  1. How do you respond when people mistreat you?

  2. What's your general way of responding?

  3. Well, you know, the answer really depends on how we're mistreated.

  4. As I'm going to point out as we go through this message this morning,

  5. we live or we have been going through over the past several weeks now

  6. Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  7. We've been studying that chapter of Scripture.

  8. We've learned how God wants us to live in a right relationship with Him

  9. and how He wants us to live in relationship with other people.

  10. When we got to Romans chapter 12 verses 14 through 21,

    Romans 12:14–21

  11. we found that we are expected, called by God,

  12. to do everything that we can to live peacefully with people.

  13. Do everything that we can to avoid conflict, if possible.

  14. I want you to note some examples.

  15. We'll look at them quickly.

  16. This is from Romans 12.

  17. Bless those who persecute you.

  18. Bless and do not curse them.

  19. Repay no one evil for evil,

  20. but give thought to do what is honorable or right in the sight of all.

  21. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

  22. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

  23. Where in the world would Paul get something like that?

  24. Well, he learned it from Jesus.

  25. That's what Jesus taught.

  26. As we looked at last week in Matthew chapter 5, verses 38 through 42.

    Matthew 5:38–42

  27. I want us to look at it quickly.

  28. What Jesus said.

  29. You have heard that it was said,

  30. an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

  31. But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil.

  32. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek,

  33. turn to him the other also.

  34. If anyone would sue you and take your tunic, your shirt,

  35. let him have your cloak, your overcoat as well.

  36. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

  37. Give to the one who begs from you,

  38. and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

  39. Next week, we're going to look at Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  40. beginning in verse 43, where Jesus told us to love our enemies.

  41. Now, in light of all this,

  42. in light of what we've just read,

  43. we need to be thinking,

  44. is God telling us we've got to give up

  45. on the idea of justice in this world?

  46. Is Paul and Jesus telling us

  47. that a Christian could not serve in the military,

  48. could not be a law enforcement officer,

  49. are these verses,

  50. are they actually saying

  51. that we could never defend our families or ourself?

  52. Well, the answer to all three questions is no.

  53. That's not what's being said.

  54. Christians may and we should seek justice.

  55. We can and should defend our families

  56. and even our own lives

  57. when they're threatened under certain circumstances.

  58. Christians may certainly serve in the military

  59. or be law enforcement officers.

  60. God not only allows,

  61. but He expects us,

  62. as we live in this world,

  63. as Christians,

  64. as faithful Christians,

  65. He expects us to seek justice,

  66. to protect our families,

  67. even our own lives,

  68. just make sure we do it in appropriate ways.

  69. That's what we're going to be looking at

  70. as we go through this message.

  71. But first,

  72. I want to do a little quick reminder from last week.

  73. First of all,

  74. God prohibits us from seeking revenge

  75. or retaliating against our enemies.

  76. If you weren't here last week,

  77. I'd encourage you to go online

  78. and listen to that message.

  79. God prohibits us from seeking revenge

  80. or retaliating against our enemies.

  81. God expects us to treat people better

  82. than they treat us.

  83. And what He wants us to do

  84. is learn to exercise restraint.

  85. Don't just have a mindset,

  86. whatever somebody does to me,

  87. I'm going to do it back.

  88. I'm going to do it worse.

  89. I'm not going to get mad.

  90. I'm going to get even,

  91. as I said last week.

  92. That's not how we are called to live as Christians

  93. in our relationships with other people,

  94. even our enemies.

  95. That doesn't mean we've got to let the bad guys win.

  96. That doesn't mean they're going to win

  97. because they won't.

  98. Paul stressed

  99. that God will make sure

  100. that the bad guys don't win.

  101. That justice will prevail.

  102. But what we've got to do

  103. is learn to trust Him.

  104. We've got to learn to trust

  105. that God's going to make things right.

  106. That's what Paul talks about

  107. in Romans 12, verse 19.

    Romans 12:19

  108. He says,

  109. Beloved, never avenge yourselves,

  110. but leave it to the wrath of God.

  111. For it is written,

  112. Vengeance is mine,

  113. I will repay,

  114. says the Lord.

  115. Here's what we need to understand.

  116. There's a lot of bad in this world.

  117. There's a lot of evil people in this world.

  118. There's a lot of people who will hurt you,

  119. who will hurt your family,

  120. who will hurt this country,

  121. who will hurt people.

  122. And the idea is not

  123. God's telling His people,

  124. well, you don't worry about it.

  125. Just let it go.

  126. It'll be all right.

  127. No.

  128. Scripture's telling us,

  129. among other things,

  130. we need to learn to trust God

  131. that He will make things right.

