  1. I want you to think about some of the personalities in the Bible that you know well.

  2. Don't answer out loud, but Old or New Testament.

  3. Think, this person, that person.

  4. With the exception of Jesus, whoever came to your mind,

  5. they are, were flawed people, weren't they?

  6. Just about all of the people you read about in Scripture,

  7. I'm talking about the major ones.

  8. Abraham, Moses, David.

  9. The Bible lets you see how they failed God at times.

  10. And it was serious.

  11. It was terrible.

  12. But God never gave up on them.

  13. And God worked in their lives to bring them back

  14. and to restore them to a right relationship with Him.

  15. That's something that all of us needs to be thankful for.

  16. When you read the Bible, you're reading about flawed, sinful, imperfect people just like us.

  17. That's who God works in and through to accomplish His purpose in this world.

  18. That means He can work through us.

  19. But when we do fail Him, when we do fall,

  20. what we need to understand is if we will come back to Him humbly,

  21. repentant, seeking His forgiveness, He will always take us back.

  22. He'll always forgive, cleanse us, and give us a fresh start.

  23. Because He's in the restoration business.

  24. I want you to turn back with me to John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  25. where we've been looking at a restoration story now.

  26. This will be the third week.

  27. This is going to be the final week.

  28. We've looked at how the Lord restored Peter

  29. after his unbelievable fall

  30. on the night that Jesus was arrested.

  31. Peter denied that he even knew Jesus three times.

  32. But the Lord brought him back.

  33. And we've been studying that.

  34. And let's look at it one more time.

  35. John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  36. Let's read this event.

  37. It takes place.

  38. Jesus and seven disciples

  39. around a breakfast campfire

  40. beside a lake.

  41. Verse 15.

  42. When they had finished breakfast,

  43. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  44. Simon, son of John,

  45. do you love me more than these?

  46. He said to him,

  47. Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  48. He said to him,

  49. Feed my lambs.

  50. He said to him a second time,

  51. Simon, son of John,

  52. do you love me?

  53. He said to him,

  54. Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  55. He said to him,

  56. Tend my sheep.

  57. He, that is Jesus,

  58. said to him the third time,

  59. Simon, son of John,

  60. do you love me?

  61. Well, Peter was grieved

  62. because he said to him,

  63. The third time,

  64. do you love me?

  65. He said to him,

  66. Lord, you know everything.

  67. You know that I love you.

  68. Jesus said to him,

  69. Feed my sheep.

  70. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  71. when you were young,

  72. you used to dress yourself

  73. and walk wherever you wanted.

  74. But when you are old,

  75. you will stretch out your hands

  76. and another will dress you

  77. and carry you where you do not want to go.

  78. This he said to show

  79. by what kind of death

  80. he was to glorify God.

  81. And after saying this,

  82. he said to him,

  83. Follow me.

  84. Well, Peter turned and saw the disciple

  85. whom Jesus loved following them.

  86. That's John.

  87. The one who also had leaned back against him

  88. during the supper

  89. and had said,

  90. Lord, who is it that's going to betray you?

  91. When Peter saw him,

  92. he said to Jesus,

  93. Lord, what about this man?

  94. And Jesus said to him,

  95. If it is my will that he remain until I come,

  96. what is that to you?

  97. You follow me.

  98. Two weeks ago,

  99. we looked at how the Lord's

  100. in the restoration business,

  101. how he didn't let Peter stay

  102. in that fallen condition

  103. but brought him back.

  104. Last week,

  105. we looked at how the Lord's restoration

  106. is both relational and practical.

  107. Jesus restored Peter

  108. to a real loving relationship with him.

  109. That's why there's such an emphasis

  110. on the word love.

  111. Jesus asking him,

  112. Do you love me?

  113. But also,

  114. Jesus restored Peter

  115. to his place of leadership

  116. among the disciples

  117. and restored him

  118. to the ministry

  119. or the service

  120. that Jesus had for him.

