  1. What would you call the most important teaching or learning center in Pickens County?

  2. In Pickens County, the most important teaching center, or you may refer to it as a learning center.

  3. I'm going to guess that a lot of people think about public schools in general, maybe a particular school,

  4. maybe a particular level of school like elementary school.

  5. Some people, what came to your mind was the church.

  6. Hopefully this church, if that's what you're thinking.

  7. Well, both certainly are true.

  8. Schools are teaching centers.

  9. Our church is a teaching center.

  10. But I want you to think of this.

  11. Before anyone ever sets foot in any church or school building,

  12. they have spent their earliest and most life-shaping years in a home.

  13. For good or bad,

  14. we,

  15. we all begin,

  16. we all start out in life

  17. in a home

  18. that really is the most

  19. crucial,

  20. most important teaching and learning center

  21. in our lives.

  22. Chuck Swindoll agrees.

  23. He wrote a book on the home called Home,

  24. where life makes up its mind.

  25. Here's how he describes the influence of the home.

  26. Home,

  27. your home,

  28. that unique place where character is developed

  29. and patterns for life are determined.

  30. It is the first and most influential

  31. teaching center

  32. for every child.

  33. And I want to

  34. emphasize,

  35. because a lot of

  36. teachers here

  37. know this better than anyone,

  38. both good and bad.

  39. Today,

  40. I want us to look at the second most important

  41. relationship in the home.

  42. Described in Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6:1–4

  43. verses 1 through 4,

  44. we're talking about the parent-child relationship.

  45. This is the third and final

  46. in our series on

  47. building a healthy home.

  48. The first two studies

  49. focused on the most important

  50. relationship in the home,

  51. the husband-wife relationship.

  52. The husband-wife relationship

  53. sets the foundation,

  54. sets the tone

  55. for everything that goes on

  56. in a home.

  57. We looked at the husband-wife relationship

  58. as found in Genesis 2, 24

  59. and in Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5:21–33

  60. verses 21 through 33.

  61. Today,

  62. we're going to look at chapter 6,

  63. verses 1 through 4

  64. at the parent-child relationship.

  65. The second part of the structure

  66. of a healthy home.

  67. Let's read together.

  68. 6-1 of Ephesians.

  69. Children,

  70. obey your parents and the Lord,

  71. for this is right.

  72. Honor your father and mother.

  73. This is the first commandment

  74. with a promise,

  75. that it may go well with you

  76. and that you may live long

  77. in the land.

  78. That's recalling the fifth

  79. of the tenth,

  80. of the ten commandments.

  81. Verse 4.

  82. Fathers,

  83. do not provoke your children

  84. to anger,

  85. but bring them up

  86. in the discipline

  87. and instruction

  88. of the Lord.

  89. We're going to begin

  90. the way the passage does.

  91. Verses 1 through 3,

  92. instructions to children.

  93. Now,

  94. I realized

  95. today is children's church.

  96. So,

  97. our little ones,

  98. children,

  99. elementary age and under,

  100. are over there.

  101. I thought about it

  102. toward the end of the week

  103. about maybe

  104. going over there

  105. at the first part of the service

  106. and talking about this

  107. a little bit over there,

  108. but they'd already had

  109. everything planned.

  110. I didn't even bring it up.

  111. And so,

  112. here's what we're going to do.

  113. you,

  114. as parents,

  115. you teach

  116. what they need to hear

  117. from this message.

  118. As part of what we're

  119. going to look at this morning,

  120. that is your responsibility

  121. to teach your children.

  122. So,

  123. I want to encourage you

  124. to listen carefully

  125. and don't just

  126. tell them the parts

  127. that you want them to hear.

  128. Tell them the whole thing

  129. in its context.

  130. Let's look at it.

  131. God's instructions

  132. to children

  133. can be summarized

  134. very simply,

  135. obey and honor your parents.

  136. Obey and honor.

  137. Look at verse one.

  138. God intends for children

  139. to obey their parents.

  140. It's real simple,

  141. isn't it?

  142. Children,

  143. obey your parents

  144. and the Lord

  145. for this is right.

  146. This is a command

  147. that's directed

  148. to children

  149. who live at home.

  150. If you look in verse four,

  151. there are instructions

  152. there about

  153. teaching,

  154. training,

  155. instructing,

  156. disciplining children

  157. in the home.

  158. Children are under

  159. their parents' authority

  160. as long as they live

  161. in their parents' home

  162. and depend on their parents

  163. to provide

  164. for their basic needs.

  165. I want you to understand that.

  166. You older kids here,

  167. teenagers,

  168. there's different ways

  169. that parents

  170. should relate

  171. to their older children

  172. for sure.

  173. But bottom line,

  174. children living

  175. in their parents' home,

  176. children dependent

  177. upon them,

  178. and you are dependent

  179. upon them

  180. by virtue of you

  181. living in their home,

  182. you're under

  183. their authority.

  184. Now,

  185. if you're over 18

  186. and you think

  187. to yourself,

  188. I don't agree

  189. with that.

