  1. Probably never do that to you.

  2. If you were here last Sunday,

  3. you'd remember that I began the message by talking about

  4. there's just so much

  5. on the news,

  6. word of mouth,

  7. so much going on

  8. about the uncertainties of life

  9. and the hardships of life.

  10. And last week I made reference to

  11. the devastation of Hurricane Harvey

  12. and all the flooding

  13. and as we are meeting right now,

  14. Hurricane Irma.

  15. Think about all the uncertainty.

  16. The people throughout Florida,

  17. Georgia,

  18. South Carolina,

  19. Alabama,

  20. really the Southeast.

  21. There's so much we don't know.

  22. About what is heading for us.

  23. So much that people are already experiencing

  24. hardship over in South Florida

  25. and in the Caribbean.

  26. But you know,

  27. we don't have to look on the news.

  28. We don't have to look far away

  29. to find hardship and uncertainty, do we?

  30. Because right here in this room,

  31. we experience it.

  32. Some of you right now are going through hard times

  33. or some uncertain times.

  34. we need to remember

  35. and put into practice

  36. what we learned last week

  37. about dealing with hardship and uncertainty

  38. and the stress,

  39. anxiety,

  40. and worry

  41. that it produces.

  42. What we learned last week

  43. about dealing with worry

  44. came from Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4:6–7

  45. verses 6 through 7.

  46. I'll give you three statements.

  47. Don't worry about anything,

  48. we're told.

  49. Verse 6,

  50. do not be anxious about anything.

  51. The alternative is to pray.

  52. Pray about everything.

  53. Look at verse 6.

  54. But in everything,

  55. by prayer and supplication,

  56. with thanksgiving,

  57. let your requests be made known to God.

  58. And then we looked at one other thing last week.

  59. Look to God to replace worry with peace.

  60. Verse 7,

  61. and the peace of God,

  62. which surpasses all understanding,

  63. which is beyond our ability to comprehend,

  64. will guard your hearts and your minds

  65. in Christ Jesus.

  66. Today, I want to expand on that message.

  67. And today, what I want us to do is look

  68. at what Jesus said

  69. in Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  70. the Sermon on the Mount,

  71. which is probably,

  72. or should be,

  73. the most well-known passage in the Bible

  74. on dealing with worry

  75. or dealing with anxiety.

  76. I do believe that worry

  77. is the most popular subject

  78. I ever preach on.

  79. I always get a lot of positive feedback

  80. from a message related to worry, stress, anxiety.

  81. And last week was no different.

  82. I appreciate the phone calls

  83. and the statements,

  84. emails,

  85. about how God used that

  86. to help some,

  87. encourage some,

  88. remind some.

  89. Well, because it's such a powerful temptation

  90. that we all have to deal with

  91. more often than we would like,

  92. I want to continue that thought

  93. by looking at what Jesus said

  94. here in the Sermon on the Mount.

  95. And what I really want to focus on

  96. is going to be toward the end

  97. of today's message.

  98. We,

  99. instead of worrying,

  100. as we trust God,

  101. as we pray,

  102. we need to make sure

  103. we have the right priorities in life.

  104. And we're going to look at that

  105. in this message.

  106. And then next Sunday,

  107. I want us to look at a passage of Scripture

  108. that shows us why.

  109. We can be absolutely confident

  110. that God knows us,

  111. He loves us,

  112. and is fully able to take care of us

  113. no matter what.

  114. And we'll see that in Psalm 139.

  115. I hope you'll read that this coming week.

  116. And think about all that is said there

  117. about God's greatness,

  118. God's activity.

  119. But notice as you read

  120. and prepare for next week

  121. how the psalmist talks about

  122. how God is so personally

  123. involved in His life

  124. and in our lives.

  125. So right now, though,

  126. let's look at Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  127. And if you would,

  128. open your Bible.

  129. We're not going to put it on the screen.

  130. It's sort of a lengthy passage.

  131. And we're going to keep looking back

  132. at several things.

  133. So Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  134. beginning in verse 25,

  135. Jesus is teaching.

  136. Therefore I tell you,

  137. do not be anxious

  138. or do not worry about your life,

  139. what you will eat

  140. or what you will drink,

  141. nor about your body,

  142. what you will put on.

  143. Is not life more than food

  144. and the body more than clothing?

  145. Look at the birds of the air.

  146. They neither sow nor reap

  147. nor gather into barns.

  148. And yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

  149. Are you not of more value than they?

  150. And which of you by being anxious

  151. can add a single hour

  152. to his span of life?

