  1. Back in November, when we did our Thanksgiving meal,

  2. I was sitting during the service while others were sharing

  3. about what they were thankful for that year.

  4. And I was really thinking, and I should have said it then, but I didn't,

  5. so I'm going to say it now.

  6. Over the years, I've been thinking about how,

  7. and I'm not sure when it exactly happened,

  8. but at this point, I realize what a loving church family that I have here

  9. and how you've become my family.

  10. And I love you so much.

  11. And my last church, many of you know parts of my story,

  12. and some of you don't, but we went through a very difficult time,

  13. went through some great conflict and division,

  14. and it really left me scarred and left me hurt a little bit.

  15. And I have healed over the years by being here,

  16. by individuals loving me and my family.

  17. And I just thank you for that.

  18. And I just wanted you to know that because, you know,

  19. I feel so close to you and you as my church family today.

  20. If you have your Bibles, I'd like to ask you to look with me,

  21. if you would, at 2 Kings.

  22. We're going to be looking at a couple different verses in 2 Kings.

  23. We're going to start there, what you see on the board, in chapter 18.

  24. But we'll be looking at a couple verses in chapter 17,

  25. and we'll be looking at some in chapter 19 as well.

  26. I will have them on the board in just a moment,

  27. but I always encourage you to look those up in your Bibles as well

  28. and read along in the Scripture.

  29. That gives you an opportunity to make sure that what we have there really is what's in the Word.

  30. It also keeps you bringing your Bibles, carrying your Bibles, using your Bibles.

  31. I hate to hear churches today that the people have basically quit carrying their Bibles with them

  32. and quit studying it for themselves.

  33. But never take anyone's Word.

  34. Never take my Word.

  35. Never take Fred's Word if it doesn't align with the Word of God

  36. because that is ultimately superior and supreme.

  37. But we're going to be looking in 2 Kings chapter 18, verses 17 through 25.

    2 Kings 18:17–25

  38. The king of Assyria sent his supreme commander,

  39. his chief officer and his field commander with a large army

  40. from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem.

  41. They came up to Jerusalem and stopped at the aqueduct of the upper pool

  42. on the road to the washerman's field.

  43. They called for the king.

  44. And Elikim, son of Hilkiah, the palace administrator,

  45. Shebna, the secretary, and Joah, son of Asaph, the recorder, went out to them.

  46. The field commander said to them,

  47. Tell Hezekiah, this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says.

  48. On what are you basing this confidence of yours?

  49. You say you have strategy and military strength, but you speak only empty words.

  50. On whom are you depending that you rebel against me?

  51. Look now, you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff,

  52. which pierces a man's hand and wounds him if he leans on it.

  53. Such is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to all who depend on him.

  54. And if you say to me, we are depending on the Lord our God,

  55. isn't he the one whose high places and altars has Akiah removed,

  56. saying to Judah in Jerusalem,

  57. You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem.

  58. Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria.

  59. I will give you 2,000 horses if you can put riders on them.

  60. How can you repulse one officer of the least of my master's officials,

  61. even though you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?

  62. Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the Lord?

  63. The Lord Himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.

  64. Let's call the Lord in prayer.

  65. Father, we thank you for this day,

  66. this opportunity to be together as the body of Christ.

  67. And I pray that as we study your word today,

  68. I pray that it is not my words that are heard,

  69. but it's the Holy Spirit speaking through your word

  70. to each and every heart here today.

  71. And I pray that this is a message that will uplift,

  72. that will encourage,

  73. and give us faith and hope to enter into a new year,

  74. holding tightly to your hand

  75. and going forth with confidence that you will be with us as you have in the past.

  76. And we praise you and we thank you, Lord, in Jesus' name.

  77. Amen.

  78. This morning we're going to see that King Hezekiah,

  79. that was the king of Judah,

  80. found himself in a very difficult position.

  81. You know, Judah had found themselves besieged,

  82. I should say Jerusalem,

  83. because the Assyrians had invaded the southern kingdom

  84. and had already conquered all of the fortified cities of Judah,

  85. say Jerusalem.

  86. And now they've surrounded Jerusalem

  87. and they've besieged it.

  88. At this time, the Assyrian army

  89. was the largest and most powerful army,

  90. certainly of the world.

