  1. Have you noticed how all the news headlines,

  2. they're just filled with hardship or uncertainty, for example.

  3. Can you imagine the hardship of all those who are trying to deal with the destruction of Hurricane Harvey?

  4. I mean, can you imagine what they're trying to do right now,

  5. all throughout Southeast Texas, Louisiana, throughout the path of Harvey?

  6. Then think about the uncertainty of Hurricane Irma.

  7. Right now, out in the Atlantic, not knowing really where it's going,

  8. where it's going or if it's going to strike the United States.

  9. Then there's the uncertainty of the North Koreans.

  10. What are they going to do?

  11. We have our own personal hardships and uncertainties right here in Pickens County

  12. and really right here in this room.

  13. Have you ever stopped and thought on any given Sunday when we gather in this service

  14. and in your Sunday school class?

  15. There are people who are dealing with serious health issues,

  16. their own or a close family member.

  17. At least every month, members of our church, people sitting in this room,

  18. are dealing with the grief from the death of a close family member or friend.

  19. There's always job uncertainties.

  20. Always some kind of family crisis, it seems.

  21. And then, if we're honest, from time to time, we come in this room,

  22. we have emotional and spiritual struggles that maybe no one knows about.

  23. So really, hardships and uncertainties, they're just a way of life.

  24. And that's real personal when it affects us, it doesn't.

  25. Well, what one word best describes the way most people deal with hardship and uncertainty?

  26. Wouldn't worry be that word?

  27. Or stress?

  28. Anxiety?

  29. It seems that some people, they think worry is their duty.

  30. I have a family member that over the years,

  31. after I've gotten over being sick or some kind of issue in my life,

  32. their response was, well, I was worried about you,

  33. as if that was supposed to comfort me.

  34. That was their way of helping me.

  35. I worried about you.

  36. We know that worry is one of the most common ways

  37. that people deal with problems,

  38. but it's not the way that God intends for us as His children

  39. to deal with our problems.

  40. We know that,

  41. but it doesn't always prevent us from worrying, does it?

  42. We struggle, just like everybody else.

  43. Things are going on in our lives,

  44. and we are at least tempted to worry,

  45. to get all stressed out.

  46. Over what is about to happen,

  47. or what we're involved in right now.

  48. Well, today I want us to take a refresher course.

  49. For most everybody in this room,

  50. it'll be a refresher course.

  51. In overcoming worry,

  52. a refresher course in what to do instead of worry,

  53. that the Apostle Paul provides for us

  54. in Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  55. If you would,

  56. turn to Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  57. and I want us to look together at two verses of Scripture,

  58. where Paul deals with this issue.

  59. Really, he confronts it head on,

  60. telling us that as God's people,

  61. we're not to worry.

  62. He gives us an antidote.

  63. He gives us what we should do in place of worry.

  64. And he tells us why we shouldn't worry,

  65. how God, if we'll respond the right way,

  66. how he will help us.

  67. That's what we're going to look at.

  68. Read with me,

  69. Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4:6

  70. verses 6 and 7,

  71. and keep your Bibles open the entire time,

  72. because we're just going to look at this back and forth.

  73. Philippians 4, beginning in verse 6.

  74. Do not be anxious about anything,

  75. or do not worry about anything,

  76. some translations will say.

  77. But in everything,

  78. by prayer and supplication,

  79. or prayer and petition,

  80. with thanksgiving,

  81. let your requests be made known to God.

  82. And the peace of God,

  83. which surpasses all understanding,

  84. which is beyond comprehension,

  85. some will say.

  86. The peace of God,

  87. which surpasses all understanding,

  88. will guard your hearts and minds

  89. in Christ Jesus.

  90. What we see here

  91. is Paul providing a better way,

  92. an alternative,

  93. to dealing with hardship

  94. and uncertainty in our life.

  95. And he first points out

  96. that worry is never the answer.

  97. Here's how he says it,

  98. very direct.

  99. Don't worry about anything.

  100. Do not be anxious about anything.

  101. Now I want you to understand,

  102. Paul did not write that

  103. from the comfort of his easy chair

  104. looking out over the ocean somewhere.

  105. Paul wrote,

  106. do not be anxious about anything

  107. from Rome,

  108. where he is under house arrest,

  109. at all times he is chained to a Roman soldier,

  110. and he is waiting on his court appearance

  111. before Caesar.

