  1. As we actually observe the elements of the Lord's Supper,

  2. the first that will be distributed is the bread.

  3. The bread represents the broken body of Jesus.

  4. I don't know if you've ever read it, thought about it,

  5. but one of the best descriptions of the suffering

  6. that Jesus experienced on the cross

  7. is found in the Old Testament.

  8. Before Jesus ever walked the face of this earth,

  9. the prophet Isaiah described the suffering

  10. that a future servant of God would experience on behalf of others.

  11. Jesus, in His own teaching, identified Himself as that suffering servant,

  12. but other New Testament writers clearly point to Him in that same way.

  13. Isaiah chapter 52, beginning in verse 13,

    Isaiah 52 chapter mention

  14. through chapter 53, verse 12,

  15. these are the verses that provide the most detailed description

  16. of the Lord's suffering.

  17. It's from these verses, this section,

  18. that the New Testament quotes more than any other passage.

  19. Isaiah 52, 13 through 53, 12.

  20. The New Testament quotes from these verses

  21. more than any other Old Testament text.

  22. John MacArthur explains the significance of this passage very well.

  23. I want you to look at it.

  24. It's going to be on the screen.

  25. How he points to this from Isaiah

  26. is what Jesus did for us.

  27. Look at it.

  28. This section contains unarguable, incontrovertible proof

  29. that God is the author of Scripture

  30. and Jesus is the fulfillment of Messianic prophecy.

  31. The details are so minute

  32. that no human could have predicted them by accident.

  33. Clearly, this refers to the Messiah, Jesus,

  34. as the New Testament attests.

  35. Then you note he cites all these New Testament references,

  36. both Jesus and some of the apostles.

  37. They quote from Isaiah 52, 13 through 53, 12,

  38. describing what Jesus did to his death for our sins.

  39. MacArthur goes on to say,

  40. it is often alluded to without being quoted.

  41. And he cites other passages.

  42. The ESV study Bible

  43. calls three verses from this section in particular

  44. the heart of the passage.

  45. And it's referring to Isaiah 53, verses 4 through 6.

    Isaiah 53:4–6

  46. I want you to look at this and think.

  47. Isaiah wrote about this hundreds of years

  48. before Jesus actually came into the world,

  49. went to the cross and experienced this kind of death.

  50. Look at it.

  51. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

  52. Yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.

  53. But he was pierced for our transgressions.

  54. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  55. Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace.

  56. And with his wounds we are healed.

  57. All we like sheep have gone astray.

  58. We have turned everyone to his own way.

  59. And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

  60. Now I want you to note in verse 5 there

  61. words that describe the pain and suffering

  62. that Jesus experienced on the cross.

  63. Pierced, crushed, chastisement or punishment, wounds.

  64. But notice also, I'm going to list them in the next slide.

  65. Notice why Jesus suffered that way.

  66. He was pierced for our transgressions.

  67. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  68. Upon him was the chastisement or the punishment that brought us peace.

  69. With his wounds we are healed.

  70. When Jesus died on the cross,

  71. he suffered because he was bearing our sins upon himself.

  72. Look again how verse 6 describes this.

  73. All we like sheep have gone astray.

  74. We have turned everyone to his own way.

  75. That's one way to describe sin.

  76. Living life my way instead of God's way.

  77. Doing what I want to do.

  78. Doing my will instead of doing God's will.

  79. That's the essence of sin.

  80. All we like sheep have gone astray.

  81. We have turned everyone to his own way.

  82. And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

  83. This Isaiah 53, 4 through 6.

  84. This is good news for every person who truly does trust in Jesus as their Savior and Lord.

  85. Think about it.

  86. Make it personal.

  87. This is telling us that God placed your sin upon Jesus as he hung on the cross.

  88. This passage is telling us Jesus suffered the punishment that you rightly deserve

  89. because you are the one who sinned.

  90. You're the one who wanted it your way and rebelled against God.

  91. But God acted not according to what we deserve.

  92. God acted in mercy.

  93. God acted in grace by sending Jesus and allowing him to suffer the punishment that we rightly deserve.

  94. Now if you're not a Christian, you need to understand that you're responsible to God for yourself.

  95. You're all alone before God.

  96. You will give an account to him for how you've lived.

  97. You will give an account for every sin you have or will commit.

  98. If you're not a Christian, if you're not united to Jesus Christ by faith,

  99. you are going to bear God's punishment for your sin.

  100. You are going to.

  101. And really that is what hell is.

  102. Being separated from God, experiencing the punishment,

  103. that sin deserves.

  104. Now, what I want to say to you if you're not a Christian,

  105. that doesn't have to be your story.

