  1. How is life right now?

  2. If you were asked to describe your life right now

  3. and do it in enough detail to fill up one sheet of paper,

  4. what would you say?

  5. What would you talk about your life right now?

  6. Who would you talk about in your life right now?

  7. Well, I would imagine that all of us would describe a mixture

  8. of both positive and negatives

  9. concerning such things as our health,

  10. our feelings,

  11. our relationships with other people,

  12. even our relationship with God.

  13. If we could compile all these papers,

  14. most of what would be written

  15. would describe situations that are less than ideal.

  16. And that's because we live in a less than ideal world.

  17. We live in a fallen world that is far from perfect.

  18. But one day, if you are a Christian,

  19. that's going to change.

  20. We've looked over the past four weeks

  21. at what happens after we die.

  22. Last week we looked

  23. and we saw that one day

  24. the Lord will rescue you

  25. and me if we're Christians

  26. from this broken world.

  27. He's going to take us to a perfect world

  28. where we'll live with Him

  29. and our Heavenly Father

  30. and all other Christians

  31. forever.

  32. We're going to live eternally

  33. in a new heaven

  34. and a new earth.

  35. In that perfect world,

  36. all the beauty that you enjoy

  37. in this world

  38. will be preserved

  39. and even enhanced.

  40. Every Christian relationship

  41. relationship

  42. that has been severed by death,

  43. it'll be restored.

  44. Your relationships

  45. with your Christian family members

  46. who've died,

  47. they'll be refreshed.

  48. They'll be new.

  49. All pain and frustration

  50. and ugliness

  51. will disappear.

  52. All of your deepest

  53. God-honoring desires

  54. will be fulfilled.

  55. God the Father

  56. and our Lord Jesus Christ

  57. will light up

  58. this perfect world

  59. with their glorious presence

  60. and power.

  61. And they'll guarantee

  62. that life will always be perfect

  63. for you and me

  64. because

  65. when we get to heaven,

  66. they will have made us perfect.

  67. And they will have banished

  68. from eternity

  69. all that is not perfect.

  70. You know,

  71. the Bible writers

  72. do their best

  73. to describe for us

  74. what we can look forward to

  75. for all eternity

  76. in heaven.

  77. But words are not really adequate

  78. to describe

  79. what it will be like.

  80. And Paul actually

  81. tells us that.

  82. Look at this

  83. in 1 Corinthians 2.

  84. He says,

  85. No eye has seen,

  86. no ear has heard,

  87. and no mind

  88. has imagined

  89. what God has prepared

  90. for those who love Him.

  91. God has prepared

  92. the best life possible

  93. for us,

  94. His children.

  95. Jesus' death on the cross

  96. for our sins

  97. makes it possible,

  98. and His resurrection

  99. guarantees it.

  100. If you're trusting in Jesus

  101. as your Lord and Savior

  102. right now,

  103. you have a perfect

  104. eternal home

  105. waiting for you.

  106. And that's what we've been

  107. looking at

  108. over the last four weeks.

  109. Well, today,

  110. we're going to shift focuses.

  111. We're going to think today,

  112. or look today,

  113. how we should live

  114. until then.

  115. As Peter instructs us

  116. in his second letter,

  117. the third chapter.

  118. And I want you

  119. to take your Bible

  120. because we're going

  121. to keep it open there.

  122. 2 Peter chapter 3,

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  123. beginning in verse 13.

  124. What's happened

  125. in 2 Peter chapter 3,

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  126. he's been describing

  127. end times.

  128. And he concludes it

  129. by talking about

  130. the new heaven

  131. and new earth.

  132. But what he's actually doing,

  133. beginning in verse 13

  134. and 14,

  135. and then through the end

  136. of this letter,

  137. he's giving us

  138. some instructions

  139. on how we need

  140. to live now

  141. and in anticipation

  142. of living forever

  143. in this new eternal home.

  144. Read with me.

  145. 2 Peter chapter 3,

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  146. beginning in verse 13.

  147. But according to his promise,

  148. we're waiting for

  149. a new heaven

  150. and a new earth

  151. in which righteousness dwells.

  152. Therefore,

  153. in light of that,

  154. in light of what he's

  155. been saying,

  156. therefore,

  157. beloved,

  158. he's talking to Christians.

  159. He makes it clear

  160. at the beginning

  161. of the letter

  162. and throughout the letter

  163. in various ways

  164. like this,

  165. he's calling these people

  166. beloved.

  167. Therefore,

  168. beloved,

  169. since you are waiting

  170. for these,

  171. be diligent

  172. to be found

  173. by him

  174. without spot

  175. or blemish

  176. and at peace.

