  1. a drugstore, go in Walmart, any kind of pharmacy, and buy an over-the-counter drug like Aleve.

  2. It takes a lot to get into it. They're packaged securely today. You know, this box, you got

  3. to break it open. You got to get the little box out or the little bottle out. You think

  4. you're going to just open it? I can't even open this. It's got another seal here. Everything

  5. today, every kind of medication that you can just walk in and buy over-the-counter, some

  6. bodies, every company basically has gone to great lengths to make it secure. How many

  7. of you know why it's like that today? Raise your hand. Only old people raised their hands.

  8. Did you notice that? No, not really. Not really. Back in 1982, some crazy psycho in Chicago

  9. put cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules in some bottles in a drugstore. One lady took one of those cyanide-laced

  10. pills, thinking it was Tylenol, and it killed her. Before the whole thing was over, seven people,

  11. seven people lost their lives, thinking that they were taking Tylenol, a pain reducer, fever reducer.

  12. But it was laced with a poison that killed them. You know, there is an important lesson about faith in that tragic story.

  13. And that is, it's not enough to just sincerely believe something.

  14. Those people were as sincere as they could be in going in there and thinking that that bottle labeled Tylenol,

  15. that it would help them.

  16. But as it turned out, they were sincerely wrong.

  17. Because what was in it killed them.

  18. Faith is only as good as its object.

  19. Faith in faith is meaningless.

  20. Just being sincere about believing something, that can even be fatal.

  21. Faith is only as good as the object it's placed in.

  22. That Tylenol tragedy helps us to understand it's important to know what you believe in.

  23. Who you believe in.

  24. It's important for every one of us from time to time to just examine,

  25. investigate what it is that we believe.

  26. You know, the Bible actually commands us to do that.

  27. The Christian faith is probably the only faith known to humanity.

  28. It teaches us, don't believe blindly.

  29. Don't not think.

  30. The Christian faith says, look carefully at who you believe in, what you believe.

  31. Test it.

  32. I'll give you an example.

  33. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to Christians now,

  34. Paul's letter to the Corinthian church, second letter.

  35. In chapter 13, verse 5, he's coming to the end and he tells them,

  36. examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.

  37. Test yourselves.

  38. Or do you not realize that this about yourselves, that Christ Jesus is in you?

  39. Unless indeed you fail to meet the test.

  40. Now think about what he's saying here.

  41. Paul is writing to church members like us.

  42. Not writing to people out on the street,

  43. people who wouldn't even profess faith or might have some casual faith.

  44. Paul is writing to people who profess faith.

  45. They're meeting as a church in the city of Corinth.

  46. He says, examine yourselves to see whether you are truly in the faith.

  47. Test yourselves.

  48. Well, Jesus makes an even more startling,

  49. take you back kind of statement about genuine faith in Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  50. beginning in verse 21.

  51. I want you to turn there with me.

  52. That's where we're going to spend most of our time this morning.

  53. Matthew chapter 7, beginning in verse 21.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  54. Last week we had John Blanchard here.

  55. And you probably were not aware of this,

  56. but he actually preached two different messages.

  57. He preached one in the first service from the book of Philemon.

  58. And he did a topical message and basically walked through several passages

  59. in this, the second service.

  60. But they were both basically the same,

  61. or rather they had the same theme, made the same point.

  62. We need to make sure that we understand what it means to be a true Christian.

  63. In both messages, he gave a description

  64. about what Christians believe and how Christians behave.

  65. Well, I want to take what he said last week,

  66. that thought.

  67. Know what you believe.

  68. Examine yourself.

  69. I want to turn that into a short series of studies

  70. on the subject assurance of salvation.

  71. What I'd like for us to do is look at several passages of Scripture

  72. over the next few weeks,

  73. and they'll most all come from the book of 1 John.

  74. A little book toward the end of your New Testament.

  75. 1 John.

