  1. When you hear someone talk about a restoration project,

  2. what comes to your mind?

  3. Maybe trying to restore a house, an old house,

  4. or a classic car,

  5. or maybe just a piece of furniture,

  6. an antique piece of furniture.

  7. When you think about a restoration project,

  8. does trying to restore a fallen or broken person come to your mind?

  9. You know, when it comes to restoration projects,

  10. from God's perspective,

  11. He is concerned with restoring people,

  12. fallen and broken people,

  13. bringing them to Himself.

  14. We see a good example of that

  15. in the way that Jesus restored Peter

  16. in John's Gospel, the 21st chapter.

  17. If you would, go ahead and turn to John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  18. As you're turning,

  19. I want to remind most of you and tell some of you,

  20. Peter failed the Lord terribly

  21. as the leader of his disciples.

  22. After Jesus was arrested,

  23. before He was crucified,

  24. Peter actually denied that he even knew Jesus,

  25. not once,

  26. but three times.

  27. After His resurrection,

  28. Jesus reached out to Peter

  29. to restore Him,

  30. to bring Him back into a right relationship with Himself,

  31. and in the process,

  32. with the other disciples.

  33. We see how Jesus reached out

  34. to restore Jesus,

  35. or to restore Peter publicly,

  36. here in John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  37. beginning in verse 15.

  38. Now before we read what happened

  39. in this restoration,

  40. let's put it in context.

  41. Chapter 21 begins with

  42. seven of Jesus' disciples

  43. going fishing on the Sea of Galilee,

  44. and they fished all night

  45. and caught nothing.

  46. But then as day began to break,

  47. Jesus was on the shoreline,

  48. and He called out to them.

  49. They were close enough.

  50. He called out to them,

  51. cast your nets on the other side of the boat.

  52. That's where you're going to catch fish,

  53. and they did,

  54. and they caught 153.

  55. As this was taking place,

  56. they were hauling their nets in,

  57. they recognized who Jesus was.

  58. They recognized it was the resurrected Jesus

  59. calling them,

  60. and so they did all they could

  61. to get there as quickly as they could

  62. to be with Jesus.

  63. Well, when they got to Him,

  64. they found that He had prepared a breakfast for them.

  65. He had a charcoal fire burning

  66. with some fish already on it,

  67. told them to bring some of their fish,

  68. and they had a great time together.

  69. Jesus,

  70. seven of His disciples,

  71. around an open charcoal fire,

  72. eating breakfast,

  73. life was good.

  74. But then,

  75. Jesus looked at Peter

  76. and began

  77. the restoration process

  78. in front of the disciples.

  79. Let's read it in verse 15.

  80. John 21.

  81. When they had finished breakfast,

  82. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  83. Simon, son of John,

  84. do you love me more than these?

  85. He said to him,

  86. yes, Lord,

  87. you know that I love you.

  88. He said to him,

  89. feed my lambs.

  90. He said to him a second time,

  91. Simon, son of John,

  92. do you love me?

  93. He said, yes, Lord,

  94. you know that I love you.

  95. He said to him,

  96. tend my sheep.

  97. He said to him the third time,

  98. Simon,

  99. son of John,

  100. do you love me?

  101. Peter was grieved

  102. because he said to him the third time,

  103. do you love me?

  104. And he said to him,

  105. Lord,

  106. you know everything.

  107. You know that I love you.

  108. Jesus said to him,

  109. feed my sheep.

  110. We're going to begin this morning

  111. a message about restoration.

  112. We're going to come back next week

  113. and then a third week

  114. and see all the dynamics involved

  115. in Jesus reaching out to Peter,

  116. him coming back,

  117. him being recommissioned.

  118. And then the third week,

  119. we're going to learn something

  120. about minding our own business.

  121. But today,

  122. let's look at how the Lord

  123. graciously works

  124. to restore

  125. his fallen people

  126. to loving fellowship

  127. and then useful service.

  128. Our Lord is in the,

  129. first thing I want us to say,

  130. our Lord

  131. is in the restoration business.