  177. And count the patience

  178. of our Lord

  179. as salvation,

  180. just as our beloved

  181. brother Paul

  182. also wrote to you

  183. according to the wisdom

  184. given him,

  185. as he does

  186. in all his letters

  187. when he speaks

  188. in them

  189. of these matters.

  190. There are some things

  191. in them

  192. that are hard

  193. to understand.

  194. Now,

  195. I want you to think

  196. as you read

  197. the New Testament,

  198. some of Paul's letters,

  199. you run across things,

  200. you scratch your head

  201. and think,

  202. these are hard

  203. to understand.

  204. Well,

  205. Peter even said

  206. the same thing.

  207. So we're in good company,

  208. which the ignorant

  209. and unstable

  210. twist

  211. to their own destruction

  212. as they do

  213. the other scriptures.

  214. That puts Paul's writings

  215. in the New Testament

  216. on a level

  217. with scripture,

  218. the authority

  219. of scripture.

  220. You,

  221. therefore,

  222. beloved,

  223. knowing this beforehand,

  224. take care

  225. that you are not

  226. carried away

  227. with the error

  228. of lawless people

  229. and lose your own stability,

  230. but grow in the grace

  231. and knowledge

  232. of our Lord Jesus,

  233. of our Lord and Savior

  234. Jesus Christ.

  235. To him be the glory

  236. both now

  237. and to the day

  238. of eternity.

  239. Amen.

  240. Peter is telling us

  241. no matter how good

  242. it's going to be one day,

  243. it matters how we live now.

  244. It matters how you

  245. live your life

  246. every day

  247. in every setting.

  248. It matters to God

  249. how we all live.

  250. What we have here

  251. are some instructions

  252. on how to live

  253. in this world

  254. until Jesus comes for us

  255. either at our death

  256. or at his second coming

  257. if we're alive

  258. at that time.

  259. Let's think in terms

  260. of how we should live

  261. until then.

  262. First,

  263. and we're just going to look

  264. at one thing

  265. this morning.

  266. First,

  267. get serious

  268. about your character.

  269. Believe it or not,

  270. in 2019,

  271. character still counts.

  272. It may not

  273. with a lot of people.

  274. It may not

  275. in certain places

  276. of government.

  277. It may not

  278. in certain centers

  279. of the entertainment world,

  280. even in the sports world.

  281. It may not

  282. in a lot of places,

  283. even where you work.

  284. But before God,

  285. among God's people,

  286. in Christian homes

  287. and churches

  288. and businesses,

  289. wherever we are,

  290. God wants us to know

  291. that character counts.

  292. Our character.

  293. Who we are

  294. deep down.

  295. Who we are

  296. when no one else is looking.

  297. Character counts.

  298. And he's telling us here

  299. in no uncertain terms,

  300. get serious

  301. about your character.

  302. Look at verse 14.

  303. Be diligent

  304. to be found by him

  305. without spot

  306. or blemish

  307. and at peace.

  308. Let's define

  309. what I'm talking about

  310. when I say

  311. Christian character

  312. in this verse.

  313. First,

  314. he says to be

  315. without spot

  316. or blemish.

  317. That may be a phrase

  318. that comes

  319. from the Old Testament

  320. sacrificial system

  321. where God told

  322. the people of Israel

  323. they were to bring

  324. an animal

  325. to be sacrificed

  326. that was without spot

  327. or blemish.

  328. They were to bring

  329. their best to God

  330. not what they didn't want.

  331. Bring their best.

  332. Well,

  333. these words,

  334. the idea of being

  335. without spot

  336. or blemish

  337. are really found

  338. throughout the Bible

  339. to describe

  340. the holy character

  341. that God calls

  342. all of his people

  343. to develop

  344. and then to actually

  345. demonstrate

  346. in the way

  347. that we live.

  348. The point here is

  349. purity matters to God.

  350. Purity matters to God.

  351. Now,

  352. most people

  353. when you think about

  354. use the word purity

  355. they automatically think

  356. sexual purity.

  357. That's okay.

  358. Let's look at it

  359. for a moment.

  360. It's not limited to that

  361. but let's think about it

  362. for a moment.

  363. God calls us today

  364. in our culture

  365. to be pure

  366. in what we think

  367. and in how we live

  368. in the sexual realm.

  369. He wants us to be pure

  370. in our thoughts

  371. and in our actions

  372. and it applies

  373. to both the single

  374. and the married.

  375. Here's something

  376. you're not going to see

  377. anywhere today

  378. or you haven't seen

  379. or heard in a long time

  380. but the Bible

  381. tells us

  382. that God wants

  383. every young person

  384. man,

  385. woman,

  386. older person,

  387. man,

  388. woman

  389. who is single

  390. to abstain

  391. from a sexual

  392. relationship

  393. until you get married.

  394. You don't hear

  395. that much today

  396. do you?