  112. Paul's under arrest,

  113. chained to a Roman soldier,

  114. as he dictates this letter.

  115. And he doesn't know,

  116. sooner or later,

  117. he's going to appear before Caesar,

  118. he doesn't know if he's going to be condemned to death,

  119. if he's going to be put in prison,

  120. or if he's going to be set free.

  121. There's a lot going on in his life

  122. that would make the normal person anxious.

  123. Paul's not the normal person,

  124. or he's not responding as the normal person would be.

  125. Paul tells us,

  126. do not be anxious about anything.

  127. Now,

  128. Paul understood how easy it would be

  129. to worry just like everybody else.

  130. I mean,

  131. he's just a real human being,

  132. a real man.

  133. If you read through the book of Acts

  134. about his travels,

  135. he faced all kinds of hardships,

  136. put in prison on several occasions,

  137. beaten at times,

  138. even beaten to the point

  139. he was left for dead on one occasion.

  140. There were times he didn't have enough to eat,

  141. times he was abandoned by his friends.

  142. If you read some of the things he writes

  143. of a personal nature in his letters,

  144. there's a lot of uncertainty

  145. about what's going to happen in the future.

  146. He wants to go to this place,

  147. but he doesn't know if God's going to let him or not.

  148. He's concerned about a church,

  149. and he hasn't heard from them.

  150. He's concerned about some of his friends.

  151. He doesn't know where they are.

  152. There's a lot of things in Paul's life

  153. that cause him to at least be tempted

  154. to be worried,

  155. to be all stressed out.

  156. And so, as he writes this,

  157. makes this statement,

  158. do not be anxious about anything.

  159. Paul is writing to Christians

  160. in the church at Philippi,

  161. but I really think,

  162. in light of all that's going on in his life,

  163. he's reminding himself as well.

  164. Don't be anxious about anything.

  165. Let's try to understand what Paul is talking about

  166. when he tells us not to worry.

  167. Now, we need to understand,

  168. worry is not the same thing as concern.

  169. When he says,

  170. do not be anxious about anything,

  171. he's not saying,

  172. don't care about anything.

  173. Nowhere in the Bible

  174. are we as Christians taught

  175. to be unconcerned

  176. about what's going on around about us.

  177. We are never called

  178. to try to distance ourselves

  179. from reality.

  180. We're never called to try to

  181. be unemotional,

  182. uninvolved,

  183. or unconcerned about

  184. what's going on in our life

  185. and in people around about us.

  186. I want you to think.

  187. Jesus rejoiced with people

  188. who were rejoicing

  189. and he wept with those

  190. who were weeping at times.

  191. There were times Jesus went to parties

  192. with his friends.

  193. There was one time in particular

  194. that most everyone knows.

  195. Every child knows

  196. the shortest verse in the Bible.

  197. Jesus wept.

  198. Well, he was weeping at the tomb

  199. of his friend Lazarus.

  200. Jesus got angry at times.

  201. Jesus was far from detached

  202. and unemotional,

  203. uninvolved in people's lives.

  204. Jesus was very much involved

  205. and concerned

  206. about what was going on.

  207. He laughed with people.

  208. He partied with people.

  209. He wept with people.

  210. He hurt with people.

  211. And he got angry a lot of times

  212. at the religious hypocrites

  213. and confronted them

  214. over some of the ways

  215. they were distorting

  216. the truth of God's word

  217. and some of the ways

  218. they were taking advantage

  219. of people they were supposed

  220. to be helping.

  221. Worry does not mean

  222. don't be concerned,

  223. don't care,

  224. don't be involved.

  225. Worry literally means

  226. to be divided,

  227. to be pulled apart.

  228. Jesus addressed

  229. the sin of worry

  230. in Matthew chapter 6

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  231. immediately after he had said

  232. no one can serve two masters.

  233. I want you to look at it.

  234. Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  235. and by the way,

  236. beginning in verse 25,

  237. Jesus gives a long statement

  238. about why we should not worry.

  239. He actually says it three times,

  240. do not worry.

  241. He compared people who worry

  242. with pagans,

  243. not people who are believers

  244. and know God

  245. as their heavenly father.

  246. But look at what it says

  247. in verse 24.

