  1. If you are a parent, have you ever been told that your child acts just like you?

  2. And when you heard that, what was the context?

  3. Wasn't good, was it?

  4. Wasn't good what your child was doing.

  5. Most of my son David's, which he's not here today, I wish he was.

  6. Most of his growing up years, I heard that over and over and over again.

  7. He would do something and I'd get all upset, irritated, ready to get him.

  8. And my dad would say something.

  9. I know another little boy who used to act that way.

  10. And my mother's favorite line was, he's just like you.

  11. Never said that when he did something good.

  12. Always said that when he was getting into something.

  13. Who are you like?

  14. Are you like one of your parents?

  15. Or a grandparent?

  16. Or an older brother or sister?

  17. Are you ever, or has anyone ever said, you are like your heavenly father?

  18. You'd think, well that's just crazy.

  19. Nobody would ever say that.

  20. That's impossible.

  21. Is it?

  22. Jesus said on more than one occasion,

  23. we should live in such a way that we would be called sons or children of our heavenly father.

  24. So if Jesus said that, it's not impossible, is it?

  25. We're going to look at one such place today in Matthew chapter 5, verse 43 and following.

    Matthew 5:43

  26. If you would, go ahead and turn there.

  27. And while you're turning, I want to sort of bring some people up to date if you haven't been here.

  28. Or remind those who may have slept through a part of it on one occasion or two.

  29. Over the past several weeks, we've been looking at how we're supposed to respond to people who mistreat us.

  30. Maybe insult us.

  31. And what we've discovered, it is not easy and it is not natural.

  32. Look at these examples.

  33. Paul writes in Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  34. Bless those who persecute you.

  35. Bless and do not curse them.

  36. A little bit later in verse 19.

  37. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God.

  38. For it is written, vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.

  39. And then we saw this from Matthew chapter 5, verse 38 and 39, what Jesus said.

    Matthew 5:38

  40. You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

  41. But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil.

  42. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

  43. If you were not here and you want to go into the details of that message,

  44. what Jesus actually was talking about, what He wasn't,

  45. go online at our church website and listen to it

  46. and find out exactly what Jesus is talking about.

  47. But just sort of as a little summary.

  48. We've learned that these statements were primarily,

  49. not exclusively, but primarily aimed at individuals

  50. who were being persecuted because they were Christians.

  51. What Jesus is talking about, He's writing to His disciples.

  52. Paul's, Paul's writing to Christians in Romans 12.

  53. And the idea is, as you live in this world trying to live out your faith

  54. and you encounter persecution, you encounter people who don't like you

  55. because you are my follower, because you're seeking to live as I have taught you.

  56. And they mistreat you.

  57. They insult you.

  58. Don't seek revenge is what they're saying.

  59. Don't retaliate.

  60. Don't have this idea,

  61. I don't take anything off anyone.

  62. I don't get mad.

  63. I get even.

  64. The idea in all these statements,

  65. we've got to learn as Christians to treat people better than they treat us.

  66. Boys and girls,

  67. boys and girls,

  68. we're supposed to treat people better than they treat us,

  69. not like they treat us.

  70. Last week,

  71. we looked specifically at how God does not call us

  72. to live as pacifists in this world.

  73. To just passively sit back and take all the abuse,

  74. all the whatever people want to take out on us.

  75. We looked at two things last week in particular.

  76. I want to give you a real quick summary.

  77. God provides justice and protection from evil people

  78. through governmental authority like police,

  79. like the court system,

  80. and on a national level,

  81. through the military.

  82. God intends for justice to be carried out in this world,

  83. for justice to be served,

  84. not so much individuals seeking it,

  85. but as a governmental authority seeking it,

  86. like a law enforcement officer,

  87. like a military person,

  88. like through the court system.

  89. And we get this in Romans chapter 13,

    Romans 13:1–4

  90. verses 1 through 4,

  91. but I just want to read verse 4 right now.

  92. Look at it.

  93. He says,

  94. But if you do wrong,

  95. be afraid for he,

  96. he's talking about the emperor,

  97. the king,

  98. he's talking about government

  99. as if government was a person.

  100. If you do wrong,

  101. be afraid for he does not bear the sword in vain.

  102. He's talking about lethal force.

  103. For he is the servant of God,

  104. an avenger who carries out God's wrath

  105. on the wrongdoer.

  106. We also saw last week

  107. that God allows us to defend ourselves

  108. and others with deadly force

  109. when threatened by evil.

  110. Here's what we saw last week.

  111. In Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  112. you see the verses on the screen.

  113. Jesus did not prohibit his disciples

  114. from walking around

  115. carrying a sword

  116. which was used to defend themselves.

  117. Jesus, over three years of ministry,

  118. when he came to the end,

  119. Peter used his in an inappropriate way.

  120. We looked at that last week.

  121. But the point I want to make is,

  122. Jesus did not tell his disciples,

  123. you can't be armed.

  124. They were armed.

  125. He knew they were armed.

  126. respected theologians explain

  127. that this is not only allowed

  128. defending yourself or other people

  129. under certain circumstances,

  130. but to do this is sometimes

  131. the absolute moral right thing to do.

