  1. In this room, you like to do projects.

  2. Sometimes it's a restoration project.

  3. Why do you do it?

  4. Why do you go to all that trouble?

  5. I talked to someone last week who was involved in restoring a house

  6. because they want to live in it.

  7. It's an old house, it's got a lot of character, they said,

  8. and they're working hard to restore it to live in it.

  9. Some of you may have restored a car, an old car, a classic maybe.

  10. Because you want to drive it.

  11. Maybe you want to take it to a car show.

  12. People who go to the trouble of that kind of work, restoring things.

  13. They do it for a reason.

  14. They have a purpose for that work.

  15. You know, God is the same way.

  16. God is in the business of restoring fallen and broken people

  17. because He's not finished with them.

  18. I want you to think about it.

  19. When God makes a person His,

  20. when God works to call a person to Himself

  21. by trusting in Jesus as their Savior and Lord,

  22. He makes them His son or daughter.

  23. God will never wash His hands of them.

  24. No matter what,

  25. God will love,

  26. He will care,

  27. He will intervene.

  28. Sometimes He will make His child's life miserable

  29. to get their attention,

  30. to wake them up,

  31. to bring them back to Himself.

  32. But God never gives up.

  33. Our God is in the restoring life,

  34. restoring business.

  35. And every person He restores,

  36. He has a purpose for.

  37. He has something,

  38. when we fail Him and come back to Him,

  39. He has something for us to do.

  40. He wants us to serve Him.

  41. But what I want us to really think about this morning,

  42. He wants us to serve Him from a heart of love.

  43. Now we saw last week how God rescues people.

  44. For example, in John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  45. when Jesus restored Peter.

  46. Now I want you to turn back with me.

  47. John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  48. beginning in verse 15.

  49. This is part two of a three-part series

  50. on a restoration story.

  51. All coming from John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  52. Let's read.

  53. When they had finished breakfast,

  54. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  55. Simon, son of John,

  56. do you love me more than these?

  57. Remember from last week,

  58. this is a breakfast around an open fire

  59. with seven disciples,

  60. six Peter and six more.

  61. And so He says,

  62. do you love me more than these guys?

  63. He said to him,

  64. that is Peter,

  65. yes, Lord,

  66. you know that I love you.

  67. He said to him,

  68. feed my lambs.

  69. He said to him a second time,

  70. Simon, son of John,

  71. do you love me?

  72. Peter said to him,

  73. yes, Lord,

  74. you know that I love you.

  75. He said to him,

  76. tend my sheep.

  77. feed my sheep.

  78. He said to him the third time,

  79. Simon, son of John,

  80. do you love me?

  81. Peter was grieved

  82. because he said to him

  83. the third time,

  84. do you love me?

  85. And he said to him,

  86. Lord,

  87. you know everything.

  88. You know

  89. that I love you.

  90. And Jesus said to him,

  91. feed my sheep.

  92. Truly,

  93. truly,

  94. I say to you,

  95. when you were young,

  96. you used to dress yourself

  97. and walk wherever you wanted.

  98. But when you were old,

  99. you will stretch out your hands

  100. and another will dress you

  101. and carry you

  102. where you do not want to go.

  103. This he said to show

  104. by what kind of death

  105. he,

  106. that is Peter,

  107. was going to glorify God.

  108. And after saying this,

  109. he said to him,

  110. follow me.

  111. And we're really going to get into that

  112. verse 18 and 19 next week.

  113. What I want us to see first,

  114. sort of a quick review

  115. from last week.

  116. Our Lord is in the restoration business.

  117. Jesus took the initiative

  118. to reach out to Peter.

  119. Peter had failed Jesus

  120. the night that he was arrested

  121. by denying that he even knew him.

  122. He did it not once,

  123. not twice,

  124. but three times.

  125. Well,

  126. you can imagine how Peter felt

  127. when he realized what he'd done.