  132. This is what we're going

  133. to focus on today.

  134. Our Lord,

  135. the Lord Jesus.

  136. He is in the life

  137. restoring business.

  138. Note that Jesus

  139. initiates

  140. this restoration session.

  141. They're on the shore together,

  142. having breakfast together,

  143. and all of a sudden,

  144. they've eaten,

  145. they're sort of relaxing probably.

  146. Jesus looks at Peter

  147. and says what we've just read.

  148. Peter

  149. had failed Jesus terribly

  150. and there was absolutely

  151. no excuse for it.

  152. You think about it.

  153. Peter has spent three years

  154. living with Jesus,

  155. listening to Him teach.

  156. Peter had had the advantage

  157. of being with Jesus,

  158. being taught one-on-one

  159. in their group

  160. of disciples,

  161. their twelve.

  162. Jesus had chosen him

  163. to be the leader of the band.

  164. Jesus had made Peter

  165. a part of His inner circle

  166. along with James and John.

  167. Peter had all kinds

  168. of advantages

  169. in his own personal relationship

  170. with Jesus,

  171. but it didn't do him any good.

  172. He still failed his Lord

  173. when his Lord needed him most.

  174. Peter failed Jesus,

  175. but Jesus was not going

  176. to fail Peter.

  177. Jesus was going

  178. to restore him,

  179. bring him back,

  180. because that's what Jesus does.

  181. That's how much the Lord

  182. loves and cares

  183. about His people.

  184. You know,

  185. once the Lord calls

  186. someone to Himself

  187. and does this work

  188. of regeneration

  189. to make us His child,

  190. puts His Spirit in us,

  191. He's never going

  192. to let us go.

  193. He's never going

  194. to let anything

  195. take us from Him,

  196. and Jesus emphasized

  197. this Himself

  198. on several occasions,

  199. but here's one good example

  200. in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  201. Look at it.

  202. Jesus is talking.

  203. All those the Father

  204. give me

  205. will come to me,

  206. and whoever comes to me,

  207. I will never drive away.

  208. For I have come down

  209. from heaven

  210. not to do my will,

  211. but to do the will

  212. of Him who sent me.

  213. And this is the will

  214. of Him who sent me,

  215. that I should lose none

  216. of all those

  217. He has given me,

  218. but raise them up

  219. at the last day.

  220. For my Father's will

  221. is that everyone

  222. who looks to the Son

  223. and believes in Him

  224. shall have eternal life,

  225. and I will raise them up

  226. at the last day.

  227. Paul describes this

  228. in terms of

  229. how nothing

  230. can ever separate us

  231. from the love of Christ

  232. in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  233. We're not going to look

  234. at it this morning,

  235. but I'd encourage you

  236. sometime.

  237. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  238. is one of the great

  239. chapters of the Bible,

  240. and toward the end,

  241. beginning in verse 31,

  242. Paul writes about

  243. how nothing under the sun

  244. can ever separate

  245. God's child from God.

  246. How nothing can ever

  247. separate us from the love

  248. of Jesus Christ.

  249. Nothing.

  250. It is emphasized.

  251. God loves His children

  252. enough that He's going

  253. to do whatever it takes

  254. to take care of us,

  255. to bring us back

  256. to Himself at some point

  257. if we ever walk away from Him.

  258. God loves us enough

  259. to discipline us.

  260. The book of Hebrews

  261. talks about this.

  262. One of the best examples

  263. is Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12:5

  264. verses 5 and 6.

  265. Look at what the writer

  266. says about God.

  267. My son, do not regard lightly

  268. the discipline of the Lord,

  269. nor be weary when reproved

  270. by Him,

  271. for the Lord disciplines

  272. the one He loves

  273. and chastises every son

  274. whom He receives.

  275. Here's the thought.

  276. As a child of God,

  277. He loves you so much,

  278. He's not going to let you

  279. ruin your life.

  280. He'll let you mess up

  281. a lot of things.

