  1. Good morning.

  2. Praise God for your mission's involvement.

  3. You know, we live far away from here,

  4. but as you pray, you're right there with us.

  5. So, stories I'll be telling today

  6. about the wonderful things God is doing,

  7. even though you live this far away,

  8. as you pray, you give,

  9. and sometimes go directly to the field,

  10. you're right there with those of us who are on the field.

  11. We have now served in Southeast Asia,

  12. myself, and my family.

  13. We're in our 20th year.

  14. You know, and sometimes it's good to come back

  15. and get a checkup.

  16. Notice the title of today's sermon,

  17. Have We Lost Our Minds?

  18. Have We Lost Our Minds?

  19. Maybe you've asked yourself that same question.

  20. 20 years ago, when we started going to the process

  21. of going overseas,

  22. we were asked, in fact, my wife was asked,

  23. you know, where are you feel led to go,

  24. and she said, anywhere but a Muslim country.

  25. And, of course, that's where God sent us.

  26. And we had no idea how to reach those folks.

  27. In fact, for the early years,

  28. I was in seminary education,

  29. and also helping Baptist churches like yours

  30. open cell groups to reach their neighbors,

  31. and praise God, some came to faith.

  32. But then, in late 2004,

  33. we were asked to engage a large,

  34. unreached Muslim people group.

  35. And so we went from knowing kind of what to do

  36. in the seminary and in a traditional church setting

  37. to not having any idea what to do.

  38. And so we found people to pray,

  39. people like yourselves.

  40. And I personally began praying desperate prayers

  41. to the Lord for our people group.

  42. What seemed to be an impossible task.

  43. God is doing amazing things.

  44. Tens of thousands of Muslims have come to faith

  45. in our people group,

  46. and are reaching others throughout our country of service

  47. and throughout Southeast Asia.

  48. We didn't get any smarter.

  49. In fact, we went back to plan A, Acts.

  50. How was the gospel shared in Acts?

  51. And we began sharing the gospel a lot that way.

  52. When people came to faith and were baptized,

  53. just like in Acts,

  54. they would go home and gather their friends

  55. and their families,

  56. believe the gospel,

  57. and become churches in those areas.

  58. We began calling this approach

  59. anyone, anywhere, anytime, any three.

  60. So we're no smarter than we were.

  61. We're simply trying to abide in Christ

  62. as the Lord taught us,

  63. and simply obey the Great Commission

  64. the way it was obeyed in Acts.

  65. And it's interesting that God's plan

  66. works a lot better than ours.

  67. God truly is doing amazing things.

  68. Next slide, please.

  69. Has anyone ever been to Southeast Asia?

  70. Did you try this fruit while you were there?

  71. We call it the durian.

  72. You tried it.

  73. So you can verify what I'm getting ready to say.

  74. If you watch programs

  75. about the world's worst food,

  76. this one's always on it.

  77. Usually top five.

  78. Called the spiked fruit.

  79. Literal translation,

  80. durian,

  81. means spiked fruit

  82. because of these spikes,

  83. these goads that it has on it.

  84. It's a heavy fruit,

  85. and sometimes it falls off a tree.

  86. And when it hits people,

  87. sometimes they die.

  88. This fruit has been known to kill people

  89. when it falls off and hits them in the head.

  90. It smells terrible.

  91. It smells that bad,

  92. good sign that it's not meant to be eaten.

  93. But somebody tried it and liked it,

  94. and the people that we serve

  95. really enjoy this fruit.

  96. In fact, they'll give a day's wage for it.

  97. Had some volunteers who came over,

  98. and they'd seen on one of these stations

  99. about how bad it was,

  100. and they said it couldn't be that bad.

  101. So I found them one,

  102. and I opened it up and gave it to them,

  103. and their countenance immediately turned.

  104. Said it tastes like dirty socks.

  105. By the way, it smells like dirty socks.

  106. Once again, my kids like this fruit,

  107. and the people we serve like it,

  108. which might be a good sign.

  109. You know, they might need some help, right?

  110. Might need some help.

  111. Of course I'm teasing.

  112. If you enjoy this fruit,

  113. good for you.

  114. My kids do too.

  115. Today's sermon is about

  116. a time when Paul,

  117. the apostle,

  118. was standing before the king

  119. giving an account of why,

  120. even though he was persecuted tremendously,

  121. why did he keep on

  122. proclaiming the gospel?

  123. Thirteen years after Paul came to faith,

  124. he went on three missionary journeys

  125. totaling nine years,

  126. including the time that he was back in Antioch.

  127. God did amazing things.

  128. His presence was there

  129. in real and very sweet ways,

  130. but it wasn't easy.

  131. Most of us had never gotten beaten up

  132. because we shared the gospel.

  133. I've been threatened.

  134. I would have gotten beaten up.

  135. A guy had a baseball bat,

  136. or a version of one,

  137. but praise God,

  138. God delivered me from that situation.

  139. Paul said,

  140. I've been beaten times without number.

  141. You've been beaten a lot

  142. if you can't count many times,

  143. how many times you've been beaten up.

  144. So I was in danger from my countrymen,

  145. friend from the Jews.

  146. He said,

  147. I was in danger

  148. from natural situations,

  149. rivers,

  150. he said,

  151. oceans.

  152. I spent nights out at the sea.

  153. times without number,

  154. he could tell about

  155. the times where people tried to kill it.

  156. So God did great things through Paul

  157. as he proclaimed a simple message.

  158. Jesus Christ died for our sins

  159. and was raised from the dead.

  160. And whoever you are,

  161. if we will repent of our sin

  162. and surrender ourselves to Jesus,

  163. believing this great news,

  164. our sins are forgiven.

