  1. Over the years, I've had people to ask me all kinds of questions.

  2. Some people have come to me and raised serious questions about their marriage,

  3. continuing or ending it.

  4. I've had people to come and talk about dealing with difficult people in their lives,

  5. maybe somebody they worked with or even in their own home,

  6. just all kinds of things.

  7. And in those situations, most of the time, if I'm asked a question,

  8. and I have a good idea of what the answer ought to be in terms of what the Bible says,

  9. I'll just say it.

  10. Some of you, we've had some conversations over the years,

  11. maybe about some difficult issues going on in your life,

  12. and I've maybe said some things that you didn't want me to,

  13. you expected me to.

  14. But I needed to because the Scripture was real clear about it.

  15. Well, one of the most important, vital questions that I could ever be asked

  16. or that you could ever be asked is by someone who is struggling

  17. with assurance about their relationship with the Lord.

  18. Someone who is just, they're having difficulty knowing,

  19. am I really right with God?

  20. Am I really a Christian?

  21. If they ask you, if they ask me just point blank,

  22. do you think I am a Christian?

  23. I'm not going to give them a yes or no answer.

  24. And I don't think you should either.

  25. And here's why.

  26. I don't know what's in a person's heart, and neither do you.

  27. We don't know what's going on inside a person.

  28. So I think we need to be very careful about giving a definite answer.

  29. But there is a definite answer.

  30. It's an answer that only God can give, though.

  31. But when somebody comes to you, and I think if you're a serious Christian,

  32. people know that you love the Lord, you seek to live a faithful Christian life,

  33. between family, extended family, friends, people you work with,

  34. sooner or later people have got to ask you a spiritual related type question.

  35. And sometimes it may be in the realm of, do you think I'm a Christian?

  36. Or what does it mean to be a Christian?

  37. We don't need to put them off.

  38. We don't need to be afraid.

  39. What we do need to do is point them to the Scriptures

  40. and tell them, you know, I can't look inside you and I can't tell,

  41. but God knows and God has actually given us some information in His Word

  42. designed to help us to know if we really are Christians.

  43. And point them to the book of 1 John 1.

  44. It was really written, one of the main reasons, not the only reason,

  45. one of the main reasons was to give Christians assurance of their salvation.

  46. We've looked at that over the last three or four weeks now

  47. as we've been going through this series.

  48. Look at it one more time.

  49. 1 John chapter 5 and verse 13.

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  50. John writes,

  51. We can, you and I, we can help people who are struggling with assurance

  52. by pointing out what John says in this letter

  53. about what true Christians believe and how they live.

  54. When it comes to helping someone with assurance,

  55. you may, if you know them real well,

  56. known them for a long time,

  57. you may say to them,

  58. well, from what I can see in you,

  59. from what I know about you over many years,

  60. you appear to be a Christian.

  61. But always be careful

  62. because you don't really know.

  63. You don't know a person's motive.

  64. You don't know what they're thinking.

  65. The 11 disciples of Jesus

  66. followed Jesus for three years

  67. with one, the 12th, named Judas,

  68. that from all we read in the Gospels,

  69. he appeared to be the real deal.

  70. He appeared to be a genuine follower of Jesus.

  71. But at the end, the end of Jesus' ministry,

  72. we know that he wasn't because he betrayed Jesus.

  73. Judas, in time, gave evidence

  74. that he wasn't really a true follower of Jesus.

  75. But the other 11 didn't know that

  76. until he betrayed Jesus.

  77. See, at the Last Supper,

  78. Jesus said something to the disciples

  79. about one of you is going to betray me.

  80. And a lot of you, you remember what they said?

  81. They looked at Jesus.

  82. They looked at one another.

  83. They looked at Jesus and said,

  84. Lord, is it I?

  85. They didn't know it was Judas

  86. until he revealed

  87. that he was a betrayer.

  88. That's why we cannot give anyone assurance

  89. of their salvation

  90. because we don't really know.

  91. But God can.

  92. And God desires for everybody

  93. who is truly a Christian

  94. to know it,

  95. to have comfort in that,

  96. to be assured that their relationship with him

  97. is good, is healthy, is right.

  98. And the way God does that,

  99. the way he provides comfort and assurance

  100. is through his spirit

  101. that he puts in every one of us

  102. when he saves us.

