  1. This number of graduates is the largest we've had in several years.

  2. When I first saw the list, I started thinking about what many Christian leaders have been saying for the past 15 years or so

  3. about the religious beliefs of most high school students in this country.

  4. And as I'm going to mention a little bit later on, what we're going to look at is the predominant view of adults in this country as well.

  5. What we're going to see is disturbing.

  6. About three years ago, I preached a message that described these beliefs of Americans in general now under the heading moralistic therapeutic deism.

  7. If you remember that, would you raise your hand?

  8. Okay, there's a few. Good.

  9. Maybe it's not so good that more hands didn't go up, but I'm going to look on the positive side.

  10. This phrase, moralistic therapeutic deism, was coined by a sociologist, Christian Smith, from the University of North Carolina.

  11. In 2005, or their research was compiled and published in 2005, after they had conducted over 3,000 interviews with American teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17.

  12. Now, in doing this research, listening to these young people explain what they believe or didn't believe,

  13. Christian Smith and his team of researchers came up with what they call the mainstream belief system of American teenagers.

  14. This is not describing any denomination, any particular group.

  15. It's just what they came up with after all these interviews, and they call it the mainstream belief system of American teenagers.

  16. Here are the five statements that describe those beliefs.

  17. Number one, a God, little g, exists, who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth.

  18. Number two, God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions.

  19. Number three, the central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself.

  20. Number four, God does not need to be particularly involved in one's life except when God is needed to resolve a problem.

  21. Number five, good people go to heaven when they die.

  22. Now, here's one summary statement of those five points.

  23. God exists to meet my needs and help me be a nice person who feels good about myself.

  24. When I put that list of one through five on the screen, some of you probably scratched your head and thought, what's wrong with that?

  25. I hope this summary statement helps you to see what's wrong with that.

  26. Now, do you know where Smith and his team said that teenagers learned these beliefs?

  27. They learned these beliefs from their parents and their churches.

  28. But they explained it was not that their parents actually taught these things.

  29. It was not that any church had this as a part of their basic doctrine.

  30. They said it's what they saw.

  31. What they saw in their parents.

  32. Just how little their parents actually believed and put into practice in their daily lives.

  33. And concerning the church, they observed how their churches had tried to blend in with the culture of the world.

  34. And so, these young people, not just yes and no answers, but in discussing their beliefs,

  35. what they had heard, what they had seen, as they put it all together.

  36. They came up with this moralistic, therapeutic deism as being the predominant belief system of American teenagers and American adults.

  37. That's one thing that I'll follow up to these studies.

  38. Many Christian leaders have pointed out, pointed to a lot of different evidences.

  39. That this is the predominant view of Americans today.

  40. And disturbingly, a lot of people in churches, a lot of professing Christians think this way, believe this way as well.

  41. But what I want us to look at this morning is, this is a belief system that is not found in Scripture.

  42. And if it's not found in Scripture, it cannot be true.

  43. I think this is something worthy of us interrupting our series on the family to pay close attention this morning.

  44. I want us, as we go through this message, to...

  45. I've got... let me put it this way.

  46. I've got three reasons for this message.

  47. Number one, I want to make sure that no one here believes this false teaching.

  48. I want to make sure that you, when you leave here as high school graduates going off somewhere,

  49. you didn't hear this garbage from this pulpit.

  50. You didn't hear it anywhere in our church, many of our other pastors, Sunday school teachers.

  51. And I don't think you heard it from any parent.

  52. But I want to make sure this morning that no one believes the kind of things that I've mentioned and will look at.

  53. Number two, every Christian needs to be aware of this and be able to spot this false teaching.

  54. Don't be misled by it.

  55. Number three, every parent, grandparent, and Sunday school teacher needs to make sure that you don't unintentionally teach it by your words or your actions.