  165. The message changed Paul's life

  166. and he was commissioned

  167. to share it with others

  168. and he did that.

  169. So that now,

  170. he is before the king.

  171. Nine years of missionary journeys

  172. and after nine years

  173. of missionary journeys,

  174. he was standing in the temple

  175. in Jerusalem.

  176. He proclaimed

  177. the great news of the gospel

  178. and he said,

  179. he spoke of a time

  180. when Jesus Christ

  181. revealed himself to Paul

  182. and he said,

  183. I'm sending you away,

  184. far away,

  185. to the Gentiles.

  186. The Jews were God's chosen people

  187. and they said,

  188. salvation is for us.

  189. But when they considered

  190. that God might care enough

  191. about people who weren't Jews,

  192. the Gentiles,

  193. everybody else,

  194. to save them too,

  195. a riot broke out.

  196. It led to a two-year imprisonment

  197. for Paul

  198. and now here's Paul once again.

  199. Before the king,

  200. defending the fact that he would

  201. at whatever cost

  202. proclaim the gospel.

  203. And as he's before the king,

  204. he gives a testimony

  205. that we'll read in a moment,

  206. but just like when he was before

  207. in the temple,

  208. he made a similar statement.

  209. If you read verse 23,

  210. Acts 26, verse 23,

    Acts 26:23

  211. he talked about Jesus

  212. saying that the Christ

  213. was to suffer

  214. and by reason of his resurrection

  215. from the dead,

  216. he would be the first

  217. that proclaimed light

  218. both to the Jewish people

  219. and to the Gentiles.

  220. There's that phrase again.

  221. God wants to save everybody

  222. who will receive his gospel.

  223. While Paul was saying this

  224. in his defense,

  225. Festus said in a loud voice,

  226. Paul, you're out of your mind.

  227. You're out of your mind.

  228. Your much learning

  229. is driving you mad.

  230. And Paul said,

  231. I'm not out of my mind,

  232. most excellent Festus,

  233. but I utter words

  234. of sober truth

  235. for the king knows these matters

  236. and I speak to him

  237. with all confidence

  238. since I am persuaded

  239. that none of these things

  240. escape his notice

  241. for this has not been done

  242. in a corner.

  243. King Agrippa,

  244. do you believe the prophets?

  245. I know that you do.

  246. Agrippa replied to Paul

  247. in a short time

  248. will you persuade me

  249. to be a Christian?

  250. And Paul said,

  251. I would wish to God

  252. that whether in a short

  253. or long time

  254. that not only you

  255. but all who hear me this day

  256. might become such as I am

  257. except for these chains.

  258. So essentially,

  259. the accusation against Paul is

  260. you've lost your mind

  261. that having been beaten

  262. times without number,

  263. having been shipwrecked,

  264. having faced all these things

  265. and riots breaking out

  266. wherever you go

  267. because you proclaim

  268. this message,

  269. you've lost your mind

  270. and Paul said,

  271. I've not lost my mind.

  272. Does it make sense?

  273. It does.

  274. And what Paul said is,

  275. why?

  276. What he was answering was,

  277. why does it make sense

  278. to obey the Great Commission

  279. at any cost?

  280. Let's pray.

  281. So Lord Jesus,

  282. we love you.

  283. We praise you

  284. because you've died

  285. for our sins

  286. and you're alive.

  287. You've changed our lives.

  288. We praise you

  289. for your presence,

  290. that you're always with us

  291. and you always will be.

  292. And so Lord,

  293. now in these brief moments

  294. together,

  295. I pray that you'll open

  296. our hearts

  297. and our minds.

  298. Show us

  299. what you're calling us

  300. to sacrifice

  301. to be involved with you

  302. in your Great Commission.

  303. And Lord,

  304. I pray that you'll use

  305. our witness

  306. so that many

  307. will come to know you,

  308. worship you,

  309. and be saved

  310. for all eternity.

  311. In Jesus' name we pray.

  312. Amen.

  313. So Paul made his defense

  314. before the king.

  315. And here's how it starts

  316. if you read in Acts chapter 26.

    Acts 26 chapter mention

  317. After saying

  318. that he was going

  319. to Damascus

  320. to persecute believers

  321. in verse 11

  322. and verse 12,

  323. he says,

  324. Well,

  325. I was so engaged

  326. as I was journeying

  327. to Damascus

  328. with the authority

  329. and commission

  330. of the chief priests.

  331. At midday,

  332. O King,

  333. I saw on the way

  334. a light from heaven

  335. brighter than the sun

  336. shining all around me

  337. and those who were

  338. journeying with me.

  339. And when we'd all

  340. fall into the ground,

  341. I heard a voice

  342. saying to me

  343. in the Hebrew dialect,

  344. Saul,

  345. Saul,

  346. why are you persecuting me?

  347. Is it hard for you

  348. to kick against the goads?

  349. And I said,

  350. Who are you, Lord?

  351. And the Lord said,

  352. I'm Jesus whom you are persecuting.

  353. But get up

  354. and stand on your feet

  355. for this purpose

  356. I have appeared to you

  357. to appoint you

  358. as a minister

  359. and a witness

  360. not only to the things

  361. which you've seen

  362. but also to the things

  363. which I will appear to you,

  364. rescuing you

  365. from the Jewish people

  366. and from the Gentiles

  367. to whom I'm sending you

  368. to open their eyes

  369. so they may turn

  370. from darkness to light

  371. and from the dominion

  372. of Satan to God

  373. that they may receive

  374. forgiveness of sins

  375. and an inheritance

  376. among those

  377. who have been sanctified

  378. by faith in me.

