  1. Do you sometimes need reminders?

  2. Boy, I do.

  3. You know, those appointments to the doctor or to the dentist or wherever will creep up on you.

  4. And you just know you're going to remember them.

  5. But then you get that phone call.

  6. Mr. Brown, you do know you have an appointment today.

  7. You know, those kind of phone calls.

  8. And I'm grateful that now they're really good.

  9. They'll text you several times or they'll make a phone call.

  10. Sometimes just putting it on the calendar doesn't necessarily work.

  11. But we all really, let's just, a group of us today, let's just admit we need reminders.

  12. Well, God has placed reminders in His Word that if we'll just read them, we'll say,

  13. Oh, that's what He thinks is really important.

  14. And I do that all the time, don't you?

  15. It's like you'll be reading a passage you know you've read several times before.

  16. And you'll think, that's what God needs to do in my life.

  17. He needs to continue working through scriptures like that to change me and change my mind.

  18. And those reminders can be very powerful.

  19. And today is no different.

  20. I just need to remind you.

  21. And maybe a different voice reminding you of something that you have heard before

  22. might be the one thing that you need today.

  23. That reminder from God's Word.

  24. Today, I need to remind you that every believer is a minister.

  25. And so I want to talk about the ministry of the believer today.

  26. But I need to ask you the question right at the beginning.

  27. Do you really believe, I mean deep down in your heart, do you really believe that every believer is a minister?

  28. Now, most of us grew up knowing that the minister was the person who stood behind the pulpit on Sunday morning.

  29. And eventually, they finally got around to calling the choir leader the minister of music.

  30. So you got included in that minister.

  31. And then, of all people, the person who works with the youth, the teenagers,

  32. do they call you a youth minister here or minister to youth?

  33. It doesn't really matter.

  34. So, you know, for most people who are sitting in a pew on Sunday morning,

  35. the minister are the professional people who probably get paid to do what they're doing.

  36. That's how we grew up.

  37. Those were the ministers.

  38. Those were the ministers who's the minister at your church.

  39. I'd say, well, Dr. Batson.

  40. I mean, that's just how we grew up.

  41. But it doesn't match what the scripture says.

  42. In fact, I don't know who put it on that old brick sign over there in front of the Sunday school building.

  43. Just right over there in the grass.

  44. It says, Pastor Fred Stone, right?

  45. But then it also says right below that, as a reminder, if you'll notice, every member, a minister.

  46. I hope you'll see that more often and be reminded.

  47. Every time you come to church, I hope it reminds you that you, as well as those who stand up and do leadership type things,

  48. you are a minister of God's church.

  49. Now, I know that for many of us, it's not that easy to see ourselves that way.

  50. But let me show you from a couple of scriptures where God says we are all ministers.

  51. Starting with Ephesians chapter 4, verse 12.

    Ephesians 4:12

  52. Ephesians 4, 12.

  53. Now, focus on that verse, but let me begin reading in verse 11.

  54. It describes how God has given people to the church to lead and to guide and to equip.

  55. And so, beginning in verse 11, it says,

  56. And he himself, meaning God, gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers.

  57. And then it tells us why God gave those to the church.

  58. Verse 12,

  59. For the equipping of the saints, for the work of ministry, for the edifying or the building up of the body of Christ.

  60. Let me just stop here just for a moment.

  61. As I was young, growing up, and probably long before that,

  62. most people would have read that particular verse in scripture,

  63. seeing that it was the job of the minister of the church

  64. to equip the church and to do the work of ministry and to build up the body of Christ.

  65. I mean, that's just how we looked at it early on.

  66. As if God had put a comma after the building up or the equipping of the saints.

  67. But God didn't put a comma there.

  68. No, the job of the leaders of a church are to equip each of you,

  69. as a believer in Jesus Christ,

  70. to do the work of ministry,

  71. so that the body of Christ can be healthy and strong and effective and vibrant.

  72. That's how God designed it.

  73. And I give thanks for all of those who are leaders in this church.

  74. And they work tirelessly, well, I started to say tirelessly,

  75. but that's not necessarily true, is it?

  76. If you're a leader, I know that you do sometimes get weary,

  77. but you are already leading this church to do and to be what it is.

  78. And I'm so, so grateful.

  79. But God also speaks in places like 2 Corinthians

  80. about this ministry that He has given to every believer.