  132. He will avenge His people.

  133. We can trust Him.

  134. And Paul said,

  135. elaborated on this

  136. in writing to the Thessalonians,

  137. that church,

  138. as they went through persecution,

  139. going through a lot of mistreatment.

  140. I want you to look at how he said to respond.

  141. We looked at this a few weeks ago,

  142. 2 Thessalonians 1,

  143. but I want us to look at it again,

  144. what God is going to do.

  145. He says,

  146. God is just.

  147. He will pay back trouble

  148. to those who trouble you

  149. and give relief to you

  150. who are troubled

  151. and to us as well.

  152. This will happen

  153. when the Lord Jesus

  154. is revealed from heaven

  155. in blazing fire

  156. with His powerful angels.

  157. He will punish those

  158. who do not know God

  159. and do not obey

  160. the gospel of our Lord.

  161. They will be punished

  162. with everlasting destruction

  163. and shut out

  164. from the presence of the Lord

  165. and from the glory of His might

  166. on the day He comes

  167. to be glorified

  168. in His holy people

  169. and to be marveled at

  170. among all those

  171. who have believed.

  172. This includes you

  173. because you believed

  174. our testimony to you.

  175. Does that sound like

  176. Paul is thinking,

  177. well, God's just going to let things go

  178. and so should we.

  179. Not at all.

  180. Paul is assuring us

  181. we can trust God

  182. to make things right,

  183. to settle scores,

  184. to do what needs to be done

  185. in the lives of evil people

  186. who cause harm

  187. to God's people

  188. or to just people in general.

  189. Paul personally trusted God

  190. to do that

  191. when someone harmed him

  192. and what he was trying to do

  193. in his ministry.

  194. I want you to look at

  195. 2 Timothy chapter 4.

    2 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  196. Look at it.

  197. Listen to it.

  198. Alexander the coppersmith

  199. did me great harm.

  200. The Lord will repay him

  201. according to his deeds.

  202. Beware of him yourself

  203. for he strongly opposed

  204. our message.

  205. Paul doesn't sound like

  206. a pacifist, does he?

  207. Whoever this guy was,

  208. Alexander the coppersmith,

  209. he did Paul harm.

  210. He interfered in what Paul was doing

  211. and trying to preach

  212. and teach the gospel.

  213. Paul's mentality was,

  214. yeah, I can't get revenge.

  215. I'm not going to retaliate.

  216. But I am going to trust God.

  217. The Lord will repay him

  218. according to his deeds.

  219. And Paul took this guy

  220. and his

  221. trouble making seriously

  222. and told Timothy

  223. who he's writing to,

  224. you watch out for him too.

  225. See, Paul's not saying,

  226. oh, I'll just let it go.

  227. He said, this is a bad guy.

  228. God's going to get him.

  229. And Timothy,

  230. you watch out for him.

  231. Don't let him

  232. cause trouble for you

  233. if you can help it.

  234. But he will if he can.

  235. That's what Paul's saying to him.

  236. Now this doesn't mean that,

  237. doesn't mean that Paul didn't

  238. pray for his salvation.

  239. But at the same time,

  240. Paul didn't have this

  241. unrealistic understanding

  242. of life and evil

  243. and evil people.

  244. He knew that people could be evil.

  245. He knew that he was done wrong.

  246. And he knew that

  247. somewhere along the line,

  248. God would settle the score.

  249. God would make it right.

  250. But in the meantime,

  251. he warned Timothy,

  252. his associate.

  253. He warned him

  254. about this guy.

  255. He's a troublemaker.

  256. Every New Testament writer

  257. warns us

  258. that Christians will experience

  259. persecution in this world.

  260. We have been blessed

  261. in our country,

  262. throughout the history

  263. of our country,

  264. where we have been able

  265. to live out our faith,

  266. attend, worship,

  267. live like we want to live

  268. as Christians,

  269. and not be persecuted.

  270. We've had the privilege,

  271. historically,

  272. of even having laws

  273. that protect

  274. all of these rights,

  275. all of these privileges

  276. to worship

  277. and live out

  278. the Christian life.

  279. But in the big picture

  280. of the history of the church,

  281. most Christians

  282. experience persecution.

  283. Most Christians

  284. suffer

  285. for the mere fact

  286. that they believe in Jesus

  287. and seek to live

  288. a Christian life.

  289. We're warned

  290. that's going to happen.

  291. We're warned

  292. to expect that.

  293. But we're not supposed

  294. to retaliate

  295. or seek revenge

  296. when it happens to us.