  153. And why are you anxious about clothing?

  154. Consider the lilies of the field,

  155. how they grow.

  156. They neither toil nor spin.

  157. Yet I tell you,

  158. even Solomon in all of his glory

  159. was not arrayed like one of these.

  160. But if God so clothes the grass of the field,

  161. which day is alive

  162. and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

  163. it's used for fuel,

  164. build a fire with.

  165. Will he not much more clothe you,

  166. O you of little faith?

  167. Therefore,

  168. do not be anxious,

  169. saying,

  170. what shall we eat

  171. or what shall we drink

  172. or what shall we wear?

  173. For the Gentiles

  174. or pagans

  175. or unbelievers,

  176. different translations

  177. use a different word,

  178. for the unbelievers

  179. seek after all these things.

  180. And your heavenly Father knows

  181. that you need them all.

  182. But seek first

  183. the kingdom of God

  184. and his righteousness

  185. and all these things

  186. will be added to you.

  187. Therefore,

  188. do not be anxious about tomorrow

  189. for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.

  190. Sufficient for the day

  191. is its own trouble.

  192. Jesus begins by addressing

  193. the problem of worry.

  194. He tells us three things

  195. about why worry is unnecessary.

  196. Number one,

  197. worry is unnecessary

  198. because God takes care

  199. of his people.

  200. Look back in verse 26,

  201. if you would.

  202. Jesus,

  203. in talking to people,

  204. says,

  205. just look at the birds of the air.

  206. They neither sow

  207. nor reap

  208. nor gather into barns.

  209. And yet your heavenly Father

  210. feeds them

  211. look at verse 28.

  212. And why are you anxious

  213. about clothing?

  214. Consider the lilies of the field,

  215. how they grow.

  216. They neither toil

  217. nor spin.

  218. Yet I tell you,

  219. even Solomon

  220. in all of his glory

  221. was not arrayed

  222. like one of those.

  223. Now think about this.

  224. Jesus brought up

  225. the birds of the air

  226. and the lilies of the field.

  227. Obviously,

  228. he was not enlightening anyone.

  229. They don't get stressed

  230. about anything in life.

  231. Birds don't sit up in trees

  232. and worry

  233. about what they're going to eat.

  234. Flowers,

  235. they have no ability

  236. to stress

  237. over what they wear

  238. or what they look like.

  239. Jesus understood

  240. that he was not talking

  241. about a reality here,

  242. about birds

  243. and lilies of the field.

  244. Thinking,

  245. the point is this,

  246. if God takes care

  247. of these lesser creatures,

  248. we can trust him

  249. to take care of us

  250. because we,

  251. as human beings,

  252. are his highest form

  253. of creation.

  254. God made human beings

  255. in his image

  256. and absolutely nothing else.

  257. Nothing else

  258. in all the created universe

  259. is like us

  260. as human beings.

  261. that makes us special.

  262. We are created

  263. in the image

  264. of Almighty God.

  265. Plus,

  266. while we're created

  267. in the image of God,

  268. ever since Adam and Eve

  269. sinned

  270. in the Garden of Eden

  271. that is recorded

  272. in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  273. ever since they sinned,

  274. we have not

  275. lived like people

  276. created in the image

  277. of God.

  278. We have blurred

  279. that image

  280. by our sin

  281. and selfishness.

  282. But yet,

  283. God loves us enough

  284. that he sent his son

  285. into this world

  286. to save us

  287. by taking the punishment

  288. that our sin

  289. deserves

  290. when he died

  291. on the cross.

  292. God loves us,

  293. we who are created

  294. in his image,

  295. so much

  296. God loves us.

  297. He sent his son

  298. into the world

  299. to save us,

  300. to change us,

  301. and with his spirit

  302. living in us

  303. as believers

  304. to start

  305. making us

  306. anew

  307. in his image,

  308. overcoming

  309. some of the flaws

  310. that will

  311. eventually be

  312. all overcome

  313. in the new heaven

  314. and new earth

  315. that God's preparing

  316. for us

  317. with our new bodies.

  318. But that's another subject.

  319. Think for a moment.

  320. Our heavenly Father

  321. created everything.

  322. He continues

  323. to work

  324. in everything,

  325. guiding and directing

  326. according to his

  327. purpose,

  328. which is ultimately good.

  329. He can be trusted

  330. with everything

  331. in our lives

  332. because of who he is,

  333. because of what he's

  334. already done for us.

