  1. Thank you very much, Peyton. Great job.

  2. I am thrilled this morning to be able to introduce to you our guest preacher, Dr. John Blanchard.

  3. A lot of you remember him. This is his third time to be with us.

  4. For those of you who do not, Dr. Blanchard is an internationally known preacher, teacher, and author.

  5. He and his wife Pam live just outside of London, England.

  6. A little town named Banstead.

  7. As much as I would like to think that he flew here just to preach in our church,

  8. I have to say that he did not.

  9. He comes to this country from time to time.

  10. And since I have discovered that he does, I have given him an open invitation

  11. to let me know whenever he's going to be here.

  12. Because I would love for him to preach.

  13. And I get a lot of positive feedback when I announce that you're going to be here.

  14. I've had several, I won't say really how smart-alecky they are to let me know.

  15. I'm really looking forward to this week's sermon.

  16. I first heard Dr. Blanchard many years ago when I was in seminary at Fort Worth, Texas.

  17. He came to our church, South Cliff Baptist Church, to lead a Bible conference.

  18. That's when I first learned about him and his ministry and became familiar with his books.

  19. He has written numerous books.

  20. His specialty, I guess you might say, is evangelism and defending the Christian faith, apologetics.

  21. Or, one way to think about it, he has been gifted by God to be able to answer a lot of questions

  22. that not just unbelievers, but real skeptics, even atheists, ask.

  23. Two that have stood out to me,

  24. Ultimate Questions, is a book that I think there's over 14 million in print

  25. in what, I read this 60 different languages.

  26. It has been used by God probably more than any booklet tract

  27. in these last 50 years than anything else.

  28. It's still being used today.

  29. He does not have them here today, but I would encourage you,

  30. if you know people that you would like to engage in an evangelistic conversation,

  31. talk to them about their relationship with the Lord.

  32. And you know they've got a lot of questions, and you know they'll read.

  33. Get a copy of this.

  34. If you know that they really will read, if they really are interested,

  35. get a copy of his book, Write with God.

  36. I've given several of these away, and many of these over the years.

  37. And God has truly blessed those efforts throughout the world.

  38. Throughout the world.

  39. Not just among English-speaking people.

  40. Today, he is going to be, he has three books available.

  41. These books are designed to really help us to be better prepared

  42. to explain to people what we believe and why we believe,

  43. especially people who are maybe antagonistic.

  44. And I've asked him to share a little bit about them

  45. before he preaches this morning,

  46. because they are helpful small books for us to become better equipped

  47. to live in this postmodern skeptical world

  48. and really not just say what we believe,

  49. to be able to defend it, articulate it well.

  50. I want to read one quote from John MacArthur

  51. as he was endorsing one of Dr. Blanchard's books.

  52. For those of you who know John MacArthur,

  53. you know that he doesn't say things he doesn't really believe.

  54. He doesn't mean.

  55. He says this,

  56. John Blanchard is a master

  57. when it comes to applying the timeless truths of the Bible

  58. to these postmodern times.

  59. And that's the real reason why I wanted him to come and preach,

  60. why he has this open invitation.

  61. God has gifted him

  62. to communicate the truth of his word

  63. in a very clear,

  64. understandable,

  65. applicable kind of way.

  66. So hear him prayerfully and carefully this morning

  67. with the intent

  68. of hearing what the Lord is saying to you

  69. so you can do it.

  70. Dr. Blanchard?

  71. Well, I will ask the Lord to forgive your pastor

  72. for those generous words

  73. and then to forgive me for enjoying them all.

  74. Excuse this,

  75. but those who were here for the first service

  76. will know that I struggled for about five minutes

  77. with an army of frogs in my throat,

  78. so I'm trying to drown them before we begin.

  79. But seriously, thank you for those very kind words.

  80. And I do remember

  81. preaching at Southcliffe

  82. and at Southwestern Seminary

  83. all those years ago.

  84. Your pastor then was Paul Burleson,

  85. and I've subsequently preached many times

  86. for his son,

  87. Wade Burleson,

  88. in various places in Oklahoma.

  89. So you and I, in a sense,

  90. go back a long way

  91. even though the link was

  92. kind of a little tenuous.

  93. I'm not sure about an invitation

  94. to come back to Pickens.

  95. I think it's an order.

  96. My very good friends,

  97. Trey and Cinder Lee,

  98. over at Kiawee,

  99. arranged some of my itinerary

  100. in this part of the world.

  101. And after I'd first preached here,

  102. your pastor said to Trey,

  103. whenever he comes here,

  104. he will preach for me again.

  105. That's not an invitation.

  106. That's an order.

  107. And I don't like to fall foul

  108. of American pastor,

  109. so I just do what I'm told.

  110. You know, he's the head of the house,

  111. but I just do whatever he asks me to do.

  112. So he instructed me

  113. to be here this morning,

  114. and here I am.

  115. Let me say just a word,

  116. although he's stolen them from me now

  117. about the three books that he mentioned.

  118. That's okay.

  119. He's got them here.

  120. And this will be very brief

  121. for one reason that you will discover.

  122. Thank you.

  123. Very, very shortly.

  124. I had three books published last year

  125. that were deliberately aimed

  126. to help Christians

  127. get the gospel across to other people.

  128. For example,

  129. your country and mine

  130. have never been so invaded

  131. by atheistic and agnostic thoughts.

  132. Christianity is being pushed

  133. into the background,

  134. and it's widely suggested

  135. that there is no God,

  136. and if there is,

  137. how in the world can we come to know him?

  138. So I've written this little book called

  139. Does Atheism Make Sense?

  140. Does it make cosmic sense,

  141. rational sense,

  142. human sense,

  143. moral sense?

  144. And then having showed that it doesn't,

  145. I go on to show that God does

  146. answer all those questions

  147. in a positive way.

  148. One of the areas that people

  149. will bring up to you

  150. and may bring up to you

  151. as you're seeking to witness to them

  152. would be,

  153. yes, but science now

  154. has shown that we don't need God.

  155. Science answers so many questions.

  156. Why do we need God?

  157. So this book is called Science Fiction.

  158. Has science disposed of God?

  159. And the other is,

  160. and they're all so relevant today,

  161. we now live,

  162. your country and mine

  163. and elsewhere in the world,

  164. in such a pluralistic society,

  165. religiously speaking.