  56. This is needed.

  57. I've been a pastor for a long time now.

  58. I've been around a lot of Christians in a lot of churches.

  59. And including our own church from time to time.

  60. I hear church members say things along the line of,

  61. I hope I'm good enough to get into heaven.

  62. I even heard it said one time by one person,

  63. I think I've earned my place in heaven.

  64. I'm not exaggerating.

  65. Church people,

  66. people who attend Pickens First Baptist Church,

  67. sometimes think this way and make statements like this.

  68. We need to hear this.

  69. We need to be clear.

  70. Let's start.

  71. Number one,

  72. the Bible does not teach the moralistic idea that God simply wants us to be good.

  73. The Christian faith is about much more than helping people be good.

  74. The false teaching of moralism says this.

  75. I'm going to use the survey of Smith's five statements here.

  76. Number two,

  77. God wants people to be good,

  78. nice,

  79. and fair to each other as taught in the Bible and by most world religions.

  80. Number five,

  81. good people go to heaven when they die.

  82. The Bible does not teach that.

  83. Now,

  84. I'm sure some of you say and scratch your head and said,

  85. are we not supposed to be good?

  86. Obviously,

  87. we need to be as good as we can.

  88. The gospel of Jesus Christ does come with moral commands and expectations.

  89. The problem is,

  90. we can't be good on our own.

  91. We can never be good enough for God to accept us as his children just by the way that we live.

  92. The Bible clearly teaches that we cannot live a morally pure or upright life on our own.

  93. The first point of the gospel is that we are sinners by nature and by choice.

  94. We naturally choose to live life our way, my way, as opposed to God's way.

  95. Children are the best examples of this.

  96. You know,

  97. I think about when I try to explain this point,

  98. there's no better way to explain it than to say,

  99. look at children.

  100. No one teaches their child to disobey their parent.

  101. Nobody in their right mind will teach their child to disobey their parent.

  102. No one teaches a child to be just selfish,

  103. to take things away from another child,

  104. to hit another child over the head with their toy in the nursery, even in church.

  105. No one has to teach a child how to tell a lie to avoid being punished.

  106. Children just are born into this world with a sinful nature,

  107. with a tendency,

  108. look out for me.

  109. And as they grow and mature,

  110. can make their own decisions,

  111. even as little fellas all the way up,

  112. you see that they choose to be selfish.

  113. Now,

  114. the idea that everyone is a sinner before God

  115. does not mean that everyone is purely evil.

  116. Some people mistakenly think

  117. that when the Bible talks about

  118. we've all sinned,

  119. come short of the glory of God,

  120. some people have the idea that

  121. the Bible is saying we're all just

  122. purely evil people.

  123. That is not

  124. what it means when the Bible talks about

  125. sin in our lives.

  126. Everyone is created in the image of God.

  127. Every human being

  128. is created in the image of God.

  129. And we have an inner sense of right and wrong.

  130. Some people refer to it as the conscience.

  131. The Apostle Paul talks about it in Romans chapter 2.

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  132. God has put it within us.

  133. This basic moral law.

  134. This basic understanding of what is right

  135. and what is wrong.

  136. And here's how it comes out.

  137. Let's go back to children.

  138. Some children are more compliant than others.

  139. If you've got more than one child,

  140. probably you had one

  141. that you could just sort of look at.

  142. He or she would straighten up.

  143. Or you could have had two like me

  144. that you had to horse whip

  145. to get their attention

  146. to make them do anything.

  147. Now, for any liberals to worry about that,

  148. I'm just, I'm joking.

  149. I did whip them, spank them.

  150. I would do it again if they needed it.

  151. If they were little, I'm talking about.

  152. They could whip me now, size-wise.

  153. But you know what I'm talking about.

  154. Adults are the same way.

  155. Some people in this room

  156. just do more what's good and kind.

  157. Some people just are more self-giving

  158. than others by nature.

  159. It's not because they're Christians.

  160. So, just look around.

  161. In your family, among your friends,

  162. there are varying degrees of goodness

  163. and evil.