  76. And as we do this, I want us to answer the question,

  77. how can I be sure that I am a Christian?

  78. I want to begin, though, not with 1 John,

  79. but with what Jesus says in Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  80. one of the most sobering and disturbing passages

  81. in the entire Bible.

  82. I want you to think, as we read this,

  83. Jesus is speaking to professing disciples.

  84. This is the Sermon on the Mount,

  85. where Jesus is seeking or is preaching to,

  86. teaching these who are following Him.

  87. And He makes it very clear in what we're going to read.

  88. There are some people who think they're right with God,

  89. but they are not.

  90. There are some people who think on Judgment Day,

  91. they're going to be welcomed into heaven,

  92. but they will not be.

  93. And that should get our attention.

  94. Let's read it.

  95. Matthew 7, verse 21.

    Matthew 7:21

  96. Jesus says,

  97. Not everyone who says to me,

  98. Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  99. but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

  100. Think about what He's saying.

  101. Not everyone who says to me,

  102. Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven.

  103. In other words,

  104. only those who do the will of my Father.

  105. Verse 22.

  106. On that day,

  107. this is Judgment Day,

  108. many will say to me,

  109. Lord, Lord,

  110. did we not prophesy in Your name

  111. and cast out demons in Your name

  112. and do many miraculous works in Your name?

  113. Then I will declare to them,

  114. I never knew you.

  115. Depart from me,

  116. you workers of lawlessness,

  117. or you evildoers even.

  118. There is no greater need

  119. than that anyone has

  120. than to know that we have eternal life.

  121. There is no greater need

  122. that you or I,

  123. anyone we know,

  124. there is no greater need

  125. that a person can have

  126. than to know for sure

  127. that they have eternal life.

  128. and to know as much as we can

  129. that our family members

  130. are truly Christians

  131. and right with God.

  132. We want to know that

  133. if we're Christians

  134. because if they're not,

  135. we want to be able to pray for them,

  136. talk to them,

  137. encourage them,

  138. actually share the gospel with them.

  139. As we begin this study on assurance,

  140. I want us to start out

  141. by noticing three kinds of assurance

  142. found in the Bible.

  143. First, right here in Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  144. there is undeserved assurance,

  145. or we can call it this,

  146. false assurance.

  147. Jesus is pointing out here,

  148. some people have assurance,

  149. they call Him Lord,

  150. but they shouldn't have that assurance.

  151. They have false assurance,

  152. undeserved assurance.

  153. Now what kind of people

  154. are Jesus talking about here?

  155. People who profess faith in Christ,

  156. but their faith did not result in obedience.

  157. Look at verse 21 again.

  158. Not everyone who says to me,

  159. Lord, Lord,

  160. not everyone who proclaims, professes,

  161. I'm their Lord.

  162. Not everyone who says to me,

  163. Lord, Lord,

  164. will enter the kingdom of heaven.

  165. But the one who does the will of my Father

  166. who is in heaven,

  167. that's the one who will.

  168. He's talking about a false,

  169. or a faulty,

  170. profession of faith here.

  171. Here's what Jesus is wanting us to know.

  172. People who truly know Him,

  173. people who truly have a relationship with Him,

  174. people who really have true,

  175. saving faith,

  176. trust,

  177. confidence in Him,

  178. will also desire to please Him

  179. and be like Him

  180. in that they want to know and do the will of God.

  181. See, that was Jesus' food.

  182. That's what fueled Him.

  183. That's what kept Him going in this world.

  184. He wanted to know the will of His Father.

  185. He wanted to do the will of His Father.

  186. He wanted to bring glory and honor to His Father

  187. and all that He did in this world.

  188. And if we are His followers,

  189. we'll want to know the same.

  190. You know, Jesus taught us to even pray that way.

  191. In Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  192. in verse 10,

  193. we see that a part of the model prayer

  194. Jesus taught us,

  195. His people to pray,

  196. includes this statement.

