  1. Well, excitement is really building, if you're a football fan right now.

  2. Just think about it.

  3. High school games begin this Friday night.

  4. Y'all are at Easley, right?

  5. Okay.

  6. Three weeks from yesterday, college games begin.

  7. And I think the NFL begins on Thursday night, September the 7th.

  8. But I know everybody does not get into football.

  9. There's millions of people who love basketball, baseball, soccer throughout the world, volleyball.

  10. Here it begins big.

  11. A lot of people throughout this world, throughout this country, they're big into sports.

  12. Now today, we can know more about our favorite team and favorite athlete than in any other time in history

  13. because there's so much media coverage.

  14. But I want everybody to understand, ESPN is not responsible for all the great interest there is in sports.

  15. For centuries, people have really gotten into athletic games of all kinds.

  16. Even the Apostle Paul in the first century.

  17. He was either a sports fan himself or he knew that a lot of people were because in several of his letters,

  18. he uses sports terminology, sports analogies.

  19. For example, look on the screen.

  20. In his letter to the Corinthians, his first letter, he says,

  21. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.

  22. I do not run aimlessly.

  23. I do not box as one beating the air.

  24. He's writing to Christians and talking to them about living the Christian life.

  25. And it takes discipline.

  26. It takes a lot of self-control.

  27. And he compared it to athletics, especially a runner, a boxer.

  28. He says in 2 Timothy 2.5,

  29. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

  30. That was his way of saying it matters how you live.

  31. It matters how you do everything in life.

  32. It matters how you do your job.

  33. It matters how you play the game.

  34. The worst thing that could happen on Friday night,

  35. one of the worst things,

  36. is y'all are behind,

  37. last minute of the game,

  38. somebody breaks free,

  39. runs 50 yards for a touchdown for the winning score,

  40. and you look back up,

  41. and there's a yellow flag on the field.

  42. Somebody blocked somebody in the back.

  43. It matters how you play the game.

  44. It matters how you play the game of life.

  45. And that was Paul's way of stressing,

  46. it matters.

  47. Now, the writer of the Hebrews,

  48. he is unknown,

  49. but he was aware of how people were interested in sports.

  50. And he writes in Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  51. beginning in verse 1,

  52. about the need for us to live a faithful Christian life,

  53. just like a runner,

  54. must discipline himself or herself,

  55. stay focused to run and win their race.

  56. I want you to look at it with me.

  57. Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  58. We're going to read verses 1 and 2,

  59. and please keep your Bible open to that,

  60. because there will be times when it will not all be on the screen.

  61. Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12:1

  62. verses 1 and 2.

  63. Look at it with me.

  64. Therefore,

  65. since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,

  66. let us also lay aside every weight,

  67. and sin which clings so closely,

  68. and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

  69. looking to Jesus,

  70. the founder and perfecter of our faith,

  71. who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,

  72. despising the shame,

  73. and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  74. As we go through this message,

  75. I want you to think about living the Christian life

  76. in terms of a long-distance race.

  77. Living a Christian life is not a sprint.

  78. It's a long-distance race.

  79. It's like a marathon.

  80. But in this passage this morning,

  81. let's think more of a long-distance race,

  82. 5,000 meters, 10,000,

  83. something that could take place on a track with spectators.

  84. We are instructed in these two verses

  85. to be disciplined,

  86. to be focused on the goal,

  87. to stay faithful no matter what.

  88. No matter what it costs,

  89. and finish the race.

  90. Just like an Olympic athlete

  91. running a long-distance race would have to do.

  92. Now the first thing I want us to notice

  93. about running the race of Christian living

  94. deals with some motivation.

  95. Look at it.

  96. We should be motivated by the example of people

  97. who have successfully completed the race.

  98. Look at verse 1 in that first word,

  99. therefore.

  100. The writer is pointing back to a long list

  101. of men and women

  102. in chapter 11

  103. that he was telling the Hebrew Christians about,

  104. men and women from the Old Testament,

  105. who were faithful.

  106. Now let me give you a little background of this letter.

  107. This letter to Hebrew Christians,

  108. Jewish Christians,

  109. who were having a hard time

  110. because they were being persecuted.

  111. You can read toward the end of chapter 10 of Hebrews,

  112. some of these people had been put in prison,

  113. or they knew people,

  114. Christians,

  115. who had been put in prison

  116. just because they were Christians.