  103. I've said it for years,

  104. over and over again,

  105. and we've looked at it

  106. in various messages,

  107. various perspectives.

  108. But I want you to look very plainly.

  109. The Holy Spirit indwells every Christian

  110. as Paul just says it

  111. in 1 Corinthians 6, verse 19.

    1 Corinthians 6:19

  112. Look at it.

  113. Do you not know,

  114. writing to Christians now,

  115. writing to the church at Corinth,

  116. do you not know that your bodies

  117. are temples of the Holy Spirit

  118. who is in you,

  119. whom you have received from God?

  120. Very clear, isn't it?

  121. The Holy Spirit is in you.

  122. You have received him from God.

  123. The Holy Spirit indwells you

  124. if you're a Christian.

  125. Next thing I want us to say

  126. is the Holy Spirit is the one

  127. who actually gives us assurance.

  128. The Holy Spirit living within us

  129. if we're Christians.

  130. He's the one that will give us

  131. that assurance that we want,

  132. that we desire.

  133. Look at two passages.

  134. 1 John chapter 4, verse 13.

    1 John 4:13

  135. And God has given us his spirit

  136. as proof that we live in him

  137. and he in us.

  138. That's in the New Living Translation.

  139. And then look at what Paul said

  140. in Romans chapter 6,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  141. or chapter 8 rather,

  142. in verse 16.

  143. The Spirit himself bears witness

  144. with our spirit

  145. that we are children of God.

  146. The Spirit lives within us.

  147. He will give us assurance.

  148. But now I want us to think,

  149. how does he do that?

  150. How should we look?

  151. How should we expect the Holy Spirit

  152. to give us assurance

  153. that we are children of God

  154. if we're struggling?

  155. How can we help someone

  156. that we know and care about

  157. if they're struggling?

  158. Let's look at how he provides

  159. such assurance.

  160. Number one,

  161. the Holy Spirit gives us assurance

  162. by affirming

  163. that the Bible's description

  164. of a Christian

  165. is true about us.

  166. The Holy Spirit gives us assurance

  167. by affirming,

  168. confirming within us

  169. that the things the Bible says

  170. will be true about a Christian,

  171. it's true about us.

  172. I want you to look at how he does that

  173. by looking back

  174. to some of the things

  175. we looked at last week

  176. in 1 John

  177. about what a true Christian is,

  178. what a true Christian believes.

  179. Look, number one,

  180. a true Christian has a personal relationship

  181. with God and Jesus Christ.

  182. We looked at that last week

  183. and sort of expounded on that

  184. and what 1 John says.

  185. But I want you to understand,

  186. nobody comes into the world

  187. automatically in a right relationship

  188. with God.

  189. When we're born into this world,

  190. we are separated from God.

  191. We don't know God.

  192. We cannot know Him on our own.

  193. The Scripture tells us,

  194. look what Paul says

  195. in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  196. As it is written,

  197. there is no one righteous,

  198. not even one.

  199. There is no one who understands.

  200. There is no one who seeks God.

  201. Now, there is a lot of people

  202. who seek an idea about God.

  203. There is a lot of people in this world

  204. whose lives are in turmoil

  205. and they certainly want peace.

  206. There is a lot of people

  207. who live in guilt

  208. and they want to be freed from that guilt.

  209. There is a lot of people

  210. who are looking for something

  211. to fill the void in their life.

  212. They understand about religion.

  213. They understand about various gods.

  214. And so a lot of people are searching for a God

  215. that they think might can help them,

  216. make them feel better about themselves

  217. or something like that.

  218. What Paul is saying here is,

  219. no one comes into this world

  220. truly seeking the God who is

  221. as He is.

  222. And the reason is because

  223. we're born with a sinful nature.

  224. Every person in here who has had children,

  225. who has grandchildren,

  226. who's been around children,

  227. you know that.

  228. You never have to teach these little kids

  229. to fight one another,

  230. to not share,

  231. to say no,

  232. disobey their parents.

  233. It's just who they are.

  234. They get it from us.

  235. It's an inherited sinful nature.

  236. Now,

  237. the Bible describes this another way.