  397. And you certainly

  398. don't see it

  399. lived out

  400. in our culture

  401. on the screen

  402. or in real life.

  403. And most people

  404. today think

  405. it doesn't matter.

  406. That's just,

  407. that is so

  408. way back in history

  409. dark age type

  410. mentality.

  411. Tim Tebow

  412. talks about

  413. about things

  414. like that

  415. and he has

  416. a certain

  417. number of people,

  418. certain group

  419. of people

  420. who like him

  421. but a lot

  422. of people

  423. despise him

  424. and make fun

  425. of such

  426. statements

  427. about remaining

  428. sexually pure

  429. until you get

  430. married.

  431. This also applies

  432. to married people,

  433. remaining faithful

  434. to your spouse

  435. no matter what.

  436. Now,

  437. you think,

  438. you just don't

  439. hear a lot

  440. about purity

  441. today.

  442. Does anyone

  443. really care

  444. about sexual

  445. purity enough

  446. to talk about

  447. it,

  448. to emphasize

  449. it today?

  450. Well,

  451. God does.

  452. And it has

  453. not been removed

  454. from his word.

  455. And if God

  456. thinks purity

  457. matters,

  458. we,

  459. his children,

  460. we should

  461. understand that

  462. it really does

  463. matter.

  464. It should matter

  465. to us.

  466. God cares

  467. about more

  468. than sexual

  469. purity,

  470. though.

  471. He cares

  472. about us

  473. being pure

  474. in our speech,

  475. in the things

  476. we talk about,

  477. in the way

  478. we talk to

  479. people.

  480. He cares

  481. about us

  482. being pure

  483. in our

  484. thought life,

  485. in our

  486. attitudes,

  487. as well as

  488. our conduct.

  489. Now,

  490. look back.

  491. God also

  492. wants us

  493. to be at

  494. peace,

  495. it says.

  496. Now,

  497. it's not

  498. clear whether

  499. this is,

  500. he's talking

  501. about peace

  502. with God,

  503. peace with

  504. other people,

  505. or just

  506. having a

  507. sense of

  508. personal

  509. inner peace.

  510. Well,

  511. we know

  512. that the Bible

  513. talks about

  514. in other

  515. places that

  516. we can

  517. have peace

  518. with God

  519. through a

  520. right relationship

  521. with Jesus.

  522. When we

  523. have peace

  524. with God,

  525. we can

  526. experience the

  527. peace of

  528. God in

  529. our lives,

  530. and when

  531. this is

  532. taking place,

  533. it should

  534. spill over

  535. into our

  536. relationships

  537. with other

  538. people.

  539. So,

  540. when he

  541. talks about

  542. we should

  543. be at

  544. peace,

  545. let's just

  546. think in

  547. terms,

  548. in this

  549. context,

  550. he's talking

  551. about the

  552. character

  553. quality of

  554. peace,

  555. that we

  556. experience it

  557. and we

  558. communicate it

  559. in all of

  560. our relationships.

  561. we are

  562. peaceful

  563. people.

  564. We'll look

  565. at it that

  566. way today.

  567. Now,

  568. there's one

  569. phrase that

  570. we skipped

  571. over at the

  572. beginning of

  573. verse 14 that

  574. I want you to

  575. look at now.

  576. Look at it

  577. carefully.

  578. He says,

  579. be diligent

  580. to be found

  581. by him,

  582. that's the

  583. Lord when he

  584. comes back,

  585. without spot

  586. or blemish

  587. and at

  588. peace.

  589. The NIV

  590. translates that

  591. first phrase

  592. be diligent

  593. as make

  594. every effort.

  595. God wants

  596. us to make

  597. every effort.

  598. God wants

  599. us to try

  600. our hardest

  601. to be people

  602. of high

  603. moral character.

  604. That's the way

  605. he wants us

  606. to live.

  607. That's the kind

  608. of character

  609. he wants us

  610. to develop.

  611. And when

  612. the Lord,

  613. when we do

  614. see the Lord,

  615. whether it be

  616. we die or

  617. he comes back,

  618. we won't be

  619. ashamed.

  620. We won't be

  621. embarrassed.

  622. Now,

  623. when he says,

  624. be diligent

  625. to be found

  626. by him

  627. without spot

  628. or blemish,

  629. he talks about

  630. make every effort.

  631. That means

  632. to try your

  633. hardest.

  634. Hopefully,

  635. you know,

  636. and just in

  637. case you don't

  638. want to clarify

  639. here,

  640. this does not

  641. mean that we

  642. have to try

  643. our hardest

  644. to earn

  645. God's favor

  646. or to save

  647. ourselves.