  91. And they had already conquered the northern kingdom,

  92. which the northern kingdom of Israel consisted of 10 of the 12 tribes of Israel.

  93. And therefore, the southern kingdom was much smaller,

  94. consisting of only two of the 12 tribes of Israel.

  95. And Assyria has already conquered the larger tribe,

  96. or the kingdom.

  97. And therefore, you can see the position,

  98. or the predicament,

  99. that King Hezekiah finds himself in

  100. at this particular time,

  101. where the Assyrians have surrounded Jerusalem

  102. and have besieged them,

  103. and basically have given them very little choice,

  104. either surrender to the Assyrians,

  105. or to be destroyed,

  106. and certainly annihilated.

  107. And so what would King Hezekiah do?

  108. Would he trust in the Lord

  109. to deliver Judah from the hands of the Assyrians?

  110. Now when we think about that,

  111. he's going to trust the Lord,

  112. but the Lord raised up the Assyrians

  113. to defeat and destroy the northern kingdom.

  114. And so King Hezekiah, though,

  115. was not like the other kings of Israel or Judah.

  116. He had submitted himself to the Lord.

  117. But would he trust God to deliver them?

  118. And if God did not do that,

  119. if God failed to deliver them,

  120. then they risk being annihilated.

  121. They risked being destroyed

  122. and even exiled like other nations.

  123. Or could King Hezekiah

  124. decide to simply surrender to the Assyrians?

  125. They would be exported to other lands,

  126. but at least they would live,

  127. and they wouldn't be destroyed.

  128. In that day and time,

  129. when a conquering nation or military

  130. conquered a people,

  131. they would export them.

  132. They would take the leading people

  133. of that society or civilization,

  134. they'd take the skilled,

  135. they'd take the educated,

  136. they would take the important,

  137. maybe royal families,

  138. and important individuals,

  139. and they would move them

  140. and settle them into another land,

  141. maybe where they had already conquered.

  142. And eventually,

  143. those people groups would mix.

  144. And people say the northern kingdom

  145. would lose their identity altogether.

  146. And that's what has happened

  147. to the northern kingdom.

  148. The Assyrians came in,

  149. conquered them,

  150. put fish hooks in their mouths,

  151. and led them out,

  152. and settled them in lands

  153. that they had already conquered.

  154. But the northern kingdom

  155. has lost its identity.

  156. To us,

  157. the northern kingdom

  158. doesn't exist anymore.

  159. And from this point forward,

  160. all references to Israel,

  161. even today,

  162. is really a reference

  163. to the two tribes

  164. that made up the southern kingdom,

  165. or Judah.

  166. But verse 7 tells us

  167. that the Lord allowed that to happen.

  168. Why?

  169. Because of the sin

  170. of the northern kingdom.

  171. They had allowed themselves

  172. to abandon their faith in the Lord,

  173. and had gotten far away

  174. from keeping the covenant

  175. that God had made with Abraham.

  176. And they were worshiping other gods.

  177. And so,

  178. God raised up the Assyrians

  179. to come in

  180. and to conquer them

  181. and to lead them away.

  182. So,

  183. what would King Hezekiah do

  184. in this situation?

  185. Would he trust in the Lord,

  186. or would he surrender

  187. to the Assyrians

  188. and allow his people

  189. to be deported

  190. and maybe completely lose

  191. their identity?

  192. Often,

  193. the struggles

  194. that we face

  195. in life today,

  196. maybe they're not

  197. to the magnitude

  198. of what King Hezekiah

  199. found himself facing,

  200. but often,

  201. the struggles

  202. that we face

  203. in our lives today

  204. often seem

  205. bigger than ourselves.

  206. They seem greater

  207. than our abilities

  208. maybe to handle.

  209. You know,

  210. what are some of the struggles

  211. that you may have been facing?

  212. Maybe health issues,

  213. financial issues,

  214. marital issues,

  215. maybe struggling

  216. with a wayward child,

  217. maybe job issues.

  218. We face many different challenges

  219. and struggles

  220. in our lives today,

  221. and many of those

  222. seem to be greater

  223. than our own abilities

  224. to be able to handle.