  335. He can be trusted

  336. so we don't have

  337. to worry.

  338. God

  339. takes care

  340. of

  341. his

  342. people

  343. and Jesus

  344. is just letting us know

  345. God takes care

  346. of everything,

  347. even things

  348. as lowly as a bird

  349. and a flower.

  350. How much more

  351. will he take care

  352. of us?

  353. So trust him.

  354. Secondly,

  355. worry is unnecessary

  356. because,

  357. or it's useless

  358. because it doesn't

  359. change one thing.

  360. Look at verse 27.

  361. And which of you

  362. by being anxious

  363. can add a single hour

  364. to a span of life?

  365. I like the way

  366. the New Living

  367. translation says,

  368. it says,

  369. can all your worries

  370. add a single moment

  371. to your life?

  372. What are you worried

  373. about right now?

  374. Or,

  375. let's be more spiritual,

  376. what are you tempted

  377. to worry about right now?

  378. Hurricane Irma

  379. probably is the top

  380. of a lot of people's list.

  381. But,

  382. in this room,

  383. some people are worried

  384. about some health issues,

  385. some test results,

  386. some people are worried

  387. about some things

  388. going on in their home,

  389. family related.

  390. Some people are worried

  391. about some things

  392. and others

  393. in your Sunday school class

  394. are sitting next to you.

  395. They know it.

  396. But,

  397. we have some concerns

  398. that no one knows about.

  399. It's just us.

  400. And we're not going

  401. to tell anyone.

  402. But whatever your concern

  403. or worry is,

  404. let me ask you this.

  405. What is your

  406. getting stressed out,

  407. losing sleep,

  408. being anxious,

  409. not being able to eat,

  410. what good

  411. is that going to do?

  412. I want you to think with me.

  413. Your greatest

  414. source of,

  415. say,

  416. ongoing

  417. temptation to worry.

  418. Not just one

  419. isolated thing,

  420. but most of us,

  421. there are certain things

  422. in our life

  423. that's sort of

  424. an ongoing battle.

  425. We're tempted to worry

  426. or, just to be honest,

  427. we do worry.

  428. Most of

  429. my adult life,

  430. my greatest

  431. source of worry

  432. has been

  433. my children,

  434. my boys.

  435. And I've reached

  436. the point in life,

  437. they've reached

  438. the point in life,

  439. I can look back

  440. and say,

  441. there are unique

  442. worries at every age.

  443. When they're preschoolers,

  444. there's certain

  445. kind of things

  446. you are sort of

  447. anxious about.

  448. When they're children,

  449. there's some other things.

  450. When they're teenagers,

  451. it's just a whole

  452. new ball game,

  453. isn't it?

  454. But I used to think

  455. if I can just live

  456. and they can live

  457. to get out

  458. of those teenage years,

  459. get over,

  460. you know,

  461. come down off

  462. fool's hill,

  463. maybe get married,

  464. settle down,

  465. be adults,

  466. I used to think,

  467. I won't ever worry

  468. about them anymore.

  469. that's not true.

  470. I see some of you

  471. smile,

  472. even nod,

  473. who have adult children.

  474. There's never a time

  475. that you're not

  476. concerned about

  477. your children,

  478. no matter what

  479. their age is.

  480. And then when they

  481. start having children,

  482. you start being

  483. concerned,

  484. worrying,

  485. about those

  486. grandchildren.

  487. children.

  488. Now,

  489. how do you deal

  490. with it?

  491. Are you able

  492. to deal with it?

  493. And if you do,

  494. just give in the

  495. temptation to do worry.

  496. Does it help?

  497. You know,

  498. there's two ways

  499. to do this.

  500. I'm going to use

  501. Lisa and me

  502. as an example

  503. because I'm

  504. the bad guy

  505. in this.

  506. When our boys

  507. were teenagers,

  508. they'd be out

  509. somewhere,

  510. and they didn't,

  511. you know,

  512. it was getting late

  513. and they weren't

  514. home.

  515. I was the one

  516. who was stressed.

  517. I believed

  518. God's sovereign.

  519. I prayed for them,

  520. but when it got

  521. time,

  522. I thought they

  523. ought to be home.

  524. I started looking.

  525. And when it was

  526. past time,

  527. I thought they

  528. ought to be home.

  529. I was looking

  530. and I was mad

  531. and I was stressed

  532. out.

  533. And I can remember

  534. at times looking

  535. out the window,

  536. thinking,

  537. even praying,

  538. Lord,

  539. bring them home.