  128. But Jesus right here,

  129. he reaches out to Peter

  130. to publicly let the other disciples know

  131. it's all right now.

  132. Peter,

  133. he denied me three times.

  134. I'm making him say three times

  135. that he loves me.

  136. To let the others know

  137. Peter's forgiven.

  138. He's been restored now

  139. to fellowship with Jesus.

  140. He's now trustworthy again.

  141. And this is Jesus' way

  142. of restoring him

  143. to be the leader of disciples.

  144. Now, he is a leader among equals.

  145. Peter is not special.

  146. He's not unique among the 12

  147. in terms of giving any kind

  148. of special authority or power.

  149. He is simply the leader

  150. among equals in this group.

  151. This is just one example

  152. of how God never gives up

  153. on his fallen or broken children.

  154. A lot of you,

  155. you've read through the Bible,

  156. you've read a lot of the Bible,

  157. you know that throughout the Bible,

  158. there are story after story

  159. of people who sinned against God,

  160. who failed him miserably,

  161. but God brought them back.

  162. I've been teaching a study

  163. of chapter 11 of the book of Hebrews

  164. on Wednesday nights

  165. called Models of Faith.

  166. Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  167. it's a long list

  168. of men and women

  169. from the Old Testament

  170. who are being held up

  171. as real examples

  172. of people who trusted God

  173. and just lived faithful lives

  174. serving God.

  175. But you know,

  176. every single one of those people,

  177. every single one

  178. in that long list

  179. of Hebrews 11,

  180. they also failed God.

  181. If you go back

  182. and read about every one of them,

  183. some of them are more

  184. well known and remembered

  185. because of their sin,

  186. because of their failure,

  187. not because of their faithfulness,

  188. but in the big scheme of things,

  189. they're being held up as examples.

  190. Fallen, broken, imperfect people

  191. that God didn't give up on,

  192. but worked in their lives

  193. to bring them back

  194. after they had fallen.

  195. And they've become examples

  196. of faithfulness.

  197. That encourages me.

  198. It should encourage each one of us

  199. because we do fail the Lord

  200. in a lot of ways, don't we?

  201. And if you don't really understand

  202. how you fail God

  203. more often than

  204. you really feel comfortable

  205. talking about,

  206. if you don't find that

  207. and ring a bell with you,

  208. something's wrong.

  209. It could be that you don't have

  210. a high enough view of God

  211. and His holiness

  212. and His perfection,

  213. His majesty.

  214. Maybe you've got too high

  215. of an opinion of yourself.

  216. You don't really understand

  217. how you don't love Him

  218. with all your heart,

  219. soul, mind, and strength,

  220. which is how we're supposed

  221. to love Him.

  222. And so,

  223. most of us in this room,

  224. I think,

  225. we don't have a problem

  226. understanding.

  227. I fail the Lord a lot.

  228. I don't live up to

  229. what I know.

  230. I don't always put into practice

  231. what I truly believe.

  232. And so,

  233. to hear all these stories,

  234. to read all these stories

  235. about how God doesn't give up on us,

  236. how He doesn't throw us away,

  237. how He works to bring us

  238. back to Himself

  239. and restore us,

  240. that should be encouraging

  241. to us.

  242. You know,

  243. back in that Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  244. King David,

  245. he is probably the most well-known

  246. of those who were restored

  247. from failure.

  248. David failed God terribly

  249. when he committed adultery

  250. with Bathsheba,

  251. then tried to cover it up

  252. by having her husband killed.

  253. What made David's moral

  254. and spiritual failure so bad

  255. is that he knew better.

  256. He knew he was wrong.

  257. That was wrong

  258. from the very beginning.

  259. You know,

  260. that's just sort of a

  261. reminder.

  262. Most of the time,

  263. just about all the times,

  264. our problems are not

  265. that we don't know.

  266. Isn't that right?

  267. Our problem is not

  268. that we don't know

  269. what we ought to do

  270. or what we ought not to do.