  106. That doesn't have to be the end result of your life.

  107. Right now, you can't admit to God your need for this Savior.

  108. And not just admit your sin, but change your mind about the way you're living.

  109. Turn from your sin.

  110. Truly express your sorrow to God for living life your way instead of His.

  111. If you will turn and put your faith and trust in Jesus,

  112. that He suffered your punishment for you,

  113. and call upon Him to save you,

  114. He will.

  115. So I encourage you, if you're not a believer,

  116. if you came into this room not knowing Christ as your Lord and Savior,

  117. turn to Him now in faith, in trust, in confidence.

  118. Commit your life to Him.

  119. He will save you.

  120. He will forgive you.

  121. He will make you a child of God right now, this very moment.

  122. But you know, the good news of Jesus Christ,

  123. it does not end with Him dying on the cross.

  124. God raised Him from the dead.

  125. We serve, we worship a living Lord this morning.

  126. When we talk about Jesus,

  127. we're not talking about Jesus,

  128. the Son of God who died and was buried and that was it.

  129. We wouldn't be here to worship Him.

  130. He would just be like everyone else if that's the case.

  131. We are here this morning because we're worshiping the Son of God

  132. who came into this world and did die.

  133. He was buried,

  134. but He arose triumphantly from the grave.

  135. God made it clear through the resurrection of His Son Jesus

  136. that He has accepted the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf.

  137. God has accepted that.

  138. Through faith in Jesus,

  139. we're forgiven,

  140. we're made children of God.

  141. And I want to encourage you,

  142. if you're a Christian now,

  143. thank God.

  144. Thank Him for the grace that He has shown you.

  145. Thank the Lord Jesus Himself

  146. for the love that He demonstrated

  147. in going to the cross,

  148. taking your punishment

  149. so that you would not have to.

  150. I want to encourage you

  151. to renew

  152. or reaffirm your commitment

  153. to Jesus Christ right now

  154. as we prepare to partake of

  155. this first element of the Lord's Supper,

  156. the bread.

  157. I want to read from what Paul writes in 1 Corinthians,

  158. explaining to us how Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper.

  159. He writes,

  160. for I received from the Lord

  161. what I also delivered to you,

  162. that the Lord Jesus,

  163. on the night when He was betrayed,

  164. took bread,

  165. and when He had given thanks,

  166. He broke it and said,

  167. this is my body,

  168. which is for you.

  169. Let's pray together.

  170. Let's pray together.

  171. Thank you.

  172. Thank you.

  173. Find forgiveness at the cross.

  174. So we share in this bread of life.

  175. And we drink of his sacrifice as a sign of our bonds of peace.

  176. Around the table of the King.

  177. The body of our Savior Jesus Christ torn for you.

  178. Eat and remember the wounds that heal the death that brings us life.

  179. Paid the price to make us one.

  180. So we share in this bread of life.

  181. And we drink of his sacrifice as a sign of our bonds of love.

  182. Around the table of the King.

  183. The blood that cleanses every stain of sin shed for you.

  184. Drink and remember.

  185. He drained this cup that all may enter in.

  186. To receive the life of God.

  187. So we share in this bread of life.

  188. And we drink of his sacrifice as a sign of our bonds of grace.

  189. Around the table of the King.

  190. Aleister food.

  191. yeuxquote imbent.

  192. Aleister food.

  193. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond.