  540. Lord,

  541. keep them safe.

  542. Get them here

  543. so I can kill them.

  544. Being that mad

  545. and that stressed

  546. and both of them

  547. can tell you,

  548. you can ask them

  549. after this service.

  550. I met them

  551. at the door.

  552. But you know

  553. what Lisa was doing?

  554. Sawing logs.

  555. And we talked

  556. about that

  557. lots of times.

  558. She trusted

  559. that God

  560. was sovereign

  561. and she prayed

  562. for those boys

  563. and she went

  564. to bed

  565. and went to sleep

  566. and she did not

  567. worry nine times

  568. out of ten.

  569. Nine times

  570. out of ten.

  571. She got good

  572. nights sleep.

  573. many nights

  574. when I didn't

  575. and the reason

  576. was

  577. she chose

  578. to trust God

  579. and rest

  580. in Him

  581. and I didn't.

  582. and I'll be

  583. prideful.

  584. I knew more

  585. about the

  586. sovereignty of God

  587. than she did

  588. but it didn't

  589. do a bit

  590. of good

  591. because I

  592. wouldn't just

  593. let God

  594. take care of

  595. them

  596. and trust

  597. Him.

  598. I wanted

  599. to worry

  600. and stress

  601. and think

  602. about all

  603. the negative

  604. possible

  605. scenarios

  606. that could

  607. happen.

  608. Jesus is

  609. telling us

  610. worry

  611. is useless

  612. because it

  613. changes

  614. nothing.

  615. It helps

  616. nothing.

  617. It really

  618. only hurts.

  619. It can't

  620. hurt us

  621. physically.

  622. Make us

  623. sick.

  624. Make us

  625. have ulcers.

  626. It hurts

  627. us emotionally.

  628. It hurts

  629. the spirit

  630. spiritually

  631. because sooner

  632. or later

  633. as Christians

  634. we realize

  635. we're not

  636. trusting God.

  637. We're

  638. dishonoring

  639. Him

  640. which comes

  641. to the next

  642. thing.

  643. Worry is

  644. unbelief

  645. because it

  646. indicates our

  647. failure to

  648. trust God.

  649. Look in

  650. verse 31

  651. again.

  652. Therefore

  653. do not be

  654. anxious

  655. saying what

  656. shall we eat

  657. or what

  658. shall we drink

  659. or what

  660. shall we wear

  661. for the

  662. Gentiles.

  663. NIV says

  664. the pagans.

  665. Some

  666. translations

  667. say the

  668. unbelievers

  669. seek after

  670. all these

  671. things

  672. and your

  673. heavenly

  674. Father

  675. knows

  676. that you

  677. need them

  678. all.

  679. Let me

  680. just throw

  681. in from

  682. last week.

  683. Worry is

  684. not the same

  685. thing as

  686. concern.

  687. Nowhere does

  688. the Bible

  689. say we

  690. should be

  691. unconcerned.

  692. Don't care.

  693. Be detached.

  694. Be unemotionally

  695. involved in

  696. life and

  697. people around

  698. you.

  699. No.

  700. Jesus was

  701. fully involved

  702. in life.

  703. Jesus was

  704. very concerned

  705. about people.

  706. Jesus wept

  707. at times.

  708. Jesus parted

  709. with his

  710. friends at

  711. times.

  712. Jesus got

  713. mad at

  714. times and

  715. confronted and

  716. really went

  717. at those

  718. hypocritical

  719. Pharisees who

  720. opposed him.

  721. Worry

  722. literally means

  723. to be divided,

  724. to be pulled

  725. apart.

  726. Jesus addressed

  727. the sin of

  728. worry immediately

  729. after he had

  730. said what you

  731. read in verse

  732. 24 about no

  733. one can serve

  734. two masters.

  735. Look at it

  736. real quickly.

  737. He says no

  738. one can serve

  739. two masters

  740. for either he

  741. will hate the

  742. one and love

  743. the other or

  744. he will be

  745. devoted to the

  746. one and

  747. despise the

  748. other.

  749. You cannot

  750. serve God

  751. and money.

  752. Therefore,

  753. I tell you,

  754. do not be

  755. anxious about

  756. your life.

  757. Jesus was

  758. saying,

  759. you cannot

  760. be my

  761. disciple.

  762. You can't

  763. live a

  764. Christian life

  765. unless you

  766. have a

  767. single-minded

  768. devotion to

  769. God.

  770. You've got

  771. to seek

  772. him and

  773. his will

  774. above all

  775. other things.