  238. Being spiritually dead.

  239. Look at what Paul said to the Ephesians.

  240. In Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  241. he's going to sort of lay it out

  242. to these people,

  243. these Christians,

  244. who they were before they came to know Christ

  245. and how God worked in them so graciously

  246. to save them through faith in Jesus.

  247. And he begins chapter 2 by saying,

  248. as for you,

  249. you were dead in transgressions and sins.

  250. You were spiritually dead.

  251. That's why you didn't care about God.

  252. That's why you would not seek God.

  253. That's how we all come into the world.

  254. And it's the Spirit of God,

  255. if a person is going to become a Christian,

  256. if a person is going to be saved,

  257. made a child of God,

  258. it'll be because the Spirit of God

  259. does this supernatural work of regeneration,

  260. the new birth,

  261. that Jesus described in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  262. In John chapter 3,

    John 3 chapter mention

  263. Jesus has a conversation

  264. with a very religious,

  265. upstanding man,

  266. Nicodemus,

  267. a Pharisee,

  268. who basically

  269. thinks he's right with God

  270. because of his good works.

  271. But Jesus is letting him know,

  272. no, that's not the case.

  273. There's got to be a change

  274. that takes place in a person.

  275. Jesus referred to it

  276. as a birth from above

  277. or a second birth,

  278. a new birth.

  279. I want you to look at

  280. something Jesus said to Nicodemus

  281. in the middle of this conversation.

  282. It's in John chapter 3,

    John 3:6–8

  283. verses 6 through 8.

  284. He says,

  285. humans can reproduce

  286. only human life.

  287. That's what we do, isn't it?

  288. But the Holy Spirit

  289. gives birth

  290. to spiritual life.

  291. So don't be surprised

  292. when I say

  293. you must be born again.

  294. The wind blows

  295. wherever it wants,

  296. just as you can hear the wind

  297. but can't tell

  298. where it comes from

  299. or where it's going,

  300. so you can't explain

  301. how people are born

  302. of the Spirit.

  303. The Holy Spirit does a

  304. mysterious,

  305. supernatural work

  306. when he saves a person,

  307. when he changes a person,

  308. when he regenerates a person.

  309. Jesus says,

  310. unless you're born again,

  311. you cannot see the kingdom

  312. of heaven.

  313. It's the Spirit of God

  314. who brings this about.

  315. And when the Spirit of God

  316. does this,

  317. here's how we can understand it,

  318. how we can think about it.

  319. When the Holy Spirit

  320. does this work of regeneration,

  321. he opens our spiritual eyes,

  322. he opens our eyes of faith

  323. to really believe,

  324. understand,

  325. grasp hold of the fact

  326. that Jesus is the Son of God,

  327. that when he died on the cross,

  328. he paid the penalty

  329. for my sins.

  330. It's the Holy Spirit

  331. who causes us

  332. to be able to believe that,

  333. accept that.

  334. Everybody does it.

  335. The Spirit does not do this

  336. in every one.

  337. But when he does work

  338. this work of regeneration,

  339. he will enable us

  340. to understand and truly believe.

  341. As Paul says

  342. in 1 Corinthians 12, 3,

  343. Paul makes it very clear,

  344. no one can say

  345. Jesus is Lord

  346. except

  347. in the Holy Spirit

  348. or by the Holy Spirit.

  349. Anybody can mouth words,

  350. but no one can truly say

  351. Jesus is the God

  352. of my life

  353. and mean it.

  354. No one will ever say,

  355. I'm not my own boss.

  356. I'm living under

  357. the authority of Jesus.

  358. No one will ever say that

  359. unless the Spirit of God

  360. works in them

  361. to regenerate them,

  362. to save them,

  363. to change them.

  364. Now let's make this personal.

  365. I want you to think.

  366. If you have been convicted

  367. that you are a sinner

  368. before God,

  369. if you're convicted

  370. that you're not right with God,

  371. there's something in you

  372. that's wrong,

  373. you've offended God,

  374. you've disobeyed Him,

  375. you know you're separated

  376. from Him

  377. and it bothers you.

  378. I mean,

  379. it really disturbs you

  380. to know that you are

  381. separated from God,

  382. a sinner before God,

  383. hopeless without Him,

  384. if it bothers you

  385. to the point that

  386. you've admitted that to God

  387. and you've really changed

  388. your mind

  389. about the way you're living.

