  1. Good job, Clark.

  2. Thank you very much.

  3. What is special about October the 31st?

  4. What happens, okay, Halloween, October the 31st.

  5. First thing that comes into your mind, a lot of people, Halloween.

  6. You know what that says about you, don't you?

  7. You're a pagan.

  8. Absolute pagan for thinking.

  9. October the 31st is all about Halloween.

  10. No, I'm joking.

  11. If you've got a calendar on your calendar,

  12. most likely there's little writing that says October the 31st is Halloween.

  13. But there is a much more significant celebration, observation,

  14. that we should be acknowledging on October the 31st.

  15. What is it?

  16. Somebody say the Reformation?

  17. October the 31st is Reformation Day.

  18. And this year, in 16 more days,

  19. this will be the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

  20. It all began on October the 31st, 1517,

  21. when a Roman Catholic monk by the name of Martin Luther,

  22. I've got to move this or I might break out into song.

  23. And that would clear this building quicker than a fire.

  24. A Roman Catholic monk named Martin Luther

  25. posted his 95 theses

  26. on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany.

  27. Now that was like a community bulletin board.

  28. I'm sure from history or in some place,

  29. you are familiar with Martin Luther posting these 95 theses

  30. on that castle door.

  31. What's not always known is

  32. that was like a community bulletin board.

  33. And Luther posted that to get a discussion started

  34. mainly among scholarly people,

  35. church theologian types.

  36. But what those 95 theses,

  37. what those 95 protests or criticisms were

  38. was of the Roman Catholic practice of selling indulgences.

  39. Now an indulgence was something like a pardon,

  40. a pardon for your sin.

  41. It was a gift of forgiveness granted by the Pope

  42. for a price.

  43. You heard me right.

  44. The Roman Catholic Church was selling,

  45. for all practical purposes,

  46. the forgiveness of sins.

  47. Now you think, well that couldn't happen.

  48. That's not possible.

  49. Well, truly it couldn't really happen,

  50. but they did it.

  51. And the people,

  52. wherever this was done,

  53. people lined up

  54. to buy their way into heaven

  55. or to pay the price

  56. for their relative to get out of purgatory.

  57. That was part of what the indulgences were.

  58. You can buy forgiveness from the Pope,

  59. bypass purgatory,

  60. go straight into heaven.

  61. Or for your relatives.

  62. I mean, you think about it.

  63. If you didn't know any better,

  64. you've got a mother or father,

  65. brother or sister who's died,

  66. and you think they're in purgatory,

  67. which by the way does not exist.

  68. But you're told by the authorities from the church,

  69. if you pay this amount,

  70. you can get them out of purgatory

  71. and on into heaven.

  72. Well, one well-known preacher of that day,

  73. Johann Tetzel,

  74. he went around Germany selling indulgences.

  75. He was a real salesman.

  76. He knew how to attract the crowd.

  77. He had little jingles that he would say or sing.

  78. And one of them,

  79. his most well-known was this.

  80. As soon as the coin in the coffer rings,

  81. the soul from purgatory springs.

  82. And that was not intended to be funny.

  83. That was intended to say to people,

  84. you can buy your way out of purgatory

  85. or your relative's way.

  86. Well, that enraged Luther,

  87. who was a Roman Catholic monk.

  88. But he knew that was not right.

  89. He knew that they were leading people astray.

  90. And so he wrote those 95 articles of protest.

  91. And what he wrote was so well-received

  92. that it was published

  93. and widely circulated.

  94. And Luther's protests

  95. were the sparks that ignited the fire,

  96. the fire of change

  97. that started the Protestant Reformation.

  98. As we are approaching this significant milestone,

  99. the 500th anniversary,

  100. it's important for us to understand

  101. that the Protestant Reformation

  102. was one of the most important,

  103. most significant events,

  104. not just in the history of the church,

  105. but in the history of the world.

  106. Over time,

  107. it changed

  108. not only the religious practices,

  109. but the political, social,

  110. and intellectual practices

  111. of Western civilization.

  112. Now, what I want us to do today

  113. is to focus on the most important contribution

  114. of the Reformation,

  115. really to all the world,

  116. the recovery of the gospel.