  132. Listen to John Frame,

  133. one of the most well-respected

  134. ethical writers,

  135. theologians you'll find alive today.

  136. He says,

  137. if someone seeks to kill you

  138. or a family member

  139. and there is no help available,

  140. it is right

  141. for you to ward off the attack

  142. by force if necessary.

  143. Individuals may sometimes fight

  144. or even kill

  145. to preserve a life,

  146. but they should not use force,

  147. they should not use more force

  148. that is necessary

  149. in a given situation.

  150. Norman Geisler is another

  151. well-respected writer on ethics.

  152. He, along with J.P. Moreland,

  153. they make an even stronger statement.

  154. Look at what they say.

  155. To permit murder

  156. when one could have prevented it

  157. is morally wrong.

  158. To allow a rape

  159. when one could have been hindered

  160. is an evil.

  161. To watch an act of cruelty

  162. to children without trying

  163. to intervene

  164. is morally inexcusable.

  165. In brief,

  166. not resisting evil

  167. is an evil of omission.

  168. And an evil of omission

  169. can be just as evil

  170. as an evil of commission.

  171. Any man who refuses

  172. to protect his wife

  173. and children

  174. against a violent intruder

  175. fails them morally.

  176. There's a time

  177. and there's a place.

  178. We should pray

  179. that it never happens

  180. when Christians

  181. should act

  182. with force

  183. to protect someone,

  184. to protect their own life

  185. and it's morally right.

  186. It's not just something

  187. that can be done.

  188. It's the morally right thing

  189. to do.

  190. God provides a way

  191. for us in this world,

  192. even us as Christians,

  193. to seek justice,

  194. to be protected

  195. from evil people

  196. who have no respect

  197. for human life,

  198. no respect

  199. for morality

  200. or authority.

  201. That's important

  202. to understand.

  203. But,

  204. most of us

  205. will live our entire lives

  206. lives.

  207. And our enemies

  208. will never be

  209. such evil people

  210. as I just described.

  211. Most of us,

  212. we have enemies

  213. who may insult us,

  214. who may mistreat us,

  215. who may abuse us,

  216. who may take advantage

  217. of us,

  218. who may persecute us

  219. because we're Christians,

  220. but they don't really

  221. threaten our life

  222. or our family

  223. or our community,

  224. our country.

  225. The way

  226. we

  227. interact

  228. with

  229. enemies

  230. is what Jesus says

  231. in Matthew 5,

  232. 43

  233. as the general rule

  234. for us

  235. as individuals.

  236. So let's look at it.

  237. Matthew 5,

  238. 43.

  239. You have heard

  240. that it was said,

  241. you shall love

  242. your neighbor

  243. and hate

  244. your enemy.

  245. But I say to you,

  246. love your enemies

  247. and pray for those

  248. who persecute you

  249. so that you may be

  250. sons of your Father

  251. who is in heaven.

  252. The idea is not

  253. you love your enemy

  254. and pray for those

  255. who persecute you

  256. and by doing that

  257. you become sons

  258. of your Father

  259. or children of God.

  260. No.

  261. By loving your enemy,

  262. praying for those

  263. who persecute you,

  264. you demonstrate,

  265. Jesus is saying,

  266. that you already

  267. are

  268. a child of God.

  269. Verse 46 now.

  270. Now back up,

  271. verse 45.

  272. So that you may

  273. be sons of your

  274. Father who is in heaven

  275. for he makes

  276. his son

  277. rise on the evil

  278. and on the good

  279. and sends rain

  280. on the just

  281. and on the unjust.

  282. For if you love

  283. those who love you,

  284. what reward

  285. do you have?

  286. Do not even

  287. the tax collectors

  288. do the same?

  289. And if you greet

  290. only your brothers,

  291. he's talking about

  292. a greeting,

  293. not just,

  294. hey, how you doing,

  295. but a Jewish greeting

  296. of peace,

  297. of shalom.

  298. You're really wishing

  299. well,

  300. wholeness,

  301. a good quality

  302. of life on someone.

  303. It's a heartfelt

  304. kind of expression.

  305. Look at it again.

  306. And if you greet

  307. only your brothers,

  308. what more

  309. are you doing

  310. than others?

  311. Do not even

  312. the Gentiles

  313. do the same?

  314. You therefore

  315. must be perfect

  316. as your heavenly

  317. Father is perfect.

  318. He's talking there

  319. about being complete,

  320. about being whole,

  321. about living up

  322. to what God's

  323. called us to

  324. in the Sermon

  325. on the Mount.

  326. That last phrase,

  327. sort of a way

  328. he ends this

  329. section of the

  330. Sermon on the Mount.

  331. But let's look at

  332. what Jesus is

  333. talking about.

  334. First,

  335. the natural way

  336. to respond to enemies

  337. is what he says

  338. in verse 43.

  339. You've heard

  340. that it was said,

  341. you shall love

  342. your neighbor

  343. and hate your enemy.

  344. The Jewish leaders

  345. of Jesus' day

  346. taught people

  347. that's what

  348. you're supposed

  349. to do.

  350. That's what you,

  351. as a good Jew,

  352. will do.