  776. worry is a

  777. sign that

  778. we're divided.

  779. Worry in

  780. our mind.

  781. Worry is a

  782. sign that we

  783. don't really

  784. trust God

  785. completely.

  786. We trust

  787. him some

  788. but not

  789. a hundred

  790. percent.

  791. My boys

  792. were out.

  793. I had a

  794. good theology

  795. and intellectually

  796. I did trust

  797. God, no

  798. doubts, but I

  799. was divided.

  800. I didn't

  801. trust him

  802. completely.

  803. Jesus is

  804. saying when

  805. we do that

  806. kind of

  807. stuff, when

  808. we worry

  809. like this,

  810. we're a

  811. living life,

  812. acting like

  813. an unbeliever.

  814. We're not

  815. acting like

  816. children of

  817. God.

  818. If we have

  819. God as our

  820. heavenly

  821. father, if

  822. we really

  823. know we're

  824. his children,

  825. we should

  826. trust that he

  827. can and is

  828. able to take

  829. care of us

  830. and our

  831. situations and

  832. our family,

  833. how do you

  834. respond to the

  835. stressful situations

  836. that you have to

  837. deal with?

  838. Do you

  839. trust your

  840. heavenly father

  841. as Jesus talks

  842. about here?

  843. Do you pray?

  844. As Paul told

  845. us, that's the

  846. thing we need to

  847. do instead of

  848. worry, pray.

  849. Do you trust

  850. God's will is

  851. best?

  852. Now that's

  853. hard.

  854. It's one

  855. thing to

  856. trust God.

  857. It's one

  858. thing to pray

  859. and ask God

  860. to work in

  861. your life.

  862. But what

  863. if God's

  864. will is

  865. something that

  866. you don't

  867. like, that

  868. you don't

  869. want, that

  870. it's the

  871. opposite of

  872. what you're

  873. praying about?

  874. Are you

  875. willing to

  876. be like

  877. Jesus as

  878. he prayed in

  879. the garden of

  880. Gethsemane?

  881. As he's

  882. looking, looking

  883. at the next

  884. few hours, he's

  885. going to be

  886. arrested, he's

  887. going to be

  888. tortured, he's

  889. going to be

  890. executed, he's

  891. going to be

  892. put on that

  893. cross?

  894. Jesus says,

  895. if it's possible

  896. that this cup

  897. pass from me,

  898. this cup of

  899. suffering,

  900. nevertheless, not

  901. my will, but

  902. your will be

  903. done.

  904. That's what

  905. Jesus prayed.

  906. God's will was

  907. hard.

  908. I think it's

  909. very important

  910. as we talk

  911. about these

  912. kind of

  913. things, about

  914. don't worry,

  915. trust God,

  916. don't worry,

  917. pray.

  918. Jesus is not

  919. saying that if

  920. you don't

  921. worry and you

  922. do trust God

  923. and you do

  924. pray, he's

  925. not saying all

  926. will work out

  927. the way you

  928. want it to.

  929. I want to

  930. repeat a quote

  931. from a guy by

  932. the name of

  933. Joe Thorne

  934. from last

  935. week, because

  936. I think it's

  937. vitally important

  938. that we

  939. understand this

  940. as we think

  941. about not

  942. worrying, as we

  943. think about

  944. praying, think

  945. about trusting

  946. God, we need

  947. to understand what

  948. that does mean

  949. and what it

  950. does not mean.

  951. He does a

  952. great way, he

  953. describes that in

  954. a good way.

  955. Look at it.

  956. God does not

  957. promise to rid

  958. your life of

  959. affliction and

  960. difficulty.

  961. Some people will

  962. say that God

  963. will do that.

  964. Some people say

  965. if you just pray

  966. the right prayer,

  967. have the right

  968. kind of faith,

  969. God will do

  970. that.

  971. That's a lie.

  972. That is something

  973. that the devil

  974. came up with

  975. and put in

  976. some, probably

  977. well-meaning

  978. Christian's mind,

  979. that's just

  980. designed to hurt

  981. us, to hinder

  982. us, to weaken

  983. our relationship

  984. with the Lord.

  985. God does not

  986. promise to rid

  987. your life of

  988. affliction and

  989. difficulty.

  990. He does,

  991. however, often

  992. to give you,

  993. offer to give

  994. you the grace

  995. needed to suffer

  996. well.