  197. As we pray, we pray to God,

  198. Your kingdom come.

  199. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  200. Jesus teaches us to pray that way

  201. because that's what we want.

  202. That's what we desire.

  203. As God's people,

  204. we want to please God.

  205. We want His will to be done.

  206. In other words,

  207. Jesus is telling us here

  208. that real Christians

  209. don't just talk about what they believe.

  210. they live out their faith.

  211. And a part of living out their faith

  212. is seeking to know and do God's will.

  213. Now let's be real clear about this.

  214. Some people may get the idea,

  215. well, Jesus is teaching about

  216. some kind of working your way to heaven

  217. by doing God's will.

  218. Well, no, that's not what He's saying at all.

  219. Jesus in no way is

  220. de-emphasizing the fact

  221. that salvation is by the grace of God,

  222. it's unearned, it's undeserved,

  223. it's by the grace of God

  224. through faith in Jesus,

  225. through faith in who He is

  226. and what He's done for us.

  227. But what Jesus wants us to understand,

  228. what Paul emphasizes so much

  229. when he talks about faith,

  230. is that real faith,

  231. if we truly do trust in Jesus,

  232. His Spirit will come to live within us

  233. and make a difference in us,

  234. make a change in us,

  235. and the Spirit of God

  236. who lives in every Christian

  237. will cause us to want to put our faith

  238. into practice, into action,

  239. to do God's will.

  240. Now when you think about God's will,

  241. some people think in terms of

  242. some kind of special thing God has for me.

  243. Usually, the majority of times,

  244. overwhelming majority of times,

  245. when God's will is mentioned in Scripture,

  246. it's talking about God's moral will,

  247. how He wants us to live.

  248. God's will as a man

  249. is to be a godly husband to your wife,

  250. godly father to your children.

  251. God's will is that you

  252. not compromise

  253. His Word, His truth,

  254. biblical morality,

  255. as you do your work,

  256. as you do your job,

  257. even if they expect you to,

  258. people that hired you.

  259. God's will is very practical.

  260. It's living the way

  261. that He's called us to live

  262. because as Christians

  263. indwelled by the Holy Spirit,

  264. that's our desire.

  265. That's what we want to do.

  266. Now, genuine faith

  267. is a visible faith.

  268. It will be seen.

  269. And any faith that is not seen,

  270. in other words,

  271. if people can see you

  272. and they don't see any signs

  273. that you're a Christian,

  274. you're not.

  275. James says it this way.

  276. Look at James 2.17.

  277. Really, the whole book of James

  278. is about how faith works.

  279. Faith is visible.

  280. Faith produces fruit.

  281. But look at this.

  282. Faith by itself,

  283. if it is not accompanied by action,

  284. is dead.

  285. It is non-existent.

  286. So, Jesus is warning us

  287. about a faulty profession of faith.

  288. But He's also here warning us

  289. about a faulty expression of faith.

  290. Look at verse 22.

  291. He's warning us about substituting sensationalism

  292. for substance.

  293. Look at that verse again.

  294. On that day, judgment day,

  295. many will say to me,

  296. Lord, Lord,

  297. did we not do all kinds of miraculous things?

  298. Prophesy in Your name.

  299. Preach in Your name.

  300. Cast out demons in Your name.

  301. And do many mighty works in Your name.

  302. Jesus is talking about there are people.

  303. At that day and time,

  304. they claimed to be His followers,

  305. and they preached.

  306. They cast out demons.

  307. They actually performed miracles.

  308. But Jesus is saying

  309. they were not really His.

  310. They had no relationship with Him.

  311. They're going to be condemned

  312. on judgment day.

  313. This goes to show us

  314. miraculous signs

  315. do not necessarily mean

  316. that God's involved.

  317. You can look at it

  318. throughout Scripture.

