  1. I'm surprised by the way that God graciously works in your life when you've done everything

  2. the wrong way, been rebellious, been hard-hearted, been stubborn, just plain disobedient.

  3. Sometimes I just get in awe of how God puts up with me, how He shows grace.

  4. I am so thankful for His grace.

  5. I hope you are as well.

  6. Well, that's what we're going to look at this morning in Jonah chapter 1, God's surprising grace.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  7. And the first thing we're going to look at today is that God sometimes uses unbelievers

  8. to accomplish His gracious purpose.

  9. I want you to look with me.

  10. If you would, open your Bible.

  11. We're in Jonah chapter 1.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  12. We have read the entire chapter several times, part of it several times.

  13. We're going to read more today, but I don't want to read the whole section again.

  14. I want you to think with me and look at verse 5.

  15. Think about the actions of the sailors on the ship with Jonah.

  16. If you haven't been here, if you're not familiar with the story, Jonah was God's prophet.

  17. He was called by God to go to a certain place and preach.

  18. He didn't.

  19. He went the opposite direction.

  20. And as a part of going the opposite direction, He boarded a ship that would take him far away.

  21. But then God hurled a storm at the ship to stop Jonah.

  22. When the storm first struck, these pagan sailors prayed to their own false gods.

  23. When Jonah was identified as the guilty one,

  24. they began to question Him.

  25. Look with me in verse 7 and 8.

  26. And they said to one another,

  27. Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  28. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

  29. Then they said to Him,

  30. Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  31. What is your occupation?

  32. Where do you come from?

  33. What is your country?

  34. And of what people are you?

  35. I want you to look at how Jonah responded.

  36. I want you to think about his response and his description of God and how it affected these sailors.

  37. I'm going to put this on the screen, verses 9 and 10 now.

  38. And He said to them,

  39. I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.

  40. Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to Him,

  41. What is this that you have done?

  42. For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord because he had told them.

  43. I want you to note that Jonah identified himself as a Hebrew, part of the people of Israel.

  44. He identified himself as a Hebrew.

  45. And his God as, look at it, the Lord.

  46. And that is a translation of God's special covenant name, Yahweh.

  47. God's holy name.

  48. Jonah identified God by that name.

  49. And then look at their response.

  50. They were terrified.

  51. When they heard he was a Hebrew, that their God, his God was Yahweh.

  52. Why would they do that?

  53. Why would such hardened men most likely be afraid of this Hebrew who served the Lord God?

  54. Well, many commentators believe these sailors had heard about the people of Israel.

  55. They'd heard about Israel's God.

  56. And it makes sense.

  57. They're professional sailors.

  58. They sailed the Mediterranean Sea.

  59. This trip that they're on right now began in Joppa, which is not far from Israel.

  60. Richard Phillips, in his commentary, gives us a good explanation for why these sailors responded with fear

  61. when they heard Jonah mention the Lord, that name.

  62. Look at it.

  63. The mariners likely would have heard about the Hebrews and their frightening God.

  64. He was the God who broke Pharaoh's power in order to set his people free

  65. and who parted the waters of the Red Sea for the Hebrews to pass through.

  66. But then drowned the pursuing Egyptians.

  67. This was the stern God who took his people into Canaan with such frightening power.

  68. Therefore, they realized that this was a great God, this God of the Hebrews.

  69. And it was this God, not a weak God, who was pursuing them for the sake of Jonah.

  70. Here they are in the midst of a hurricane type storm.

  71. They're scared to death of that.

  72. And then they're described with even a heightened sense of fear

  73. when Jonah identifies himself as part of the people of God

  74. and calls God by that covenant name.

  75. Even though they knew Jonah is rebelling against this God,

  76. they still revere him, so to speak, by asking him,

  77. what should we do?

  78. And when Jonah told them that the only way for the sea to calm

  79. and for them to save themselves was to throw him overboard.