  81. This is 2 Corinthians 5, verse 18.

    2 Corinthians 5:18

  82. It talks about how God has reconciled us to Himself.

  83. But there's more to it.

  84. 2 Corinthians 5, 18 says it this way.

  85. Now, all things are of God or from God,

  86. who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ.

  87. And there's so much we could say about that.

  88. Thank God He did that.

  89. But it continues.

  90. And has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

  91. Reconciling.

  92. That's what God has done, isn't it?

  93. He has reached out in His love to us.

  94. Those of us who were just sinners,

  95. who did not trust in Him yet.

  96. He reached out because of His love for us.

  97. And He revealed Himself to us.

  98. And He called us to Himself.

  99. And He called us to believe in Him

  100. and trust Him for salvation.

  101. That's what He called us to.

  102. But then, when we responded by faith,

  103. He also said that needs to continue.

  104. There are others who need to be reconciled.

  105. And I want to give you, the believer,

  106. the ministry of reconciliation.

  107. Now, it is true that we don't reconcile people to God.

  108. It would be great if we could.

  109. I know some relatives that I have

  110. that if I could reconcile them to God,

  111. I would do it right now.

  112. Knowing that they would have a good standing of faith in God.

  113. But I can't do that.

  114. Only God is able to reconcile things

  115. so that we have a right standing before Him.

  116. But, we can bring people toward God

  117. that He may reconcile them

  118. if they'll respond in faith.

  119. In a very real sense,

  120. what God has called us to be

  121. are bridge builders.

  122. Bridge builders.

  123. In fact, the Bible actually tells us

  124. that we are a kingdom of priests.

  125. I won't go into that passage,

  126. but I just want you to know,

  127. not only does God call you to ministry,

  128. or to be a minister,

  129. He's called you to be a priest.

  130. You know what the word priest actually means?

  131. That's where you get the word in Latin.

  132. It's pontifex.

  133. You know what it really means?

  134. A bridge builder.

  135. That's what a priest does.

  136. He drills bridges.

  137. Not literal bridges,

  138. but spiritual bridges

  139. so that those who do not yet know God

  140. in a personal way through faith

  141. may find a way,

  142. may somehow be led toward God

  143. by someone who knows Him.

  144. That's how we are bridge builders.

  145. In fact, more deeply,

  146. we are the bridge.

  147. For many people to come to know God

  148. by trusting Him,

  149. by faith.

  150. Bridge builders.

  151. The ministry of reconciliation.

  152. But do you see

  153. how this ministry is almost formed

  154. by two bookends?

  155. Ministry of all believers

  156. is about building up the church

  157. and reconciling people to God

  158. so that they may have eternal life.

  159. But there's a word of warning

  160. and it comes really from

  161. a young man named Matt Carter.

  162. He's a pastor out in Texas

  163. from Austin Stone Church.

  164. And he said this,

  165. I found this.

  166. I thought it might be helpful

  167. for you to see it.

  168. The church, any church,

  169. won't grow in a biblically healthy way.

  170. It will not happen

  171. unless

  172. each part of the body,

  173. meaning the congregation,

  174. is fulfilling their personal calling

  175. to the Great Commission.

  176. The personal call

  177. of ministry to

  178. the Great Commission.

  179. Now just a reminder,

  180. when he says the body,

  181. he's talking about the body of Christ.

  182. Now, the body of Christ

  183. is the group of believers

  184. all around the world.

  185. But more locally,

  186. it's this congregation.

  187. And the congregation

  188. that I guess is still meeting,

  189. I don't know what time they're out,

  190. the Methodist Church over here

  191. and the Presbyterian Church down here

  192. and the Church of God down there

  193. and all these other local congregations

  194. are also

  195. the body

  196. of Christ.

  197. It's that

  198. gathering of believers

  199. that

  200. trust in God

  201. and have trusted Him

  202. for salvation.

  203. Each

  204. part of the body

  205. fulfilling

  206. their personal calling

  207. to the Great Commission.

  208. Now,

  209. basically,

  210. the Bible is saying

  211. that we're body parts.

  212. If we're,

  213. if this is the body,

  214. you're a part of it.

  215. A very,

  216. very important part

  217. of this

  218. particular body

  219. of Christ.

  220. Paul uses

  221. a whole chapter

  222. of Scripture

  223. to talk about this.