  117. Some of them had had their property

  118. taken away from them

  119. just because they were followers of Jesus.

  120. And so he's writing to people

  121. who are really struggling

  122. because it's costing them something

  123. to let everybody know they're Christians

  124. and to live like it.

  125. Some of them are being tempted

  126. to just forget it all.

  127. As you read through this letter,

  128. it's obvious.

  129. He is trying to encourage them,

  130. don't quit.

  131. Don't turn around and walk away from Christ

  132. as if you no longer believe in Him

  133. or want to have anything to do with Him.

  134. The writer is encouraging these people

  135. to stay faithful

  136. by pointing out how men and women

  137. in the Old Testament

  138. endured hard times

  139. and they remained faithful.

  140. Some of them,

  141. they were even killed,

  142. but they would not renounce their faith.

  143. They ran their race,

  144. however long it was,

  145. to the very end and never quit.

  146. And now in verse 1,

  147. these Old Testament believers

  148. are what he calls

  149. a great cloud of witnesses.

  150. It's like these people

  151. who've gone before you

  152. and they've been faithful,

  153. well, they're in the stands

  154. and they're watching you

  155. as you run your race.

  156. Think about it.

  157. He's saying these people

  158. are watching you.

  159. He's not saying these people

  160. who never played,

  161. people who were never in the race.

  162. This writer is saying

  163. to these Christians

  164. who are struggling,

  165. there's people in the stands,

  166. they have struggled

  167. and they persevered.

  168. They hung in there.

  169. They didn't quit

  170. and now they are watching you.

  171. And the idea is

  172. if God enabled these people

  173. to be successful,

  174. he'll do the same for me.

  175. Let me ask you guys,

  176. would it make a difference

  177. in how you practiced tomorrow

  178. if somehow or another

  179. last year's Clemson

  180. national championship team,

  181. Kane,

  182. circled the field

  183. and they watched you?

  184. I bet there'd be less loafing.

  185. I bet there'd be more people

  186. just sucking it up

  187. and not talking about

  188. something hurting.

  189. You would do the best

  190. you've ever done

  191. because you know

  192. those guys are there

  193. and they know all about it.

  194. They have practiced

  195. and played

  196. in a lot more difficult circumstances

  197. than I have,

  198. longer than I have.

  199. they've endured the pain,

  200. the suffering

  201. that you do in practice

  202. and they've been successful.

  203. They won the national championship.

  204. Same thing

  205. if South Carolina's

  206. women's basketball team

  207. came and watched you

  208. who are on Pickens High School's

  209. women's basketball team.

  210. If North Carolina's players

  211. came to the guys' practice

  212. in basketball,

  213. you would sit up

  214. and take notice.

  215. You would do your best

  216. because that great cloud

  217. that's watching you,

  218. they've been there,

  219. they've done that,

  220. they've been successful

  221. and so you want to

  222. be successful

  223. in their eyes

  224. as well.

  225. No matter what kind

  226. of hardships

  227. we experience

  228. as we seek to live

  229. an obedient Christian life,

  230. we can always be certain

  231. that there's a lot of people

  232. who've gone before us,

  233. not just in the Old Testament,

  234. maybe some of your parents

  235. or grandparents

  236. or somebody you just

  237. admired in your church

  238. in a day gone by,

  239. they had a hard life

  240. but they never quit,

  241. they never gave up,

  242. they never blamed God

  243. for what was going on.

  244. They persevered,

  245. they were faithful

  246. and if you can look at them

  247. for some inspiration,

  248. that's what this writer's

  249. trying to say to us.

  250. No matter what we go through,

  251. others have been through worse.

  252. For example,

  253. back in chapter 11,

  254. Abraham was called

  255. to leave his home,

  256. his family

  257. and everything he ever had

  258. and go to a place

  259. that he didn't know

  260. where he was going to go

  261. and it says in chapter 11

  262. that Abraham was sent

  263. to a place

  264. where he lived in tents

  265. and the idea is

  266. he never had a home.

  267. God's call

  268. to Abraham's life

  269. was you leave home,

  270. you leave security,

  271. you leave everything

  272. you've ever known

  273. and I'm going to send you

  274. to a place

  275. and you're never going

  276. to have anything.

  277. You're always going

  278. to be an alien

  279. in that place.

  280. But that's my plan

  281. for you.