  190. I don't think

  191. somebody 18 years old

  192. or 20 years old

  193. should have to submit

  194. to their parents'

  195. authority.

  196. We're young adults,

  197. that's true.

  198. But,

  199. if you don't really

  200. want to live

  201. under your parents'

  202. authority

  203. in their home,

  204. there is a good way

  205. for you to become

  206. independent.

  207. move out,

  208. get a job,

  209. take care of

  210. all of your bills.

  211. I'm not joking

  212. here now,

  213. that's what it means

  214. to be on your own.

  215. And if you're not

  216. moved out,

  217. working,

  218. making everything

  219. yourself,

  220. you're not

  221. on your own.

  222. You may not like

  223. the way that sounds,

  224. but that's the reality

  225. that you are living

  226. in right now.

  227. And I don't think

  228. your parents by any

  229. means should make it

  230. a burden,

  231. just hell on earth

  232. to live there.

  233. But don't

  234. misunderstand.

  235. If you're living

  236. under their roof,

  237. you're under

  238. their authority.

  239. Children are

  240. commanded by God

  241. to obey their parents,

  242. but parents

  243. need to teach them

  244. how to do it.

  245. And it needs to start

  246. when they're very young.

  247. You know that.

  248. Children are always

  249. learning

  250. about obedience,

  251. but it may not be

  252. what their parents

  253. want them to learn,

  254. and it may not be

  255. what their parents

  256. are intending to teach.

  257. Some children learn

  258. that they really

  259. don't have to obey

  260. their parents,

  261. because when they

  262. disobey,

  263. there's no consequences.

  264. Some children know,

  265. I'm in charge.

  266. I don't have to do

  267. anything they tell me,

  268. because if I disobey,

  269. they're not going to

  270. do anything about it.

  271. I'm going to get by

  272. with it.

  273. Some children learn

  274. they don't have to

  275. obey their parents

  276. until their parents

  277. just lose control,

  278. yell, get angry.

  279. For an example,

  280. I hope you haven't

  281. been there and done this.

  282. Supper's ready.

  283. Mom or dad?

  284. Johnny,

  285. come to the table.

  286. Supper's ready.

  287. No movement.

  288. No sounds.

  289. Johnny,

  290. did you hear me?

  291. It's time to eat.

  292. This is awful.

  293. Johnny,

  294. I'm going to count

  295. to three.

  296. And then finally,

  297. a lot of us

  298. have been here

  299. and we don't want

  300. to admit this.

  301. If you don't get

  302. your rear end

  303. in that chair

  304. right now,

  305. I'm going to

  306. wear you out.

  307. And then they come.

  308. And what they have

  309. learned is,

  310. I don't have to do

  311. anything until they

  312. are mad, angry,

  313. yelling, and

  314. threatening to hurt me.

  315. And we know as parents,

  316. that's true.

  317. Not a lesson we intend,

  318. but one that they learn.

  319. When it comes to

  320. teaching children to obey,

  321. it is very important

  322. for parents to take

  323. into consideration

  324. the age and maturity

  325. level of their child.

  326. Little children,

  327. they need to learn

  328. or be taught

  329. to obey

  330. just because

  331. it's the right thing

  332. to do.

  333. We're going to talk

  334. about that a little bit

  335. more in a moment.

  336. But little children,

  337. they don't understand

  338. a whole lot

  339. about why you do

  340. this or that.

  341. But little children

  342. just need to know

  343. that if mom and daddy

  344. tells them to do something,

  345. they need to do it

  346. because it's just

  347. the right thing to do

  348. to obey mom

  349. and daddy.

  350. That is where

  351. they learn

  352. to respect

  353. and obey authority.

  354. And that's important.

  355. You should not

  356. have to explain

  357. to your five-year-old

  358. why you tell him

  359. or her to do

  360. this or that.

  361. The fact that you

  362. as a parent

  363. are telling them

  364. should be sufficient.

  365. Now,

  366. a lot of parents

  367. like that.

  368. Some of you say,

  369. oh, that's archaic.

  370. No, that's true.

  371. That's what's right.

  372. If you've listened

  373. to that liberal junk,

  374. I can tell right now

  375. you're already in trouble.

  376. Now,

  377. as children mature,

  378. let's emphasize this.

  379. As children grow up,

  380. they're able to think

  381. and reason

  382. and understand.

  383. They need to learn

  384. why some things

  385. are right and wrong.

  386. They need to learn

  387. some,

  388. they need to learn

  389. reasons why

  390. you don't want them

  391. to do this

  392. and you want them

  393. to do that.

  394. That helps them

  395. to learn

  396. to think,

  397. to reason,

  398. to understand

  399. basic right and wrong

  400. or to understand

  401. rational reasoning.

  402. Children need

  403. to be taught

  404. to be responsible

  405. as they grow up.

  406. That includes

  407. helping them

  408. to think,

  409. to make decisions,

  410. to make choices

  411. and it also includes

  412. also it involves

  413. letting them

  414. sometimes suffer

  415. the consequences

  416. for their bad choices.

  417. And I want to

  418. think here for a moment,

  419. I'm not talking

  420. about sinful choices.

