  1. Good job. Thank you very much.

  2. I really do enjoy this service, the recognition of graduates every year.

  3. I think it's important that we as your church family celebrate this with you, honor you in this way.

  4. One of my goals for this service every year is to preach a message that has some type of special application to graduates.

  5. Well, this year, this message, it's going to accomplish that goal because it speaks to every Christian.

  6. If you are a Christian, then what I'm going to be talking about today, what we're going to be looking at in Galatians 5,

  7. it applies to every single one of us equally.

  8. It's talking about something, if you are a Christian, you're very familiar with,

  9. an internal battle, an internal struggle between a force that entices us to sin

  10. and between the Spirit of God that so works in us, calling us to live a life that pleases God.

  11. Galatians 5, beginning in verse 16, Paul is contrasting two types of what we could call character qualities or even lifestyles.

  12. One will describe what we could call character qualities or actions.

  13. One will describe what's going on.

  14. One or the other will describe what's going on in our lives right now in terms of our attitudes or actions,

  15. at least to some degree.

  16. Now, when you see which list best describes how you are living,

  17. you will discover that at this moment,

  18. what the most powerful influence in your life is.

  19. What we're going to see this morning,

  20. some of the characteristics of people who live according to the desires of their sinful nature,

  21. some of the outworkings of the Spirit of God in a person's life.

  22. If we look at these two ways of thinking and living,

  23. whichever list most identifies you,

  24. that's going to show you

  25. what is actually the most powerful influence in your life right now,

  26. right this minute.

  27. Let's read Galatians chapter 5, beginning in verse 16,

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  28. but our focus this morning will be verses 19 through 25.

  29. Let's read it.

  30. Paul is writing to churches in a region called Galatia.

  31. He says,

  32. But I say,

  33. Walk by the Spirit,

  34. and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

  35. Walk by the Spirit,

  36. and you will not gratify the desires of your sinful nature.

  37. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit,

  38. and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.

  39. For these are opposed to each other to keep you from doing the thing you want to do.

  40. But if you're led by the Spirit,

  41. you're not under the law.

  42. Now, the works of the flesh are evident.

  43. Sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,

  44. idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy,

  45. fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy,

  46. drunkenness, orgy, and things like these.

  47. I warn you,

  48. as I warned you before,

  49. that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  50. But the fruit of the Spirit,

  51. the opposite way to live.

  52. The fruit of the Spirit is love,

  53. joy, peace, patience, kindness,

  54. goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

  55. Against such things, there is no law.

  56. And those who belong to Christ Jesus

  57. have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

  58. If we live by the Spirit,

  59. let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

  60. We're in a series from Galatians chapter 5,

    Galatians 5:16

  61. verses 16 through chapter 6,

  62. about verse 5, maybe through verse 10.

  63. We'll see how it works out next week.

  64. The series is entitled,

  65. The Holy Spirit The.

  66. Notice that, all capitals, T-H-E, underlined.

  67. The Holy Spirit The Key

  68. to living a faithful Christian life.

  69. Last week, we looked at verses 16 through 18

  70. and saw how we must depend on the Holy Spirit's power.

  71. Well, today,

  72. we're looking at verses 19 through 25,

  73. and we're going to see how we must make

  74. the Holy Spirit the dominant influence

  75. in our lives.

  76. There is a dominant influence over your life right now.

  77. It's either your old sinful nature

  78. or it's the Spirit of God if you're a Christian.

  79. Let's begin by, with a question.

  80. What is the dominant influence in your life right now?

  81. What is the strongest, most powerful influence,

  82. force, power in your life right now?

  83. If you're a Christian,

  84. it's either your sinful nature,

  85. what Paul calls the flesh,

  86. or the Spirit of God.

  87. As we go through these verses,

  88. we're going to look at both, both.

  89. I want you to be honest

  90. about what is influencing you the most right now.

  91. Let's look at number one.

  92. If our sinful nature is the most powerful influence

  93. in our life, then some of the things

  94. found in verses 19 through 21

  95. will be present in us.

  96. Now, we're going to look at some things

  97. that are outrageous sins, some of them.

  98. What I want you to do is think,

  99. this list,

  100. you may not be doing this publicly,

  101. but you could be doing it privately.

  102. You may not be doing some of these things,

  103. actually acting on them,

  104. but you're thinking it.