  297. Instead,

  298. we need to trust God

  299. to deal with our enemies.

  300. We have to trust God

  301. to deal with our enemies

  302. in His way

  303. and at His time.

  304. But one of the ways

  305. that God works

  306. to right wrongs

  307. and bring about justice

  308. in this world

  309. is through human government.

  310. That's the second thing

  311. we're going to look at.

  312. God provides

  313. for our protection

  314. through governmental authority.

  315. Paul writes

  316. in Romans chapter 13

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  317. about this.

  318. God has assigned

  319. government

  320. the responsibility

  321. of providing justice

  322. in our society.

  323. Rewarding right

  324. and punishing wrong behavior.

  325. I want you to look with me

  326. at verses 3 and 4

  327. of Romans 13.

  328. It's on the screen.

  329. He says,

  330. For rulers are not

  331. a terror

  332. to good conduct

  333. but to bad.

  334. Would you have no fear

  335. of the one

  336. who is in authority?

  337. Then do what is good

  338. and you will receive

  339. His approval.

  340. For He is God's servant

  341. for your good.

  342. But if you do wrong

  343. be afraid

  344. for He does not

  345. bear the sword

  346. in vain.

  347. For He is the servant

  348. of God

  349. and avenger

  350. who carries out

  351. God's wrath

  352. on the wrongdoer.

  353. Paul is telling us here

  354. that governmental authorities

  355. are God's servants

  356. to the world

  357. to ensure that justice

  358. take place.

  359. Right now,

  360. think about it this way.

  361. our elected leaders,

  362. judges,

  363. law enforcement officers.

  364. They are unconsciously

  365. and imperfectly

  366. serving God's purpose

  367. of administering justice.

  368. Right now,

  369. for our benefit.

  370. Paul is emphasizing

  371. the authority

  372. of government here

  373. to punish lawbreakers.

  374. even to the point

  375. of administering

  376. deadly force,

  377. including the death penalty

  378. when needed.

  379. I want you to note

  380. in verse 4

  381. the phrase,

  382. bear the sword.

  383. For He does not

  384. bear the sword

  385. in vain.

  386. When Paul says

  387. that the government

  388. is authorized

  389. to bear the sword,

  390. he means that

  391. the government

  392. has been given

  393. authority by God

  394. to use the sword

  395. for the purpose

  396. that people used

  397. swords for

  398. in the first century,

  399. which was to put

  400. people to death,

  401. which was to

  402. protect themselves.

  403. This would apply

  404. to the government

  405. having authority

  406. to wage war,

  407. to carry out

  408. capital punishment,

  409. and to use

  410. lethal force

  411. when necessary

  412. in enforcing laws.

  413. Our government

  414. has the God-given

  415. right and authority

  416. to wage war

  417. against terrorism.

  418. Our government

  419. has the God-given

  420. authority

  421. to be engaged

  422. in the fight

  423. against ISIS

  424. right now.

  425. If you read

  426. the front page

  427. of this week's

  428. newsletter,

  429. I put an article

  430. in there by

  431. Russell Moore

  432. from the Ethics

  433. and Religious

  434. Liberty Commission

  435. of the Southern

  436. Baptist Convention.

  437. He talks about

  438. how there is

  439. no contradiction

  440. for us praying

  441. for our enemies

  442. that they might

  443. come to know Christ,

  444. but also

  445. when they're acting

  446. as our enemies,

  447. like ISIS is,

  448. for example.

  449. It's not wrong

  450. to kill them,

  451. to inflict

  452. major force

  453. firepower

  454. to take them out,

  455. to destroy

  456. their lives

  457. if possible.

  458. That is God's

  459. way

  460. of enabling

  461. civilization

  462. to

  463. experience

  464. the most peace,

  465. for justice

  466. to prevail,

  467. for properly

  468. authorized

  469. force

  470. to be

  471. inflicted

  472. on evil

  473. doers

  474. of whatever

  475. strife.

  476. Paul

  477. emphasized

  478. that God

  479. intends for

  480. government

  481. to be his

  482. instrument

  483. of justice

  484. to make

  485. things right

  486. in this world.

  487. Now I want to

  488. reiterate,

  489. we are not

  490. to seek vengeance

  491. for personal

  492. offenses.

  493. Look again,

  494. verse 19,

  495. beloved,

  496. never avenge

  497. yourselves,

  498. but leave it

  499. to the wrath

  500. of God,

  501. for it is

  502. written,

  503. vengeance

  504. is mine,

  505. I will

  506. repay,

  507. says the

  508. Lord.

  509. Instead,

  510. as a general

  511. rule,

  512. we are to

  513. look to the

  514. government

  515. to provide

  516. police

  517. and a

  518. court system

  519. in order

  520. to do this.