  121. We spent last week

  122. looking at that restored relationship.

  123. Just note very quickly,

  124. a true relationship with the Lord

  125. is built on the foundation of love.

  126. A true relationship with the Lord

  127. is built on a foundation of love.

  128. His love for us,

  129. our love for him.

  130. Restoring Peter to this loving relationship

  131. with himself

  132. was Jesus' first priority.

  133. That's why I ask him three times,

  134. verses 15, 16, and 17,

  135. Do you love me?

  136. What we see in this

  137. is that God puts a priority

  138. on our relationship with him.

  139. Certainly, God wants us to obey him.

  140. He wants us to serve him.

  141. He wants us to do his will.

  142. But God wants us to do that

  143. because we love him

  144. and we want to please him

  145. like a little child

  146. wants to please their parents.

  147. Now, I said little child.

  148. You remember when you were real little?

  149. Three, four, five maybe?

  150. And it was your desire

  151. to please your parents.

  152. You liked to get their attention.

  153. You liked for them to watch you

  154. because you wanted to show them something.

  155. You were wanting to connect with them.

  156. That's what that's all about.

  157. You have a relationship with them.

  158. You love them.

  159. You want them in your life.

  160. You want them to approve.

  161. You want to bring a smile to their face.

  162. God wants us to do his will.

  163. He wants us to serve him

  164. because we really and truly do love him.

  165. He's our heavenly father.

  166. And we want to bring a smile to his face

  167. by what we do for him.

  168. But let's move on in that passage.

  169. Jesus did more than just restore Peter

  170. to a loving relationship.

  171. Jesus recommissioned him.

  172. Let's look at it now.

  173. A true relationship with the Lord

  174. involves committed service.

  175. Peter was recommissioned by Jesus

  176. to this special ministry

  177. that Jesus had for him.

  178. Notice how Jesus did it

  179. in verses 15 through 17.

  180. Each time Peter expressed his love for Jesus,

  181. Jesus told him to take care of his sheep.

  182. Notice that.

  183. Feed my lambs.

  184. Tend my sheep.

  185. Feed my sheep.

  186. Peter was called and gifted by the Lord

  187. to be a leader in the early church.

  188. He was a great preacher and teacher.

  189. You can read through the first 12 chapters

  190. of the book of Acts and see all that.

  191. You see, he was a leader.

  192. He made a difference in Jerusalem

  193. and the outlying areas

  194. as that new church started

  195. and was beginning to flourish.

  196. He was also used of God to preach.

  197. Thousands of people believed,

  198. became Christians under that kind of preaching.

  199. But every Christian is gifted

  200. to serve the Lord in some kind of ministry.

  201. It may not be the kind of ministry that Peter had.

  202. You know, if our relationship with the Lord is healthy,

  203. we'll have a desire to serve Him

  204. in the ways that He has gifted

  205. and equipped us to serve Him.

  206. If we have a right relationship with the Lord,

  207. we will want to be involved in serving Him

  208. as we are able to serve Him.

  209. But we'll do it differently.

  210. That's what I want to emphasize here.

  211. Now, we're not all called to do the same thing

  212. because we're not made the same.

  213. We have a different gift and skill set.

  214. You have a different gift and skill set

  215. from the person sitting beside you

  216. wherever you are seated this morning.

  217. But we all should want to serve the Lord

  218. as we can

  219. if we really have a loving relationship with Him.

  220. Now, if you're not involved in some kind of ministry right now,

  221. when I say this,

  222. the way we serve Him,

  223. it varies.

  224. Some people do it publicly.

  225. Some people serve the Lord faithfully,

  226. but nobody ever sees them.

  227. Some people are involved every Sunday,

  228. maybe singing in the choir,

  229. playing an instrument,

  230. teaching a Sunday school class.

  231. Some people are involved less frequently

  232. because what they are gifted and involved in,

  233. it doesn't need to be done every week.