  164. The problem that the gospel addresses

  165. is that we're sinners

  166. who cannot be good as God defines goodness.

  167. And that's the point.

  168. Some of us are good

  169. in comparison to others.

  170. But we cannot be good

  171. as God defines goodness

  172. because God's standard is perfection.

  173. We're talking about almighty God,

  174. holy God.

  175. His standard is perfection.

  176. If we want to be good

  177. or do what is right

  178. in a way that pleases God

  179. on our own,

  180. we've got to be perfect.

  181. Let me show you a verse of scripture

  182. that makes this real clear.

  183. James is writing a letter to Christians.

  184. He's trying to help them understand

  185. they cannot earn their salvation

  186. by their good works.

  187. He says,

  188. for whoever keeps the whole law

  189. and yet stumbles at just one point

  190. is guilty of breaking all of it.

  191. You might be a very good person

  192. and you know

  193. what the scripture teaches

  194. about how you ought to live.

  195. And for the most part,

  196. you do that.

  197. You're conscientiously doing that.

  198. But are you perfect?

  199. If you ever break one

  200. of God's commands,

  201. you are guilty

  202. of being a lawbreaker

  203. before God.

  204. So even the best person you know

  205. is not perfect.

  206. Well, therefore,

  207. we all stand before God

  208. as sinners,

  209. guilty of breaking God's laws,

  210. not living up

  211. to his standards of perfection.

  212. Listen,

  213. that's where we all are.

  214. That's how we enter the world.

  215. That's how we are

  216. as we grow up

  217. and make choices.

  218. Well, the penalty for our sin,

  219. the scripture says,

  220. is death,

  221. which ultimately means

  222. eternal separation

  223. from God in hell.

  224. This is the bad news

  225. of the Bible.

  226. You know something?

  227. The Bible clearly presents this.

  228. The Bible writers,

  229. they care enough about

  230. human beings

  231. to tell the truth.

  232. This is a reality.

  233. We're born with a sinful nature.

  234. We make sinful choices.

  235. The penalty for sin is death.

  236. And that's all of us.

  237. And that's the bad news

  238. of the Bible

  239. that we all need to listen,

  240. understand,

  241. accept.

  242. You cannot

  243. wish it away.

  244. The good news

  245. is that God loves us.

  246. And he has provided a way

  247. for us to be

  248. forgiven

  249. of our sins.

  250. He's provided a way

  251. for us not only

  252. to be forgiven,

  253. but to actually become

  254. his children.

  255. And when we're forgiven,

  256. we become

  257. his children.

  258. He puts his spirit

  259. in us

  260. and that's how

  261. we are able

  262. to live

  263. a morally

  264. pure life

  265. that will please

  266. God

  267. and be satisfying

  268. to us.

  269. Here's what God

  270. has done

  271. more specifically.

  272. God sent his son

  273. Jesus

  274. into this world

  275. for the purpose

  276. of saving us.

  277. Jesus lived a perfect,

  278. morally

  279. pure life

  280. throughout his time

  281. here on earth.

  282. He lived the perfect life

  283. that we couldn't live.

  284. And then Jesus died

  285. on the cross

  286. as our substitute

  287. according to the plan

  288. of God

  289. to pay the penalty

  290. for our sins.

  291. He died in our place,

  292. suffered the punishment

  293. that we deserve

  294. so that we wouldn't

  295. have to

  296. experience that punishment.

  297. And then God

  298. raised Jesus

  299. from the dead

  300. to prove

  301. he's accepted

  302. Jesus' sacrifice.

  303. That Jesus is

  304. who he said he was.

  305. He did what he said

  306. he came to do.

  307. He came back to live.

  308. He's alive today

  309. in heaven.

  310. One day he'll come back

  311. to this world

  312. the scripture tells us.

  313. Now,

  314. this is the basic

  315. gospel good news

  316. of God message

  317. from the Bible.