  353. But that was not

  354. what the Old Testament

  355. taught.

  356. The Old Testament,

  357. most of us

  358. in here know,

  359. Jesus called it

  360. the second greatest

  361. commandment,

  362. love your neighbor.

  363. neighbor as yourself.

  364. Throughout the Old Testament,

  365. God commanded

  366. his people

  367. to love other people,

  368. not just their fellow Jews,

  369. but even an alien

  370. living in your land.

  371. Help them,

  372. do certain things

  373. to provide

  374. for some of their needs.

  375. God commanded

  376. his people.

  377. But over time,

  378. the Jews

  379. developed this

  380. mentality,

  381. love your neighbor

  382. and your neighbor

  383. is a fellow Jew.

  384. Period.

  385. Love your neighbor,

  386. your fellow Jew,

  387. and then

  388. hate everybody else.

  389. Look down,

  390. despise everyone else.

  391. And that was the mentality

  392. that was developed.

  393. To a Jewish person,

  394. if you were not

  395. a part of that group,

  396. you were looked down upon.

  397. You were a Gentile dog.

  398. You were not worthy

  399. of being spoken to

  400. in a proper way

  401. as we saw there

  402. toward the end.

  403. What Jesus is doing here

  404. when he says,

  405. you have heard

  406. that it was said,

  407. you shall love your neighbor

  408. and hate your enemy.

  409. He's not quoting

  410. an Old Testament passage.

  411. He's quoting

  412. what was being said

  413. at that time.

  414. And what was being said

  415. at that time

  416. was this.

  417. Love people

  418. in a way

  419. that comes naturally.

  420. naturally.

  421. What was being said

  422. at that time

  423. is you just

  424. do what feels good.

  425. You love those

  426. that are like you.

  427. People who look

  428. and think

  429. and act like you.

  430. You love them

  431. but just

  432. hate.

  433. Look down

  434. at those

  435. who are not like you.

  436. Now,

  437. loving people

  438. who are like us,

  439. anybody can do that.

  440. You know,

  441. you think to yourself,

  442. I love my family.

  443. I love my friends.

  444. I love people

  445. I work with.

  446. I love people

  447. I hang out with.

  448. There's a lot of people

  449. in this world.

  450. I genuinely

  451. care about them.

  452. Have an emotional

  453. attachment to them.

  454. So what?

  455. Everybody likes people

  456. who are like them.

  457. Jesus says

  458. even the despised

  459. tax collectors,

  460. those traitorous Jews

  461. who work for the Romans,

  462. even those Gentile dogs,

  463. they do that.

  464. There's no reward

  465. in that.

  466. You're doing

  467. nothing special.

  468. Look at that

  469. follow-up question,

  470. the hard question,

  471. verse 47.

  472. What are you doing

  473. more than others

  474. if you just love

  475. those who love you?

  476. or you just love

  477. those who are like you?

  478. What Jesus wants us

  479. to think is,

  480. how is your love

  481. as a follower of me?

  482. How is your love

  483. different than unbelievers?

  484. Love those

  485. who are close to you.

  486. That's good.

  487. It's not bad.

  488. Love your family.

  489. Love your friends.

  490. Love your fellow

  491. Sunday school class members.

  492. Love those people

  493. you work with,

  494. you play sports with,

  495. you hang out with.

  496. That's good.

  497. But don't pass yourself

  498. on the back.

  499. Don't think that makes you

  500. some kind of model Christian.

  501. That's nothing special.

  502. Gang members

  503. love one another,

  504. don't they?

  505. Thugs

  506. have a brotherhood.

  507. So to love people

  508. just like you

  509. means basically

  510. nothing

  511. in terms of it

  512. honoring God

  513. or being something

  514. commendable

  515. or something

  516. that is rewarded.

  517. The question

  518. that Jesus

  519. is confronting us

  520. with this

  521. is this.

  522. Are you demonstrating

  523. that you are God's child

  524. by the way

  525. that you love people

  526. who are difficult to love

  527. that are in your life

  528. and you know

  529. who they are?

  530. Are you

  531. showing the world

  532. that you're a child

  533. of God

  534. by loving people

  535. that you don't like?

  536. And I hope

  537. nobody's gonna

  538. be so spiritual

  539. as to say

  540. oh there's no one

  541. I don't like.

  542. You're lying to yourself.

  543. You don't like everybody.

  544. I can tell you this

  545. everybody doesn't like you.

  546. We know that

  547. don't we?

  548. Don't we?

  549. Aren't we

  550. aware of that?

  551. Everybody does not

  552. like me.

  553. Think it to yourself.

  554. Everybody doesn't like me.

  555. But

  556. the opposite's true too.

  557. I don't like everybody.

  558. that's just the way it is.

  559. That's just natural.

  560. But what Jesus

  561. is calling us

  562. as Christians

  563. as His people

  564. love people

  565. that you don't like.

  566. Love people

  567. that don't like you.

  568. Love people

  569. who offend you.

  570. Who insult you.

  571. who oppose you

  572. about certain things.

  573. See what Jesus

  574. is teaching here

  575. is to go against

  576. our natural way

  577. of dealing with

  578. our enemies.