  248. No one can serve two masters,

  249. for either he will hate the one

  250. and love the other,

  251. or he will be devoted

  252. to the one

  253. and despise the other.

  254. You cannot serve God

  255. in money.

  256. But note the very next verse,

  257. therefore,

  258. I tell you,

  259. do not be anxious

  260. about your life.

  261. You cannot be divided,

  262. serve God in money,

  263. God in things.

  264. And you can't be divided

  265. in terms of where your trust is

  266. about the details of life.

  267. What he's talking about

  268. is we've got to have

  269. a single-minded devotion to God.

  270. We've got to really trust Him,

  271. seek His will above all things,

  272. and know that He's our heavenly Father.

  273. He can be depended on.

  274. He can be trusted.

  275. Worry is a sign

  276. that we don't trust God.

  277. Worry is,

  278. let me rephrase that,

  279. worry is a sign

  280. that we don't trust God

  281. completely.

  282. That we have a divided mind.

  283. When you're worried,

  284. when I'm worried,

  285. and there's times

  286. we give in to this temptation

  287. and we just get all stressed out,

  288. don't we?

  289. When we worry,

  290. we would not say,

  291. I absolutely do not trust God.

  292. If we were pinned down,

  293. I do trust God,

  294. but.

  295. I do trust God

  296. to take care of my children,

  297. but.

  298. I do trust that God's going to

  299. work things out

  300. in this situation with my job,

  301. but.

  302. When we worry,

  303. we trust God some,

  304. but not absolutely.

  305. We trust God some,

  306. but not enough

  307. to refrain from

  308. letting our emotions

  309. and imaginations

  310. run away with us.

  311. We trust God some,

  312. but not enough

  313. to not

  314. get all stressed out.

  315. Now,

  316. let's think for a moment.

  317. Does worry ever do any good?

  318. When you get stressed out,

  319. you're all anxious,

  320. you're all tied up in knots,

  321. you can't sleep,

  322. you can't eat.

  323. Does it do any good?

  324. Does it help the situation?

  325. Does it help you?

  326. Well,

  327. you know the answer.

  328. Worry is one of the most useless things

  329. that a person can do.

  330. It never changes anything.

  331. Jesus pointed that out

  332. in that Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  333. chapter,

  334. section,

  335. where he preached on,

  336. talked about worry.

  337. Look at it.

  338. In verse 27

  339. from the New Living Translation,

  340. he says,

  341. can all your worries

  342. at a single moment

  343. to your life,

  344. can all your worries

  345. do anything

  346. to change your situation?

  347. Can it change you?

  348. Now,

  349. worries can make you sick.

  350. Worried and you get all stressed out

  351. can have harmful effects,

  352. but never good effects.

  353. Now,

  354. one thing we need to be clear about,

  355. and I think most people

  356. would understand this,

  357. but for those who don't,

  358. when Paul tells us,

  359. do not be anxious about anything,

  360. he's not saying,

  361. well,

  362. don't do anything.

  363. He doesn't mean that

  364. if there's something you need to do,

  365. don't do it.

  366. If you're in a situation

  367. and you're worried

  368. or you're tempted to worry,

  369. but there's something you can do

  370. to change it,

  371. then you should do that.

  372. If you've got an,

  373. if you think you've got

  374. some kind of health problem right now,

  375. some things are going on

  376. in your body,

  377. with your body

  378. that you think's not right,

  379. and you're concerned,

  380. you're stressed out about it right now,

  381. instead of worrying about it,

  382. why don't you go to the doctor?

  383. That would make sense,

  384. wouldn't it?

  385. And I know we,

  386. as men,

  387. a lot of times,

  388. we ignore things,

  389. and, you know,

  390. a lot of guys just,

  391. just get sick

  392. because they wouldn't go to the doctor.

  393. That's not our finest moment,

  394. guys,

  395. when we know something's wrong,

  396. and we get all stressed out,

  397. we're tense,

  398. but we won't do anything about it.

  399. If you think your job is not stable,

  400. if there's a good likelihood

  401. that by the end of the year

  402. your company's gonna shut down,

  403. instead of you just getting

  404. all stressed out about it,

  405. why don't you start looking

  406. for something else?

