  1. How would you describe the structure of your home?

  2. Now, first thing that goes through your mind with a question like that is something like brick or vinyl, wood, but that's not what I'm talking about.

  3. I'm asking about something far more important, like the role of husbands and wives and parents and children.

  4. This is the second of a series on building a healthy home.

  5. We looked last week at the foundation for the healthy home.

  6. Today we're going to look at the first part of the structure of a healthy home and focus on the relationship between husbands and wives.

  7. We're going to turn to Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  8. Really it's verses 21 through 33.

  9. We're going to do this because this is the most extensive teaching in the New Testament on the role of husbands and wives.

  10. From Ephesians 5.21 through chapter 6 verse 9, this is what is commonly referred to as the household code.

  11. How to live together in a Christian home, various kinds of relationships.

  12. I want us to begin with verse 21 because I think it's really vitally important to get this in our minds before we move into the details about wives and husbands.

  13. Verse 21 talks about Christian relationships in general.

  14. Look at it.

  15. It's at the end of the paragraph in the ESV translation, in the New American Standard translation.

  16. I'm going to be reading from the ESV.

  17. The end of the paragraph, verse 21, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  18. Now, some translations in this room, the next paragraph about wives and husbands, it begins, submit yourself to one another.

  19. Or submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  20. The NIV actually has it as a stand-alone sentence, sort of like its own paragraph.

  21. And the reason for this is this verse 21 is what's called a bridge verse.

  22. It concludes the preceding paragraph that's been talking about what it means to live a spirit-filled or spirit-controlled life.

  23. It concludes what it means, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  24. And it also introduces the whole idea of Christian living in the home.

  25. If we really want to have the best possible relationships in the home, we've got to have this mentality, I'm in that home to serve you.

  26. Whether it be your wife, your husband, your parent, your child, whoever.

  27. However, the idea is that when a Christian is filled or controlled by the Holy Spirit, he or she will seek to serve their family members.

  28. And then Paul goes on beginning in verse 22 to describe how.

  29. But I think John MacArthur gets us started well with his comment on verse 21.

  30. Look at it with me.

  31. He says Christian marriages and families are to be radically different from those of the world.

  32. Let me pause here.

  33. What we're talking about is the Christian home.

  34. What we're talking about is God's design, even for today, for husband-wife relationships.

  35. Look on.

  36. The relationships between husbands and wives and parents and children is to be so bathed in humility, love, and mutual submission that the authority of husbands and parents, though exercised when necessary, become almost invisible.

  37. And the submission of wives and children is no more than acting in the spirit of gracious love.

  38. It's important that we begin here.

  39. Now let's move on to the instructions to wives in verses 22 through 24.

  40. Read with me.

  41. Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord.

  42. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.

  43. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

  44. Now, I can tell that the blood pressure has risen in some women out here right now.

  45. So let's go right to that word that got you all stirred up in verse 22.

  46. Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord.

  47. It's important that we understand what this word does and does not mean.

  48. As we go through this message this morning, you're going to detect that I'm trying to emphasize what the scripture does say and what it does not say.

  49. And I'm really going to focus in on the responsibilities of husbands, which is what the majority of this whole section is all about to begin with.

  50. It's important that we understand what the word submit here does not mean.

  51. Number one, it does not mean obey.

  52. In chapter 6, children are told to obey their parents.

  53. Slaves are told to obey their masters.

  54. Paul knows the word obey.

  55. He uses it in this big context.

  56. But he does not use the word obey to describe how wives should respond to their husbands.

  57. Number two, submission does not mean doing whatever a husband demands.

  58. A wife should not, hear this, a wife should never submit to the demand of a husband that would cause her to sin.

  59. Wives should have the same attitude as the apostles when they refused to submit to the Jewish authorities in Jerusalem who told them,

  60. do not preach about Jesus anymore.

  61. Do not talk about the resurrection of Jesus anymore.

  62. Therefore, they were the duly appointed authorities.

  63. But the apostles looked at them and said, we must obey God rather than men.

  64. That's in Acts 5.

  65. A wife should not submit to a husband who would abuse her or her children.

  66. Let me emphasize that.

  67. Women in this room,

  68. You do not have to remain in an abusive situation, you or your children,

  69. and think it's a part of your Christian responsibility.

  70. It is not.

  71. Paul did not submit himself to abuse by Roman authorities when possible.

  72. What he did is he exercised his rights as a Roman citizen.

  73. You can read in Acts 16,

  74. how Paul actually pitched a fit

  75. because he had been mistreated.