  166. And so Christianity is one of many faiths

  167. that are pushing very hard

  168. to make their case known.

  169. Hinduism, Islam, of course,

  170. Buddhism, and many others.

  171. So the question we need to ask

  172. as Christians is,

  173. or that they may ask

  174. and we need to answer,

  175. is, well, why Jesus?

  176. What makes Jesus so different

  177. and exclusive from all the others?

  178. That's what I've tried to address

  179. in that book.

  180. Now, all of that said,

  181. there are these three titles.

  182. One of them was so in such demand

  183. we had to fly it over

  184. literally within the past few days

  185. from the UK to be here

  186. for this morning,

  187. and they're not going to be available

  188. anywhere else

  189. on this particular tour.

  190. The good news is

  191. that they're available

  192. as a package of three

  193. at a discounted price.

  194. The bad news is this.

  195. The first service was peopled

  196. by a plague of locusts

  197. with the result

  198. there are ten sets left.

  199. So I'm sure some of you thought

  200. there was always an advantage

  201. to be sitting

  202. in the back rows of the church.

  203. And this morning,

  204. you're right

  205. because you will get them

  206. before the others.

  207. And I am sorry about that,

  208. but let me just say this

  209. and quite seriously,

  210. if at the end of this morning service,

  211. when, of course,

  212. they will all have gone

  213. very quickly,

  214. if your pastor feels

  215. there is scope

  216. to get some more in

  217. so that more of you

  218. may get the books,

  219. I will arrange with him

  220. that that can be done,

  221. even if the discount

  222. isn't quite as you see it here today,

  223. but at least it will be

  224. a very reasonable cost

  225. and we can get them in for you.

  226. At this morning service,

  227. I want to ask you this question.

  228. I want you to imagine

  229. that it became an offense

  230. in this country

  231. to be a Christian.

  232. I've never been more interested

  233. in American politics

  234. as I am at the moment.

  235. Some of you have never been

  236. less interested, I guess.

  237. But it's simply fascinating

  238. to see what's happening

  239. in the United States

  240. and then see what's happening

  241. in the UK

  242. and to see actually

  243. a correlation between the two.

  244. They're actually

  245. in the same ballpark

  246. and it really is fascinating

  247. the way new laws

  248. are being brought in

  249. and in our country,

  250. tragically,

  251. I mean,

  252. a conservative,

  253. small c,

  254. a conservative government

  255. passing laws

  256. that are pushing

  257. biblical truth

  258. further and further

  259. into the margin.

  260. Suppose you reach the stage

  261. where here in the US

  262. it was a federal offense

  263. to be a Christian.

  264. Now just imagine that.

  265. Here's my question.

  266. Would there be enough evidence

  267. to convict you?

  268. Now I know that's turning things

  269. in an interesting direction,

  270. but just use your imagination again.

  271. It's a federal offense.

  272. You know,

  273. there's a tweet from,

  274. I can't think of his name,

  275. but anyway,

  276. there's a tweet from somebody

  277. who says it's now

  278. a federal offense

  279. to be a Christian

  280. and you're holed up

  281. before a local judge

  282. or some kind of higher court

  283. and you are charged

  284. with being a Christian

  285. and the evidence is called for.

  286. So your husband

  287. or your wife

  288. or your children

  289. or your parents

  290. or all of the above,

  291. the people with whom you work,

  292. the people with whom you socialize

  293. and they give evidence

  294. as to the quality of your life,

  295. the things you see and read,

  296. the things you say,

  297. the things you do,

  298. the way you react

  299. and you yourself

  300. are called to the witness stand

  301. and you give your own evidence

  302. on your behalf.

  303. And now the judge considers

  304. his verdict.

  305. And instead of having

  306. all the statutes

  307. of a couple hundred years

  308. behind him

  309. and law cases

  310. that he can refer

  311. and then link his judgment

  312. to one that was given

  313. by that judge here

  314. or this judge over here,

  315. what he has in front of him

  316. is a New Testament.

  317. And so all the evidence

  318. that has been given

  319. in your place

  320. and by you yourself,

  321. he now brings

  322. alongside the teaching

  323. of the New Testament.

  324. And he has to decide

  325. whether on the basis

  326. of what he's heard

  327. from them and from you,

  328. whether you are

  329. a New Testament Christian.

  330. And my question remains,

  331. would there be enough evidence

  332. to convict you?

  333. Now the obvious way

  334. to find out

  335. is to go to the New Testament.

  336. And so that's what

  337. we're going to do.

  338. In fact,

  339. the entire New Testament

  340. from beginning to end.

  341. So I'll just give you

  342. a warning about that.

  343. My plane doesn't leave

  344. Greenville until early

  345. on Tuesday afternoon,

  346. so we have plenty of time.

  347. We're going to go through

  348. the entire New Testament

  349. in this service.

  350. The front doors are locked.

  351. You can't get out.

  352. We're fully ready

  353. to settle down to this.

  354. Let me put it this way,

  355. and after a little while,

  356. you'll begin to see

  357. it's not going to be

  358. quite as long

  359. as you thought.

  360. But we'll be finished

  361. by three o'clock.

  362. I'll guarantee you that.

  363. Some of you look very pale.

  364. And the turkey in the oven

  365. is looking even paler.

  366. The New Testament

  367. begins with the Gospel.

  368. It begins with the Gospel.

  369. Now there's only one Gospel.

  370. We say there are four Gospels,

  371. and I know what we mean by that.

  372. One written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,

  373. but they're all telling the same story

  374. from a different perspective

  375. in a different manner

  376. with their own style of writing

  377. and so forth.

  378. But there is only one Gospel.

  379. It is said that the first

  380. of the four Gospel books

  381. to be written

  382. was the Gospel of Mark,

  383. and it begins with these words,

  384. the beginning of the Gospel

  385. about Jesus Christ,

  386. the Son of God.

  387. So here's my point.

  388. The New Testament begins

  389. with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,

  390. the Son of God.

  391. And the New Testament Christian

  392. begins with the Gospel

  393. of Jesus Christ,

  394. the Son of God.

  395. I want you to imagine

  396. that you had no religion at all,

  397. and you decided the time had come

  398. to pursue the religious idea.

  399. Was there some kind of religion

  400. that was the right one after all?