  282. But sooner or later,

  283. God is so going to work

  284. in the life of His child

  285. to humble you,

  286. to break you,

  287. to bring you to the point

  288. where you will willingly

  289. come back to Him

  290. just as we see

  291. in Peter's life.

  292. Jesus reached out to Peter

  293. in love,

  294. but Jesus didn't make it easy.

  295. This breakfast around

  296. the campfire,

  297. it was not something

  298. like a positive experience

  299. like you have

  300. at some of your camps.

  301. Everybody holding hands,

  302. smiling,

  303. and singing together.

  304. This was tense.

  305. This was a stressful scene.

  306. Here's some reasons

  307. why we should think that.

  308. The fire that Jesus made

  309. would have brought back

  310. terrible memories for Peter.

  311. Look back in verse 9

  312. here in John 21.

  313. It was a charcoal fire.

  314. That's the same kind of fire

  315. that Peter was warming himself by

  316. when he denied knowing Jesus.

  317. John brings that out.

  318. All the Gospel writers

  319. don't bring out charcoal fire,

  320. but John does.

  321. Look in chapter 18,

  322. verse 18.

  323. It says,

  324. Now the servants and officers

  325. had made a charcoal fire

  326. because it was cold,

  327. and they were standing

  328. and warming themselves.

  329. Peter also was with them,

  330. standing and warming himself.

  331. And that's the setting

  332. when Peter denied that he knew Jesus.

  333. Maybe Jesus was reminding Peter

  334. of how he tried to blend in with a crowd

  335. instead of standing out

  336. as a real disciple of Jesus.

  337. Maybe that's why

  338. Jesus made the charcoal fire,

  339. had Peter sitting around it

  340. with the other disciples

  341. to bring back the memories

  342. of the night

  343. when he denied his Lord.

  344. You know,

  345. this is something that

  346. we can identify with

  347. if we'll stop and think for a moment.

  348. I'm talking about failing the Lord.

  349. Aren't there times

  350. when you as a Christian,

  351. you're in some settings,

  352. and maybe there's a discussion

  353. about how God wants us

  354. to live in this world.

  355. Maybe there's a discussion

  356. about some issue,

  357. some matter,

  358. and the Bible's clear

  359. about how a Christian should live,

  360. and there's a discussion going on,

  361. but you purposefully remain quiet.

  362. You don't say a word

  363. because you don't want to call attention

  364. to the fact that you're a Christian.

  365. You don't want people

  366. to start talking about

  367. what the Bible actually teaches

  368. because you don't want

  369. to get their wrath.

  370. You don't want them

  371. to give you a hard time

  372. about that narrow-minded teaching

  373. that they know the Bible teaches.

  374. Sometimes we can get

  375. in situations as Christians.

  376. We don't do exactly like Peter did

  377. and deny Jesus.

  378. We just keep our mouth closed.

  379. We just make sure

  380. that we don't speak up

  381. and identify ourselves

  382. as belonging to Him,

  383. as trusting Him,

  384. as trusting God's Word.

  385. So sometimes,

  386. our just being quiet,

  387. our just sort of backing away

  388. can be just as much

  389. a denial of Jesus

  390. as what Peter did.

  391. Second thing that made this

  392. such a tense situation

  393. is the name by which

  394. Jesus addressed Peter

  395. would have troubled Peter.

  396. Look at it.

  397. In verse 15,

  398. and it's all three,

  399. 15, 16, and 17,

  400. all three verses,

  401. Jesus called him

  402. Simon, son of John.

  403. Nothing wrong with that

  404. except this.

  405. Simon was His given name.

  406. Calling him Simon, son of John

  407. was a formal way

  408. of addressing Peter.

  409. The problem is,

  410. that's not the name

  411. Jesus gave Peter.

  412. That's not the name

  413. Jesus usually used

  414. in talking to Peter.

  415. That word Peter,

  416. that name,

  417. that's what Jesus gave him.

  418. His name's Simon.

  419. Peter, though,

  420. we know him by that name.

  421. When Jesus called him

  422. to be His disciple,

  423. His follower,

  424. He gave him this nickname,

  425. Peter,

  426. which means rock.