  76. He had been beaten without a trial, without any charges really.

  77. He was a Roman citizen.

  78. He demanded recourse and he got it by the officials.

  79. There was another case where Paul,

  80. he didn't just cave in.

  81. He spoke up, told him, I'm a Roman citizen.

  82. And in that society, a Roman citizen had certain rights

  83. and could not be abused,

  84. could not be beaten as they wanted to do him.

  85. So we have in Scripture

  86. examples of Christian leaders

  87. refusing to submit

  88. submit to anyone

  89. who might cause them,

  90. try to get them to sin

  91. or who was going to abuse them,

  92. harm them in any way.

  93. Submit does not mean that.

  94. Understand that clearly.

  95. Well, what does it mean?

  96. It means she must voluntarily

  97. choose

  98. to submit to her husband's leadership

  99. because the word for submit here

  100. means voluntary submission.

  101. It could be translated,

  102. wives, submit yourselves.

  103. I want every husband in this room to understand,

  104. you must not,

  105. you have no grounds,

  106. biblically speaking,

  107. to ever look at your wife and say,

  108. do you know it's your responsibility to submit to me?

  109. This would not be right,

  110. but she ought to just jack your jaw if you do that.

  111. That would not be right now.

  112. That would not be right.

  113. You can't abuse him just like he can't abuse you.

  114. But I just want to point out,

  115. some men

  116. like to quote this verse to their wife.

  117. Such a man is an idiot.

  118. He really is.

  119. And if that's you,

  120. you are an idiot with a capital I.

  121. If that's how you talk to your wife,

  122. I want you to hear that.

  123. This is part of a Christian's wife,

  124. this is part of a Christian's,

  125. Christian wife's responsibility

  126. to the Lord.

  127. Look at it.

  128. Wives, submit to your own husbands

  129. as to the Lord.

  130. She doesn't submit to her husband

  131. as if he's the Lord.

  132. She submits as a part of

  133. her commitment to Christ.

  134. A part of her being faithful to him

  135. is she follows these instructions.

  136. Some wives are married to men

  137. who are not worthy of her submission

  138. for various reasons.

  139. But ladies, don't jump up and say,

  140. that's me, okay?

  141. Don't embarrass him here.

  142. It wouldn't serve a good purpose.

  143. The truth is,

  144. he may know

  145. that he's not worthy.

  146. He may know.

  147. He may feel very uncomfortable right now

  148. because he knows of some of the ways

  149. he acts or talks to you.

  150. And he is not worthy of your submission.

  151. So here's what you need to do.

  152. Keep in mind

  153. that he is,

  154. that you're not ultimately

  155. submitting to him.

  156. Ultimately, according to this passage,

  157. you're doing this

  158. as if you're working for the Lord.

  159. And God will honor that

  160. as you are doing it unto him.

  161. Now, there's another reason given

  162. for why wives are to submit.

  163. Look at verse 23.

  164. For the husband is the head of the wife

  165. even as Christ is the head of the church,

  166. his body,

  167. and is himself its savior.

  168. God has assigned husbands

  169. with the responsibility

  170. of being the leader in the home.

  171. That's what the passage is saying.

  172. But this does not mean

  173. that the husband is superior

  174. to his wife in any way.

  175. Both men and women

  176. are created equally

  177. in the image of God.

  178. Most of you know that.

  179. As a reminder,

  180. look at what it says in Genesis 1.

  181. So God created man

  182. in his own image.

  183. In the image of God,

  184. he created him.

  185. Male and female,

  186. he created them.

  187. That tells us

  188. all human beings

  189. are of equal worth,

  190. value,

  191. dignity,

  192. respect,

  193. honor.

  194. All human beings.

  195. Everybody in your home

  196. created in the image of God.

  197. Therefore,

  198. it's wrong to think

  199. of the idea

  200. of being submissive

  201. as a put down

  202. to women,

  203. of women,

  204. as if they were somehow

  205. inferior.

  206. That is not

  207. even implied

  208. in what is being taught here.

  209. We're going to come back

  210. to this verse

  211. at the end of the message.

  212. Let's move on now

  213. to the responsibility

  214. of husbands.

  215. And this is where

  216. you have the lengthiest

  217. discussion.