  401. So you go into a library,

  402. for example,

  403. where you would find,

  404. amongst other things,

  405. the Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics.

  406. It runs to 13 enormous volumes.

  407. And so there you are,

  408. you're going to take some hours

  409. and come back day after day

  410. and take many more hours,

  411. thumbing through these thousands of pages,

  412. seeking to find the answer

  413. to the question.

  414. It's been said,

  415. man is a religious animal.

  416. He must and will have some religion.

  417. And so you're looking for one.

  418. And you would find it very easy

  419. to dismiss some of the religions

  420. you read about.

  421. For example,

  422. you'd come across something called animism,

  423. which says that you can worship wood

  424. and fire and stone

  425. and trees and mountains.

  426. And you say,

  427. well, that sounds very interesting,

  428. but that can't possibly be right.

  429. Then you might come across

  430. the religion of Hinduism.

  431. And you say,

  432. look, I'm looking for,

  433. I'm looking for God,

  434. a God,

  435. the God,

  436. whom I can worship.

  437. But,

  438. trouble about Hinduism,

  439. it has 33 million gods.

  440. So how about I know

  441. which is the right one

  442. and do I have to worship all of them

  443. and in what way?

  444. Well, you'd pretty soon

  445. turn away from that,

  446. I'm sure.

  447. You might then turn to something

  448. called Buddhism.

  449. And you'd begin to study that

  450. and then discover,

  451. actually,

  452. it has no deities at all.

  453. So if I'm trying to find

  454. the one true God,

  455. I certainly won't find it

  456. in a religion

  457. that has no God.

  458. You might study,

  459. as well you might in these days,

  460. Islam.

  461. And when you did,

  462. you would discover,

  463. well,

  464. this God

  465. is remote.

  466. I cannot have a personal

  467. relationship with Him

  468. and I really don't like

  469. that idea at all.

  470. you'd come across

  471. something called

  472. polytheism,

  473. which simply says

  474. there are many gods

  475. and I need to spend time there.

  476. Just many gods,

  477. any of whom might be

  478. the right one,

  479. that gets you nowhere either.

  480. You'd come across

  481. something called

  482. pantheism,

  483. which says

  484. everything is God

  485. and God is everything.

  486. And you say,

  487. well,

  488. that is ridiculous.

  489. That means I could

  490. worship the floor

  491. I'm standing on

  492. or the roof over my head

  493. or a hot dog.

  494. Everything is God

  495. and God is everything.

  496. Well,

  497. that can't possibly

  498. be right.

  499. But then,

  500. having dismissed

  501. all of those,

  502. you might then

  503. turn to the Bible

  504. and you would come across

  505. this statement

  506. by the Apostle Paul

  507. without giving you time

  508. to turn it up.

  509. Let me read it to you.

  510. So you would be saying,

  511. now all of those others,

  512. they would all still

  513. leave me lost,

  514. absolutely lost,

  515. cut off from God,

  516. unable to be in touch

  517. with Him,

  518. unable to have a living

  519. relationship with Him,

  520. unable to get all the blessings

  521. that He could bring

  522. into my life.

  523. Now listen to this.

  524. Here's the Apostle Paul.

  525. Brothers,

  526. my heart's desire

  527. and prayer to God

  528. for the Israelites

  529. is that they may be saved.

  530. Wait a minute.

  531. we're not now talking

  532. of animists,

  533. Buddhists,

  534. Muslims,

  535. pantheists,

  536. polytheists.

  537. Paul is now referring

  538. to Jewish people.

  539. And when Paul wrote

  540. those words,

  541. the Jews were the only

  542. people who believed

  543. in there being

  544. one God,

  545. the one true God,

  546. the creator of heaven

  547. and earth,

  548. the sustainer of everything,

  549. of all reality,

  550. outside of himself.

  551. But here's the Apostle Paul

  552. saying of these people

  553. who had rejected

  554. the Greek and the Roman

  555. ideas of there being

  556. many gods

  557. and believed in there being

  558. one sovereign creator

  559. and sustainer of the universe

  560. and Paul says

  561. about them,

  562. my heart's desire

  563. for them,

  564. my heart is breaking

  565. for them

  566. for this reason,

  567. I want them to be saved.

  568. So they're lost too.

  569. So they believe

  570. in one God,

  571. the God,

  572. the only true God,

  573. and Paul says

  574. they're lost.

  575. He goes on,

  576. I can testify about them,

  577. they are jealous for God,

  578. I mean they really

  579. want to know God,

  580. but their zeal

  581. is not based

  582. on knowledge

  583. since they disregarded

  584. the righteousness

  585. that comes from God

  586. and went about

  587. to establish their own.

  588. It's such a vivid word.

  589. You can just imagine

  590. if you read

  591. the Old Testament,

  592. all the rituals

  593. and the rites

  594. and the ceremonies

  595. and the services

  596. and the sacrifices.

  597. All of this

  598. that they went through,

  599. you can just see them

  600. scuttling around,

  601. if I dare to say it,

  602. like ants

  603. trying to find

  604. the answer to something.

  605. So here they are

  606. trying to fulfill

  607. all of these rites

  608. and rituals,

  609. all these services

  610. and ceremonies.

  611. Paul says

  612. this is their problem.

  613. They are going about

  614. to establish

  615. their own righteousness,

  616. build up their own

  617. case before God,

  618. and they have neglected,

  619. which is the same

  620. as rejected,

  621. they have disregarded

  622. the righteousness

  623. that comes from God.

  624. They sought

  625. to establish their own.

  626. They did not submit

  627. to God's righteousness.

  628. And then he adds,

  629. Christ is the end

  630. of the law

  631. so that there may be

  632. righteousness

  633. for everyone

  634. who believes.

  635. And Paul knew

  636. exactly what he was

  637. talking about.

  638. He says this

  639. about the,

  640. when writing

  641. to the Philippians.

  642. If anyone else

  643. thinks he has reasons

  644. to put confidence

  645. in the flesh,

  646. I have more.

  647. Circumcised the eighth day

  648. of the people of Israel,

  649. of the tribe of Benjamin,

  650. a Hebrew of the Hebrews,

  651. in regard to the law,

  652. a Pharisee,

  653. as for zeal,

  654. persecuting the church,

  655. as for legalistic righteousness,

  656. all the bits and pieces

  657. of legalistic righteousness,

  658. as for legalistic righteousness,

  659. faultless.