  318. But that's not all

  319. the Bible says

  320. about our relationship

  321. with God,

  322. being right with God.

  323. We've got to respond

  324. to this gospel.

  325. We've got to respond

  326. to what Christ

  327. has done for us

  328. in order to experience

  329. God's gracious salvation.

  330. The apostle Paul

  331. summarized it

  332. like this.

  333. He was talking

  334. about how he had

  335. traveled the world

  336. and what he had

  337. been preaching.

  338. He says,

  339. I have declared

  340. to both Jews

  341. and Greeks

  342. and in his mind

  343. that's everybody.

  344. There's two kinds

  345. of people in the world.

  346. There's Jews

  347. and Greeks.

  348. I have declared

  349. to both Jews

  350. and Greeks

  351. that they must turn

  352. to God

  353. in repentance

  354. and have faith

  355. in our Lord Jesus.

  356. Paul is saying

  357. that the way

  358. of salvation

  359. is open to anyone

  360. who will repent

  361. of their sin.

  362. Admit that you have

  363. failed God.

  364. Change your mind

  365. about living

  366. your selfish way,

  367. your disobedient way.

  368. Sort of like

  369. you make a debout face.

  370. You turn from your sin

  371. and you put your trust

  372. in Jesus

  373. as your Savior

  374. and your Lord.

  375. We're not talking

  376. about just believing

  377. the Bible.

  378. Most people

  379. in this room,

  380. I'm going to guess,

  381. you believe

  382. John 3.16.

  383. For God so loved

  384. the world,

  385. that he gave

  386. his only son,

  387. that whoever believes

  388. in him will not perish,

  389. but have eternal life.

  390. Most people

  391. in this room,

  392. you believe.

  393. That's in the Bible.

  394. I believe it.

  395. But do you believe

  396. it just like you believe

  397. a lot of facts

  398. that you read

  399. in history books?

  400. Or do you believe

  401. in this Jesus,

  402. this son of God,

  403. personally,

  404. that he died

  405. for you

  406. to pay the penalty

  407. for your sin?

  408. Are you trusting him,

  409. counting on him,

  410. depending on him

  411. to be right with God?

  412. Are you truly

  413. honoring him

  414. as the Lord

  415. of your life,

  416. the ultimate leader

  417. of your life?

  418. When we choose

  419. to live life

  420. God's way,

  421. when we choose

  422. to trust Christ,

  423. to follow him,

  424. listen to this,

  425. the Spirit of God

  426. lives in us,

  427. and he gives us

  428. the desire

  429. and the ability

  430. to live that morally

  431. good life

  432. that pleases God.

  433. Look at this passage

  434. of Scripture.

  435. Paul writes,

  436. to a church,

  437. therefore,

  438. my beloved,

  439. as you have always

  440. obeyed,

  441. so now,

  442. not only as in my presence,

  443. but much more

  444. in my absence,

  445. work out your own salvation

  446. with fear and trembling,

  447. for it is God

  448. who works in you

  449. both to will

  450. and to work

  451. for his good pleasure.

  452. Paul is writing

  453. to Christians,

  454. people who are

  455. trusting in Jesus.

  456. This is his way

  457. of telling them,

  458. now you need to grow,

  459. you need to mature,

  460. you need to become

  461. more like Jesus.

  462. And the way that happens

  463. is,

  464. it's not that you try

  465. to be good.

  466. It's not that you try

  467. to do your best

  468. to just do this or that.

  469. The idea is,

  470. if you're a Christian,

  471. the Spirit of God

  472. lives within you,

  473. and he works in you

  474. to give you the desire

  475. to please God,

  476. to obey him.

  477. He gives you the ability

  478. to act on that desire

  479. to live this morally pure life.

  480. Do you see evidence

  481. in your life

  482. that you are a Christian

  483. based on what

  484. the scripture says

  485. that a Christian is?