  579. So let's look at

  580. the next thing.

  581. The supernatural way

  582. to respond to our enemies.

  583. What we're talking about

  584. all these messages

  585. from Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  586. about

  587. not resisting evil

  588. what Jesus

  589. is talking about

  590. about

  591. taking an insult

  592. turning the other cheek

  593. and what we're looking at today.

  594. This is not normal.

  595. This is not natural.

  596. This is something

  597. that God has to give us

  598. the help

  599. the grace

  600. like Brian was thinking

  601. and the internal help

  602. as we'll talk about

  603. in a moment

  604. to do.

  605. The supernatural way

  606. to respond to our enemies

  607. verse 44

  608. love your enemies.

  609. Let's think about

  610. what this does not mean

  611. first.

  612. Jesus is not saying

  613. when He says

  614. love your enemies

  615. you have to have

  616. an emotional

  617. or an affectionate

  618. kind of love

  619. for them

  620. like you do

  621. your family.

  622. A lot of people

  623. are sitting right now

  624. you're sitting

  625. next to someone

  626. who is your

  627. family member

  628. or a good friend

  629. you just look around

  630. for a moment

  631. if you would

  632. just sort of glance around

  633. you don't have to stare

  634. at everybody

  635. but just look around

  636. if you're honest

  637. you love

  638. certain people

  639. in this room

  640. a whole lot more

  641. more heartfelt

  642. more deeply

  643. than you love

  644. other people.

  645. I can't imagine

  646. anybody

  647. saying otherwise.

  648. Jesus is not saying

  649. you ought to love

  650. your enemy

  651. like you love

  652. your spouse

  653. or your child

  654. or your parent

  655. or your best friend

  656. or anything like that.

  657. That is not

  658. in the

  659. realm of possibility

  660. that Jesus is talking about.

  661. Jesus is really

  662. not even saying

  663. that you have to

  664. like someone

  665. who is your enemy.

  666. We all have

  667. enemies

  668. of various

  669. levels

  670. and he's not

  671. even saying

  672. don't let them

  673. be enemies.