  319. For example,

  320. in Moses' day,

  321. in the book of Exodus,

  322. Pharaoh had his wizards

  323. and magic guys

  324. who could perform

  325. a lot of the same miracles

  326. that Moses did

  327. under God's command.

  328. You see that in other places

  329. in the Old Testament.

  330. Prophets, false prophets

  331. doing miraculous things.

  332. You see that in Paul's ministry.

  333. He encountered this

  334. in Acts chapter 19

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  335. for an example.

  336. Jesus even said

  337. throughout history

  338. up until He comes back

  339. to this world,

  340. miracle workers

  341. will be found.

  342. Look at it in Matthew 24,

    Matthew 24:24

  343. verse 24.

  344. Jesus says,

  345. For false Christ's

  346. little sea

  347. and false prophets

  348. will arise

  349. and perform great signs

  350. and wonders

  351. so as to lead astray

  352. if possible

  353. even the elect,

  354. even true believers.

  355. There are some people

  356. who are empowered

  357. by the devil.

  358. There is spiritual warfare

  359. that goes on

  360. in this world

  361. that sort of what we call

  362. behind the scenes.

  363. and there are people

  364. who are doing

  365. some amazing,

  366. miraculous things

  367. in the power

  368. of the devil.

  369. And Jesus is talking

  370. about people

  371. who are actually deceived

  372. and deceiving people.

  373. They're not seeking

  374. to do what they do

  375. for God's glory.

  376. They're seeking

  377. to do what they do

  378. for their own

  379. or some other

  380. unacceptable means,

  381. reason.

  382. Jesus is emphasizing

  383. just another way here

  384. in verse 22

  385. that our faith,

  386. real faith,

  387. will result

  388. in us being

  389. obedient to God,

  390. doing God's will,

  391. living very practically

  392. daily a life

  393. that pleases God,

  394. that meets

  395. other people's needs,

  396. that serves other people,

  397. that upholds the truth,

  398. living an honest life,

  399. living a godly life.

  400. And I want you

  401. to note what Jesus

  402. says to those

  403. who think

  404. that a mere

  405. profession of faith

  406. or some kind

  407. of experiential

  408. miracle,

  409. sensational thing

  410. is the key

  411. to salvation.

  412. Look at verse 23,

  413. the last verse we read.

  414. And then I will

  415. declare to them,

  416. I never knew you.

  417. Depart from me,

  418. you workers

  419. of lawlessness.

  420. Jesus.

  421. These are some

  422. of the most chilling

  423. words in the Bible,

  424. aren't they?

  425. Jesus will say

  426. to somebody

  427. who thinks

  428. they're his follower

  429. on judgment day,

  430. I never knew you.

  431. Jesus is not talking

  432. about somebody

  433. losing their salvation.

  434. You see that.

  435. He's describing people

  436. that he never

  437. had a relationship with,

  438. people who never

  439. were saved.

  440. I never knew you.

  441. How could somebody

  442. be deceived like that?

  443. How could somebody

  444. think that they

  445. were true followers

  446. of Jesus when they

  447. were not?

  448. How does this

  449. happen today?

  450. How is it that there

  451. are people today

  452. who claim to be

  453. a Christian,

  454. but they're not?

  455. There's no real

  456. evidence in their life.

  457. No godly character.

  458. No doing God's will.

  459. Probably a lot of

  460. reasons could be cited,

  461. but here's one.

  462. They have a faulty

  463. understanding of what

  464. salvation is.

  465. You know,

  466. some people equate,

  467. and especially this is

  468. found in some

  469. Baptist churches.

  470. Some people think

  471. that salvation is

  472. somehow or another

  473. equated with,

  474. in a service like this,

  475. at the end of the

  476. service,

  477. walking down an aisle

  478. and taking a pastor

  479. by the hand and

  480. saying something to him.

  481. That's the dumbest

  482. thing that's ever

  483. been brought up

  484. in church life.