  379. So King Agrippa,

  380. I did not prove disobedient

  381. to the heavenly vision

  382. but kept declaring

  383. both to those

  384. of Damascus first

  385. and also to Jerusalem

  386. and then throughout

  387. all the region of Judea

  388. and even to the Gentiles

  389. that they should repent

  390. and turn to God

  391. performing deeds

  392. appropriate to repentance.

  393. For this reason

  394. some Jews seized me

  395. in the temple

  396. and tried to put me to death.

  397. So having obtained

  398. help from God

  399. I stand to this day

  400. testifying both

  401. to small and to great

  402. stating nothing

  403. but what the prophets

  404. and Moses said

  405. was going to take place

  406. that the Christ

  407. was to suffer

  408. and by reason

  409. of his resurrection

  410. that he would be

  411. the first

  412. to proclaim light

  413. both to the Jewish people

  414. and to the Gentiles.

  415. That's when

  416. the governor

  417. Festus

  418. in the presence

  419. of the king

  420. made the accusation

  421. Paul you've lost your mind.

  422. But actually

  423. it made perfect sense

  424. Paul said

  425. first of all

  426. because of God's holiness

  427. when a person

  428. sees the holiness

  429. of God

  430. it makes perfect sense

  431. first of all

  432. to receive the gospel

  433. as a way

  434. to have our sins forgiven

  435. and then

  436. to proclaim the gospel

  437. to others.

  438. For Paul

  439. that's what happened.

  440. Having received this vision

  441. he believed

  442. was baptized

  443. and immediately

  444. the scripture says

  445. began proclaiming

  446. the gospel to others.

  447. It wasn't long ago

  448. we had an eclipse

  449. and everybody

  450. had the warning

  451. don't look at the sun.

  452. Besides me

  453. who else took a look?

  454. Alright

  455. you still see spots.

  456. Praise God

  457. my spots only lasted

  458. a few hours.

  459. But that's what happens

  460. when you look at the sun

  461. and that was only impartial

  462. that was only impartial

  463. glory because it was

  464. covered up right?

  465. Imagine looking

  466. intently to the sun

  467. for a long period

  468. of time.

  469. Paul got a

  470. in some ways

  471. not total

  472. you can't get a total

  473. glimpse

  474. but he got a full glimpse

  475. of the glory of God

  476. and it changed his life

  477. forever.

  478. As I was looking

  479. I was watching

  480. the eclipse on CNN

  481. after I took a look

  482. there was a CNN

  483. reporter

  484. when he saw

  485. the glory

  486. of what was taking place

  487. he said

  488. oh my God

  489. look at that.

  490. Probably didn't

  491. believe in God

  492. but he couldn't

  493. escape the fact

  494. of God's glory

  495. the glory of God

  496. being revealed

  497. and whether or not

  498. God reveals himself

  499. to you

  500. like he did to Paul

  501. the heavens declare

  502. the glory of God.

  503. God is holy

  504. and one day

  505. we will stand

  506. before a holy God.

  507. Not too long ago

  508. I was sitting

  509. with an imam

  510. what's an imam?