  674. Hear this?

  675. He says

  676. love your enemy

  677. you identify

  678. this person

  679. is an enemy

  680. this person

  681. maybe has

  682. something against me

  683. they do stuff

  684. to me

  685. they hurt me

  686. you don't have

  687. an emotional

  688. feeling toward

  689. them

  690. you don't

  691. like them

  692. what Jesus

  693. is saying here

  694. when he says

  695. love your enemies

  696. is he's saying

  697. have a self

  698. giving type

  699. of love

  700. for them

  701. a love

  702. that seeks

  703. their good

  704. even when

  705. they don't

  706. seek your good

  707. a love

  708. that meets

  709. a person's

  710. need

  711. Jesus

  712. is not

  713. telling us

  714. to feel good

  715. about our enemy

  716. but he is

  717. telling us

  718. to do

  719. good

  720. to our

  721. enemies

  722. I think

  723. one good way

  724. to explain

  725. this

  726. or illustrate

  727. this

  728. Kent Hughes

  729. is a pastor

  730. he wrote

  731. about

  732. a book

  733. on Sermon

  734. on the Mount

  735. he tells

  736. a story

  737. a true life

  738. story

  739. it was

  740. one of his

  741. wife's

  742. best friends

  743. she and

  744. her family

  745. moved to

  746. a town

  747. house

  748. in a little

  749. community

  750. where everybody

  751. was quiet

  752. and neat

  753. got along

  754. well

  755. took good

  756. care of

  757. their place

  758. they got

  759. moved in

  760. they fixed

  761. it up

  762. the way

  763. they wanted

  764. it fixed

  765. up

  766. they worked

  767. outside

  768. in the yard

  769. front yard

  770. backyard

  771. they just

  772. had everything

  773. neat as a pen

  774. they were

  775. just as happy

  776. as they could

  777. be

  778. living in

  779. their

  780. town

  781. house

  782. when all

  783. of a

  784. sudden

  785. a family

  786. moved in

  787. next door

  788. that was

  789. just

  790. night and

  791. day

  792. different

  793. from

  794. everybody

  795. else

  796. the family

  797. that moved

  798. in next

  799. door

  800. they were

  801. loud

  802. they were

  803. obnoxious

  804. they were

  805. profane

  806. they could

  807. hear them

  808. yelling

  809. and screaming

  810. at one

  811. another

  812. using

  813. profanity

  814. toward one

  815. another

  816. in their

  817. town

  818. house

  819. they trashed

  820. their front

  821. yard

  822. instead of

  823. a green

  824. area

  825. like other

  826. people

  827. had

  828. a desert

  829. would

  830. just

  831. junk

  832. all over

  833. that front

  834. yard

  835. among

  836. these

  837. neat

  838. town

  839. homes

  840. well this

  841. lady

  842. let's call

  843. her

  844. family

  845. the

  846. Jones

  847. family

  848. their

  849. life

  850. became

  851. miserable

  852. because

  853. they couldn't

  854. get away

  855. from it

  856. they went

  857. outside

  858. they saw

  859. signs

  860. of this

  861. neighbor

  862. inside

  863. they heard

  864. these

  865. neighbors

  866. Hughes

  867. said

  868. the final

  869. straw

  870. for the

  871. Jones

  872. family

  873. is when

  874. the boys

  875. of the

  876. Wyle

  877. family

  878. climbed

  879. over

  880. the

  881. backyard

  882. fence

  883. and

  884. spray

  885. painted

  886. orange

  887. paint

  888. on the

  889. Jones

  890. family

  891. patio

  892. wall

  893. where

  894. everything

  895. was neat

  896. and clean

  897. and fresh

  898. looking

  899. he says

  900. that

  901. Ms. Jones

  902. was just

  903. absolutely

  904. enraged

  905. she not

  906. only did

  907. not like

  908. these

  909. neighbors

  910. but she

  911. expressed

  912. that to

  913. God

  914. she was

  915. committed

  916. Christian

  917. and

  918. she

  919. understood

  920. what prayer

  921. was all

  922. about

  923. so she

  924. just

  925. talked

  926. to God

  927. I don't

  928. like

  929. these

  930. people

  931. I don't

  932. want to

  933. be around

  934. these

  935. people

  936. and she

  937. just sort

  938. of

  939. fussed

  940. in her

  941. prayer time

  942. complained

  943. as she

  944. prayed

  945. about these

  946. sorry

  947. neighbors

  948. that she

  949. had to put

  950. up with

  951. but then

  952. she made

  953. this statement

  954. to Hughes

  955. his wife

  956. she

  957. realized

  958. after a

  959. period

  960. of time

  961. I'm

  962. wrong

  963. in my

  964. attitude

  965. my

  966. heart

  967. is not

  968. right

  969. with

  970. God

  971. much

  972. less

  973. these

  974. people

  975. and she

  976. says

  977. she

  978. literally

  979. got down

  980. on her

  981. knees

  982. and prayed

  983. Lord

  984. you know

  985. that I

  986. don't like

  987. these

  988. people

  989. at all

  990. help

  991. me

  992. to love

  993. them

  994. she said

  995. when she

  996. got up

  997. she felt

  998. absolutely

  999. no

  1000. different

  1001. but she

  1002. decided

  1003. she was

  1004. going to

  1005. start

  1006. demonstrating

  1007. love

  1008. toward

  1009. those

  1010. neighbors

  1011. she would