  521. Look at

  522. verse 4,

  523. for he is

  524. the servant

  525. of God,

  526. that is,

  527. he's embodying

  528. government,

  529. personifying

  530. government here

  531. as he writes,

  532. for he is the

  533. servant of God,

  534. an avenger

  535. who carries

  536. out God's

  537. wrath on

  538. the wrongdoer.

  539. This is the

  540. general way

  541. that we're

  542. supposed to

  543. seek justice

  544. in the world.

  545. The police

  546. and judges

  547. are called

  548. by God,

  549. put in place

  550. by God

  551. to be the

  552. good guys

  553. of society

  554. who enforce

  555. laws,

  556. who

  557. administrate

  558. justice.

  559. Therefore,

  560. it's not only

  561. acceptable,

  562. but it's

  563. ideal for

  564. Christians to

  565. fill these

  566. roles.

  567. It's good

  568. when a

  569. Christian serves

  570. as a police

  571. officer,

  572. when they're

  573. in the

  574. military,

  575. when they're

  576. serving in

  577. some way

  578. in our

  579. court and

  580. legal system.

  581. They're the

  582. best ones to

  583. administer God's

  584. justice.

  585. And we need to

  586. respect everyone

  587. who serves in

  588. these roles,

  589. everyone who

  590. serves in

  591. these offices,

  592. by virtue of

  593. what they're

  594. doing,

  595. God's agent,

  596. God's servant.

  597. We should

  598. respect the

  599. office.

  600. We should

  601. respect them.

  602. We as a

  603. society,

  604. and especially

  605. here in our

  606. country,

  607. we need to

  608. hold all

  609. governmental

  610. officials to

  611. a high

  612. standard.

  613. We need to

  614. hold them

  615. accountable.

  616. We need to

  617. have the

  618. expectation that

  619. they're going

  620. to do what

  621. they do in a

  622. fair and

  623. impartial kind

  624. of way.

  625. That's the

  626. only way you

  627. can have

  628. justice,

  629. isn't it?

  630. But no

  631. matter how

  632. many law

  633. enforcement

  634. officers we

  635. have, they

  636. can't be

  637. everywhere.

  638. So sometimes

  639. we, as

  640. private citizens,

  641. sometimes we're

  642. faced with

  643. situations where

  644. our lives or

  645. our health is

  646. threatened.

  647. Our families

  648. are threatened,

  649. and there's no

  650. time to call the

  651. police.

  652. what are we

  653. to do then as

  654. Christians?

  655. That's the third

  656. point.

  657. God allows us to

  658. protect ourselves

  659. and others we

  660. are responsible

  661. for or have an

  662. opportunity to

  663. protect.

  664. We are not to

  665. be pacifists in

  666. this world who

  667. just sort of stand

  668. by and whatever

  669. happens to us

  670. happens to us.

  671. It is not wrong.

  672. It is not sinful.

  673. It is not contrary

  674. to Scripture for us

  675. to defend

  676. ourselves and

  677. look to the

  678. resources God

  679. gives, provides

  680. to defend us.

  681. First, we can

  682. look to God to

  683. help us to

  684. defend ourselves.

  685. Jesus promised

  686. this kind of

  687. help to His

  688. disciples when

  689. they experienced

  690. persecution.

  691. Look at it in

  692. Luke chapter 11.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  693. Jesus said,

  694. And when they

  695. bring you before

  696. the synagogues

  697. and the rulers

  698. and the authorities,

  699. do not be anxious

  700. about how you

  701. should defend

  702. yourself or what

  703. you should say

  704. for the Holy

  705. Spirit will teach

  706. you in that very

  707. hour what you

  708. ought to say.

  709. Jesus is talking

  710. about here religious

  711. persecution.

  712. He's talking about

  713. when His disciples

  714. are brought up

  715. before the courts,

  716. before the magistrates,

  717. before whoever,

  718. because they're

  719. preaching and teaching

  720. about Him.

  721. And we read that

  722. in the book of Acts.

  723. And Jesus is saying

  724. when that happens,

  725. you can defend

  726. yourself and you

  727. can depend upon the

  728. Spirit of God

  729. who lives within

  730. you to equip you

  731. to know how to

  732. defend yourself

  733. in those kind of

  734. situations.

  735. Number two,

  736. we can use the

  737. legal system

  738. to defend ourselves.

  739. Paul did this

  740. on several occasions.