  224. In Romans,

  225. excuse me,

  226. in 1 Corinthians 12.

  227. 1 Corinthians 12,

  228. whole chapter.

  229. Now,

  230. I'm not going to read

  231. the whole chapter,

  232. but I challenge you

  233. sometime this afternoon,

  234. maybe after your nap,

  235. read

  236. 1 Corinthians 12.

  237. He's talking about

  238. spiritual gifts,

  239. those gifts

  240. that are given

  241. to every believer

  242. through the Holy Spirit.

  243. And let me just

  244. begin reading

  245. in verse 4

  246. of 1 Corinthians 12.

  247. Paul says

  248. there are

  249. diversities of gifts,

  250. but it's the same spirit.

  251. There are differences

  252. of ministries,

  253. but the same Lord.

  254. There are diversities

  255. of activities,

  256. but it's the same God

  257. who works all in all.

  258. But the manifestation

  259. of the Spirit

  260. is given to each one

  261. for the profit

  262. of all.

  263. The whole congregation,

  264. this particular body.

  265. And then he begins

  266. to name some of them.

  267. Now,

  268. when I read these,

  269. I want you to listen

  270. carefully to see

  271. if anything sounds

  272. familiar to your own

  273. gifts,

  274. passions,

  275. strengths,

  276. or skills.

  277. Listen to this.

  278. For to one

  279. is given the word

  280. of wisdom

  281. through the Spirit.

  282. To another,

  283. the word of knowledge

  284. by that same Spirit.

  285. To another,

  286. the gift is faith

  287. by the same Spirit.

  288. To another,

  289. gifts of healings,

  290. by the same Spirit.

  291. Another,

  292. the working of miracles.

  293. To another,

  294. prophecy.

  295. To another,

  296. discerning of spirits.

  297. And to another,

  298. different kinds of tongues.

  299. And to another,

  300. the interpretation

  301. of tongues.

  302. Now,

  303. I know that many of you

  304. have done a study

  305. of spiritual gifts,

  306. and you're very familiar

  307. with all of these.

  308. And there are good resources

  309. on the internet

  310. and through books

  311. and CDs.

  312. CDs.

  313. Does anybody still

  314. use CDs?

  315. Maybe a podcast

  316. or something somewhere?

  317. But I encourage you,

  318. look more deeply.

  319. But this is a short list,

  320. isn't it?

  321. I don't think God

  322. ever intended on

  323. this representing

  324. all the gifts.

  325. In fact,

  326. even in Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  327. chapter 12,

  328. you'll find that

  329. he lists even more.

  330. Romans 12.

  331. He talks about

  332. having gifts.

  333. This is verse 6

  334. and following.

  335. Having then gifts

  336. differing according

  337. to the grace

  338. that is given to us.

  339. Listen to this.

  340. Let us use them.

  341. Sounds like a biblical command.

  342. So he said,

  343. if it's prophecy,

  344. let us prophesy

  345. in proportion to our faith.

  346. Or is it ministry?

  347. Let us use it

  348. in our ministering.

  349. He who teaches,

  350. use your gift

  351. in teaching.

  352. He who exhorts

  353. or encourages.

  354. He who gives.

  355. There are some

  356. who are especially blessed

  357. to give

  358. with liberality.

  359. He who leads,

  360. lead with diligence.

  361. He who shows mercy,

  362. do it with cheerfulness.

  363. Now again,

  364. that's a short list

  365. because there are

  366. many gifts

  367. that are not necessarily

  368. just named

  369. specifically in Scripture.

  370. You see people

  371. every Sunday

  372. who are using

  373. a gift

  374. when they sing

  375. or play an instrument

  376. up here.

  377. That's a gift

  378. that they use

  379. for the glory of God.

  380. It's not listed here.

  381. But we all know

  382. that it's part

  383. of the giftedness

  384. that God

  385. has given to us.

  386. The gifts

  387. can be

  388. wide variety.

  389. I was told this morning,

  390. I did not know this

  391. until this morning,

  392. that Ray Reese

  393. had a gift

  394. of woodworking.

  395. Somebody told me

  396. he made that.

  397. I mean,

  398. literally made it.

  399. Is that a gift

  400. that he could use

  401. for the glory of God?