  1012. start

  1013. doing

  1014. what she

  1015. would

  1016. do

  1017. if she

  1018. did

  1019. in fact

  1020. love

  1021. them

  1022. and she

  1023. started

  1024. doing

  1025. that

  1026. she

  1027. started

  1028. doing

  1029. things

  1030. like

  1031. you know

  1032. baking

  1033. a pie

  1034. taking

  1035. things

  1036. to them

  1037. to eat

  1038. just

  1039. being

  1040. friendly

  1041. to

  1042. them

  1043. asking

  1044. the

  1045. other

  1046. lady

  1047. into

  1048. her

  1049. home

  1050. to

  1051. just

  1052. drink

  1053. coffee

  1054. talk

  1055. get

  1056. to

  1057. know

  1058. one

  1059. another

  1060. this

  1061. lady

  1062. said

  1063. this

  1064. Jones

  1065. lady

  1066. said

  1067. that

  1068. they

  1069. actually

  1070. developed

  1071. she

  1072. developed

  1073. a

  1074. relationship

  1075. with

  1076. that

  1077. lady

  1078. and

  1079. with

  1080. her

  1081. family

  1082. and over

  1083. a period

  1084. of time

  1085. those

  1086. neighbors

  1087. did

  1088. not

  1089. change

  1090. they

  1091. were

  1092. still

  1093. loud

  1094. and

  1095. profane

  1096. and

  1097. junky

  1098. but

  1099. Miss

  1100. Jones

  1101. said

  1102. I

  1103. did

  1104. begin

  1105. to

  1106. love

  1107. them

  1108. and

  1109. after

  1110. a

  1111. period

  1112. of

  1113. time

  1114. those

  1115. neighbors

  1116. moved

  1117. away

  1118. and

  1119. Mrs.

  1120. Jones

  1121. response

  1122. was

  1123. she

  1124. wept

  1125. she

  1126. said

  1127. she

  1128. had

  1129. not only

  1130. learned

  1131. to

  1132. love

  1133. them

  1134. she

  1135. had

  1136. learned

  1137. to

  1138. like

  1139. them

  1140. even

  1141. though

  1142. they

  1143. didn't

  1144. change

  1145. their

  1146. ways

  1147. she

  1148. liked

  1149. them

  1150. she

  1151. just

  1152. didn't

  1153. like

  1154. their

  1155. ways

  1156. C.S.

  1157. Lewis

  1158. wrote

  1159. in his

  1160. book

  1161. Mere

  1162. Christianity

  1163. the

  1164. worldly

  1165. man

  1166. treats

  1167. certain

  1168. people

  1169. kindly

  1170. because

  1171. he

  1172. likes

  1173. them

  1174. the

  1175. Christian

  1176. trying

  1177. to

  1178. treat

  1179. everybody

  1180. kindly

  1181. finds

  1182. himself

  1183. liking

  1184. more

  1185. and more

  1186. people

  1187. as he

  1188. goes

  1189. on

  1190. what

  1191. Lewis

  1192. is saying

  1193. there

  1194. what

  1195. that

  1196. Miss

  1197. Jones

  1198. actually

  1199. did

  1200. that's

  1201. hard

  1202. almost

  1203. impossible

  1204. for us

  1205. to do

  1206. on our

  1207. own

  1208. but as

  1209. we've

  1210. talked

  1211. about

  1212. throughout

  1213. this

  1214. series

  1215. as

  1216. Christians

  1217. the

  1218. Spirit

  1219. of

  1220. God

  1221. lives

  1222. within

  1223. us

  1224. and

  1225. the

  1226. Holy

  1227. Spirit

  1228. specializes

  1229. in

  1230. love

  1231. Paul

  1232. writes

  1233. in Galatians

  1234. 5

  1235. the fruit

  1236. of the

  1237. Spirit

  1238. is

  1239. love

  1240. joy

  1241. peace

  1242. patience

  1243. kindness

  1244. goodness

  1245. faithfulness

  1246. gentleness

  1247. and self

  1248. control

  1249. some

  1250. people

  1251. think

  1252. that

  1253. when

  1254. Paul

  1255. is

  1256. writing

  1257. about

  1258. that

  1259. he's

  1260. saying

  1261. the fruit

  1262. of the

  1263. Spirit

  1264. is

  1265. love

  1266. and

  1267. those

  1268. other

  1269. qualities

  1270. are

  1271. just

  1272. part

  1273. of

  1274. what

  1275. love

  1276. is

  1277. if

  1278. we

  1279. are

  1280. children

  1281. of

  1282. God

  1283. we

  1284. can

  1285. love

  1286. our

  1287. enemies

  1288. because

  1289. the

  1290. Spirit

  1291. of

  1292. God

  1293. living

  1294. in

  1295. us

  1296. will

  1297. help

  1298. us

  1299. to

  1300. will

  1301. enable

  1302. us

  1303. to

  1304. and

  1305. one

  1306. of

  1307. the

  1308. ways

  1309. we

  1310. can

  1311. get

  1312. that

  1313. love

  1314. flowing

  1315. more

  1316. naturally

  1317. as a

  1318. Christian

  1319. naturally

  1320. is to

  1321. pray for

  1322. them

  1323. look at

  1324. verse 44

  1325. pray for

  1326. those who

  1327. persecute

  1328. you

  1329. pray for

  1330. people

  1331. who have

  1332. it in

  1333. for you

  1334. because you're

  1335. a Christian

  1336. and so they

  1337. insult you

  1338. they mistreat

  1339. you

  1340. they may

  1341. even

  1342. abuse

  1343. you

  1344. only because

  1345. they don't

  1346. believe like

  1347. you believe

  1348. they don't like

  1349. it because

  1350. you believe

  1351. and live like

  1352. you do

  1353. so they

  1354. persecute

  1355. you

  1356. but what

  1357. Jesus is

  1358. saying here

  1359. praying for

  1360. them

  1361. help us

  1362. to love

  1363. them

  1364. it's

  1365. hard to

  1366. hate

  1367. people

  1368. that you

  1369. talk to

  1370. God

  1371. about

  1372. just like

  1373. that lady

  1374. she didn't

  1375. like them

  1376. at all

  1377. despised