  407. Why don't you get your resume together?

  408. Why don't you start asking around,

  409. looking around,

  410. and make,

  411. you know,

  412. find something else

  413. that you can do

  414. if it truly does

  415. break down or shut down?

  416. It's early in the school year,

  417. but some of you may be

  418. already getting stressed

  419. about your grades.

  420. Don't worry about it.

  421. Just study.

  422. Study.

  423. And don't pray those prayers

  424. like I used to pray.

  425. Lord, if you'll just get me

  426. through this test,

  427. I'll study better

  428. for the next one.

  429. Lord, if you'll just let me

  430. get through this semester,

  431. I'll never do that again.

  432. To be honest with you,

  433. I didn't intend for it

  434. to be this way,

  435. but those were just

  436. all lying prayers.

  437. Instead of making excuses,

  438. instead of getting all worked up,

  439. stressed out about it,

  440. I should have just studied.

  441. If there's something

  442. in your life

  443. that's giving you a problem,

  444. and it's just stressing you out,

  445. you're just all tied up about it,

  446. and there's something

  447. you can do,

  448. do it.

  449. But if you can't,

  450. don't stress out.

  451. Worry won't help.

  452. Even worse,

  453. it dishonors God,

  454. because when we worry,

  455. it's like saying to Him,

  456. I really don't trust you.

  457. Now,

  458. if worry's wrong,

  459. what's the right way

  460. to deal with hardship

  461. and uncertainty?

  462. Well, Paul tells us,

  463. pray about everything.

  464. Look at verse 6.

  465. But in everything,

  466. by prayer and supplication,

  467. with thanksgiving,

  468. let your requests

  469. be made known to God.

  470. Paul doesn't say,

  471. just don't worry.

  472. He provides us

  473. with an alternative to worry.

  474. He says,

  475. take your problem to God

  476. in prayer.

  477. Prayer is the Christian

  478. solution to worry.

  479. Now,

  480. I want to emphasize,

  481. prayer is the Christian's

  482. alternative to worry.

  483. When Jesus taught us to pray,

  484. and Jesus gives us

  485. the best model prayer,

  486. His teaching on prayer,

  487. His teaching on everything

  488. is what's best.

  489. But when Jesus teaches us

  490. to pray in Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  491. beginning about verse 9,

  492. in Luke chapter 11,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  493. He tells us to always

  494. begin our prayer.

  495. How?

  496. Our Father.

  497. Jesus talks about

  498. praying to God

  499. from the relationship

  500. of being His child,

  501. our Father.

  502. Only a Christian

  503. can pray that prayer.

  504. Only a Christian,

  505. only someone who has

  506. truly repented of their sins

  507. but their trust in Jesus

  508. has been born again

  509. by the Spirit of God,

  510. has been forgiven

  511. and made a child of God.

  512. made right with God.

  513. Jesus very clearly said,

  514. I am the way,

  515. the truth,

  516. and the life,

  517. and no one comes

  518. to the Father

  519. except through me.

  520. The only way that anyone

  521. can know God

  522. as their Father

  523. is through a right

  524. relationship with Jesus Christ.

  525. And that's what enables us

  526. to be able to pray.

  527. If you want to be able

  528. to take your problem

  529. to God in prayer,

  530. instead of worrying about it,

  531. make sure you have

  532. a real relationship

  533. with God

  534. as your Father

  535. through your faith

  536. in Jesus.

  537. Make sure that you have

  538. a close relationship

  539. with Him

  540. because you're spending time

  541. with Him every day,

  542. talking to Him,

  543. listening to Him,

  544. talking to Him in prayer,

  545. listening to Him

  546. as He speaks through His Word

  547. so that when something

  548. does come up,

  549. when you need to talk to Him,

  550. you don't have to

  551. reintroduce yourself to Him.

  552. The relationship is strong.

  553. It's intact.

  554. And note that Paul emphasizes

  555. that we can make

  556. specific requests to God.

  557. He's talking about

  558. praying in general

  559. but also uses the word

  560. supplication

  561. or some translations

  562. use the word petition.

  563. That's just asking God

  564. for stuff.

  565. If someone said,

  566. that's help me

  567. kind of prayers.

  568. Asking God to work

  569. in your home situation,

  570. to work

  571. in relation to that job.