  648. As I said

  649. when I was

  650. reading through

  651. that passage,

  652. Peter's making

  653. it clear that

  654. he's writing

  655. to Christians,

  656. people who

  657. are already

  658. right with

  659. God because

  660. they are

  661. trusting in

  662. Jesus.

  663. He's writing

  664. this letter,

  665. it's addressed

  666. to Christians,

  667. he refers to

  668. them as the

  669. beloved,

  670. they're his

  671. brothers and

  672. sisters in

  673. Christ.

  674. So Peter is

  675. writing to

  676. people who are

  677. already Christians

  678. and he's saying

  679. it matters how

  680. you live.

  681. He's saying

  682. you need to

  683. put forth

  684. every effort

  685. to live this

  686. kind of

  687. pure and

  688. peaceful life

  689. that will

  690. please God,

  691. that will

  692. please the

  693. Lord Jesus

  694. when we see

  695. him,

  696. whenever it

  697. is that we

  698. see him.

  699. Now,

  700. this is a

  701. command for

  702. us to

  703. put forth

  704. the effort,

  705. we can put

  706. it this way,

  707. this is a

  708. command for

  709. us to put

  710. forth the

  711. effort to

  712. live like

  713. the Christian

  714. that we are

  715. through faith

  716. in Jesus.

  717. Paul said

  718. something similar

  719. in his letter

  720. to the

  721. Philippian church.

  722. I want you to

  723. look at it,

  724. it's on the

  725. screen,

  726. Philippians

    Philippians 2:12

  727. chapter 2

  728. verses 12

  729. and 13,

  730. look at it,

  731. the first

  732. verse,

  733. therefore,

  734. my beloved,

  735. as you have

  736. always obeyed,

  737. so now,

  738. not only as

  739. in my presence,

  740. but much more

  741. in my absence,

  742. work out

  743. your own

  744. salvation

  745. with fear

  746. and trembling.

  747. Let's stop

  748. there.

  749. Paul is

  750. writing to

  751. Christians,

  752. the church

  753. in the city

  754. of Philippi,

  755. people who

  756. are Christians,

  757. people who

  758. have experienced

  759. salvation.

  760. He's telling

  761. them to

  762. put it into

  763. practice

  764. with that

  765. word,

  766. work out

  767. your salvation.

  768. He's talking

  769. about being

  770. very serious

  771. about it

  772. with fear

  773. and trembling

  774. and then he

  775. goes on to

  776. describe how

  777. that takes

  778. place.

  779. For it is

  780. God who

  781. works in

  782. you both

  783. to will

  784. and to

  785. work for

  786. his good

  787. pleasure.

  788. Let's

  789. think about

  790. what he's

  791. saying there.

  792. When God

  793. saves us,

  794. he puts

  795. his spirit

  796. in us.

  797. Whenever

  798. you became

  799. a Christian,

  800. whenever you

  801. were born

  802. again,

  803. you put

  804. your faith

  805. in Jesus,

  806. you turn

  807. from your

  808. sin,

  809. God put

  810. his spirit

  811. in you.

  812. In Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  813. chapter 8,

  814. we're told

  815. that if the

  816. spirit of God

  817. does not

  818. live in us,

  819. we are not

  820. Christians.

  821. very clear.

  822. From the

  823. point that

  824. the Holy

  825. Spirit comes

  826. to live

  827. within us,

  828. he works

  829. in us

  830. to enable

  831. us to

  832. work out

  833. our salvation.

  834. And the

  835. way he does

  836. that,

  837. he gives

  838. us the

  839. desire

  840. and the

  841. ability

  842. to live

  843. a life

  844. that pleases

  845. God.

  846. Let's

  847. sort of

  848. pause here

  849. and evaluate

  850. this.

  851. if you

  852. are a

  853. Christian,

  854. you should

  855. be able

  856. to say,

  857. like this

  858. verse is

  859. saying in

  860. some way,

  861. you should

  862. understand and

  863. be able to

  864. say,

  865. I am a

  866. Christian,

  867. the Spirit

  868. of God

  869. works in

  870. me,

  871. and he

  872. gives me

  873. desires

  874. to live

  875. the kind

  876. of life

  877. that would

  878. please God.

  879. He causes

  880. me to

  881. want to

  882. do the

  883. kinds of

  884. things that

  885. please God

  886. like,

  887. tell the

  888. truth,

  889. love your

  890. spouse.

  891. He puts

  892. desires in

  893. you to

  894. cause you

  895. to know,

  896. I don't

  897. want to

  898. lie.

  899. I don't

  900. want to

  901. be dishonest.

  902. I don't

  903. want to

  904. be a

  905. jerk

  906. husband.

  907. I don't

  908. want to

  909. be a

  910. battle

  911. axe kind

  912. of wife.