  234. We're not talking about how much you serve

  235. or anything like that.

  236. The question now is,

  237. are you serving the Lord

  238. in some way

  239. as you ought to,

  240. not like somebody else?

  241. If you're not,

  242. why is it?

  243. If you're not serving Him,

  244. my first guess is,

  245. the problem,

  246. the source of the problem is,

  247. there's something missing

  248. in your relationship with Him.

  249. I'm not saying that you're not a Christian.

  250. I'm saying something is not exactly right

  251. because if you're really

  252. in fellowship with Him,

  253. sensitive to His Spirit who indwells you,

  254. aware of the gifts He's given you,

  255. you're going to want to please Him

  256. by doing what it is that

  257. you know He wants you to do.

  258. So if you're not serving Him,

  259. what's wrong?

  260. What needs to change?

  261. You talk to the Lord about it

  262. and ask Him to help you,

  263. maybe to have a greater desire

  264. or maybe to show you

  265. what it is you need to be doing.

  266. If your relationship with Him is good,

  267. it's close,

  268. you're going to want to serve Him

  269. out of your love for Him.

  270. But it may not be easy.

  271. Now some ministries are.

  272. Some things people are involved in

  273. that are needed to be done,

  274. it doesn't take a whole lot of time,

  275. it doesn't take a whole lot of sweat,

  276. if any.

  277. And I'm not minimizing that.

  278. But some Christians

  279. are called to very difficult service

  280. and Peter is at the top of the list

  281. in the difficult service he was called.

  282. See, Peter did more than just preach and teach.

  283. He did more than just lead people

  284. who loved him and wanted to follow him.

  285. Peter served the Lord in such a way

  286. that it eventually required

  287. or led to his painful death.

  288. And that's what verses 18 and 19

  289. is talking about.

  290. Look back in verse 18.

  291. Jesus described Peter's younger days

  292. basically as just a life of freedom.

  293. Look at it.

  294. When you were young,

  295. you used to dress yourself

  296. and walk wherever you wanted.

  297. But Jesus describes Peter's later years

  298. in opposite terms.

  299. Look at it.

  300. But when you are old,

  301. you will stretch out your hands

  302. and another will dress you

  303. and carry you where you do not want to go.

  304. Now he's not talking about,

  305. Jesus is not saying,

  306. Peter, when you get old,

  307. you're just going to be old and decrepit

  308. and people are going to have to lead you around.

  309. That's not what he's talking about

  310. because verse 19 tells us

  311. what Jesus was talking about.

  312. Look at it.

  313. Jesus was explaining

  314. that Peter's going to die a martyr's death.

  315. It's a parenthetical phrase.

  316. This he said to show

  317. by what kind of death

  318. he was to glorify God.

  319. Commentators say that describing death

  320. as a way of glorifying God

  321. was a standard Christian way

  322. for describing martyrdom,

  323. dying for your faith.

  324. They also point out that that phrase,

  325. stretch out your hands,

  326. in this kind of context,

  327. talking about death,

  328. is a reference to crucifixion.

  329. The New Testament does not tell us

  330. how Peter died.

  331. In fact, the New Testament

  332. doesn't even tell us he died.

  333. But early church tradition tells us

  334. that Peter was put to death

  335. because of his faith,

  336. that he was put to death

  337. by crucifixion.

  338. Now, obviously,

  339. all Christians are not required to die

  340. as a part of their service for the Lord.

  341. I personally have never known

  342. of someone who had to die

  343. in order to be faithful to the Lord.

  344. But thousands of people

  345. have died in the 21st century

  346. all because they were Christians,

  347. they were open about their faith,

  348. and when persecution came,

  349. they didn't renounce the Lord.

  350. We have all read about

  351. Christians who have been executed

  352. by such terrorist groups as ISIS

  353. just recently,

  354. recent past.

  355. That's happening.

  356. It's always happened

  357. throughout the history of the world.