  572. Asking God to work,

  573. help you in relation

  574. to your relationship

  575. with someone.

  576. Matt Chandler

  577. does a good job

  578. of explaining

  579. the relationship

  580. between prayer and worry.

  581. Matt Chandler

  582. is a pastor,

  583. has a great way

  584. of communicating

  585. the truth of God's Word.

  586. We've used some of his studies

  587. on Sunday nights

  588. so some of you

  589. are familiar with him.

  590. I want you to look

  591. at what he says.

  592. Really,

  593. prayer and worry

  594. are of the same essence.

  595. They are both

  596. a rehearsing

  597. of circumstances,

  598. a mulling over,

  599. and a kind of mental

  600. and emotional chewing.

  601. But in worry,

  602. there's no connection,

  603. no traction.

  604. It's like spinning

  605. our wheels.

  606. Worrying is like

  607. trying to travel

  608. in a rocking chair.

  609. But when we pray,

  610. we are worrying

  611. at God.

  612. We take those anxieties

  613. and direct them Godward,

  614. taking them to him,

  615. placing them before him,

  616. and of utmost importance,

  617. handing them over.

  618. This is why Martin Luther says,

  619. pray and let God worry.

  620. Chandler goes on to say,

  621. we have a supreme example

  622. of this supplication

  623. in the prayer of Jesus

  624. in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  625. Facing his impending arrest,

  626. torture,

  627. and execution,

  628. Jesus is so grieved

  629. and broken

  630. that he is sweating blood

  631. as he prays.

  632. He prays,

  633. my father,

  634. if it be possible,

  635. let this cup pass from me.

  636. But then he adds,

  637. nevertheless,

  638. not as I will,

  639. but as you will.

  640. What has Jesus done,

  641. Chandler asks?

  642. He has obeyed the command

  643. not to worry

  644. by worrying at God.

  645. He takes his anxiety

  646. to the Father

  647. and hands it over.

  648. There's always a situation

  649. in our life

  650. where we're tempted to worry.

  651. The idea is

  652. don't pretend it doesn't exist.

  653. Take it to God.

  654. Talk to Him about it.

  655. You know,

  656. Peter must have learned

  657. that from Jesus

  658. because he writes this,

  659. casting all your anxieties

  660. on Him

  661. because He cares for you.

  662. When you face

  663. hardship and uncertainty,

  664. and you will

  665. if you're not now,

  666. learn to take it to God

  667. in prayer.

  668. One way to do this

  669. is ask God

  670. for the wisdom

  671. to know

  672. what you ought to do.

  673. In a lot of situations

  674. that we

  675. are stressed out about,

  676. there's something

  677. that we know

  678. we need to do.

  679. Well, go to God

  680. and ask Him,

  681. Lord, give me the wisdom.

  682. Help me to understand

  683. what it is

  684. that I need to do.

  685. Ask Him

  686. to guide you

  687. in developing

  688. a plan of action

  689. when it's clear

  690. you've got to do something.

  691. But in some situations,

  692. there's just nothing

  693. you can do.

  694. Or there's nothing

  695. you should do.

  696. That's the time

  697. that we ask God

  698. to help us

  699. and trust Him

  700. to take care of it

  701. and then not worry

  702. about it anymore.

  703. Note what else

  704. Paul says

  705. about our prayers.

  706. He says,

  707. do it with thanksgiving

  708. that your requests

  709. be made on to God.

  710. This doesn't mean

  711. you thank God

  712. for your problems.

  713. You don't thank God.

  714. It's not saying here

  715. we thank God

  716. that you're hurting,

  717. that you're suffering.

  718. But we are to thank God

  719. in our problems.

  720. There's a big difference.

  721. You know,

  722. no matter what's going on

  723. in our lives,

  724. we've always got a lot

  725. to be thankful for

  726. if we're Christians.

  727. If we're Christians,

  728. we are children of God

  729. and God has promised

  730. to never leave us

  731. nor forsake us.

  732. As we were singing

  733. about earlier,

  734. nothing can ever

  735. separate us from God

  736. and His love.

  737. Nothing.

  738. No one.

  739. No thing.

  740. God is for us

  741. because we're His children.

  742. Another thing we need

  743. to think of

  744. and we need to give thanks for,

  745. this world is not

  746. all there is.