  913. The Spirit

  914. of God

  915. causes us

  916. to have

  917. the right

  918. kind of

  919. desires

  920. that would

  921. please God.

  922. And not

  923. only does

  924. He give

  925. us these

  926. kind of

  927. desires,

  928. if we'll

  929. cooperate with

  930. Him,

  931. He will

  932. give us

  933. the ability

  934. to see

  935. what we

  936. need to

  937. do and

  938. put forth

  939. the effort

  940. like that

  941. verse is

  942. talking about

  943. to sometimes

  944. close our

  945. mouths,

  946. sometimes do

  947. the thing

  948. that is

  949. hard to

  950. do,

  951. sometimes

  952. resist the

  953. temptation

  954. that seems

  955. overwhelming.

  956. Now don't

  957. misunderstand this

  958. now.

  959. We talk

  960. about the

  961. Spirit of

  962. God works

  963. in us

  964. to give

  965. us both

  966. the will

  967. and the

  968. work for

  969. His good

  970. pleasure.

  971. The Spirit

  972. of God

  973. lives in

  974. us,

  975. but sometimes

  976. we're not

  977. very sensitive

  978. to His

  979. presence.

  980. And so

  981. sometimes we

  982. don't have

  983. the strongest

  984. desire.

  985. Sometimes we're

  986. just not willing

  987. to put forth

  988. the effort.

  989. That's because

  990. we have a

  991. sinful nature.

  992. We're still

  993. tempted to do

  994. what we want

  995. to do,

  996. to ignore

  997. the Holy

  998. Spirit's

  999. prompting

  1000. desires.

  1001. But Peter

  1002. is telling

  1003. us,

  1004. in effect

  1005. here where

  1006. we are,

  1007. be diligent.

  1008. Put forth

  1009. your best

  1010. effort to

  1011. cooperate with

  1012. the Holy

  1013. Spirit to

  1014. develop Christ-like

  1015. character,

  1016. specifically to

  1017. be pure

  1018. and peaceful.

  1019. Now,

  1020. what God

  1021. calls us to

  1022. do in our

  1023. relationship

  1024. with Him

  1025. in terms of

  1026. put forth

  1027. effort,

  1028. work at it,

  1029. what God

  1030. calls us to

  1031. do like that

  1032. in our

  1033. relationship

  1034. with Him

  1035. is really

  1036. no different

  1037. from all

  1038. our other

  1039. relationships.

  1040. You think

  1041. about it.

  1042. If you're

  1043. married,

  1044. don't you

  1045. have to put

  1046. forth an

  1047. effort

  1048. to develop

  1049. a close

  1050. and intimate

  1051. relationship

  1052. and maintain

  1053. it with your

  1054. spouse?

  1055. Some of you

  1056. have to do

  1057. it,

  1058. work a lot

  1059. harder than

  1060. others.

  1061. I can tell,

  1062. I can see

  1063. some punching

  1064. going on

  1065. right here.

  1066. I said that

  1067. to be a

  1068. smart,

  1069. that can be

  1070. funny,

  1071. but it's

  1072. true.

  1073. Sometimes

  1074. we just

  1075. don't want

  1076. to do it

  1077. because we're

  1078. selfish,

  1079. because we're

  1080. lazy,

  1081. because

  1082. they don't

  1083. deserve it

  1084. today,

  1085. right?

  1086. But if

  1087. we're going

  1088. to have

  1089. the kind

  1090. of relationship

  1091. that makes

  1092. us think,

  1093. as we think

  1094. about going

  1095. home,

  1096. we get a

  1097. smile on

  1098. our face.

  1099. We think

  1100. about doing

  1101. something with

  1102. our spouse.

  1103. We get

  1104. excited about

  1105. it.

  1106. Hopefully,

  1107. you don't

  1108. think you

  1109. have to earn

  1110. your spouse's

  1111. love.

  1112. Something's

  1113. wrong if

  1114. you have to

  1115. earn their

  1116. love.

  1117. Something's

  1118. wrong if

  1119. you are

  1120. communicating

  1121. to your

  1122. spouse that

  1123. he or she

  1124. has to

  1125. earn your

  1126. love.

  1127. Hopefully,

  1128. you're married

  1129. to someone,

  1130. those of you

  1131. who are

  1132. married,

  1133. and you

  1134. know that

  1135. they love

  1136. you.

  1137. There is

  1138. no doubt.

  1139. Some days

  1140. they don't

  1141. like you,

  1142. but they do

  1143. love you.

  1144. If you

  1145. have a

  1146. healthy

  1147. marriage,

  1148. you want

  1149. to demonstrate

  1150. your love

  1151. by doing

  1152. certain

  1153. things for

  1154. and with

  1155. your spouse.