  390. Something has happened

  391. and you no longer

  392. want to just live for you,

  393. you want to live

  394. and do things God's way.

  395. Well,

  396. that's the Spirit of God

  397. working in you,

  398. making you aware

  399. of your sin

  400. and enabling you

  401. to repent,

  402. to change your mind,

  403. to turn from your sin.

  404. So if you have

  405. those kind of thoughts

  406. and desires

  407. and that,

  408. what I've just said

  409. is a description of you,

  410. that is a great sign

  411. that you're a Christian

  412. because that's the Spirit

  413. of God working in you.

  414. Now,

  415. let's go a step further.

  416. if you really believe

  417. that Jesus Christ,

  418. as He is presented

  419. in the Bible,

  420. in the New Testament,

  421. in the Gospels in particular,

  422. if you really believe

  423. He is the Son of God

  424. and He came into this world

  425. for the purpose

  426. of saving you

  427. by dying on the cross

  428. and on the cross

  429. paying the penalty,

  430. taking the punishment

  431. that you deserve

  432. because you're the one

  433. who sinned,

  434. if you really believe

  435. that Jesus died on the cross

  436. to pay the penalty

  437. for your sins,

  438. that God supernaturally

  439. raised Him

  440. from the grave

  441. after He was crucified,

  442. buried,

  443. if you truly believe

  444. that this risen King

  445. died for your sins,

  446. you trust Him.

  447. He is the living Lord

  448. and you have committed

  449. your life to Him.

  450. You love Him.

  451. You want to follow Him.

  452. That's your desire.

  453. We're not talking about

  454. milder than words now.

  455. If that's how you think,

  456. if that's how you feel,

  457. if that's real to you,

  458. that's the Spirit of God.

  459. You don't think like that.

  460. You don't feel like that.

  461. You don't live like that

  462. on your own.

  463. That's the Spirit of God,

  464. the supernatural,

  465. regenerating work

  466. of the Holy Spirit

  467. who enables us,

  468. causes us to want

  469. to turn from our sins

  470. and put our trust in Jesus.

  471. So you need to think.

  472. What's the Holy Spirit

  473. saying to me

  474. about this attitude

  475. or desire

  476. or thing about

  477. repentance and faith?

  478. The second thing

  479. we looked at last week

  480. is this.

  481. A true Christian desires

  482. to please God

  483. by the way he or she lives.

  484. We looked at three things

  485. last week.

  486. Number one,

  487. a true Christian

  488. will desire to obey

  489. God's Word.

  490. Look at it.

  491. And by this we know

  492. that we have come

  493. to know Him

  494. if we keep His commandments.

  495. Doesn't get any clearer

  496. than that, does it?

  497. Number two,

  498. a true Christian

  499. will desire to stop

  500. living a sinful life.

  501. Look again,

  502. 1 John 3.

  503. No one born of God

  504. makes a practice

  505. of sinning.

  506. How clear can this be?

  507. No one who is born of God

  508. makes a practice

  509. of sinning

  510. for God's seed

  511. abides in him.

  512. He's talking about

  513. the Spirit of God

  514. as we referred to

  515. last week.

  516. And he cannot

  517. keep on sinning

  518. because he's been

  519. born of God.

  520. It's like this.

  521. If the Spirit of God

  522. lives within you,

  523. He gives you a desire

  524. to live a life

  525. that pleases God

  526. and not sin.

  527. If the Spirit of God

  528. lives within you,

  529. He is going to give you

  530. a desire to be

  531. sexually pure.

  532. Doesn't mean you won't

  533. be tempted,

  534. not be.

  535. If the Spirit of God

  536. lives within you,

  537. He is going to

  538. work in you

  539. and cause you

  540. to not want

  541. to lash out

  542. in anger

  543. every time you

  544. don't get your way.

  545. The Spirit of God

  546. will work in us.

  547. And when we do sin,

  548. we won't be able

  549. to rest easy

  550. until we confess it

  551. and seek God's forgiveness.

  552. If you can just lust,

  553. be engaged in sexual

  554. immorality,

  555. cuss people out,

  556. be meaner than a snake

  557. and look them in the eye

  558. and say what you think,

  559. cheat,

  560. use,

  561. say whatever comes

  562. through your mind.