  105. The thought is there,

  106. the desire is there,

  107. maybe just the opportunity

  108. just hasn't arisen yet.

  109. So don't just think,

  110. this doesn't describe what I'm doing.

  111. Does this describe what you want to do?

  112. Does this describe some of your desires?

  113. Let's look.

  114. First,

  115. I'm going to categorize these.

  116. A lot of commentators,

  117. they put these under some,

  118. I like four headings,

  119. and I think that helps us to look at it better.

  120. So let's do that.

  121. Look at the first one,

  122. sexual sins.

  123. Verse 19.

  124. Look at those words there.

  125. Sexual immorality, impurity.

  126. Sensuality.

  127. You know,

  128. sex is one of God's good gifts,

  129. and I want to say at the outset,

  130. Paul is not talking about

  131. sex in any kind of negative way.

  132. God made us to be sexual beings

  133. with sexual needs,

  134. and he designed that those needs

  135. be met in a pure and honorable

  136. and good way in marriage,

  137. in the institution of marriage.

  138. But we all know

  139. the good gift of sex

  140. is often abused,

  141. and that's what Paul's talking about here.

  142. Sexual immorality is a broad term

  143. covering all kinds of sexual sins.

  144. He's referring to things like

  145. premarital sex,

  146. adultery,

  147. homosexuality.

  148. He's referring to you being involved

  149. in pornography.

  150. One of the great

  151. under the radar,

  152. what we think,

  153. hidden sins of today.

  154. But I want you to think,

  155. sexual immorality is not limited

  156. to just physical acts.

  157. Jesus talks about how

  158. lusting for someone

  159. is the same as committing adultery

  160. with them in your heart.

  161. So sexual immorality

  162. can just take place in your mind,

  163. just your thought life,

  164. your desires.

  165. It can take place both

  166. in our public world

  167. and our private world.

  168. Here's something we all need to remember.

  169. When it comes to God,

  170. there is no private world.

  171. I've got a private world from you

  172. and you've got a private world from me.

  173. But nobody,

  174. no one,

  175. has a private world

  176. where God is not there.

  177. And we need to always keep that in mind.

  178. The word impurity literally means uncleanness.

  179. It's describing either

  180. some kind of perverse behavior

  181. or it could be describing

  182. how sexual impurity

  183. defiles and corrupts a person

  184. which separates us from God.

  185. Sensuality,

  186. the next one,

  187. this is sexual sin

  188. without limits or restraint.

  189. William Barclay

  190. describes it like this.

  191. A love of sin

  192. so reckless

  193. and so audacious

  194. that a man has ceased to care

  195. what God

  196. or man

  197. thinks

  198. of his actions.

  199. I want us to understand something.

  200. Sometimes we can all say,

  201. I don't care

  202. what other people think.

  203. And sometimes we say that in a way

  204. that's okay,

  205. that's positive.

  206. You know,

  207. we're not going to go with the flow.

  208. We don't care

  209. if somebody criticizes us.

  210. We're going to do

  211. what we think is the right thing.

  212. So in that way,

  213. we don't care

  214. what people think.

  215. But we need to all be careful

  216. that we never develop

  217. the attitude,

  218. I don't give a rip

  219. what anybody thinks,

  220. including God.

  221. That's a dangerous place to be.

  222. It's a place of

  223. doing things that

  224. deep down,

  225. if we'll admit it,

  226. we are ashamed

  227. and we don't want to be held

  228. accountable for.

  229. What we're going to do this morning

  230. is not do an in-depth study

  231. of these sins

  232. of the sinful nature.

  233. We're looking at sort of

  234. the whole thing

  235. in a nutshell this morning

  236. and going to compare it

  237. with the fruit of the Spirit.

  238. So let's move on in this.

  239. The next group

  240. is religious sins,

  241. verse 20.

  242. Everyone worships something.

  243. God made us that way.

  244. God made us in such a way

  245. that we would want

  246. to worship Him.

  247. That was the original design.

  248. But when sin entered the world,

  249. everything got messed up.

  250. Everything is flawed,

  251. including

  252. what we worship sometimes.

  253. Idolatry

  254. can be defined as

  255. worship of the creature

  256. rather than the creator.

  257. Idolatry is when we worship

  258. maybe even a good gift of God

  259. in place of God,

  260. the giver.