  997. It isn't wrong

  998. to ask God to

  999. relieve you of

  1000. your pain.

  1001. Certainly it's

  1002. not wrong.

  1003. We should.

  1004. But it is

  1005. more important

  1006. that in the

  1007. midst of the

  1008. pain, you

  1009. rely on the

  1010. promise of

  1011. God to work

  1012. such experiences

  1013. for His glory

  1014. and your good.

  1015. To use these

  1016. times as a

  1017. means of

  1018. perfecting your

  1019. faith, strengthening

  1020. your spirit, and

  1021. transforming your

  1022. life in such a

  1023. way that you are

  1024. becoming more

  1025. like Jesus.

  1026. That's really

  1027. God's goal for

  1028. us.

  1029. And the fact

  1030. is,

  1031. the way that

  1032. we become

  1033. like Jesus

  1034. sometimes requires

  1035. hardship,

  1036. suffering,

  1037. pain.

  1038. Jesus tells us

  1039. there's a better

  1040. way to respond to

  1041. life's hardships

  1042. and uncertainties

  1043. than to worry.

  1044. Let's look at the

  1045. next thing.

  1046. The alternative to

  1047. worry in verses

  1048. 33 and 34.

  1049. Paul last week

  1050. said it was to

  1051. pray.

  1052. Jesus expands

  1053. that.

  1054. He says,

  1055. first of all,

  1056. live with the

  1057. right priorities.

  1058. Look at verse

  1059. 33.

  1060. Seek first the

  1061. kingdom of God

  1062. and His

  1063. righteousness.

  1064. The kingdom of

  1065. God is the

  1066. rule of God.

  1067. In relation to

  1068. us, it means

  1069. that God rules

  1070. or reigns over

  1071. our lives.

  1072. What that means,

  1073. I think one way

  1074. to think about

  1075. this is this.

  1076. We need to seek

  1077. to know and do

  1078. the will of God

  1079. as the first

  1080. priority of our

  1081. life.

  1082. We need to

  1083. seek to know

  1084. and do God's

  1085. will, His way,

  1086. under His

  1087. authority, as the

  1088. first priority of

  1089. our life.

  1090. That implies we

  1091. have a relationship

  1092. with God as our

  1093. Heavenly Father.

  1094. See, Jesus is, in

  1095. the Sermon on the

  1096. Mount, He's

  1097. teaching us, talk

  1098. to God in prayer

  1099. and call Him your

  1100. Heavenly Father.

  1101. Matthew 6, beginning

  1102. in verse 9.

  1103. He's used this

  1104. phrase, your

  1105. Heavenly Father,

  1106. several times in

  1107. this passage we've

  1108. read.

  1109. Jesus is saying,

  1110. seek first the

  1111. kingdom of God,

1112. but make sure He is

  1113. your Father.

  1114. That only comes

  1115. through faith in

  1116. Jesus.

  1117. If you don't have a

  1118. relationship with

  1119. God like this, I

  1120. encourage you to

  1121. begin one now.

  1122. By admitting to

  1123. God you don't have

  1124. it, you don't

  1125. really know Him.

  1126. Turn from your

  1127. sin.

  1128. Put your trust in

  1129. Jesus Christ as

  1130. your Savior.

  1131. Trusting that He

  1132. died on the cross

  1133. for your sins.

  1134. If you need to

  1135. come to Christ, call

  1136. upon Him to save

  1137. you this moment.

  1138. And the Scripture

  1139. says, whoever calls

1140. on the name of the

  1141. Lord will be saved.

  1142. So do that.

  1143. But as a Christian

  1144. now, what are the

  1145. top priorities in

  1146. your life?

  1147. There's a lot of

  1148. things that will be

  1149. on the list.

1150. And I want you to

  1151. understand, Jesus is

  1152. not teaching us in

  1153. this passage when He

  1154. says don't worry

  1155. about what you eat

  1156. and drink and wear

  1157. and all this kind

  1158. of stuff.

  1159. He's not telling us

  1160. to never think about

  1161. or plan how we're

  1162. going to live in

  1163. this world.

  1164. He is not condemning

  1165. anyone who's concerned

  1166. about making a living,

  1167. taking care of your

  1168. family, and those

  1169. kind of practical

  1170. things.

  1171. things.

  1172. The Bible is filled

  1173. with examples and

  1174. Proverbs is filled

  1175. with all kinds of

  1176. little sayings.

  1177. And there's other

  1178. teachings in the Bible.