  117. Yes, the Protestant Reformation

  118. was what really brought back

  119. to the forefront

  120. the biblical truth

  121. of how a person is made right with God.

  122. What salvation really is,

  123. is by the grace of God

  124. through faith in Jesus Christ.

  125. The underlying problem

  126. in the Roman Catholic Church at that time

  127. was that they lost the gospel.

  128. Or they changed the gospel.

  129. And that's what led to things like

  130. the selling of indulgences.

  131. They were basically teaching

  132. that salvation comes from the church.

  133. And salvation is dependent upon

  134. how good you are,

  135. how righteous you are personally,

  136. what you do,

  137. what you don't do.

  138. Well, the Reformers,

  139. like Luther,

  140. and the other major ones,

  141. like Calvin, Zwingli,

  142. there were many.

  143. The Reformers challenged

  144. those false teachings

  145. by calling attention

  146. to what the Bible said.

  147. They called attention

  148. to what the Scripture

  149. clearly taught

  150. about these matters.

  151. They emphasized

  152. the authority of Scripture

  153. over the authority

  154. of the church.

  155. And they recovered

  156. the biblical gospel

  157. that salvation

  158. has always been

  159. and still is

  160. by the grace of God

  161. through faith in Jesus Christ

  162. plus nothing.

  163. It's all of God.

  164. What He's done for us

  165. in Christ.

  166. And our response

  167. is simply to believe it.

  168. As we prepare to observe

  169. the Lord's Supper this morning,

  170. I want us to look at

  171. the way this discovery

  172. of the gospel

  173. is usually explained.

  174. It was recovery

  175. of the Bible's teaching

  176. about justification.

  177. How we are made right

  178. with God.

  179. If you want to look

  180. in your Bible,

  181. I'm going to put most of this

  182. on the screen,

  183. but look in Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  184. and I want to see

  185. how this important concept

  186. of being declared

  187. right with God,

  188. being justified,

  189. is the only way

  190. that anyone

  191. has ever,

  192. can ever

  193. be made right

  194. with God.

  195. Let's read in Romans 3,

    Romans 3:21

  196. verse 21,

  197. to start with.

  198. 21 through 24.

  199. But now,

  200. apart from the law,

  201. the righteousness of God

  202. has been made known

  203. to which the law

  204. and the prophets testify.

  205. That last phrase,

  206. to which the law

  207. and the prophets testify,

  208. what Paul was writing is,

  209. saying is,

  210. the Old Testament.

  211. The Old Testament writers,

  212. they spoke

  213. about how salvation

  214. comes through faith.

  215. The Old Testament,

  216. where it all begins,

  217. Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  218. Abraham,

  219. the father of all

  220. the faithful.

  221. Abraham believed God,

  222. it says,

  223. and it was credited

  224. to him as righteousness.

  225. Genesis 12

  226. and Genesis 15.

  227. Abraham believed God

  228. and his faith

  229. in God's promise

  230. is the reason God

  231. declared him

  232. to be right.

  233. Not because of what he did,

  234. but because he trusted God.

  235. But now,

  236. look at it again,

  237. verse 21.

  238. But now,

  239. apart from the law,

  240. apart from keeping the law,

  241. apart from you trying

  242. your best

  243. to do what God says,

  244. the righteousness of God,

  245. being right with God,

  246. has been made known

  247. to which the law

  248. and prophets testify,

  249. this righteousness

  250. is given

  251. through faith

  252. in Jesus Christ

  253. to all who believe.

  254. There is no difference

  255. between Jew and Gentile,

  256. for all have sinned

  257. and fall short

  258. of the glory of God,

  259. and all are justified

  260. freely by his grace

  261. through the redemption

  262. that came by Christ Jesus.

  263. Look at verse 28.

  264. For we hold

  265. that one is justified

  266. by faith

  267. apart from works

  268. of the law

  269. or apart from any good works.

  270. Romans 5.1.

  271. Therefore,

  272. since we have been justified

  273. by faith,

  274. declared right with God

  275. by faith,

  276. we have peace with God

  277. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  278. Let's think about it.

  279. What does it mean

  280. to be justified?