  660. So when Paul says,

  661. look,

  662. my heart is breaking,

  663. not of course for people

  664. who are atheists

  665. and agnostics

  666. and worshipping Greek

  667. and Roman gods,

  668. but my heart is also

  669. breaking for people

  670. who are ethnically Jews.

  671. And they do believe

  672. in the one true God.

  673. So at least they're pointed

  674. in the right direction.

  675. But they're lost.

  676. They're not saved.

  677. And the reason

  678. they're not saved

  679. is this.

  680. Instead of accepting

  681. the righteousness

  682. that God has provided,

  683. they're going about

  684. to establish

  685. their own righteousness.

  686. They're believing

  687. that God grades on a curve

  688. and if they check enough boxes,

  689. as far as religion is concerned,

  690. then God will accept them

  691. and receive them

  692. into His family,

  693. giving them the forgiveness

  694. of sins

  695. and eternal life.

  696. Now that was his great concern

  697. about them.

  698. I wonder if he would say

  699. the same about you today.

  700. One of the great advantages

  701. of coming to a church

  702. like this,

  703. where I'm here only

  704. once a year

  705. or never more than that,

  706. is that I simply don't know

  707. who you are as individuals.

  708. I see your face now

  709. looking at me

  710. and I don't know

  711. where you stand,

  712. so I can ask you

  713. this question.

  714. Is in any way

  715. this true of you?

  716. If I were to ask you

  717. how can you be

  718. or are you

  719. absolutely sure

  720. that you are

  721. a New Testament Christian

  722. because you have begun

  723. not with rites

  724. and rituals

  725. and ceremonies

  726. and walking to the front

  727. and responding

  728. to altar calls

  729. and being baptized

  730. and joining a Baptist church.

  731. There'll be

  732. countless numbers

  733. of those

  734. who will never be in heaven.

  735. But are you sure

  736. that you are

  737. a New Testament Christian

  738. because you have begun

  739. in the only place

  740. you can begin

  741. which is

  742. with Jesus Christ

  743. as your own

  744. personal Savior.

  745. That is so hugely

  746. important.

  747. Let me put it this way

  748. to you

  749. and it may shock you.

  750. Nobody becomes a Christian

  751. by believing the Bible.

  752. Nobody.

  753. You say,

  754. well I believe

  755. this and this

  756. and I believe the Bible.

  757. Good.

  758. Well I've got news for you.

  759. So does the devil.

  760. And James says that

  761. in his epistle.

  762. You believe in one God?

  763. That's fine.

  764. So do all the devils

  765. in hell

  766. and they shudder

  767. in terror.

  768. Nobody becomes

  769. a Christian

  770. without believing

  771. the Bible

  772. but nobody

  773. becomes a Christian

  774. merely by believing

  775. that what the Bible

  776. says is true.

  777. Any profession

  778. to be a Christian

  779. without a personal

  780. commitment to Christ

  781. is a catastrophic

  782. mistake.

  783. You may know

  784. the gospel

  785. but do you know

  786. the Savior?

  787. So a New Testament

  788. Christian

  789. begins with

  790. the gospel.

  791. Let me ask that

  792. last question again

  793. and please think

  794. seriously about it

  795. as you sit there

  796. facing me this morning.

  797. You may know

  798. the gospel

  799. and if you worship

  800. in a church

  801. as sound as this one

  802. with a pastor

  803. as good as you have here

  804. you should certainly

  805. know the gospel

  806. but do you know

  807. the Savior?

  808. Can you sing

  809. the Lord is

  810. my shepherd?

  811. And if not

  812. listen on

  813. very carefully.

  814. Well secondly

  815. the gospel

  816. is followed by

  817. Acts

  818. and you'll be relieved

  819. to know

  820. that already

  821. we've got

  822. through four books

  823. of the Bible

  824. and it is immediately

  825. followed by Acts.

  826. and that's made clear

  827. if we read

  828. from Ephesians

  829. two verses

  830. that some of you

  831. will know

  832. very well.

  833. By grace

  834. are you saved

  835. through faith

  836. and that not

  837. of yourselves

  838. it's the gift

  839. of God

  840. not of works

  841. so no one

  842. can boast

  843. and then goes on

  844. to say this

  845. in verse 10

  846. for we are

  847. his workmanship

  848. created in Christ

  849. Jesus

  850. to do good works

  851. which he has prepared

  852. in advance

  853. for us

  854. to do.

  855. Or

  856. 2 Corinthians 5

  857. if anyone

  858. is in Christ

  859. he is a new

  860. creation.

  861. The old

  862. has gone

  863. the new

  864. has come.

  865. Now

  866. that doesn't mean

  867. that when you

  868. become a Christian

  869. you become perfect.

  870. Charles Haddon Spurgeon

  871. once said

  872. he'd only met

  873. one perfect man

  874. and he was

  875. a perfect nuisance

  876. and some of you

  877. ladies are saying

  878. yeah I know

  879. I married him.

  880. Well let's

  881. we'll pass over

  882. that for the time being

  883. the pastor will hold

  884. marriage counseling

  885. sessions if you need them

  886. but

  887. no

  888. when you become

  889. a person who becomes

  890. a Christian

  891. doesn't become

  892. perfect

  893. but hear me

  894. carefully

  895. he becomes

  896. different.

  897. The very word

  898. conversion

  899. could tell you that.

  900. I've lived long enough

  901. to know when in my

  902. my house

  903. in the tiny island

  904. on which I live

  905. just off the coast

  906. of France

  907. I can remember

  908. when we converted

  909. from gas

  910. to electricity.

  911. I mean

  912. it's a conversion

  913. from one

  914. that is a change.

  915. so the question

  916. I have to ask you

  917. this morning

  918. in examining the question

  919. are you a New Testament

  920. Christian

  921. is

  922. what is different?

  923. Think of the

  924. Corinthian verse again

  925. old things

  926. the old has gone

  927. the new has come.

  928. How many things

  929. have gone

  930. in your life?

  931. I don't mean

  932. and I'm being careful here

  933. I don't mean gone

  934. permanently

  935. and never again

  936. do they rear

  937. their sinful

  938. ugly filthy head

  939. but

  940. essentially

  941. they have gone.