  80. But I want you to look at what they said in verse 13.

  81. If I can find it.

  82. Jonah has identified himself and his God.

  83. They have confidence he knows what he's talking about.

  84. And so they ask him, what should we do?

  85. And he tells them very clearly.

  86. It wasn't an answer he wanted to tell them.

  87. He was actually being truthful.

  88. But instead of taking this stranger

  89. who had brought this storm on them,

  90. caused them to lose their cargo

  91. and maybe going to lose their lives,

  92. instead of them gladly throwing him overboard,

  93. they did their best to row out of the storm.

  94. Now think about that.

  95. It seems that their discovery of God

  96. caused them to show Jonah mercy.

  97. Mercy is a quality of God.

  98. Mercy is one of the characteristics of a Christian

  99. that Jesus described in the Sermon on the Mount

  100. in the Beatitudes.

  101. If we have a right relationship with God,

  102. if we want to please God,

  103. we're going to have a merciful heart

  104. and desire to show mercy to people

  105. instead of just being cruel,

  106. just giving people what they deserve.

  107. And you see it in these pagans

  108. right as they first become aware of God.

  109. That's powerful.

  110. God's doing a work in these men's lives right here.

  111. And we see it in the way they treated Jonah.

  112. I mean, be honest.

  113. If you'd have been there,

  114. you think you're going to die,

  115. and some guy you don't know,

  116. you don't care about,

  117. you think this guy,

  118. you know, he's running from this powerful God

  119. we've heard about.

  120. He says,

  121. if we want to see the calm,

  122. throw him overboard.

  123. Wouldn't you throw him overboard?

  124. I'd throw you overboard if it was you.

  125. You'd throw me overboard if it was me in that setting.

  126. But they didn't Jonah.

  127. God used these unbelievers,

  128. pagans,

  129. idol worshipers at this time

  130. to show grace to Jonah.

  131. We're going to see later on

  132. the actual way of grace

  133. was to throw him overboard.

  134. But right now, at the beginning,

  135. they think the way of being gracious and merciful

  136. is to try to row out of the storm

  137. and avoid throwing him overboard.

  138. But finally, God shows these sailors

  139. they're wasting their time.

  140. They cannot outrun the storm.

  141. And so they've got a choice.

  142. Either throw him overboard

  143. or die themselves.

  144. So they decide to do it.

  145. But look at verses 14 and 15.

  146. They call out to God

  147. for mercy on themselves

  148. before they do it.

  149. Therefore,

  150. they called out to the Lord.

  151. O Lord,

  152. let us not perish

  153. for this man's life

  154. and lay not on us

  155. innocent blood.

  156. For you, O Lord,

  157. have done

  158. as it pleased you.

  159. That's their way of saying,

  160. this is your call, Lord.

  161. Don't blame us.

  162. Blame you.

  163. So they picked up Jonah

  164. and hurled him into the sea

  165. and the sea ceased

  166. from its raging.

  167. What I want us to see here

  168. is that God will do

  169. whatever it takes

  170. to change us

  171. if we are his child

  172. and he has determined

  173. to use us

  174. in a certain way.

  175. God will do whatever it takes

  176. if he is determined

  177. to use us

  178. in a certain way.

  179. God will do whatever it takes

  180. to cause us

  181. to change our mind

  182. if we are rebelling.

  183. God will do whatever it takes

  184. to make us willing

  185. to do it.

  186. God works through

  187. these unbelievers

  188. and God will work

  189. through unbelievers

  190. around us.

  191. God is never limited.

  192. There may be times

  193. in your life

  194. when you are not close

  195. to God,

  196. you are disobeying him,

  197. something is going on

  198. and you don't come

  199. to church

  200. because you think

  201. that's one way

  202. I can get away

  203. from being convicted.

  204. Maybe I can forget.

  205. Maybe the Lord

  206. will leave me alone

  207. so you don't come to church

  208. or you don't want

  209. to be around

  210. Christian people.

  211. Well, God could even

  212. work through

  213. pagans.