  427. But in this setting,

  428. after Peter denies Jesus,

  429. Jesus deliberately calls him

  430. Simon three times.

  431. Jesus refuses to call him

  432. Peter three times.

  433. It seems obvious

  434. that Jesus was reminding Peter

  435. of His human weakness

  436. and His inability to be a rock

  437. on His own.

  438. Don't you understand

  439. human weakness?

  440. Don't we understand

  441. that very well?

  442. That's why we give in

  443. to temptation, isn't it?

  444. We do that.

  445. We're tempted.

  446. We know the right thing.

  447. We know what God

  448. wants us to do,

  449. but we just,

  450. we don't seek His help.

  451. We don't seek His way

  452. of escape.

  453. And so we just

  454. sort of do the best

  455. we can,

  456. we think,

  457. and in just trying

  458. to do our best

  459. without His help,

  460. we fail.

  461. Just like Peter,

  462. we find that trying

  463. to live a Christian life

  464. in our own strength,

  465. it just doesn't work

  466. because we are weak.

  467. When my boys were little,

  468. and my grandchildren now,

  469. especially my grandson,

  470. Will,

  471. I tease them about

  472. being weak

  473. and their inability

  474. to beat me

  475. in some of the things,

  476. some of the games

  477. we play.

  478. And I call them,

  479. I used to call my boys,

  480. I call Will sometimes

  481. things like rabbit

  482. or flea

  483. to tease him

  484. because he's weak,

  485. because he can't

  486. beat me.

  487. Now some of y'all

  488. wimpy thinking people,

  489. you're thinking,

  490. oh that's going to

  491. destroy his self-esteem.

  492. Wake up!

  493. Huh?

  494. That's right.

  495. You may be some kind

  496. of manby-pamby,

  497. but my boys

  498. and my grandchildren

  499. aren't.

  500. He can take it

  501. because he knows

  502. I'm playing

  503. and I do that

  504. because I know

  505. the days are numbered

  506. when I'll be able

  507. to ever beat him again.

  508. Just like I can't

  509. even remember a time

  510. when I could beat

  511. my own boys

  512. at anything.

  513. Well when it comes

  514. to living a faithful

  515. Christian life,

  516. if we don't seek

  517. the Lord's help

  518. and strength,

  519. we'll find out

  520. that we are weak

  521. like rabbits

  522. and flees,

  523. we will fail

  524. from our own

  525. human weakness

  526. just like Peter.

  527. Let's look at

  528. one other thing

  529. why this was

  530. a stressful,

  531. tenseful situation.

  532. The presence

  533. of the other disciples.

  534. All this takes place,

  535. there's Jesus and Peter

  536. and there's six

  537. other guys,

  538. six other disciples,

  539. six that Peter

  540. has previously led

  541. and so Jesus

  542. asked him

  543. in front of them,

  544. do you love me

  545. more than these?

  546. Now imagine that.

  547. Here's Peter,

  548. he's already feeling

  549. very uncomfortable,

  550. he has failed Jesus

  551. in front of everybody,

  552. everybody knows it

  553. and all of a sudden

  554. Jesus looks at him

  555. in front of these

  556. other guys,

  557. do you love me

  558. more than these

  559. other guys do?

  560. Why in the world

  561. you think,

  562. would Jesus

  563. say something

  564. like that?

  565. Well not too many

  566. days earlier,

  567. Peter didn't have

  568. a problem

  569. lifting himself

  570. up

  571. as being superior

  572. to his peers.

  573. Jesus

  574. had told Peter,

  575. warned him,

  576. you're going to fail,

  577. you're going to fall,

  578. you're going to deny me.

  579. Peter wouldn't have it,

  580. wouldn't believe Jesus.

  581. Here's what Peter said,

  582. look at it,

  583. it's in Matthew chapter 26,

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  584. after Jesus had warned him,

  585. Peter answered,

  586. though they all fall away

  587. because of you,

  588. I will never fall away.

  589. Peter had said that

  590. in front of the other guys.