  511. Well it's a Muslim

  512. pastor

  513. so imagine

  514. Pastor Fred

  515. with a hat on

  516. you know

  517. little round hat

  518. that's the kind

  519. of person

  520. we're talking about

  521. here's what he said

  522. he said

  523. for more than

  524. 40 years

  525. five times a day

  526. I prayed to God

  527. show me the straight

  528. way in the Arabic

  529. language

  530. and I meant it

  531. I really wanted to know

  532. so every day

  533. I would just keep

  534. praying

  535. show me the straight

  536. way

  537. show me the straight

  538. way

  539. after more than

  540. 40 years

  541. he said

  542. I was standing

  543. on my back porch

  544. one day

  545. and it was cloudy

  546. outside

  547. a light from heaven

  548. came into me

  549. and I knew

  550. that was Jesus

  551. so I went

  552. and tried to find

  553. a Christian pastor

  554. and I found one

  555. and he was afraid

  556. of me

  557. he didn't want

  558. to talk to me

  559. he said

  560. here's a Bible

  561. that tells you

  562. about Jesus

  563. now go home

  564. so I began

  565. reading in the Bible

  566. Genesis

  567. Exodus

  568. Leviticus

  569. because of course

  570. those books

  571. were written

  572. a long time

  573. before Jesus

  574. came

  575. they tell clearly

  576. about Jesus

  577. but don't use

  578. his name

  579. but the man

  580. said

  581. we'll call him

  582. Ahmad

  583. Ahmad said

  584. I didn't see

  585. Jesus name there

  586. so I was offended

  587. I thought I'd

  588. been lied to

  589. so I went and

  590. got firewood

  591. and kerosene

  592. I was going

  593. to burn the Bible

  594. but before I did

  595. he said

  596. a voice said

  597. to me

  598. put your finger

  599. in

  600. he said

  601. I did

  602. and opened

  603. to John

    John 14:6

  604. chapter 14

  605. verse 6

  606. where Jesus

  607. cried

  608. he said

  609. I am the way

  610. the truth

  611. and the life

  612. no one comes

  613. to the Father

  614. but through me

  615. when this man

  616. saw a glimpse

  617. of God's glory

  618. he knew the gospel

  619. was true

  620. he's one of hundreds

  621. of these imams

  622. who have now

  623. come to faith

  624. they've given

  625. their life to Jesus

  626. and they're reaching

  627. many others

  628. with the gospel

  629. tens of thousands

  630. of ordinary people

  631. who were simply

  632. following the way

  633. of their former religion

  634. in ignorance

  635. like many of us

  636. before we came

  637. to know Jesus

  638. have now turned

  639. to Jesus

  640. and are worshipping

  641. Jesus Christ

  642. as Lord

  643. but we understand

  644. God's holiness

  645. it makes perfect sense

  646. no matter what the cost

  647. that we'll proclaim

  648. the gospel to others

  649. so as Paul

  650. was talking about

  651. this vision

  652. of the Lord Jesus

  653. he had had

  654. at midday

  655. he saw a lot

  656. bright lighter

  657. than the sun

  658. perhaps the governor

  659. said Paul

  660. it was midday

  661. how do you know

  662. you saw a light

  663. no

  664. this is no

  665. ordinary light

  666. we all fell down

  667. and he probably

  668. could still show

  669. show the scars

  670. on his eyes

  671. from that encounter

  672. it makes sense

  673. when we understand

  674. the holiness of God

  675. to proclaim the gospel

  676. now people sometimes

  677. look at me

  678. and say

  679. that's easy for you Mike

  680. because you're an evangelist

  681. if you just knew

  682. how funny that was

  683. you just knew

  684. how funny that was

  685. I laughed out loud

  686. the first time

  687. somebody said that

  688. as a young man

  689. being backward

  690. and shy

  691. introverted

  692. Christ changed my life

  693. and then he called me

  694. to proclaim the gospel

  695. to others

  696. and I would not do it

  697. for about a year

  698. until he spoke

  699. clearly to my heart

  700. saying Mike

  701. are you willing

  702. to be responsible

  703. when you haven't

  704. shared the gospel

  705. with people

  706. if they perish

  707. now I can't save them

  708. I know that

  709. I know that God

  710. draws people to salvation

  711. that's not our job

  712. but

  713. we have a glorious gift

  714. the great salvation

  715. of Jesus

  716. and if we're ashamed

  717. to share it

  718. there will be

  719. a responsibility

  720. involved

  721. my heart melted

  722. and I began

  723. proclaiming the gospel

  724. it was awkward

  725. it was tense

  726. but then the Lord

  727. taught me

  728. and now it's funny

  729. that he uses us

  730. to train people

  731. around the world

  732. to reach Muslims

  733. with the gospel

  734. but God's holiness

  735. made it make sense

  736. and Paul was

  737. as he continued

  738. to talk about

  739. this vision he had

  740. of the Lord Jesus

  741. he referred to

  742. the Gentiles

  743. helplessness

  744. the Lord said

  745. Paul I'm sending you

  746. to the Gentiles

  747. by the way

  748. Gentiles are everyone

  749. who aren't Jews

  750. so that covers

  751. about all of us

  752. the Jews

  753. and the Gentiles

  754. so I'm sending you

  755. to open their eyes

  756. you see they're blind

  757. they're not dumb

  758. they're blind

  759. and when their eyes

  760. are open

  761. they're going to turn

  762. from darkness

  763. to light

  764. they're going to turn

  765. from the enemy

  766. of Satan

  767. to God

  768. they're going to have

  769. forgiveness of sins

  770. and now they're going

  771. to have an inheritance

  772. but for now

  773. they're helpless

  774. missing all of the above

  775. as we serve

  776. in the world's largest

  777. Muslim country

  778. 85% of all the population

  779. and far more than

  780. 99% of the people

  781. that we serve

  782. they're Muslims

  783. they worship in

  784. mosques

  785. like these

  786. now as we've learned

  787. how to share the gospel

  788. anyone anywhere

  789. anytime

  790. we simply get to know

  791. people

  792. and transition

  793. almost all religions

  794. are alike

  795. now by the way

  796. all religions are not alike

  797. but almost all of them are

  798. we're trying to please God

  799. and get our sins forgiven