  1378. them

  1379. but as

  1380. she started

  1381. talking to

  1382. God

  1383. about

  1384. them

  1385. not the

  1386. first time

  1387. probably

  1388. not even

  1389. for several

  1390. days

  1391. but as

  1392. she was

  1393. talking to

  1394. God

  1395. about

  1396. them

  1397. she

  1398. eventually

  1399. got

  1400. under

  1401. conviction

  1402. I've

  1403. got the

  1404. wrong

  1405. attitude

  1406. toward

  1407. God

  1408. and

  1409. these

  1410. people

  1411. it's

  1412. hard

  1413. to pray

  1414. for

  1415. people

  1416. about

  1417. people

  1418. and not

  1419. develop

  1420. something

  1421. positive

  1422. in relation

  1423. to them

  1424. so praying

  1425. for our

  1426. enemies

  1427. that will

  1428. help us

  1429. to develop

  1430. this love

  1431. that Jesus

  1432. commands

  1433. us

  1434. to have

  1435. for them

  1436. and the

  1437. spirit of

  1438. God

  1439. living

  1440. within

  1441. us

  1442. that's

  1443. the

  1444. spirit

  1445. of

  1446. Christ

  1447. he will

  1448. help

  1449. us

  1450. look at

  1451. how

  1452. Jesus

  1453. did

  1454. as

  1455. followers

  1456. of

  1457. Jesus

  1458. the

  1459. Holy

  1460. Spirit

  1461. will

  1462. help

  1463. us

  1464. to

  1465. become

  1466. more

  1467. like

  1468. Jesus

  1469. and

  1470. Jesus

  1471. is

  1472. the

  1473. greatest

  1474. example

  1475. who

  1476. prayed

  1477. for

  1478. those

  1479. who

  1480. crucified

  1481. him

  1482. like

  1483. this

  1484. father

  1485. forgive

  1486. them

  1487. for

  1488. they

  1489. know

  1490. not

  1491. what

  1492. they

  1493. do

  1494. this

  1495. is

  1496. the

  1497. kind

  1498. of

  1499. love

  1500. that

  1501. demonstrates

  1502. that

  1503. we

  1504. are

  1505. God's

  1506. children

  1507. as

  1508. Jesus

  1509. says

  1510. there

  1511. in

  1512. verse

  1513. 45

  1514. God

  1515. demonstrates

  1516. his

  1517. love

  1518. for

  1519. all

  1520. people

  1521. even

  1522. those

  1523. who

  1524. hate

  1525. him

  1526. by

  1527. the

  1528. way

  1529. that

  1530. he

  1531. gives

  1532. good

  1533. gifts

  1534. to

  1535. everybody

  1536. look at

  1537. it

  1538. verse

  1539. 45

  1540. again

  1541. he

  1542. causes

  1543. the

  1544. rain

  1545. he

  1546. makes

  1547. his

  1548. sun

  1549. shine

  1550. on

  1551. the

  1552. evil

  1553. and

  1554. on

  1555. the

  1556. good

  1557. and

  1558. sends

  1559. rain

  1560. on

  1561. the

  1562. just

  1563. and

  1564. on

  1565. the

  1566. unjust

  1567. that's

  1568. what's

  1569. called

  1570. common

  1571. grace

  1572. God

  1573. just

  1574. shows

  1575. his

  1576. common

  1577. undeserved

  1578. favor

  1579. to

  1580. everybody

  1581. in

  1582. various

  1583. ways

  1584. even

  1585. those

  1586. who

  1587. hate

  1588. him

  1589. and

  1590. despise

  1591. him

  1592. who

  1593. are

  1594. his

  1595. enemies

  1596. you know

  1597. we need

  1598. to stop

  1599. sometimes

  1600. just

  1601. pause

  1602. from time

  1603. to time

  1604. and think

  1605. my

  1606. salvation

  1607. was not

  1608. anything

  1609. I deserved

  1610. Paul

  1611. makes it

  1612. clear

  1613. from this

  1614. verse

  1615. in Romans

  1616. 5

  1617. 8

  1618. God

  1619. shows

  1620. his

  1621. love

  1622. for us

  1623. and this

  1624. is that

  1625. while we

  1626. were still

  1627. sinners

  1628. Christ

  1629. died

  1630. for us

  1631. you see

  1632. God

  1633. comes

  1634. to us

  1635. to

  1636. save

  1637. us

  1638. not

  1639. when we

  1640. cleaned

  1641. up

  1642. our

  1643. life

  1644. but

  1645. when

  1646. we're

  1647. still

  1648. sinners

  1649. and

  1650. willing

  1651. to

  1652. admit

  1653. our

  1654. sin

  1655. and

  1656. our

  1657. need

  1658. for

  1659. him

  1660. and

  1661. our

  1662. need

  1663. for

  1664. his

  1665. forgiveness

  1666. think

  1667. about

  1668. this

  1669. for a

  1670. moment

  1671. there

  1672. are

  1673. some

  1674. things

  1675. about

  1676. you

  1677. if

  1678. you're

  1679. a

  1680. parent

  1681. you

  1682. and

  1683. your

  1684. spouse

  1685. that

  1686. can

  1687. be

  1688. seen

  1689. in

  1690. your

  1691. children

  1692. there

  1693. are

  1694. some

  1695. things

  1696. about

  1697. Lisa

  1698. and

  1699. me

  1700. that

  1701. can

  1702. be

  1703. seen

  1704. in

  1705. both

  1706. of

  1707. our

  1708. boys

  1709. children

  1710. demonstrate

  1711. something

  1712. of the

  1713. nature

  1714. of their

  1715. parents

  1716. that also

  1717. applies to

  1718. God's

  1719. children

  1720. you know

  1721. if you're

  1722. a Christian

  1723. the spirit

  1724. of God

  1725. has been

  1726. at work

  1727. in you

  1728. ever since

  1729. God

  1730. saved

  1731. you

  1732. and so

  1733. there should

  1734. be evidence

  1735. of his

  1736. presence

  1737. and his

  1738. working

  1739. in you

  1740. you know

  1741. when

  1742. when God

  1743. saves you

  1744. puts his

  1745. spirit

  1746. in you

  1747. Paul