  485. To actually think

  486. that by just

  487. standing up and

  488. coming down and

  489. shaking the pastor's

  490. hand, that makes me

  491. right with God

  492. somehow.

  493. Or some people think

  494. because they have an

  495. emotional experience.

  496. They come to a church

  497. service the way things

  498. are, maybe something's

  499. said, a story's told,

  500. music and such,

  501. and they just break

  502. down, you know,

  503. they're thinking some

  504. good thoughts.

  505. And they're just sort

  506. of overcome with

  507. emotion.

  508. You know, I would

  509. never let you see

  510. this, but sometimes

  511. I can become

  512. overcome with

  513. emotion with

  514. certain country

  515. songs.

  516. I can cry.

  517. It just touches

  518. my heart.

  519. But it's not some

  520. kind of spiritual

  521. experience.

  522. It's an emotional.

  523. Touch your heart,

  524. touch your feelings,

  525. make you feel a

  526. certain way that

  527. absolutely does

  528. nothing to change

  529. your life.

  530. And because you

  531. had got emotional

  532. in church one Sunday

  533. and you walked down

  534. the aisle and

  535. shook a pastor's

  536. hand, and somehow

  537. or another you wound

  538. up getting baptized,

  539. that does not make

  540. you a Christian.

  541. That does not in any

  542. way equate to

  543. salvation.

  544. And you can't find

  545. it anywhere from

  546. Genesis to Revelation

  547. in your Bible that

  548. anything like that

  549. is what it means to

  550. become a Christian.

  551. Now, it could be, I

  552. don't want to discount

  553. this in any way, it

  554. could be that this

  555. morning even, the Lord

  556. could speak through

  557. this message.

  558. The Lord could just

  559. work through his

  560. spirit in your life to

  561. cause you to realize

  562. I'm not a Christian,

  563. but I want to be

  564. saved.

  565. And you right there

  566. where you're sitting

  567. right now, you just

  568. think to yourself, you

  569. say to God, I hate my

  570. sin, I want to turn

  571. from my sin, and I

  572. really do believe that

  573. when Jesus died on the

  574. cross, he died for me.

  575. And I trust him right

  576. now as my Savior.

  577. And when this service

  578. is over, you walk

  579. down the aisle and

  580. you tell me, I have

  581. put my faith and

  582. trust in Jesus this

  583. morning.

  584. You confessed your

  585. faith here, you want

  586. me to tell people here,

  587. or you want to tell

  588. people here, that's

  589. fine.

  590. That is, you walking

  591. down the aisle and

  592. telling me or telling

  593. the congregation, that's

  594. just an external way of

  595. expressing what internally

  596. happened.

  597. And every Christian

  598. should be baptized in a

  599. baptism or in a

  600. pond or a church

  601. or a lake or river or

  602. somewhere, every

  603. Christian.

  604. See, that's the New

  605. Testament way for

  606. Christians to make it

  607. known that they are

  608. followers of Jesus, to be

  609. baptized.

  610. But you know what

  611. baptism actually literally

  612. does?

  613. It just gets you wet or

  614. cold.

  615. Baptism is just a symbol,

  616. it's a picture of what

  617. happens when a person

  618. truly trusts in Jesus for

  619. their salvation.

  620. You go down in the water,

  621. it symbolizes you've died

  622. to the old person you

  623. were before you came to

  624. know Christ.

  625. You died and been buried,

  626. that old person.

  627. You come up out of the

  628. water, it symbolizes the

  629. new life that you have when

  630. you put your faith and

  631. trust in Jesus to save you.

  632. Jesus wants us to

  633. understand real salvation.

  634. salvation.

  635. It's not these external,

  636. emotional things that we

  637. sometimes equate with that.

  638. Salvation is a gracious

  639. work of God in which He

  640. works in a person in their

  641. mind to cause them to think,

  642. in their heart to cause them

  643. to feel.

  644. At some point in their mouth

  645. to cause them to profess

  646. faith.