  282. It was costly.

  283. Moses,

  284. look back in chapter 11,

  285. Moses actually grew up

  286. in a place of privilege.

  287. He was the adopted grandson

  288. of Pharaoh,

  289. the king of Egypt.

  290. But it tells us

  291. in that passage

  292. that Moses gave all that up.

  293. He renounced

  294. that place of position,

  295. that life of ease

  296. in order to identify

  297. with his own people,

  298. the Hebrew people

  299. who were slaves

  300. and eventually

  301. God used him

  302. to lead them out

  303. of slavery

  304. into the promised land.

  305. The point is

  306. there's people

  307. around us,

  308. some in the Bible,

  309. some you know.

  310. They've been faithful.

  311. They were successful

  312. in doing what God

  313. called them to do

  314. because they were faithful.

  315. These in the Old Testament,

  316. Abraham and Moses

  317. for example.

  318. It's been thousands

  319. of years

  320. since they walked

  321. the face of this earth

  322. but we're talking

  323. about them this morning.

  324. they are remembered.

  325. And one day,

  326. every Christian

  327. in this room,

  328. you will actually see

  329. those men and women

  330. listed in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  331. You'll get to talk to them

  332. and hear their stories

  333. firsthand

  334. about how life was hard

  335. but God gave me

  336. what I needed

  337. and I was able

  338. to be faithful.

  339. That's why they're in

  340. what some people call

  341. the hall of faith

  342. there in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  343. The next thing

  344. I want us to look at

  345. is also in verse 1.

  346. As important as it is

  347. to look around

  348. and find some inspiration

  349. from people

  350. who've been there

  351. and done that,

  352. it's more important now

  353. to understand

  354. if we're going to run

  355. this race of Christian living

  356. and be successful,

  357. we've got to be

  358. personally disciplined.

  359. Look at it.

  360. We must discipline ourselves

  361. if we want to run well.

  362. Every successful runner,

  363. that's what he's talking

  364. about here,

  365. a track athlete.

  366. Every successful runner

  367. must train for their race.

  368. Every successful athlete

  369. must train,

  370. must discipline themselves.

  371. Well, that also applies

  372. to living a faithful

  373. and obedient Christian life.

  374. Notice what it involves

  375. in verse 1.

  376. He says,

  377. we must lay aside

  378. every weight.

  379. Another way to translate that

  380. is or throw off

  381. everything that hinders.

  382. That literally refers

  383. to the bulk of the body.

  384. Eliminate excess pounds

  385. is what he's talking about.

  386. Olympic runners,

  387. they don't carry

  388. any extra weight.

  389. They have any extra fat.

  390. Their skin, bone, and muscle.

  391. You think what it takes

  392. to be that.

  393. Think up of the discipline

  394. in what you eat

  395. and how you work out,

  396. how you even rest.

  397. I want you to think

  398. and make this real personal now.

  399. What hinders you?

  400. What causes you sometimes

  401. to fall

  402. as you seek to live

  403. a faithful Christian life?

  404. We're not talking about

  405. sinful things yet.

  406. It doesn't have to be

  407. anything bad.

  408. But we who are Christians,

  409. we want to,

  410. we want to be faithful.

  411. We want to know God's will.

  412. We want to do God's will.

  413. We want to do what we know

  414. God wants us to do.

  415. But we don't

  416. a lot of times.

  417. We let things,

  418. we let people,

  419. we let a lot of things

  420. sort of pull us down.

  421. And this writer is saying here,

  422. in writing to these people,

  423. writing to us today,

  424. let us also lay aside

  425. every weight.

  426. What's weighing

  427. or pulling you down?

  428. It could be something good,

  429. but it's not good

  430. in what it's doing to you.

  431. For example,

  432. it could be a hobby

  433. that takes too much

  434. of your time.

  435. It could be a particular person

  436. that's in your life,

  437. and they're just a bad influence.

  438. They make you worse,

  439. not better.

  440. This is sort of an aside now.

  441. When you're dating someone,

  442. when you're looking for someone

  443. you really want to get serious about,

  444. you think about marrying,

  445. ask yourself the question,

  446. am I a better person

  447. by being around them,

  448. by being influenced by them?

  449. Are they helping,

  450. if you're a Christian,

  451. are they helping me to walk

  452. and follow Christ?

  453. Or,

  454. do they pull me down?