  942. What things

  943. have gone

  944. in your life?

  945. And what things

  946. are new

  947. in your life?

  948. Things that simply

  949. as you look back

  950. were never there before.

  951. Your interest

  952. in the gospel.

  953. Your love

  954. of God's word.

  955. Your willingness

  956. to read it

  957. and study it.

  958. Your prayer life.

  959. Your concern

  960. for people

  961. you know

  962. who are not

  963. Christians.

  964. you're interested

  965. in mission

  966. enterprise

  967. throughout the world.

  968. How many of those

  969. things have come

  970. and you can say

  971. that's when

  972. the change happened.

  973. So

  974. the New Testament

  975. begins with the gospel

  976. it is immediately

  977. followed by Acts

  978. and if the Acts

  979. aren't there

  980. if the change

  981. is not there

  982. then how can you know

  983. that the gospel

  984. has taken root

  985. in your heart?

  986. As someone put it

  987. the problem is

  988. that many people

  989. come to church

  990. just as they are

  991. they sing

  992. just as I am

  993. and they go away

  994. just as they were.

  995. Now that's not

  996. supposed to be

  997. what happens.

  998. Now it is possible

  999. of course

  1000. to have good works

  1001. and I'm talking

  1002. of philanthropy

  1003. and social good works

  1004. now.

  1005. It's possible

  1006. to have good works

1007. and not to be a Christian

  1008. but it is impossible

  1009. to be a true

  1010. New Testament Christian

  1011. and not to have

1012. a measure of good works

  1013. that backs it up.

  1014. The Red Cross International

  1015. as it's now known

1016. was founded by a man

  1017. called Jean-Henri Dunant

  1018. whose driving force

  1019. was the teaching

  1020. of scripture

1021. and it does the most

  1022. staggering

  1023. almost unbelievable work

  1024. all around the world

1025. so there are good works

  1026. there

1027. but let me tell you

  1028. of another organization

  1029. that does amazing

  1030. good works

  1031. particularly in some

  1032. parts of the world

  1033. it's called

  1034. the Red Crescent

1035. and it has no Christian

  1036. backing at all

  1037. it is exactly

  1038. the opposite

  1039. and if you were

  1040. to tell

  1041. a radical Muslim

  1042. that the work

  1043. of the Red Crescent

  1044. shows that they're Christian

  1045. you may need

  1046. the Red Cross

  1047. or worse

  1048. so again

  1049. it's possible

  1050. to have good work

  1051. to do good things

1052. and not to be a Christian

  1053. it is impossible

  1054. to be a true

  1055. New Testament Christian

  1056. and not to do

  1057. good works

  1058. the change

  1059. certainly is there

  1060. and without it

  1061. all claims

  1062. are simply

  1063. not worth

  1064. the air they are

  1065. breathed into

  1066. and James

  1067. again

  1068. one of my favorite

1069. authors in the New Testament

  1070. takes us exactly there

  1071. in his own

  1072. inimitable

  1073. and illustrative way

  1074. listen to him here

  1075. in chapter 2

  1076. what good is it

  1077. my brothers

  1078. if a man

  1079. claims to have faith

  1080. but has no deeds

  1081. can such faith

  1082. save him

  1083. well there's the

  1084. rhetorical question

  1085. here's the person

  1086. who says

  1087. I'm a Christian

  1088. you examine

  1089. their lives

  1090. to see

  1091. what changes

  1092. there are

  1093. and you

  1094. privately think

  1095. well I'm not sure

  1096. I see the kind

  1097. of difference

  1098. I would expect

  1099. there to be

  1100. in a genuine

  1101. Christian there

  1102. but James

  1103. doesn't leave it there

  1104. he gives us

  1105. an illustration

  1106. which he is so

  1107. good at

  1108. suppose a brother

  1109. or sister

  1110. is without clothes

  1111. and daily food

  1112. if one of you

  1113. says to him

  1114. go I wish you

  1115. well keep warm

  1116. and well fed

  1117. but does nothing

  1118. about his physical

  1119. needs

  1120. what good is it

  1121. and of course

  1122. the answer

  1123. is no good

  1124. at all

  1125. in the same

  1126. way faith

  1127. by itself

  1128. if it is not

  1129. accompanied by

  1130. action

  1131. is dead

  1132. I don't think

  1133. I need to

  1134. illustrate James'