  218. Look in verse 25.

  219. Husbands,

  220. love your wives

  221. as Christ loved the church

  222. and gave himself

  223. up for her

  224. that he might

  225. sanctify her

  226. having cleansed her

  227. by the washing

  228. of water with the word

  229. so that he might

  230. present the church

  231. to himself

  232. in splendor

  233. without spot

  234. or wrinkle

  235. or any such thing

  236. that she might be holy

  237. and without blemish.

  238. In the same way,

  239. husbands should love

  240. their wives

  241. as their own bodies.

  242. He who loves his wife

  243. loves himself.

  244. For no one ever hated

  245. his own flesh,

  246. his own body,

  247. but nourishes

  248. and cherishes it

  249. just as Christ

  250. does the church

  251. because we are members

  252. of his body.

  253. Therefore,

  254. this is what we looked at

  255. last week in detail.

  256. A man shall leave

  257. his father and mother

  258. and hold fast

  259. to his wife

  260. and the two shall become

  261. one flesh.

  262. This mystery

  263. is profound

  264. and I'm saying

  265. that it refers

  266. to Christ

  267. and the church.

  268. However,

  269. let each one of you

  270. love his wife

  271. as himself

  272. and let the wife

  273. see that she respects

  274. her husband.

  275. Now,

  276. I want you to note,

  277. men,

  278. there's a whole lot

  279. more ink

  280. being spilled here

  281. about you

  282. and the major point,

  283. I know you didn't miss it,

  284. you are to love

  285. your wife.

  286. The major point

  287. and what we just

  288. then read is

  289. make loving your wife

  290. your priority.

  291. Look at these examples.

  292. Look again,

  293. verse 25,

  294. husbands love your wives

  295. as Christ loved the church

  296. and gave himself up

  297. for her.

  298. Verse 28,

  299. in the same way,

  300. husbands should love

  301. their wives

  302. as their own bodies.

  303. He who loves his wife

  304. loves himself.

  305. Verse 33,

  306. the first part,

  307. however,

  308. let each of you

  309. love his wife

  310. as himself.

  311. When you go home today,

  312. men,

  313. I hope men and women,

  314. husbands,

  315. wives,

  316. you'll discuss this.

  317. But I hope men,

  318. you will be honest

  319. and your discussion

  320. will focus on

  321. what's most emphasized here,

  322. you loving your wife.

  323. note two examples

  324. of how husbands

  325. are to love their wives

  326. in these verses.

  327. Number one,

  328. a husband should love

  329. his wife

  330. the way Christ

  331. loved the church.

  332. What kind of love

  333. is that?

  334. Well,

  335. it's obvious.

  336. Jesus gave his life.

  337. We're talking about

  338. a self-giving love,

  339. a sacrificial love here.

  340. Giving your all.

  341. That's what Jesus did

  342. for the church.

  343. Look at the next point.

  344. A husband should also

  345. love his wife

  346. as he loves himself.

  347. Paul says,

  348. but Christ nourishes

  349. and cherishes the church

  350. because the church

  351. is a part of his body.

  352. One of the ways,

  353. some of the ways

  354. the New Testament

  355. describes the church

  356. and Jesus,

  357. he's the head,

  358. we're the body.

  359. Sometimes we're just

  360. simply called

  361. the body of Christ.

  362. Christ loves the church,

  363. his people,

  364. his body.

  365. He gave himself.

  366. That is our model.

  367. A husband should love

  368. his wife

  369. as he loves himself.

  370. A husband should love

  371. and take care of his wife

  372. just as he takes care

  373. of himself.

  374. And we do like

  375. to take care of ourselves,

  376. don't we guys?

  377. We take care of ourselves,

  378. we take care of our stuff.

  379. Some of you

  380. might have been late

  381. coming to church today.

  382. Some of you

  383. were close to being late.

  384. And I bet if we took a poll,

  385. it wasn't because

  386. the wife

  387. was running behind

  388. taking care of herself.

  389. There's a lot of men in here,

  390. you spend a whole lot of time

  391. taking care of yourself

  392. because that's just

  393. what you do.

  394. That's what we do

  395. as men.

  396. We look out for ourselves.

  397. Paul is not commending that.

  398. He's just talking about

  399. that's just the way

  400. that it is.

  401. But here's the real point.

  402. In a marriage relationship,

  403. he talks about,

  404. he quoted it.

  405. Well, we looked at last week.

  406. When you get married,

  407. husband and wife,

  408. you're no longer two,

  409. but one.