  225. However,

  226. what I want us to see today

  227. as we study

  228. this situation

  229. that Hezekiah finds himself in,

  230. that if we will focus

  231. upon the Lord

  232. and His ability,

  233. then we will have faith

  234. and confidence

  235. that He will see us

  236. through these times,

  237. that the Lord

  238. will be with us

  239. in those moments.

  240. My secretary

  241. at my last church

  242. had a little cartoon

  243. beside her desk

  244. that I always enjoyed seeing.

  245. It said,

  246. instead of focusing

  247. upon how big

  248. the storm is,

  249. tell the storm

  250. how big your God is,

  251. and it's focusing

  252. on the Lord

  253. and God's ability

  254. to see us

  255. through those storms

  256. of life,

  257. see us through

  258. those difficulties

  259. and those hardships.

  260. And I think that

  261. if we will go

  262. into the new year,

  263. 2018,

  264. and whatever challenges

  265. we face,

  266. whatever difficulties

  267. we encounter,

  268. whatever struggles

  269. stand before us,

  270. keep our faith

  271. in the Lord,

  272. that He will deliver us

  273. through those times.

  274. He will deliver us

  275. through those circumstances

  276. and He will use

  277. those circumstances

  278. to bring glory

  279. and honor to Him.

  280. Sometimes God uses

  281. those circumstances

  282. in our lives

  283. to help us

  284. to grow in our faith

  285. or to bring us

  286. in a nearer

  287. relationship with Him.

  288. Do you remember Paul

  289. in the New Testament?

  290. And he had a thorn

  291. in the flesh.

  292. What was the purpose

  293. of that?

  294. Why did God

  295. allow that

  296. into his life?

  297. It was because

  298. he was getting

  299. puffed up with pride.

  300. He had experienced

  301. things that no one

  302. else had experienced

  303. in his relationship

  304. with God.

  305. And God was using him

  306. in mighty

  307. and miraculous ways

  308. and he was in danger

  309. of being puffed up

  310. with pride

  311. and arrogance

  312. and so God

  313. brought a thorn

  314. into his flesh

  315. that we're not sure

  316. what exactly

  317. what it was

  318. but we do know

  319. that he used it

  320. to humble Paul

  321. bringing back

  322. to his knees

  323. and back into

  324. that relationship

  325. with him.

  326. Sometimes God

  327. allows those things

  328. to happen in our lives.

  329. You know after we

  330. receive Jesus Christ

  331. as our Lord

  332. and our Savior

  333. sometimes we think

  334. that's the end

  335. and we just sit back

  336. and we wait now

  337. for God to come

  338. and take us to heaven

  339. right?

  340. But what is God's

  341. purpose for our lives

  342. once we've received

  343. Jesus as our Lord

  344. and Savior?

  345. The one thing

  346. that he desires

  347. to do in every one

  348. of our lives

  349. is to mold us

  350. and shape us

  351. into the image

  352. of Jesus Christ.

  353. The Holy Spirit

  354. comes to live

  355. within us

  356. and he begins

  357. working

  358. and molding

  359. and shaping us

  360. to become

  361. in the image

  362. of Christ.

  363. And if it takes

  364. difficulties,

  365. if it takes

  366. hardships,

  367. if it takes

  368. struggles,

  369. he will not

  370. hesitate to put us

  371. through those things

  372. because his ultimate

  373. goal is not

  374. our happiness

  375. but his ultimate

  376. goal is us

  377. being in the image

  378. of Jesus Christ.

  379. And sometimes

  380. some of us

  381. are hard-headed

  382. and stubborn

  383. and wayward

  384. and sometimes

  385. God has to use

  386. those things

  387. to humble us

  388. and to bring us

  389. to a point

  390. where we're

  391. depending on him,

  392. leaning on him

  393. and surrendering

  394. to areas

  395. in our lives

  396. where he's

  397. trying to mold

  398. and shape us

  399. into the image

  400. of Christ.

  401. But what struggles

  402. are you facing

  403. today?

  404. What challenges

  405. have you endured

  406. recently

  407. that you do not

  408. believe God

  409. can handle?

  410. Is there anything

  411. in your life

  412. that's too big

  413. for God?

  414. you know,

  415. Romans 8.28

  416. tells us

  417. that all things

  418. work for the good

  419. of those who

  420. love the Lord.