  1156. If you

  1157. have a

  1158. healthy

  1159. relationship,

  1160. you want

  1161. to do

  1162. some things

  1163. for her.

  1164. You want

  1165. to do

  1166. some things

  1167. with him.

  1168. You want

  1169. to show

  1170. that love.

  1171. Sometimes

  1172. it's just

  1173. hard.

  1174. Life is

  1175. busy for

  1176. all of us,

  1177. isn't it?

  1178. Not enough

  1179. hours a day

  1180. to do all

  1181. the things

  1182. we want

  1183. to do,

  1184. all the

  1185. good things

  1186. that come

  1187. through our

  1188. minds.

  1189. That's why

  1190. we've got

  1191. to actually

  1192. put forth

  1193. effort.

  1194. We've got

  1195. to work

  1196. at doing

  1197. what we

  1198. know is

  1199. important.

  1200. We've got

  1201. to work

  1202. on doing

  1203. the things

  1204. that we

  1205. cannot

  1206. neglect.

  1207. That applies

  1208. not just

  1209. to a

  1210. relationship

  1211. between

  1212. husband and

  1213. wife.

  1214. It applies

  1215. to a

  1216. relationship

  1217. between

  1218. parents and

  1219. children.

  1220. If you've

  1221. got children,

  1222. you've got

  1223. to put

  1224. forth the

  1225. effort to

  1226. develop and

  1227. maintain a

  1228. close relationship

  1229. with them,

  1230. to have

  1231. those open

  1232. channels of

  1233. communication.

  1234. That kind

  1235. of stuff is

  1236. tiring,

  1237. isn't it?

  1238. Sometimes it's

  1239. tiring physically

  1240. and emotionally.

  1241. If you've got

  1242. children living

  1243. at home,

  1244. if you're

  1245. going to

  1246. maintain or

  1247. recapture a

  1248. good relationship,

  1249. you've got to

  1250. spend some time

  1251. together.

  1252. You've got to

  1253. talk.

  1254. Not text,

  1255. but talk

  1256. face to face.

  1257. Nothing wrong

  1258. with texting.

  1259. But you

  1260. can't replace

  1261. talking and

  1262. listening face

  1263. to face.

  1264. But here's

  1265. the thing.

  1266. In most

  1267. family situations,

  1268. whether your

  1269. children are

  1270. teenagers or

  1271. little, you

  1272. get up in the

  1273. morning, mom

  1274. and dad, you

  1275. go off to

  1276. work, children

  1277. go off to

  1278. school, you

  1279. come back at

  1280. the end of

  1281. the day,

  1282. everybody's

  1283. tired.

  1284. Maybe you

  1285. come home at

  1286. the end of

  1287. the day, you

  1288. go to play

  1289. ball, you

  1290. have some

  1291. kind of other

  1292. extracurricular

  1293. activity at

  1294. school or

  1295. somewhere.

  1296. And you

  1297. come home and

  1298. everybody's just

  1299. tired.

  1300. We don't

  1301. want to talk.

  1302. We don't

  1303. want to have

  1304. to engage.

  1305. We just

  1306. sort of want

  1307. to lay back

  1308. and unwind and

  1309. then go to bed.

  1310. And if you do

  1311. that day after

  1312. day after day,

  1313. you all of a

  1314. sudden realize

  1315. we haven't

  1316. spoken.

  1317. We haven't

  1318. actually talked.

  1319. I haven't

  1320. actually listened

  1321. for two

  1322. weeks.

  1323. One of my

  1324. favorite Bible

  1325. teachers is

  1326. Matt Chandler.

  1327. We've done a

  1328. lot of his

  1329. studies on

  1330. Sunday nights in

  1331. our discipleship

  1332. classes.

  1333. I have been

  1334. helped by him

  1335. as he's talked

  1336. about in several

  1337. studies and in the

  1338. one we're involved

  1339. in right now on

  1340. Sunday nights.

  1341. how hard it is

  1342. some days he'll

  1343. tell us to go

  1344. into his

  1345. children's rooms

  1346. at bedtime and

  1347. spend time with

  1348. them in the way

  1349. that he knows he

  1350. needs to.

  1351. He's tired.

  1352. He's worn out.

  1353. But he says

  1354. because I love

  1355. my children, I

  1356. want to keep an

  1357. open line of

  1358. communication.

  1359. I want to have a

  1360. close relationship

  1361. with them.

  1362. I want to have

  1363. an influence in

  1364. their lives.

  1365. I go in there

  1366. and I lay down

1367. on the bed and I

  1368. ask them about

  1369. their day and I

  1370. listen.

  1371. and we talk

  1372. and we pray

  1373. together.

  1374. And when I get

  1375. up and I think

  1376. back, it's worth

  1377. the effort.