  410. That's God's design.

  411. We become one flesh.

  412. And so,

  413. in taking care of our wife,

  414. like we take care of ourself,

  415. you see how it fits.

  416. We're one.

  417. And just as we take care

  418. of ourselves,

  419. we take care of her.

  420. Now, let's apply this.

  421. Let's apply what Paul says

  422. about a husband loving your wife.

  423. Men,

  424. what would you do

  425. if you woke up in the night

  426. tonight

  427. and you heard

  428. what sounded like

  429. somebody trying to

  430. break in your back door?

  431. What would you do?

  432. You wouldn't punch your wife

  433. and tell her

  434. to go check it out,

  435. would you?

  436. No.

  437. At least you wouldn't admit it.

  438. What you would do

  439. if you were any kind of a man

  440. is you'd get your gun,

  441. which you ought to have,

  442. and you would go

  443. and check it out

  444. and you would tell her

  445. to stay here

  446. and call 911

  447. and get the other gun.

  448. Because if he gets through me,

  449. you're going to take care of him.

  450. Right?

  451. That's what you do, men.

  452. There's not a man in this room,

  453. I don't believe,

  454. well, there may be,

  455. I've seen one or two

  456. squirrely guys here

  457. that you might would do this.

  458. There's not a man in this room

  459. who would not willingly

  460. give up his life

  461. to protect his wife.

  462. That's just what men do.

  463. That's what men,

  464. since the beginning of time,

  465. have been taught to do.

  466. And if you don't hear that

  467. anywhere else,

  468. you're going to hear it today.

  469. That's what you,

  470. if you're a man,

  471. what you're supposed to do.

  472. Young guys,

  473. you are supposed

  474. to take care of your wife.

  475. She's supposed to be first.

  476. You're supposed to do

  477. whatever it takes

  478. to take care of her,

  479. provide for her,

  480. protect her.

  481. That's your God-assigned

  482. responsibility.

  483. But let me ask husbands,

  484. you'll die for her.

  485. Are you willing

  486. to give up a ball game,

  487. a hunting trip,

  488. or a golf outing,

  489. in order to do

  490. something special

  491. with your wife

  492. that you know

  493. she really wants to do

  494. at the time

  495. you had the other thing planned?

  496. Do you?

  497. Are you willing

  498. to give up an evening

  499. or a Saturday

  500. to take care

  501. of your little children

  502. and let your wife

  503. have the day

  504. or the night off?

  505. do you?

  506. We're not talking

  507. about hypothetical things.

  508. What do you do

  509. to show your wife

  510. your love,

  511. sacrificial love,

  512. self-giving love,

  513. like the Word of God

  514. tells us we're supposed

  515. to do?

  516. One of the best examples

  517. I've ever heard of

  518. of a husband loving his wife

  519. as Christ loved the church

  520. and as he loves his own body

  521. was demonstrated

  522. by the theologian

  523. Wayne Grudem.

  524. A lot of you know him,

  525. even have his books.

  526. We've studied them here.

  527. Several years ago

  528. he moved from Chicago

  529. to Arizona

  530. all for his wife.

  531. He described the process

  532. in an interview.

  533. I want to read it to you.

  534. It's not going to be

  535. on the screen.

  536. I'm going to read it quick

  537. and you listen carefully.

  538. Grudem says,

  539. We moved to Phoenix Seminary

  540. in Arizona in 2001

  541. primarily because

  542. of Margaret's health.

  543. She had been experiencing

  544. chronic pain

  545. after an auto accident

  546. a number of years earlier

  547. and we found

  548. that the pain

  549. was aggravated

  550. by cold and humidity.

  551. Well, the Chicago area

  552. is cold in the winter

  553. and humid in the summer.

  554. After a couple of trips

  555. to Arizona,

  556. which is hot and dry,

  557. we realized that Margaret

  558. felt much better there.

  559. So I phoned the academic dean

  560. at Phoenix Seminary

  561. and asked if there might be

  562. possibly a job opportunity

  563. there for me.

  564. He says,

  565. I'm thankful to the Lord

  566. that when we were making

  567. a decision about

  568. whether to move to Phoenix,

  569. on the very day

  570. we were talking about it

  571. and praying about it,

  572. I came to Ephesians 5.28

  573. in my regularly scheduled

  574. Bible reading

  575. and the Lord used this verse

  576. strongly in my own

  577. decision process.