  421. A learning experience

  422. for children

  423. is to suffer consequences

  424. when they're just being

  425. irresponsible,

  426. when they don't think,

  427. when they don't take

  428. things necessary.

  429. If you've got a child

  430. who,

  431. they don't,

  432. they just,

  433. it's like pulling teeth

  434. to get them

  435. to do their homework.

  436. They won't

  437. finish their homework

  438. and put it

  439. in their backpack.

  440. They won't

  441. take the responsibility

  442. day after day

  443. after day

  444. to do the homework,

  445. put it in the backpack

  446. and take it back

  447. to school.

  448. You need to let them

  449. learn some consequences

  450. of not taking

  451. the responsibility

  452. to put it in their backpack

  453. and take it to school.

  454. Let them stay in

  455. at recess some.

  456. Let them suffer

  457. whatever the consequences

  458. are some.

  459. Don't always

  460. help them.

  461. If you've got a child

  462. who's just,

  463. they won't think,

  464. they won't take the time

  465. to be responsible,

  466. and they're always

  467. leaving their coat

  468. here or there

  469. in the wintertime.

  470. let them be cold

  471. some days.

  472. Let them go to school

  473. without a coat

  474. and go out at recess

  475. or go somewhere

  476. without a coat

  477. and freeze themselves

  478. during that time,

  479. and that may

  480. wake them up.

  481. Hey, I better

  482. remember my coat.

  483. And I,

  484. there's all kinds

  485. of situations

  486. here in a room

  487. this size.

  488. The light's gone on

  489. for some of you.

  490. You're bailing

  491. your children out

  492. everywhere you turn.

  493. Teach them

  494. to think,

  495. to make choices,

  496. and be responsible

  497. for their choices.

  498. Now,

  499. this command

  500. to obey.

  501. As children

  502. get older,

  503. especially teenagers

  504. and older teenagers,

  505. it should not

  506. be wrong

  507. in your house

  508. when situations

  509. come up

  510. it shouldn't

  511. be wrong

  512. for a child

  513. to ask why

  514. in a respectful

  515. way because

  516. they'd like to know

  517. what's wrong

  518. with this.

  519. Or they'd like

  520. to know

  521. why I need

  522. to do this.

  523. And they're just

  524. wanting to learn

  525. what I'm talking

  526. about.

  527. They're not being

  528. defiant,

  529. not being disrespectful.

  530. It should not

  531. be wrong

  532. for children

  533. to be able

  534. to enter

  535. into discussions

  536. about

  537. some things.

  538. it's not

  539. rebellious

  540. to ask

  541. questions.

  542. It's not

  543. rebellious

  544. in some

  545. situations

  546. to ask

  547. would you

  548. reconsider?

  549. Is there any

  550. way it could

  551. be different?

  552. I want you

  553. to understand

  554. older

  555. teenagers

  556. and older

  557. teenagers.

  558. it's the way

  559. you go about

  560. it sometimes

  561. that causes

  562. the conflict.

  563. But I want

  564. you to understand

  565. as a parent

  566. as your children

  567. are older

  568. explain things

  569. to them.

  570. Let them

  571. understand

  572. you're being

  573. reasonable

  574. even if they

  575. don't agree.

  576. Even if they

  577. still will not

  578. be happy

  579. about it

  580. have some

  581. give and take.

  582. but it's

  583. important

  584. that everybody

  585. at the table

  586. have a good

  587. attitude.

  588. No disrespect

  589. on either

  590. end.

  591. Ideally

  592. older

  593. teenagers

  594. especially

  595. those who

  596. are college

  597. age

  598. should act

  599. like young

  600. adults

  601. and be

  602. treated like

  603. young adults

  604. at home.

  605. Parents

  606. should have

  607. reasonable

  608. rules of

  609. the house.

  610. when it

  611. comes

  612. especially

  613. to older

  614. people

  615. older

  616. children

  617. living

  618. at home.

  619. And young

  620. adults

  621. should honor

  622. those

  623. reasonable

  624. rules

  625. as a part

  626. of respecting

  627. and honoring

  628. their parents.

  629. I want you

  630. to look at

  631. the reason

  632. why children

  633. obey their

  634. parents.

  635. Children

  636. should obey

  637. their parents

  638. in the Lord

  639. for this

  640. is right.

  641. In the Lord

  642. means

  643. that a child's

  644. obedience is a

  645. part of their

  646. obedience to the

  647. Lord.

  648. If you're a

  649. Christian

  650. as a child

  651. or teenager

  652. one of the

  653. reasons you

  654. ought to obey

  655. your parents

  656. is because

  657. that's what

  658. the Lord

  659. wants you

  660. to do.

  661. If you're

  662. serious about

  663. living a

  664. Christian life

  665. that's a

  666. part of

  667. living a

  668. Christian life

  669. to obey

  670. your parents.

  671. Look at the

  672. last phrase

  673. for this is

  674. right.

  675. This is just

  676. part of God's

  677. created order

  678. for life.

  679. It's just

  680. the way God

  681. made things

  682. to be.