  1748. describes it

  1749. like this

  1750. in 2 Corinthians

  1751. 5 17

  1752. anyone

  1753. if anyone

  1754. is in

  1755. Christ

  1756. he is a

  1757. new

  1758. creation

  1759. God

  1760. does a

  1761. new

  1762. work

  1763. he puts

  1764. the spirit

  1765. in us

  1766. gives us

  1767. a new

  1768. way of

  1769. looking at

  1770. life

  1771. thinking

  1772. about

  1773. life

  1774. living

  1775. life

  1776. a new

  1777. way to

  1778. live

  1779. as you

  1780. look at

  1781. yourself

  1782. how you

  1783. live

  1784. how you

  1785. relate

  1786. to

  1787. people

  1788. even

  1789. enemies

  1790. can you

  1791. see evidence

  1792. of the

  1793. nature

  1794. or character

  1795. of your

  1796. heavenly

  1797. father

  1798. in you

  1799. there will

  1800. not be

  1801. perfect

  1802. likeness

  1803. in anyone

  1804. but there

  1805. should be

  1806. some

  1807. likeness

  1808. and it

  1809. should be

  1810. growing

  1811. developing

  1812. over time

  1813. and that

  1814. certainly

  1815. should

  1816. include

  1817. love

  1818. even

  1819. loving

  1820. your

  1821. enemies

  1822. if there's

  1823. no evidence

  1824. of the

  1825. love of

  1826. God

  1827. in you

  1828. there's

  1829. no biblical

  1830. basis

  1831. for you

  1832. to even

  1833. think

  1834. that you

  1835. are a

  1836. Christian

  1837. that you

  1838. are a

  1839. child

  1840. of God

  1841. look at

  1842. what it

  1843. says

  1844. in 1

  1845. John

  1846. 4

  1847. whoever

  1848. does not

  1849. love

  1850. does not

  1851. know

  1852. God

  1853. because

  1854. God

  1855. is

  1856. love

  1857. so let

  1858. me just

  1859. ask you

  1860. right here

  1861. is God

  1862. your heavenly

  1863. father

  1864. are you

  1865. sure

  1866. because you

  1867. see how he

  1868. has worked

  1869. in you

  1870. his spirits

  1871. in you

  1872. you're not

  1873. perfect

  1874. you're far

  1875. from it

  1876. but he

  1877. is working

  1878. in you

  1879. shaping

  1880. and molding

  1881. you

  1882. your character

  1883. helping you

  1884. to develop

  1885. that

  1886. Christ

  1887. like

  1888. character

  1889. love

  1890. not just

  1891. for people

  1892. like you

  1893. but love

  1894. for even

  1895. your enemies

  1896. you know

  1897. if there's

  1898. no signs

  1899. in your

  1900. life

  1901. and that

  1902. bothers

  1903. you

  1904. you think

  1905. to yourself

  1906. I don't

  1907. see any

  1908. evidence

  1909. but I

  1910. would like

  1911. to be

  1912. I want

  1913. to be

  1914. a child

  1915. of God

  1916. well admit

  1917. to God

  1918. that you're

  1919. not

  1920. if that's

  1921. the case

  1922. confess

  1923. your sin

  1924. change

  1925. your mind

  1926. about the

  1927. way you've

  1928. been living

  1929. repent

  1930. turn

  1931. from it

  1932. express

  1933. sorrow

  1934. to God

  1935. over the

  1936. way that

  1937. you have

  1938. sinned

  1939. and dishonored

  1940. him

  1941. put your

  1942. faith in

  1943. Jesus Christ

  1944. understand that

  1945. when he died

  1946. on the cross

  1947. he actually

  1948. took your

  1949. punishment

  1950. paid the

  1951. penalty for

  1952. your sins

  1953. call upon him

  1954. now

  1955. right now

  1956. this moment

  1957. to save

  1958. you

  1959. to be your

  1960. savior

  1961. your lord

  1962. surrender

  1963. your life

  1964. to him

  1965. now

  1966. he can

  1967. become

  1968. your heavenly

  1969. father

  1970. you can

  1971. be

  1972. a child

  1973. of God

  1974. as you

  1975. walk out

  1976. here today

  1977. if you

  1978. came in

  1979. not being

  1980. but the

  1981. final thought

  1982. is

  1983. as a

  1984. Christian

  1985. which most

  1986. people in

  1987. this room

  1988. were professing

  1989. Christians

  1990. there should

  1991. be evidence

  1992. in our

  1993. lives

  1994. there should

  1995. be fruit

  1996. I want to

  1997. ask you

  1998. in specifically

  1999. in relation

  2000. to this

  2001. message this

  2002. morning

  2003. do you

  2004. love those

  2005. that are

  2006. hard to

  2007. love

  2008. are you

  2009. asking God

  2010. to help

  2011. you

  2012. not just

  2013. to love

  2014. in general

  2015. but to

  2016. love

  2017. your

  2018. enemies

  2019. that's

  2020. what he's

  2021. called us

  2022. to do

  2023. let's pray

  2024. together

  2025. about it

  2026. father

  2027. show us

  2028. now how

  2029. we should

  2030. respond

  2031. so that

  2032. we can

  2033. leave here

  2034. being

  2035. and

  2036. demonstrating

  2037. that we

  2038. are your

  2039. children

  2040. and in

  2041. an attitude

  2042. of prayer

  2043. let's

  2044. all just

  2045. respond

  2046. to the

  2047. Lord

  2048. as we

  2049. need

  2050. to

  2051. I'll

  2052. be here

  2053. at the

  2054. front

  2055. and be

  2056. happy to

  2057. pray

  2058. with you

  2059. during this

  2060. time

  2061. but the

  2062. important

  2063. thing is you

  2064. listen to

  2065. the Lord

  2066. and obey

  2067. him

  2068. as he

  2069. speaks to

  2070. you