  1378. It's worth the

  1379. putting forth the

  1380. effort, the being

  1381. diligent like Peter

  1382. is talking about

  1383. here.

  1384. Talking about your

  1385. relationship with

  1386. your spouse and

  1387. children may have

  1388. struck a nerve for

  1389. some of you right

  1390. now.

  1391. If I've struck a

  1392. nerve, I'm glad

  1393. because it's

  1394. something we need

  1395. to talk about.

  1396. We need to think

  1397. about here for a

  1398. moment.

  1399. What kind of

  1400. relationship right

  1401. now do you have

  1402. with your spouse?

  1403. What kind of

  1404. relationship do you

  1405. have with your

  1406. children?

  1407. What kind of

  1408. relationship do you

  1409. have with your

  1410. parents right now?

  1411. could the words

  1412. purity and

  1413. peaceful apply in

  1414. terms of the

  1415. words you're

  1416. normally speaking to

  1417. one another?

1418. The way you talk to

  1419. one another?

  1420. Well, the way you

  1421. talk about one

  1422. another.

  1423. The words purity and

  1424. peaceful apply in

1425. terms of the way you

  1426. think about that

  1427. person that you live

  1428. with.

  1429. And then would the

  1430. words purity and

  1431. peaceful describe the

  1432. way you interact?

  1433. Right now, this

  1434. moment is a good

  1435. time for you to

  1436. evaluate your

  1437. relationship with

  1438. your spouse and

  1439. your children.

  1440. It's a good time for

  1441. you to evaluate your

  1442. relationship with your

  1443. parents, those of you

1444. who are living at home

  1445. especially.

1446. We all can agree that

  1447. it's God's will for

  1448. our relationships to be

  1449. healthy.

  1450. But Peter is telling

  1451. us, as in everything

  1452. about living the

  1453. Christian life, it

  1454. takes diligence.

  1455. You've got to put

  1456. forth the effort.

  1457. You've got to work

  1458. to maintain, to

  1459. develop, to grow

  1460. relationships.

  1461. By God's grace, you

1462. can do it, or at

1463. least you can do what

  1464. you can do.

1465. But go back to what we

1466. said a while ago about

  1467. when God puts His

  1468. Spirit in us.

  1469. God gives all His

  1470. children the desire and

  1471. the ability to please

  1472. Him.

  1473. And being a godly

  1474. husband, wife, parent,

  1475. child, that pleases

  1476. His God.

1477. He talks about that in

  1478. His Word.

  1479. I want to encourage

  1480. you, get serious about

  1481. your home relationships

  1482. now.

1483. Homes in this country are

  1484. not healthy.

1485. A lot of homes, church

  1486. homes, are not

  1487. healthy.

  1488. And a lot of times, it's

1489. because we don't give it

1490. the attention we need to

  1491. give it.

  1492. And a lot of times, it's

1493. because we don't give it

  1494. the attention we should

  1495. because it takes work.

  1496. It takes effort.

  1497. It's hard, and we're just

1498. not willing to do it.

1499. We're too selfish and lazy

1500. to do what needs to be

  1501. done to maintain, to

  1502. develop, to grow

  1503. relationships with the

1504. people that we truly do

  1505. love more than anyone

  1506. else in the world.

1507. I want to encourage you, get

  1508. serious about your home

  1509. relationships now.

1510. If there is sin that you

  1511. need to confess, because

  1512. your speech, your

  1513. attitudes are far from

  1514. pure and peaceful, you

  1515. confess it to God.

1516. Agree with God about it.

  1517. Repent of it.

  1518. Change your mind about

  1519. living this way, talking

1520. this way, acting this way.

  1521. Turn from it.

  1522. Seek God's forgiveness.

1523. And the scripture says, if

1524. we confess our sins, he is

1525. faithful to forgive us and

1526. to cleanse us of all

  1527. unrighteousness.

1528. But after you confess it

1529. to God, confess it to

  1530. your spouse.

1531. Confess it to your child.

1532. Confess it to your parents.

1533. My attitude has stunk here

  1534. lately.

  1535. Things I've said I am so

  1536. ashamed of.

  1537. The way I've treated you, I

1538. know it is totally wrong.

  1539. Be open.

  1540. Be honest.

  1541. Confess with no

  1542. qualifications.

  1543. Seek their forgiveness.

1544. Now, if there's changes that

1545. need to be made in the way you

1546. talk to one another, make those

  1547. changes.

  1548. You've got to start.

1549. You don't wait for the other

  1550. person to start.

  1551. If you're showing, speaking

  1552. disrespectfully to your spouse,

1553. to your parent, to your child,

  1554. own it, kill it.

  1555. That attitude.

1556. Ask God to help you to learn to

1557. speak the right way, the loving

1558. way, the pure way, the peaceful

1559. way, to think that way, to act

  1560. that way.