  741. As you read about

  742. his life and ministry

  743. in the book of Acts,

  744. you'll find

  745. there are times

  746. when the situation

  747. was such

  748. that he exerted

  749. his rights

  750. as a Roman citizen

  751. to avoid

  752. punishment,

  753. to avoid being

  754. beaten,

  755. to avoid death

  756. even.

  757. You see it on the

  758. screen, Acts chapter

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  759. 16 and Acts chapter

    Acts 25 chapter mention

  760. 25.

  761. In Acts chapter 16,

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  762. Paul was improperly

  763. imprisoned.

  764. He was a Roman

  765. citizen.

  766. And to make a long

  767. story short,

  768. Paul required

  769. the citizens

  770. of that country,

  771. the officials,

  772. the magistrates,

  773. it says,

  774. the magistrates

  775. of Philippi

  776. who had improperly

  777. imprisoned him,

  778. when they heard

  779. about it,

  780. they were going to

  781. just let him go

  782. and hope he'd just

  783. go off quietly.

  784. Paul said,

  785. no,

  786. they've got to come

  787. and let me out.

  788. He made a big

  789. deal about it,

  790. big to do about it

  791. because he was a

  792. Roman citizen

  793. and they had violated

  794. his rights.

  795. And then in Acts

    Acts 25 chapter mention

  796. chapter 25,

  797. Paul's life is being

  798. threatened.

  799. If he stays where

  800. he is,

  801. he's probably going

  802. to be assassinated.

  803. There's a plot

  804. to assassinate him.

  805. The only way

  806. that he sees

  807. to get out of that

  808. is to appeal

  809. to Caesar

  810. as a Roman citizen

  811. and he does that.

  812. That enables him

  813. to be protected

  814. and taken to Rome

  815. where he'll stand trial

  816. before Caesar himself.

  817. We can use

  818. the legal system

  819. to defend ourselves.

  820. That's not wrong.

  821. That's not

  822. not trusting God.

  823. use the system

  824. to demand justice,

  825. to protect yourself

  826. and your family,

  827. your home.

  828. We have biblical precedent

  829. to do that.

  830. Number three,

  831. we can use lethal weapons

  832. to defend ourselves.

  833. Peter did

  834. and so did

  835. some of the other disciples.

  836. Look with me

  837. at Luke chapter 22

    Luke 22:35

  838. verse 35 and 6.

  839. Jesus said to them,

  840. when I sent you out

  841. with no money bag

  842. or knapsack

  843. or sandals,

  844. did you lack anything?

  845. They said,

  846. nothing.

  847. Prior to the end,

  848. near the end

  849. of Jesus' ministry,

  850. he sent his disciples

  851. out to preach

  852. and teach

  853. and they were

  854. so well received

  855. at that time,

  856. people took care of them.

  857. people provide them

  858. with a place to stay,

  859. food to eat.

  860. But now,

  861. public opinion

  862. has turned.

  863. Jesus is about

  864. to be arrested

  865. and crucified.

  866. It's a different world.

  867. And so look

  868. what he says.

  869. He said to them,

  870. but now,

  871. let the one

  872. who has

  873. a money bag

  874. take it

  875. and likewise

  876. a knapsack.

  877. Let the one

  878. who has no sword

  879. sell his cloak

  880. and buy one.

  881. There's a lot

  882. of controversy

  883. among New Testament

  884. scholars over

  885. was Jesus

  886. literally talking

  887. about telling

  888. his disciples

  889. to go out

  890. and buy a sword

  891. or is he just

  892. using that

  893. as just sort

  894. of a figure

  895. of speech

  896. to prepare

  897. yourself

  898. for coming

  899. opposition.

  900. The truth is,

  901. it doesn't matter.

  902. Look at what

  903. Jesus said.

  904. He used

  905. a money bag,

  906. a knapsack,

  907. and a sword

  908. in positive

  909. ways

  910. to describe

  911. how they

  912. needed to

  913. prepare themselves

  914. for the future

  915. and how people

  916. were going to

  917. persecute them

  918. and oppose them.

  919. Jesus had no

  920. problem using

  921. that sword

  922. along those

  923. other items

  924. in a positive

  925. way.

  926. Peter not only

  927. kept the sword

  928. on his side,

  929. but Peter

  930. used his sword

  931. on one occasion.

  932. Look at it.

  933. And when those

  934. who were around

  935. him saw

  936. what would

  937. follow,

  938. they said,

  939. Lord,

  940. shall we

  941. strike with

  942. the sword?

