  1. read or hear about someone who has destroyed their credibility

  2. and it's no one's fault but their own.

  3. Jesse Smollett.

  4. He's the poster child of someone doing that right now.

  5. But what he's done is not something new.

  6. People have been doing that, well-known people,

  7. obscure people.

  8. People have been doing that since the Garden of Eden.

  9. You can think of individuals well-known or in your family

  10. or among your friends who did some things

  11. that it appears they destroyed their credibility.

  12. It happens to Christians.

  13. In fact, one of the most well-known Christian leaders of all time,

  14. Simon Peter, the leader of Jesus' disciples,

  15. he almost destroyed his credibility.

  16. Most of you in here, you know the story.

  17. He appeared to have just blown it all when, right after Jesus was arrested,

  18. Peter was asked not once, not twice, but three times,

  19. do you know him or you are one of his?

  20. And all three times, Peter said, no.

  21. I don't even know the man.

  22. Now, that's well-known among Christians.

  23. But do you remember what happened before Peter did that?

  24. Before Jesus was arrested,

  25. Jesus prayed this for Peter.

  26. Look at it.

  27. It's in Luke 22.

  28. Jesus said, I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail.

  29. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.

  30. By God's grace,

  31. Peter did not destroy his faith or his credibility.

  32. After he denied Jesus,

  33. the scripture tells us he went out and he was broken.

  34. He truly repented.

  35. He came back as a strong Christian, Christian leader,

  36. and pillar of the early church.

  37. He did exactly what Jesus prayed he would do.

  38. He strengthened his brothers.

  39. He did that to the very end of his life,

  40. as recorded in his last letter, 2 Peter.

  41. If you would, turn there with me this morning.

  42. 2 Peter, chapter 3,

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  43. the last letter that this disciple,

  44. who appeared to have messed up his life,

  45. destroyed his credibility,

  46. but he came back.

  47. This is not the focus of the message this morning,

  48. but I want you to know this.

  49. If you have royally messed up some things in your life,

  50. maybe you've done some things just within your family

  51. or to a certain friend

  52. or where you work

  53. or where you did work.

  54. You've done some things that

  55. it appears you have lost your credibility.

  56. I want you to not give up.

  57. By the grace of God,

  58. if Peter could come back from what he did,

  59. you can come back as well.

  60. Sometimes it takes time.

  61. Sometimes it requires God working in some other people's lives

  62. to forgive you

  63. and to show you grace.

  64. But God can work in all kinds of situations,

  65. and he does,

  66. to rescue us when we blow it,

  67. as in a case like Peter.

  68. 2 Peter, chapter 3,

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  69. beginning in verse 13.

  70. We're going to continue to look at

  71. how God expects us,

  72. commands us,

  73. to live in this world

  74. until we see Jesus face to face.

  75. Now that day is going to come

  76. for every single one of us in here.

  77. One day we're going to see Jesus face to face.

  78. It'll be the day that we die.

  79. You know, we looked at that

  80. a few weeks ago.

  81. We did a series,

  82. what happens after we die,

  83. what happens after Christians die.

  84. And we looked at

  85. from several different passages of Scripture,

  86. when we close our eyes in death

  87. in this world,

  88. we're going to open them again immediately

  89. in the presence of Jesus.

  90. So one day,

  91. we're all going to be face to face with Jesus.

  92. Either right after we die,

  93. or we could be alive when He returns to this world.

  94. And we'll see Him when He comes back.

  95. But the point that Peter is going to make

  96. in this passage is,

  97. it matters how we live until that day.

  98. God holds us accountable

  99. for how we live our lives

  100. day in and day out in this world.

  101. Let's read it.

  102. 2 Peter chapter 3,

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  103. beginning in verse 13.

  104. But according to His promise,

  105. we are waiting for new heavens

  106. and a new earth

  107. in which righteousness dwells.

  108. Therefore, beloved,

  109. since you are waiting for these things,

  110. be diligent to be found by Him

  111. without spot or blemish

  112. and at peace.

  113. And count the patience of the Lord

  114. as salvation,

  115. just as our beloved brother Paul

  116. also wrote to you

  117. according to the wisdom given Him,

  118. as He does in all His letters

  119. when He speaks in them of these matters.

  120. There are some things in them

  121. that are hard to understand,

  122. which the ignorant and unstable

  123. twist to their own destruction,

  124. as they do the other scriptures.