  402. Absolutely.

  403. What do you do well?

  404. What do you enjoy doing?

  405. What is your passion?

  406. What is your,

  407. what skill do you have

  408. that you could use

  409. to build up

  410. the body of Christ

  411. and to bring people

  412. toward God

  413. so that they may

  414. be reconciled?

  415. Whatever it is

  416. that you have

  417. that comes

  418. from God's spirit

  419. as a gift,

  420. use it.

  421. It doesn't even

  422. have to be named

  423. right here

  424. in these short verses.

  425. Make sure you know

  426. what it is.

  427. Make sure you're willing

  428. to use it.

  429. Well, let's get back

  430. to this idea

  431. of the Great Commission.

  432. Let me show you

  433. another slide

  434. by Matt Carter.

  435. I sometimes

  436. just call it

  437. the mission

  438. and it looks like

  439. that's what he is

  440. doing as well.

  441. This is what he says

  442. and I agree with him

  443. wholeheartedly.

  444. The responsibility

  445. for the mission

  446. that I'm talking about

  447. doesn't,

  448. and I would add

  449. the word just,

  450. doesn't just fall

  451. on the shoulders

  452. of the pastors,

  453. but every person

  454. in the church

  455. that names

  456. the name of Christ.

  457. The responsibility

  458. for the mission

  459. is not just

  460. for those

  461. who stand up front

  462. and do things.

  463. The responsibility

  464. for God's mission

  465. is yours

  466. from the youngest

  467. to the oldest.

  468. It's still yours.

  469. Whether you're young

  470. and have a lot of energy

  471. or whether you're tired

  472. and you want to quit

  473. and sit down,

  474. you still have

  475. the responsibility

  476. for the mission.

  477. Now, I don't know

  478. if anybody's asking

  479. the question or not,

  480. but let me ask this.

  481. But isn't the Great Commission

  482. given to the church?

  483. Haven't we talked

  484. about that?

  485. If you've been in church,

  486. you know it's been

  487. talked about all the time.

  488. The Great Commission

  489. or the mission

  490. of the church.

  491. We put it in the context

  492. of the church.

  493. Well, the answer

  494. to the question is,

  495. yes,

  496. it has been given

  497. to the church.

  498. But no,

  499. it's not just simply

  500. to the church

  501. as a whole.

  502. In other words,

  503. if it was just

  504. to the church,

  505. you could say,

  506. well, I'll just give

  507. my money to the church

  508. and let them

  509. do the mission.

  510. That'd be easy,

  511. wouldn't it?

  512. In fact,

  513. the truth is,

  514. many people do that.

  515. Let somebody else

  516. do it.

  517. But no,

  518. God's given

  519. to every believer

  520. ministry

  521. of building up

  522. the body,

  523. reconciling

  524. the world

  525. to Christ.

  526. I think our problem

  527. has been this.

  528. And it's a problem

  529. that I think

  530. has been true

  531. for a long time.

  532. Is that our definition

  533. of church

  534. can sometimes

  535. hinder or distort

  536. our view

  537. of God's call

  538. to ministry,

  539. meaning our personal

  540. call to ministry.

  541. You know,

  542. it's when we say,

  543. where are you going

  544. this morning?

  545. I'm going to church.

  546. What are they doing

  547. up there at the church?

  548. Right?

  549. We use that language

  550. and there's really

  551. nothing terribly wrong

  552. with it,

  553. except that church

  554. began to mean

  555. building

  556. or organization.

  557. When God

  558. never intended

  559. for church

  560. to be some

  561. brick and mortar

  562. and beautiful

  563. decorations

  564. and stuff,

  565. I mean,

  566. he's not against

  567. this by any means,

  568. but church

  569. is you.

  570. In fact,

  571. you don't go

  572. to church,

  573. the church

  574. comes here.

  575. You are the church.

  576. I mean,

  577. you know,

  578. the,

  579. I don't even know

  580. my fingers

  581. are letting me,

  582. you know,

  583. the,

  584. here's the church

  585. and here's the steeple

  586. and open.

  587. Well,

  588. no,

  589. actually,

  590. this is the church.

  591. All the people.

  592. So we need to get

  593. our head around

  594. the fact that we

  595. are the church

  596. and as the church,

  597. we are responsible

  598. for the mission

  599. that God has given

  600. to every single believer.

  601. it's not just

  602. an organization,

  603. it's more like

  604. an organism,

  605. a body of people

  606. working together.