  800. and we're all

  801. but we're all

  802. and we're all sinners

  803. and at that point

  804. we'll ask Muslims

  805. so what are you doing

  806. to get your sins forgiven

  807. what are you doing

  808. to get your sins forgiven

  809. and they'll say

  810. well we pray

  811. five times a day

  812. and sometimes

  813. if they're really good

  814. they'll add extra prayers

  815. in there

  816. we pray five times a day

  817. we give alms

  818. and we pay a tithe of sorts

  819. at the mosque

  820. we fast

  821. 30 days a year

  822. during Ramadan

  823. from the time the sun comes up

  824. to the time the sun goes down

  825. and the hope is

  826. that they will go

  827. on the pilgrimage

  828. to Mecca

  829. at some time in their life

  830. so we ask them

  831. what are you doing

  832. and many times

  833. they'll proudly tell us

  834. these things

  835. these are our acts of worship

  836. and then we simply ask them

  837. are your sins forgiven yet

  838. no not yet

  839. only God knows

  840. well when

  841. when will your sins

  842. be forgiven

  843. they say

  844. I don't know

  845. well how about

  846. on judgment day

  847. will your sins

  848. be forgiven then

  849. and they say

  850. only God knows

  851. but if God wills it

  852. I hope so

  853. they're blind

  854. they're blind

  855. and many times though

  856. as we hear them

  857. say this out loud

  858. they hear themselves

  859. say

  860. that I'm

  861. here's all this stuff

  862. that I'm doing

  863. I have no assurance

  864. I do not know

  865. the gospel sounds

  866. really good

  867. so when we say

  868. what I believe is different

  869. I know my sins

  870. are forgiven

  871. not because I'm a good person

  872. although I try

  873. my sins are forgiven

  874. because God himself

  875. made a way for our sins

  876. to be forgiven

  877. now they listen

  878. the gospel sounds

  879. really good

  880. but they're living

  881. in darkness

  882. enslaved to the enemy

  883. even though

  884. they have these strong

  885. religious beliefs

  886. they're still afraid

  887. of the spirits

  888. they live with superstitions

  889. that control their lives

  890. we don't go out at night

  891. because we're afraid

  892. of the spirits

  893. there's a ravine

  894. behind our house

  895. where there's a

  896. tale of a spirit being

  897. a white tiger

  898. that lives back there

  899. they won't cross the bridge

  900. they'll go the long way around

  901. to avoid

  902. to avoid contact

  903. every feature

  904. of their lives

  905. controlled by their superstition

  906. because they're afraid

  907. of the spirit world

  908. by the way

  909. if you and I

  910. could see the spirit world

  911. and we didn't know

  912. Jesus Christ

  913. as our savior

  914. we should be afraid to

  915. I could tell you stories

  916. real stories

  917. of how spiritual manifestations

  918. have taken place

  919. among the people we serve

  920. like a man

  921. he said

  922. I was sleeping

  923. I was sleeping one

  924. no he said

  925. I was in bed one night

  926. and I was raised

  927. out of my bed

  928. several feet

  929. and he said

  930. Michael wasn't dreaming

  931. I wasn't dreaming

  932. I was being choked

  933. but now this guy's a believer

  934. now and he said

  935. I called out to Jesus

  936. like you taught us

  937. you know

  938. submit yourself to God

  939. resist the devil

  940. call out to the savior

  941. and win the victory

  942. he said I went straight

  943. to the mattress

  944. I fell straight down

  945. now when they come

  946. to know Jesus

  947. things change for them

  948. but

  949. they're under the

  950. they're under the fear

  951. of the spirits

  952. and it causes them

  953. to be very superstitious

  954. doing everything possible

  955. to try to appease

  956. the spirits

  957. they have no forgiveness

  958. of sin

  959. and no assurance

  960. of eternal life

  961. the Gentiles are hopeless

  962. apart from Christ

  963. so Paul said

  964. it makes perfect sense

  965. when these folks

  966. are blind

  967. and we have the cure

  968. for their blindness

  969. so that

  970. they will be in the light

  971. instead of darkness

  972. so that they will be

  973. in the savior's

  974. domain

  975. instead of the domain

  976. of the enemy

  977. so they'll have forgiveness

  978. of sin

  979. and so they'll have

  980. eternal life

  981. pardon me king

  982. but it makes perfect sense

  983. for us to share

  984. the gospel with them

  985. it makes perfect sense

  986. and then Paul refers

  987. to the phrase

  988. where Jesus

  989. when he was revealing

  990. himself to him

  991. he said

  992. I'm going to rescue you

  993. I'm going to rescue you

  994. both from the Jews

  995. and the Gentiles

  996. I told you earlier

  997. about the dangers

  998. that Paul faced

  999. beatings without number

  1000. dangers from rivers

  1001. and oceans

  1002. and all those things

  1003. angry Jews

  1004. and angry Gentiles

  1005. but God rescued him

  1006. from all of those

  1007. so here he is

  1008. before the king

  1009. so we're talking

  1010. 24 years from his

  1011. profession of faith

  1012. saying

  1013. God did that

  1014. he rescued me

  1015. from all these things

  1016. sometimes we're

  1017. in dangerous places

  1018. and especially

  1019. these new believers

  1020. I'll tell you stories

  1021. of the dangerous

  1022. situations

  1023. that they're in

  1024. but let's go

  1025. to the next slide

  1026. God's help

1027. but God has helped us

  1028. and he's helped them

  1029. flying on some

  1030. Asian airlines

  1031. is good for your

  1032. prayer life

1033. I can tell you stories

  1034. I had a situation

  1035. just the other day

  1036. I was on a plane

  1037. flying from

  1038. Kuala Lumpur

  1039. and the thing

  1040. started shaking

1041. like I was on the

  1042. inside of a

  1043. washing machine

  1044. it was just

  1045. but by God's grace

1046. the Lord goes with us

1047. I simply raised my hand

  1048. and said

  1049. Lord Jesus help us

  1050. peace

  1051. be still

  1052. and it calmed down

  1053. you say

  1054. I would have calmed

  1055. down anyway

  1056. well you try that

  1057. I'm going with