  683. It's been

  684. in every

  685. culture.

  686. Children

  687. are to

  688. obey their

  689. parents.

  690. It's also

  691. how God

  692. intends for

  693. children to

  694. learn discipline

  695. and respect

  696. and authority

  697. as they grow

  698. up and become

  699. mature adults.

  700. There's another

  701. reason though why

  702. children should

  703. obey their

  704. parents.

  705. Really the

  706. main focus

  707. here verses

  708. two and

  709. three God

  710. intends for

  711. children to

  712. honor their

  713. parents.

  714. Honoring

  715. involves more

  716. than obedience

  717. doesn't it?

  718. Honor involves

  719. the right

  720. attitude.

  721. Honor involves

  722. love and

  723. respect.

  724. Let's just

  725. take a little

  726. point here.

  727. Children,

  728. teenagers,

  729. one way to

  730. honor your

  731. parents is

  732. to talk to

  733. them.

  734. Don't act

  735. like they

  736. don't exist.

  737. Do things

  738. with them.

  739. Act like you

  740. are a part

  741. of the

  742. family.

  743. Help around

  744. the house

  745. because you

  746. live there.

  747. Don't

  748. ignore your

  749. parents.

  750. Don't leave

  751. them out of

  752. your life

  753. except when

  754. you want

  755. something.

  756. If you're

  757. doing that

  758. your parents

  759. know they're

  760. not stupid.

  761. They know

  762. that you're

  763. using them

  764. if that's

  765. what you

  766. do.

  767. See some

  768. of you

  769. younger

  770. people

  771. and let's

  772. don't get

  773. too harsh

  774. because a lot

  775. of us

  776. older people

  777. we developed

  778. this well

  779. when we

  780. were young.

  781. Some

  782. younger

  783. people are

  784. kind

  785. artists.

  786. Kind

  787. man,

  788. kind

  789. girl.

  790. Well

  791. a lot

  792. of parents

  793. see through

  794. that and

  795. they know

  796. it.

  797. And I

  798. want you

  799. to understand

  800. when parents

  801. see that

  802. all they

  803. care about

  804. is what

  805. they can

  806. get out

  807. of me.

  808. All they

  809. want to

  810. do is

  811. use me.

  812. I want

  813. you to

  814. know

  815. that

  816. hurts.

  817. Parents

  818. that you

  819. know,

  820. love you,

  821. they've

  822. given much

  823. of themselves

  824. and what

  825. they can

  826. and there's

  827. never anything

  828. in return

  829. in terms

  830. of an

  831. attitude,

  832. a word

  833. or an

  834. action

  835. that hurts

  836. and it

  837. gets old.

  838. You need

  839. to know

  840. that.

  841. There comes

  842. a time

  843. when children

  844. outgrow

  845. the command

  846. to obey

  847. their parents

  848. when they

  849. go out

  850. on their

  851. own,

  852. even as

  853. a single

  854. adult or

  855. as a

  856. married

  857. person.

  858. And that's

  859. good.

  860. I don't

  861. know,

  862. no one

  863. is,

  864. nobody has

  865. ever said

  866. anything to

  867. me in this

  868. church about

  869. this,

  870. but this

  871. might

  872. ought to

  873. be said.

  874. If you

  875. are a

  876. grown

  877. child

  878. living

  879. on your

  880. own,

  881. work,

  882. have your

  883. place,

  884. do your

  885. thing,

  886. married or

  887. not,

  888. you don't

  889. have to

  890. obey your

  891. parents.

  892. You don't

  893. have to

  894. live the way

  895. they tell

  896. you to

  897. live.

  898. You don't

  899. have to

  900. work the

  901. kind of

  902. job they

  903. tell you

  904. to work.

  905. You don't

  906. have to

  907. marry the

  908. person they

  909. tell you

  910. you should

  911. marry.

  912. You don't

  913. have to

  914. quit being

  915. married to

  916. the person

  917. they want

  918. you to

  919. quit being

  920. married to.

  921. And if

  922. you've got

  923. grown

  924. children,

  925. they're on

  926. their own,

  927. leave them

  928. alone.

  929. Don't try to

  930. tell them how

  931. to live their

  932. life.

  933. Don't try to

  934. tell them what

  935. they ought to

  936. do, what

  937. they ought

  938. not do.

  939. Let them be

  940. adults.

  941. Let them have a

  942. positive relationship

  943. with you and

  944. you're no longer

  945. the boss.

  946. children outgrow

  947. the requirement

  948. to obey their

  949. parents but

  950. children never

  951. outgrow God's

  952. command to

  953. honor their

  954. father and

  955. mother.

  956. As adult

  957. children, no

  958. matter what

  959. age we are,

  960. we have a

  961. responsibility to

  962. honor our

  963. parents as long

  964. as they live

  965. and among other

  966. things that means

  967. that we don't

  968. ignore them.

  969. We don't leave

  970. them out of our

  971. lives.

  972. As long as our

  973. parents are alive,

  974. we need to make

  975. sure that we're

  976. honoring them in

  977. the way that we

  978. relate to them,

  979. communicate with

  980. them, help them

  981. if they need it.