  271. We know.

  272. Our problem is

  273. doing what we know.

  274. And that was David's problem.

  275. I want you to notice

  276. Paul,

  277. the Apostle Paul,

  278. he quotes a passage

  279. of Scripture

  280. in the Old Testament

  281. to describe David

  282. as a man

  283. after God's heart.

  284. Look at it on the screen.

  285. It's in Acts chapter 13

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  286. and he is quoting

  287. from the Old Testament.

  288. 1 Samuel chapter 13.

    1 Samuel 13 chapter mention

  289. Look at it.

  290. God raised David up

  291. to be their king

  292. of whom he testified

  293. and said,

  294. I have found in David

  295. the son of Jesse

  296. a man after my own heart

  297. who will do all my will.

  298. David was truly

  299. a man of God.

  300. But that didn't prevent him

  301. from failure.

  302. That didn't make him

  303. immune from temptation.

  304. David was tempted

  305. this man after God's heart.

  306. He was tempted

  307. to give in to sexual immorality

  308. and he did.

  309. He was tempted

  310. to try to cover up

  311. his sin

  312. by killing someone

  313. and he did.

  314. David failed God

  315. in a very public

  316. and shameful way

  317. and he knew better.

  318. But God didn't give up on him.

  319. God actually worked

  320. in his life.

  321. It took some time.

  322. But God actually worked

  323. in David's life

  324. to bring him

  325. to a point

  326. where

  327. he realized

  328. just how

  329. terrible

  330. his sin was.

  331. And he was humbled.

  332. He was broken.

  333. And he truly

  334. repented of that sin

  335. and turned from it

  336. and changed his mind

  337. about it.

  338. You can read about that

  339. in 2 Samuel chapter 11 and 12.

    2 Samuel 11 chapter mention

  340. David humbly

  341. and sincerely

  342. confessed his sin

  343. to God

  344. sought God's forgiveness

  345. he sought to be restored.

  346. And he wrote about that

  347. in Psalm 51.

  348. Here's what

  349. some people may need

  350. to hear right now.

  351. God will

  352. God desires

  353. to restore us

  354. when we fail him

  355. if we will humbly

  356. confess our sins

  357. and come back to him

  358. with a renewed

  359. commitment

  360. renewed faith

  361. and trust

  362. and confidence

  363. in him.

  364. But let's move on

  365. in Peter's story

  366. and see what follows

  367. the restoration.

  368. Number two

  369. our Lord's restoration

  370. is both relational

  371. and practical.

  372. What happened

  373. around that breakfast

  374. campfire

  375. is intended

  376. to show us

  377. that first

  378. first

  379. Peter was restored

  380. to a loving

  381. relationship

  382. with Jesus

  383. and then secondly

  384. he was

  385. recommissioned

  386. to serve

  387. the Lord.

  388. You think about

  389. what you're seeing

  390. there

  391. is what we've read.

  392. Love is the one

  393. thing that Jesus

  394. questioned Peter

  395. about

  396. before he

  397. commissioned him

  398. to serve him

  399. again.

  400. Jesus

  401. kept at Peter

  402. emphasizing

  403. the relational

  404. nature

  405. of what

  406. needed to happen.

  407. Peter

  408. do you love me?

  409. Do you love me?

  410. Do you love me?

  411. It's only when he

  412. responds yes

  413. that he says

  414. then feed my sheep

  415. take care of these

  416. I'm giving to you.

  417. Restoring Peter

  418. to a loving

  419. relationship

  420. with himself

  421. was Jesus'

  422. first priority.

  423. Love is the

  424. indispensable

  425. quality

  426. of our Christian

  427. faith.

  428. Look with me.

  429. Our relationship

  430. with the Lord

  431. is built

  432. on the foundation

  433. of love.

  434. I want you to

  435. understand

  436. our relationship

  437. with the Lord

  438. is built

  439. on the foundation

  440. of love.