  261. Anything that takes God's place

  262. in our life can be an idol.

  263. If you are worshiping a person,

  264. if you're worshiping money,

  265. if you're worshiping power,

  266. if you're worshiping education,

  267. you're an idolater

  268. according to Scripture.

  269. Anything that takes God's place

  270. in our life has become an idol,

  271. which makes us guilty of idolatry.

  272. Sorcery.

  273. That's sort of strange

  274. turning up in this passage,

  275. but

  276. it refers to any kind of involvement

  277. with the powers of evil,

  278. and it's used in the New Testament

  279. sometimes to refer to

  280. someone's involvement

  281. with the occult.

  282. Now, the word actually comes

  283. from a Greek word,

  284. pharmakon,

  285. which literally means drugs,

  286. where our word pharmacy comes from.

  287. And in New Testament times,

  288. this word was sometimes used

  289. to describe drugs

  290. that induced abortion.

  291. Sometimes it's a part

  292. of an occult practice.

  293. So that's what he's talking about there.

  294. Various kinds of unacceptable worship.

  295. The third category is social sins.

  296. Verses 20 and 21.

  297. The things on this list

  298. revealed our flawed personal character

  299. and our failure in relationships.

  300. I want you to look at that.

  301. Verses 20 and first part of verse 21.

  302. These words don't need

  303. a whole lot of explanation.

  304. He's talking about

  305. how our sinful nature

  306. so works in us

  307. that we're prideful,

  308. we are divisive,

  309. we don't get along with people.

  310. Just look at this list.

  311. Enmity, that means hatred,

  312. strife, jealousy,

  313. fits of anger,

  314. rivalries.

  315. Some translations say

  316. selfish ambition,

  317. dissensions,

  318. divisions,

  319. envy.

  320. You see what he's talking about?

  321. Paul is talking about how

  322. our sinful nature

  323. so works in us

  324. to tempt us

  325. to be sexually impure

  326. in some way.

  327. Sometimes.

  328. Not all time,

  329. but sometimes.

  330. And some people

  331. more than others.

  332. Our sinful nature

  333. provokes us

  334. to place too much emphasis

  335. on another person

  336. or a thing

  337. in place of God.

  338. Our sinful,

  339. selfish attitudes,

  340. desires,

  341. sometimes tempt us

  342. just to not be,

  343. not try to get along

  344. with someone.

  345. Just be content,

  346. or just be obsessed

  347. obsessed with our way

  348. and get angry

  349. and lash out at people

  350. when we don't get our way.

  351. The fourth category

  352. is alcohol-related sins.

  353. Drunkenness,

  354. you know what that is.

  355. But the word

  356. that's next,

  357. orgies.

  358. You think,

  359. where in the world

  360. does that come from

  361. in this list?

  362. It can be translated

  363. carousing.

  364. It can just be

  365. referring to something

  366. like what you would call

  367. wild parties.

  368. This word is used

  369. three times

  370. in the New Testament,

  371. and each time

  372. it's linked

  373. to the sin

  374. of drunkenness.

  375. That's why it's here.

  376. It's not really

  377. out of place.

  378. He's talking about

  379. not just somebody

  380. who gets drunk,

  381. but somebody

  382. who just goes wild

  383. in their drinking

  384. and drunkenness.

  385. You know,

  386. our nation's

  387. number one

  388. drug problem

  389. today is

  390. alcohol abuse.

  391. it's the most

  392. problem drug

  393. among all ages,

  394. but it's certainly

  395. the most problem drug

  396. among young people,

  397. and you know,

  398. you got,

  399. you know friends

  400. in high school

  401. and college

  402. who've already got

  403. a problem with alcohol.

  404. They've abused it

  405. to the point

  406. that they're drunk

  407. more times

  408. than not

  409. on a weekend.

  410. Problem

  411. that I want to sort of

  412. focus on for a moment

  413. here is

  414. it's the number one

  415. drug problem

  416. alcohol abuse is

  417. in our country,

  418. yet it is glorified

  419. by the entertainment

  420. and advertising industries

  421. as if it is the key

  422. to having a good time.

  423. You see it in,

  424. you know,

  425. commercials,

  426. advertisements,

  427. you see it in all kinds

  428. of TV shows and movies,

  429. that if you really want

  430. to have a good time,

  431. you got to drink.