  486. If we're really

  487. God's children,

  488. it will show,

  489. it will show

  490. in the way

  491. that we love him,

  492. the way that we obey him,

  493. the way that we are

  494. developing Christ-like character,

  495. the way that we're

  496. treating the people

  497. that we live with,

  498. that we interact with

  499. every day.

  500. Following Jesus

  501. will lead us

  502. to develop a loving

  503. relationship

  504. with our Heavenly Father.

  505. Real followers of Jesus

  506. have a desire

  507. to know God better

  508. by reading his word,

  509. listening to God

  510. speak through his word.

  511. Real followers of Jesus

  512. have a desire

  513. to have a real relationship

  514. with God

  515. as their Heavenly Father,

  516. and we want to talk to him.

  517. That's what prayer is,

  518. talking to God.

  519. Once we know

  520. how to please God

  521. by spending time with him

  522. in his word and prayer,

  523. once we know

  524. how to please God,

  525. the Holy Spirit

  526. will give us

  527. those desires

  528. and abilities

  529. to do it.

  530. Now,

  531. the Bible does not teach

  532. this moralistic idea

  533. that all we need to do

  534. is just try to be good.

  535. And if we do our best

  536. to be good

  537. and we do more good

  538. than bad,

  539. we go to heaven

  540. when we die.

  541. That is a lie.

  542. There is nothing

  543. in the Bible

  544. that even implies

  545. some kind of

  546. teaching like that.

  547. So I want to ask you,

  548. are you a Christian?

  549. Why would you say that?

  550. Are you trusting Christ

  551. and him alone

  552. as your Savior?

  553. Have you

  554. and are you still

  555. turning from sin

  556. as just a way of life?

  557. Are you seeking,

  558. do you have the desire

  559. to be more and more

  560. like Jesus?

  561. To please God

  562. more and more

  563. by discovering

  564. how he wants you to live

  565. and then living that way?

  566. Do you have the desires

  567. within you

  568. that come from

  569. the Spirit of God

  570. who indwells you

  571. when God saves you?

  572. Number two,

  573. the Bible does not teach

  574. the therapeutic idea

  575. that our major problem

  576. is low self-esteem

  577. and that God's main concern

  578. is to make us feel better

  579. about ourselves.

  580. This therapeutic teaching,

  581. number three,

  582. the central goal of life

  583. is to be happy

  584. and to feel good

  585. about oneself.

  586. Now,

  587. everybody wants to be happy.

  588. Everybody wants to feel good

  589. about themselves.

  590. Problem is,

  591. we decide

  592. the best way

  593. to make us happy

  594. and feel good

  595. about ourselves.

  596. The problem is

  597. we put ourself

  598. at the center of life.

  599. That's the problem.

  600. In today's

  601. therapeutic age,

  602. human problems

  603. are identified

  604. as anything

  605. and everything

  606. except the result

  607. of our sinful choices.

  608. Solutions are identified

  609. today in terms

  610. of treatment plans

  611. and self-help programs.

  612. But rarely do you hear

  613. people talking today

  614. about

  615. the problem

  616. comes from

  617. my sinful choices

  618. and I need to repent.

  619. I need to change

  620. the way that I

  621. am choosing

  622. to respond

  623. to the truth

  624. of God's word.

  625. Now,

  626. let me say this.

  627. For sure,

  628. every problem

  629. we deal with

  630. is not a sin problem.

  631. It is not.

  632. There are some

  633. personal issues.

  634. There are some

  635. relational issues,

  636. emotional issues.

  637. It would do

  638. a lot of people

  639. good to talk

  640. to a true,

  641. trained,

  642. biblically sound

  643. counselor.

  644. It's like you go

  645. to a doctor,

  646. physical doctor,

  647. MD for a health

  648. problem,

  649. physical health.

  650. There's people

  651. that could help you

  652. with some issues

  653. if you give them

  654. the opportunity.

  655. Every problem

  656. is not a sin problem.