  747. You know,

  748. for a lot of people,

  749. their whole concept

  750. of reality

  751. is just what they see.

  752. what they feel,

  753. what's happening right now.

  754. But for us as Christians,

  755. we know better.

  756. We know that

  757. God

  758. is preparing

  759. a new heaven

  760. and a new earth

  761. for us,

  762. His people.

  763. Jesus talked about

  764. going to prepare

  765. a place for us.

  766. one day,

  767. one day,

  768. one day,

  769. either after we die

  770. or if we live long enough

  771. when the Lord comes back

  772. into this world,

  773. one day,

  774. all the hardships

  775. and uncertainties

  776. of life in this world

  777. will be no more.

  778. One day,

  779. all that there will be

  780. will be

  781. a new heaven

  782. and a new earth

  783. where we are,

  784. where we're with

  785. people that we know

  786. who are Christians,

  787. and we're living

  788. the life that

  789. God intends for us

  790. to live,

  791. glorifying Him,

  792. serving His purpose,

  793. doing something meaningful

  794. as His children

  795. for all eternity.

  796. We have a lot

  797. to be thankful for.

  798. Paul tells us

  799. not to worry

  800. but to pray.

  801. And then he gives us

  802. a reason

  803. for such prayer.

  804. Look at the last thing,

  805. verse 7,

  806. the peace that replaces

  807. worry.

  808. It says,

  809. And the peace of God

  810. which surpasses

  811. all understanding

  812. will guard your hearts

  813. and your minds

  814. in Christ Jesus.

  815. I want you to understand this.

  816. Paul does not say

  817. that your prayers

  818. will make everything okay.

  819. It is,

  820. it is not true

  821. that if you have

  822. enough faith,

  823. if you pray

  824. just the right prayer,

  825. then your sufferings

  826. will end.

  827. That's false teaching.

  828. That's ungodly teaching.

  829. That's just totally

  830. contrary

  831. to what we see

  832. happening

  833. in the Bible.

  834. God never promises

  835. that if you pray

  836. a certain prayer,

  837. if you have

  838. a certain amount

  839. of faith,

  840. that He will take

  841. all your troubles

  842. away.

  843. But what God

  844. does promise

  845. is to be with us

  846. in our troubles

  847. when He doesn't

  848. take them away.

  849. I want you to look

  850. at what a man

  851. by the name

  852. of Joe Thorne

  853. says because he

  854. does a great job

  855. of describing

  856. how God works

  857. in relation to suffering.

  858. Look at it.

  859. God does not promise

  860. to rid your life

  861. of affliction

  862. and difficulty.

  863. He does,

  864. however,

  865. offer to give you

  866. the grace needed

  867. to suffer well.

  868. It isn't wrong

  869. to ask God

  870. to relieve you

  871. of your pain,

  872. but it is more

  873. important that

  874. in the midst

  875. of the pain,

  876. you rely on

  877. the promise

  878. of God

  879. to work such

  880. experiences

  881. for His glory

  882. and your good.

  883. To use these times

  884. as a means

  885. of perfecting

  886. your faith,

  887. strengthening

  888. your spirit,

  889. and transforming

  890. your life

  891. in such a way

  892. that you are

  893. becoming

  894. more like Jesus.

  895. Paul,

  896. in his own way,

  897. tells us

  898. something like this

  899. in Romans 8,

  900. 28.

  901. And we know

  902. that in all things,

  903. he's been talking

  904. about suffering

  905. up to that point.

  906. And we know

  907. that in all things,

  908. God works for the good

  909. of those who love Him,

  910. who have been called

  911. according to His purpose.

  912. A lot of times,

  913. we don't understand

  914. what God's doing.

  915. We don't understand

  916. how anything good

  917. could come from

  918. certain situations.

  919. That's where faith

  920. comes in.

  921. That we trust God,

  922. that He is great

  923. and that He is good.

  924. He's involved

  925. in this world.

  926. He's involved

  927. in our lives.

  928. He's involved

  929. in all situations.

  930. Working in such a way

  931. that ultimately,

  932. He will be glorified,

  933. His purpose

  934. will be accomplished,

  935. and we

  936. will develop,

  937. as Christians,

  938. we will develop

  939. more Christ-like

  940. character.