  125. You, therefore, beloved,

  126. knowing this beforehand,

  127. take care that you are not carried away

  128. with the error of lawless people

  129. and lose your own stability,

  130. but grow in the grace and knowledge

  131. of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  132. To Him be the glory both now

  133. and to the day of eternity.

  134. Amen.

  135. God cares how we live right now.

  136. Here's what we looked at last week.

  137. Get serious about your character.

  138. As we live life in this world,

  139. right up till the day we die

  140. or Jesus comes,

  141. God wants us to be serious

  142. about who we are

  143. in terms of our character.

  144. Look at verse 14.

  145. He says,

  146. Be diligent to be found by Him

  147. without spot or blemish

  148. and at peace.

  149. That was what we looked at last week

  150. in a lot of detail.

  151. So let's just hit some highlights here.

  152. God calls each one of us

  153. to develop and demonstrate

  154. Christian character in two ways.

  155. A lot of ways really,

  156. but two in this passage.

  157. Number one,

  158. live a pure life.

  159. That's what He's talking about

  160. when He says,

  161. without spot or blemish.

  162. Purity matters to God.

  163. And as I said last week,

  164. some people look at that

  165. and they just automatically think

  166. about sexual purity

  167. and it certainly matters to God.

  168. But God cares about

  169. how we live in every realm of our lives.

  170. God cares about us

  171. being morally pure

  172. in our own minds

  173. and what we think

  174. when nobody else knows.

  175. He cares about us

  176. being morally pure

  177. in our speech.

  178. The way we talk to people

  179. and about people.

  180. And obviously,

  181. God cares about

  182. our moral purity

  183. and just the way we live.

  184. That includes

  185. our private lives

  186. when nobody else is around,

  187. nobody else sees,

  188. as well as our public life.

  189. A lot of you know

  190. a well-known concept

  191. or definition of character.

  192. Character is defined

  193. by how we are

  194. when no one's looking

  195. just as much

  196. as when

  197. everyone is looking.

  198. God wants us to live

  199. pure lives.

  200. It matters.

  201. God also wants us

  202. to live a peaceful life.

  203. Look at that word,

  204. not just spotless

  205. and blameless,

  206. but at peace.

  207. It's important

  208. that we live

  209. at peace

  210. with God

  211. and other people.

  212. But the point here

  213. seems to be

  214. the character quality

  215. of peace.

  216. And peace is

  217. the character quality.

  218. We've done a study

  219. on Wednesday nights

  220. on the fruit of the Spirit

  221. not too long ago.

  222. Paul lists

  223. in Galatians chapter 5

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  224. a list of character qualities

  225. that he calls

  226. the fruit of the Spirit

  227. and one of them

  228. is peace.

  229. Now,

  230. one of the best ways

  231. for us to develop

  232. such peace

  233. is to truly

  234. trust God

  235. that He is both

  236. wise

  237. and sovereign.

  238. That means

  239. we need to learn

  240. to trust God

  241. that He's wise.

  242. He always knows

  243. what's best,

  244. what's right

  245. for us.

  246. And because

  247. He's sovereign,

  248. He always has

  249. the ability,

  250. the power

  251. to bring it about

  252. when He wants to

  253. and in the way

  254. He wants to.

  255. If we'll learn

  256. to trust God

  257. like this

  258. instead of worrying,

  259. peace will be

  260. the result.

  261. I want you to look

  262. at what Paul says

  263. in Philippians chapter 4

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  264. along this line.

  265. He says,

  266. Do not be anxious

  267. about anything,

  268. but in every situation

  269. by prayer

  270. and petition

  271. with thanksgiving

  272. present your requests

  273. to God.

  274. and the peace

  275. of God

  276. which transcends

  277. all understanding

  278. will guard your hearts

  279. and your minds

  280. in Christ Jesus.

  281. We can develop

  282. this character

  283. quality

  284. of peace,

  285. of wellness,

  286. rightness

  287. when we learn

  288. to trust God,

  289. take things to Him

  290. in prayer

  291. instead of worrying

  292. about it

  293. because He has

  294. the power

  295. and the ability

  296. to actually

  297. do things

  298. that will work out

  299. in the way

  300. that's best for us.

  301. Trust Him.

  302. Now,

  303. we also saw last week

  304. that God calls us

  305. to put forth

  306. our best effort

  307. to develop such character.

  308. Look at the first words again.

  309. Be diligent

  310. to be found by Him

  311. without spot

  312. or blemishing

  313. at peace.

  314. God's actually

  315. commanding us

  316. to try hard

  317. to live like

  318. the Christian

  319. that He has

  320. already made us.