  607. Some of you are hands

  608. and some are feet,

  609. some are mouths,

  610. you know them,

  611. they're always talking.

  612. Thank God

  613. that some of you

  614. are ears

  615. because you're willing

  616. to listen.

  617. Some of you can smell

  618. a problem.

  619. Some of you see

  620. a little bit further

  621. than others

  622. about what we need

  623. to do ahead,

  624. like next year

  625. or something.

  626. You see,

  627. we all have a part

  628. in this body

  629. and that's the way

  630. God designed it.

  631. We're an organism.

  632. Imagine with me

  633. just for a moment.

  634. And I know

  635. that God is blessed,

  636. First Baptist,

  637. in really,

  638. I think,

  639. unusual ways.

  640. But you are not

  641. all that you could be.

  642. I think it's probably true

  643. that I've heard it

  644. most of my life

  645. that in any given church

  646. about 20% of the people

  647. do about 80%

  648. of the work.

  649. Now,

  650. I don't know

  651. if that percentage

  652. is correct.

  653. I really have no idea,

  654. but I do know this.

  655. And this is from,

  656. I don't know,

  657. 30-something years

  658. in ministry.

  659. In any church

  660. you go to,

  661. it's a few people

  662. who do most

  663. of what needs

  664. to be done.

  665. It's not the majority.

  666. I don't know

  667. why that's true.

  668. It shouldn't be.

  669. And I don't even know

  670. if it's true

  671. for First Baptist.

  672. But here's what I do know,

  673. that even in your church,

  674. most people

  675. are not fulfilling

  676. their call of God

  677. to do the mission

  678. of the church.

  679. If it were true,

  680. you'd have to have

  681. more room.

  682. If it were true,

  683. you'd have to have

  684. more services.

  685. If it were true,

  686. you'd be having

  687. so many people,

  688. you'd have to start

  689. another church

  690. on the other side

  691. of town

  692. as a,

  693. what do they call,

  694. like a satellite church

  695. somewhere else.

  696. Do you hear

  697. what I'm saying?

  698. If every one of you

  699. were to take

  700. your responsibility

  701. seriously

  702. and a full commitment

  703. to it,

  704. God would grow

  705. this church

  706. in ways that

  707. you never imagined.

  708. That's how I know.

  709. So what if

  710. every believer

  711. read the Great Commission

  712. as that personal call

  713. to make disciples?

  714. What a transformation

  715. would happen.

  716. What a revival

  717. would happen.

  718. At my last church,

  719. they asked me one time,

  720. they said,

  721. what do you think

  722. it's going to take

  723. for Griffith Baptist Church

  724. to experience revival?

  725. And I told them

  726. very simply

  727. and plainly

  728. and they didn't

  729. necessarily appreciate it

  730. but I said,

  731. when every member

  732. does what God

  733. told them to do

  734. in the scriptures.

  735. And they said,

  736. maybe,

  737. maybe there's something else.

  738. Don't we need

  739. some revival services

  740. or something?

  741. And I said,

  742. no.

  743. If every member

  744. would do just what

  745. God tells them to do

  746. in the Bible,

  747. then you couldn't

  748. contain

  749. the revival

  750. that would happen.

  751. Let me finish

  752. by saying this.

  753. And by the way,

  754. I think that somebody

  755. told me that we can

  756. stop at around 1230.

  757. They may not

  758. have been correct.

  759. Don't start leaving.

  760. I'm not going that long.

  761. I promise.

  762. Let me just share

  763. some observations.

  764. And these are just

  765. observations from

  766. having been in ministry

  767. from this side

  768. of the pulpit

  769. and having been

  770. around God's people

  771. for a long time.

  772. This is observations

  773. that I think

  774. may help you

  775. understand

  776. what God is saying

  777. in the scriptures

  778. we've looked at.

  779. Number one observation

  780. is this.

  781. You,

  782. in order to make

  783. disciples,

  784. you have to

  785. be a disciple.

  786. Now,

  787. I may be wrong

  788. in this.

  789. I can't say this

  790. that I'm right

  791. 100%.

  792. But not every

  793. believer

  794. is a disciple.

  795. There are believers

  796. who will come,

  797. I saw some faces.

  798. There are people

  799. who truly trust Christ

  800. for their salvation.

  801. 100%.

  802. 100%.