  432. And a lot of times,

  433. the more you drink,

  434. the better your time is,

  435. the more relaxed you are,

  436. the more loose you are,

  437. the more open

  438. and free you are.

  439. I want to be clear.

  440. I have never seen anyone

  441. where alcohol

  442. made them a better person.

  443. Now, if you have,

  444. I want you to tell me.

  445. I want to know that.

  446. I have never in my life

  447. seen anyone

  448. who really liked to drink,

  449. who made it a priority

  450. in their life

  451. and it made them

  452. a better husband

  453. or father

  454. or mother

  455. or daughter

  456. or anything.

  457. But I have seen

  458. how alcohol

  459. has ruined

  460. people's lives.

  461. I mean,

  462. I've seen it

  463. close,

  464. very much

  465. in my face,

  466. in my family,

  467. among people

  468. that I know

  469. and love

  470. where alcohol

  471. has ruined

  472. their life,

  473. destroyed

  474. their life,

  475. their home,

  476. their family,

  477. lost their career.

  478. And I want us

  479. to be aware of that.

  480. I want you to be aware

  481. of that today

  482. as a young person

  483. at any age.

  484. Let it sink in.

  485. Alcohol is the number one

  486. abused drug

  487. in this country.

  488. Alcohol will not help you

  489. to be better

  490. in any way.

  491. but it can,

  492. it very well

  493. could hurt you

  494. and the people

  495. in your life

  496. that you don't want

  497. to hurt

  498. if you're not

  499. very, very careful.

  500. Now,

  501. look at verse 21.

  502. This list of acts

  503. of the sinful nature

  504. ends with a very

  505. strong,

  506. serious warning.

  507. Look at it.

  508. I warn you.

  509. As I warned you

  510. before,

  511. that those

  512. who do such things

  513. will not

  514. inherit

  515. the kingdom of God.

  516. People whose lives

  517. are characterized

  518. by sexual immorality,

  519. by just,

  520. they're just angry,

  521. mean-spirited,

  522. cause trouble people,

  523. selfish and self-centered,

  524. they worship things

  525. instead of God,

  526. they worship people

  527. instead of God.

  528. Paul is saying

  529. very clearly here

  530. that a person

  531. who lives this way,

  532. we're talking about somebody,

  533. this is their way of life.

  534. This is what they know.

  535. This is how they are.

  536. This is how they're known.

  537. They're not going to heaven

  538. when they die.

  539. Now,

  540. let's be clear.

  541. The most faithful Christian

  542. struggles

  543. with some of these

  544. on a regular basis.

  545. All of us in this room,

  546. the most respected,

  547. the most godly individual

  548. in this room,

  549. you are tempted.

  550. Maybe with something

  551. related to sexual immorality.

  552. Maybe with alcohol.

  553. Maybe you've got

  554. put too much value

  555. on some things

  556. or people,

  557. and God's not first

  558. in your life

  559. truly

  560. on a regular basis.

  561. Maybe you're just

  562. a selfish person.

  563. You're very arrogant.

  564. You're jealous

  565. of everything

  566. that someone has

  567. to have something

  568. more than you

  569. or better than you.

  570. You're tempted this way.

  571. Sometimes you give in

  572. to this.

  573. Sometimes you give in

  574. to it more at home

  575. around your family

  576. and close friends

  577. than you do out in public.

  578. Maybe nobody at church

  579. has ever seen you,

  580. but your family

  581. certainly has seen you.

  582. Show your rear end

  583. because you're giving in

  584. the desires

  585. of your sinful nature

  586. about getting your way,

  587. about making sure

  588. you get your way

  589. and you force it

  590. on everybody else

  591. in your life.

  592. You say,

  593. we're going to be real

  594. this morning.

  595. We're not going to look

  596. at this passage

  597. and talk about

  598. all those evil people.

  599. We're talking about

  600. how we as Christians

  601. have a sinful nature

  602. and we are tempted.

  603. We have desires

  604. and feelings.

  605. There's things,

  606. emotions

  607. that come out sometimes.

  608. If that's our normal

  609. way of living

  610. and we would say,

  611. I just can't help

  612. but be this way,

  613. that means the Spirit

  614. of God does not live

  615. in you

  616. and that means

  617. you're not a Christian.

  618. You may be a church member,

  619. you may be a baptized

  620. church member,

  621. but you cannot be

  622. a child of God.