  982. You know, the

  983. command to honor

  984. parents also comes

  985. with a motivating

  986. reason.

  987. Look again in

  988. verse 3, that it

  989. may go well with

  990. you and that you

  991. may live long in

  992. the land.

  993. That was spoken

  994. to Israel before

  995. they went into

  996. the promised land,

  997. but that was

  998. never a guarantee

  999. that all children

  1000. who honor their

  1001. parents will live

  1002. a long time and

  1003. if you don't honor

  1004. your parents,

  1005. you'll die early.

  1006. This is a general

  1007. principle of life.

  1008. It's like a

  1009. proverb.

  1010. Children who

  1011. honor and respect

  1012. their parents tend

  1013. to live longer and

  1014. live better lives.

  1015. For an example,

  1016. the idea is a

  1017. child who grows up

  1018. and obeys their

  1019. parents, honor

  1020. their parents.

  1021. We're talking

  1022. about obeying and

  1023. honoring godly

  1024. parents in this

  1025. context.

  1026. And if you've got

  1027. Christian parents,

  1028. godly parents,

  1029. they're going to

  1030. try to help you

  1031. go in a good

  1032. direction in some

  1033. of the choices you

  1034. make.

  1035. And they're going

  1036. to try to help

1037. you not go in the

  1038. wrong direction and

  1039. make some very

  1040. foolish, life-altering

  1041. choices.

  1042. That is the idea.

  1043. Proverbs is filled

  1044. with such warnings.

  1045. Look at some

  1046. examples.

  1047. He says,

  1048. Listen, my son,

  1049. accept what I say

  1050. and the years of

  1051. your life will be

  1052. many.

  1053. Proverbs 10,

  1054. The fear of the

  1055. Lord adds length

  1056. to life, but the

  1057. years of the wicked

  1058. are cut short.

  1059. Children who

  1060. reject the counsel

  1061. of their godly

  1062. parents will often

  1063. follow a path that

  1064. ruins their lives

  1065. or hurts their

  1066. lives, maybe even

  1067. cut it short.

1068. If you are a wise

  1069. teenager or child,

  1070. you'll obey and

  1071. honor your parents

  1072. for a lot of

  1073. reasons.

  1074. Number one, God

  1075. commands it.

  1076. It's the right thing

  1077. to do.

  1078. But it really will,

1079. as a general way of

  1080. life, it really will

1081. work out for the best

1082. for you in the long

  1083. run.

  1084. Let's turn our

  1085. attention quickly now

  1086. to verse four.

  1087. Instruction to

  1088. parents.

  1089. Look at it.

  1090. Fathers, do not

  1091. provoke your children

  1092. to anger, but bring

  1093. them up in the

  1094. discipline and

  1095. instruction of the

  1096. Lord.

  1097. Fathers are taking the

  1098. lead in spiritual

  1099. teaching.

  1100. We know, we've seen

  1101. in the other study

  1102. from chapter five,

  1103. 22 through 33,

  1104. husbands are the

  1105. God-ordained leaders

  1106. of the home.

  1107. If there's no

  1108. father in your

  1109. home, or if the

  1110. father's not a

  1111. Christian, or if he

  1112. won't take

  1113. responsibility, then

  1114. by all means,

  1115. mothers take the

  1116. lead.

  1117. Don't let it slide.

  1118. If there is neither

  1119. parent a Christian, or

  1120. won't take

  1121. responsibility,

  1122. grandparents, you

  1123. step up, aunts and

  1124. uncles, family members,

  1125. members of this

  1126. church, do whatever

  1127. you can to help

  1128. children who have no

  1129. other spiritual

  1130. guidance, help them

  1131. be a spiritual

  1132. influencer in their

  1133. life.

  1134. Now, from this point

1135. on, I want to refer

  1136. to parents, both

  1137. mother and dad.

  1138. Let's look.

  1139. What children don't

  1140. need from their

  1141. parents, verse four,

  1142. the first part,

  1143. fathers do not

  1144. provoke your children

  1145. to anger.

  1146. Now, I think it'd be

  1147. common sense that you

  1148. know that does not

  1149. mean you should never

  1150. do anything to make

  1151. your children angry.

  1152. Sometimes just doing

  1153. the right thing makes

  1154. some children angry.

  1155. Sometimes good, healthy,

  1156. proper discipline makes

  1157. a child angry because

  1158. they just got punished.

  1159. Sometimes doing what

  1160. your child, making your

1161. child do what is right,

  1162. or not allowing your

  1163. child to do something

1164. that you know is wrong

  1165. will make them angry.

  1166. That's not what he's

  1167. talking about, and I

  1168. think common sense helps

  1169. us to understand that.

  1170. He's talking about the

  1171. kind of things that

  1172. parents can do that

  1173. cause unnecessary,

  1174. harmful, resentful anger

  1175. in children.

1176. Look at the few things

  1177. that Kent Hughes, a

  1178. pastor, describes ways to

  1179. avoid provoking anger.