  214. God could even work

  215. through the worst people

  216. you know

  217. if he chooses to

  218. to touch you,

  219. to correct you,

  220. to bring you

  221. to the point

  222. where he wants you

  223. to be.

  224. God sometimes

  225. even uses miracles

  226. to get our attention.

  227. Look at number two,

  228. this point.

  229. God sometimes

  230. uses miraculous

  231. interventions

  232. to put us

  233. on the path

  234. he has chosen for us.

  235. This chapter

  236. begins and ends

  237. with a strong statement

  238. of how God

  239. sovereignly

  240. intervenes

  241. in Jonah's life

  242. to prevent him

  243. from escaping

  244. God's call.

  245. God first hurled

  246. a great storm

  247. at Jonah's ship

  248. that we've read about

  249. and talked about

  250. already in verse four

  251. and then in verse 17

  252. God appointed

  253. a great fish

  254. to rescue Jonah

  255. and prevent him

  256. from drowning.

  257. Look at that.

  258. And the Lord

  259. appointed a great fish

  260. to swallow up Jonah.

  261. That's what we're

  262. going to start

  263. looking at next week.

  264. But these two

  265. miraculous interventions

  266. make it clear

  267. that when God

  268. chooses us

  269. to carry out

  270. his plan

  271. he's going

  272. to so

  273. manipulate

  274. things in our

  275. lives

  276. that we will

  277. eventually

  278. be willing

  279. to do

  280. his will.

  281. Now I want

  282. to pause here

  283. and be clear

  284. about this matter

  285. of disobeying God.

  286. we can disobey

  287. God.

  288. Jonah

  289. disobeyed God.

  290. Sometimes God

  291. allows us

  292. to disobey him

  293. as his children

  294. and miss out

  295. on the blessing

  296. that we would

  297. have received

  298. if we had

  299. obeyed him.

  300. We can see

  301. an example

  302. of that

  303. in the book

  304. of Acts

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  305. chapter 13

  306. when Mark

  307. the writer

  308. of the second

  309. gospel

  310. he took off

  311. on the first

  312. mission trip

  313. of the New Testament

  314. church

  315. in Acts 13

  316. he went with

  317. Paul and Barnabas

  318. but he didn't

  319. go far

  320. he quit.

  321. You can read

  322. about it.

  323. He quit.

  324. He turned around

  325. and he went

  326. home.

  327. He abandoned

  328. his mission team.

  329. Well Paul

  330. was offended

  331. by that

  332. angered

  333. by that

  334. and later

  335. on

  336. Mark

  337. wanted to

  338. go on a

  339. second trip

  340. with Paul

  341. and Barnabas

  342. and Paul

  343. said you

  344. ain't going.

  345. You quit

  346. on me

  347. one time

  348. you will

  349. not quit

  350. on me

  351. a second

  352. time.

  353. Well Barnabas

  354. was more

  355. compassionate

  356. more merciful

  357. maybe.

  358. He wanted

  359. Mark

  360. to go.

  361. He wanted

  362. to give him

  363. a second

  364. chance.

  365. Paul

  366. didn't

  367. back down

  368. and their

  369. disagreement

  370. was so

  371. strong

  372. over Mark

  373. that they

  374. split.

  375. Paul went

  376. one way

  377. and took

  378. Silas

  379. Barnabas

  380. took Mark

  381. and went

  382. another way.

  383. You can read

  384. about that

  385. in Acts 15.

  386. Here's what

  387. I want us

  388. to see.

  389. Mark's

  390. failure

  391. quitting

  392. the first

  393. missionary

  394. trip.

  395. It had

  396. some serious

  397. consequences.

  398. It led

  399. to the

  400. breakup

  401. of the

  402. Paul

  403. Barnabas

  404. mission

  405. team.

  406. The original

  407. mission

  408. team.