  578. Here's the verse.

  579. In the same way, husbands,

  580. in the same way,

  581. husbands should love

  582. their wives as Christ's,

  583. as their own bodies.

  584. He who loves his wife

  585. loves himself.

  586. Grudem says,

  587. after reading that,

  588. I thought it was important

  589. for me to move

  590. for the sake of Margaret's

  591. physical body,

  592. her physical health.

  593. Now, what Grudem did not say

  594. in the interview

  595. is that when he moved

  596. from Chicago,

  597. he moved from

  598. one of the leading

  599. theological schools

  600. in this country,

  601. Trinity Evangelical

  602. Divinity School.

  603. He moved from there.

  604. He had arrived

  605. professionally

  606. by being on the faculty

  607. there.

  608. But he moved

  609. to Phoenix Seminary,

  610. a place that no one

  611. had ever heard of,

  612. a place that was

  613. just sort of like

  614. in the big scheme

  615. of things

  616. on the backside

  617. of nowhere.

  618. Grudem's leaving

  619. Trinity to go to Phoenix

  620. would be like

  621. Dabo Swinney

  622. stepping down

  623. as head coach

  624. at Clemson

  625. to go to North

  626. Greenville University

  627. as head coach.

  628. Nothing wrong

  629. with North Greenville,

  630. but it's a big fall

  631. from Clemson

  632. to North Greenville

  633. when it comes to football.

  634. I say all that to say,

  635. Grudem is an example

  636. of how husbands

  637. are to love their wives.

  638. It's self-giving.

  639. It's sacrificial.

  640. It's do whatever's best

  641. for her kind of love.

  642. Now with this understanding

  643. about husbands

  644. are to love their wives,

  645. we can now get

  646. a better understanding

  647. of what it means

  648. for a husband

  649. to be the head

  650. of the wife

  651. and the leader

  652. of his home

  653. that we started out

  654. in verses 23 and 24.

  655. A husband's leadership

  656. must never be bossy,

  657. demanding,

  658. threatening,

  659. intimidating,

  660. those kind of things.

  661. Christian leaders

  662. don't lead

  663. by driving people.

  664. A husband's leadership

  665. is more like

  666. taking his wife

  667. by the hand

  668. and lovingly

  669. guiding her.

  670. A Christian's husband,

  671. put it another way,

  672. is servant leadership.

  673. That's how Jesus described

  674. Christian leadership

  675. in general.

  676. Look at me,

  677. look at this passage

  678. if you would,

  679. from Mark 10.

  680. And Jesus called them

  681. to him and said to him,

  682. talking to his disciples,

  683. you know that those

  684. who are considered

  685. rulers of the Gentiles

  686. lord it over them

  687. and their great ones

  688. exercise authority

  689. over them,

  690. but it shall not

  691. be so among you.

  692. But whoever would be

  693. great among you

  694. must be your servant

  695. and whoever would be

  696. first among you

  697. must be slave of all.

  698. For even the son of man,

  699. talking about himself,

  700. came not to be served,

  701. but to serve

  702. and to give his life

  703. as a ransom for many.

  704. I want you to understand,

  705. servant leadership

  706. is not passive leadership.

  707. Servant leadership

  708. is not an unwillingness

  709. to step up

  710. and do what you're

  711. supposed to do.

  712. Servant leadership

  713. is real leadership.

  714. It is effective leadership.

  715. In fact,

  716. there's no better example

  717. of an effective leader

  718. than Jesus Christ.

  719. What he started

  720. 2,000 years ago

  721. in his earthly ministry

  722. continues on and on.

  723. We're here

  724. because of the effectiveness

  725. of his leadership.

  726. What will it look like

  727. when husbands leave

  728. and wives submit

  729. as we're looking at

  730. this morning?

  731. Well, it's going to vary

  732. from home to home.

  733. We're all different.

  734. Men in this room,

  735. we're all different.

  736. Wives are all different.

  737. And each couple in here,

  738. we have our own uniqueness.

  739. So it's going to vary.

  740. But here's what it doesn't mean.

  741. It does not mean

  742. that the husband

  743. makes all the decisions.

  744. I want you to understand.

  745. A Christian husband

  746. fulfilling his responsibility

  747. as the leader of the home

  748. does not make

  749. all the decisions.

  750. Ideally,

  751. husbands and wives

  752. need to come

  753. to mutual decisions.

  754. And listen to this.

  755. And the one

  756. with the most expertise

  757. about any given matter

  758. should take the lead

  759. in that matter.