  441. I think

  442. sometimes

  443. we put too

  444. much emphasis

  445. on serving

  446. God

  447. and not enough

  448. emphasis on

  449. loving God.

  450. You think

  451. with me.

  452. there's a lot

  453. of people

  454. in our church

  455. who are involved

  456. in some area

  457. of ministry

  458. doing certain

  459. things

  460. a variety

  461. of things

  462. in our

  463. service to God

  464. and that's good

  465. we should

  466. but think

  467. with me.

  468. Can't you

  469. teach a lesson

  470. sing a song

  471. complete a

  472. project

  473. meet

  474. someone's

  475. need

  476. and not

  477. think so

  478. much about

  479. why we're

  480. doing it

  481. and maybe

  482. not even

  483. think so much

  484. about we're

  485. doing it

  486. because we

  487. love the

  488. Lord and

  489. we're seeking

  490. to honor Him

  491. with our

  492. service.

  493. Let's be

  494. real honest

  495. now.

  496. Standing up

  497. here and

  498. preaching a

  499. sermon

  500. that can be

  501. an ego

  502. trip.

  503. you standing

  504. up in front

  505. of a Sunday

  506. school class

  507. teaching or

  508. standing up

  509. here singing

  510. a song

  511. that can go

  512. to your head.

  513. It can be

  514. your stage

  515. your opportunity

  516. to perform.

  517. now I

  518. figured out

  519. this weekend

  520. that my

  521. granddaughter

  522. is the

  523. smartest

  524. stone

  525. of all

  526. because

  527. she told

  528. me

  529. Friday

  530. when I

  531. was singing

  532. one of my

  533. songs

  534. she said

  535. you ought

  536. to be on

  537. the stage

  538. didn't she

  539. listen

  540. smartest

  541. stone

  542. best ear

  543. of all

  544. but here's

  545. the thing

  546. we can

  547. serve God

  548. in visible

  549. ways

  550. meaningful

  551. ways

  552. helpful

  553. ways

  554. but God's

  555. not really a

  556. part of what

  557. we are doing

  558. as we do

  559. it.

  560. It's all

  561. about us

  562. or all

  563. about

  564. something

  565. else

  566. besides

  567. Him.

  568. We need

  569. to understand

  570. that before

  571. we preach

  572. or teach

  573. or sing

  574. or do a

  575. project

  576. or meet

  577. a need

  578. our motivation

  579. needs to be

  580. right

  581. in order for

  582. it to really

  583. count in

  584. terms of

  585. honoring God

  586. and serving

  587. His purpose.

  588. Kent Hughes

  589. points out in his

  590. book on John

  591. commenting on

  592. this section

  593. of Scripture

  594. by quoting

  595. Roy Hessian

  596. about what

  597. I'm talking

  598. about.

  599. I want you

  600. to look with

  601. me at what

  602. he says.

  603. He says

  604. to concentrate

  605. on service

  606. and activity

  607. for God

  608. may often

  609. actively

  610. thwart

  611. our attaining

  612. of the true

  613. goal

  614. God Himself.

  615. At first sight

  616. it seems heroic

  617. to fling

  618. ourselves away

  619. in the service

  620. of God

  621. and of our

  622. fellows.

  623. We feel

  624. it is bound

  625. to mean

  626. more to

  627. Him

  628. than our

  629. experience

  630. of Him.

  631. Service

  632. seems so

  633. unselfish

  634. whereas

  635. concentrating

  636. on our

  637. walk with

  638. God

  639. seems selfish

  640. and self-centered

  641. but it is

  642. really the

  643. very reverse.

  644. The things

  645. that God

  646. is most

  647. concerned about

  648. are our

  649. coldness

  650. of heart

  651. towards

  652. Himself

  653. and our

  654. proud

  655. unbroken

  656. natures.