  941. That's God's real goal.

  942. Understand,

  943. God never

  944. promises

  945. to rescue us

  946. from all trouble.

  947. But He does

  948. promise to

  949. replace our anxiety

  950. with His peace.

  951. Think for just a moment.

  952. How do you feel

  953. when you're all stressed out?

  954. When you are really worried?

  955. Don't you feel

  956. uncertain?

  957. Nervous?

  958. Tired?

  959. Afraid?

  960. Well,

  961. when we learn

  962. to trust God

  963. and pray

  964. instead of worry,

  965. this verse

  966. is telling us

  967. that He will give us

  968. a peace

  969. within our soul

  970. that cannot be described

  971. with words.

  972. Let's think about it.

  973. What is this peace?

  974. It is a supernatural

  975. experience.

  976. It's something

  977. that God gives

  978. to His people

  979. within our soul

  980. that cannot really

  981. be explained.

  982. It's beyond comprehension.

  983. But it can be

  984. experienced.

  985. peace.

  986. Here's what I want you

  987. to think.

  988. Some of us

  989. in this room,

  990. we could stand up

  991. and talk about

  992. how we've experienced

  993. that peace.

  994. There have been times

  995. in my life

  996. when I have prayed

  997. for a person,

  998. for a family member,

  999. a situation

  1000. that I'm really

  1001. close to

  1002. and involved in.

  1003. And God didn't

  1004. make it go away

  1005. but He gave me

  1006. a sense of peace

1007. that it's going to be

  1008. He's with me

  1009. and I can just

  1010. continue on.

  1011. Some of you

  1012. in this room

  1013. have told me

  1014. yourself

  1015. how in the midst

  1016. of some kind

  1017. of difficulty,

  1018. that's how God

  1019. helped you.

  1020. He just

  1021. gave you

  1022. what you needed

  1023. to be calm,

  1024. to have wisdom

1025. to know what to do

  1026. and to act

  1027. smart,

  1028. wisely

  1029. in the midst

  1030. of a very difficult

  1031. stressful situation.

  1032. Some of you

  1033. in this room

  1034. know this

  1035. because you

  1036. heard it

  1037. but there have

  1038. been members

  1039. of our church

  1040. who have died

  1041. and they

  1042. looked me

  1043. in the eye

  1044. one

  1045. in a hospice

  1046. room

  1047. at a hospice

  1048. house

  1049. and told me

  1050. that they

  1051. had peace,

  1052. they were

  1053. ready to go,

  1054. they knew

  1055. they were going

  1056. to be in the

  1057. presence of the

  1058. Lord soon.

  1059. Some of you

  1060. have heard

  1061. something like

  1062. that.

  1063. I've heard

  1064. that in a

  1065. home.

  1066. I've heard

  1067. people

  1068. who know

  1069. death is

  1070. imminent,

  1071. it's going

  1072. to happen

  1073. and they

  1074. look me

  1075. in the eye

  1076. and a lot

  1077. of times

  1078. they smile,

  1079. it's going

  1080. to be alright.

  1081. That is a

  1082. peace

  1083. that cannot

  1084. be explained.

  1085. If a person

  1086. is not a

  1087. Christian,

  1088. they cannot

  1089. comprehend

  1090. that.

  1091. That's the

  1092. grace of

  1093. God

  1094. working in

  1095. the life

  1096. of His

  1097. children

  1098. to prepare

  1099. them to

  1100. come into

  1101. His presence

  1102. in a peaceful,

  1103. in a calm,

  1104. in a way

  1105. that's not

  1106. all stressed

  1107. out.

  1108. If we'll

  1109. pray instead

  1110. of worry,

  1111. we'll discover

  1112. what John

  1113. Piper says

  1114. about peace,

  1115. the peace

  1116. of God.

  1117. Look at it

  1118. with me.

  1119. When we let

  1120. our requests

  1121. be made known

  1122. to God

  1123. like this,

  1124. in the

  1125. devotion of

  1126. prayer,

  1127. in many

  1128. specific

  1129. requests

  1130. for help,

  1131. with a

  1132. heart that

  1133. is thankful

  1134. for everything

  1135. God

  1136. designs

  1137. for us,

  1138. the pleasures

  1139. and the

  1140. pain,

  1141. then His

  1142. peace will

  1143. guard our

  1144. minds and

  1145. free us

  1146. from anxiety

  1147. in a way

  1148. that defies

  1149. mere rational

  1150. explanation.