  455. Could be the kind of music

  456. you listen to,

  457. the movies,

  458. TV shows you watch,

  459. that for you,

  460. it just,

  461. you don't have the right

  462. kind of thoughts.

  463. It just doesn't affect you

  464. in a positive way.

  465. Anything that drags us down

  466. spiritually is a hindrance

  467. that we've got to get rid of.

  468. You know,

  469. a lot of Christians say

  470. they don't have time

  471. to spend with the Lord

  472. in prayer and Bible reading.

  473. Fact is,

  474. no one,

  475. me,

  476. you,

  477. no one in this room,

  478. no one you know

  479. can live a faithful Christian life

  480. without having a real relationship

  481. with God.

  482. And the only way

  483. we can have a relationship

  484. with Him

  485. or anyone

  486. is to spend time with Him,

  487. talking to Him in prayer,

  488. listening to Him

  489. as He speaks

  490. from His Word.

  491. A lot of people say,

  492. I know that's true,

  493. but I just don't have the time

  494. to do that

  495. on a daily basis.

  496. Let me ask you this.

  497. Do you have time

  498. for Facebook

  499. and other forms

  500. of social media?

  501. If you do,

  502. then your problem

  503. about the Bible

  504. and prayer

  505. is not a time problem.

  506. It's a priority problem.

  507. And I'm saying this

  508. because today,

  509. social media,

  510. it can be a great thing,

  511. it can be a positive thing,

  512. form of communication,

  513. smartphones,

  514. you can learn a lot,

  515. it's a lot of good

  516. that can come from it,

  517. but social media

  518. is a weight

  519. that is hindering

  520. many people's

  521. relationship with God

  522. and their actual

  523. real relationships

  524. with other people.

  525. The main reason

  526. I'm bringing this one up

  527. as an example today,

  528. some of you saw this

  529. toward the end

  530. of last week.

  531. There was a house fire

  532. in Anderson County.

  533. Three people were inside.

  534. They got out,

  535. but a 22-year-old man

  536. went back inside

  537. to retrieve his cell phone.

  538. And he didn't make it back out.

  539. He died.

  540. He died.

  541. He died

  542. for a stupid cell phone.

  543. He was that addicted.

  544. It was that much

  545. of his life.

  546. I talked to someone

  547. after the first service

  548. this morning,

  549. after preaching this message.

  550. And they were telling me

  551. about a situation

  552. where a person

  553. was going to have to

  554. do a particular thing.

  555. I don't want to give it away.

  556. A person told me

  557. they were going to have

  558. to be doing something.

  559. And they were instructed

  560. in order to do this test,

  561. do this thing

  562. you've got to do,

  563. you cannot have a cell phone.

  564. You must leave it at home.

  565. Leave it with your parents.

  566. Leave it somewhere.

  567. And this person said,

  568. I can't do that.

  569. I cannot go anywhere

  570. in this world

  571. without my cell phone.

  572. My cell phone

  573. is my lifeline.

  574. That's an addiction, folks.

  575. A smartphone can be a tool

  576. or it can be an addiction

  577. that is interfering

  578. in your own relationship

  579. with the Lord

  580. and your relationship

  581. with other human beings.

  582. It's been a long time

  583. since I dated.

  584. But I can tell you this.

  585. If I went out with a girl

  586. and we sat down at a meal

  587. ordered,

  588. looking at the menu

  589. and she whips out that phone,

  590. I'm leaving.

  591. You can do what you want to.

  592. I didn't come to talk to you.

  593. I didn't come to look at you

  594. with your face down

  595. in that stupid phone.

  596. I challenge you guys,

  597. do that.

  598. Do that.

  599. Leave them.

  600. Tell them to take that phone

  601. and call their mom and daddy

  602. to come get them.

  603. But let's reverse it now.

  604. I believe in equality.

  605. Ladies,

  606. if you go out with a guy,

  607. he's got his face in that,

  608. sneak out if you can

  609. before he even looks up.

  610. Don't let him hear you.

  611. Just don't say a word.

  612. Go out and call somebody

  613. to come and get you.

  614. I'm making a lot of this

  615. because it is a serious problem

  616. that's interfering

  617. in people's actual human interaction

  618. and it is interfering

  619. in a lot of people's relationship

  620. with the Lord

  621. because they've got time for this

  622. but they don't have time for Him.