  657. Hear me say that.

  658. But many of the

  659. problems we deal

  660. with

  661. are a direct

  662. result

  663. of our sinful

  664. choices.

  665. And when that's

  666. the case,

  667. we'll never

  668. find answers

  669. when we ignore

  670. or deny

  671. our responsibility

  672. for our sinful

  673. choices.

  674. Let me give you

  675. an example.

  676. The last two weeks

  677. we've been talking

  678. about marriage.

  679. We've been talking

  680. about God's design

  681. for marriage.

  682. Let's just say

  683. Genesis 2,

  684. 24 right now.

  685. It's God's intent

  686. for a married couple

  687. to leave their parents,

  688. be united

  689. to one another

  690. in a one flesh

  691. relationship.

  692. It may be

  693. that some of your

  694. marital problems

  695. are from your

  696. sinful choice

  697. of refusing

  698. to let go

  699. of your parents

  700. and make your spouse

  701. the number one person

  702. in your life,

  703. humanly speaking.

  704. It may be

  705. the problem

  706. in your marriage

  707. is your sinful choice

  708. just to be

  709. a selfish person

  710. and expect your spouse

  711. to live for you,

  712. to please you,

  713. rather than you

  714. living for him

  715. or her

  716. to serve him

  717. or her.

  718. as a part

  719. of your own life

  720. because you're

  721. that one flesh.

  722. The Bible

  723. has a lot

  724. to say

  725. about how

  726. we relate

  727. to self

  728. and most

  729. of it

  730. can be

  731. classified

  732. in terms

  733. of humbling

  734. ourselves,

  735. not exalting

  736. ourselves

  737. and denying

  738. ourselves,

  739. not

  740. indulging

  741. ourselves.

  742. The Bible

  743. repeatedly

  744. calls us

  745. to guard

  746. against

  747. exalting

  748. ourselves

  749. by warning

  750. us against

  751. the sin

  752. of pride.

  753. Look quickly.

  754. Jesus made

  755. this clear.

  756. He says,

  757. for everyone

  758. who exalts

  759. himself

  760. will be humbled,

  761. but the one

  762. who humbles

  763. himself

  764. will be exalted.

  765. Peter echoed

  766. this.

  767. Clothe yourselves,

  768. all of you,

  769. with humility

  770. toward one another.

  771. Stop.

  772. Just go back

  773. to marriage

  774. or just

  775. your home.

  776. Spouse,

  777. husband,

  778. wife relationships,

  779. parent,

  780. child relationships.

  781. Could it be

  782. that some

  783. of the tension,

  784. some of the

  785. hostility,

  786. some of the

  787. issues that

  788. you're dealing

  789. with in your

  790. home is

  791. because you're

  792. just a prideful

  793. person.

  794. You expect

  795. everybody in the

  796. house to sit

  797. up and take

  798. notice and wait

  799. on you.

  800. It's all

  801. about me.

  802. Children think

  803. that.

  804. Parents think

  805. that.

  806. Some wives

  807. think that.

  808. Some husbands

  809. think that.

  810. And that's

  811. the foundational

  812. problem.

  813. You're a prideful

  814. person.

  815. You're arrogant.

  816. Your spouse

  817. is supposed to

  818. serve you

  819. no matter what.

  820. Your children

  821. are supposed to

  822. bow down to you

  823. no matter what.

  824. Or your parents

  825. are supposed to

  826. do whatever you

  827. want them to do

  828. no matter what.

  829. Peter says,

  830. clothe yourselves,

  831. all of you,

  832. with humility

  833. toward one

  834. another.

  835. For God

  836. opposes the

  837. proud, but

  838. he gives grace

  839. to the humble.

  840. Our major

  841. problem is not

  842. low self-esteem.

  843. God's main

  844. concern is to

  845. not make us

  846. feel better

  847. about ourselves.

  848. That's heresy.

  849. That's in fact

  850. the opposite

  851. of what the

  852. scripture teaches.