  321. This doesn't mean

  322. try hard

  323. to make yourself

  324. right with God.

  325. I emphasized

  326. that last week.

  327. We are saved

  328. by God's grace,

  329. His undeserved favor

  330. through faith

  331. in Jesus

  332. and what He's done

  333. not what we've done.

  334. When God saves us

  335. He puts His Spirit

  336. in us.

  337. The Holy Spirit

  338. works in us

  339. from the time

  340. we're saved.

  341. He works in us

  342. throughout our lives

  343. and He's the one

  344. who gives us

  345. desires

  346. to please God.

  347. You know,

  348. sometimes when you

  349. think right

  350. and you know

  351. you think better

  352. than other people,

  353. you have better desires

  354. than a lot of people

  355. maybe that

  356. you work with,

  357. some of your classmates.

  358. Don't pat yourself

  359. on the back.

  360. If you're a Christian

  361. that's the Spirit of God

  362. working in you,

  363. giving you

  364. those kind of desires

  365. and He'll not only

  366. give you those desires

  367. but Scripture tells us

  368. He will work in us

  369. to enable us

  370. to act on them,

  371. to do them.

  372. Again,

  373. from last week,

  374. Philippians 2.13,

  375. for it is God

  376. who works in you

  377. both to will

  378. and to work

  379. for His good pleasure.

  380. Peter's telling us

  381. here in verse 14,

  382. in effect,

  383. put forth your best effort

  384. to cooperate

  385. with the Holy Spirit

  386. so that you can be

  387. pure

  388. and peaceful,

  389. a pure and peaceful

  390. Christian.

  391. Now,

  392. let's move on.

  393. The next way

  394. to get ready

  395. to meet Jesus

  396. face to face

  397. whenever that will be

  398. is this,

  399. make the most

  400. of God's patience.

  401. Have you ever thought

  402. about how patient

  403. God is

  404. and why?

  405. Well,

  406. let's look at it.

  407. This is going to be

  408. in verses 15

  409. and the first part

  410. of verse 16.

  411. He says,

  412. and count the patience

  413. of our Lord

  414. as salvation.

  415. God's giving us

  416. time to be saved.

  417. And count the patience

  418. of our Lord

  419. as salvation.

  420. Just as our

  421. beloved brother Paul

  422. also wrote to you

  423. according to the wisdom

  424. given him

  425. as he does

  426. in all of his letters

  427. when he speaks

  428. in them about

  429. these matters.

  430. Peter is describing

  431. God as being patient

  432. and that's his way

  433. of explaining

  434. why Jesus

  435. has not come back

  436. into this world.

  437. We'll look at it

  438. later on next week.

  439. Peter is combating

  440. false teachers.

  441. People in the church,

  442. people who came

  443. into the church

  444. and caused all kinds

  445. of problems

  446. because they were

  447. teaching things

  448. that were wrong,

  449. that were leading

  450. people astray.

  451. And one of the things

  452. they were teaching

  453. is this.

  454. These New Testament

  455. leaders like Peter,

  456. Paul,

  457. they've been saying

  458. for years

  459. that Jesus was

  460. coming back.

  461. Well, he hasn't.

  462. And the reason he hasn't

  463. is he's not going to.

  464. And so Peter's responding,

  465. they don't know

  466. what they're talking about.

  467. The reason that Jesus

  468. has not returned

  469. to this world yet

  470. is because God

  471. is being patient

  472. with people,

  473. giving them time

  474. to be saved.

  475. I want you to look

  476. back at verse 9.

  477. We didn't read it,

  478. but we're in 2 Peter

    2 Peter 3:9

  479. chapter 3,

  480. verse 9.

  481. It's going to be

  482. on the screen.

  483. Peter explains this

  484. in more detail.

  485. The Lord is not slow

  486. to fulfill His promise,

  487. as some count slowness,

  488. but is patient

  489. toward you,

  490. not wishing that

  491. any should perish,

  492. but that all

  493. should reach repentance.

  494. Now think about

  495. what He's saying.

  496. People are saying,

  497. Lord's never coming back.

  498. It's been this long,

  499. He never will.

  500. But Peter is saying,

  501. no.

  502. The reason that Jesus

  503. has not yet returned

  504. is because God

  505. is patiently

  506. waiting,

  507. working in people's lives,

  508. giving them time

  509. to repent.

  510. And Peter points out

  511. that Paul

  512. taught the same thing

  513. in His letters.