  760. A wise husband

  761. leader

  762. knows when to listen

  763. to his wife.

  764. Knows that she knows

  765. some things

  766. that he doesn't.

  767. Knows that she has

  768. more experience

  769. or wisdom

  770. than he does

  771. about certain things.

  772. Lisa and I

  773. have been married

  774. for almost 41 years.

  775. We got married

  776. when we were 10.

  777. In all these years

  778. we have never made

  779. a major decision

  780. that we did not agree on.

  781. In some decisions

  782. Lisa has

  783. had the most

  784. input

  785. because

  786. she knew more.

  787. She had the more

  788. or the most expertise

  789. in the matter.

  790. And then sometimes

  791. she lets me decide.

  792. You're a little bit slow.

  793. Now here's

  794. an important point.

  795. We're talking about

  796. the way you

  797. make decisions

  798. together.

  799. When a decision

  800. is made

  801. it is vitally

  802. important

  803. that you consider

  804. that a

  805. we

  806. W-E

  807. we

  808. decision.

  809. If it turns

  810. out well

  811. we

  812. succeeded.

  813. If it turns

  814. out bad

  815. we

  816. fail.

  817. Never

  818. blame

  819. your spouse

  820. when you

  821. make bad

  822. decisions

  823. as a couple.

  824. Never

  825. throw it up

  826. later on

  827. the bad

  828. decision

  829. that he

  830. or she

  831. made.

  832. there's

  833. a lot

  834. of

  835. wives

  836. in this

  837. room

  838. that

  839. your

  840. main

  841. frustration

  842. is

  843. your

  844. husband

  845. won't

  846. make

  847. a

  848. decision.

  849. It's

  850. not that

  851. he

  852. wants

  853. to be

  854. the

  855. boss

  856. he

  857. won't

  858. make

  859. any

  860. decision.

  861. We're

  862. going to

  863. address

  864. that

  865. a little

  866. bit

  867. more

  868. in a

  869. moment.

  870. But I

  871. want to

  872. ask

  873. you

  874. did

  875. your

  876. husband

  877. used

  878. to

  879. make

  880. more

  881. decisions

  882. try

  883. harder

  884. but you

  885. always

  886. blamed

  887. him

  888. when

  889. something

  890. went

  891. wrong?

  892. you

  893. always

  894. threw

  895. it

  896. back

  897. up

  898. to

  899. him

  900. a

  901. year

  902. two

  903. years

  904. later

  905. about

  906. that

  907. which

  908. went

  909. wrong?

  910. It

  911. may

  912. be

  913. he

  914. doesn't

  915. make

  916. the

  917. decisions

  918. that

  919. he

  920. used

  921. to

  922. make

  923. because

  924. he

  925. just

  926. doesn't

  927. want

  928. to

  929. listen

  930. to

  931. the

  932. complaining

  933. and

  934. the

  935. blame

  936. anymore.

  937. And

  938. it

  939. could

  940. go

  941. both

  942. ways.

  943. It

  944. can

  945. go

  946. both

  947. ways.

  948. In

  949. a

  950. Christian

  951. home

  952. God

  953. intends

  954. for

  955. wives

  956. to

  957. submit

  958. to

  959. her

  960. husband's

  961. loving

  962. leadership

  963. as a

  964. part of

  965. her

  966. commitment

  967. to

  968. the

  969. Lord.

  970. Wives

  971. are you

  972. seeking

  973. to do

  974. this?

  975. If

  976. not

  977. what

  978. needs

  979. to

  980. change?

  981. Are

  982. you

  983. fighting

  984. your

  985. husband

  986. for the

  987. role

  988. of the

  989. primary

  990. leader

  991. to be

  992. the

  993. primary

  994. leader

  995. of

  996. your

  997. home?

  998. Is

  999. that

  1000. the

  1001. problem?

  1002. I

  1003. want

  1004. you

  1005. to

  1006. understand

  1007. I

  1008. tried

  1009. to

  1010. point

  1011. out

  1012. what

  1013. submission

  1014. does

  1015. and

  1016. does

  1017. not

  1018. mean

  1019. but

  1020. no

  1021. matter

  1022. how

  1023. you

  1024. cut

  1025. it

  1026. God's

  1027. design

  1028. is

  1029. for

  1030. the

  1031. husband

  1032. to

  1033. be

  1034. the

  1035. loving

  1036. servant

  1037. leader

  1038. of

  1039. the

  1040. home.