  623. It is a hindrance

  624. to a lot of people's spiritual growth

  625. and a lot of people's social,

  626. real growth

  627. with other people face to face.

  628. We also see in verse 1

  629. that we must discipline ourselves

  630. to throw off the sin

  631. which clings so closely

  632. or the sin that so easily entangles

  633. or the New Living Translation says

  634. the sin that so easily trips us up.

  635. The idea here is

  636. of a runner stripping off

  637. as the Greek runners would do

  638. so that there would be nothing

  639. to hinder them in any way,

  640. to slow them down a step.

  641. Obviously all sin causes us to fall.

  642. Which sins do you find

  643. or you're a real stumbling block?

  644. And we all have them.

  645. Every one of us,

  646. the most committed Christian in here,

  647. there's certain sins

  648. that appeal to you more than others.

  649. There's certain ways you are tempted.

  650. And I want you to stop for a moment now

  651. and identify what sin

  652. or sins is tripping you up.

  653. Is it interfering

  654. in your running this race

  655. of faithful Christian living?

  656. Could it be gossip?

  657. Anger?

  658. Impatience?

  659. Lust?

  660. Lying?

  661. Laziness?

  662. Alcohol or drug abuse?

  663. Just not trusting God

  664. in the details of your life.

  665. Whatever your particular sin is,

  666. you know what it is.

  667. It's tripping you up.

  668. It's causing you to fall

  669. more times than you want to admit.

  670. If you're serious about

  671. wanting to be faithful to God

  672. and live the kind of life

  673. He's calling you to live,

  674. if you're serious about it,

  675. you've got to get rid of the things

  676. that are hindering you.

  677. You've got to confess

  678. and turn from the sin

  679. that's tripping you up.

  680. You can do that

  681. and God will forgive you.

  682. He'll give you a fresh start

  683. if there's a problem right now

  684. that you're dealing with.

  685. 1 John chapter 1 and verse 9

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  686. tells us this.

  687. If we confess our sins,

  688. He is faithful and just

  689. to forgive us of our sins

  690. and to cleanse us

  691. from all unrighteousness.

  692. God forgives.

  693. God is a God of grace.

  694. And if we'll be honest with Him

  695. about what our problem is,

  696. what our sin is,

  697. truly confess it,

  698. turn from it,

  699. change your mind about it,

  700. hate it,

  701. and seek His forgiveness,

  702. He will forgive us

  703. just like that verse is saying.

  704. It's a promise.

  705. It's a promise.

  706. What is it that,

  707. what is it that really

  708. you are battling

  709. is a temptation in your life.

  710. I want you to understand

  711. no matter how powerful,

  712. how strong it may be

  713. in some temptations,

  714. sort of like sometimes

  715. they just grab us,

  716. shake us,

  717. demand that we give in.

  718. But we don't have to.

  719. God always provides

  720. a way of escape

  721. if we want it,

  722. if we'll look for it.

  723. I want you to look at

  724. what Paul said

  725. to the Corinthians

  726. about temptation.

  727. No temptation

  728. has overtaken you

  729. that is not common to man.

  730. You've experienced,

  731. I've experienced

  732. no unique temptation.

  733. God is faithful.

  734. He will not let you

  735. be tempted

  736. beyond your ability,

  737. but with the temptation

  738. He will also provide

  739. the way of escape

  740. that you may be able

  741. to endure it.

  742. We can endure temptation.

  743. We can resist it.

  744. We can overcome it.

  745. God always provides

  746. a way of escape

  747. if we'll look for it,

  748. if we'll take it.

  749. Notice one other aspect

  750. of discipline found

  751. in verse 1.

  752. He talks about running

  753. with endurance.

  754. The runner's got to have

  755. the attitude,

  756. I'm going to finish.

  757. I'm going to complete

  758. the race.

  759. It doesn't matter

  760. how good a start he gets.

  761. In this analogy here,

  762. a long distance runner

  763. on the track,

  764. say it's 5,000 meters.

  765. That's what?

  766. About 12 and a half laps.

  767. It doesn't matter

  768. how strong he starts,

  769. how, if he even laps

  770. the field,

  771. the first few,

  772. if he quits

  773. in the 11th lap,

  774. he won't finish.

  775. He has no possibility

  776. to win.

  777. You've got to finish.

  778. You've got to stay the course

  779. is what he's saying.