  657. Christian service

  658. of itself

  659. can

  660. and so

  661. often

  662. does

  663. leave

  664. our

  665. self-centered

  666. nature

  667. untouched.

  668. That's what

  669. I was talking

  670. about.

  671. We can do

  672. what we do

  673. and it's all

  674. about

  675. me

  676. and there's

  677. no love

  678. for somebody

  679. else.

  680. We can

  681. still be

  682. jealous

  683. and envious.

  684. We can

  685. still be

  686. proud.

  687. We can

  688. still be

  689. just

  690. unconcerned

  691. about those

  692. we are

  693. up before

  694. trying to

  695. serve

  696. and not

  697. even think

  698. even about

  699. what we're

  700. doing.

  701. It's supposed

  702. to be

  703. for the

  704. Lord.

  705. God is

  706. most

  707. concerned

  708. that we

  709. know

  710. Him

  711. and love

  712. Him

  713. and He

  714. wants us

  715. to do

  716. what we

  717. do from

  718. a relationship

  719. of love

  720. for Him.

  721. You know,

  722. this is really

  723. taught and

  724. illustrated

  725. throughout the

  726. Bible.

  727. The Bible

  728. is not

  729. just a

  730. rule book.

  731. Some people

  732. think that it

  733. is.

  734. It's not.

  735. The Bible

  736. in telling

  737. us how

  738. God wants

  739. us to

  740. live

  741. tells us

  742. before anything

  743. else

  744. how God

  745. wants us

  746. to relate

  747. to Him

  748. in a

  749. relationship

  750. of love.

  751. One of

  752. the earliest

  753. confessions

  754. of the

  755. Jewish people

  756. is found

  757. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6:4

  758. chapter 6

  759. verses 4

  760. and 5.

  761. Some of

  762. you know

  763. it's called

  764. the Shema.

  765. It's

  766. something that

  767. good Jews

  768. in Jesus'

  769. day

  770. repeated

  771. twice a

  772. day.

  773. They

  774. memorized it.

  775. But it

  776. was something

  777. they were

  778. supposed to

  779. to hear,

  780. to believe,

  781. to memorize,

  782. and to

  783. take with

  784. them as

  785. they went

  786. into the

  787. promised

  788. land to

  789. guide them

  790. how to

  791. be God's

  792. people.

  793. Look at

  794. it.

  795. Hear, O

  796. Israel,

  797. the Lord

  798. our God,

  799. the Lord

  800. is one.

  801. You shall

  802. love the

  803. Lord your

  804. God with

  805. all your

  806. heart,

  807. with all

  808. your soul,

  809. with all

  810. your might.

  811. The focus

  812. is God's

  813. people.

  814. Focus on

  815. loving Him,

  816. our one

  817. and only

  818. God.

  819. Well,

  820. Jesus

  821. stressed this

  822. priority

  823. this

  824. priority

  825. of loving

  826. God by

  827. declaring it

  828. to be the

  829. greatest

  830. commandment.

  831. For an

  832. example,

  833. in Matthew

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  834. chapter 22,

  835. a teacher

  836. or somebody

  837. came up to

  838. Jesus and

  839. addressed Him

  840. as teacher,

  841. teacher,

  842. which is the

  843. greatest

  844. commandment,

  845. which is the

  846. great commandment

  847. in the law?

  848. And He said,

  849. that is Jesus

  850. to Him.

  851. You shall

  852. love the

  853. Lord your

  854. God with

  855. all your

  856. heart,

  857. with all

  858. your soul,

  859. with all

  860. your mind.

  861. This is the

  862. great and

  863. first commandment.

  864. Again,

  865. Jesus is

  866. reinforcing it.

  867. Love God.

  868. And then,

  869. Jesus

  870. illustrated the

  871. priority of a

  872. relationship over

  873. service in the

  874. home of two of

  875. His friends,

  876. two sisters,

  877. Martha and

  878. Mary.

  879. It's found in

  880. Luke's Gospel

  881. chapter 10.