  1179. Paul talks about it

  1180. quite a bit, actually,

  1181. in some of his

  1182. letters.

  1183. There's a lot of

  1184. things in the Bible

  1185. that stresses the

  1186. importance of work.

  1187. If you don't work,

  1188. you don't eat.

  1189. Save, invest, take

  1190. care of your family.

  1191. It's your responsibility

1192. to take care of your

  1193. family.

  1194. Give to people in

  1195. need.

  1196. Recognize truly needy

  1197. people around you

  1198. and help them.

  1199. It's our responsibility

  1200. as Christians.

  1201. God calls us to

  1202. recognize all these

  1203. kind of things.

  1204. They are important.

  1205. But we need to

  1206. recognize God gives

  1207. us these things,

  1208. gives us these

  1209. abilities, and we're

  1210. supposed to wisely

  1211. manage what God

  1212. gives us.

  1213. But as important as

  1214. all this kind of

  1215. stuff is, like

  1216. working and saving

  1217. and giving and all

  1218. this kind of stuff,

  1219. that's not the

  1220. ultimate priority.

  1221. Seeking after all

  1222. these things should

  1223. not displace knowing

  1224. and loving God and

1225. doing His will in the

  1226. details of life.

  1227. Seeking first the

  1228. kingdom of God, His

  1229. righteousness, His

  1230. holiness, living a

  1231. life characterized

1232. by love and joy and

  1233. peace and patience and

  1234. kindness and goodness

  1235. and faithfulness and

  1236. gentleness and self-control,

1237. living a life of loving

  1238. people and meeting

  1239. people's needs, living a

  1240. holy life ourselves.

1241. This should be a top

  1242. priority, that as we

1243. work and take care of

  1244. our family and help

  1245. people and give and

1246. serve God, we should do

1247. it all in a way that

  1248. we're seeking to honor

1249. God, to do His will, to

  1250. serve other people in

1251. His name, to do what we

  1252. do for His glory.

1253. We can put it that way.

  1254. We will never overcome

1255. worry unless we make our

  1256. relationship with God our

  1257. first priority in life.

  1258. There's just no other

  1259. way.

1260. Let's look at one more

1261. thing Jesus said as an

  1262. alternative to worry.

  1263. Look at verse 34.

1264. Live one day at a time.

1265. Live one day at a time.

  1266. That's just something that

1267. would help us all if we'd

  1268. think about it and

1269. actually try to do it,

  1270. wouldn't it?

1271. Now when you say, He says

1272. verse 34, look at it one

  1273. more time.

  1274. Therefore do not be

  1275. anxious about tomorrow,

  1276. for tomorrow be anxious

  1277. for itself.

1278. Sufficient for the day is

  1279. its own trouble.

1280. Now when Jesus says things

1281. like that, He does not

  1282. mean don't plan for

  1283. tomorrow.

  1284. He doesn't mean don't

  1285. ever think about tomorrow,

  1286. don't ever think about

  1287. the future, don't ever

  1288. plan.

  1289. He's not saying that.

1290. The Apostle Paul was a

  1291. detailed planner.

1292. If you have any doubts,

  1293. read for example his

1294. letter to the Romans, the

1295. book of Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

1296. if you want to write it

  1297. down, Romans 1, 8 through

  1298. 13.

  1299. In Romans chapter 15,

    Romans 15:20–29

  1300. verses 20 through 29.

  1301. Paul made detailed plans

1302. about what he was going to

  1303. do in the future.

  1304. About going to Spain,

1305. going to Rome, and have

  1306. those Christians help him

  1307. become his home church,

  1308. become his sending church.

1309. But Paul always knew, and

1310. he said this in a lot of

1311. his letters, that his plans

1312. were subject to change if

1313. that was not what God

  1314. planned.

  1315. Paul would sometimes say

1316. things like, if the Lord

1317. wills, or if the Lord

1318. permits, he's going to do

  1319. this or do that.

1320. But know what Jesus says

  1321. about tomorrow.

1322. Don't be anxious about it.

  1323. Don't stress over it.

1324. Max Lucado has some helpful

  1325. comments about what Jesus

  1326. said.

1327. He says, God will help you

1328. to deal with whatever hard

1329. things come up when the time

  1330. comes.

1331. And then he goes on to give

1332. some advice with an emphasis

1333. on this phrase, when the time

  1334. comes.

  1335. Look at it.

1336. To the lady who says, I don't

1337. know what I'll do if my

  1338. husband dies.