  780. This is true

  781. in our relationship

  782. with Christ.

  783. There's a lot of people,

  784. a lot of people,

  785. as children,

  786. as teenagers,

  787. even as adults,

  788. they make a profession

  789. of faith.

  790. They may even be baptized.

  791. But they don't continue

  792. to trust Christ,

  793. to follow Christ.

  794. I want you to understand

  795. that is an indication

  796. that a person

  797. wasn't really a Christian

  798. to start with.

  799. Because when God

  800. really and truly

  801. does a work in us

  802. to save us,

  803. he changes us,

  804. he puts his spirit

  805. in us,

  806. and God will never

  807. leave us alone.

  808. Look at how Paul

  809. describes this

  810. in Philippians 1,

    Philippians 1:6

  811. verse 6.

  812. And I am sure of this,

  813. that he who began

  814. a good work in you

  815. will bring it to completion

  816. at the day of Christ Jesus.

  817. What God starts in us,

  818. he's going to continue.

  819. There may be times

  820. that we fail him,

  821. as we're talking

  822. about how I go,

  823. that we fall.

  824. We give in

  825. to the temptation.

  826. But if the spirit

  827. of God lives within us,

  828. he will convict us,

  829. he'll cause us

  830. to want to confess

  831. our sin,

  832. to come back

  833. to the Lord

  834. and start all over again.

  835. I want you to look

  836. at something else

  837. Paul said.

  838. It's not easy

  839. to live a Christian life.

  840. If anybody ever

  841. tells you it is,

  842. they don't know

  843. what they're talking about.

  844. There's a lot of verses

  845. I showed you

  846. at the beginning.

  847. We're looking at one here.

  848. The Christian life

  849. requires discipline.

  850. It requires self-control.

  851. We have to work at it.

  852. It's not going

  853. to just happen.

  854. But I want you

  855. to see how

  856. we can be confident

  857. that we can work at it.

  858. Look at what he says

  859. in Philippians 2.13.

  860. For it is God

  861. who works in you

  862. both to will

  863. and to work

  864. for his good pleasure.

  865. When God saves us,

  866. he puts his spirit in us

  867. and he will never leave us.

  868. God will give us

  869. the desire

  870. to be faithful,

  871. to resist temptation,

  872. to obey him.

  873. God will enable us

  874. to do that,

  875. but we've got to

  876. cooperate with him.

  877. We've got to eliminate

  878. the hindrances.

  879. We've got to turn

  880. from the sin.

  881. We've got to do

  882. the acts of obedience

  883. that he calls us to do.

  884. You may have to

  885. close your mouth.

  886. He's telling you

  887. to quit saying things

  888. you're saying

  889. that you're not

  890. supposed to say.

  891. You may have to

  892. open your mouth

  893. and say some things

  894. he's wanting you

  895. to say to certain people.

  896. God will enable us

  897. to be faithful.

  898. He will enable us

  899. to discipline ourselves

  900. and stay the course.

  901. Let's look at

  902. one more thing.

  903. One more thing

  904. about being faithful.

  905. We must stay focused

  906. on our goal

  907. as we run.

  908. The Olympic runner

  909. runs with his eyes

  910. fixed ahead of him

  911. on the goal,

  912. on the finish line.

  913. He may be aware

  914. of people in the stands,

  915. but he's not looking.

  916. He may be aware

  917. of other runners.

  918. He can sort of

  919. sense their presence,

  920. maybe see them

  921. out of the side

  922. of his eye.

  923. But he's not going

  924. to be turning

  925. and always just

  926. looking around.

  927. He's going to be

  928. focused on his goal.

  929. His goal is going

  930. to be the finish line.

  931. What this writer

  932. is telling us

  933. is we need to run

  934. with a clear focus

  935. and our focus

  936. is simple.

  937. It's Jesus himself.

  938. Why would he say this?

  939. Because of who he is.

  940. Look at what it says.

  941. Verse 2,

  942. looking to Jesus,

  943. the founder

  944. and perfecter

  945. of our faith.

  946. Everything in the

  947. Christian life,

  948. everything in the

  949. Christian faith

  950. begins, continues,

  951. and ends

  952. with Jesus.

  953. Specifically,

  954. his death

  955. on the cross

  956. for our sins.

  957. See,

  958. when Jesus

  959. died on the cross,

  960. he died

  961. in your place.