  281. Justification is God's response

  282. to our faith

  283. in the Lord Jesus.

  284. That's what we've

  285. just been reading.

  286. Look at a very simple definition

  287. of what justification is,

  288. to be declared righteous,

  289. to be declared right with God.

  290. It is important

  291. that we understand that.

  292. Every person in here,

  293. most every person in here,

  294. has some kind of interest

  295. in being right with God

  296. or you wouldn't be here,

  297. I'm going to guess.

  298. We need to understand

  299. fully, clearly,

  300. what the Bible teaches

  301. about how anyone,

  302. you and me,

  303. can be right with God.

  304. A person who is right with God

  305. is someone who has been

  306. declared right with God

  307. by God Himself.

  308. To be justified

  309. means to be declared righteous,

  310. to be declared right with God.

  311. But let's look at a more

  312. detailed definition

  313. from Wayne Grudem.

  314. He says justification

  315. justification is an instantaneous,

  316. legal act of God

  317. in which He,

  318. number one,

  319. thinks of our sins

  320. as forgiven

  321. and Christ's righteousness

  322. as belonging to us.

  323. And number two,

  324. declares us to be righteous

  325. in His sight.

  326. Let's look at the second part

  327. of that definition first.

  328. Justification is a legal declaration

  329. by God.

  330. justification,

  331. justification,

  332. God declaring

  333. that you are right with Him

  334. is something that God

  335. actually does to us

  336. is not something

  337. that God does to us

  338. but something

  339. that He declares about us.

  340. Justification,

  341. being declared right with God.

  342. That's something

  343. that God declares

  344. is true about us.

  345. It's not something

  346. that He really does

  347. to make us that way.

  348. Now don't misunderstand.

  349. When God saves a person,

  350. He brings about a new birth.

  351. It's called regeneration.

  352. When God saves a person

  353. who turns from their sin

  354. and puts their trust in Jesus

  355. as their Savior,

  356. God brings about

  357. new life,

  358. a new way of looking at life.

  359. He puts His Spirit in us.

  360. So in that way,

  361. we certainly are changed

  362. when we become a Christian.

  363. But we are still sinners.

  364. We're not perfect.

  365. So God declares us to be right

  366. like a judge would declare

  367. someone who stood before Him

  368. guilty or innocent.

  369. Think about it.

  370. A judge would,

  371. if you had to go to court tomorrow

  372. and your case was going to be

  373. before the judge,

  374. he was going to make the decision.

  375. No jury, just the judge.

  376. If He declares that you are not guilty,

  377. then legally you are not guilty,

  378. even if really and truly you are.

  379. If He says you are guilty,

  380. but you really aren't,

  381. legally you're guilty

  382. and you're going to jail.

  383. Justification

  384. is God's declaration.

  385. And whatever God declares,

  386. it's the way it is.

  387. He's the greatest judge.

  388. If God declares that we are right

  389. in His sight,

  390. that means we're no longer guilty.

  391. It means we no longer have to fear judgment

  392. if God declares that we're right.

  393. And unlike a human judge,

  394. God's always right.

  395. He never makes a mistake.

  396. He knows who we are,

  397. how we are,

  398. and when God declares us

  399. to be right with Him

  400. because we're trusting in His Son,

  401. Jesus is our Savior,

  402. we are right with Him.

  403. We are no longer guilty.

  404. Now, a natural question comes up,

  405. how can this be?

  406. I know most everybody in here.

  407. And you know me.

  408. And I know you're not perfect.

  409. And if you have any slight knowledge of me,

  410. you know I'm not perfect.

  411. So how in the world

  412. can we sit here,

  413. stand here,

  414. and think to ourselves,

  415. I'm right with God.

  416. I'm going to heaven when I die.

  417. I'm no longer held responsible for my sin.

  418. When you know well and good

  419. that you are guilty still

  420. of sinning against God,

  421. living life your way instead of His way,

  422. being selfish a lot of the time,

  423. not pleasing God a lot of the time,

  424. well,

  425. here's how it happens.

  426. Our justification,

  427. our being declared right with God

  428. is based on the fact

  429. that we are united with Jesus.