  563. If you can live that way

  564. and sleep good at night,

  565. you are not a Christian.

  566. The Spirit of God

  567. does not live in you.

  568. If you think so,

  569. you have been deceived

  570. by the devil himself.

  571. You have a false sense

  572. of what salvation is.

  573. I want you to understand

  574. that very clearly.

  575. A Christian

  576. can and will

  577. sin terribly.

  578. But when I do

  579. my sinful things

  580. in rebellion,

  581. not doing what I know

  582. God wants me to do,

  583. God whips me.

  584. I don't want to look

  585. you in the eye.

  586. I don't sleep well

  587. until I confess my sin

  588. and agree with God

  589. about it

  590. and turn from it.

  591. I don't want to live

  592. that way.

  593. The Spirit of God

  594. within me

  595. won't let me live that way

  596. because He's there.

  597. He's changed me.

  598. What the Scripture says,

  599. no one born of God

  600. makes a practice of sinning

  601. for God's seed abides in him

  602. and He cannot keep on sinning

  603. because He's been born of God.

  604. It's just an impossibility.

  605. Clear as it can be.

  606. Number three,

  607. a genuine Christian

  608. will have a desire

  609. to live a pure life

  610. and everyone

  611. who thus hopes in Him,

  612. that's talking about Jesus,

  613. purifies himself

  614. as He is pure.

  615. So let's make this personal now.

  616. Do you have these kind of desires

  617. to obey God's Word?

  618. To not engage in sinful behavior?

  619. Not dwell on sinful attitudes?

  620. Do you have a desire

  621. to live a morally pure life?

  622. If you have those kind of desires,

  623. that's a good sign

  624. the Spirit of God

  625. is living within you.

  626. He's the one

  627. who does those kind of things,

  628. causes us to desire

  629. those kind of things.

  630. But if that's not characteristic

  631. of who you are,

  632. the Spirit must be absent.

  633. And if the Spirit's absent,

  634. you are not a child of God.

  635. We also saw last week

  636. that a true Christian

  637. genuinely loves

  638. his or her brothers

  639. and sisters in Christ.

  640. Look at what John said.

  641. We know that we've passed

  642. out of death into life

  643. because we love the brothers.

  644. Whoever does not love

  645. abides in death.

  646. It's very clear

  647. the love for our brothers

  648. and sisters in Christ

  649. is a sign

  650. that we have spiritual life.

  651. We've been born again.

  652. The Holy Spirit just gives us

  653. that love for one another.

  654. We went into a lot of detail

  655. about that.

  656. We may not like everybody,

  657. but there will be this

  658. love for our brothers

  659. and sisters in Christ

  660. that's Spirit-given.

  661. Now,

  662. one of the major

  663. indications

  664. of the Holy Spirit's

  665. work in our lives

  666. will be that

  667. we are people who love.

  668. And that leads us

  669. to the next thing

  670. I want us to see.

  671. The Holy Spirit gives,

  672. excuse me,

  673. the Holy Spirit gives us

  674. assurance

  675. by producing

  676. spiritual fruit

  677. in us.

  678. I want you to think

  679. about this.

  680. This is found

  681. in Galatians chapter 5

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  682. beginning in verse 16.

  683. What I want you to see

  684. first,

  685. we're not going to read

  686. the whole,

  687. most of that chapter,

  688. but I want you to see

  689. the Holy Spirit

  690. will lead us

  691. to say no

  692. to the desires

  693. of our sinful nature.

  694. I want you to look

  695. at Galatians 5

  696. beginning in verse 19 here.

  697. Now the works

  698. of the flesh,

  699. the word flesh here

  700. is another word

  701. for the sinful nature.

  702. In fact,

  703. some of you are looking

  704. at a translation

  705. and it says,

  706. now the works

  707. of the sinful nature.

  708. Let's read it.

  709. Now the works

  710. of the flesh

  711. are evident.

  712. That which is not

  713. of God,

  714. that which is

  715. of our sinful nature

  716. is evident.

  717. Look at it,

  718. just a list here.