  591. So now,

  592. this confrontation,

  593. this restoration,

  594. it's got to take place

  595. in front of these

  596. other guys.

  597. But let's be honest,

  598. no one wants to be

  599. called out for their sin,

  600. for their failures

  601. in front of other people.

  602. But when it happens

  603. before others

  604. or against others,

  605. restoration has to

  606. include other people.

  607. Listen,

  608. when we just

  609. blow it

  610. before God,

  611. we can confess

  612. our sin to God,

  613. the restoration

  614. can be just

  615. between Him and us.

  616. But when we sin

  617. against somebody else,

  618. we sin in a way

  619. that's made known,

  620. people know about it,

  621. the restoration

  622. will have to include

  623. those people.

  624. When you've wronged

  625. somebody else

  626. in order to really

  627. be right with God,

  628. you seek His forgiveness

  629. and also,

  630. you go to the person

  631. you've wronged

  632. and you say to them,

  633. I'm sorry.

  634. You ask them

  635. to forgive you.

  636. That is a part

  637. of restoration

  638. when other people

  639. are involved

  640. and Jesus

  641. made Peter

  642. answer His question

  643. in front of these

  644. other guys.

  645. This is an important

  646. reminder that God

  647. takes our sin

  648. seriously.

  649. And if we are

  650. serious about

  651. wanting to be

  652. forgiven,

  653. wanting to be

  654. brought back

  655. in a close

  656. relationship with God,

  657. we've got to learn

  658. to take sin

  659. seriously too.

  660. Peter did.

  661. Here's something

  662. I want us to know,

  663. a new thought here.

  664. Peter actually did

  665. understand all this.

  666. He did have some time

  667. with Jesus

  668. before this encounter

  669. on the seashore

  670. by the fire.

  671. Remember,

  672. after Jesus

  673. was arrested,

  674. he was first

  675. taken to the home

  676. of the high priest

  677. to be questioned.

  678. Well,

  679. the Scripture says

  680. that Peter

  681. followed from a distance

  682. and was just

  683. outside the house

  684. where Jesus

  685. was

  686. when he denied

  687. knowing Jesus

  688. for the third time.

  689. Luke

  690. records what

  691. happened like this.

  692. It's in Luke

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  693. chapter 22.

  694. Notice this.

  695. Peter said,

  696. Man,

  697. I do not know

  698. what you're talking

  699. about.

  700. And immediately,

  701. while he was still

  702. speaking,

  703. the rooster

  704. crowed

  705. and the Lord

  706. turned

  707. and looked

  708. at Peter.

  709. You think about that.

  710. Here Peter is.

  711. Jesus is somewhere

  712. over here

  713. being questioned.

  714. He's arrested.

  715. He's being questioned.

  716. It looks bad.

  717. Peter is over here

  718. warming himself

  719. by the fire

  720. trying to be

  721. incognito,

  722. not be,

  723. wants no one

  724. to notice.

  725. But people notice.

  726. They notice his accent.

  727. They notice

  728. he is one of them.

  729. And they question Jesus.

  730. Not once,

  731. not twice,

  732. but three times.

  733. And all three times

  734. Jesus or Peter

  735. denies.

  736. I don't even know

  737. the man.

  738. Now just think.

  739. Peter's here.

  740. He's mad.

  741. He's afraid.

  742. He's telling people,

  743. I don't know the man.

  744. As he's speaking,

  745. the rooster crows

  746. and as he glances

  747. this way,

  748. his eyes meet

  749. Jesus' eyes.

  750. He's crushed.

  751. Think of the,

  752. think of the shame,

  753. the humiliation.

  754. He has betrayed

  755. Jesus

  756. and Jesus

  757. heard him.

  758. Jesus saw him.

  759. His eyes

  760. were on him.

  761. Peter was broken.

  762. And Luke goes on

  763. to tell us that

  764. in verse,

  765. same chapter,

  766. verse 61.

  767. And Peter remembered

  768. the saying of the Lord

  769. how he had said to him

  770. before the rooster crows today,

  771. you will deny me

  772. three times.