  514. Now,

  515. we don't know

  516. which letters.

  517. It could have been,

  518. for example,

  519. Romans.

  520. Here's why I say that.

  521. Paul emphasized

  522. not only God's patience,

  523. but also His kindness

  524. in this statement.

  525. Look at it.

  526. He says,

  527. do you presume

  528. on the riches

  529. of His kindness

  530. and forbearance

  531. and patience,

  532. not knowing

  533. that God's kindness

  534. is meant to lead you

  535. to repentance?

  536. Now,

  537. I want us to just

  538. pause here

  539. for a few minutes

  540. and think about

  541. that God is patient.

  542. He's patient with us.

  543. He's patient with people

  544. who do not believe.

  545. God's patience

  546. reveals His love,

  547. His mercy,

  548. and His grace.

  549. I don't know

  550. what everyone's concept

  551. of God is.

  552. Some people have

  553. a warped view

  554. that God's in heaven

  555. looking down on us,

  556. waiting for us

  557. to get out of line

  558. so He can inflict

  559. some kind of pain

  560. or punishment on us.

  561. That couldn't be

  562. further from the truth.

  563. These passages

  564. that I'm reading

  565. from Romans,

  566. here from 2 Peter,

  567. God's patience

  568. reveals that He's

  569. a God of love,

  570. of mercy,

  571. of grace.

  572. God does not

  573. want to destroy people.

  574. He wants to save people.

  575. Peter's telling us.

  576. But when Jesus

  577. returns to this world,

  578. the truth is

  579. the time for salvation

  580. will be over.

  581. At the time of death,

  582. our time of salvation

  583. will be over.

  584. Whatever a person's

  585. spiritual condition is,

  586. at the moment

  587. they see Jesus,

  588. whether it be through

  589. death or His return,

  590. at the moment

  591. they see Jesus,

  592. at the moment

  593. we see Jesus,

  594. our eternal destiny

  595. is determined.

  596. It is fixed.

  597. It is permanent.

  598. As we saw a few weeks

  599. ago in another study,

  600. that means

  601. it'll either be

  602. joy in heaven

  603. or torment

  604. in hell.

  605. That's the reality.

  606. The fact that Jesus

  607. has not yet come back

  608. to this world

  609. is because God

  610. is being patient

  611. with people.

  612. Right now,

  613. God is waiting

  614. for more and more people

  615. to repent of their sin

  616. and trust Jesus

  617. as their Lord and Savior.

  618. I'm going to touch on this

  619. a little bit later on,

  620. but right now,

  621. if you have family members

  622. and friends

  623. who are not Christians,

  624. you need to take this

  625. and make it personal.

  626. God is being patient,

  627. waiting on

  628. your loved one,

  629. your friend.

  630. And it may be

  631. that God is

  632. patiently waiting

  633. for you

  634. to share the gospel

  635. with that person.

  636. And through

  637. your witness,

  638. God's going to draw

  639. them to faith in Jesus.

  640. Don't discount

  641. that reality,

  642. that possibility.

  643. Now,

  644. if you're not

  645. a Christian,

  646. what Peter is saying,

  647. what Paul is saying,

  648. this means that God

  649. is patiently waiting

  650. for you right now.

  651. Also,

  652. if you are a Christian

  653. and you're living

  654. in rebellion

  655. against God,

  656. if you're a Christian

  657. and you know

  658. just as well

  659. as you're sitting there,

  660. I'm not right with God

  661. and I know why

  662. and I'm just not willing

  663. to do anything about it.

  664. I want you to know

  665. the fact that you are

  666. alive and here

  667. and hear that

  668. and understand that,

  669. that is God being patient.

  670. Because you are

  671. presuming upon

  672. His grace

  673. and mercy

  674. and love

  675. by still being

  676. rebellious.

  677. So,

  678. think about

  679. as we move on here,

  680. this applies

  681. to both Christians

  682. and unbelievers.

  683. God is being patient,

  684. but Paul says,

  685. God's also being kind.

  686. Look at it again.

  687. God's kindness

  688. is meant

  689. to lead you

  690. to repentance.

  691. Let's think about

  692. how God

  693. shows us

  694. patience

  695. and kindness

  696. or patient kindness.

  697. Think about

  698. how He does this

  699. in your life

  700. if you're not a Christian.

  701. But also

  702. in your life

  703. if you are a Christian

  704. and especially

  705. if

  706. you just won't

  707. listen to God.

  708. You won't

  709. obey Him

  710. right now.