  358. It is still happening.

  359. But most of us,

  360. unless you leave this country,

  361. we're not going to be called upon

  362. in all likelihood

  363. to have to die

  364. as a result of being faithful to the Lord.

  365. But the Lord does call us

  366. to be willing to die,

  367. to have that kind of commitment to Him,

  368. that we're willing to die

  369. if necessary.

  370. Jesus made it clear on many occasions,

  371. the way that He talked to His disciples,

  372. the way that He had talked to people

  373. who were sort of inquiring

  374. about what it took to be His disciple.

  375. Jesus gave very strong statements

  376. about what it meant to follow Him.

  377. Look at one good example in Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  378. And He said to all,

  379. that is Jesus,

  380. if anyone would come after me,

  381. let him deny himself

  382. and take up his cross daily

  383. and follow me.

  384. You see, Jesus,

  385. He never watered down the message

  386. that following Him

  387. would not be costly.

  388. Jesus never said anything

  389. like Joel Osteen would say.

  390. Jesus never talked about

  391. this health and wealth,

  392. that if you really have

  393. the right kind of faith

  394. and you really trust God,

  395. He's going to make you healthy,

  396. He's going to make you wealthy.

  397. That's garbage.

  398. That's trash.

  399. That is absolutely,

  400. 100% contrary

  401. to the teaching of Scripture

  402. about what it means

  403. to live as a Christian

  404. in this world.

  405. Some of the most godly people

  406. who've ever lived

  407. have suffered physically,

  408. have suffered economically.

  409. They've had a hard life.

  410. And the reality is

  411. the Bible does not promise

  412. that it won't be that way

  413. for you and me.

  414. To follow Christ

  415. requires a total commitment

  416. to Him,

  417. to knowing, loving, serving Him

  418. regardless of what it takes.

  419. How can a person do that?

  420. How can we do that?

  421. Well, the Apostle Paul

  422. explains what motivates

  423. Christians to give their life

  424. in service to the Lord.

  425. He's explaining himself,

  426. he's explaining

  427. how we can do this

  428. in 2 Corinthians chapter 5.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  429. Look at it.

  430. He says,

  431. For the love of Christ

  432. controls us.

  433. Christ died for all

  434. that those who live

  435. might no longer live

  436. for themselves,

  437. but for Him

  438. who for their sake

  439. died and was raised.

  440. You see,

  441. Paul was motivated

  442. by the love

  443. that Christ demonstrated

  444. in dying on the cross

  445. to pay the penalty

  446. for his sins.

  447. And because he knew

  448. the Lord gave his life

  449. for him,

  450. because he knew

  451. that Jesus loved him

  452. that much,

  453. he loved Jesus

  454. in return.

  455. He gave,

  456. Christ gave his life

  457. for him,

  458. Paul gave his life

  459. back.

  460. There was love

  461. both ways.

  462. That's what motivated

  463. Peter as well.

  464. That's what will

  465. motivate us.

  466. us.

  467. Having a loving

  468. relationship

  469. with the Lord

  470. is the key

  471. to faithfulness.

  472. Some of you

  473. have read

  474. of a famous

  475. missionary

  476. named Hudson Taylor.

  477. He gave his life

  478. in mission service

  479. in China.

  480. On one occasion

  481. he was introduced

  482. to a group

  483. of Christians

  484. as a great missionary

  485. who had given

  486. his life

  487. to the Orient

  488. because he loved

  489. the Chinese.

  490. Well, Taylor

  491. when he got up

  492. to speak

  493. he shook his head

  494. and answered

  495. thoughtfully

  496. this,

  497. no,

  498. not because

  499. I loved

  500. the Chinese

  501. but because

  502. I loved

  503. God.

  504. Now,

  505. he did love

  506. those people

  507. but the reason

  508. he left home

  509. and family

  510. and an easier

  511. life

  512. was because

  513. he loved

  514. God

  515. and he

  516. believed

  517. that God

  518. had called

  519. him to

  520. serve him

  521. in China

  522. and so

  523. because he

  524. loved God

  525. and he wanted

  526. to please

  527. the God

  528. that he

  529. loved

  530. that's why

  531. he did

  532. what he

  533. did

  534. and we

  535. can relate

  536. to that.