  1135. illustration

  1136. it is so crystal

  1137. clear

  1138. and so

  1139. I won't

  1140. elaborate

  1141. he has done

  1142. the job

  1143. perfectly well

  1144. God never

  1145. does a saving

  1146. work in the

  1147. heart

  1148. without doing

  1149. a changing

  1150. work in the

  1151. life

  1152. and thirdly

  1153. and won't

  1154. you be glad

  1155. that that's

  1156. the gospel

  1157. and acts

  1158. over

  1159. we're now

  1160. into the

  1161. epistles

  1162. a new

  1163. testament

  1164. Christian

  1165. becomes

  1166. an epistle

  1167. listen to

  1168. these words

  1169. from Paul

  1170. to the

  1171. Corinthian

  1172. church

  1173. are we

  1174. beginning

  1175. to commend

  1176. ourselves

  1177. again

  1178. or do

  1179. we need

  1180. like some

  1181. people

  1182. letters

  1183. of recommendation

  1184. to you

  1185. or from

  1186. you

  1187. you

  1188. yourselves

  1189. are our

  1190. letter

  1191. written

  1192. on our

  1193. hearts

  1194. known

  1195. and read

  1196. by everybody

  1197. you show

  1198. that you

  1199. are a

  1200. letter

  1201. from

  1202. Christ

  1203. the result

  1204. of our

  1205. ministry

  1206. written

  1207. not with

  1208. ink

  1209. but with

  1210. the spirit

  1211. of the

  1212. living

  1213. God

  1214. not on

  1215. tablets

  1216. of stone

  1217. but on

  1218. tablets

  1219. of human

  1220. hearts

  1221. let me go

  1222. back over

  1223. that and read

  1224. one sentence

  1225. again

  1226. you are

  1227. our

  1228. letter

  1229. written

  1230. on our

  1231. hearts

  1232. known

  1233. and read

  1234. by

  1235. everybody

  1236. here's the

  1237. point

  1238. there was

  1239. an evangelist

  1240. in England

  1241. many years

  1242. ago

  1243. called

  1244. Gypsy

  1245. Smith

  1246. and he

  1247. used to

  1248. say

  1249. there are

  1250. five

  1251. gospels

  1252. Matthew

  1253. Mark

  1254. Luke

  1255. John

  1256. and the

  1257. life

  1258. of the

  1259. Christian

  1260. and he

  1261. said

  1262. the trouble

  1263. is most

  1264. people

  1265. don't read

  1266. the first

  1267. four

  1268. and that's

  1269. true

  1270. most people

  1271. outside in

  1272. this wonderful

  1273. country of

  1274. yours

  1275. this wonderful

  1276. state of

  1277. yours

  1278. most people

  1279. don't read

  1280. the gospels

  1281. the four

  1282. gospels

  1283. Matthew

  1284. Mark

  1285. Luke

  1286. and John

  1287. but hear

  1288. me

  1289. carefully

  1290. if you

  1291. profess to

  1292. be a

  1293. Christian

  1294. and they

  1295. know that

  1296. you profess

  1297. to be a

  1298. Christian

  1299. they read

  1300. you

  1301. that was

  1302. Gypsy

  1303. Smith's

  1304. point

  1305. they read

  1306. you

  1307. they do

  1308. if you

  1309. profess to

  1310. be a

  1311. Christian

  1312. if they

  1313. know you

  1314. at first

  1315. Baptist

  1316. Pickens

  1317. every Sunday

  1318. and on

  1319. Monday

  1320. you're at

  1321. work with

  1322. them or at

  1323. home with

  1324. them or

  1325. socializing

  1326. with them

  1327. they are

  1328. reading you

  1329. and you

  1330. may say

  1331. something

  1332. do something

  1333. express an

  1334. opinion about

  1335. something

  1336. and privately

  1337. at least

  1338. privately

  1339. and maybe

  1340. more openly

  1341. than that

  1342. they say

  1343. well

  1344. if that's

  1345. what

  1346. Christianity

  1347. does for

  1348. you

  1349. I just

  1350. don't

  1351. need it

  1352. they are

  1353. reading

  1354. you

  1355. outside of

  1356. the Bible

  1357. you are

  1358. the only

  1359. visible

  1360. means

  1361. that God

  1362. has

  1363. of

  1364. demonstrating

  1365. the power

  1366. and the

  1367. relevance

  1368. of the

  1369. gospel

  1370. outside of

  1371. the Bible

  1372. you are

  1373. the only

  1374. if you're a

  1375. professing

  1376. Christian

  1377. you are

  1378. the only

  1379. visible

  1380. means

  1381. that God

  1382. has

  1383. of

  1384. expressing

  1385. the power

  1386. and the

  1387. relevance

  1388. of the

  1389. gospel

  1390. and you

  1391. say

  1392. no that

  1393. can't

  1394. be right

  1395. the heavens

  1396. declare the

  1397. glory of

  1398. God

  1399. the skies

  1400. proclaim the

  1401. work of

  1402. his hands

  1403. well of

  1404. course I've

  1405. heard of

  1406. that verse

  1407. I know

  1408. that verse

  1409. perfectly

  1410. well

  1411. but answer

  1412. me this

  1413. question

  1414. how much

  1415. of the

  1416. gospel do

  1417. you see

  1418. in the

  1419. sun

  1420. the moon

  1421. the stars

  1422. the clouds

  1423. the rivers

  1424. the trees

  1425. the flowers

  1426. how much

  1427. of the

  1428. I'm not

  1429. asking how

  1430. much of

  1431. the power

  1432. of God

  1433. or the

  1434. love of

  1435. God

  1436. or the

  1437. imagination

  1438. of God

  1439. or the

  1440. beauty

  1441. of God

  1442. my question

  1443. is specific

  1444. how much

  1445. of the

  1446. gospel

  1447. do you

  1448. see in

  1449. them

  1450. and the

  1451. answer

  1452. is

  1453. absolutely

  1454. nothing

  1455. the only

  1456. places

  1457. the gospel

  1458. is seen

  1459. is in

  1460. the word

  1461. of God

  1462. the living

  1463. and enduring

  1464. word

  1465. of God

  1466. and I'm

  1467. glad to be

  1468. preaching in a

  1469. church

  1470. the position

  1471. of whose

  1472. pastor

  1473. is this

  1474. what the

  1475. bible says

  1476. God

  1477. says

  1478. so the

  1479. only places

  1480. are the

  1481. written word

  1482. of God

  1483. and the

  1484. lives of

  1485. professing

  1486. Christians

  1487. doesn't that

  1488. bring to

  1489. your heart

  1490. as it

  1491. does to

  1492. mine

  1493. a tremendous

  1494. sense of

  1495. responsibility

  1496. I remember

  1497. the story

  1498. of two

  1499. college

  1500. students

  1501. who met

  1502. I guess

  1503. in seminary

  1504. and they

  1505. were discussing

  1506. various

  1507. translations

  1508. of the

  1509. bible

  1510. and one

  1511. said to