  421. It doesn't say

  422. God caused

  423. everything,

  424. but it says

  425. God is working

  426. in every situation

  427. and every circumstance

  428. bringing about

  429. the good

  430. of those who

  431. love the Lord.

  432. Also,

  433. Luke 1.37

  434. says,

  435. for nothing

  436. is impossible

  437. with God.

  438. what challenges,

  439. what struggles,

  440. what hardships

  441. then are you

  442. facing or will

  443. you face in your

  444. life that is

  445. greater than

  446. God's ability

  447. to handle?

  448. I know of none.

  449. I know at times

  450. the Lord may bring

  451. us to the edge

  452. where we think

  453. we cannot handle

  454. another thing,

  455. but we have to

  456. look back at the

  457. times in our lives

  458. where God has

  459. already brought us

  460. through and be

  461. reminded of the

  462. things that God

  463. has done in our

  464. lives and look

  465. back and see how

  466. He has been

  467. working in our

  468. lives and bringing

  469. us to where we

  470. are even now and

  471. trust and have

  472. faith that despite

  473. our understanding

  474. that God is still

  475. working in those

  476. situations and

  477. circumstances in our

  478. lives, helping us

  479. to grow in our

  480. faith, grow in our

  481. character, grow in

  482. our endurance, even

  483. preparing us maybe

  484. for future works

  485. that He would have

  486. us to do and

  487. ultimately He's

  488. working to bring

  489. glory and honor

  490. among Himself.

  491. You know, Israel

  492. had been led into

  493. the promised land

  494. by Joshua back in

  495. Deuteronomy and

  496. God had clearly

  497. instructed them in

  498. Deuteronomy 28 that

  499. if they were faithful

  500. and they were

  501. obedient to His

  502. commands, He would

  503. always bless them.

  504. But that wasn't the

  505. full message, was it?

  506. What else did He go

  507. on to tell them?

  508. He said that if you

  509. fail to be obedient,

  510. if you fail to be

  511. faithful, then what?

  512. He said, I will curse

  513. you.

  514. Unfortunately, the

  515. northern kingdom forgot

  516. that second part of

  517. that message.

  518. Really, they forgot

  519. the first part as

  520. well.

  521. And they had moved

  522. far away from being

  523. faithful and obedient

  524. to the Lord.

  525. They had abandoned

  526. the faith of the

  527. God of Abraham

  528. and the God of

  529. Moses who had led

  530. them out of Egypt.

  531. And they had begun

  532. to worship other

  533. gods and they had

  534. become, you know,

  535. trying to be more

  536. like the nations

  537. around them and

  538. worshiping the gods

  539. that the nations

  540. around them had,

  541. were worshiping.

  542. And as a loving

  543. God will, God didn't

  544. just punish them

  545. immediately.

  546. What did He do?

  547. He sent prophets.

  548. He sent the prophets

  549. to them with words

  550. of warning and

  551. message for them to

  552. return to being

  553. faithful to the God

  554. of Abraham, the one

  555. true and only God,

  556. to return to being

  557. faithful and obedient

  558. to the covenant that

  559. God had made with

  560. them and He would

  561. bless them once again.

  562. But the Jews were

  563. very hard-headed and

  564. stubborn and they

  565. refused to listen to

  566. the prophets.

  567. The northern kingdom

  568. had gotten so wicked

  569. and so vile that they

  570. did something that we

  571. can't even begin to

  572. imagine today.

  573. And that was they

  574. were, they got into

  575. child sacrifices.

  576. They would take their

  577. own children and burn

  578. them on altars to

  579. false gods.

  580. And so God raised up

  581. the Assyrian nation

  582. and He led them to

  583. conquer the northern

  584. kingdom of Israel.

  585. Look at chapter 17

  586. verses 3 through 8.

  587. Salmanazar, king of

  588. Assyria, came up to

  589. attack Hoswe who had

  590. been Salmanazar's

  591. vassal and had paid

  592. him tribute.

  593. But the king of Assyria

  594. discovered that Hoswe was

  595. a traitor for he had

  596. sent envoys to

  597. Saul, king of Egypt,

  598. and he no longer paid

  599. tribute to the king of

  600. Assyria as he had done

  601. year by year.

  602. Therefore Salmanazar seized

  603. him and put him in

  604. prison.