  711. Maybe God's

  712. kindness toward you

  713. is in the form of

  714. you have good health.

  715. Your family

  716. life

  717. is great.

  718. You've got

  719. good friends

  720. who love you,

  721. care for you.

  722. Maybe God's

  723. patience

  724. and kindness

  725. with you

  726. is seen

  727. in your

  728. athletic ability,

  729. your musical talents.

  730. Maybe God's

  731. patience

  732. and kindness

  733. toward you

  734. is seen

  735. in just

  736. the good ways

  737. God

  738. has just

  739. blessed you.

  740. But if you're

  741. away from Him

  742. as a Christian

  743. or as an unbeliever,

  744. He's intended,

  745. He wants you

  746. to see

  747. these good things

  748. as signs

  749. of His

  750. kindness

  751. and patience,

  752. He wants you

  753. to come to Him.

  754. Let that goodness

  755. bring you

  756. to Him.

  757. Maybe God

  758. is

  759. showing His

  760. patient kindness

  761. by preventing

  762. you from

  763. reaping

  764. the

  765. sinful

  766. seeds

  767. you have

  768. sown.

  769. the

  770. scripture

  771. talks about

  772. something

  773. that a lot

  774. of people

  775. refer to

  776. as the

  777. law of the

  778. harvest.

  779. We reap

  780. what we

  781. sow.

  782. But maybe

  783. you can think

  784. right now,

  785. I've sown

  786. some pretty

  787. bad seeds

  788. and nothing's

  789. happened.

  790. That's God

  791. being patient.

  792. That's God's

  793. kindness.

  794. kindness.

  795. But don't

  796. presume that

  797. just because

  798. the crop

  799. hasn't come

  800. in yet

  801. that it

  802. won't ever.

  803. We reap

  804. what we

  805. sow.

  806. That's a

  807. biblical

  808. principle.

  809. And I

  810. want to

  811. encourage you

  812. before you

  813. have to

  814. haul in

  815. that

  816. harvest,

  817. listen to

  818. the Lord

  819. and obey

  820. Him.

  821. Confess

  822. that sin.

  823. put your

  824. trust in

  825. Christ.

  826. Don't

  827. presume upon

  828. God's

  829. patience.

  830. It could

  831. be that

  832. God's

  833. showing you

  834. His

  835. patient

  836. kindness

  837. by helping

  838. your family

  839. and friends

  840. to not

  841. give up on

  842. you even

  843. though you've

  844. given them

  845. reason to

  846. do that.

  847. It may

  848. be that

  849. right now

  850. your

  851. spouse

  852. or your

  853. children

  854. or your

  855. parents

  856. they have

  857. every reason

  858. in the world

  859. just to

  860. let you

  861. go

  862. because of

  863. the way

  864. you've

  865. mistreated

  866. them,

  867. dishonored

  868. them.

  869. It may

  870. be that

  871. you've lost

  872. some

  873. credibility

  874. or maybe

  875. all credibility

  876. in their

  877. eyes but

  878. by the

  879. grace of

  880. God they

  881. are being

  882. patient

  883. with you

  884. and waiting

  885. for you

  886. to wake

  887. up.

  888. Waiting

  889. for you to

  890. get right

  891. with God

  892. and then get

  893. right with

  894. them.

  895. maybe God's

  896. kindness

  897. is in the

  898. form of

  899. allowing you

  900. to have

  901. some kind

  902. of serious

  903. problem

  904. to wake

  905. you up

  906. spiritually

  907. before it's

  908. too late.

  909. I have a

  910. Christian friend

  911. who was living

  912. in rebellion

  913. against God

  914. at one point

  915. and God

  916. put them

  917. in the

  918. hospital

  919. with a

  920. sudden

  921. physical

  922. problem

  923. and as

  924. it turned

  925. out

  926. that was

  927. an act

  928. of God's

  929. kindness

  930. because that

  931. interruption

  932. that hospital

  933. stay

  934. disrupted

  935. the plan

  936. to carry

  937. out some

  938. sinful

  939. behaviors

  940. and when

  941. all was

  942. said and

  943. done

  944. they did

  945. not act

  946. on

  947. those

  948. sinful

  949. plans

  950. they had

  951. made.

  952. God's

  953. kindness

  954. intervened

  955. but through

  956. the hospital.

  957. I have

  958. another

  959. Christian

  960. friend

  961. who

  962. rebelled

  963. against

  964. God

  965. and did

  966. not repent

  967. until he

  968. had lost

  969. everything

  970. his wife

  971. his job

  972. and his

  973. reputation.

