and that is great.

  657. But are you?

  658. We're not talking now

  659. about many people.

  660. I want you to think,

  661. what are you doing

  662. if you're a Christian

  663. with the gifts,

  664. talents,

  665. and abilities

  666. that God has given you

  667. for the purpose of,

  668. according to His Word,

  669. serving in

  670. or through

  671. the ministry

  672. of this church.

  673. Now,

  674. it may be,

  675. as I said

  676. at the beginning,

  677. you don't really

  678. understand this

  679. or you don't know

  680. how or where

  681. you should be involved.

  682. And I want to try

  683. to help here.

  684. Rick Warren

  685. has put together

  686. what I think

  687. is the best little tool

  688. to help a person

  689. understand

  690. how they're gifted

  691. and where they ought to serve.

  692. And it's a one-word acronym,

  693. SHAPE.

  694. You know,

  695. a lot of us,

  696. we don't want to really

  697. think about how we are

  698. shaped

  699. this morning.

  700. But all of us

  701. can look at

  702. how God

  703. has shaped us

  704. for ministry

  705. and profit from it.

  706. We can be either

  707. affirmed in what we're doing

  708. or we can learn

  709. how God wants

  710. to use us.

  711. So right now,

  712. let's real quickly,

  713. I want you to think

  714. about your shape.

  715. As we go through this,

  716. you graduates,

  717. I hope you'll think

  718. about how God

  719. shaped you to serve

  720. in this church.

  721. But also,

  722. I want you to think

  723. about how God

  724. has shaped you

  725. to work in this world.

  726. What I want to show you

  727. here is very practical.

  728. It can help you

  729. if you don't know

  730. what you need to be doing.

  731. This can help you see

  732. how God's made you

  733. and maybe help you

  734. zero in on

  735. where to go to school,

  736. what to major in,

  737. what kind of profession,

  738. what kind of job

  739. to pursue.

  740. One thing,

  741. it's not going to come out

  742. in this

  743. that I want to say here

  744. so I don't forget it.

  745. Whatever you do,

  746. whatever you think

  747. your shape is

  748. when it comes to

  749. working in this world,

  750. you make sure

  751. you can make a living at it.

  752. God has not shaped you

  753. to go out

  754. and spend four years

  755. and a ton of money

  756. for an example,

  757. majoring in philosophy

  758. just because you want

  759. to be a deep thinker.

  760. There are very few jobs

  761. even for PhDs

  762. in philosophy.

  763. I give that as an extreme example

  764. because I don't think

  765. any of y'all

  766. are going to do that.

  767. But I also want to say

  768. to parents,

  769. you students,

  770. you're making an investment

  771. as you go to college,

  772. you go to tech school,

  773. you go to whatever

  774. you're going to do next.

  775. You parents,

  776. you're making

  777. a big financial investment.

  778. It's none of my business

  779. but I'm going to say it anyway.

  780. I wouldn't invest

  781. my money

  782. in something

  783. that there's absolutely

  784. zero percent chance

  785. of them being able

  786. to make a living at.

  787. That's foolish.

  788. They need to be able

  789. to work in this world

  790. and get off your payroll

  791. and make a living.

  792. But don't just find something

  793. that pays a lot of money.

  794. That is not the way.

  795. But whatever you are

  796. shaped to do,

  797. you've got to be able

  798. to make a living.

  799. You can't live

  800. with your parents forever.

  801. And if they're smart,

  802. then it won't let you

  803. live with them forever.

  804. Now, let's think

  805. about our shape.

  806. Number one,

  807. spiritual gifts.

  808. We've been talking

  809. about that.

  810. Any talent or ability

  811. which is empowered

  812. by the Holy Spirit

  813. and able to be used

  814. in the ministry

  815. of the church.

  816. Listed in the scriptures

  817. as we point out here,

  818. still on the screen.

  819. If you don't know

  820. what your spiritual gift is,

  821. try something.

  822. Experiment.

  823. What gifts do people

  824. affirm you in?

  825. What gifts do you just sense

  826. this is what God

  827. made me to do?

  828. Think about it that way.

  829. Number two, heart.

  830. You're thinking about

  831. your shape.

  832. How has God gifted me

  833. to work in this church?

  834. How has God gifted me

  835. to do whatever I do

  836. with my life?