  853. Let's look at

  854. one more.

  855. The Bible does

  856. not teach

  857. deism, that

  858. God created

  859. the world, but

  860. does not remain

  861. actively involved

  862. in guiding

  863. everything according

  864. to his purpose.

  865. This moralistic

  866. therapeutic deism

  867. teaches that a

  868. God exists who

  869. created and ordered

  870. the world and

  871. watches over human

  872. life on earth.

  873. Good, as far as

  874. it goes.

  875. But look at the

  876. next one, number

  877. four.

  878. God does not

  879. need to be

  880. particularly

  881. involved in

  882. one's life

  883. except when

  884. God is needed

  885. to resolve a

  886. problem.

  887. For sake of

  888. time, I'm

  889. going to skip

  890. over the

  891. teaching that

  892. God is involved

  893. in every detail

  894. of life.

  895. That God is

  896. working out

  897. everything according

  898. to his eternal

  899. plan in your

  900. life, in this

  901. world, and

  902. everything.

  903. I want to

  904. zero in on one

  905. major point that

  906. needs to be made

  907. about this last

  908. heretical idea.

  909. Look at it

  910. again.

  911. God does not

  912. need to be

  913. particularly

  914. involved in

  915. one's life

  916. except when

  917. God is needed

  918. to resolve a

  919. problem.

  920. That's like

  921. saying God is

  922. always there for

  923. me.

  924. Now I know

  925. as Christians

  926. we may not

  927. mean it to

  928. sound as bad

  929. as it does

  930. when we say

  931. well God's

  932. always there for

  933. me.

  934. But let it

  935. sink in what

  936. you're saying

  937. if you really

  938. believe that.

  939. to think God's

  940. always there for

  941. me.

  942. As if he's on

  943. the side

  944. waiting like a

  945. bellhop.

  946. That's one of

  947. the most

  948. blasphemous,

  949. God

  950. dishonoring,

  951. and personally

  952. arrogant statements

  953. a human being

  954. can make.

  955. I want you to

  956. look at what

  957. David Wells,

  958. a theologian,

  959. says about

  960. this.

  961. He says God

  962. is not there

  963. to conform to

  964. us, we must

  965. conform to

  966. him.

  967. He summons us

  968. to know him.

  969. We are summoned

  970. to know him

  971. only on his

  972. terms.

  973. He is not

  974. known on our

  975. terms.

  976. This summons is

  977. heard in and

  978. through his word.

  979. It is not heard

  980. through our

  981. intuitions.

  982. God is not

  983. there at our

  984. convenience or

  985. simply for our

  986. healings or

  987. simply as the

  988. divine teller

  989. handing out

  990. stuff from his

  991. bank.

  992. No, we are

  993. here for his

  994. service.

  995. We are here to

  996. know him as

  997. he is and not

  998. as we want him

  999. to be.

  1000. God is not who

  1001. you think he is

  1002. or want him to

  1003. be or imagine

  1004. him to be.

  1005. God is as he

  1006. is and he has

  1007. revealed himself

  1008. in his word.

  1009. I think one of

  1010. the best ways to

  1011. describe this is

  1012. like this.

  1013. I'm a father

  1014. of two sons.

  1015. I've got two

  1016. little grandchildren.

  1017. If my sons and

  1018. my grandchildren

  1019. never come around

  1020. me, never call

  1021. me, never have

  1022. anything to do

  1023. with me except

1024. when they get in a

  1025. bind and then

  1026. dad, bop, I'm

  1027. going to resent it.

  1028. I'm going to see

  1029. through it.

  1030. They don't care

  1031. about me.

  1032. They care about

  1033. what I can do

  1034. for them.

  1035. I want to tell

  1036. you young people,

  1037. graduates, don't

  1038. go off to college

  1039. and your parents

  1040. never hear from

  1041. you until you

  1042. want something.

  1043. You're using

  1044. them.