  943. And one

  944. of them

  945. struck the

  946. servant

  947. of the

  948. high priest

  949. and cut

  950. off his

  951. right ear.

  952. That was

  953. Peter.

  954. Other

  955. gospels

  956. tell that

  957. same story.

  958. They tell

  959. more details.

  960. That was

  961. Peter.

  962. But Peter

  963. was wrong

  964. to do that.

  965. Peter

  966. should not

  967. have used

  968. his sword

  969. like that

  970. on that

  971. occasion.

  972. Jesus

  973. rebuked

  974. him.

  975. Jesus

  976. restored

  977. that

  978. man's

  979. ear.

  980. See,

  981. it was

  982. God's

  983. plan.

  984. This

  985. was the

  986. time

  987. when Jesus

  988. was going

  989. to be

  990. arrested,

  991. when he

  992. was going

  993. to be

  994. condemned

  995. and executed.

  996. This

  997. was God's

  998. plan for

  999. when Jesus

  1000. would die

  1001. on the

  1002. cross

  1003. in order

  1004. to save

  1005. us,

  1006. provide for

  1007. our salvation.

  1008. And so

  1009. it was not

  1010. going to be

  1011. stopped.

  1012. But the

  1013. point I

  1014. want to

  1015. make is,

  1016. I want you

  1017. to listen

  1018. to this.

  1019. Jesus did

  1020. not prohibit

  1021. his disciples

  1022. from carrying

  1023. swords.

  1024. And the

  1025. only reason

  1026. people would

  1027. carry the

  1028. sword was

  1029. for self-defense.

  1030. See, the

  1031. disciples were

  1032. with Jesus

  1033. for three

  1034. years.

  1035. He taught

  1036. them about

  1037. all the

  1038. things they

  1039. need to be

  1040. and do

  1041. as his

  1042. followers,

  1043. but he

  1044. never taught

  1045. them you

  1046. can't carry

  1047. a sword.

  1048. He never

  1049. taught them

  1050. to be

  1051. pacifists.

  1052. He never

  1053. taught them

  1054. they couldn't

  1055. be armed.

  1056. In today's

  1057. terms, he

  1058. would not

  1059. have prohibited

  1060. them from

  1061. having a

  1062. concealed

  1063. weapons

  1064. permit.

  1065. They didn't

  1066. need one

  1067. back then.

  1068. They carried

  1069. for self-defense.

  1070. Jesus never

  1071. said a word.

  1072. He even

  1073. spoke about

  1074. swords in a

  1075. positive way.

  1076. I really

  1077. believe that

  1078. what Jesus

  1079. and Paul

  1080. taught about

  1081. loving our

  1082. enemies and

  1083. overcoming evil

  1084. with good

  1085. was usually

  1086. directed at

  1087. people who

  1088. were persecuting

  1089. Christians.

  1090. They weren't

  1091. describing how

  1092. to deal with

  1093. evil people

  1094. who were out

  1095. to kill,

  1096. rape,

  1097. rob,

  1098. or terrorize

  1099. whoever crossed

  1100. their path.

  1101. Theologian

  1102. John Frame,

  1103. very respected

  1104. theologian,

  1105. writes a lot

  1106. about ethics.

  1107. He points out

  1108. this distinction.

  1109. Look at what

  1110. he says.

  1111. He says,

  1112. what Jesus

  1113. prohibits in

  1114. Matthew 5,

  1115. 38-42,

  1116. is not

  1117. self-defense,

  1118. but vengeance.

  1119. Jesus was

  1120. talking about

  1121. our response

  1122. to an insult,

  1123. a lawsuit,

  1124. forced labor,

  1125. and a request

  1126. for a loan.

  1127. If someone

  1128. seeks to kill

  1129. you or a

  1130. family member

  1131. and there's no

  1132. help available,

  1133. it is right

  1134. for you to

  1135. ward off

  1136. the attack

  1137. by force

  1138. if necessary.

  1139. Individuals

  1140. may sometimes

  1141. fight or

  1142. even kill

  1143. to preserve

  1144. a life,

  1145. but they

  1146. should not

  1147. use more

  1148. force than

  1149. is necessary

  1150. in a given

  1151. situation.

  1152. Two other

  1153. respected theologians,

  1154. Norman Geisler

  1155. and J.P.

  1156. Moreland.

  1157. Geisler has

  1158. written a lot

  1159. about ethics

  1160. as well.

  1161. They're more

  1162. forceful in

  1163. emphasizing the

  1164. importance,

  1165. even the

  1166. necessity

  1167. of Christians

  1168. sometimes

  1169. using force

  1170. to stop

  1171. evil.