  803. And they'll come

  804. to church

  805. and they'll sit

  806. and they may even

  807. smile at the preacher

  808. sometimes and shake

  809. his hand on the way out

  810. but they never

  811. make any other

  812. kind of contribution

  813. to the health

  814. of the church.

  815. To the mission

  816. of God.

  817. They believe in God.

  818. They believe in Christ.

  819. They're saved.

  820. But that's all.

  821. They're basically

  822. pew sitters.

  823. And that's not

  824. a bad thing.

  825. It's good to come.

  826. But what if that's

  827. all you do?

  828. No,

  829. a disciple is really

  830. a learner.

  831. It's someone

  832. who faithfully

  833. follows

  834. a leader

  835. or a mentor.

  836. A disciple

  837. is someone

  838. who's learning

  839. and growing

  840. and changing.

  841. That's a real

  842. biblical disciple.

  843. And you can

  844. disagree on the

  845. definition

  846. if you need to.

  847. In fact,

  848. thank God

  849. for the guys

  850. up in the booth.

  851. I saw a picture

  852. this morning

  853. between services

  854. that I wanted

  855. to show to you.

  856. And I want you to

  857. see this picture

  858. that I found.

  859. I hope you can

  860. see it all.

  861. Yeah.

  862. It says this.

  863. I'm going to have

  864. to read it

  865. because I haven't

  866. met.

  867. A disciple

  868. is someone

  869. who has moved

  870. from being

  871. the recipient

  872. of the church's

  873. mission

  874. to being

  875. responsible

  876. for the church's

  877. mission.

  878. Would you

  879. consider yourself

  880. a disciple

  881. or just a

  882. Christian

  883. who attends

  884. church?

  885. If you really

  886. want to take

  887. seriously this

  888. mission to

  889. make disciples,

  890. then make sure

  891. you are

  892. a disciple.

  893. In fact,

  894. you need to be

  895. a disciple

  896. that is learning

  897. to grow

  898. in Christ's

  899. likeness.

  900. What does

  901. God want

  902. from every

  903. disciple?

  904. To be more

  905. and more

  906. like Jesus.

  907. To resemble

  908. him

  909. more

  910. and more.

  911. We can't

  912. do it alone.

  913. That's why

  914. God gave us

  915. the Spirit

  916. and that's

  917. why God

  918. gave us

  919. other Christians

  920. to encourage

  921. us.

  922. But are you

  923. growing more

  924. in Christ's

  925. likeness?

  926. Do you

  927. resemble him

  928. more?

  929. Just read

  930. the scriptures

  931. and it'll

  932. tell you

  933. what he's

  934. like.

  935. Just spend

  936. time with

  937. God in

  938. prayer.

  939. Spend time

  940. reading his

  941. word.

  942. Spend time

  943. putting your

  944. gift into

  945. practice.

  946. You become

  947. more like

  948. him.

  949. Little by

  950. little.

  951. It's a

  952. supernatural

  953. happening.

  954. But God

  955. has given

  956. us a

  957. great task

  958. in making

  959. disciples

  960. because he

  961. expects us

  962. not just

  963. to lead

  964. someone to

  965. Christ.

  966. There's more

  967. to it than

  968. just leading

  969. people to

  970. God.

  971. You need

  972. to continue

  973. your opportunity

  974. because when

  975. we make

  976. disciples we

  977. are supposed

  978. to make

  979. disciples who

  980. also make

  981. disciples.

  982. A quick

  983. word from

  984. 2 Timothy.

  985. Paul is

  986. talking to

  987. Timothy when

  988. he says

  989. this.

  990. He says

  991. Timothy the

  992. things that

  993. you have

  994. heard from

  995. me among

  996. many witnesses

  997. commit these

  998. to faithful

  999. men and

  1000. women.

  1001. Well that

  1002. makes sense

  1003. doesn't it?

  1004. What you've

  1005. heard from

  1006. me?

  1007. Pass it

  1008. on to

  1009. others.

  1010. But Paul

  1011. didn't stop

  1012. with that

  1013. word.

  1014. He says

  1015. commit them

  1016. to faithful

  1017. persons who

  1018. will be able

  1019. to teach

  1020. others also.