  647. And God so works when He

  648. does all these kind of

  649. things, He changes us and

  650. our lives will show it by

  651. our desire to know and do

  652. God's will.

  653. A person is saved when God

  654. convicts them of their sin,

  655. that they are separated from

  656. Him because of their sin.

  657. And God, when He convicts a

  658. person, He's not just making

  659. it known they're sinful.

  660. Every one of us in here, we

  661. know we're sinners.

  662. You find the sorriest human

  663. being you know.

  664. The person who would just

  665. say, I hate God.

  666. And they would say, yeah,

  667. I know I'm a sinner.

  668. Knowing you're a sinner means

  669. nothing.

  670. That's just, you're an idiot if

  671. you don't think you're a

  672. sinner.

  673. You've deceived yourself.

  674. You're a liar to yourself if

  675. you don't think you are a

  676. sinner.

  677. We all know we are sinful

  678. people.

  679. But when God truly is one who

  680. makes that known, makes it

  681. aware, we feel guilty.

  682. We feel broken.

  683. We have dishonored, offended

  684. Him, broken His laws.

  685. And if God's doing that work

  686. in us, we'll want to stop it.

  687. We'll want to change our

  688. minds.

  689. We want to turn from that

  690. kind of thinking and living.

  691. That's repentance.

  692. When God works in us to save

  693. us, He convicts us of our sin.

  694. He gives us a desire to repent,

  695. to turn from it, change our

  696. mind.

  697. And God really does open up our

  698. spiritual eyes, so to speak,

  699. and causes us to see that when

  700. Jesus died on the cross, He died

  701. for me.

  702. He paid the penalty for my sin.

  703. And I trust Him.

  704. I love Him.

  705. I'm committing my life to Him.

  706. That's how God works to save a

  707. person.

  708. And when God does this in us, we

  709. not only trust Jesus as our Savior,

  710. as John Blanchard talked about

  711. last week, we simultaneously will

  712. submit to Him as the Lord, the

  713. master, the boss of our lives.

  714. You see, if we really understand

  715. that Jesus gave His life for me,

  716. we want to give our lives back to

  717. Him in return.

  718. He's bought us.

  719. Paul talks about that with His life.

  720. And so real salvation is a trust in

  721. Jesus.

  722. It's a commitment to Him.

  723. It's a love for Him.

  724. That will in some way, or a lot of

  725. ways rather, change who we are.

  726. It will never make us perfect in

  727. this world.

  728. We'll still have that sinful nature.

  729. We're still going to come up short.

  730. We're not going to do God's will

  731. perfectly.

  732. But we'll have the desire to.

  733. And we will, because God motivates us

  734. from within, we'll want to do His will.

  735. We'll put forth the effort to do it.

  736. That's how the Holy Spirit will work in

  737. us.

  738. Now, Jesus is telling us here in Matthew

  739. 7, some people have false, undeserved

  740. assurance.

  741. You need to ask the question of yourself.

  742. Is He talking about me?

  743. Next, we're going to deal with in this

  744. series, not today.

  745. Well, the second kind of assurance we're

  746. going to deal with is uncertain

  747. assurance.

  748. It's possible to be a Christian but

  749. lack assurance.

  750. That's why John wrote the book of 1

  751. John.

  752. 1 John chapter 5, verse 13, says this.

    1 John 5:13

  753. Look at it on the screen.

  754. I write these things to you who believe

  755. in the name of the Son of God that you

  756. may know that you have eternal life.

  757. He wrote that because evidently he knew

  758. there were people, Christians, who didn't

  759. know, who wondered, who struggled, who

  760. doubted.

  761. Most Christians doubt their salvation at

  762. some time or other.

  763. It doesn't make you an inferior Christian

  764. or less spiritual Christian.