  623. You are not going to heaven,

  624. the Word of God says,

  625. if this is you

  626. on a regular basis,

  627. the way you think,

  628. the way you speak,

  629. the way you act,

  630. let's hold that thought down.

  631. Let's go on.

  632. Let's look at the other

  633. source of influence

  634. in this passage,

  635. the Holy Spirit.

  636. If the Spirit of God

  637. is the most powerful

  638. influence in our lives,

  639. we will to some degree

  640. be developing

  641. character qualities

  642. described here

  643. as the fruit of the Spirit.

  644. Look at them.

  645. The fruit of the Spirit

  646. is love, joy, peace,

  647. patience, kindness,

  648. goodness, faithfulness,

  649. gentleness, self-control.

  650. Now, I want you to notice

  651. a difference

  652. in the way Paul describes

  653. these works of the flesh

  654. and the fruit of the Spirit.

  655. Verse 19,

  656. the works of the flesh.

  657. He's talking about

  658. attitudes and actions

  659. that arise

  660. and come from us.

  661. just a part of who we are

  662. as fallen, sinful people.

  663. But verse 22,

  664. he describes

  665. the fruit of the Spirit.

  666. These are attitudes

  667. and actions

  668. that the Spirit of God

  669. produces in

  670. and through us.

  671. We're going to be doing

  672. a study on Wednesday nights

  673. on each

  674. of these qualities

  675. in this list

  676. called the fruit of the Spirit.

  677. Wednesday night,

  678. 6.30,

  679. over in the fellowship hall.

  680. This coming Wednesday night,

  681. we're going to start looking

  682. at the first one

  683. individually,

  684. love.

  685. Now, I want to encourage you

  686. to come and be a part

  687. of this study

  688. of how the Holy Spirit

  689. will work in us

  690. to enable us

  691. to experience

  692. and demonstrate

  693. love and joy and peace

  694. in the midst of difficulty.

  695. When life is hard

  696. and things of that nature.

  697. But right now,

  698. look at the works

  699. of the sinful nature

  700. that we've looked at,

  701. this list,

  702. 19 and 21,

  703. through 21,

  704. and the fruit of the Spirit.

  705. Which list describes

  706. the consistent desire

  707. of your heart

  708. and which is the consistent

  709. pattern of your life?

  710. Think about it.

  711. all Christians,

  712. all of us struggle

  713. with sinful desires

  714. that come from

  715. our sinful nature.

  716. It's an internal war.

  717. It's a battle

  718. that's going on within us.

  719. Paul talked about it

  720. in verse 17

  721. that we looked at last week.

  722. Sometimes we give in

  723. to those desires.

  724. Sometimes,

  725. the most godly

  726. in this room,

  727. give in to those temptations,

  728. those desires,

  729. and you say or do

  730. a sinful thing

  731. that people see

  732. and hear.

  733. It's obvious.

  734. Sometimes we do that

  735. more than we want to admit.

  736. But a true Christian

  737. will not let that be

  738. their normal way of life.

  739. That will not be

  740. their lifestyle,

  741. giving in to the desires

  742. of our sinful nature.

  743. Because Paul said,

  744. if we do,

  745. we will not inherit

  746. the kingdom of God.

  747. So it means a Christian

  748. won't do that.

  749. True children of God

  750. are not at the mercy

  751. of our sinful nature.

  752. If you're a child of God,

  753. the Spirit of God

  754. lives within you

  755. and you do not have

  756. to give in

  757. to the temptations.

  758. You do not have

  759. to act on

  760. those desires

  761. and thoughts

  762. and feelings

  763. that you have

  764. that come from within you

  765. that you know

  766. are wrong.

  767. You do not have

  768. to live a life

  769. that is defined

  770. by sin.

  771. If you're living,

  772. if you're a Christian

  773. and dwell by the Spirit

  774. of God,

  775. you want to obey Him.

  776. You want to do

  777. what's right,

  778. not what's wrong.

  779. You want to please God,

  780. not displease Him.

  781. That's your desire

  782. that comes from

  783. the indwelling Holy Spirit.

  784. Let's look now

  785. at how we can successfully

  786. follow the leadership

  787. of the Holy Spirit

  788. and live that kind of way.

  789. Number two,

  790. how can the Holy Spirit

  791. become the dominant influence

  792. in your life every day?