  773. And he went out

  774. and he wept

  775. bitterly.

  776. Peter was broken,

  777. humbled.

  778. He repented of his sin.

  779. Now,

  780. just because he went out

  781. and wept bitterly

  782. doesn't mean

  783. he was repentant.

  784. He could have just had

  785. an emotional breakdown

  786. because he betrayed

  787. his friend

  788. and when he got over it

  789. just went all about his way.

  790. But that's not what happened.

  791. Peter went out

  792. and wept bitterly

  793. because he truly was

  794. broken and repentant.

  795. And after the resurrection,

  796. Jesus appeared to Peter

  797. on several occasions

  798. and at least one time

  799. there's a special meeting

  800. between Jesus

  801. and Peter.

  802. Luke tells us about it

  803. in Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  804. Look at it.

  805. Two of the disciples

  806. made this statement.

  807. The Lord has risen indeed

  808. and has appeared

  809. to Simon.

  810. Paul says that Peter,

  811. that Jesus appeared

  812. to Peter specifically

  813. in 1 Corinthians chapter 15

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  814. about verse 4 or 6.

  815. What we see here

  816. in John 21

  817. is more like

  818. Peter's public restoration.

  819. Not only to a loving

  820. relationship with Jesus,

  821. a renewed relationship

  822. with Jesus,

  823. but Peter is being restored

  824. to a place

  825. of leadership

  826. among those disciples

  827. again.

  828. Now,

  829. as stressful

  830. and as painful

  831. as this experience was,

  832. we need to note

  833. that Peter,

  834. he didn't hold back

  835. in this situation.

  836. Peter was a willing

  837. participant

  838. and he shows

  839. that he had already

  840. had an encounter

  841. with Jesus

  842. that changed him

  843. by the way he responded.

  844. Look,

  845. Peter did not hesitate

  846. to profess

  847. that his love

  848. for Jesus

  849. was greater

  850. than the other disciples.

  851. Look at it,

  852. verse 15.

  853. When they had finished

  854. breakfast,

  855. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  856. Simon,

  857. son of John,

  858. do you love me

  859. more than these?

  860. That's hard

  861. in front of these guys.

  862. He said to him,

  863. yes, Lord,

  864. you know

  865. that I love you.

  866. That had to be hard.

  867. Peter had failed Jesus.

  868. He had failed

  869. his friends.

  870. He was a pitiful leader

  871. in their eyes

  872. at this point.

  873. But one of the goals

  874. that Jesus had

  875. for this breakfast

  876. was to restore Peter

  877. to a right relationship

  878. with his fellow disciples

  879. and to this place

  880. of leadership

  881. among the disciples,

  882. which we know

  883. later on

  884. as we read

  885. in the book of Acts,

  886. he did take the lead again.

  887. Even though it would have been

  888. uncomfortable for Peter,

  889. he swallowed his pride

  890. and he cooperated

  891. with Jesus

  892. in this public

  893. restoration process.

  894. Here's what we need

  895. to think.

  896. When the Lord

  897. is working in our lives

  898. to restore us,

  899. we must make sure

  900. that we don't allow

  901. pride to be

  902. a stumbling block

  903. to our being

  904. fully restored.

  905. Lord,

  906. sometimes God

  907. may convict you

  908. to make some changes

  909. in your life

  910. and in making those changes

  911. you've got to talk

  912. to some people.

  913. You've got to admit

  914. some past sin,

  915. some past problems.

  916. You've got to seek

  917. to be reconciled,

  918. to be right with them.

  919. Or you've got to make

  920. some major changes

  921. that you've got to explain

  922. to somebody

  923. why you're making the change.

  924. And your pride is such,

  925. I don't want to talk about it,

  926. this is personal,

  927. this is private,

  928. it's none of their business.

  929. Well, it is

  930. if it previously

  931. involved them.

  932. It is if that's what

  933. the Lord's prompting

  934. you to do.

  935. And Peter did it.

  936. He swallowed his pride

  937. and he spoke up

  938. and listened to,

  939. did what Jesus said

  940. in front of these

  941. other guys.