  1058. the Lord Jesus

  1059. he's helped us

  1060. too many times

  1061. along the way

1062. to take it for granted

1063. and it gave me a chance

  1064. I've been praying

  1065. for the Muslim lady

  1066. next to me

  1067. you know that's kind

  1068. of awkward

  1069. talking to a Muslim

  1070. lady anyway

  1071. but because of that

  1072. situation I was able

  1073. to share the gospel

  1074. with her

  1075. I've been praying

  1076. for her during the

  1077. trip

  1078. Lord this is kind

  1079. of awkward

1080. help me share the gospel

1081. I was able to do that

  1082. because of that

  1083. because of that

  1084. experience

  1085. but the Lord

  1086. does rescue us

  1087. now Paul said

1088. by the help of God

1089. by the help of God

  1090. all these things

  1091. have been accomplished

  1092. and now I'm standing

  1093. before you

  1094. he's talking about

  1095. all the things

  1096. the Lord had done

  1097. through the missionary

  1098. journeys

  1099. to bring the Gentiles

  1100. to himself

  1101. so they can believe

  1102. and be saved

  1103. the formation of churches

  1104. multiplying

  1105. and the great miracles

  1106. of God

1107. by the help of God

  1108. I'm standing before you

  1109. today

  1110. is what Paul

  1111. was saying

  1112. I told you earlier

  1113. about how we

  1114. transitioned

  1115. from seminary

  1116. type work

  1117. to reaching

  1118. a large

  1119. unreached

  1120. Muslim people

  1121. group

  1122. as we sought

  1123. the Lord

  1124. in desperate

  1125. prayer

  1126. myself

  1127. and my ministry

  1128. partner

  1129. in many churches

  1130. like yourselves

  1131. we had a plan

  1132. but no believers

  1133. mentioned that earlier

  1134. and so we decided

  1135. to share the gospel

  1136. like Jesus did

  1137. by the well

  1138. but with the content

  1139. they used in Acts

  1140. it was kind of

  1141. that's kind of

  1142. the mixture

  1143. very relational way

  1144. meet somebody

  1145. say hi

  1146. share the gospel

  1147. with them

  1148. and then simply

  1149. ask them

  1150. do you believe

  1151. what I've told you

  1152. or not

  1153. if they're angry

  1154. or if they just

  1155. simply back out

  1156. they weren't angry much

  1157. they just backed out

  1158. they probably aren't

  1159. open yet

  1160. but we're looking

  1161. for those signs

  1162. of openness

  1163. and then we'd

  1164. simply follow up

  1165. using sacrifice

  1166. stories from the

  1167. Old Testament

  1168. Sunday school stories

  1169. that many of you

  1170. have already learned

1171. so we began this work

  1172. in let's say

  1173. late 2004

  1174. by August

  1175. there were no

  1176. believers

  1177. but

  1178. in August 2004

  1179. we met a man

  1180. named Tom Eder

  1181. shared the gospel

  1182. with him

  1183. he said

  1184. this is great news

  1185. I've got lots

  1186. of friends

  1187. that need to hear

  1188. this

  1189. more than 50

  1190. 10 days later

  1191. he led his good

  1192. friend Heidi

  1193. to faith

  1194. they began

  1195. sharing the gospel

  1196. wherever they went

  1197. now some people

  1198. were believing

  1199. others were

  1200. becoming angry

  1201. at times

  1202. they would get

  1203. called to the

  1204. police station

  1205. Tom Eder

  1206. was called

  1207. to the police

  1208. station

  1209. and threatened

  1210. for 15 years

  1211. in jail

  1212. if he kept

  1213. proclaiming the gospel

  1214. so he proclaimed

  1215. the gospel

  1216. in the police

  1217. station

  1218. and from that

  1219. meeting

  1220. two policemen

  1221. were baptized

  1222. Heidi had his

  1223. electricity cut off

  1224. for two months

  1225. and for two months

  1226. was having a house

  1227. church meeting

  1228. in his home

  1229. but after a year

  1230. 300 Muslims

  1231. had come to faith

  1232. and more than

  1233. as 27 or so

  1234. house churches

  1235. began to form

  1236. in 2006

  1237. a volunteer team

  1238. from North Carolina

  1239. came and worked

  1240. with us

  1241. they shared the gospel

  1242. like we did

  1243. people of like mind

1244. led a man to faith

  1245. we'll call him

  1246. Ali

  1247. Ali came to faith

  1248. our team baptized him

  1249. and trained him

  1250. and finally resulted

  1251. in more than

  1252. 100 churches

  1253. now it wasn't easy

  1254. for Ali

1255. when he came to faith

  1256. his wife divorced him

  1257. he lost his home

  1258. because they were

  1259. living in a home

  1260. that their family owned

  1261. but he stood firm

  1262. in his faith

  1263. and God honored him

  1264. in 2007

  1265. Jibril

  1266. Jibril

  1267. this guy right here

  1268. was reading a bible

  1269. a very conservative Muslim

1270. he was reading a bible

  1271. and coming to faith

  1272. and during that time

1273. he met an Indonesian missionary

  1274. who didn't share

  1275. the gospel with him

  1276. he said

  1277. I met this guy

1278. and every time we met

  1279. he just gave me

1280. a little bit of truth

  1281. and a little more

  1282. before long

  1283. the relationship cut off

  1284. and he never shared

  1285. the gospel with me

  1286. but praise God

  1287. this movement was happening

  1288. he heard the gospel

  1289. was baptized

1290. and we cast vision for him

1291. the gospel for every person

  1292. in a house church

  1293. in every village

  1294. which was our goal

1295. among the 8.5 million people

  1296. of our people group

1297. the gospel for every person

  1298. in a house church

  1299. in every village

  1300. he said

1301. I knew God was calling me

  1302. to do this

1303. I had to lead somebody

  1304. to faith that night

  1305. I had to

  1306. and so he led

  1307. this guy to faith

  1308. Sahil

1309. one of the village leaders

  1310. 10 days later

  1311. they led a jihadi

  1312. to faith

  1313. a jihad soldier

  1314. someone who had gone

  1315. to faith

  1316. against the Christian religion

1317. somebody kind of like Paul

1318. somebody kind of like Paul

  1319. he believed

  1320. and was baptized

  1321. within a half year

  1322. they had led

  1323. 200 or so

  1324. you know

  1325. Muslim leaders

  1326. community leaders

  1327. to faith

  1328. and