  793. Well, that's what

  794. verses 24 and 25

  795. tells us.

  796. It's a two-step process.

  797. Number one,

  798. we must say no

  799. to the desires

  800. of our sinful nature.

  801. Look at what he says

  802. in verse 24.

  803. And those who belong

  804. to Christ Jesus

  805. have crucified

  806. the flesh

  807. with its passions

  808. and desires.

  809. Paul uses the imagery

  810. of crucifixion

  811. for an obvious reason.

  812. Jesus was crucified.

  813. He died for our sins.

  814. He uses this imagery

  815. of crucifixion

  816. to describe

  817. the radical break

  818. that we are supposed

  819. to make

  820. when we turn

  821. from our sin,

  822. when we are saved,

  823. when we do put our faith

  824. and trust in Jesus.

  825. He's referring to

  826. what we did at conversion.

  827. We repented of our sin.

  828. We turned from our sin.

  829. We turned away

  830. from everything

  831. that we thought

  832. was selfish

  833. and sinful

  834. and ungodly.

  835. Well, since that time,

  836. since whenever it was

  837. you were saved,

  838. the Lord has continued

  839. to reveal things to you

  840. that are selfish

  841. and sinful

  842. and ungodly.

  843. If you're a Christian

  844. and dwell by the Spirit of God,

  845. as you learn

  846. about those things,

  847. as you learn

  848. what does not please God,

  849. you'll do it.

  850. You'll not give in to it.

  851. When you learn

  852. what does please God,

  853. you'll want to do

  854. what pleases God.

  855. That is the desire

  856. of everyone

  857. who's been born again

  858. by the Spirit of God.

  859. That's the way to test

  860. if you really are a Christian.

  861. Do you love sin

  862. and enjoy it

  863. and have no

  864. real serious

  865. guilt about it?

  866. The Spirit of God

  867. can't be living within you.

  868. But do you really

  869. and truly

  870. hate sin

  871. and you want

  872. to overcome it?

  873. You want to live

  874. a life that pleases God.

  875. You want to honor Him.

  876. You want to be right

  877. with people.

  878. That's a sign

  879. that the Spirit of God

  880. is working within you.

  881. And the second part

  882. of this process

  883. is we must say yes

  884. to the leadership

  885. of the Holy Spirit.

  886. He says,

  887. if we live by the Spirit,

  888. verse 25,

  889. let us also keep step

  890. with the Spirit.

  891. The Holy Spirit leads us

  892. by giving us

  893. the desires

  894. to live a life

  895. that will please God

  896. in mind and heart

  897. and life.

  898. The Holy Spirit works in us

  899. to enable us

  900. to produce

  901. Christ-like character

  902. qualities.

  903. The fruit of the Spirit.

  904. You can live

  905. a faithful Christian life

  906. but you cannot do it

  907. on your own.

  908. You need

  909. that supernatural help

  910. that the Holy Spirit

  911. of God

  912. will give you.

  913. Chuck Swindoll

  914. gives us some good advice

  915. on how we can

  916. do this way,

  917. live this way.

  918. Listen to what he says.

  919. Look at what he says.

  920. He says,

  921. resolve each morning

  922. to walk in the Spirit.

  923. First thing every morning

  924. before you get up,

  925. commit yourself

  926. to His control.

  927. Swindoll is saying,

  928. if you're really serious

  929. about living

  930. a faithful Christian life,

  931. when you wake up

  932. in the morning,

  933. when the clock goes off,

  934. think to yourself,

  935. I really am a child of God.

  936. The Spirit of God

  937. lives within me.

  938. Pray and just ask God,

  939. Lord, help me

  940. to be sensitive

  941. to your Spirit's presence.

  942. Help me to be obedient

  943. to His power.

  944. Help me to watch

  945. what I say.

  946. Not just say

  947. everything I think.

  948. Help me to watch

  949. what I do.

  950. Help me to watch

  951. what my mind dwells on.

  952. And then number two,

  953. strive to maintain

  954. your walk

  955. throughout each day.

  956. Don't turn away

  957. from the Spirit's leading

  958. so you can flirt

  959. with the desires

  960. of the sinful nature.

  961. The Spirit will guide,

  962. protect,

  963. and empower you.

  964. All you must do

  965. is follow Him

  966. by faith.