  942. Peter also demonstrated

  943. his changed life

  944. by the way he

  945. humbly responds

  946. to Jesus'

  947. repeated question.

  948. Look at it.

  949. Verses 15, 16, and 17.

  950. Three times

  951. Jesus asked Peter

  952. the same thing,

  953. basically.

  954. Do you love me?

  955. And three times

  956. Peter responded

  957. the same way.

  958. Look at it.

  959. Verse 15.

  960. Yes, Lord,

  961. you know that I love you.

  962. Verse 16.

  963. Exactly the same.

  964. Yes, Lord,

  965. you know that I love you.

  966. Verse 17.

  967. Lord, you know everything.

  968. You know that I love you.

  969. Peter's showing

  970. a lot of humility here.

  971. Peter does not boast

  972. of his love for Jesus.

  973. Peter does not even

  974. respond to Jesus

  975. with a simple,

  976. yes, I love you.

  977. Peter appeals

  978. to the all-knowing mind

  979. of Jesus.

  980. Peter doesn't have this

  981. boastful confidence

  982. in himself anymore.

  983. So he looks at Jesus

  984. and he says,

  985. you know

  986. that I love you.

  987. And Peter is emphasizing

  988. the you part,

  989. you, Jesus, know.

  990. See, Peter's actions

  991. lately had not revealed

  992. any love.

  993. So he can't point to that.

  994. So Peter,

  995. listen to this.

  996. You think about this

  997. personally.

  998. Peter actually says

  999. to Jesus,

  1000. you know my heart.

  1001. So you know

  1002. that I love you.

  1003. How comfortable

  1004. would you be

  1005. to answer that question

  1006. as Peter did?

  1007. If the Lord

  1008. just asked you

  1009. right now,

  1010. do you love me?

  1011. Would you feel

  1012. comfortable,

  1013. confident

  1014. to say to Jesus,

  1015. Lord,

  1016. you know

  1017. that I do.

1018. You know what's in me.

1019. You know how I think

  1020. and feel.

  1021. You know

  1022. that I love you.

  1023. Truth is,

  1024. the Lord does know

  1025. everything about us.

  1026. He knows right now

1027. if we truly love him,

1028. how much we love him.

1029. He knows if we love him

  1030. more than anything

  1031. or anyone.

  1032. Here's something

  1033. we cannot forget.

1034. If we don't love Jesus

  1035. more than everyone

  1036. and everything

  1037. in our lives,

  1038. we have a problem.

  1039. It's a sin problem.

  1040. You see,

  1041. there's one thing

  1042. Jesus made clear

  1043. throughout his ministry.

1044. I've got to be first.

1045. You've got to love me

  1046. more than your parents,

  1047. your children,

  1048. your spouse,

  1049. even your own life,

  1050. Jesus said.

  1051. And Jesus even said,

  1052. if you don't,

1053. you cannot be my disciple.

1054. Look it up in Luke chapter 14,

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  1055. beginning about verse 25,

1056. if you have any doubts.

  1057. Our love for Christ

  1058. must be first.

  1059. It must be supreme.

  1060. Or there's something wrong.

  1061. Right now,

  1062. let me ask you,

  1063. is there something

1064. that you love more than him?

  1065. If there is,

  1066. just be honest

  1067. and admit it.

1068. But admit to the Lord

  1069. that's not right.

  1070. That it's sin.

  1071. That you know

1072. it's not pleasing to him.

  1073. And ask him

  1074. to change your heart.

1075. Ask him to so work in you

  1076. that you want

  1077. to love him

  1078. more than anyone

  1079. or anything.

1080. I want us to be honest

1081. as we wind this up.

  1082. If Peter could experience

  1083. spiritual and moral failure,

  1084. so can we.

1085. Peter had a lot more advantages

  1086. than we do.

  1087. He was actually

  1088. with the Lord.

  1089. Peter saw more,

  1090. heard more.