  837. Think about your heart.

  838. What's your heart's desire?

  839. What's your passion?

  840. What do you enjoy doing?

  841. Now, that doesn't mean

  842. it's easy.

  843. Some of the things

  844. you enjoy doing,

  845. it takes a lot of time.

  846. It takes a lot of sweat.

  847. It takes a lot of mental

  848. toil maybe.

  849. But what are you

  850. passionate about?

  851. What excites you?

  852. You're thinking about

  853. your spiritual gifts

  854. or in the case of your job,

  855. think about your strengths.

  856. Next, think about your heart.

  857. What do you want to do?

  858. What are you passionate about?

  859. Number three,

  860. your abilities,

  861. your natural talents,

  862. your developed abilities.

  863. What can you do?

  864. What are you good at?

  865. What do other people affirm?

  866. I can think in my mind

  867. that God's given me

  868. the gift to sing.

  869. And I can be passionate about it.

  870. I can sing the top of my lungs

  871. in the shower

  872. because it thrills my soul.

  873. But I can't do it.

  874. Last week,

  875. I had the opportunity,

  876. I was asked

  877. to sing with those twins,

  878. Stewart girls.

  879. I only had two words,

  880. one line.

  881. He said,

  882. I said,

  883. no,

  884. I can't do that.

  885. When they sung it

  886. and Brian did that part,

  887. Lisa looked at me

  888. and said,

  889. I'm glad you didn't do that.

  890. So I'm saying,

  891. that's all that to say,

  892. your shape

  893. will include

  894. what you can do.

  895. This is not talking

  896. about some kind of

  897. wishful thinking,

  898. pie in the sky stuff.

  899. If God's given you

  900. a spiritual gift

  901. or a strength,

  902. he's given you

  903. a heart's desire,

  904. you will be able to do it.

  905. You may have to work at it.

  906. You may take some time

  907. to develop it.

  908. But you need to think about

  909. what can I do?

  910. What are my abilities?

  911. Number four,

  912. personality.

  913. Your uniqueness,

  914. your temperament.

  915. Are you an outgoing person?

  916. Are you a people person

  917. who thrives

  918. on interaction with people?

  919. Or are you a more

  920. task-oriented person?

  921. You don't want to be

  922. around a lot of people.

  923. You don't want to,

  924. for certain,

  925. get up in front of people.

  926. But you love to be quiet.

  927. You love to be

  928. behind the scenes.

  929. You love to work

  930. on something,

  931. do stuff.

  932. This doesn't require

  933. a whole lot of people

  934. interaction.

  935. That's how you're made.

  936. There's nothing wrong

  937. with that.

  938. There's people in this world

  939. who are people-oriented

  940. and they do well.

  941. There's people in this world

  942. who are task-oriented

  943. and they do well.

  944. Number five,

  945. experiences.

  946. What have you done?

  947. God sometimes prepares us

  948. for a particular ministry

  949. in the church

  950. or vocation even

  951. by enabling us,

  952. causing us

  953. to have certain

  954. life experiences,

  955. good and bad.

  956. That's why it's important.

  957. This is sort of

  958. on the side here.

  959. All of you,

  960. I don't know what

  961. all of y'all have done,

  962. but I know some of y'all

  963. have done a lot of stuff.

  964. I don't mean the bad stuff now.

  965. I know you've done that too.

  966. We're talking about

  967. good stuff you did.

  968. You know,

  969. you worked different kinds

  970. of jobs,

  971. tried different things.

  972. That's good.

  973. You've learned some things

  974. that you like

  975. and that you don't like.

  976. You've learned some things

  977. that you're good at

  978. and some things

  979. you aren't good at.

  980. That's what every person

  981. ought to learn.

  982. You ought to get your children.

  983. Don't let children

  984. just sit in the house

  985. and watch TV,

  986. play video games.

  987. They need to get out

  988. and learn some things

  989. about life.

  990. Get life experience.

  991. That is vitally important

  992. for all people.

  993. It helps us to understand

  994. who we are,

  995. how we're made,

  996. what God wants us to do

  997. in the church

  998. and in the world.