  1180. Number one, don't have

  1181. unreasonable expectations.

  1182. Do not have unreasonable

  1183. expectations.

  1184. Don't expect your five-year-old

1185. to be able to do what a

  1186. 10-year-old can do.

  1187. Don't expect your 10-year-old

1188. to be able to do what, or

  1189. think like a 15-year-old.

1190. I can remember when my

  1191. oldest, David, was very

  1192. young.

  1193. I can remember, I don't know

1194. what I did, what I said, but

1195. I remember my dad sort of

1196. standing off to the side

1197. and doing it in a real

1198. positive sort of a smile on

1199. his face, but I remember

1200. him telling me, don't expect

1201. him to be a grown man.

1202. Whatever it was, my dad

  1203. thought it was unreasonable.

1204. He just looked at me.

  1205. Don't expect him to be a

  1206. grown man.

  1207. I've never forgot that.

  1208. Number two, don't

  1209. constantly criticize.

  1210. John Newton, the hymn

  1211. writer, he wrote Amazing

  1212. Grace.

  1213. He said he experienced

  1214. a difficult childhood.

  1215. Here's a statement he made

  1216. about his dad.

1217. I know that my father

1218. loved me, but he did not

1219. seem to wish me to see it.

1220. I know my father loved me,

1221. but he just didn't show it

1222. is what he was talking

  1223. about.

  1224. Don't, number three, don't

1225. be harsh and overly strict.

1226. Don't be harsh and overly

  1227. strict.

1228. Don't let no be the

  1229. automatic default response

  1230. to everything your child

  1231. asks you.

1232. You know, our goal as parents,

1233. one of our goal as parents

1234. is prepare our children to

  1235. leave home and be

  1236. independent adults.

1237. I hope you all know that.

  1238. It's a gradual process

  1239. throughout life, but when

1240. you take that little baby

  1241. home from the hospital,

1242. you're looking at him or

  1243. her, their fifth birthday,

  1244. their tenth birthday,

  1245. fifteenth birthday,

1246. whatever it is, the ultimate

  1247. goal in your parenting,

1248. in this, what we're talking

1249. about right here, the ultimate

1250. goal is for you to raise a

1251. child who is mature, who is

1252. independent, who can think for

1253. himself or herself, who has some

1254. wisdom and can go out in this

1255. world on their own and be

  1256. productive, be self-sufficient.

1257. The ultimate goal is that they be a

1258. boy or girl, man or woman who has a

1259. close relationship with God and

1260. seeks to know and do his will, but

1261. I'm talking about just in this world

1262. as a human being, our goal is to make

  1263. our children self-sufficient,

  1264. independent.

  1265. Well, that can't start when they're

  1266. fifteen.

1267. It's got to be a lifelong process

1268. of increasingly giving them freedom

  1269. and responsibility.

  1270. Freedom and responsibility.

1271. Let them learn some things.

  1272. Don't always say no.

1273. And then number four, don't fail to

1274. give your child your attention.

  1275. Don't fail relationally, one-on-one.

  1276. Don't fail at FaceTime.

1277. What gets most of your FaceTime?

1278. Your smartphone, iPad, computer, TV,

  1279. book, or your child.

  1280. Meaningful relationships require

  1281. FaceTime, eye contact, listening,

  1282. talking.

1283. You see this as well as I do.

  1284. Everywhere you go today,

1285. people together, but they're not.

1286. Because even at a restaurant,

1287. people not talking to one another,

1288. not looking at one another, but

1289. looking at an iPhone, scrolling down

1290. the iPhone and avoiding basically one

  1291. another.

1292. Not too long ago, I was in a restaurant.

1293. There was a lady about my age,

1294. we'll say, and she obviously had her

1295. mother, who would look to be a sharp,

  1296. alert, older lady.

1297. This mother was sitting there,

1298. and her 60-year-old daughter, say,

1299. was sitting beside her with her face in

1300. that phone, flipping through it,

1301. and in completely ignoring her mother.

1302. You see it at every age.

1303. This probably is more like meddling than

1304. preaching, but I'm going to do it anyway.

  1305. If I have children,

1306. my children with me at a restaurant,

1307. and they've got an iPhone that I'm paying for,

1308. they will not sit there and ignore me

1309. and look at that phone long,

  1310. because I'll take it.

  1311. It's mine.

1312. Let me tell you something, kids,

  1313. of all ages,

1314. if your mom and daddy is paying for the car,

  1315. it's theirs.

1316. If they're paying for the cell phone,

  1317. it's theirs.

1318. And I want to encourage parents to be parents

1319. and be in control of some things.

1320. Don't let your children control your life

1321. and your home like so many do today.

1322. And I would not sit there and complain

1323. about a child looking at the phone

1324. instead of looking at me.

1325. If I'm paying for it,

  1326. you can take it.

1327. And that's not being overbearing.

  1328. That's not being wrong

  1329. and going too far.

1330. That's your children being disrespectful of you

1331. and you intervening and not allowing it to happen.

1332. Now, I might need somebody to stand with me

1333. at the door this morning.