  1091. But he failed.

1092. But the good news is

  1093. just as the Lord

  1094. restored Peter,

1095. the Lord will restore us.

  1096. God does not,

  1097. never gives up

  1098. on his broken

  1099. and fallen people.

  1100. God will work

1101. in all kinds of ways

  1102. to bring us

  1103. to a point

  1104. of humbling ourselves,

  1105. confessing our sin,

1106. and coming back to him

  1107. in a renewed faith,

  1108. renewed commitment.

  1109. If you are away

  1110. from the Lord

  1111. right now,

1112. I want you to know

  1113. he wants you

  1114. to come back.

  1115. If you are

  1116. a child of God

  1117. and there's something

  1118. in your life

  1119. that you know

1120. it's not pleasing to him,

  1121. maybe there's something

  1122. you've been dealing with

  1123. for a long time

1124. and you just sort of

1125. try and put it to the side.

  1126. It could be

  1127. that the thing

  1128. that's bothering you

  1129. is so much

  1130. bothering you

  1131. that you can't sleep.

  1132. It may be

  1133. it's so bothering you

  1134. that you're

  1135. you're just so

  1136. eaten up with guilt

  1137. you're mean as a snake

  1138. to everybody around you.

  1139. If you're a Christian,

  1140. if you are truly

  1141. a child of God

1142. and dwell by the Spirit

  1143. of God

  1144. and you're separated

  1145. from God,

  1146. you will never

  1147. rest easy.

  1148. you will never

  1149. know real peace

  1150. and contentment

  1151. in your life

  1152. until you come back

  1153. to him.

  1154. God wants you

  1155. to come back.

  1156. God's making your life

  1157. miserable to the point

  1158. it's like discipline

  1159. to bring you back.

1160. My question to you is

  1161. will you come back?

1162. And you can come back

  1163. right now.

  1164. Just admit to God

  1165. whatever it is

1166. he's dealing with you about.

  1167. Confess your sin.

  1168. Grieve over it.

  1169. Turn from it.

  1170. Say yes

  1171. to whatever

  1172. he's telling you

  1173. to say yes to.

  1174. Make a new commitment

  1175. of your life

  1176. to Jesus Christ

  1177. as your Savior,

  1178. your Lord.

  1179. You're trusting him

1180. that he paid the penalty

  1181. for your sins.

  1182. You're trusting him

  1183. that his perfect

  1184. righteous life

  1185. has been credited

  1186. to you

  1187. because you're

  1188. trusting in him.

  1189. Come back

  1190. to a right relationship

  1191. with God

  1192. based on your

  1193. relationship with Jesus.

  1194. Your renewed

  1195. commitment to Jesus

  1196. as the Lord

  1197. of your life.

  1198. If you're not

  1199. a Christian

  1200. admit that

  1201. to God

  1202. that right now

  1203. you don't have

  1204. a relationship

  1205. with him

1206. but if you want one

  1207. turn from your sin

  1208. put your trust

  1209. in Jesus.

  1210. Have confidence

  1211. when he died

  1212. on the cross

  1213. he took your place

  1214. paying the penalty

  1215. for your sin

  1216. so call upon him

  1217. to save you now.

  1218. Our Lord

  1219. loves

  1220. to restore people.

  1221. If you are broken

  1222. fallen

  1223. or away from him

  1224. for any reason

  1225. he would love

  1226. to restore you

  1227. now

  1228. if you will come

  1229. to him.

  1230. Let's pray together.

  1231. Dear God

  1232. show us

  1233. what we need

  1234. to do

  1235. personally

  1236. right now.

  1237. Help us

  1238. to do that.

  1239. and in an attitude

  1240. of prayer

  1241. you listen

  1242. to the Lord

  1243. and you just

  1244. obey him

  1245. do whatever

  1246. he's telling you

  1247. to do.

  1248. I would be happy

  1249. to pray with you

  1250. here in front

1251. in the next few minutes.

  1252. Let's listen

  1253. to the Lord

  1254. and do what

  1255. he's telling us

  1256. to do

  1257. right now.

  1258. good

  1259. and