  430. We're one with Him.

  431. He is in us.

  432. We are in Him.

  433. Think about it this way.

  434. When we turn from our sin

  435. and put our faith and trust in Jesus,

  436. from God's perspective,

  437. we are one with Christ.

  438. We are in Him.

  439. In Christ.

  440. Paul uses that little phrase

  441. over and over again in his letters.

  442. That means what Jesus Christ did

  443. in His life and His death,

  444. that's credited to us.

  445. Think about it this way.

  446. Jesus died on the cross

  447. to pay the penalty for our sin.

  448. His death is credited to us

  449. when we trust in Him.

  450. Therefore, we are forgiven.

  451. The penalty for our sin has been paid.

  452. Jesus lived a perfect life.

  453. He perfectly obeyed God,

  454. perfectly obeyed God's law.

  455. So His perfect obedience

  456. is credited to us

  457. when we trust in Him.

  458. Therefore,

  459. that's how we can be right with God.

  460. That's what God declares

  461. our condition to be

  462. by virtue of our faith in Christ.

  463. Look at how Paul says it in Romans 8.1.

  464. There is therefore now

  465. no condemnation for those

  466. who are in Christ Jesus.

  467. Now,

  468. this is maybe hard to grasp hold of,

  469. but you need to understand.

  470. You and me right now,

  471. if we're trusting in Jesus,

  472. we're one with Him.

  473. And even though we are not perfect,

  474. God declares us to be

  475. because of the perfect life of Jesus.

  476. That's credited to us.

  477. We haven't done anything

  478. to suffer for our own sins.

  479. We haven't paid for our own sins.

  480. Jesus did, though,

  481. when He died on the cross.

  482. He suffered the wrath of God against sin.

  483. When we trust in Jesus,

  484. the penalty for our sin has been paid.

  485. Jesus did it for us.

  486. We didn't do anything.

  487. We might picture it like this.

  488. God accepts us

  489. based on Jesus,

  490. on the merit,

  491. the value,

  492. the love He has for Jesus.

  493. Let's put it this way.

  494. Suppose you have a daughter

  495. who marries a man

  496. that you consider

  497. unworthy of her.

  498. And some of you,

  499. I can see it right now,

  500. my daughter did that.

  501. I was originally

  502. going to tell this

  503. in the form of,

  504. suppose you had a son

  505. who married a girl

  506. who was unworthy

  507. of your son.

  508. But I didn't want

  509. my daughters-in-law

  510. to read anything into that.

  511. Because I'm glad

  512. that my daughters-in-law

  513. married my boys

  514. and took them away.

  515. I'm no longer responsible.

  516. They are now responsible.

  517. No, I love my boys

  518. and love my girls.

  519. But I want you

  520. to think with me.

  521. Suppose you have a daughter

  522. or, if it's true,

  523. have a son.

  524. You have a daughter

  525. who marries a man

  526. you consider unworthy of her.

  527. Even though that man

  528. in and of himself

  529. is unworthy,

  530. you receive him

  531. into your family

  532. because of your daughter.

  533. By the way,

  534. that's what good parents

  535. do when at all possible.

  536. When you look at that guy,

  537. you see your daughter's husband.

  538. You focus on your daughter.

  539. He's accepted,

  540. not because of who he is,

  541. what he's done,

  542. but because he is married

  543. to your daughter.

  544. He is united

  545. to your daughter

  546. in marriage.

  547. As Christians,

  548. our acceptance by God,

  549. our forgiveness,

  550. our right standing with him

  551. has absolutely nothing to do

  552. with who we are

  553. or what we've done.

  554. It has every single thing

  555. to do with

  556. who Jesus is

  557. and what Jesus

  558. has done

  559. for us.

  560. none of us

  561. can undo our past.

  562. None of us

  563. can start right now

  564. being perfect.

  565. But the good thing is

  566. we don't have to.

  567. If we have truly

  568. repented of our sin,

  569. we hate it,

  570. we've turned from it,

  571. we've put our trust

  572. in Jesus'

  573. absolute confidence.

  574. He paid the penalty

  575. for our sins

  576. when he died on the cross.

  577. We're trusting him

  578. and him alone

  579. for our salvation.