  882. Martha was

  883. working in the

  884. kitchen, actually

  885. preparing a meal

  886. for Jesus.

  887. Mary, as

  888. Martha, her

  889. sister, was

  890. working, Mary was

  891. sitting at the

  892. feet of Jesus,

  893. listening to Him

  894. teach, the

  895. passage tells

  896. us.

  897. Well, that

  898. bothered Mary.

  899. Made her mad.

  900. She got upset.

  901. Look at how Luke

  902. describes it.

  903. Chapter 10,

  904. verse 40,

  905. I'm reading from

  906. the New Living

  907. Translation.

  908. But Martha was

  909. distracted by the

  910. big dinner she was

  911. preparing.

  912. She came to Jesus

  913. and said,

  914. Lord, doesn't it

  915. seem unfair to you

  916. that my sister just

  917. sits here while I do

  918. all that work?

  919. Tell her to come

  920. and help me.

  921. Doesn't that sound

  922. like a child?

  923. That's not fair.

  924. That's what really

  925. happened between two

  926. grown adults.

  927. Notice how Jesus

  928. responds, verses 41

  929. and 42.

  930. But the Lord said

  931. to her, my dear

  932. Martha, you are

  933. worried and upset

  934. over all these

  935. details.

  936. There's only one

  937. thing worth being

  938. concerned about.

  939. Mary has discovered

  940. it and it will not

  941. be taken away from

  942. her.

  943. Now, understand,

  944. Jesus was not

  945. discounting what

  946. Martha was doing.

  947. What she was doing

  948. was important.

  949. He was going to

  950. benefit from it.

  951. She was fixing

  952. dinner and he was

  953. going to eat it.

  954. So he's certainly

  955. not complaining.

  956. But what he is

  957. doing here, he is

  958. explaining to Martha,

  959. Mary's got it right.

  960. Mary understands the

  961. priority of a

  962. relationship with me

  963. over just doing

  964. something for me.

  965. God wants us to be

  966. doers.

  967. The whole theme of

  968. the book of James is

  969. be a doer of God's

  970. word.

  971. God wants us to

  972. serve him from a

  973. motivation of love.

  974. Service is important.

  975. We're going to look

  976. at it next week.

  977. But God does not

  978. want us to serve

  979. him like a slave or

  980. like an employee.

  981. God wants us to

  982. understand we're his

  983. children.

  984. He wants us to have

  985. such a loving

  986. relationship with him

  987. as our father that we

  988. do what we do for him

  989. motivated by a love

  990. for our father.

  991. We're working as

  992. children, not hired

  993. hands.

  994. That's what we need

  995. to think when it

  996. comes to service.

  997. For right now, I

  998. want us to think, if

  999. we were in Peter's

1000. place, I want you to

  1001. think, just imagine

  1002. for a moment, you

  1003. are face to face

  1004. with Jesus.

  1005. Imagine him looking

1006. you in the eye and

  1007. asking you, do you

  1008. love me?

  1009. What do you think

  1010. you'd say?

  1011. How would you

  1012. respond?

  1013. Would you be able

  1014. to respond like

  1015. Peter?

  1016. Lord, you know

  1017. everything.

  1018. You know the

  1019. truth.

  1020. You know that I

  1021. love you.

  1022. Would that be

  1023. true?

  1024. Would you want it

  1025. to be true?

  1026. God, you

  1027. know what I

  1028. love you?

  1029. How can we make

  1030. our love for the

  1031. Lord the highest

  1032. priority of our

  1033. life?

  1034. Well, if that's

  1035. going to happen, if

  1036. loving him is going

  1037. to become our number

  1038. one priority, we've

1039. got to first be totally

  1040. honest about where our

  1041. love relationship with

  1042. him is right now.

  1043. If you're going to

  1044. start loving Jesus with

  1045. all your heart, you've

1046. got to stop right now

1047. and think, what do I

1048. love with all my heart

  1049. if it's not him?