  967. Begin in the mornings,

  968. committing your life

  969. and you in the fresh

  970. to be sensitive

  971. to the Spirit of God

  972. and obedient

  973. to His leadership.

  974. And throughout the day,

  975. think about that.

  976. Recognize when your sinful nature

  977. is tempting you

  978. and leading,

  979. trying to lead you

  980. in the wrong way.

  981. Learn to say no.

  982. Learn not to say it.

  983. Learn not to do it.

  984. Learn not to look at it.

  985. Learn to do instead

  986. what the Spirit of God

  987. is leading you to do.

  988. That which will

  989. please God.

  990. That which will

  991. make a positive difference

  992. in other people's lives.

  993. That which will

  994. ultimately

  995. please you.

  996. God's Word is clear.

  997. We can live

  998. a faithful,

  999. obedient,

  1000. victorious Christian life

  1001. if

  1002. we will say no

  1003. to our sinful nature

  1004. and yes

  1005. to the leading

  1006. of the Holy Spirit

  1007. every day.

  1008. All day.

  1009. The question is

1010. do you want to do that?

  1011. Will you do that?

  1012. Let's pray together.

  1013. Dear God,

  1014. help us right now

  1015. to know exactly

  1016. how you see us,

  1017. how we really are.

  1018. Father,

  1019. show us

  1020. if we really

  1021. are Christians

  1022. but we're not

  1023. being faithful

  1024. to say no

  1025. to the desires

  1026. of our sinful nature.

  1027. We're not choosing

  1028. on a daily basis

  1029. to be obedient

  1030. to your Spirit's leading.

  1031. We're not choosing

  1032. to please you.

  1033. We're instead

  1034. pleasing ourselves

  1035. more times

  1036. than we like

  1037. to admit.

  1038. If that's the case,

  1039. Father,

  1040. help that person

1041. to admit it to you,

  1042. to confess their sin,

  1043. to truly repent,

  1044. to seek your forgiveness

  1045. and a fresh start

  1046. today

1047. to walk in the Spirit,

  1048. to keep in step

  1049. with the Spirit.

  1050. Father,

  1051. if there are people

  1052. in this room

  1053. who would say

  1054. while they know

  1055. they feel

  1056. the battle

  1057. every day,

  1058. they are making

  1059. progress

  1060. and following

  1061. the leadership

  1062. of the Holy Spirit.

  1063. Dear God,

  1064. affirm them,

  1065. encourage them

  1066. to keep on,

  1067. not let up,

  1068. but to keep on

  1069. relying upon

  1070. the power

  1071. that you provide

  1072. through your

  1073. indwelling Spirit.

  1074. But dear God,

  1075. if there are people

  1076. in this room

  1077. who are not

  1078. indwelled by the Spirit,

  1079. they don't have

  1080. this struggle.

  1081. They just live

  1082. any way they want

  1083. to live

  1084. with relatively

  1085. no guilt.

  1086. Help them to see,

  1087. dear God,

  1088. that if they continue

  1089. that way,

  1090. they will not

  1091. inherit your kingdom.

1092. They'll not go to heaven

  1093. when they die.

  1094. They're not your children.

  1095. But God,

  1096. we pray right now

  1097. that you will create

  1098. within them

  1099. a desire to turn

1100. from this way of life.

  1101. a desire to truly

  1102. trust Jesus

  1103. as their Lord

  1104. and Savior.

  1105. Father,

  1106. help them right now

  1107. to call upon Jesus

  1108. to save them.

  1109. I want everybody

  1110. to continue

1111. in an attitude of prayer.

1112. You listen to the Lord

  1113. and you obey Him.

1114. Do what He's calling you

  1115. to do

1116. in these next few minutes.

  1117. I'd be happy

  1118. to pray with you

  1119. during this time

  1120. if that's what

  1121. you'd like.

1122. You'd like that kind of help.

1123. If you want to talk

  1124. about these things,

1125. I'd be happy to do that now.

1126. I'd be happy to do it

  1127. anytime,

  1128. anywhere.

  1129. But let's make sure

1130. as we leave here today

  1131. we are living

  1132. under the power

1133. of the Spirit of God

  1134. who indwells us

  1135. as a Christian.

  1136. thank you.

  1137. I'm sending you

  1138. to God's Murray

  1139. through the power

1140. of the Holy Spirit of God