1561. If there's changes that need to be

1562. made in how you spend your time,

1563. ask God to help you to see what

1564. needs to be done, what changes need

1565. to be made, and make them.

  1566. Your family is important.

1567. Those are the most important

1568. relationships in the world, in this

  1569. world.

1570. For some reason, as I've worked on

1571. this message this week, and

1572. especially zero in an end this

1573. weekend, I have felt the need to

1574. focus, just to camp out here and

1575. focus on the character we

  1576. demonstrate in the home.

1577. I believe God wants that

1578. emphasized this morning, and if

1579. God wants it emphasized, it means

1580. there's people here that need to

1581. hear it, to heed it.

1582. If you're a Christian, the place to

1583. begin working to develop and

  1584. demonstrate pure and peaceful

1585. character is in your home.

1586. First of all, it's in your heart,

1587. and then it's in your home.

1588. More than anything else, that's

1589. what your family members need.

1590. They need that more than your

  1591. money.

1592. They need that more than your

1593. support, some kind of sport or

  1594. extracurricular activity.

1595. Your family needs for you to be the

1596. man, the woman of God, that God

1597. calls you to be and has put his

1598. spirit in you that will enable you

1599. to be, but you've got to work at

  1600. it.

1601. You've got to care enough to work

  1602. at it.

1603. The question is, will you?

1604. One day, sooner or later, we're all

1605. going to see Jesus face to face.

1606. It will happen immediately after we

1607. die, or if we're alive, he returns.

  1608. We'll see him then.

1609. But as you think about the Lord

1610. looking you in the eye, does that

  1611. comfort you?

1612. Or does that frighten you?

1613. You know, none of us will ever be

1614. totally without any spot or blemish

1615. as long as we live in this world.

  1616. We're fallen sinful people.

1617. God's working in us, but we're still

1618. having to fight the temptations of our

1619. sinful nature and the world around

1620. about us and the devil.

1621. But thankfully, if we are trusting, I

1622. want you to listen to this.

1623. If you are trusting in Jesus right

1624. now, God considers you without spot or

  1625. blemish for this reason.

1626. Because you're united to Jesus by faith,

1627. you are cleansed by his blood.

1628. What that means is, when Jesus died on

1629. the cross, he actually paid the penalty

  1630. for your sins.

  1631. He took your punishment.

  1632. He died.

  1633. He shed his blood.

1634. His blood cleanses you if you're united

  1635. to him by faith.

1636. If you're united to him by faith, you are

1637. clothed in his righteousness, his

  1638. rightness.

1639. Think about it this way.

1640. His perfectly spotless and blameless life,

1641. the life he lived in this world, that is

1642. credited to you through faith in him.

1643. So God accepts you as spotless and

1644. blameless because you're united to Jesus.

1645. God declared you to be spotless and

1646. blameless the moment you trusted in Jesus.

1647. But ever since that day, God has called you, been working in you

1648. through his spirit to cause you to want to actually become spotless and

  1649. blameless in your character.

1650. So the question now is, think to yourself, am I cooperating with the spirit of God as he gives

  1651. me these desires?

1652. Am I cooperating with him and obeying him, putting forth the effort to discipline myself

1653. and develop pure and peaceful character?

1654. Are you confessing your sins when you fail?

1655. As I said, we all do.

1656. And then are you, with God's help, getting up every time you fall and continuing to put forth your best effort

1657. with God's help to develop Christ-like character?

1658. You know, we can be ready to meet Jesus when he returns.

1659. We don't have to be afraid.

1660. We won't be perfect, but by God's grace, we can be found trusting him

1661. and obeying him in seeking to grow and develop pure and peaceful character.

1662. And if we're living like that when he returns, whenever it is, and he looks into our eyes,

  1663. it won't be frightening.

  1664. It'll be comforting.

1665. And it'll be exciting because we know he's come to take us, to bless us,

1666. and to take us to live with him for all eternity in that perfect place.

1667. But in the meantime, he calls us to put forth the effort to live like his people

1668. at home, at work, at school, wherever you go.

  1669. Let's pray together.

1670. Dear God, show us now how we should respond to what you have said about how we live today,

  1671. about developing Christian character.

1672. Show us what we need to do that we might leave here today prepared with your help

1673. to work on developing pure and peaceful character.

1674. In an attitude of prayer, you just listen to the Lord and obey him.

1675. Do what he's telling you to do.

1676. I'd be happy to pray with you if you want to right here at the front this moment.

1677. But what's most important is that we all listen to God, obey him, pray for people in your life.

  1678. Don't be a distraction.

1679. You just listen to the Lord and do what he's telling you to do.

1680. Pray for others during this next few minutes.