  537. I want you

  538. to think

  539. with me.

  540. we can relate

  541. to this idea

  542. of doing

  543. things

  544. that we

  545. don't want

  546. to do

  547. but we

  548. do it

  549. for the

  550. one

  551. that we

  552. love.

  553. A lot of

  554. people in

  555. this room

  556. you have

  557. sat up

  558. at the

  559. hospital

  560. or maybe

  561. in a home

  562. maybe at a

  563. hospice house

  564. you have

  565. sat up

  566. with someone

  567. who

  568. didn't have

  569. it all

  570. together

  571. and they

  572. were trying

  573. to take

  574. the IVs

  575. out of

  576. their arm

  577. they were

  578. trying to

  579. get up

  580. out of

  581. the bed

  582. they did

  583. not cooperate

  584. but you

  585. stayed there

  586. standing up

  587. part of the

  588. night

  589. maybe on

  590. the edge

  591. of the

  592. chair

  593. part of

  594. the night

  595. you stayed

  596. there and

  597. did all

  598. that

  599. not

  600. because it

  601. was fun

  602. not because

  603. you wanted

  604. to do

  605. that

  606. make that

  607. person stay

  608. into bed

  609. hold their

  610. hands back

  611. now you

  612. didn't want

  613. to do

  614. that

  615. but you

  616. loved the

  617. person you

  618. were caring

  619. for enough

  620. to be willing

  621. to do

  622. that

  623. you did

  624. something that

  625. was hard

  626. you did

  627. something that

  628. was uncomfortable

  629. you did

  630. something that

  631. caused you

  632. great stress

  633. not because

  634. of anything

  635. you got

  636. out of

  637. it

  638. joyfully

  639. emotionally

  640. but because

  641. you loved

  642. the person

  643. the parent

  644. the grandparent

  645. the friend

  646. that you

  647. were trying

  648. to take

  649. care of

  650. I'm going

  651. to guess

  652. that some

  653. of you

  654. work a job

  655. that you

  656. don't really

  657. like

  658. I know

  659. some people

  660. work a job

  661. that they

  662. basically

  663. just hate

  664. and the

  665. reason they

  666. work that

  667. job

  668. is to make

  669. a living

  670. for the

  671. people in

  672. their home

  673. that they

  674. love

  675. they don't

  676. get up in

  677. the morning

  678. and go to

  679. work because

  680. they enjoy

  681. what they

  682. do

  683. they get

  684. up and

  685. go to

  686. work

  687. because

  688. they love

  689. the people

  690. that they

  691. are going

  692. to support

  693. you see

  694. we do

  695. understand

  696. and we

  697. do

  698. things in

  699. our lives

  700. that are

  701. hard

  702. that are

  703. painful

  704. sometimes

  705. that we

  706. absolutely

  707. don't want

  708. to do

  709. we never

  710. choose to

  711. do

  712. but because

  713. we're

  714. motivated

  715. by love

  716. for a

  717. person

  718. we do

  719. whatever

  720. it takes

  721. and so

  722. if we

  723. have the

  724. right kind

  725. of relationship

  726. with the

  727. Lord

  728. we should

  729. be willing

  730. to do

  731. whatever

  732. it takes

  733. to be

  734. faithful

  735. to him

  736. and as

  737. we have

  738. this right

  739. kind of

  740. love for

  741. him

  742. and put

  743. forth that

  744. effort

  745. the Lord

  746. is going

  747. to give

  748. us what

  749. we need

  750. to remain

  751. faithful

  752. that's what

  753. Paul talked

  754. about in

  755. Colossians

    Colossians 1:29

  756. chapter 1