1334. Some of you younger people may be mad at me,

1335. but you'll get over it.

  1336. Because sooner or later,

  1337. you'll know that's right.

1338. You may not know it

1339. until you have your own children

1340. and you're ready to knock that phone

  1341. out of their hand

1342. just like your parents are you right now

  1343. because of the disrespect.

1344. Nothing wrong with a phone.

1345. I use one every day.

  1346. Nothing wrong with computers.

  1347. All this technology,

1348. we all use them, enjoy them,

1349. profit by them, work with them.

1350. But they should not rob us

  1351. of FaceTime,

  1352. personal interaction,

  1353. and especially with people

1354. we are the closest to.

1355. What children need from their parents.

1356. Look at the last part,

  1357. verse four,

  1358. the last part,

1359. but bring them up in the discipline

1360. and instruction of the Lord.

1361. The phrase bring them up.

  1362. It could be translated

  1363. nourish them up

1364. because that word translated bring,

  1365. it's the same word

1366. that you find in verse 29 of chapter five

  1367. that is translated nourish.

1368. Paul describes how a husband

1369. should care for his wife

1370. just as he does his own body

1371. and just as Christ cares for the church.

1372. So here in verse four,

1373. the idea is that parents

1374. should bring their children up

1375. in a gentle, caring, and loving way.

  1376. That's what a nourishing,

  1377. healthy environment is.

1378. Just think for a minute,

  1379. how would you describe

1380. the environment of your home right now?

1381. What kind of emotional atmosphere

1382. is there as a general rule?

1383. Is it stressful, harsh, sad, strict,

1384. verbally and or physically abusive?

1385. Or is it truly more nourishing,

  1386. more gentle, more joyful,

  1387. more loving, open, inviting?

  1388. Older children and teenagers,

  1389. you've got a responsibility

  1390. for helping to make

1391. your home environment this way.

1392. It's got to go both ways,

  1393. parents and children.

  1394. Number two,

  1395. children also need

  1396. consistent, loving discipline.

1397. Look at that word there.

  1398. The word discipline here

  1399. is a strong word.

1400. It means training by discipline.

  1401. It can even include

  1402. the idea of punishment.

  1403. It's the same word

1404. used in Hebrews chapter 12

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1405. to describe God's discipline.

1406. The emphasis in Hebrews 12

  1407. is that God disciplines

1408. His children out of love for us.

  1409. Just as Christian parents

  1410. discipline their children

  1411. because they love them.

1412. As we talk about discipline,

  1413. it is very important.

  1414. You can't have a healthy home

  1415. without it.

1416. But the way we go about

  1417. our discipline as parents,

1418. we need to be careful

1419. that we go about it

  1420. the right way.

  1421. It's always dangerous

  1422. for us to discipline

  1423. our child

  1424. when we're mad,

  1425. when we're hurt,

1426. when we're not in control

  1427. of our own emotions.

  1428. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  1429. made this statement

  1430. that all parents

1431. need to take to heart.

  1432. He says,

1433. when you discipline a child,

  1434. you should have

  1435. first control with yourself.

  1436. What right have you

1437. to say to your child

  1438. that he needs discipline

  1439. when you obviously

  1440. need it yourself?

  1441. Self-control,

  1442. the control of temper

  1443. is an essential prerequisite

1444. in the control of others.

  1445. Children certainly

  1446. need discipline.

  1447. And spanking

  1448. is not abuse.

1449. But we must make sure

1450. we do it the right way.

  1451. And it begins

  1452. with our own attitude,

1453. our own being in control.

  1454. One more.

  1455. Children also need

  1456. intentional Christian instruction.

  1457. instruction.

  1458. They need instruction

  1459. about the things

  1460. of the Lord

  1461. tells us here.

  1462. Most Christian parents

  1463. do take

  1464. their children's

  1465. instruction

  1466. in school

  1467. seriously.

  1468. Most good parents,

  1469. Christian parents,

  1470. they make sure

  1471. the child goes

  1472. to school every day,

  1473. they're on time,

  1474. they do their homework,

  1475. they're prepared

  1476. for testing

1477. like we've just gone through

  1478. not too long ago.

1479. But let me ask you,

  1480. parent,

  1481. how much effort

  1482. do you put into

  1483. your children's

  1484. spiritual education

  1485. at home

  1486. and then at church?

1487. Do you pray with them?

1488. Do you read the Bible

  1489. with them

  1490. or read Bible stories

  1491. when they're little?

  1492. Do you encourage them

  1493. to read the Bible

  1494. themselves?

1495. Do you talk to them

1496. about the things of God?

1497. Do you talk to them

  1498. about Jesus?

1499. Do you try to roll,

  1500. help them to see

  1501. how God's involved

  1502. in all of life?

  1503. Do you bring them

  1504. to Sunday school

  1505. regularly,

  1506. or wanna regularly,

  1507. other things

  1508. that we have here?

  1509. Do you bring them

  1510. here on time?

  1511. Is it as important

1512. to come to Sunday school

  1513. Bible study on time

1514. as it is to go

  1515. to work and school

  1516. on time?