  974. He finally

  975. woke up

  976. truly repented

  977. came back

  978. to God

  979. but he

  980. never got

  981. his wife

  982. or his

  983. job

  984. or his

  985. reputation

  986. back.

  987. He did

  988. lose

  989. much

  990. in that

  991. process.

  992. If you're

  993. not a

  994. Christian

  995. the fact

  996. that you

  997. are alive

  998. and hearing

  999. this message

  1000. is an

  1001. expression

  1002. of God's

  1003. patience

  1004. and kindness

  1005. that also

  1006. applies to

  1007. you if you

  1008. are a

  1009. willfully

  1010. disobedient

  1011. Christian.

  1012. But the

  1013. day will

  1014. come

  1015. God's

  1016. patience

  1017. will end.

  1018. God is

  1019. truly loving

  1020. but he

  1021. is also

  1022. holy.

  1023. God

  1024. loves us

  1025. but he

  1026. cannot allow

  1027. our sin

  1028. to go

  1029. unpunished.

  1030. The good

  1031. news of the

  1032. Bible is

  1033. that God

  1034. provided a

  1035. way to

  1036. express both

  1037. his love

  1038. and his

  1039. holy justice.

  1040. He did

  1041. that by

  1042. sending Jesus

  1043. into this

  1044. world to

  1045. take the

  1046. punishment for

  1047. our sins.

  1048. God

  1049. was dying

  1050. on the

  1051. cross.

  1052. He took

  1053. our sins

  1054. upon himself

  1055. and he

  1056. experienced

  1057. God's

  1058. wrath.

  1059. He

  1060. experienced

  1061. the punishment

  1062. that we

  1063. deserved.

  1064. Jesus

  1065. suffered what

  1066. we could

  1067. consider the

  1068. torment of

  1069. hell as he

  1070. died on the

  1071. cross.

  1072. The pain,

  1073. the torment

  1074. of being

  1075. separated from

  1076. God.

  1077. That's why he

  1078. cried out as

  1079. he hung on

  1080. the cross,

  1081. my God,

  1082. my God,

  1083. why have you

  1084. forsaken me?

  1085. God had

  1086. turned away

  1087. from him

  1088. as he was

  1089. our sin

  1090. bearer

  1091. taking our

  1092. punishment.

  1093. But there on

  1094. the cross as

  1095. he did that,

  1096. he paid the

  1097. penalty for our

  1098. sins in full,

  1099. which means

  1100. when he cried

  1101. out at the

  1102. end,

  1103. before he

  1104. died,

  1105. it is

  1106. finished.

  1107. It means

  1108. everything

  1109. necessary for

  1110. us to be

  1111. right with

  1112. God has

  1113. been done.

  1114. The penalty

  1115. for our sin

  1116. has been

  1117. paid.

  1118. Jesus died

  1119. and was

  1120. buried,

  1121. but God

  1122. raised him

  1123. from the

  1124. dead,

  1125. and when he

  1126. raised him

  1127. from the

  1128. dead,

  1129. that shows

  1130. us that

  1131. God has

  1132. accepted

  1133. Jesus'

  1134. sacrifice

  1135. for us.

  1136. By raising

  1137. Jesus from

  1138. the dead,

  1139. God is

  1140. saying,

  1141. Jesus has

  1142. defeated sin

  1143. and death

  1144. and the

  1145. devil.

  1146. He's won

  1147. that victory

  1148. for us.

  1149. This is the

  1150. gospel.

  1151. This is the

  1152. good news of

  1153. God's gracious

  1154. salvation through

  1155. faith in

  1156. Jesus.

  1157. But this

  1158. gospel requires

  1159. our response.

  1160. It's not

  1161. enough just to

  1162. believe these

  1163. facts.

  1164. We've got to

  1165. respond to what

  1166. Christ has done

  1167. for us.

  1168. We've got to

  1169. repent of our

  1170. sin, change

  1171. our mind about

  1172. it, own up to

  1173. it, turn from

  1174. it.

  1175. We've got to

  1176. put our

  1177. personal trust,

  1178. faith, confidence

  1179. in Jesus as my

  1180. Savior.

  1181. and commit

  1182. my life to

  1183. Him as my

  1184. Lord.

  1185. Here's what I

  1186. want to ask

  1187. you.

  1188. Have you made

  1189. this kind of

  1190. commitment?

  1191. Have you made

  1192. this kind of

  1193. response to the

  1194. gospel?