  1045. You're abusing

  1046. them.

  1047. If I was them,

  1048. I wouldn't be

  1049. abused.

  1050. It's

  1051. dishonoring.

  1052. It's

  1053. disgraceful.

1054. That is how a lot

  1055. of people and

  1056. even some

  1057. professing

  1058. Christians treat

  1059. God.

  1060. He's on the

  1061. sideline.

  1062. He's there when I

  1063. need him.

  1064. But there's no

  1065. relationship.

  1066. There's no ongoing

  1067. fellowship.

  1068. There's no talking

  1069. to him, listening to

  1070. him, no interaction

  1071. with him, no concern

  1072. about pleasing him

  1073. until I need

  1074. something.

  1075. If that's your

  1076. relationship with

  1077. God, you have no

  1078. relationship with

  1079. God.

  1080. You are doing more

  1081. to anger him, to

  1082. dishonor him, to

  1083. disrespect him than

  1084. anything by that

  1085. attitude.

  1086. Hear carefully

  1087. this morning.

  1088. The concept of

  1089. moralistic therapeutic

  1090. deism shows the

  1091. shallowness of a

  1092. American Christianity

  1093. and it shows us

  1094. there is a false

  1095. gospel that many

  1096. people have placed

  1097. their hope in.

  1098. And my prayer is

  1099. that there's no one

  1100. here that is placing

1101. your hope in such a

  1102. gospel.

  1103. But if you realize

  1104. you have, you are,

  1105. admit it to God

  1106. now.

  1107. Admit that you've

  1108. been abusing him,

  1109. dishonoring him,

  1110. that you've been trying

1111. to work your way to

  1112. heaven or whatever it

  1113. is.

  1114. Confess your sin.

  1115. Repent of your sin.

1116. Put your trust truly in

1117. Jesus as your Savior and

  1118. Lord.

1119. Seek to truly follow him,

1120. to please him, to serve

1121. him, to do his will.

1122. And you will find in, as

1123. Jesus said, if you'll lose

1124. your life for his sake,

  1125. that's when you will

1126. really get the best life.

  1127. Because that will be

  1128. God's will, God's way.

  1129. That's the way you'll most

1130. honor God and please him.

  1131. That's the way you'll most

1132. impact other people in the

  1133. right kind of way.

1134. And if you really want to

  1135. feel the best about

  1136. yourself, live life God's

  1137. way.

  1138. Humbling yourself, loving

  1139. him, loving others, serving

  1140. him, serving others.

1141. And you can feel good

1142. about that kind of God

  1143. honoring, Christ

  1144. following self.

  1145. Let's pray together.

1146. Lord, show each of us how

1147. we should respond right now.

1148. Father, help us to not be

  1149. mistaken in thinking that

1150. somehow or another, if we

1151. just do more good than bad,

1152. you'll accept us in heaven

1153. one day or that we can have

1154. a good relationship with you

  1155. now.

1156. Help us to see and admit our

1157. sinfulness, the fact that we

  1158. don't deserve a relationship

1159. with you, but that by your

1160. love and grace and mercy, you

1161. provide it through faith in

  1162. Jesus.

1163. Lord, show every person in

1164. this room how they should

  1165. respond to this message.

1166. For some, dear God, show them

1167. they need to thank their

1168. parents for being faithful to

1169. the truth of your word and

1170. guiding them in the right way.

1171. Or they need to be thankful to

1172. their Sunday school teacher or

  1173. some other teacher.

1174. show us how we should respond.

1175. Help us to do that.

1176. And then an attitude of

1177. prayer, let's just do what God

  1178. tells us to do.

1179. The heads bowed, eyes closed.

1180. If you'd like, I'd be happy to

1181. pray with you here in front of

1182. this room here in the next few

  1183. minutes.

  1184. Matthew 16.

  1185. Until post time.

  1186. Yeah.

  1187. Incauchen.

  1188. Hayesz.