  605. The king of Assyria

  606. invaded the entire land,

  607. marched against Samaria

  608. and laid siege to it for

  609. three years.

  610. In the ninth year of

  611. Hoswe, the king of Assyria

  612. captured Samaria and

  613. deported the Israelites

  614. to Assyria.

  615. He settled them in

  616. Halah, in Gozan, on the

  617. harbor river, and in the

  618. towns of the Medes.

  619. All this took place

  620. because the Israelites

  621. had sinned against the

  622. Lord their God who had

  623. brought them up out of

  624. Egypt from under the

  625. power of Pharaoh, king

  626. of Egypt.

  627. They worshipped other

  628. gods and followed the

  629. practices of the nations

  630. the Lord had driven out

  631. before them as well as

  632. the practices that the

  633. kings of Israel had

  634. introduced.

  635. You know, the northern

  636. kingdom had forgotten

  637. the covenant that God

  638. had made with them and

  639. as a result, God punished

  640. them and destroyed them.

  641. And during this same

  642. time frame, king Hezekiah,

  643. king of Judah, the

  644. southern kingdom.

  645. You know, Hezekiah's

  646. father was a very evil

  647. king and he did many

  648. wrong things in the eyes

  649. of the Lord.

  650. And yet Hezekiah was not

  651. like his father.

  652. The scriptures tell us

  653. that there were no other

  654. kings from the time of

  655. David on that were like

  656. Hezekiah.

  657. He honored God and

  658. actually tore down the

  659. Asherah poles and the

  660. places of false worship

  661. throughout the land.

  662. He did everything within

  663. his power as king to lead

  664. his nation back to

  665. honoring, you know, the

  666. one true God and to

  667. being faithful to him.

  668. And as a result, God

  669. honored him and God

  670. blessed him and he was

  671. successful in all that

  672. he did.

  673. It was his faith in the

  674. Lord that led him then

  675. to quit paying, you know,

  676. tribute to the king of

  677. Assyria.

  678. He trusted in the Lord and

  679. he refused to pay that

  680. price anymore.

  681. However, when he failed to

  682. pay the price the Assyrians

  683. had set before him, then the

  684. Assyrians invaded back in to

  685. Judah, conquered all the

  686. fortified cities and now

  687. have besieged Jerusalem.

  688. You know, this reminds us

  689. that our faith at times cost

  690. us something.

  691. At times, our faith in the

  692. Lord comes at a price.

  693. And I mention that because so

  694. often we take a stand for the

  695. Lord and we think, well,

  696. everything should be perfect,

  697. well, and good, and yet we

  698. run into even greater

  699. difficulties.

  700. We're at war.

  701. We're in a spiritual battle.

  702. I believe right now the

  703. United States is in a

  704. spiritual battle for the soul

  705. of this nation.

  706. And there will be times when

  707. we take a stand for God that

  708. we may suffer consequences of

  709. that.

  710. But we do it in justice to

  711. ourselves as well as others

  712. when we say that if I accept

  713. Christ and I do what he tells

  714. me to do, I'll never have any

  715. problems in life.

  716. It'll be a walk in the park and

  717. everything will be well and

  718. good.

  719. And those of you that have been

  720. Christians for any length of

  721. time at all know that's not

  722. true.

  723. We will face challenges.

  724. We will face difficulties.

  725. We will face hardships.

  726. But our faith in God is not

  727. that if we follow him, he'll

  728. handle everything and we'll

  729. never have a struggle in our

  730. life, is it?

  731. So what is our faith supposed

  732. to be in?

  733. Our faith should be that when

  734. we give our life to the Lord,

  735. we put our life in his hands

  736. and we trust him to take our

  737. life and do with us what he

  738. will to bring glory and honor

  739. to his name, to bring about

  740. his will and to advance the

  741. kingdom.

  742. And sometimes that may be

  743. going through difficulties.

  744. Sometimes that may be

  745. hardships.

  746. I personally think the world

  747. needs to see that we're

  748. willing to worship God, Jesus

  749. Christ, if he doesn't do

  750. anything for us.

  751. We don't need to be like the

  752. people of the New Testament who

  753. follow Jesus around just because

  754. he fed the hungry or raised, you

  755. know, the dead or healed the

  756. sick, many of them follow just

  757. to see what he would do for

  758. them.