  1021. it's God's

  1022. great way of

  1023. multiplying the

  1024. ministry so

  1025. that we're not

  1026. just leading

  1027. people to

  1028. Christ and

  1029. not just

  1030. building up

  1031. the body

  1032. of Christ,

  1033. not just

  1034. bringing people

  1035. into a

  1036. reconciling

  1037. relationship

  1038. with God.

  1039. Those

  1040. disciples also

  1041. go and

  1042. make disciples

  1043. as well.

  1044. It's this

  1045. great process

  1046. that God

  1047. has set up.

  1048. So our

  1049. making

  1050. disciples

  1051. ministry

  1052. is never

  1053. ending.

  1054. It's

  1055. multiplying

  1056. in the way

  1057. that God

  1058. does it.

  1059. Another

  1060. observation is

  1061. this.

  1062. Making

  1063. disciples

  1064. can be done

  1065. within the

  1066. church schedule

  1067. by all

  1068. means.

  1069. It is

  1070. often done

  1071. within the

  1072. church schedule

  1073. in the

  1074. church building.

  1075. Thank God

  1076. for that.

  1077. Thank God

  1078. for the

  1079. Sunday school

  1080. classes that

  1081. are making

  1082. disciples and

  1083. the youth

  1084. ministry that's

  1085. making disciples.

  1086. Thank God

  1087. for Awana.

  1088. I was

  1089. amazed at

  1090. what God is

  1091. doing through

  1092. those children.

  1093. I was here

  1094. Wednesday night

  1095. at the big

  1096. celebration and

  1097. I just sat

  1098. back there and

  1099. was just

  1100. thankful and

  1101. amazed and

  1102. grateful for

  1103. what God is

  1104. doing.

  1105. All those

  1106. things are

  1107. happening within

  1108. the schedule in

  1109. this church.

  1110. But there are

  1111. opportunities beyond

  1112. this church.

  1113. In fact some

  1114. of those

  1115. opportunities may

  1116. be more

  1117. effective than

  1118. what happens

  1119. within the

  1120. church.

  1121. More effective

  1122. because it's

  1123. more personal.

  1124. What if you

  1125. take a

  1126. classmate that

  1127. you have been

  1128. talking to

  1129. lately and

  1130. begin that

  1131. process of

  1132. bringing them

  1133. toward God

  1134. with a

  1135. hopefully for

  1136. the end result

  1137. is to make

  1138. a disciple

  1139. that they

  1140. may become

  1141. a disciple

  1142. maker.

  1143. What about

  1144. a person at

  1145. work?

  1146. What about

  1147. a person out

  1148. on the golf

  1149. course or at

  1150. the lake or

  1151. wherever you

  1152. are?

  1153. Why not

  1154. use those

  1155. opportunities

  1156. outside of

  1157. church?

  1158. The truth is

  1159. there's a

  1160. number of

  1161. people in

  1162. this community

  1163. that will

  1164. never walk

  1165. into a

  1166. church on

  1167. their own.

  1168. They're just

  1169. not going to

  1170. do it.

  1171. But you can

  1172. go to

  1173. them.

  1174. I think

  1175. that's why

  1176. the Great

  1177. Commission

  1178. says,

  1179. go,

  1180. therefore,

  1181. not invite,

  1182. therefore.

  1183. It tells us

  1184. to go.

  1185. Use those

  1186. opportunities

  1187. beyond the

  1188. church services

  1189. to make

  1190. disciples.

  1191. The last

  1192. thing is

  1193. this.

  1194. Well,

  1195. actually,

  1196. I've got

  1197. two.

  1198. Very

  1199. quickly.

  1200. Are you

  1201. using your

  1202. natural

  1203. relationships

  1204. to make

  1205. disciples?

  1206. I know

  1207. that God

  1208. calls us

  1209. outside of

  1210. our comfort

  1211. zone sometimes.

  1212. I understand

  1213. that.

  1214. He needs

  1215. to.

  1216. Right?

  1217. The Bible

  1218. does say,

  1219. by the way,

  1220. spur one

  1221. another on

  1222. to good

  1223. works.

  1224. So,

  1225. sometimes it's

  1226. uncomfortable.

  1227. But why

  1228. not actually

  1229. use your

  1230. comfort zone,

  1231. your natural

  1232. relationships

  1233. within your

  1234. family,

  1235. within your

  1236. friendship

  1237. circles?

  1238. in fact,

  1239. Fred,

  1240. Pastor Fred

  1241. handed out

  1242. the first

  1243. of the year

  1244. that concentric

  1245. circles of

  1246. concern.