  1512. the other

  1513. what is

  1514. your

  1515. favorite

  1516. translation

  1517. he said

  1518. my

  1519. mother's

  1520. and the

  1521. other guy

  1522. was thrown

  1523. back a bit

  1524. and said

  1525. your mother's

  1526. I didn't

  1527. know she'd

  1528. written a

  1529. translation

  1530. of the

  1531. bible

  1532. does she

  1533. know

  1534. Hebrew

  1535. no

  1536. Greek

  1537. no

  1538. then what

  1539. is her

  1540. translation

  1541. his friend

  1542. said it's

  1543. a translation

  1544. into

  1545. action

  1546. now what

  1547. kind of

  1548. translation

  1549. are you

  1550. we have

  1551. a lot

  1552. of

  1553. translations

  1554. in the

  1555. world

  1556. today

  1557. and a

  1558. number

  1559. of

  1560. paraphrases

  1561. too

  1562. I hope

  1563. that you

  1564. don't

  1565. use a

  1566. paraphrase

  1567. as your

  1568. main

  1569. study

  1570. of the

  1571. bible

  1572. paraphrases

  1573. can be

  1574. of some

  1575. use

  1576. usually

  1577. by one

  1578. person

  1579. which

  1580. immediately

  1581. makes

  1582. them

  1583. slightly

  1584. more

  1585. dangerous

  1586. at least

  1587. slightly

  1588. more

  1589. dangerous

  1590. but

  1591. are you

  1592. a

  1593. paraphrase

  1594. in other

  1595. words

  1596. sure

  1597. you

  1598. touch

  1599. on the

  1600. general

  1601. meaning

  1602. of the

  1603. bible

  1604. here

  1605. and there

  1606. in your

  1607. life

  1608. or are

  1609. you

  1610. a good

  1611. translation

  1612. of what

  1613. the word

  1614. of god

  1615. says

  1616. jesus

  1617. said

  1618. i find

  1619. a most

  1620. searching

  1621. thing

  1622. he who

  1623. is with

  1624. me

  1625. he who is

  1626. not with

  1627. me

  1628. is against

  1629. me

  1630. well we

  1631. know that

  1632. and perhaps

  1633. when we're

  1634. thinking in

  1635. terms of

  1636. evangelism

  1637. we say

  1638. to someone

  1639. who may

  1640. say well

  1641. i'm not

  1642. i'm not a

  1643. committed

  1644. christian

  1645. but i'm

  1646. not against

  1647. it you

  1648. understand i'm

  1649. sort of sitting

  1650. on the fence

  1651. i'm in

  1652. between

  1653. and then we

  1654. pile in

  1655. with no

  1656. but jesus

  1657. said he

  1658. who is

  1659. not with

  1660. me

  1661. is against

  1662. me

  1663. there's

  1664. no

  1665. fence

  1666. on which

  1667. you

  1668. can

  1669. sit

  1670. if

  1671. you're

  1672. not

  1673. with

  1674. him

  1675. you're

  1676. against

  1677. him

  1678. so we're

  1679. happy

  1680. enough to

  1681. go along

  1682. with that

  1683. but why

  1684. don't we

  1685. complete the

  1686. sentence

  1687. which goes

  1688. like this

  1689. and he

  1690. who gathers

  1691. not with

  1692. me

  1693. scatters

  1694. so my

  1695. question to

  1696. you this

  1697. morning is

  1698. this

  1699. as people

  1700. you mix

  1701. with outside

  1702. of the

  1703. church

  1704. listen to

  1705. what you

  1706. say see

  1707. how you

  1708. react

  1709. watch how

  1710. you behave

  1711. are they

  1712. more likely

  1713. to be

  1714. gathered

  1715. towards

  1716. the gospel

  1717. or driven

  1718. from it

  1719. are they

  1720. more likely

  1721. perhaps

  1722. privately

  1723. to begin

  1724. with to

  1725. say

  1726. you know

  1727. they've got

  1728. something I

  1729. don't have

  1730. and it's not

  1731. just that they

  1732. go to church

  1733. because I know

  1734. other people

  1735. who go to

  1736. church and

  1737. their lives

  1738. aren't like

  1739. that

  1740. they've got

  1741. something I

  1742. haven't got

  1743. it's a great

  1744. moment when

  1745. that happens

  1746. because it

  1747. gives you a

  1748. chance to

  1749. say what

  1750. it is or

  1751. more accurately

  1752. who it

  1753. is you

  1754. have that

  1755. they don't

  1756. have but

  1757. he who

  1758. isn't gathering

  1759. with me I

  1760. mean not

  1761. dramatically

  1762. and consciously

  1763. and immediately

  1764. but he whose

  1765. life is not

  1766. steadily pointing

  1767. people in the

  1768. right direction

  1769. is scattering

  1770. them abroad

  1771. isn't that a

  1772. terrible thing

  1773. that as a

  1774. professing

  1775. Christian the

  1776. way you

  1777. live is

  1778. driving people

  1779. further away

  1780. from the

  1781. Savior you

  1782. love

  1783. and then

  1784. finally

  1785. we come

  1786. to the

  1787. book of

  1788. Revelation

  1789. so we

  1790. can catch

  1791. that plane

  1792. on Tuesday

  1793. after all

  1794. because we're

  1795. nearly through

  1796. the entire

  1797. New Testament

  1798. and the

  1799. opening words

  1800. in the book

  1801. of Revelation

  1802. are the

  1803. revelation

  1804. of Jesus

  1805. Christ

  1806. which God

  1807. gave him

  1808. to show

  1809. his servants

  1810. what must

  1811. soon

  1812. take

  1813. place

  1814. this

  1815. life is

  1816. not all

  1817. there is

  1818. there is

  1819. another

  1820. and there

  1821. is a day

  1822. which will

  1823. soon take

  1824. place

  1825. a day of

  1826. reckoning

  1827. a day

  1828. of

  1829. judgment

  1830. and in

  1831. my view

  1832. there are

  1833. two

  1834. major

  1835. errors

  1836. that are

  1837. being committed

  1838. and being

  1839. lived by

  1840. people

  1841. who are

  1842. not

  1843. committed

  1844. Christians

  1845. they both

  1846. have long

  1847. names but

  1848. they're easy

  1849. to explain

  1850. the first

  1851. is universalism

  1852. there are

  1853. millions of

  1854. people in

  1855. these United

  1856. States who

  1857. feel

  1858. well of

  1859. course I

  1860. realize I'm

  1861. not a

  1862. committed

  1863. Christian

  1864. I don't

  1865. go to

  1866. church

  1867. don't read

  1868. my Bible

  1869. but the

  1870. great thing

  1871. is that

  1872. God is

  1873. love

  1874. and

  1875. therefore at

  1876. the end of

  1877. the day

  1878. whatever failure

  1879. I've been

  1880. whatever failures

  1881. I've shown

  1882. God's love