1050. Or who is first in my

1051. life if it is not him?

  1052. And settle that.

1053. But if we want to

1054. grow in our love for

  1055. him, we're going to

1056. have to spend time with

  1057. him.

  1058. You think about the

  1059. people in your life

1060. that you have a good,

  1061. close, loving

  1062. relationship with.

  1063. How did that come

  1064. about?

  1065. Didn't it come about

  1066. because you started

  1067. spending time with

  1068. them?

  1069. You got to know

  1070. them?

  1071. You got invested

  1072. with them?

  1073. They got invested

  1074. with you?

1075. It took time, but you

  1076. developed a loving

  1077. relationship.

  1078. And you have good

  1079. fellowship with them

  1080. because you've developed

  1081. it over time.

1082. How much time have you

  1083. actually spent with the

  1084. Lord this past week?

  1085. Think about it,

  1086. seriously.

1087. How much time have you

  1088. spent with the Lord

  1089. this past month?

  1090. Truth is, we spend

  1091. time with those we

  1092. love.

1093. Now we may not get to

1094. spend all the time we

1095. want, but we make at

1096. least some time for the

1097. people in our life that

1098. we really love and care

  1099. about.

  1100. We all do.

1101. And if we love the

1102. Lord and we want to

  1103. have a healthy and

  1104. growing relationship

  1105. with Him, we'll make

  1106. time for Him.

1107. We may have to cut out

  1108. some other things, but

1109. we'll make time for Him

  1110. a priority.

1111. We need to make sure

1112. that when Jesus asks us,

  1113. do you love me?

1114. We will be able to say,

  1115. Lord, you know all

  1116. things.

1117. You know I love you.

  1118. You know, the main

  1119. focus of this passage

1120. and this message is that

  1121. God will restore His

  1122. fallen children who

  1123. come back to Him.

  1124. And that includes you

1125. right now if you are

  1126. away from Him.

1127. The way back to Him,

1128. the way to have a

  1129. right relationship with

1130. Him is the same for

  1131. everyone.

  1132. Admit that you are

  1133. away from Him.

  1134. Confess the sin that

  1135. has caused this

  1136. problem.

  1137. Change your mind

  1138. about it.

  1139. Turn from it.

  1140. Turn from the

  1141. selfishness.

  1142. Turn from the

  1143. worldly attitude.

  1144. whatever it is.

  1145. Humble yourself

  1146. before the Lord as

  1147. you confess and turn

  1148. from your sin.

  1149. And then trust Jesus.

  1150. Trust that He has

  1151. paid the penalty for

  1152. your sin.

1153. You don't have to do

  1154. penance.

1155. You don't have to try

  1156. to undo what you've

  1157. done.

1158. You don't have to try

1159. to work your way back

  1160. over a period of

  1161. several days or months

1162. to be right with the

  1163. Lord.

  1164. Once you realize you're

  1165. away from Him,

  1166. whatever the reason,

  1167. if you'll just stop

  1168. and admit it,

  1169. humble yourself,

  1170. turn from it,

  1171. and just trust Jesus

  1172. has already paid the

  1173. penalty for that sin.

  1174. Acknowledge that.

  1175. Thank Him for that.

  1176. Renew your commitment

  1177. to living in obedience

  1178. to Him.

  1179. Showing your love to

  1180. Him.

  1181. Scripture is real

  1182. clear.

1183. If we confess our sins,

1184. He is faithful and just

1185. to forgive us and to

  1186. cleanse us from all

  1187. unrighteousness.

  1188. He'll give us a fresh

  1189. start.

1190. And when He gives you

  1191. that fresh start,

1192. ask God to give you the

  1193. desire and the ability

1194. to obey Him day by day,

  1195. situation by situation,

1196. so that you can just

1197. walk in a real relationship

  1198. and have good fellowship

  1199. with Him every day.