  194. And to remember our call to follow in the steps of Christ

  195. As his body here on earth

  196. As we share in his suffering

  197. We proclaim Christ will come again

  198. And we'll join in the feast of heaven

  199. Around the table of the King

  200. Jesus told us to do this in remembrance of me

  201. The second element that is passed out

  202. Is the cup

  203. It represents the blood

  204. The shed blood of Jesus on the cross

  205. Many years ago

  206. I thought, wondered

  207. Why is it that when we take the Lord's Supper

  208. It's described, these elements are described as

  209. The bread and the cup

  210. Instead of the bread and the wine

  211. I used to think that it must be

  212. That was Baptist's way of trying to get around talking about wine

  213. You know

  214. But then if you actually read the scripture

  215. That's what Jesus said

  216. That's how the Apostle Paul

  217. Described the Lord's Supper

  218. Look at it

  219. 1 Corinthians 11 verses 25 and 26

    1 Corinthians 11:25

  220. In the same way

  221. Also

  222. He took the cup after supper saying

  223. This cup is the new covenant in my blood

  224. Do this as often as you drink it

  225. In remembrance of me

  226. For as often as you eat this bread

  227. And drink the cup

  228. You proclaim the Lord's death

  229. Until He comes

  230. Just look at that last verse

  231. Doesn't it sound sort of odd

  232. For as often as you eat this bread

  233. And drink the cup

  234. It just seems more natural to say

  235. For as often as you eat the bread

  236. And drink the wine

  237. Jesus was not trying to say something

  238. That would just be the most natural way to understand it

  239. He was making a point

  240. By emphasizing the bread and the cup

  241. Craig Blomberg is a respected New Testament scholar

  242. And I like the way he explains wine

  243. Look at it

  244. The reason Paul

  245. Like the gospel writers

  246. Call it the cup

  247. Rather than using the word wine

  248. Is because the expression

  249. Would evoke Old Testament associations

  250. Of suffering the cup

  251. Of God's wrath

  252. A.T. Robertson

  253. He's a Greek scholar

  254. From days gone by

  255. He's actually commenting

  256. What I'm giving you

  257. Comes from what Jesus said

  258. In Matthew 26

  259. As He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane

  260. Jesus said

  261. He's asking God

  262. If it be possible

  263. Let this cup pass from me

  264. Nevertheless not my will

  265. But your will be done

  266. Robertson said

  267. This cup

  268. The figure can only mean

  269. The approaching death

  270. The master is about to taste

  271. The bitter dregs

  272. In the cup of death

  273. For the sin of the world

  274. When Jesus instituted

  275. The Lord's Supper

  276. He used wine

  277. To symbolize

  278. His shed blood on the cross

  279. Which was another way

  280. Of Him describing His death

  281. But Jesus chose

  282. To focus on the cup

  283. Symbolizing that He would experience

  284. The wrath of God

  285. That we deserved

  286. Because of our sins

  287. Because of our sins

  288. If you're a Christian

  289. Let this sink in

  290. I do deserve

  291. To suffer

  292. For my sins

  293. But Jesus loved me enough

  294. To suffer for me

  295. To experience the wrath of God

  296. In my place

  297. So that I would not have to

  298. As we pass out

  299. The cups

  300. Express your love

  301. And your gratitude

  302. To God

  303. For this great grace

  304. Truly praise Jesus

  305. And thank Him

  306. For experiencing

  307. The cup of God's wrath

  308. So you wouldn't have to

  309. So you wouldn't have to

  310. In returning to what Paul is saying

  311. And how Jesus instituted

  312. The Lord's Supper

  313. Paul tells us

  314. In the same way

  315. Also He took the cup

  316. After supper

  317. Saying

  318. This cup

  319. Is the new covenant

  320. In my blood

  321. Let's pray together

  322. Are you

  323. They live alive

  324. In them

  325. They live

  326. Thank you.

  327. Thank you.

  328. Thank you.

  329. Christ is my reward

  330. in all of my devotion.

  331. Now there's nothing in this world

  332. that could ever satisfy.

  333. Through every trial my soul will sing.

  334. No turning back.

  335. I've been set free.

  336. Christ is enough for me.

  337. Christ is enough for me.

  338. Everything I need is in you.

  339. Everything I need.

  340. Christ is my all in all.

  341. The joy of my salvation.

  342. And this hope will never fail.

  343. Heaven is my home.

  344. Through every storm my soul will sing.

  345. Jesus is here.

  346. To God be the glory.

  347. Christ is enough for me.

  348. Christ is enough for me.

  349. Everything I need is in you.

  350. Everything I need.

  351. I have decided to follow Jesus.

  352. No turning back.

  353. No turning back.

  354. I have decided to follow Jesus.

  355. No turning back.

  356. No turning back.

  357. The cross before me.

  358. The world behind me.

  359. No turning back.

  360. No turning back.

  361. The cross before me.

  362. The world behind me.

  363. No turning back.

  364. No turning back.

  365. And Christ is enough for me.

  366. Christ is enough for me.

  367. Christ is enough for me.

  368. Everything I need is in you.

  369. Everything I need.

  370. I have decided to follow Jesus.

  371. No turning back.

  372. No turning back.

  373. I have decided to follow Jesus.

  374. No turning back.

  375. No turning back.

  376. The cross before me.

  377. The world behind me.

  378. No turning back.

  379. No turning back.

  380. The cross before me.

  381. The world behind me.

  382. No turning back.

  383. The cross before me.

  384. No turning back.

  385. No turning back.

  386. No turning back.

  387. No turning back.

  388. Jesus said to do this as often as you drink it

  389. in remembrance of me.

  390. Observing the Lord's Supper

  391. it's a visible reminder

  392. of what the Lord has done for us

  393. and it's also a time of

  394. experiencing His presence in a special way.

  395. It's also a time of committing ourselves

  396. anew and afresh to Him.

  397. Observing the Lord's Supper together

  398. is a time for us to do

  399. like that song has expressed.

  400. Keeping our eyes forward.

  401. Making that commitment.

  402. No matter what, I'm not going to turn back.

  403. Let that be your commitment this morning.

  404. Would you stand with us?

  405. We're going to close as Jesus and the disciples

  406. ended that Supper

  407. by singing a song together

  408. and we'll be dismissed.

  409. Amen.

  410. Amen.

  411. Amen.

  412. Amen.