  409. And then

  410. Mark missed

  411. out on

  412. the blessings

  413. of seeing

  414. how God

  415. used his

  416. team

  417. to save

  418. many people's

  419. lives.

  420. To start

  421. new churches.

  422. Mark could

  423. have been a

  424. part of that

  425. but he

  426. wasn't

  427. because of

  428. his failure.

  429. God

  430. is an

  431. example of

  432. how God

  433. sometimes

  434. allows us

  435. to disobey

  436. him.

  437. And he

  438. uses other

  439. people to

  440. do what

  441. he originally

  442. wanted us

  443. to do.

  444. And the

  445. result will

  446. always be

  447. that we

  448. miss out

  449. on being

  450. used of

  451. God to

  452. bless somebody

  453. else.

  454. And we

  455. miss out on

  456. being blessed

  457. ourselves by

  458. being obedient

  459. to God.

  460. But God

  461. does not

  462. always allow

  463. us to

  464. disobey

  465. him and

  466. get by

  467. with it.

  468. I want

  469. you to

  470. hear this.

  471. We've

  472. talked in

  473. some of

  474. the other

  475. messages about

  476. how Jonah

  477. disobeyed.

  478. Mark did.

  479. We have.

  480. We've

  481. suffered for

  482. it.

  483. We've missed

  484. out on some

  485. things most

  486. likely.

  487. But there

  488. are times

  489. when God

  490. is not going

  491. to allow

  492. us to

  493. disobey

  494. him or

  495. keep on

  496. disobeying

  497. him because

  498. he is

  499. determined to

  500. use us.

  501. Let's take

  502. some examples.

  503. Moses.

  504. God

  505. raised up

  506. Moses,

  507. called him

  508. to be

  509. his

  510. spokesman,

  511. the

  512. deliverer

  513. of the

  514. people of

  515. Israel

  516. from Egyptian

  517. bondage.

  518. But a lot

  519. of you know

  520. the story.

  521. At first,

  522. Moses,

  523. he didn't

  524. want to go.

  525. He didn't

  526. want to be

  527. that.

  528. He didn't

  529. want to do

  530. that.

  531. He made

  532. excuses.

  533. But God

  534. would not

  535. accept his

  536. excuses.

  537. God had

  538. chosen him

  539. for that

  540. assignment.

  541. And God

  542. made sure

  543. that Moses

  544. fulfilled it.

  545. Paul,

  546. the apostle,

  547. he was

  548. chosen by

  549. God.

  550. He says in

  551. Galatians

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  552. chapter 1,

  553. from his

  554. mother's

  555. womb.

  556. Before he

  557. ever entered

  558. this world,

  559. God had a

  560. plan for

  561. his life.

  562. He was

  563. going to be

  564. a great

  565. missionary,

  566. a great

  567. evangelist,

  568. great church

  569. planter.

  570. God was

  571. even going

  572. to use

  573. him to

  574. write a

  575. large portion

  576. of the

  577. New Testament.

  578. But Paul

  579. began his

  580. adult life

  581. as an

  582. enemy of

  583. Jesus Christ

  584. and the

  585. church.

  586. He was

  587. well known

  588. in the

  589. church,

  590. before he

  591. became a

  592. Christian,

  593. as one

  594. who will

  595. track you

  596. down,

  597. and have

  598. you put in

  599. prison,

  600. and possibly

  601. even executed,

  602. all because

  603. you are a

  604. follower of

  605. Jesus.

  606. But when

  607. the Lord

  608. got ready

  609. to use

  610. him,

  611. the Lord

  612. miraculously

  613. broke into

  614. his life,

  615. and you can

  616. read about

  617. this in

  618. Acts 9,

  619. God literally

  620. knocked him

  621. to the

  622. ground and

  623. blinded him

  624. for a period

  625. of time

  626. because God

  627. was serious

  628. about getting

  629. his attention

  630. and changing

  631. everything about

  632. his life

  633. because God

  634. was going to

  635. use him

  636. in a

  637. tremendous

  638. way as

  639. one of the

  640. early leaders

  641. of the

  642. church.