  580. That our sins

  581. are forgiven.

  582. He paid the penalty.

  583. We are accepted by God.

  584. We are right with God

  585. because Jesus is perfect.

  586. And that is credited

  587. to us.

  588. The importance

  589. of this Reformation's

  590. emphasis on

  591. justification by faith

  592. cannot be overstated.

  593. The fact that God

  594. accepts us

  595. when we are

  596. united to Jesus

  597. by faith

  598. means

  599. some very important things

  600. that we need to think about

  601. right now

  602. just quickly.

  603. Number one,

  604. we can have confidence

  605. that our sins are forgiven.

  606. You can be certain

  607. right now

  608. if you are united

  609. to Jesus in faith

  610. your sins

  611. are forgiven

  612. because of him.

  613. You don't have to worry

  614. about being good enough

  615. for God.

  616. You aren't.

  617. I'm not.

  618. And never will be.

  619. But God accepts us

  620. based on

  621. the perfect life

  622. of Jesus

  623. and not our own.

  624. And this means,

  625. listen to this,

  626. we can offer genuine hope

  627. to the worst

  628. of sinners.

  629. No matter what a person

  630. has done,

  631. they can be forgiven,

  632. made right with God,

  633. accepted by God

  634. because it's Jesus.

  635. Think with me for a moment.

  636. What if this morning

  637. you think about it personally,

  638. the worst human being

  639. you know

  640. was standing right there.

  641. The absolute worst,

  642. sorriest,

  643. low down,

  644. sinful person you know

  645. on the face of the earth

  646. was standing right there.

  647. And over here

  648. is the best,

  649. most kind

  650. and gracious

  651. human being

  652. you know

  653. standing right there.

  654. If they both

  655. were standing there

  656. and they looked up

  657. and said to us,

  658. I'm not a Christian.

  659. But I right now

  660. want to turn from my sin,

  661. admit it,

  662. I hate it,

  663. I'm sorry,

  664. I truly trust

  665. that Jesus died for me.

  666. I'm counting on him

  667. and him alone

  668. for my salvation.

  669. God would save them both

  670. the exact same way

  671. they don't,

  672. either one deserve it.

  673. It's by his grace.

  674. He's going to save them

  675. because they're trusting in Jesus.

  676. Jesus lived a perfect life.

  677. Even the best person you know

  678. is not perfect.

  679. And Jesus paid the penalty

  680. for the worst person you know sins.

  681. That's how we all

  682. come to faith in Christ.

  683. That's how we all

  684. experience salvation

  685. or rightness with God

  686. if we are Christians.

  687. So when you partake

  688. of those elements

  689. of the Lord's Supper

  690. this morning,

  691. you think about what

  692. God has done

  693. for you in Christ.

  694. You think about Jesus

  695. giving up his life

  696. to die for you.

  697. But also you think about

  698. how he lived

  699. a perfect life

  700. in this world

  701. for you.

  702. Let this be a time

  703. of real worship

  704. and thanksgiving

  705. before God.

  706. And if you're not a Christian,

  707. right now I encourage you

  708. if you want to be different,

  709. you want God to save you,

  710. you're tired of living

  711. for yourself,

  712. you will turn from your sin.

  713. If you will do that

  714. and put your trust in Jesus

  715. and call upon him

  716. to save you,

  717. he will.

  718. And let's just all

  719. bow together right now

  720. and I want to encourage you

  721. if you're not a Christian

  722. call upon Jesus

  723. to save you,

  724. trust him.

  725. He will.

  726. If you are a Christian,

  727. thank God

  728. for what he has done

  729. for you.

  730. Thank him

  731. for the salvation

  732. that is yours

  733. as a gift of his grace

  734. through faith in Jesus,

  735. his perfect life

  736. and his death on the cross

  737. for your sins.

  738. Let's all pray together.

  739. Dear God,

  740. help us now

  741. to respond to you

  742. appropriately.

  743. Help every Christian

  744. in here to prepare

  745. to observe

  746. the Lord's Supper

  747. together.

  748. and in an attitude

  749. of prayer,

  750. let's get ready

  751. to do that.

  752. Thank you.