  759. We need to follow Christ because

  760. of what he's already done for

  761. us upon the cross and for that

  762. and that alone.

  763. If he never does another thing in

  764. my life and I live a miserable,

  765. wretched life due to hardships,

  766. not due to sin, but due to just

  767. struggles I face, then praise be to

  768. the Lord Jesus Christ because of

  769. what he's already done for me.

  770. Oftentimes I hear people say we're

  771. in the safest place when we're in

  772. the center of God's will.

  773. I want to share with you today

  774. that's not true.

  775. Ask Jesus.

  776. Was Jesus in the center of God's

  777. will when he went to the cross?

  778. That wasn't the safe place.

  779. Ask many of our missionaries who

  780. serve in dangerous places today.

  781. Ask many believers.

  782. I was reading a story in Voice of

  783. the Martyrs just the other day

  784. where they wouldn't say somewhere

  785. in Asia.

  786. Believers have to have church in

  787. their cars and they have to drive

  788. around while they do a church

  789. service, which you can see there's

  790. only going to be two, three, four of

  791. them in a car.

  792. But that's the only place that they

  793. can meet that they don't fear being

  794. heard or, you know, people coming in

  795. and killing them for their faith.

  796. A few years back, my wife and my

  797. daughter Ashley were looking at going

  798. to Honduras.

  799. And Ashley was only 12 at the time.

  800. And they were set to leave at something

  801. like 3 o'clock in the morning.

  802. Well, at 9 o'clock that night, the team

  803. leader calls me and he says, we need to

  804. have a meeting at the church in an hour.

  805. So I said, okay.

  806. And I went up there with my wife and

  807. daughter.

  808. They said, Honduras has had a coup and

  809. they've run the president out of the

  810. country and there's rioting, you know,

  811. and conflict and we don't know whether

  812. we should go or not.

  813. And I was thinking there were several

  814. teenagers going on that trip and I

  815. thought there's no way parents are

  816. going to let their teenagers go on a

  817. trip like that to a third world country

  818. who is experiencing a coup and having

  819. rioting and fighting going on.

  820. But when I got up there to my great

  821. surprise, you know, all of them were

  822. like, oh, let's go.

  823. You can send my kids.

  824. You're in the safest place when you're

  825. in the center of God's will.

  826. And I said, that is not true.

  827. I said, it is not true at all.

  828. And they're like, well, you're just

  829. afraid to let your wife and daughter go.

  830. I said, I'm letting them make that

  831. decision and I will let them do what

  832. they feel the Lord leads them to do.

  833. But I also shared with them what you

  834. have to do is if you feel God's leading

  835. you to go, then go.

  836. Put your life in God's hands and trust

  837. that whatever happens, whether you live

  838. or die, whether you're attacked, put in

  839. jail or you suffer, you're in God's hands

  840. and you're trusting that he's using those

  841. circumstances to fulfill his will and to

  842. bring glory and honor unto himself.

  843. You know, mission teams, we need to

  844. understand that.

  845. When you go on a mission trip, there's

  846. no guarantee that something bad won't

  847. happen.

  848. And I mention that because the first time

  849. it does go wrong, I don't want to

  850. stand in back going, well, we trusted

  851. God.

  852. Why did God allow that to happen?

  853. Sometimes God uses circumstances and

  854. situations like that to accomplish his

  855. will.

  856. We don't understand.

  857. We may not even like it.

  858. But when we go, whether it's on a

  859. mission trip or across the street, we put

  860. our life in God's hands and we trust

  861. God.

  862. We trust that he will use us to fulfill

  863. his will and his purposes in our life.

  864. We trust that he's using our lives and

  865. the situations and the circumstances that

  866. we find ourselves in to bring glory unto

  867. himself and to advance the kingdom of

  868. God.

  869. Hezekiah sent a message to the king of

  870. Assyria stating that he had sinned against

  871. him.

  872. And if they would withdraw, then Judah

  873. would pay them the price that they had

  874. asked.

  875. This is the one little blemish on Hezekiah's

  876. record here is that he stepped back and

  877. instead of having complete faith and trust in

  878. the Lord, he agreed to pay the price.