  643. God can

  644. intervene in

  645. your life and

  646. mine at any

  647. time.

  648. If it requires

  649. disciplining us

  650. severely, he

  651. will and

  652. just do

  653. whatever it

  654. takes to

  655. cause us

  656. to want

  657. to obey

  658. him.

  659. That's what

  660. God's doing

  661. with Jonah in

  662. chapter 1 and

  663. 2, and we're

  664. going to read in

  665. chapter 3 a

  666. little bit later

  667. on that when

  668. God called

  669. Jonah the

  670. second time to

  671. go and preach

  672. to Neva, he

  673. went and he

  674. did not argue.

  675. But just

  676. think, that

  677. was after his

  678. painful experience

  679. of being thrown

  680. off a ship in

  681. the middle of

  682. the storm,

  683. nearly drowning

  684. and spending

  685. three days and

  686. three nights

  687. stuck inside

  688. a great fish.

  689. I want to

  690. encourage you.

  691. Always

  692. listen

  693. when God

  694. speaks.

  695. And God

  696. speaks to us

  697. through his

  698. word.

  699. That's the

  700. clearest way he

  701. speaks to us

  702. today.

  703. If you're a

  704. Christian, he

  705. speaks through

  706. his spirit who

  707. indwells you.

  708. God speaks

  709. through wise

  710. people he's put

  711. into your life.

  712. God speaks to

  713. us in all

  714. different kinds

  715. of ways.

  716. And when he

  717. speaks, we

  718. need to listen

  719. with the idea,

  720. I want to know

  721. God's will because

  722. I want to do

  723. God's will.

  724. Paul tells us

  725. at the end of

  726. Romans 12,

  727. 2,

  728. that God's

  729. doing God's

  730. will will be

  731. good for us

  732. because God's

  733. will is good

  734. and acceptable

  735. and perfect.

  736. He describes it

  737. that way.

  738. Well, think about

  739. it this way.

  740. When we're

  741. faithful to do

  742. what we know

  743. God wants us

  744. to be, and it

  745. may be something

  746. small, maybe

  747. about your

  748. attitude, your

  749. relationships,

  750. some of the

  751. people you live

  752. with, the way

  753. you go about

  754. your job,

  755. whatever it

  756. is, when

  757. we're faithful

  758. to God to

  759. do whatever it

  760. is he's calling

  761. us to do, he's

  762. going to be

  763. pleased, he's

  764. going to be

  765. glorified in it.

  766. The people that

  767. we're involved

  768. with, they'll be

  769. helped.

  770. And we

  771. ourselves, we

  772. ourselves in the

  773. long run, we

  774. will be blessed

  775. by doing God's

  776. will and pleasing

  777. him.

  778. Let's look at

  779. one more thing.

  780. God sometimes

  781. uses us in

  782. spite of our

  783. rebellion to

  784. bless other

  785. people.

  786. Chapter one

  787. begins with

  788. Jonah refusing

  789. to preach to

  790. the pagan people

  791. of Nineveh.

  792. He hated

  793. them.

  794. They were the

  795. enemies of his

  796. country, they

  797. were the enemies

  798. of Israel.

  799. They were ruthless,

  800. savage, brutal

  801. people.

  802. He didn't

  803. want to go for

  804. a lot of

  805. reasons, but

  806. one of the

  807. reasons was he

  808. wanted them to

  809. die and go to

  810. hell.

  811. He didn't want

  812. these people to

  813. be saved.

  814. He didn't want

  815. to go and

  816. preach and

  817. them turn.

  818. And we'll see

  819. some of the

  820. things about how

  821. he didn't like it

  822. when they did

  823. later on.