  1041. Don't

  1042. fight

  1043. that.

  1044. That's

  1045. not

  1046. archaic.

  1047. The

  1048. word

  1049. of

  1050. God

  1051. is

  1052. not

  1053. changed.

  1054. But

  1055. at the

  1056. same

  1057. time

  1058. wives

  1059. don't

  1060. be

  1061. a

  1062. doormat.

  1063. Don't

  1064. take

  1065. abuse.

  1066. Don't

  1067. do

  1068. what

  1069. you

  1070. know

  1071. is

  1072. wrong.

  1073. Encourage

  1074. your

  1075. husband.

  1076. Encourage

  1077. your

  1078. husband

  1079. especially

  1080. if he

  1081. needs

  1082. encouragement

  1083. to lead

  1084. to make

  1085. decisions.

  1086. Encourage

  1087. him as

  1088. you follow

  1089. his

  1090. leadership.

  1091. It may

  1092. be you

  1093. have to

  1094. take

  1095. small

  1096. baby

  1097. steps

  1098. to start

  1099. with

  1100. and get

  1101. him

  1102. to start

  1103. leading

  1104. help

  1105. him

  1106. to do

  1107. that.

  1108. support

  1109. him

  1110. with

  1111. your

  1112. gifts

  1113. and

  1114. talents

  1115. and

  1116. wisdom.

  1117. And

  1118. men

  1119. don't

  1120. be

  1121. intimidated

  1122. by your

  1123. wife's

  1124. abilities

  1125. especially

  1126. in the

  1127. areas where

  1128. she just

  1129. knows

  1130. more,

  1131. has more

  1132. experience,

  1133. just wiser

  1134. than you.

  1135. Look at

  1136. that as

  1137. a gift

  1138. from

  1139. God

  1140. to you.

  1141. Think

  1142. about

  1143. husbands

  1144. and

  1145. wives.

  1146. When we

  1147. come together,

  1148. we're

  1149. married,

  1150. we become

  1151. one flesh,

  1152. her

  1153. strengths,

  1154. his

  1155. strengths,

  1156. they become

  1157. our

  1158. strengths.

  1159. Don't

  1160. be jealous,

  1161. be thankful

  1162. because she

  1163. makes you

  1164. better.

  1165. He

  1166. makes you

  1167. better.

  1168. That's the

  1169. way God

  1170. designed it

  1171. to be.

  1172. Listen

  1173. to him.

  1174. Listen

  1175. to her.

  1176. Lead

  1177. together.

  1178. Husbands,

  1179. are you

  1180. seeking to

  1181. be this

  1182. kind of

  1183. leader?

  1184. What we're

  1185. looking at

  1186. this morning,

  1187. if not,

  1188. what needs

  1189. to change

  1190. about what

  1191. you're

  1192. doing?

  1193. Are you

  1194. too

  1195. passive?

  1196. Are you

  1197. too

  1198. uninvolved?

  1199. That is

  1200. one of the

  1201. primary

  1202. problems in

  1203. a lot of

  1204. marriages.

  1205. It's not

  1206. that the

  1207. husband's

  1208. dictatorial.

  1209. It's not

  1210. that he

  1211. wants to

  1212. do

  1213. everything,

  1214. make all

  1215. decisions.

  1216. A lot

  1217. of the

  1218. problems

  1219. is men

  1220. are lazy.

  1221. Men

  1222. are out

  1223. of touch.

  1224. Men

  1225. are distant.

  1226. Men are

  1227. just selfish,

  1228. taking care of

  1229. themselves,

  1230. and they

  1231. expect the

  1232. wife to do

  1233. all the

  1234. things that

  1235. have to be

  1236. done with

  1237. the children.

  1238. They expect

  1239. the wife to

  1240. do everything

  1241. to take care

  1242. of the

  1243. home,

  1244. and in

  1245. some

  1246. situations,

  1247. pay all

  1248. the bills

  1249. and do

  1250. everything.

  1251. If you're

  1252. that way as a

  1253. husband,

  1254. you're a

  1255. bum.

  1256. You are

  1257. failing your

  1258. God-given

  1259. responsibility to

  1260. be the

  1261. spiritual,

  1262. servant,

  1263. loving,

  1264. leader who

  1265. leads in

  1266. your home.