  757. verse 29

  758. see Paul

  759. talked about

  760. he was

  761. motivated by

  762. his love

  763. for Christ

  764. Christ's

  765. love for

  766. him

  767. but look

  768. what else

  769. he said

  770. here

  771. to this

  772. verse

  773. from the

  774. New Living

  775. Translation

  776. that's why

  777. I work

  778. and struggle

  779. so hard

  780. depending on

  781. Christ's

  782. mighty

  783. power

  784. that works

  785. within me

  786. the Spirit

  787. of God

  788. lives within

  789. us

  790. and it's

  791. the Spirit

  792. of God

  793. who gives

  794. us the

  795. desire

  796. and the

  797. ability

  798. to hang

  799. in there

  800. to be

  801. faithful

  802. if we

  803. want to

  804. be

  805. because we

  806. love our

  807. Lord

  808. let's look

  809. at one

  810. more lesson

  811. in this

  812. restoration

  813. story

  814. sort of

  815. switching

  816. gears

  817. a little

  818. bit

  819. here

  820. our

  821. Lord

  822. calls

  823. us

  824. to

  825. focus

  826. on

  827. the

  828. ministry

  829. he

  830. has

  831. assigned

  832. to

  833. us

  834. not

  835. the

  836. ministry

  837. he

  838. has

  839. assigned

  840. to

  841. others

  842. that's

  843. what he's

  844. talking

  845. about

  846. verses 20

  847. through 22

  848. at some point

  849. after this

  850. breakfast

  851. Jesus and

  852. Peter got up

  853. and took a walk

  854. down the beach

  855. well Peter

  856. noticed over his

  857. shoulder I guess

  858. that John

  859. was walking

  860. along behind

  861. them

  862. and so he

  863. asked Jesus

  864. the question

  865. look at it

  866. Lord

  867. what about

  868. this man

  869. I want you

  870. to think

  871. Jesus had

  872. just told

  873. Peter

  874. you're going

  875. to die

  876. a martyr's

  877. death

  878. how would

  879. you feel

  880. when you

  881. heard that

  882. for the

  883. first time

  884. well

  885. Peter

  886. now

  887. he wants

  888. to know

  889. what's going

  890. to happen

  891. to John

  892. who also

  893. has a close

  894. relationship

  895. with Jesus

  896. you understand

  897. what Peter

  898. is doing

  899. Peter

  900. now

  901. is

  902. going

  903. to compare

  904. himself

  905. what he's

  906. got to do

  907. with John

  908. and what

  909. Jesus has

  910. in store

  911. for him

  912. but I want

  913. you to look

  914. at how Jesus

  915. responds

  916. if it is

  917. my will

  918. that he

  919. remain

  920. until I

  921. come

  922. what is

  923. that to

  924. you

  925. you follow

  926. me

  927. Jesus

  928. is being

  929. very blunt

  930. here

  931. he's saying

  932. what I have

  933. in store

  934. for John

  935. is none

  936. of your

  937. business

  938. makes no

  939. bones

  940. does he

  941. you just

  942. do what I

  943. told you

  944. that's what

  945. Jesus

  946. is saying

  947. if I

  948. want him

  949. to stay

  950. alive

  951. until I

  952. come again

  953. you're

  954. going to

  955. die

  956. Peter

  957. but if

  958. it's

  959. my will

  960. that he

  961. stay

  962. alive

  963. and healthy

  964. and well

  965. until I

  966. come back

  967. what's

  968. it to

  969. you

  970. you don't

  971. worry about

  972. him

  973. you take

  974. care of

  975. you

  976. that's

  977. what he's

  978. saying

  979. in effect

  980. Jesus

  981. is telling

  982. Peter

  983. M-Y-O-B

  984. mind your

  985. own

  986. business

  987. Jesus