  999. If we will seek to serve God

  1000. according to our shape,

  1001. our gifts,

  1002. our heart,

  1003. our abilities,

  1004. our personality

  1005. and experiences,

1006. if we'll seek to serve God

  1007. faithfully

  1008. in the church

  1009. and in the world,

1010. we will not only honor God,

  1011. but we'll find joy

  1012. and satisfaction

  1013. in what we do.

  1014. We'll like it.

1015. And we will make a difference

  1016. in some people's lives

  1017. because we're doing

1018. what God called us to do

  1019. and what means something

  1020. to us.

  1021. If you're doing something

  1022. right now in ministry

1023. that you find no joy

  1024. or satisfaction in,

  1025. you just dread coming,

  1026. you hate it,

  1027. you don't see that

  1028. you're doing any good,

1029. you probably are not shaped

  1030. for that ministry.

  1031. So don't do it.

  1032. You shouldn't do things

1033. in the life of the church

  1034. just because somebody else

1035. wants you to do it.

1036. Because your friend does it,

1037. you think you've got to do it

  1038. with your friend.

  1039. Because somebody inflicted guilt

  1040. on you.

1041. Serve God according to the way

  1042. He has shaped you.

1043. And there is a way

  1044. He has shaped you

1045. that you can plug in

1046. to some way of ministry,

  1047. some type of ministry

  1048. in our church

  1049. that'll matter to you

1050. and it'll matter to the people

  1051. who are involved.

  1052. And you'll look forward

  1053. to doing it.

  1054. People will look forward

  1055. to you doing it.

  1056. Serving God according

  1057. to our shape,

  1058. let me reemphasize,

1059. it is not always easy.

1060. It may take a lot of time,

1061. it may be a lot of work,

  1062. but serving God

  1063. according to our shape

  1064. will be worth it.

1065. It might be a labor of love.

1066. Now if you haven't figured out

  1067. what your ministry is,

1068. or you haven't figured out

1069. what your calling in life is,

  1070. take the time

1071. to just talk to God about it

  1072. on a regular basis.

1073. Ask God to help you

  1074. to understand

1075. how He has shaped you.

  1076. Seek His guidance.

  1077. Pray.

  1078. Ask God for wisdom.

1079. He wants to give it to us.

  1080. Evaluate what we're looking

  1081. at this morning.

  1082. Take some time.

  1083. Ask some other people.

  1084. Experiment.

  1085. Ask other people

  1086. who know you well

1087. and will tell you the truth.

  1088. You know,

  1089. a lot of people

  1090. will just tell you

1091. what you want to hear.

  1092. A lot of people

  1093. will tell you things

1094. that make you feel good,

  1095. especially when you're young.

  1096. A lot of times

  1097. people don't,

1098. people are just not willing.

1099. They may love you a lot.

  1100. They're just not willing

  1101. to say,

  1102. you stink at this.

1103. Or you just can't do this.

1104. Or you got a long ways to go.

1105. When I was first called

  1106. to preach

1107. and I used to preach

  1108. and different people

  1109. take the risk

  1110. and let me preach

  1111. when I was 20 years old.

1112. Everybody used to come up

  1113. to you after.

  1114. No matter what.

1115. Oh, you did just a good job.

  1116. Blah, blah, blah.

1117. Just making you feel good

  1118. about yourself.

1119. Well, I went to one church

  1120. one time.

1121. There was this older lady there.

  1122. She knew my family.

  1123. Thought she knew me.

  1124. But I didn't know her.

  1125. Well, I was there

  1126. and people came up

  1127. making you feel good.

1128. She came up to me

1129. and looked me in the eye.

  1130. She said,

1131. don't worry about it, son.

1132. You're going to get better.

1133. And that's the exact word

  1134. she said.

1135. I remember to this day.

1136. Don't worry about it, son.

1137. You're going to get better.

1138. She was telling the truth.

1139. And I needed to hear that.

  1140. Our children,

  1141. people we're trying

  1142. to influence,

1143. they need to hear the truth.

  1144. It's spoken kindly.

1145. She wasn't mean about it.

1146. She was just matter of fact.

  1147. A healthy physical body

1148. requires all the individual body parts

1149. to function properly, doesn't it?

  1150. Well, healthy church body

1151. requires all the individual parts

1152. to function properly as well.