1200. Now, if you are living

  1201. in a right relationship

1202. with the Lord this morning,

  1203. just thank Him.

1204. Thank Him for the grace

  1205. that has allowed you

  1206. to do that.

  1207. Stay close to Him

1208. by spending time with Him

  1209. in His Word,

  1210. in prayer,

  1211. listening to Him

  1212. as He speaks through

  1213. His Word,

  1214. talking to Him

  1215. as you pray.

  1216. That's what prayer is.

1217. We all need to learn

1218. to stay in a close

  1219. relationship,

  1220. being sensitive to

  1221. the Spirit of God

  1222. who indwells us,

  1223. and then obeying

  1224. the Holy Spirit

  1225. as He prompts us

  1226. to obey God,

  1227. to resist the temptation,

1228. to do what we do

  1229. from a motivation

  1230. of love.

  1231. Final thought.

  1232. Do you love Jesus?

  1233. What does

  1234. He say

  1235. as He examines

  1236. your heart?

  1237. Let's pray together.

  1238. Father,

  1239. Father,

  1240. show us now

  1241. just where we are

  1242. in our relationship

  1243. with You.

  1244. Father,

  1245. if there are people

  1246. in this room

1247. who do not know You,

  1248. so work in them

  1249. to help them

  1250. to understand that,

  1251. that their sin

  1252. separates them

  1253. from You.

  1254. And so work,

  1255. dear God,

  1256. to give them

  1257. a true desire

  1258. to be forgiven,

  1259. to be made right

  1260. with You.

  1261. Help them,

  1262. dear God,

  1263. to not just confess

  1264. and agree with You

  1265. over their sin,

1266. but to turn from it,

  1267. to change their mind,

  1268. to grieve over it.

  1269. And help them

  1270. to understand,

  1271. Father,

  1272. that when Jesus

  1273. died on the cross,

  1274. He died

  1275. to pay the penalty

  1276. for their sin,

  1277. to suffer

  1278. the punishment

  1279. that they deserve.

  1280. Help them

  1281. to trust Jesus

  1282. and call upon Him

  1283. right now

  1284. to save them.

  1285. Help them

  1286. to understand,

  1287. dear God,

  1288. that trusting Jesus

  1289. and surrendering

  1290. to Him

  1291. is the most important

  1292. response

  1293. they could make

  1294. this morning.

  1295. But then,

  1296. dear God,

  1297. help all of us

  1298. as Christians

  1299. to understand

  1300. that no matter

  1301. how long

  1302. we have been Christians,

  1303. our greatest need

  1304. in life

  1305. is to trust You

  1306. and obey You.

  1307. Help us,

  1308. dear God,

  1309. to do it

  1310. because we love You.

  1311. Overwhelm us

  1312. right now

  1313. with an awareness

  1314. of Your love

  1315. and Your grace

  1316. and Your mercy.

  1317. If there's anyone

  1318. in this room

  1319. who is truly

  1320. in a state

  1321. of rebellion

  1322. or indifference

  1323. or hard

  1324. or cold-heartedness,

  1325. awaken them,

  1326. break them,

  1327. humble them,

  1328. bring them back

  1329. to Yourself.

  1330. Help us all,

  1331. every single one

  1332. of us,

  1333. dear God,

  1334. right now

  1335. to be open

  1336. and honest

  1337. with You.

  1338. Help us

  1339. to understand

  1340. what we should do.

  1341. Help us

  1342. to do it.

  1343. You just pray

1344. and talk to the Lord

  1345. and do what He's

  1346. telling you to do.

  1347. I would be happy

  1348. here at the front

  1349. to pray with you

1350. in the next few minutes

1351. if you want to come forward.

  1352. But you listen

  1353. to God

  1354. and you do

  1355. what He's telling you

  1356. to do

1357. knowing that He loves you

  1358. and He wants you

  1359. to leave here today

  1360. in a close,