  962. He died

  963. to pay the penalty

  964. for my sins.

  965. It's like God

  966. took my sin

  967. and placed it on Jesus

  968. as he hung on the cross

  969. and Jesus cried out,

  970. my God, my God,

  971. why have you forsaken me?

  972. God had turned away

  973. from him in that moment

  974. and it's because

  975. he was bearing

  976. the full weight

  977. of our sin

  978. and experiencing

  979. the pain of hell,

  980. not going to the place,

  981. but experiencing

  982. the pain of hell

  983. because God

  984. was turning away from him.

  985. He was experiencing

  986. the wrath of God.

  987. He died for our sins.

  988. Just before he died,

  989. one of the last things

  990. he says was,

  991. it is finished.

  992. The penalty for sin

  993. had been paid.

  994. He was buried.

  995. Three days later,

  996. he arose from the grave

  997. because God

  998. wanted everybody

  999. to understand,

  1000. I've accepted

  1001. his sacrifice.

1002. He arose from the grave

  1003. and was seen

  1004. over a period

  1005. of 40 days

1006. by a lot of different people,

  1007. different places.

  1008. That was God's way

  1009. of verifying.

  1010. My son,

1011. he's died on the cross,

  1012. paid the penalty

  1013. for your sins.

1014. He's risen from the grave.

  1015. He is my son.

1016. He is the son of God.

  1017. The penalty's been paid.

  1018. And the good news

  1019. of the gospel is

1020. if we will admit our sin,

1021. put our trust in Jesus,

  1022. call upon him

  1023. to save us,

  1024. he will.

  1025. Now in keeping

  1026. with this race imagery,

  1027. think about Jesus.

  1028. He has cleared

  1029. the path

1030. that we need to run

1031. to stay in our lane

  1032. and be faithful

1033. in the race of life.

1034. Because of what he's done,

  1035. look at it,

  1036. he endured the cross

  1037. despising the shame

  1038. and is seated

  1039. at the right hand

1040. of the throne of God.

1041. The cross was the lowest

  1042. form of execution

  1043. in the Roman Empire.

  1044. In the Roman Empire,

  1045. only slaves

  1046. and criminals

  1047. were crucified.

  1048. A Roman citizen

  1049. could not be executed

  1050. that way.

  1051. It was a torturous,

  1052. humiliating way to die.

  1053. But Jesus endured that.

  1054. He disregarded the shame

  1055. because he was fulfilling

  1056. the plan of God.

  1057. He was fulfilling

  1058. the way for us

  1059. to be forgiven

1060. and made right with God.

  1061. He did that,

1062. it says in verse 2,

  1063. for the joy

  1064. that was set

  1065. before him.

  1066. He looked beyond

  1067. everything,

  1068. everything that was

  1069. terrible about that cross

  1070. for the joy

  1071. on the other side.

1072. I know that you guys

  1073. playing ball

  1074. practices,

  1075. a lot of times,

  1076. it's just awful.

  1077. Sometimes you just think

  1078. the coaches,

  1079. they got their training

  1080. in a torture chamber,

  1081. all the things

  1082. they make us do.

1083. But you hang in there.

1084. You do what you've got to do

1085. because you want to play

  1086. on Friday night.

  1087. You want to wear

  1088. that uniform.

1089. You want to go out

1090. in front of all the people

  1091. that's going to be

  1092. in those stands.

1093. And you want to play football

  1094. in that game

  1095. so you endure

1096. whatever it has to do.

  1097. There is joy

  1098. before you

  1099. on the other side

  1100. of practice.

  1101. There was joy

  1102. on the other side

  1103. of the cross

  1104. for Jesus.

  1105. That's why

  1106. he endured that.

  1107. That's our example

  1108. for enduring pain

  1109. and hardship,

1110. suffering for the short time

  1111. because we're going

  1112. to experience

  1113. an eternal reward

  1114. waiting for us

  1115. at the end.

  1116. You know,

1117. we're never going to live

  1118. a faithful life

  1119. that honors God

  1120. and brings joy

  1121. and satisfaction

  1122. to ourselves

  1123. if we just focus

  1124. on the circumstances

  1125. of today.

  1126. If we just focus

  1127. on how life bad

  1128. is at various times.

  1129. we've got to learn

  1130. to follow the example

  1131. of Jesus

  1132. and look beyond

  1133. our circumstances.