  1329. people who are willing

1330. to die for their faith

1331. Jibril tells of a time

  1332. when he and Sahil

1333. were out sharing the gospel

  1334. and an angry fanatic

  1335. had a knife

  1336. to Jibril's throat

  1337. and he said

1338. it wasn't just for a short time

1339. it was for a long time

  1340. now these people

1341. are bold as a lion

1342. some of the boldest people

  1343. I know

  1344. finally

  1345. Sahil said

  1346. you know Jibril

1347. you might want to back off

  1348. a little bit

  1349. I think he's angry

  1350. I think he's angry

  1351. but

  1352. Jibril said

  1353. I wasn't finished yet

1354. so I just went ahead

1355. and shared the gospel with him

  1356. and at the end

  1357. I told him

1358. you know what I've told you

  1359. is true

1360. and if you can kill me

  1361. go ahead

  1362. but see it's just

  1363. one of those instances

  1364. where God

  1365. protected them

1366. while they're doing the work

1367. we do know of one man

  1368. who was martyred

1369. you know for his faith

  1370. in a movement

1371. that came off of this one

1372. but many who have been

  1373. imprisoned

  1374. but

  1375. through it all

  1376. the Lord has

  1377. you know

  1378. has shown his grace

  1379. and has rescued them

  1380. I think early

  1381. in this movement

  1382. when it started happening

  1383. regularly

  1384. Satan put out attempts

  1385. on their lives

1386. I mentioned the jihadi soldier

  1387. one day he said

1388. I was driving my motorcycle

  1389. across a bridge

  1390. and before I knew

  1391. he said

  1392. I was standing on

  1393. on the edge

  1394. and my motorcycle

1395. was down in the ravine

  1396. I don't know how

  1397. I ended up here

  1398. but God protected it

  1399. by the way

  1400. his motorcycle

  1401. still worked too

  1402. you know

1403. so he just got on

  1404. his motorcycle

  1405. went about his business

  1406. there are thousands

  1407. of stories

  1408. of God's miraculous

  1409. deliverance

  1410. I recently

  1411. heard another story

  1412. of another movement

  1413. that's emerging

  1414. in another part

  1415. of our country

  1416. a new believer

  1417. was leading others

  1418. to faith

  1419. they were starting

  1420. house churches

  1421. he said

  1422. one night

  1423. I woke up

1424. in the middle of the night

1425. I had to go to the restroom

1426. and so he went outside

  1427. of his house

  1428. to the bathroom

  1429. and he heard

  1430. these two men

  1431. or three

  1432. talking about

  1433. how they were going

  1434. to tie him up

  1435. in a sack

  1436. and throw him

  1437. in the ocean

  1438. but you see

  1439. God protected him

  1440. woke him up

  1441. he and his family

1442. moved to a neighboring city

  1443. where they started

  1444. churches there

  1445. in that place

  1446. see God helps us

  1447. it would be insane

  1448. to leave home

  1449. go overseas

  1450. to some place

  1451. where you know

  1452. considered dangerous

  1453. with people

  1454. who are generally

  1455. considered to be

  1456. violently opposed

  1457. to the gospel

  1458. it would be insane

  1459. unless the Lord

  1460. went with us

1461. but in the great commission

  1462. Jesus said

  1463. remember this

  1464. I'll be with you

  1465. always

1466. to the end of the world

  1467. and he proves it

  1468. time after time

  1469. after time

  1470. after time

  1471. as we go to

  1472. what's considered

  1473. some of the world's

  1474. most dangerous places

  1475. he goes with us

  1476. we experience

  1477. his presence

  1478. we worship

  1479. you'll never

  1480. experience the presence

  1481. of the Lord Jesus

  1482. more closely

  1483. than you will

  1484. when you go out

  1485. of your comfort zone

  1486. to share the gospel

  1487. with somebody else

  1488. and the promise

  1489. we always make

  1490. to teams

  1491. is

  1492. what I promise

  1493. is you'll experience

  1494. the Lord's presence

  1495. and every time

  1496. every time

  1497. we've had a team work

  1498. they say

  1499. we experienced

  1500. the Lord's presence

  1501. let me tell you

  1502. what he did

  1503. the Lord helps us

1504. that's why it makes sense

  1505. God's help

  1506. makes it make sense

  1507. and finally Paul said

  1508. the gospel's hope

  1509. the gospel's hope

1510. makes it make perfect sense

  1511. so as he's before

  1512. the king

  1513. he proclaims the gospel

  1514. two times early

  1515. in this chapter

  1516. in verses 6 and 7

  1517. actually three times

1518. Paul refers to the hope

1519. the hope of the gospel

1520. it was a motivating factor

  1521. for him

  1522. and before the king

  1523. here he brings it

  1524. to remembrance

  1525. this little

  1526. this little

  1527. lighthouse

  1528. outside of the island

  1529. where we serve

  1530. represents

1531. the hope of the gospel

  1532. that's starting to take

  1533. take root

  1534. within our people group

  1535. as tens of thousands

  1536. have come to faith

  1537. and thousands

  1538. of multiplying

  1539. house churches

  1540. have been formed

  1541. within the last month

  1542. we've heard of a

  1543. 20th generation

  1544. house church

  1545. which means

  1546. this church

  1547. reached somebody else

  1548. who started a church

  1549. and that would reach

  1550. somebody else

  1551. who started a church

  1552. to 20 times

  1553. 20 times

  1554. so

  1555. when you compare

  1556. tens of thousands

1557. to eight and a half million

  1558. that's not a whole lot

  1559. but praise God

1560. it is a good start

1561. it is a good start

  1562. and from this movement

  1563. God is sending people

  1564. to other areas

  1565. and different places

  1566. even different countries

  1567. and they're having

  1568. breakthroughs of the gospel

  1569. and the gospel

  1570. is changing people's lives

  1571. see the little

  1572. the guy here

  1573. the guy here

  1574. used to be

  1575. an imam

  1576. a Muslim pastor

  1577. in fact he arranged

  1578. the funerals

  1579. for the entire area

1580. for Muslims who passed away

1581. but God changed his life

  1582. and saved him

  1583. now he's reached

  1584. more than 100 people

  1585. who started churches

  1586. in their home

  1587. now you don't live

  1588. where we live