  719. Sexual immorality,

  720. impurity,

  721. sensuality,

  722. idolatry,

  723. sorcery,

  724. enmity,

  725. strife,

  726. jealousy,

  727. fits of anger,

  728. rivalries,

  729. dissensions,

  730. divisions,

  731. envy,

  732. drunkenness,

  733. orgies,

  734. and things like these.

  735. I warn you

  736. as I warned you

  737. before,

  738. those who do

  739. such things

  740. will not inherit

  741. the kingdom of God.

  742. That's what I was

  743. talking about

  744. a while ago.

  745. If you ever get mad

  746. at me for saying

  747. something like that,

  748. I don't care.

  749. I won't lose

  750. a wink of sleep

  751. because I'm just

  752. telling you

  753. what the scripture

  754. says,

  755. what the scripture

  756. says is what God

  757. says,

  758. and I don't apologize

  759. for repeating

  760. the word of God.

  761. And you should not

  762. ever shy away

  763. from speaking

  764. the truth in love

  765. that comes from

  766. God's word.

  767. if you really

  768. and truly love

  769. your children,

  770. your grandchildren,

  771. your nieces

  772. and nephews,

  773. your parents,

  774. your grandparents,

  775. and they're just

  776. what appears to be

  777. based on what

  778. we're looking at

  779. this morning,

  780. if you know people

  781. that what they call

  782. their Christian life

  783. is just a sham,

  784. there's no real

  785. evidence,

  786. you need to call

  787. them out

  788. in love,

  789. in a way

  790. that lets them

  791. know you hate

  792. to say it,

  793. but you need

  794. to let them

  795. know what you

  796. call being a

  797. Christian is

  798. nowhere in

  799. scripture.

  800. The Bible is

  801. clear how a

  802. Christian will

  803. live,

  804. what we will

  805. desire.

  806. We'll see in a

  807. moment,

  808. none of us does

  809. it perfectly.

  810. We still have this

  811. sinful nature and

  812. we still fail

  813. miserably,

  814. but there's a

  815. difference in when

  816. a Christian fails

  817. and when an

  818. unbeliever fails.

  819. A Christian cares,

  820. is broken,

  821. feels guilt,

  822. guilt.

  823. Now,

  824. look at those

  825. things.

  826. We have such

  827. desires as

  828. Christians.

  829. We battle such

  830. temptations,

  831. sometimes we fail

  832. and give in to

  833. them.

  834. But if we are

  835. indwelled by the

  836. Spirit of God,

  837. as we saw just a

  838. moment ago,

  839. we'll be broken,

  840. we'll be guilty,

  841. and we'll not be

  842. able to rest easy

  843. until we confess

  844. and repent and

  845. seek God's

  846. forgiveness.

  847. forgiveness.

  848. Now, our true

  849. desires as

  850. children of God,

  851. because we're

  852. indwelled by the

  853. Spirit, will be to

  854. cooperate with the

  855. Spirit and develop

  856. the fruit of the

  857. Spirit that Paul

  858. talks about in

  859. verses 22 and 23.

  860. Look at it.

  861. But the fruit of the

  862. Spirit is love,

  863. joy, peace,

  864. patience, kindness,

  865. goodness, faithfulness,

  866. gentleness, self-control.

  867. Against such things,

  868. there is no law.

  869. If we're truly

  870. Christians and

  871. dwell by the

  872. Spirit of God,

  873. those character

  874. qualities are things

  875. that we desire,

  876. that we admire,

  877. that we want to

  878. develop,

  879. and we want our

  880. lives to demonstrate

  881. them,

  882. because the Spirit of

  883. God causes us to

  884. desire this.

  885. Now,

  886. we'll never

  887. demonstrate these

  888. qualities perfectly,

  889. but we should be

  890. making some progress

  891. in them.

  892. It's a lifelong

  893. process.

  894. As the Chuck

  895. Swindoll book title

  896. goes, a true

  897. Christian will desire

  898. to live this kind

  899. of life, will

  900. desire to cooperate

  901. with the Holy Spirit,

  902. but will never do it

  903. perfectly.

  904. But over time, we

  905. should see that we're

  906. making three steps

  907. forward, even though

  908. there are times that

  909. we take two steps

  910. back.

  911. But over time,

  912. over years, three

  913. steps forward and

  914. two steps back, we're

  915. still making a little

  916. bit of progress, and

  917. we should be able to

  918. see progress in our

  919. lives.