1339. Lucado responds, you will when

  1340. the time comes.

1341. To the parent who says, when my

1342. children leave the house, I

1343. don't think that I can take it.

1344. Lucado responds, it won't be

1345. easy, but strength will arrive

  1346. when the time comes.

1347. Then he makes one more

  1348. statement.

  1349. The key is this.

  1350. Meet today's problems with

  1351. today's strength.

  1352. Don't start tackling tomorrow's

  1353. problems until tomorrow.

1354. You do not have tomorrow's

  1355. strength yet.

1356. You simply have enough for

  1357. today.

1358. We need to learn to live one

  1359. day at a time.

1360. Plan for the future, but

  1361. understand you don't really

1362. know what's going to happen

  1363. tomorrow.

1364. So we've got to trust God and

1365. make all our plans with a

  1366. phrase, with the understanding,

  1367. if the Lord wills.

1368. Worry is a temptation for all

  1369. of us, but it's never a

  1370. solution to our problems.

1371. Never a solution to the

1372. things that hurt us that we

  1373. fear in life.

1374. Keep in mind, Jesus did not

  1375. say, don't care.

  1376. Don't be concerned.

1377. But he did say, do not worry.

1378. The solution to our problem

1379. and the actual sin of worry

  1380. is to trust God.

1381. I mean, that sounds simple,

  1382. but that's true.

  1383. Trust God.

1384. He knows what we need.

1385. He knows when we need it.

1386. And he is our sovereign God

1387. and heavenly Father who can

1388. meet that need and will at the

  1389. right time.

1390. Number two, develop the right

  1391. priorities.

1392. Make God his will, serving

  1393. his purpose, the first

1394. priority of your life, and

1395. then live one day at a time.

1396. You know, bottom line is

1397. that's all we can do anyway.

1398. We just make life more

1399. stressful when we don't live

1400. one day at a time.

1401. This is the way that Jesus

  1402. teaches us to worry.

1403. It's the only way that will

1404. work, but it will only work

1405. in the life of a person who

1406. has a real relationship with

1407. God as their heavenly Father.

1408. So as we end, I want to

  1409. encourage you.

1410. Make sure that you know God

  1411. as your heavenly Father.

1412. Make sure that you have a

  1413. right relationship with him

  1414. if you're a Christian as your

  1415. heavenly Father.

  1416. Let's pray together.

1417. Father, thank you for not

1418. leaving us in this world and

1419. telling us just do the best we

  1420. can.

1421. But thank you for promising

1422. always to be with us, to

1423. never leave us nor forsake

  1424. us.

1425. Help us to trust you in that.

1426. Help us to learn to bring all

1427. of our concerns to you in

  1428. prayer.

1429. Help us, Father, to make you

  1430. knowing, loving, serving you,

1431. and doing your will our first

  1432. priority above all else.

1433. Help us, Father, to learn to

1434. take everything one day at a

  1435. time.

1436. Help us, Father, to not give in

1437. to the temptation to worry.

1438. And, Father, as we seek to

1439. obey you, we trust that you

1440. will give us the peace that is

  1441. beyond comprehension, that you

1442. promise to your people, that you

1443. promise to give us in place of

1444. worry when we come to you the

  1445. right way.

1446. So now, in an attitude of

1447. prayer, you listen to the Lord

1448. and you obey Him and do what

1449. He's telling you to do and

1450. leave here better prepared to

  1451. not worry this week.

1452. If I could pray with you, I'll

1453. be here at the front, I would be

  1454. happy to do that.

  1455. You come.

1456. You're in the next few

  1457. minutes.

  1458. What do we do?

  1459. I O prelude it now.

  1460. You hold.

1461. Let's take care of myself.

1462. I thinkible times we take all

1463. this week with можно into

  1464. details.

1465. You'll be happy to olduğ Diego

1466. and I will remember something

  1467. about you.

  1468. You husband, baby.

  1469. Take care of yourself.

  1470. Bur Sü are...

  1471. I'm going.

  1472. ...

  1473. Know what We do.

  1474. Thank you,33.

1475. Maybe we read this moment.

1476. And I hope that you

1477. can all love that, I hope that

  1478. I'm trying to review.

  1479. You'll be the right인데,

1480. and we will be the right

  1481. Young, because maybe when

  1482. Go ahead, man where

  1483. the fact is right.

  1484. You can see you.

  1485. We'll follow the answer

1486. and save this week with

  1487. iceberg.

  1488. The CAP that

  1489. us.