  1517. That's important.

  1518. It's teaching children.

  1519. It's tough being a parent.

  1520. I think being a parent

1521. is the most difficult thing

1522. I've ever tried to do.

  1523. I really do.

  1524. But with God's help,

1525. we can be godly parents.

  1526. We can do

  1527. what we're being instructed

  1528. to do.

1529. God has put His Spirit

  1530. in us

  1531. to equip us,

1532. to give us the desire

1533. and ability to do it.

1534. He's put us in His Word

  1535. what to do.

  1536. We've just gotta be

  1537. faithful

1538. to the best of our ability.

1539. I wanna close this message

  1540. with a quote

  1541. from Cal Thomas.

  1542. He talks about

  1543. the responsibility

  1544. of parents

  1545. when all is said

  1546. and done.

  1547. Look at it.

  1548. Think about it carefully.

  1549. He says,

  1550. make sure

  1551. that at the end

  1552. of your life,

  1553. regardless of how

  1554. your child turns out,

  1555. that you can honestly

  1556. stand before God

  1557. and say,

  1558. in a fallen world,

  1559. being the sinner

  1560. that I am,

  1561. I did the best

  1562. I could

  1563. through the power

  1564. you gave me.

1565. If you can't say that,

  1566. whatever else

  1567. you have accomplished

  1568. doesn't matter.

  1569. Let's pray together.

  1570. Father,

  1571. help all of us

  1572. to know

  1573. how we should respond

  1574. to what you have

  1575. taught us

  1576. in this passage.

  1577. Father,

  1578. if there are parents

  1579. here who've just

  1580. failed,

  1581. they haven't

  1582. put forth

  1583. any effort,

  1584. they haven't prayed,

  1585. they haven't sought

  1586. to be

  1587. true,

  1588. spiritual

  1589. examples

  1590. and leaders

  1591. to their children,

  1592. help them

  1593. to confess

  1594. that as the sin

  1595. that it is

  1596. and truly

  1597. repent of it.

  1598. Help them,

  1599. Father,

  1600. right now

  1601. to make a new

  1602. commitment

  1603. to seek

  1604. your help

  1605. day by day

  1606. to live

  1607. a faithful Christian

  1608. life before their

  1609. children

  1610. and then to seek

  1611. to be the

  1612. spiritual

  1613. influence

  1614. influence in their

  1615. lives that you've

  1616. called them to be.

  1617. Help them to see,

  1618. Father,

  1619. that they can't be

  1620. perfect parents

  1621. and they don't have

  1622. perfect children,

  1623. but

1624. you will work in them

1625. to help them to guide

  1626. and influence their

1627. children in a good way.

  1628. Father,

  1629. if there are

  1630. parents in this

  1631. room that while

  1632. they know

  1633. they've not done

  1634. everything right,

  1635. they do see

  1636. some good signs

  1637. in their life,

  1638. but they're very

  1639. difficult,

  1640. they're very

  1641. concerned,

  1642. they're tired,

  1643. they have a lot

  1644. of unanswered

  1645. questions,

  1646. I pray,

  1647. Father,

  1648. that you will

  1649. comfort them,

  1650. that you'll

  1651. encourage them

  1652. not to give up,

  1653. not to quit,

  1654. but to persevere

  1655. in being that

  1656. faithful parent,

  1657. influencer,

  1658. teacher

  1659. of their child.

  1660. Father,

  1661. if there are

  1662. children in this

  1663. room who are

  1664. disobedient,

  1665. disrespectful,

  1666. they have bad

  1667. attitudes,

  1668. I pray that you

  1669. will convict them

  1670. of that sin

  1671. right now.

  1672. you'll cause

  1673. them to not

  1674. only seek your

  1675. forgiveness,

  1676. but seek their

  1677. parents'

  1678. forgiveness.

  1679. Just as,

  1680. Father,

  1681. you cause

  1682. parents to

  1683. seek their

  1684. child's forgiveness

  1685. in addition to

  1686. yours.

  1687. I pray,

  1688. Father,

  1689. that you'll just

  1690. do the work

  1691. in the life

  1692. of each parent

  1693. and child,

  1694. each influencer

  1695. of children

  1696. in this room

  1697. that will

  1698. all profit

  1699. from what

  1700. you've said

  1701. to us.

  1702. Lord,

  1703. help us to

  1704. see that

  1705. none of us

  1706. can do this

  1707. on our own.

  1708. We need

  1709. your help.

  1710. Help us to

  1711. look to you,

  1712. talk to you,

  1713. cooperate with

  1714. you every day.

  1715. and just

  1716. in an attitude

  1717. of prayer,

  1718. you listen

  1719. to the Lord

  1720. and you obey

  1721. Him about

  1722. this matter.

  1723. If I could

  1724. pray with you

  1725. during this time,

  1726. I'll be happy

  1727. to here at the

  1728. front.

  1729. Amen.

  1730. Amen.

  1731. Amen.

  1732. Amen.

  1733. Amen.

  1734. Amen.

  1735. Amen.

  1736. Amen.