1153. I want to encourage everyone here.

  1154. Use your God-given gifts,

  1155. talents, and abilities

1156. in the life of our church.

1157. Whatever that means for you to do,

  1158. whether it's on a Sunday,

  1159. during the week,

  1160. once a week,

  1161. once a month,

  1162. whatever it is.

1163. And I believe when we all use

  1164. what God's given us

  1165. the right way,

  1166. three things will happen.

1167. Other people will be helped.

  1168. God will use us

1169. to touch other people's lives

  1170. in a meaningful way.

  1171. Number two,

  1172. we will be fulfilled.

  1173. We'll be satisfied.

  1174. We'll be content

  1175. because we're functioning

  1176. as God designed us,

1177. as God shaped us to function.

  1178. Number three,

  1179. and most importantly,

  1180. God will be glorified.

  1181. God is pleased

  1182. when His children

  1183. serve Him

  1184. like He made them

1185. and intended them to serve.

  1186. Question again,

  1187. one more time.

1188. How are you serving God

1189. in the life of this church

  1190. or some other church?

  1191. Let's pray together.

  1192. Dear God,

  1193. we thank You

  1194. that You

  1195. love us

  1196. and have made us

  1197. like we are

  1198. as individual

  1199. parts of this body.

  1200. Help us, dear God,

  1201. to understand

  1202. who we are,

  1203. how You've shaped us,

1204. and help us to serve.

  1205. Lord,

  1206. I pray that You

  1207. will affirm

1208. each person in this room

  1209. who is serving You

  1210. this way,

  1211. and many people are.

  1212. I pray, dear God,

1213. that You'll just give them

1214. a sense of just rightness.

1215. They're seeking to please You

1216. with what You've given them.

  1217. Father,

  1218. if there are people

  1219. in this room

  1220. who are not serving,

  1221. help them to know

1222. that there is no excuse.

  1223. Help them to know

  1224. that for them

  1225. to be a Christian

  1226. and a member of a church

  1227. and not serve

  1228. makes no more sense

  1229. than a person

  1230. who chooses to be

  1231. on a baseball team

  1232. and never wants

1233. to be in the game.

  1234. Convict them, dear God,

  1235. of the need

  1236. to serve You

  1237. in and through

  1238. this church

  1239. or whatever church

  1240. they're a member of.

  1241. Help them, dear God,

  1242. to get serious

  1243. about discovering

  1244. how You've shaped them

  1245. and then get involved

  1246. in some kind

  1247. of ministry.

  1248. Father,

1249. for people in this room

  1250. this morning

  1251. who think to themselves,

  1252. I don't have a clue

1253. as to what's been said.

  1254. I don't understand.

1255. Help them to know, dear God,

  1256. that it's because

  1257. they're not a Christian.

  1258. Your Spirit

1259. does not dwell in them

  1260. and they can't understand

  1261. the things of God,

1262. the things of the Spirit,

  1263. the things of gifts.

1264. But I pray, dear God,

  1265. that You will use

  1266. this message

  1267. to give them

  1268. what they need

  1269. to understand.

  1270. They're separated from You.

  1271. They don't have

  1272. a relationship with You.

  1273. They're doomed

  1274. unless something changes.

  1275. Help them to know

1276. that what needs to change

  1277. is for them

  1278. to admit their situation,

1279. to turn from their sin,

1280. to change their mind about it,

  1281. to grieve over it,

1282. and to put their faith

  1283. and trust in Jesus

1284. that when He died on the cross

  1285. He actually took

  1286. their punishment.

  1287. Help them, dear God,

  1288. right now

  1289. to call upon Jesus

  1290. to save them.

  1291. Help that man

  1292. or woman

  1293. or young person

  1294. to commit their life

  1295. to Jesus

  1296. as their Savior

  1297. and Lord,

  1298. leader of their life.

1299. And just in an attitude

  1300. of prayer,

1301. let's listen to the Lord,

  1302. all of us,

  1303. and respond to Him

  1304. in obedience.

1305. I'll be here at the front

  1306. of the Lord.

1307. I want to pray with you.

1308. Be happy to do that

  1309. if you'll come

  1310. during this time.

  1311. But the main thing

1312. is that we just do

1313. what God tells us to do

1314. and make the kind of commitment

1315. He's made clear to us.

  1316. Amen.