  920. If you've been a

  921. Christian for ten

  922. years, there ought to

  923. be more love, joy,

  924. peace, patience,

  925. kindness, goodness,

  926. faithfulness, gentleness,

  927. and self-control in

  928. your life now than there

  929. was ten years ago, or

  930. five years ago.

  931. That means you've

  932. arrived, that none of

  933. it is full-blown

  934. perfect or anything like

  935. that.

  936. There should be

  937. evidence of the

  938. Spirit of God

  939. working, developing

  940. this character of

  941. Christ in you if

  942. you're a Christian.

  943. So look at yourself.

  944. Quickly, one more

  945. thing the Holy Spirit

  946. does in the life of a

  947. Christian.

  948. He creates within us a

  949. loving relationship with

  950. God as our Father.

  951. Now I want you to look

  952. at what Paul says in

  953. Romans 8, 14 through

  954. 16.

  955. Paul writes, for all

  956. who are led by the

  957. Spirit of God are

  958. sons of God.

  959. For you have received

  960. the Spirit of adoption

  961. as sons or daughters,

  962. by whom we cry, Abba,

  963. Father.

  964. The Spirit himself bears

  965. witness with our spirit

  966. that we are children of

  967. God.

  968. Paul is describing here

  969. how the Holy Spirit

  970. gives us an inner sense

  971. of closeness with God.

  972. The Holy Spirit works in

  973. our lives as Christians

  974. to enable us to

  975. understand we are

  976. children of God and to

  977. feel this sense of

  978. closeness that we can

  979. call him Father.

  980. That word Abba is an

  981. Aramaic word that means

  982. Father and was used in

  983. the home, in a home by

  984. children.

  985. Maybe even like our word

  986. dad.

  987. Or maybe even if you have

  988. a close relationship with

  989. a grandfather.

  990. Pop.

  991. You know, those really are

  992. special words, aren't they?

  993. The fathers in here.

  994. If you're, you've got a

  995. child that has, does,

  996. call you dad.

  997. That signals something

  998. special, doesn't it?

  999. There was only one man in

1000. my life that I called dad.

1001. I had two grandfathers on

  1002. both sides.

1003. I call them both Pop.

1004. I never was around them

  1005. together.

1006. So one of them away from

  1007. each other, they were

  1008. Papa Stone, Papa Williams,

1009. but in person they were

  1010. pop.

  1011. They were special.

1012. We should have a special

  1013. relationship with God.

  1014. It's nothing forced, it's

  1015. just natural.

  1016. It comes from within.

1017. Sometimes as you read the

1018. Bible, as a Christian, the

1019. spirit of God in you should

1020. just help you to understand

1021. God is speaking to me.

1022. This is God's word to me.

1023. Sometimes as you pray as a

1024. Christian, you just sense, I'm

1025. just really in the presence of

  1026. the Lord.

1027. I'm just really talking to him.

1028. Sometimes as a Christian, you may

1029. just be out in the woods one day,

1030. riding down the road one day,

1031. and you're, for whatever reason,

1032. you just sort of, your mind's, you

1033. know, you're not occupied about

1034. something else, and you're just

  1035. thinking about your relationship

1036. with God, and you just sense

1037. this closeness with him that the

1038. spirit of God is enabling you to

  1039. experience.

1040. You ought to know what I'm talking

  1041. about if you're a Christian.

1042. You know, it may be that you are

1043. lacking this kind of assurance right

1044. now because you're not close to God,

  1045. and you know why.

1046. Let's just wind it up right now.

1047. Do you have assurance of your

  1048. salvation?

1049. Are you sure, confident that you are

  1050. a child of God?

1051. If you are, you need to thank him

1052. because that's his spirit working in

  1053. you.

  1054. That's a real blessing.

1055. God has affirmed you, maybe as we've

1056. gone through this message, as you think

1057. about what a real Christian is according

1058. to scripture, is you just know the

1059. spirit of God has confirmed to your

1060. spirit that you're one with him.

  1061. Thank him for that.

  1062. Enjoy that.

1063. It's not because of who you are, what

  1064. you've done.

1065. It's all because of who Jesus is, what

  1066. he's done.