  1151. It surpasses

  1152. all

  1153. understanding.

  1154. Here's what

  1155. I want us to

  1156. think as we

  1157. wind this up.

  1158. We all face

  1159. hardships and

  1160. uncertainties.

  1161. And when we

  1162. do, we have

  1163. two choices.

  1164. We can

  1165. worry.

  1166. We can

  1167. subject

  1168. ourselves to

  1169. all kinds

  1170. of fears

  1171. and stress

  1172. and misery.

  1173. Or, we

  1174. can pray

  1175. and trust

  1176. God to do

  1177. what only

  1178. He can

  1179. do and

  1180. give us

  1181. the wisdom

  1182. to do what

  1183. He wants

  1184. us to do.

  1185. If we

  1186. will do

  1187. that, He

  1188. promises to

  1189. give us this

  1190. supernatural

  1191. power to

  1192. experience

  1193. peace in

  1194. the midst

  1195. of the

  1196. hardship, in

  1197. spite of the

  1198. uncertainty.

  1199. But you

  1200. know, this

  1201. is a choice

  1202. we've got to

  1203. make in

  1204. every difficult

  1205. situation.

  1206. It's not a

  1207. once and

  1208. for all kind

  1209. of decision.

  1210. We may

  1211. struggle with

  1212. it every

  1213. day.

  1214. In some

  1215. stressful

  1216. situations, we

  1217. may struggle

  1218. many times

  1219. throughout the

  1220. day and

  1221. many times

  1222. call out to

  1223. God to

  1224. give us

  1225. what we

  1226. need for

  1227. the moment.

  1228. But if we'll

  1229. learn to

  1230. really trust

  1231. God, that

  1232. He really is

  1233. in control,

  1234. and that He

  1235. is working

  1236. everything out

  1237. according to

  1238. His good

  1239. purpose, we

  1240. can and we

  1241. will avoid

  1242. worry.

  1243. We can have

  1244. it replaced

  1245. with a

  1246. satisfying

  1247. peace of

  1248. God deep

  1249. within our

  1250. soul.

  1251. But here's

  1252. the thing,

  1253. you as a

  1254. Christian, you

  1255. got to make

  1256. the choice.

  1257. in every

  1258. situation, whether

  1259. it's stressful,

  1260. whether there's

  1261. uncertainty, whether

  1262. it's trouble,

  1263. whatever, you

  1264. got to make

  1265. the choice.

  1266. Am I going

  1267. to worry and

  1268. get no relief,

  1269. or am I going

  1270. to pray and

  1271. trust God and

  1272. experience His

  1273. peace?

  1274. Let's pray

  1275. together now.

  1276. Dear God,

  1277. show us how we

  1278. should respond.

  1279. you know how

  1280. we normally

  1281. respond.

  1282. You know what

  1283. we normally do

  1284. when we get

  1285. under stress,

  1286. when there's a

  1287. lot of

  1288. uncertainty,

  1289. when there's

  1290. fear,

  1291. when there's

  1292. suffering.

  1293. Father,

  1294. show us if

  1295. we are more

  1296. untrusting of

  1297. you than

  1298. trusting.

  1299. Help us,

  1300. Father, to

  1301. confess our

  1302. sin, if it

  1303. is, and

  1304. truly repent

  1305. and seek your

  1306. forgiveness.

  1307. Help us,

  1308. Father, to

  1309. understand that

  1310. as your

  1311. children in

  1312. this world.

  1313. You want us

  1314. to learn to

  1315. pray and

  1316. trust you and

  1317. depend upon

  1318. you and

  1319. obey you.

  1320. And just

  1321. drive home the

  1322. point, dear God,

  1323. that's the way to

  1324. experience your

  1325. peace.

  1326. In an attitude

  1327. of prayer, you

  1328. just listen to the

  1329. Lord and obey

  1330. Him as He speaks

  1331. to you.

  1332. If you'd like me

  1333. to pray for you

  1334. during this time,

  1335. I'll be here at

  1336. the front and

  1337. would be glad,

  1338. honored to do

  1339. that with you.

  1340. Let's

  1341. pray for you.