  988. was not

  989. telling

  990. Peter

  991. that he

  992. shouldn't

  993. care about

  994. others

  995. but he

  996. is clearly

  997. telling him

  998. not to

  999. compare

  1000. himself

  1001. or his

  1002. ministry

  1003. assignment

  1004. with other

  1005. people

  1006. this is the

  1007. lesson we need

  1008. to learn

  1009. don't we

  1010. personally

  1011. on a

  1012. personal

  1013. level

  1014. we are

  1015. tempted to

  1016. compare

  1017. ourselves

  1018. with other

  1019. people

  1020. and we

  1021. sometimes

  1022. like to

  1023. grumble

  1024. and complain

  1025. we might

  1026. say something

  1027. we might

  1028. think it

  1029. Lord

  1030. I am

  1031. trying to

  1032. be faithful

  1033. I'm trying

  1034. to live a

  1035. faithful life

  1036. I'm trying

  1037. to do

  1038. what I

  1039. know

  1040. you want

  1041. me to

  1042. do

  1043. I'm being

  1044. faithful

  1045. in my

  1046. giving

  1047. I'm being

  1048. faithful

  1049. in serving

  1050. you

  1051. but I'm

  1052. struggling

  1053. and my

  1054. neighbors

  1055. who are not

  1056. Christians

  1057. who don't

  1058. really care

  1059. about you

  1060. they seem

  1061. to be

  1062. just

  1063. having it

  1064. great in

  1065. life

  1066. no

  1067. struggles

  1068. why

  1069. is this

  1070. happening

  1071. we like

  1072. to grumble

  1073. and complain

  1074. sometimes

  1075. we like

  1076. to whine

  1077. like a

  1078. child

  1079. demanding

  1080. equal

  1081. treatment

  1082. I will

  1083. never forget

  1084. the time

  1085. when my

  1086. son David

  1087. who was

  1088. about four

  1089. or five

  1090. years old

  1091. and Michael

  1092. was two

  1093. or three

  1094. and Lisa

  1095. had them

  1096. both in

  1097. the bathroom

  1098. getting them

  1099. ready to go

  1100. somewhere

  1101. and in all

  1102. the confusion

  1103. she said to

  1104. David

  1105. uh oh David

  1106. I just

  1107. brushed

  1108. Michael's

  1109. teeth

  1110. with your

  1111. toothbrush

  1112. and David

  1113. quickly shot

  1114. back

  1115. well I'm

  1116. using

  1117. his

  1118. so intent

  1119. so intent

  1120. we are

  1121. sometimes

  1122. to have

  1123. everything

  1124. equal

  1125. to make

  1126. sure someone

  1127. is not

  1128. one up

  1129. on us

  1130. we say

  1131. and do

  1132. foolish

  1133. and immature

  1134. things

  1135. that happened

  1136. many many

  1137. years ago

  1138. Lisa and I

  1139. still laugh

  1140. how a little

  1141. child

  1142. would say

  1143. I'm going to

  1144. use somebody

  1145. else's

  1146. toothbrush

  1147. don't you

  1148. think

  1149. really and

  1150. truly

  1151. don't you

  1152. think God

  1153. is our

  1154. heavenly

  1155. father

  1156. looks at

  1157. some of

  1158. the things

  1159. that we

  1160. do

  1161. some of

  1162. the foolish

  1163. things that

  1164. we do

  1165. and say

  1166. don't you

  1167. think he

  1168. laughs at

  1169. us

  1170. because we

  1171. do things

  1172. just like

  1173. that

  1174. and we

  1175. don't

  1176. understand

  1177. just how

  1178. immature

  1179. how crazy

  1180. it is

  1181. you know

  1182. in our

  1183. church

  1184. ministry

  1185. if you're

  1186. involved in

  1187. the life

  1188. of the church

  1189. in some way

  1190. we can be

  1191. tempted to

  1192. think that

  1193. my gifts

  1194. and my

  1195. talents

  1196. and my

  1197. abilities

  1198. that's what's