  1172. Look at what

  1173. they say.

  1174. To prevent

  1175. murder

  1176. when one

  1177. could have

  1178. prevented it

  1179. is morally

  1180. wrong.

  1181. To allow

  1182. a rape

  1183. when one

  1184. could have

  1185. hindered it

  1186. is an

  1187. evil.

  1188. To watch

  1189. an act

  1190. of cruelty

  1191. to children

  1192. without trying

  1193. to intervene

  1194. is morally

  1195. inexcusable.

  1196. In brief,

  1197. not resisting

  1198. evil is an

  1199. evil of

  1200. omission.

  1201. And an

  1202. evil of

  1203. omission can

  1204. be just as

  1205. evil as an

  1206. evil of

  1207. commission.

  1208. Any man

  1209. who refuses

  1210. to protect

  1211. his wife

  1212. and children

  1213. against a

  1214. violent

  1215. intruder

  1216. fails them

  1217. morally.

  1218. We,

  1219. as Christians,

  1220. we have

  1221. the moral

  1222. obligation

  1223. to oppose

  1224. evil

  1225. that we

  1226. can't

  1227. oppose,

  1228. intervene,

  1229. help

  1230. someone,

  1231. prevent the

  1232. act from

  1233. taking place.

  1234. We have a

  1235. moral

  1236. responsibility

  1237. to do

  1238. that.

  1239. If that

  1240. includes

  1241. using

  1242. lethal

  1243. force,

  1244. then so

  1245. be it.

  1246. You know,

  1247. today,

  1248. one of the

  1249. ways our

  1250. government

  1251. has chosen

  1252. to protect

  1253. us as

  1254. citizens

  1255. in addition

  1256. to law

  1257. enforcement

  1258. is to

  1259. allow

  1260. citizens

  1261. to own

  1262. and carry

  1263. guns.

  1264. Now,

  1265. I want to be

  1266. real fair

  1267. here.

  1268. Every Christian

  1269. does not agree

  1270. with this,

  1271. but a

  1272. logical

  1273. application

  1274. of what

  1275. Paul says

  1276. in Romans

    Romans 13:1–4

  1277. chapter 13

  1278. verses 1

  1279. through 4

  1280. is that

  1281. owning and

  1282. carrying

  1283. guns

  1284. is a

  1285. morally

  1286. and legally

  1287. acceptable

  1288. option

  1289. for

  1290. Christians.

  1291. I've

  1292. always

  1293. believed

  1294. that.

  1295. I have

  1296. always

  1297. practiced

  1298. that

  1299. my

  1300. entire

  1301. life.

  1302. Now,

  1303. I know

  1304. accidents

  1305. happen.

  1306. Guns are

  1307. dangerous.

  1308. So are

  1309. automobiles.

  1310. So are

  1311. drugs.

  1312. So are

  1313. knives.

  1314. You've

  1315. got to be

  1316. very,

  1317. very,

  1318. very careful

  1319. if you own

  1320. a gun,

  1321. if you carry

  1322. a gun.

  1323. You don't get

  1324. second chances

  1325. a lot of

  1326. times when

  1327. accidents

  1328. happen with

  1329. them.

  1330. That is a

  1331. fact.

  1332. The fact

  1333. that some

  1334. people use

  1335. guns to

  1336. commit sinful

  1337. acts does

  1338. not mean that

  1339. guns are the

  1340. problem in

  1341. this country.

  1342. The problem

  1343. in this country

  1344. is sin.

  1345. the problem

  1346. in this

  1347. country is

  1348. that sinful

  1349. people do

  1350. sinful

  1351. things.

  1352. The truth

  1353. is since

  1354. the beginning

  1355. of humanity

  1356. people have

  1357. been killing

  1358. one another

  1359. with and

  1360. without weapons.

  1361. From a

  1362. biblical

  1363. perspective,

  1364. the ownership

  1365. of guns for

  1366. protection,

  1367. that's your

  1368. option.

  1369. That's a

  1370. personal choice

  1371. you can make.

  1372. do what you

  1373. think is

  1374. right for

  1375. you.

  1376. Act on

  1377. conviction.

  1378. If you

  1379. think you

  1380. shouldn't have

  1381. a gun as a

  1382. Christian,

  1383. then you

  1384. shouldn't have

  1385. one.

  1386. You're not

  1387. acting in

  1388. faith.

  1389. If you

  1390. violate your

  1391. conscience on

  1392. that, that

  1393. in itself is

  1394. an act of

  1395. sin, James

  1396. tells us.