  1195. Everyone in here,

  1196. have you made

  1197. this kind of

  1198. response?

  1199. If not,

  1200. will you do it

  1201. now?

  1202. Will you cry out

  1203. to God,

  1204. confessing your

  1205. sin, turning

  1206. from it, putting

  1207. your faith in

  1208. Jesus, calling

  1209. upon Him to

  1210. save you?

  1211. If you'll do

  1212. that right now,

  1213. the Scripture

  1214. says, whoever

  1215. will call upon

  1216. the name of

  1217. the Lord will

  1218. be saved.

  1219. But I know

  1220. that the

  1221. overwhelming

  1222. majority of

  1223. people in

  1224. this room, you

  1225. would say, I've

  1226. done that.

  1227. I've done that a

  1228. long time ago.

  1229. Well, here's what

  1230. I want us to

  1231. understand.

  1232. If we are

  1233. Christians, there

  1234. will be evidence

  1235. to show that.

  1236. I had a real

  1237. encouraging

  1238. conversation this

  1239. past week with

  1240. a man, late

  1241. 30s, early

  1242. 40s.

  1243. He's got a

  1244. real demanding

  1245. job, wife and

  1246. children.

  1247. He's got a very

  1248. busy life.

  1249. But in the

  1250. conversation with

  1251. this guy, I

  1252. found out he is

  1253. not only very

  1254. active in his

  1255. church, but he

  1256. is a real student

  1257. of the Bible.

  1258. And he was

  1259. telling me that

  1260. he was concerned.

  1261. There was no

  1262. pride or arrogance.

  1263. There was no, you

  1264. know, look at me

  1265. and putting people

  1266. down.

  1267. He's talked about

  1268. how he was so

  1269. concerned that just

  1270. around him, among

  1271. his family members

  1272. and friends, in his

  1273. church, there's so

  1274. many people who

  1275. claim to be

  1276. Christians, but

  1277. there's absolutely

  1278. no evidence in

  1279. their lives that

  1280. the Lord's ever

  1281. changed them or

  1282. the Lord has even

  1283. reeled them now.

  1284. Do you

  1285. understand that?

  1286. Do you

  1287. understand that if

  1288. a person is a

  1289. Christian, if you're

  1290. a Christian, you

  1291. will experience the

  1292. presence of the

  1293. Holy Spirit within

  1294. you.

  1295. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1296. tells us if the

  1297. Spirit of God does

1298. not live in us, we're

  1299. not Christians.

  1300. But Romans 8 also

1301. tells us that if the

  1302. Spirit of God lives

  1303. within us, he will

1304. so work in us to

  1305. give us this sense

  1306. notice that God is

  1307. our Heavenly Father

  1308. and enable us to

  1309. truly pray and

  1310. call Him Father.

  1311. That's the Spirit of

  1312. God living within us.

  1313. That's in addition to

  1314. what we said earlier,

1315. how He gives us the

  1316. desire and the

  1317. ability to please

  1318. God.

  1319. But think of this,

  1320. if the Holy Spirit's

  1321. living within us, when

  1322. we fail to please

  1323. God, the Spirit will

  1324. grieve us, inflict

  1325. guilt on us, and

1326. move in us to cause

  1327. us to want to

  1328. confess our sin to

  1329. God and be forgiven

1330. and be restored to a

  1331. right relationship with

  1332. Him.

  1333. That's what the Spirit

  1334. of God will do.

  1335. If we're Christians,

  1336. we, right now, we

  1337. should understand the

  1338. Spirit's presence and

1339. how He works in our

  1340. lives in some ways.

  1341. He's real.

  1342. If we're Christians,

  1343. our family members and

  1344. friends will see

  1345. evidence that Jesus

  1346. has changed my life.

1347. He is changing my life.

  1348. People will see, people

  1349. will just see the

  1350. presence of the Lord,

1351. the power of the Lord,

1352. in some way, not in a

1353. perfect way, but in some

  1354. way in your life.

  1355. If we're Christians, we

  1356. understand, we should

  1357. understand that saving

  1358. faith is continuing

  1359. faith.

1360. And it will be evident

  1361. for everyone to see.

  1362. You know, when Jesus

  1363. talked about things like

  1364. this, about how we

  1365. should live, He talked

1366. about how a tree should

1367. be known by its fruit.

  1368. People should be known

  1369. by the kind of

  1370. character quality fruit

  1371. fruit their lives put

  1372. forth.