  1199. most important

  1200. we may even

  1201. suddenly try to

  1202. minimize the

  1203. value of other

  1204. people's

  1205. ministries

  1206. their gifts

  1207. or even worse

  1208. we would never

  1209. say it

  1210. but we might

  1211. sometimes smile

  1212. when they fail

  1213. or when they

  1214. don't do so

  1215. well

  1216. whenever we

  1217. think like that

  1218. we need to

  1219. call it

  1220. what it is

  1221. it's pride

  1222. it's selfishness

  1223. it's jealousy

  1224. it's envy

  1225. whatever it is

  1226. the root cause

  1227. is sin

  1228. and you know

  1229. God hates

  1230. sin

  1231. Chuck Swindoll

  1232. helps us to see

  1233. that when we

  1234. compare ourselves

  1235. with others

  1236. or complain

  1237. about our

  1238. differences

  1239. we are really

  1240. criticizing

  1241. God

  1242. and the way

  1243. he works

  1244. look at what

  1245. Swindoll says

  1246. God's calling

  1247. is personal

  1248. and his leading

  1249. is unique

  1250. all Christians

  1251. enroll in the

  1252. same school

  1253. but our

  1254. individual curricula

  1255. is vastly

  1256. different

  1257. because we have

  1258. different needs

  1259. different gifts

  1260. and different

  1261. callings

  1262. our coursework

  1263. is tailor made

  1264. to match

  1265. we're not

  1266. cookie cutter

  1267. Christians

  1268. although we're

  1269. cut out of

  1270. the same

  1271. dough

  1272. we're not

  1273. cut out

  1274. in the same

  1275. size

  1276. or shape

  1277. as even

  1278. our closest

  1279. friends

  1280. or co-workers

  1281. we are all

  1282. predestined

  1283. to become

  1284. like Christ

  1285. that's what

  1286. it says

  1287. in Romans

  1288. 8 29

  1289. the route

  1290. God takes

  1291. us to get

  1292. there however

  1293. varies

  1294. significantly

  1295. from one

  1296. person

  1297. to another

  1298. instead of us

  1299. looking around

  1300. at someone else

  1301. this morning

  1302. criticizing

  1303. or comparing

  1304. let's close

  1305. this out

  1306. by just

  1307. looking

  1308. at ourselves

  1309. how would

  1310. you describe

  1311. your relationship

  1312. with the Lord

  1313. right now

  1314. do you really

  1315. and truly

  1316. have a relationship

  1317. with Him

  1318. as your

  1319. Savior

  1320. and Lord

  1321. if you don't

  1322. do you want

  1323. one

  1324. if you do

  1325. you can have

  1326. one

  1327. if you'll

  1328. admit

  1329. your need

  1330. the fact

  1331. that you

  1332. don't have

  1333. a relationship

  1334. with God

  1335. admit your

  1336. sin

  1337. and truly

  1338. repent of it

  1339. change your

  1340. mind

  1341. humble yourself

  1342. before God

  1343. grieve over it

  1344. turn from it

  1345. and put your

  1346. trust in Jesus

  1347. that when He

  1348. died on the

  1349. cross

  1350. He died

  1351. to pay the

  1352. penalty

  1353. for the sins

  1354. you've committed

  1355. if you'll

  1356. believe that

  1357. when God

  1358. raised Him

  1359. from the dead

  1360. that was God's

  1361. way of saying

  1362. I've accepted

  1363. His sacrifice

  1364. if you'll

  1365. put your

  1366. faith in Jesus

  1367. call upon Him

  1368. to save you

  1369. He will

  1370. He'll forgive you

  1371. He'll give you

  1372. a fresh start

  1373. a new start

  1374. right now

  1375. so call on Him

  1376. now

  1377. if you have

  1378. a relationship

  1379. with Him

  1380. as a Christian

  1381. is it healthy

  1382. right now