  1397. But I also

  1398. want you to

  1399. understand there

  1400. is absolutely

  1401. nothing unspiritual

  1402. or sinful

  1403. about owning

  1404. a gun

  1405. and if

  1406. necessary,

  1407. using it.

  1408. That should

  1409. be under

  1410. very few

  1411. extreme

  1412. circumstances.

  1413. But gun

  1414. or no gun,

  1415. it is morally

  1416. right to defend

  1417. other people,

  1418. to defend

  1419. yourself against

  1420. the actions of

  1421. evil people,

  1422. to refuse

  1423. to intervene

  1424. against a

  1425. would-be

  1426. murderer,

  1427. rapist,

  1428. or other

  1429. violent

  1430. attacker is

  1431. a morally

  1432. evil act

  1433. of omission.

  1434. I'll just be

  1435. real honest

  1436. with you,

  1437. I can't

  1438. understand a

  1439. pacifist who

  1440. would not

  1441. intervene to

  1442. save or

  1443. protect the

  1444. life of one

  1445. of his

  1446. loved ones.

  1447. To me,

  1448. it is contrary

  1449. to the way

  1450. God made us

  1451. as human

  1452. beings.

  1453. We are

  1454. called by

  1455. God to

  1456. be peaceful

  1457. people.

  1458. To not

  1459. have this

  1460. attitude,

  1461. I don't

  1462. take nothing

  1463. off nobody.

  1464. That's wrong.

  1465. We're

  1466. called by

  1467. God to

  1468. not be

  1469. vengeful,

  1470. to not

  1471. retaliate,

  1472. to not

  1473. always be

  1474. trying to

  1475. pay somebody

  1476. back.

  1477. Our goal

  1478. needs to

  1479. be that

  1480. we avoid

  1481. violence

  1482. when possible.

  1483. That we

  1484. try to find

  1485. ways to

  1486. overcome evil

  1487. with good.

  1488. That is our

  1489. calling as

  1490. Christians.

  1491. That's what I

  1492. want you to

  1493. remember as we

  1494. leave here today.

  1495. If we're going to

  1496. be known for

  1497. just one thing,

  1498. we don't need to

  1499. be known for

  1500. the guns we

  1501. have and the

  1502. way we conceal

  1503. them and all

  1504. that kind of

  1505. stuff.

  1506. We're going to

  1507. be known for

  1508. one thing.

  1509. Jesus said we

  1510. need to be

  1511. known for our

  1512. love for one

  1513. another.

  1514. And we need to

  1515. learn to do the

  1516. loving thing.

  1517. And sometimes that

  1518. may be to protect

  1519. someone.

  1520. To resort to

  1521. lethal means to

  1522. protect someone.

  1523. one.

1524. But that will be a

  1525. rare case and

  1526. never happen in

  1527. most of our

  1528. lives.

  1529. So let's learn to

  1530. act in love,

  1531. even loving our

  1532. enemies.

  1533. Let's pray

  1534. together.

  1535. Dear God,

  1536. show us now how

  1537. we should respond

  1538. to you and your

  1539. message this

  1540. morning.

  1541. Father, help us

  1542. all to

  1543. understand that

  1544. we're not to

  1545. be spiteful,

  1546. vengeful,

  1547. unforgiving

  1548. people.

  1549. But help us to

  1550. see, Father, that

  1551. you do hold

  1552. high justice in

  1553. what is right and

  1554. opposing evil.

  1555. Help us just to

1556. be able to do it

  1557. the right way.

  1558. Help us to trust

  1559. you.

  1560. Help us to look

  1561. to government

  1562. authority in a

  1563. positive way and

  1564. use that, rely

  1565. upon that.

  1566. Help us, Father,

  1567. to pray that there

  1568. won't ever be a

  1569. time that we have

  1570. to use deadly

  1571. force.

  1572. in protecting

  1573. someone.

  1574. But dear God,

  1575. help us to not

  1576. be inactive,

  1577. passive in the

  1578. face of evil.

  1579. Help us to act

  1580. where we need to

  1581. act.

1582. Help us not to be

  1583. guilty of that sin

  1584. of omission.

  1585. And just in an

  1586. attitude of prayer,

  1587. let's listen to the

  1588. Lord and respond to

  1589. Him.

1590. I'd be happy to pray

1591. with you here at the

  1592. front.

  1593. If you want to

  1594. come during this

  1595. time.

  1596. I'd be happy to

  1597. pray with you now.

1598. Let's pray with you now.

1599. Let's pray with you now.

1600. Let's pray with you now.

1601. Let's pray with you now.