  1134. Look beyond

  1135. how we feel

  1136. and just think about

  1137. what God,

1138. how God will reward us

  1139. for being faithful

  1140. as his son

  1141. or daughter.

  1142. That's the attitude

  1143. we've got to have

  1144. in order to endure

  1145. throughout this race

  1146. of life,

  1147. of Christian living.

  1148. And I encourage you

  1149. to look beyond

  1150. the hardship,

  1151. those of you

  1152. who are going

  1153. through hardship.

  1154. There is more,

  1155. there is better

  1156. to come

  1157. and it'll be yours

  1158. for all eternity.

1159. If we want to live

  1160. faithful Christian lives

  1161. and please God,

1162. we need to look around

  1163. and see

  1164. success stories.

1165. Look at some of the people

  1166. in the Bible.

  1167. Hopefully there's some people

  1168. in your life

  1169. who've been before you,

  1170. they've been faithful

  1171. and God is blessed

  1172. in their life.

  1173. Be inspired by that.

  1174. But inspiration

1175. is just going to carry you

  1176. so far.

  1177. In order to really

  1178. and truly live

  1179. the Christian life

1180. as God's called you to do

  1181. and deep down

  1182. you want to do

  1183. if you're a Christian,

  1184. you've got to learn

  1185. to discipline yourself,

  1186. to eliminate hindrances

  1187. and distractions

1188. and any form of sin

  1189. in your life.

  1190. Take the responsibility

  1191. to discipline yourself,

  1192. to cooperate with God

  1193. as He works

  1194. to change you

  1195. and enable you

  1196. to develop

  1197. Christ-like character.

1198. If we'll run the race

  1199. of Christian living

  1200. like this,

  1201. we can be faithful.

  1202. It doesn't mean

  1203. it'll be easy.

  1204. It doesn't mean

  1205. that everything will happen

1206. the way you want it

1207. to happen in your life.

  1208. But faithfulness

  1209. is what pleases God.

  1210. Faithfulness

  1211. is how God

  1212. determines success.

  1213. Faithfulness

  1214. is what makes us

  1215. in this race

  1216. of Christian living

  1217. victorious.

  1218. Faithfulness

  1219. by God's grace

1220. is what will enable us

  1221. to experience

  1222. an eternal reward

1223. at the end of this race.

  1224. let's pray together.

  1225. Dear God,

  1226. help us to see

  1227. right now

  1228. how we should respond

  1229. in light of what

  1230. you've said

  1231. through your word

  1232. and through your spirit

  1233. to us individually.

  1234. Father,

  1235. if there are people

  1236. in this room

  1237. who are not Christians,

1238. but they want to be,

  1239. dear God,

1240. make it clear to them

  1241. that if they will

  1242. admit their sin

1243. and truly turn from it,

  1244. change their mind

  1245. about how they're living

  1246. and put their trust

  1247. in Jesus

  1248. that He has taken

  1249. their punishment,

  1250. He paid the penalty

  1251. for their sin

1252. when He died on the cross.

  1253. Help that person

  1254. right now,

  1255. dear God,

  1256. to call upon Jesus

  1257. to save them.

  1258. Help that man,

  1259. woman,

  1260. young person

  1261. to surrender control

  1262. of their lives

  1263. right now

  1264. to Jesus

  1265. as their Lord,

  1266. as their ultimate leader.

  1267. Father,

  1268. if there are Christians

  1269. in this room

  1270. right now,

  1271. you have identified

  1272. things that are

  1273. hindering them

  1274. from faithfully

  1275. living the life

  1276. that God's called

  1277. them to live.

  1278. Dear God,

  1279. show them

1280. what they need to do.

  1281. If there's sin

  1282. to confess,

  1283. if there are priorities

  1284. to rearrange,

  1285. if there are some

  1286. changes in their lifestyle,

  1287. in their relationships

1288. that need to be made,

  1289. make it clear.

  1290. Help them,

  1291. dear God,

  1292. to make that kind

  1293. of commitment.

  1294. Not just right now,

  1295. but every day.

  1296. In an attitude

  1297. of prayer,

  1298. let's just all

  1299. listen to the Lord

  1300. and respond to Him.

  1301. If I could pray

1302. with you during this time,

  1303. I'll be here

  1304. at the front

  1305. and would be happy

  1306. to do that.

  1307. Thank you.