  1589. so you can't see

1590. the faces of the people

  1591. we serve

1592. let's go to the next

1593. let's go to the next slide

  1594. here are a couple

  1595. of older guys

  1596. who God is using

  1597. to change their communities

1598. a fellow on the left

  1599. the first time

  1600. I ever met him

  1601. he said hi

1602. he told me his name

1603. he said I used to gamble

  1604. and steal

1605. but Christ changed my life

  1606. since that time

  1607. he's reached about 15 people

  1608. or so

  1609. who have started churches

  1610. in their homes

1611. he has the wisdom of God

  1612. he's kind of like

1613. he's one of these fellas

1614. that when you talk to him

1615. he always has the right answer

1616. even though he's never been to school

1617. even though he's never been to school

  1618. just a joy

1619. and there's one of the friends

1620. that if I remember correctly

  1621. that he himself

  1622. had led to faith

1623. somebody also in his 80s

  1624. there's a band

1625. of 80 something year old people now

  1626. whose lives

  1627. Christ has changed

  1628. who are changing

  1629. their world

  1630. they have a smile

  1631. on their face

  1632. I think of another

1633. 80 something year old guy

1634. his wife got saved later

  1635. she was really hard

1636. but now she got saved

  1637. and she goes around

  1638. singing all the time

1639. the Lord changed her life

  1640. so

  1641. young and old

  1642. those are some

  1643. pictures of some

  1644. of the older folks

1645. who have come to faith

1646. let's go to the next slide

  1647. pictures of a couple

  1648. of children

  1649. from our

  1650. larger people group

  1651. recently

  1652. some of our friends

1653. teach at the Baptist Seminary

1654. and they were telling me

  1655. one of our friends

  1656. called one

  1657. let me tell you

  1658. an exciting story

  1659. let me tell you

  1660. what I just heard

  1661. I was talking to

  1662. one of our students

1663. who's now at the Baptist Seminary

  1664. and said

  1665. we asked the student

1666. where did you go to church

  1667. and the student said

  1668. I've never been to a church

  1669. like this

  1670. but somebody shared

  1671. the gospel

  1672. with my dad

  1673. at a park somewhere

  1674. he came to faith

  1675. he came hold

  1676. and told us

  1677. and my mom

  1678. and my siblings

  1679. we came to faith

1680. and we started a church

  1681. at our house

  1682. and since that time

  1683. we've reached other people

  1684. they've started churches

  1685. in their homes

  1686. now in the Indonesian

  1687. schools

  1688. pardon me

  1689. in the school system

  1690. of the country

  1691. where we serve

  1692. they study religion

  1693. and it's almost

  1694. always Islam

  1695. but if by chance

  1696. there is a community

  1697. of Christians

  1698. usually traditional Christians

  1699. they've been there

1700. for a long long time

  1701. if by chance

  1702. that community is there

  1703. they'll offer Christianity

  1704. for those children

  1705. anyway

  1706. my friend said

  1707. well this student

1708. here's what the student said

1709. I'm here at the seminary

  1710. studying

1711. because I want to teach

  1712. Christianity

  1713. in our school

  1714. you see

  1715. there's so many kids

  1716. who've come to faith

  1717. in my community now

  1718. they've got to offer

  1719. Christianity here as well

  1720. praise God

  1721. praise God

  1722. just an example

  1723. of the transforming power

  1724. of the gospel

  1725. to change people's lives

  1726. whereas

  1727. a few years ago

  1728. they wouldn't have heard

  1729. now

  1730. tens of thousands

  1731. of people

  1732. are hearing the gospel

  1733. many are believing

  1734. and when they hear

  1735. they proclaim

  1736. the gospel

  1737. to others

  1738. see now the task

  1739. becomes doable

  1740. we didn't do

  1741. anything heroic

  1742. the Lord gave us

  1743. a little more faith

  1744. than we had

  1745. and we simply decided

  1746. that we're going to

  1747. obey what Christ

  1748. told us to do

  1749. and I've shared briefly

  1750. what he himself

  1751. is doing

  1752. based on a simple

  1753. proclamation

  1754. of the gospel

1755. and so it brings us

  1756. down to this question

  1757. notice the final slide

  1758. what is God

  1759. calling you

  1760. to sacrifice

  1761. to spread the gospel

  1762. locally

  1763. and around the world

  1764. it makes sense

  1765. it makes sense

1766. and Paul made his defense

  1767. and God's calling us

  1768. all to be involved

  1769. for some of us

  1770. it might simply mean

  1771. don't be ashamed

  1772. of the gospel

  1773. simply start sharing

  1774. it with others

  1775. God can use you

1776. to lead them to faith

  1777. we all should be

  1778. praying every day

  1779. for God's kingdom

  1780. for what he's doing

  1781. around the world

  1782. through the spread

  1783. of the gospel

1784. so if that's not part

  1785. of your daily schedule

  1786. schedule it in

  1787. I'm going to pray

  1788. I'm going to pray

  1789. for missions

  1790. I'm going to pray

  1791. for these unreached

  1792. people groups

  1793. and those who are

  1794. proclaiming the gospel

  1795. to them

  1796. some of you

1797. are going to be called

1798. to go on short term trips

  1799. and perhaps others

  1800. are being called

  1801. to leave home

  1802. and go overseas

  1803. like some of us

  1804. have done

  1805. you know

  1806. to proclaim the gospel

  1807. to others

  1808. so what is God

  1809. calling you

  1810. to sacrifice

  1811. to spread the gospel

  1812. locally and around

  1813. the world

  1814. let's pray

  1815. Lord as we've asked

1816. you to speak to us

  1817. clearly

1818. we pray that you have

1819. and trust that you have

  1820. what are you calling

  1821. us to sacrifice

  1822. what are you calling

  1823. us to do

  1824. all that we have

  1825. is yours

  1826. we ourselves

  1827. belong to you

  1828. and Lord Jesus

  1829. we're proud of you

  1830. we're not ashamed

  1831. of the gospel

  1832. of Christ

  1833. for it's the power

  1834. of salvation

  1835. to all who believe

  1836. to the Jew first

1837. and also to the Greek

  1838. in Jesus name

  1839. we pray

  1840. amen