  1883. will wrap

  1884. his arms

  1885. around me

  1886. and draw

  1887. me to

  1888. himself

  1889. with all

  1890. the rest

  1891. of humanity

  1892. forever

  1893. that is

  1894. called

  1895. universalism

  1896. and you

  1897. understand why

  1898. it has that

  1899. word

  1900. the other

  1901. is annihilationism

  1902. and annihilationism

  1903. says there

  1904. is no

  1905. God

  1906. and when

  1907. we die

  1908. we die

  1909. and that's

  1910. the end

  1911. of it

  1912. that's the

  1913. end of the

  1914. whole

  1915. story

  1916. but it's

  1917. not the

  1918. end of the

  1919. story

  1920. my question

  1921. is do

  1922. you know

  1923. where you

  1924. are going

  1925. there's a

  1926. lovely story

  1927. told of

  1928. Albert Einstein

  1929. the great

  1930. German

  1931. scientist

  1932. traveling in

  1933. a train

  1934. one day

  1935. a number

  1936. of years

  1937. ago of

  1938. course

  1939. in Germany

  1940. and the

  1941. ticket

  1942. inspector

  1943. came along

  1944. and found

  1945. Einstein

  1946. doing this

  1947. and goodness

  1948. me

  1949. and he

  1950. said

  1951. can I

  1952. help you

  1953. he said

  1954. well I've

  1955. lost my

  1956. ticket

  1957. and in the

  1958. course of

  1959. the inspector

  1960. being there

  1961. and looking

  1962. at it

  1963. suddenly realized

  1964. who he was

  1965. and said

  1966. oh professor

  1967. don't worry

  1968. about that

  1969. I know

  1970. you are

  1971. that's fine

  1972. so the

  1973. train went

  1974. on

  1975. stopped at

  1976. another

  1977. station

  1978. again the

  1979. inspector

  1980. comes around

  1981. looking for

  1982. tickets for

  1983. those who

  1984. just joined

  1985. the train

  1986. this time

  1987. found Einstein

  1988. on his

  1989. hands and

  1990. knees

  1991. looking under

  1992. the seat

  1993. and he

  1994. said can I

  1995. help you

  1996. sir

  1997. he said

  1998. I'm

  1999. looking for

  2000. my

  2001. ticket

  2002. and the

  2003. inspector

  2004. said sir

  2005. I told

  2006. you

  2007. I don't

  2008. need your

  2009. ticket

  2010. I know

  2011. who you

  2012. are

  2013. and Einstein

  2014. said I

  2015. know who

  2016. I am

  2017. I don't

  2018. know where

  2019. I'm

  2020. going

  2021. now I'm

  2022. sure you

  2023. know who

  2024. you are

  2025. but do

  2026. you know

  2027. where you're

  2028. going

  2029. there's

  2030. going to

  2031. be a

  2032. great day

  2033. of judgment

  2034. of separation

  2035. and the

  2036. bible does

  2037. not teach

  2038. universalism

  2039. we'll all

  2040. be saved

  2041. nor does

  2042. it teach

  2043. annihilationism

  2044. there is

  2045. no god

  2046. there is

  2047. no heaven

  2048. there is

  2049. no hell

  2050. we'll just

  2051. be zapped

  2052. and that's

  2053. the end

  2054. of it

  2055. it does

  2056. teach that

  2057. we are

  2058. answerable

  2059. to the

  2060. lord

  2061. for the

  2062. lives

  2063. we live

  2064. no

  2065. christian

  2066. will be

  2067. lost

  2068. there's

  2069. no

  2070. condemnation

  2071. to those

  2072. who are

  2073. in christ

  2074. jesus

  2075. but the

  2076. bible does

  2077. speak of

  2078. rewards

  2079. and blessings

  2080. in heaven

  2081. that are

  2082. calibrated

  2083. in ways

  2084. beyond

  2085. our

  2086. reckoning

  2087. that are

  2088. related to

  2089. the kind

  2090. of lives

  2091. we live

  2092. as christians

  2093. true christians

  2094. new testament

  2095. christians

  2096. know that

  2097. life is

  2098. not trivial

  2099. nothing

  2100. in life

  2101. is trivial

  2102. because

  2103. for everything

  2104. in life

  2105. we are

  2106. accountable

  2107. so

  2108. I end

  2109. as I began

  2110. by asking

  2111. you the

  2112. question

  2113. are you

  2114. a new

  2115. testament

  2116. christian

  2117. have you

  2118. begun

  2119. with the

  2120. gospel

  2121. are there

  2122. acts in

  2123. your life

  2124. that show

  2125. that it

  2126. has taken

  2127. root

  2128. do you

  2129. recognize

  2130. realize

  2131. accept

  2132. that you

  2133. are an

  2134. epistle

  2135. and that

  2136. people are

  2137. reading you

  2138. that because

  2139. they don't

  2140. open this

  2141. book and

  2142. read it

  2143. they've got

  2144. your life

  2145. to read

  2146. is your

  2147. life likely

  2148. to draw

  2149. them towards

  2150. christ

  2151. or drive

  2152. them from

  2153. him

  2154. and are

  2155. you living

  2156. each day

  2157. conscious

  2158. that one

  2159. day there

  2160. will be an

  2161. account

  2162. and you

  2163. look and

  2164. long for

  2165. the day

  2166. when you

  2167. will hear

  2168. those

  2169. blessed

  2170. words

  2171. enter

  2172. into the

  2173. joy

  2174. of your

  2175. lord

  2176. well done

  2177. good

  2178. and faithful

  2179. servant

  2180. my responsibility

  2181. to be preaching

  2182. those truths

  2183. in these days

  2184. and as we

  2185. said earlier

  2186. in the realm

  2187. of apologetic

  2188. seeking to

  2189. equip

  2190. christians to

  2191. answer the

  2192. questions that

  2193. others will be

  2194. asking them

  2195. hence the

  2196. three books

  2197. that were

  2198. mentioned

  2199. earlier

  2200. and hence

  2201. I'm afraid

  2202. the bad

  2203. news

  2204. that are

  2205. only ten

  2206. sets

  2207. left

  2208. but you

  2209. will be

  2210. able to

  2211. talk to

  2212. your pastor

  2213. afterwards

  2214. if you

  2215. want them

  2216. beyond

  2217. this

  2218. morning's

  2219. service

  2220. let's

  2221. bow our

  2222. heads

  2223. in

  2224. prayer

  2225. together

  2226. our

  2227. heavenly

  2228. father

  2229. what we

  2230. know

  2231. not

  2232. teach

  2233. us

  2234. and what

  2235. we have

  2236. not

  2237. give

  2238. us

  2239. and what

  2240. we are

  2241. not

  2242. make

  2243. us

  2244. and we

  2245. pray in

  2246. the name

  2247. of your

  2248. son

  2249. our

  2250. savior

  2251. amen

  2252. mom

  2253. tenía

  2254. em

  2255. ale

  2256. man