  1267. Now,

  1268. of course,

  1269. some men

  1270. are too

  1271. harsh,

  1272. too

  1273. dictatorial,

  1274. too stupid

  1275. to know they

  1276. need to

  1277. listen and

  1278. not say

  1279. something all

  1280. the time,

  1281. not make all

  1282. the decisions.

  1283. If that's

  1284. you,

  1285. confess what

  1286. sin needs to

  1287. be confessed

  1288. to God and

  1289. to your wife

  1290. and maybe your

  1291. children.

  1292. talk to

  1293. your spouse,

  1294. talk with

  1295. your spouse,

  1296. dialogue,

  1297. renew some

  1298. commitments,

  1299. take on

  1300. your God-assigned

  1301. responsibilities.

  1302. Husbands and

  1303. wives,

  1304. what we've

  1305. looked at is

  1306. the God-designed

  1307. structure of a

  1308. Christian home.

  1309. accept it,

  1310. don't fight

  1311. against it,

  1312. accept it,

  1313. and do your

  1314. part to make

  1315. it a home that

  1316. pleases God,

  1317. your spouse,

  1318. and yourself.

  1319. Pray for your

  1320. spouse to do

  1321. the same.

  1322. Don't preach to

  1323. your spouse.

  1324. Pray for your

  1325. spouse,

  1326. and pray for

  1327. yourself.

  1328. Ask God to

  1329. help you to do

  1330. your part to

  1331. make living in

  1332. your home,

  1333. a peaceful,

  1334. pleasant,

  1335. joyful experience

  1336. for everybody

  1337. involved.

  1338. You want,

  1339. as a loving

  1340. leader,

  1341. men,

  1342. you want

  1343. it to be that

  1344. way for your

  1345. spouse.

  1346. Wives,

  1347. you want it

  1348. to be that

  1349. way for your

  1350. husband.

  1351. Talk to God,

  1352. seek His

  1353. help,

  1354. talk to each

  1355. other,

  1356. and work

  1357. to either

  1358. build or

  1359. rebuild

  1360. this God-given

  1361. structure for

  1362. your husband-wife

  1363. relationship.

  1364. Let's pray

  1365. together.

  1366. Dear God,

  1367. show us how we

  1368. should respond now

  1369. to what you've

  1370. said through your

  1371. word and your

  1372. spirit to us.

  1373. Father, for some

  1374. people, they

  1375. have been

  1376. affirmed because

  1377. they're seeking to

  1378. do it your way.

  1379. No one does it

  1380. perfectly.

  1381. But Father, I pray

  1382. that you will just

  1383. affirm and

  1384. encourage those who

  1385. are seeking to be

  1386. faithful to you and

  1387. their spouse and

  1388. their family in all

  1389. this.

  1390. Father, for those who

  1391. have failed for

  1392. whatever reason,

  1393. maybe never started,

  1394. maybe started, but

  1395. stopped, convict them,

  1396. to come back to

  1397. you in a renewed

  1398. commitment, to seek

  1399. your help to change,

  1400. to humble themselves

  1401. before their spouse,

  1402. and seek forgiveness,

  1403. seek help, seek

  1404. dialogue.

  1405. Father, I pray for

  1406. every single person in

  1407. this room.

1408. Help them to see that

  1409. this is what you

  1410. intend for husband-wife

  1411. relationships.

1412. Help them to seek to

  1413. be that kind of

  1414. husband, that kind of

  1415. wife.

1416. And help them, dear God,

1417. to only look for a

  1418. husband or wife who

  1419. will accept your word

1420. and seek your help to

  1421. put it into practice.

1422. show us all how to

  1423. respond.

1424. And Lord, if there are

1425. people in this room who

  1426. are not Christians, help

1427. them to see that this

  1428. can never take place

1429. until they come to know

1430. Jesus as their Lord and

  1431. Savior and are filled

  1432. with His Spirit.

  1433. Father, help Christians in

1434. this room to know that

1435. this will never happen if

1436. they're not seeking to be

  1437. sensitive to the Holy

1438. Spirit and obedient to His

  1439. leadership, seeking your

1440. help to do the kind of

  1441. things necessary day in

1442. and day out to have the

  1443. healthy home you intend

  1444. for them to have.

1445. So just in an attitude of

  1446. prayer, let's all just

1447. listen to the Lord and

  1448. respond to Him.

1449. I'd be happy to pray with

1450. you here at the front

1451. during this time if you

1452. want to come as musicians

1453. play just for the next

  1454. few minutes.

  1455. Amen.