  879. And so he went throughout the land.

  880. He took all the silver and gold he could find,

  881. including that which was in the temple, and he

  882. gave it to the king of Assyria.

  883. However, what happens?

  884. The Assyrian king doesn't do what he said he

  885. would do.

  886. He did not withdraw, but rather he besieged

  887. Jerusalem.

  888. And so Hezekiah finds himself in a very awkward

  889. crisis here with a fundamental question that is

  890. still as true today as it was then.

  891. That question is, what do you believe about God?

  892. Not what you say, but what do you really believe down in your

  893. heart about God?

  894. Is God worthy to be trusted?

  895. Can He really fulfill His promises that He has given us today in His

  896. word?

  897. Do we really believe that?

  898. If Hezekiah trusted in the Lord and the Lord wasn't able to deliver

  899. them, then Judah would have been conquered by the Assyrians and

  900. destroyed.

  901. But Hezekiah, being the man of God that he was, he went to Isaiah, the

  902. prophet, to seek, you know, His word and His advice.

  903. Look over in chapter 19, verses 5 through 7, and we will see the

  904. message here.

  905. When King Hezekiah's officials came to Isaiah, Isaiah said to them,

  906. Tell your master this is what the Lord says.

  907. Do not be afraid of what you have heard, those words with which the

  908. underling of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

  909. Listen, I am going to put a spirit in him that when he hears a certain

  910. report, he will return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down

  911. with the sword.

  912. You know, Isaiah told King Hezekiah not to fear the king of Assyria because

  913. God would send him home and then would have him struck down with the sword.

  914. But then Isaiah, he goes to the temple and he cries out unto the Lord on his own,

  915. which is a really, really good example for us to follow.

  916. When we're facing times when we're seeking wisdom, seeking, you know, direction,

  917. facing challenges, it's a good thing to go to spiritual leaders or spiritually mature

  918. individuals that we trust and go to them asking them for advice, even praying with them.

  919. But then go directly to God ourselves.

  920. Don't necessarily just take the word of others, but learn to go to God ourselves and seek God's

  921. direction and seek God's wisdom in our own life.

  922. Well, the Lord heard Hezekiah's prayer and he responded once again through Isaiah.

  923. Flip over again, chapter 19, look down at verse 32 through 36.

  924. Therefore, this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria.

  925. He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here.

  926. He will not come before it was shield or build a siege ramp against it.

  927. By the way that He came, He will return.

  928. He will not enter this city, declares the Lord.

  929. I will defend this city and save it for my sake and for the sake of David, my servant.

  930. That night, the angel of the Lord went out and put to death 185,000 men in the Assyrian

  931. camp.

  932. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies.

  933. So Sennacherib, king of Assyria, broke camp and withdrew.

  934. He returned to Nineveh and he stayed there.

  935. You know, until recently, it wasn't believed by non-Christians that Nineveh even existed.

  936. You know, there were archaeologists and others who doubted the stories of the Bible and that

  937. Nineveh even existed.

  938. But recently, and I think this is amazing, the more scientists and the more archaeologists

  939. discover, the more they prove the Word of God to be true.

  940. And it hasn't been long ago that they found evidence that Nineveh really did exist.

  941. Now, I couldn't find it, but Jim Gilstrap told me when he was in seminary that his professors

  942. shared with them that, you know, in the archaeological finds of Nineveh that they had recordings

  943. of the Assyrian army losing 185,000 soldiers in one night.

  944. How is that possible, certainly in that day and time, other than the Lord?

  945. The Lord certainly delivered them in a manner that no one could have even imagined, that no

  946. one else could have done it in the way God did it.

  947. And God often does that in our lives.

  948. Why?

  949. He does it so that He receives the glory, doesn't He?

  950. He receives the praise.

  951. Not Judah.

  952. You know, Judah didn't go out and fight a battle.

  953. The battle was won without even one single arrow being shot in that day and time.

  954. You know, no one has ever lived without having problems or crisis to arise in their life.

  955. We see throughout scriptures men, good, faithful men like Hezekiah facing great challenges.

  956. It can be hard for us to understand why God allows these things to take place in our lives.

  957. It can be hard to understand, especially in the midst of them, why God allows them to happen.

  958. But as we look back, especially once we've gotten through a struggle or a hardship or a difficulty,

  959. and we look back, I hope we can see the hand of God that was always there, always in the midst of that struggle,

  960. always in the midst of that difficulty, right there alongside of us.