  765. I truly believe that if a person thinks

  766. and understands what God has called us to

  767. do, how He's called us to live, and we

  768. have experienced at times in our life a

  769. true desire, a love for following Jesus,

  770. being like Him, I truly believe that when

  771. we fail to do that, when we, as some

  772. people would use the word, when we backslide,

  773. when we move away from the Lord, when we

  774. become indifferent, I think it's very

  775. natural at that point in time to doubt our

  776. salvation.

  777. I don't think God's going to give any person

  778. true, confident assurance if they're living

  779. in indifference or rebellion against Him.

  780. That's just not how it works.

  781. We're going to be learning that, seeing that

  782. in the book of 1 John over the next few

  783. weeks.

  784. We're going to look at some of the reasons

  785. why people may have doubts and how to deal

  786. with our doubts over the next few weeks.

  787. There's a third kind of assurance.

  788. Our goal in this series is for all of us to

  789. have or develop undisputed assurance, good

  790. assurance, confident assurance.

  791. John's telling us the reason he wrote the

  792. letter, just what we read in verse 13 of

  793. chapter 5, is to give Christians assurance of

  794. their salvation.

  795. We can and we should, if we're Christians,

  796. have assurance that we really are children of

  797. God.

  798. If you struggle with a lack of assurance,

  799. the first and best thing you can do is read

  800. slowly, carefully, prayerfully this little book

  801. of 1 John.

  802. That's where we're going to spend most of our

  803. time in the next few weeks.

  804. Now I want to ask you, as we begin this series,

  805. this study, what kind of assurance do you have?

  806. Do you have an undeserved assurance, a false

  807. assurance that God's made known to you this

  808. morning?

  809. Or if you suspect this is true, you really need to

  810. get serious about this and ask God to clearly reveal

  811. to you where you stand with Him.

  812. Don't go through this day without spending some time

  813. with Him.

  814. Spending some time in 1 John.

  815. Don't try to justify yourself.

  816. This is one place where you want to be honest with God and

  817. hear Him and be clear.

  818. And make sure you're right with Him.

  819. Do you have an uncertain assurance?

  820. Don't rest.

  821. Don't be satisfied with that.

  822. Don't give up and say that's the way it's going to be.

  823. No, it doesn't have to be that way.

  824. Having uncertain assurance, doubts, will rob you of the joy and

  825. the satisfaction, the confidence that you should have as a

  826. child of God.

  827. It will keep you from serving God in a meaningful, productive

  828. kind of way.

  829. So again, read 1 John.

  830. Hopefully you have an unquestioned assurance, confident

  831. assurance.

  832. And as you read the book of 1 John, if you are God's child, it

  833. should just be affirming to you.

  834. I want to end this service by asking you to bow with me in

  835. prayer right now.

  836. I want to direct a prayer.

  837. Please bow.

  838. Heads bowed.

  839. Eyes closed.

  840. Some in this room most likely are not Christians and you know it.

  841. And I want to ask you right now, if that bothers you, if you don't

  842. want to be that way, if you want to have a right relationship with

  843. God, admit to Him that you don't.

  844. Turn from your sins.

  845. Change your mind.

  846. Put your trust in Jesus and call upon Him to save you right now.

  847. Some in here are Christians but you lack assurance.

  848. Don't just accept that.

  849. Ask God to speak through His Word and His Spirit to give you

  850. confidence.

  851. Ask God to help you to do that as you read through the book of 1 John.

  852. Some in this room have good assurance because you are a committed Christian.

  853. I want to encourage you to thank God for that and ask Him to help you to grow and to mature and

  854. become a source of strength and encouragement and help to others.

  855. Father, help us to know what we need to do individually so that we might respond appropriately.

  856. Work in us.

  857. Help us to know and help us to obey you now.

  858. And in an attitude of prayer, you listen to the Lord and you obey Him.

  859. I'll be here at the front and be happy to pray with you.

  860. Help you in any way.

  861. If you think that would be helpful at this time.