  1373. Paul described such

  1374. spiritual fruit in terms

  1375. of character qualities

1376. like love and joy and

  1377. peace and patience and

  1378. kindness and goodness and

  1379. faithfulness and gentleness

  1380. and self-control.

1381. Paul also talked about in

  1382. Colossians 3 that a part of

  1383. Christian living involves

  1384. killing sin within us,

  1385. turning from it,

  1386. dying to things like

  1387. sexual immorality,

  1388. impurity, anger,

  1389. slander, obscene talk,

  1390. lying.

1391. See, the New Testament is

1392. telling us that being a

  1393. Christian involves far more

1394. than just saying, I trust

  1395. Jesus.

1396. Far more than just being

  1397. baptized, far more than

  1398. just coming to church.

1399. A Christian is someone who

1400. is growing by the grace of

  1401. God more and more,

  1402. developing Christ-like

  1403. character.

1404. Paul describes it this way,

1405. for those whom He foreknew,

1406. He also predestined to be

1407. conformed to the image of His

  1408. Son.

  1409. That's how Paul is

  1410. describing Christians.

  1411. Those He foreknew, God

  1412. predestined them to be

1413. conformed to the image of

  1414. His Son.

1415. And God does that through

1416. His Spirit who indwells us.

  1417. Hear this clearly.

1418. If your life does not

  1419. produce any evidence that

1420. the Bible says a Christian

1421. will show forth, then you

  1422. shouldn't consider yourself to

  1423. be a Christian.

1424. See, you don't get to define,

  1425. I don't get to define what a

  1426. Christian is.

  1427. Bible does that.

1428. God does that for us.

1429. And when we examine our

1430. lives in light of what the

  1431. Scripture says a Christian

1432. is and how a Christian lives,

1433. that's how we have to

  1434. evaluate ourselves.

1435. As we think about God being

1436. patient and giving people time

1437. to be saved, do you have

1438. family members and friends who

  1439. are not Christians?

1440. God is patiently waiting for them.

1441. God is giving them time to

  1442. repent and trust Jesus.

1443. Could it be that God is

1444. patiently waiting for you to be

1445. the one to share the gospel with

  1446. them?

1447. The second Sunday of this year,

  1448. I preached a message about us

1449. taking on the responsibility to

  1450. develop relationships with people

1451. who are not Christians who are

  1452. already in our lives.

1453. I passed out a paper that had

1454. concentric circles, people in your

  1455. family, your immediate family,

  1456. your extended family, classmates,

  1457. work associates, neighbors, friends,

1458. all these kind of things.

1459. And I asked you to think about

1460. just a few people who might fit in

  1461. that category who's not a

1462. Christian and to pray for them

1463. and develop a relationship with

1464. them and ask God to give you an

1465. opportunity to share the gospel

  1466. with them.

  1467. Have you done that?

1468. Are you still thinking of them,

1469. praying for them, working with

1470. them, looking for an opportunity to

1471. share the gospel with them?

1472. If you're not, I want to encourage

  1473. you to start today.

1474. Consider that God's being patient

1475. with that person that you love and

1476. you want to spend eternity with.

1477. Be thankful that God's being

  1478. patient, but get involved.

1479. Ask God how you should be involved.

1480. Share the gospel with them.

1481. All of us need to let it sink in

1482. this morning that while God is

1483. patient with us, his patience is not

  1484. unlimited.

  1485. Time is running out.

1486. We all need to listen to the Lord

1487. and respond to his patient call.

1488. And we need to do it right now.

1489. We need to do it as the writer to the

  1490. Hebrews warns us.

  1491. Final thought.

1492. This is from Hebrews chapter 3.

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

1493. See to it, brothers and sisters,

1494. that none of you has a sinful,

1495. unbelieving heart that turns away

  1496. from the living God.

1497. But encourage one another daily as

1498. long as it is called today,

1499. so that none of you may be hardened

  1500. by sin's deceitfulness.

1501. We have come to share in Christ,

1502. if indeed we hold our original

1503. conviction firmly to the end.

  1504. Let's pray.

  1505. Dear God,

1506. show us now how we should respond.

1507. Show us, Father, how we should

1508. demonstrate our gratitude for your

  1509. patience and your kindness.

1510. Help us, Father, not to presume upon it.

1511. And help us, Father, not to wait

  1512. until it's too late.

1513. In an attitude of prayer,

1514. you just do what God's calling you to do.

1515. I would be happy to pray with you.

1516. But you listen to God and obey Him.