1067. And when you trust Jesus, God accepts

1068. you, and you know that, so just thank

  1069. God.

1070. But it could be that you don't have

1071. assurance of your salvation right now.

1072. But your thought process is this.

1073. I know what you've been talking about

  1074. this morning.

1075. Most of my life, I have had assurance

1076. because most of my life, well I've never

  1077. been perfect, I've never whole, I've

1078. never just, you know, been totally

1079. faithful, but all my life I have sent,

1080. sought to please God, to turn from sin,

1081. to study his word and do it.

1082. But for whatever reason right now, you

1083. just feel distant from God.

1084. And it could be that you know why.

1085. It could be that there's something going

1086. on in your life, maybe no one else knows

  1087. about it.

1088. But you've allowed something sin, selfish,

1089. something that you know is just totally

  1090. wrong, you've embraced it, you're

  1091. participating in it.

  1092. You know you shouldn't.

1093. God can, God's been whipping you about

  1094. it.

  1095. But you're just stubborn and you're

1096. holding out and you, you're not ready

1097. to give it up yet.

1098. And as a result of that, you don't have

  1099. good assurance.

1100. I'm glad you don't have good assurance.

1101. You should be glad you don't have good

  1102. assurance.

1103. Because that's the spirit of God not

  1104. letting you have assurance.

1105. But he will if you'll confess it as the

  1106. sin that it is.

1107. If you'll turn from it.

1108. It could be that there's no one thing.

1109. It could be that you've just allowed the

1110. busyness of life to cause you to drift

1111. away from the Lord and closeness with him.

1112. And the Lord is convicting you of that right

  1113. now.

1114. Come back to him in real confession,

  1115. repentance, renewing your commitment,

  1116. your love to him.

1117. Ask him to return to you the joy of your

  1118. salvation.

1119. But if you know, you say, there's no matter

  1120. about assurance.

  1121. I know I'm not a Christian.

1122. Maybe you're a member of this church or some

  1123. church.

1124. Maybe you've even been involved in the life of

  1125. the church.

1126. But as you compare the way you are, the way you

1127. think, feel, and live, the way the Bible says the

  1128. Christian will, it's obvious you're not.

1129. And if that bothers you, if that really disturbs you,

1130. and you don't want it to be that way, give it up.

1131. Admit to God, I am not a Christian, even though people

  1132. think I am.

  1133. Repent of your sin.

  1134. Change your mind.

  1135. Turn.

1136. Do an about face right now.

1137. Put your faith and trust in Jesus truly.

1138. Trust that he died for you when he died on the cross.

1139. Call upon him to save you.

1140. Surrender your life to him now.

1141. The Bible says that whoever calls on the name of the

  1142. Lord will be saved.

1143. And when we truly are, become children of God, the

1144. spirit will give us real assurance.

  1145. Call upon him now.

  1146. Let's pray together.

1147. Dear God, show us how we should respond now.

1148. Each one of us, in light of what you've said through your

1149. word, through your spirit, and in an attitude of prayer,

1150. listen to the Lord and do what he's saying.

1151. If I could pray with you during this time, I'd be happy to

  1152. do that.

1153. I'll be here at the front.

1154. But you do what it is that you know God's calling you to do.

1155. Maybe just give him thanks.

1156. Praise him for calling you to be his child, for giving you good

  1157. assurance.

1158. Maybe you need to come back to him.

1159. You know you're a Christian, but you're not close to him now.

1160. You're not enjoying real fellowship with him.

1161. Deal with whatever it is that's causing that.

  1162. Come back to God.

1163. If you know you're not a Christian, the only thing, the only way

1164. you're ever going to find relief and hope is to come to Christ

  1165. in faith and commitment.

1166. Pray, obey the Lord during these next few minutes.

  1167. Do we?

1168. Do we think about tune and preaching?

1169. Doing this right whenever the Bible doesn't exist.

  1170. You're not.

1171. The only thing abouts that you are when you're on the

1172. Lord is saying, listen to the rightklars class,

1173. it is a great day when you're on the earth,

1174. потому that you never could share it.

1175. And theingenness of Time Grizzly has been perfect.

1176. The Metiff comfort on Truth as one another life that of

1177. was being said before the Lord.