  1247. Remember that?

  1248. Do you have

  1249. it in your

  1250. Bible?

  1251. It's in the

  1252. front of

  1253. mine.

  1254. That's using

  1255. natural

  1256. relationships.

  1257. I know of

  1258. people that I

  1259. can think of

  1260. right now that

  1261. I want to use a

  1262. very natural

  1263. relationship to

  1264. begin moving

  1265. them closer to

  1266. God.

  1267. And you have

  1268. people like that

  1269. too.

  1270. You'd love to

  1271. see them come

  1272. to know Christ

  1273. and maybe even

  1274. come to church.

  1275. Use those

  1276. natural relationships.

  1277. It's a great

  1278. place to start.

  1279. That's within

  1280. your comfort zone.

  1281. So why not?

  1282. One more thing

  1283. that I want to

  1284. share with you.

  1285. It's really good

  1286. news.

  1287. You ready?

  1288. If you were to

  1289. take all this

  1290. seriously and

  1291. say, I want to

  1292. do that.

  1293. I want to be

  1294. what the Bible

  1295. describes.

  1296. Here's the good

  1297. news.

  1298. You ready?

  1299. You don't have

  1300. to be perfect

  1301. to start.

  1302. I know what

  1303. it's like.

  1304. I know most

  1305. of you.

  1306. I still say

  1307. that.

  1308. I don't really

  1309. want to do

  1310. that until I

  1311. get a little

  1312. bit better at

  1313. something.

  1314. I don't want

  1315. to embarrass

  1316. myself because

  1317. I'm not really

  1318. that prepared.

  1319. I want to

  1320. study some

  1321. more.

  1322. Can't we

  1323. have some

  1324. more courses

  1325. at church

  1326. before I try

  1327. and do this?

  1328. Can't we have

  1329. another program?

  1330. Can't we have

  1331. another something?

  1332. We're always

  1333. waiting to where

  1334. something more

  1335. than we are

  1336. to start

  1337. being a

  1338. disciple

  1339. maker.

  1340. Truth is,

  1341. he needs you

  1342. now.

  1343. What if we

  1344. don't have

  1345. tomorrow?

  1346. The time is

  1347. now.

  1348. What does the

  1349. old cartoon

  1350. used to say?

  1351. Time's a

  1352. wasting.

  1353. It's time to

  1354. be busy about

  1355. the father's

  1356. business.

  1357. Now.

  1358. The world

  1359. cannot wait.

  1360. They need you

  1361. to share the

  1362. good news

  1363. of Jesus

  1364. Christ.

  1365. And to move

  1366. people toward

  1367. God that he

  1368. may reconcile

  1369. them and

  1370. make them his

  1371. child.

  1372. That they may

  1373. become a

  1374. disciple who

  1375. makes disciples.

  1376. Are you

  1377. willing to

  1378. embrace this

  1379. truth?

  1380. To refresh

  1381. your commitment

  1382. to this

  1383. call of God

  1384. given to us

  1385. and his

  1386. word.

  1387. I know

  1388. many of

  1389. you work

  1390. so hard

  1391. at doing

  1392. what God

  1393. has called

  1394. you to do.

  1395. And I

  1396. thank God

  1397. for you.

  1398. But most

  1399. of us have

  1400. room for

  1401. improvement.

  1402. Room for

  1403. growth.

  1404. We can make

  1405. that fresh

  1406. commitment.

  1407. Would you

  1408. consider doing

  1409. that today?

  1410. I'm going to

  1411. pray just for

  1412. a moment and

  1413. ask you to

  1414. pray along

  1415. with me.

  1416. and maybe

  1417. my words

  1418. just simply

  1419. don't fit

  1420. what your

  1421. heart is

  1422. telling you.

  1423. So just

  1424. ignore my

  1425. words if you

  1426. need to and

  1427. pray your

  1428. prayer to

  1429. God.

  1430. Refresh that

  1431. commitment to

  1432. being a

  1433. minister in

  1434. God's kingdom.

  1435. If you

  1436. send

  1437. me

  1438. to

  1439. the

  1440. node

  1441. of

  1442. the

  1443. hell

  1444. of

  1445. the

  1446. of

  1447. God's kingdom.

  1448. And I

  1449. ask

  1450. you

  1451. and