  961. You know, we may not always be protected from difficulties and hardships,

  962. but God has said He will never leave us nor forsake us,

  963. that He will be there with us in the midst of all of those.

  964. As we stand here on the very last day of the year 2017,

  965. and we look back,

  966. you remember challenges or struggles that you faced throughout the year?

  967. Can you look back now

  968. and see how God's hand was in the midst of that all along?

  969. You might not have been able to see it in the moment,

  970. but maybe now that we've come through that,

  971. we can see it.

  972. You may be in a challenge or a struggle or a difficulty, hardship right now,

  973. and you may not be able to see the hand of God.

  974. But wait until we get out of it and look back.

  975. We will be able to see it.

  976. And so, if you're in the midst of that right now,

  977. just hold on to God.

  978. Have faith and trust in Him.

  979. And accept His answer.

  980. Accept how He's working in your life

  981. to bring about His purposes,

  982. to bring about His will,

  983. to bring about the advance of the kingdom of God.

  984. And I hope that as we look back on 2017,

  985. and we can see the hand of God in our lives.

  986. Maybe we didn't go through any struggles.

  987. Maybe we had a great year,

  988. and it was all happiness and bliss.

  989. But I hope we see the hand of God in that as well.

  990. And as we face a new year,

  991. 2018,

  992. may it not strike fear in our hearts

  993. to face a new year,

  994. because we don't know what this new year will hold for us.

  995. May we go into that new year

  996. holding the hand of God,

  997. allowing Him to hold us completely in His arms if necessary.

  998. But go forward in faith.

  999. Go forward in trust.

  1000. Go forward in belief

1001. that God is going to be with us in those moments.

1002. Those difficulties that are beyond our abilities.

1003. He's going to go forward with us.

1004. And that He's going to take our lives.

1005. It may not all be perfect happiness and joy,

1006. but we're going to trust

1007. that God's going to take our lives.

  1008. Excuse me.

1009. He's going to use us

1010. to bring about His purpose, His will,

1011. and to bring glory to His name.

1012. Or He may be working in us,

1013. preparing us for a work

1014. that He still has for us to do.

1015. He may be strengthening our faith,

  1016. strengthening our character,

1017. and helping us to become more and more

1018. like Jesus in our life.

1019. King Hezekiah faced what the world

1020. would say was a hopeless situation.

1021. Some may have said he was crazy

1022. to trust in the Lord,

1023. but he went to God,

1024. heard the word of the Lord,

1025. trusted the Lord would see him through,

1026. and was willing to accept the consequences

  1027. if he didn't,

1028. but he trusted and believed that he would,

  1029. and God did.

1030. God did exactly what He said He would do.

1031. As we go into 2018,

1032. not only do we trust that God will use us

1033. and be there with us,

1034. but we can trust His word.

1035. We can know that He is faithful

1036. and that He will be faithful to the word of God,

1037. and so may we not only be a people of faith,

1038. but may we also go into 2018

1039. striving to walk closer to the Lord

1040. this year than we've ever been.

1041. Maybe we strive to know His word better

1042. than we've ever known it before,

  1043. and to obey it,

1044. and to apply it to our lives.

1045. Let's go to the Lord in prayer.

1046. Father, we just thank You so much

  1047. for Your word.

1048. We thank You for examples throughout Scripture

  1049. like King Hezekiah,

1050. that He shows us an example of a man

  1051. trusting in You,

1052. and You honoring that faith and that trust

1053. and delivering him and Judah

1054. from an army that was far superior to them.

1055. And I pray that as we enter into 2018,

1056. I pray that we can have faith and trust in You,

1057. but that we will also be an honorable people

  1058. who obey Your word,

  1059. who study Your word,

1060. and apply Your word to our lives,

1061. and that You will use us

  1062. throughout our families,

  1063. throughout our community,

1064. throughout our state and beyond,

1065. to allow the light of Christ

  1066. to shine through us

1067. and others to see You

1068. and come to know You

1069. as their Lord and Savior as well.

1070. And it's in Your holy name we pray.

  1071. Amen.