  824. This chapter

  825. begins with

  826. Jonah refusing

  827. to go and

  828. preach to the

  829. pagan people of

  830. Nineveh, but

  831. it closes with

  832. Jonah unwillingly,

  833. preaching to the

  834. pagan sailors on

  835. the ship.

  836. God worked

  837. through Jonah in

  838. spite of his

  839. rebellion to

  840. save these men.

  841. That's what verse

  842. 16 indicates.

  843. Look at it.

  844. Then the men

  845. feared the Lord

  846. exceedingly, and

  847. they offered a

  848. sacrifice to the

  849. Lord and made

  850. vows.

  851. Again, they call

  852. on God's covenant

  853. name, the Lord,

  854. Yahweh.

  855. Here's what I

  856. want you to

  857. know.

  858. They did this

  859. after the storm

  860. stopped.

  861. Think about it.

  862. If they had done

  863. this before the

  864. storm stopped, we

  865. might think they

  866. were just doing

  867. whatever it took to

  868. try to save

  869. themselves.

  870. Jailhouse religion,

  871. foxhole religion,

  872. whatever you want to

  873. call it.

  874. A lot of times,

  875. people, maybe some

  876. of us in here,

  877. will bargain with

  878. God, will tell God

  879. what we'll do, and

  880. maybe even go through

  881. the motions of doing

  882. certain things until we

  883. get out of a jam.

  884. Then we forget about

  885. it.

  886. Well, these people,

  887. they feared the

  888. Lord, offered

  889. sacrifices, made

  890. vows after the

  891. danger had

  892. passed.

  893. It appears that

  894. these men had

  895. truly been

  896. converted.

  897. It seems that

  898. what we read there

  899. in verse 16 are

  900. expressions of

  901. faith, real faith

  902. in God, gratitude

  903. to Him.

  904. They are

  905. thankful.

  906. They love this

  907. God, this one

  908. true God, Yahweh,

  909. who has rescued

  910. them.

  911. God graciously

  912. used rebellious

  913. Jonah to

  914. accomplish His

  915. purpose in these

  916. men's lives, to

  917. call them to be

  918. His children.

  919. Now, I want you

  920. to think, if God

  921. could do that with

  922. uncooperating

  923. Jonah, think about

  924. how God could use

  925. us when we

  926. willingly cooperate

  927. with Him and are

  928. willing to do

  929. whatever it is He

  930. tells us to do.

  931. You know, we've

  932. looked at chapter

  933. one now for five

  934. weeks.

  935. There's a lot of

  936. great lessons here

  937. about God's

  938. grace, about how

  939. God graciously

  940. works out His

  941. purpose in our

  942. lives and in this

  943. world.

  944. God's grace.

  945. Therefore, we

  946. must not be

  947. intimidated by

  948. anyone's unbelief.

  949. You shouldn't

  950. write off anyone

  951. as beyond God's

  952. ability to save.

  953. If God could save

  954. these pagan

  955. sailors who

  956. worshipped false

  957. gods with this

  958. unfaithful prophet

  959. of His, He can

  960. save anyone.

  961. one.

  962. Here's the point I

  963. want to make here.

  964. Most of us in this

  965. room, we have

  966. family members or

  967. close friends who

  968. are not Christians.

  969. And some of them, we

  970. may think, they're

  971. beyond hope.

  972. Some of them may

  973. claim to be atheists.

  974. Some of them may just

  975. be hard-hearted, mean

  976. individuals.

  977. You may have tried to

  978. share the gospel with

  979. them before and they

  980. just brushed you off,

  981. cussed you out even.

  982. There may be people in

  983. our lives that we've

  984. just sort of given up

  985. on, but what I want us

  986. to see to happen with

  987. Jonah and these sailors

  988. is no one is beyond

  989. hope.

  990. So don't quit praying

  991. for that person.

  992. Don't quit trying to

  993. live out your faith in

  994. front of them and be a

  995. real friend to them.

  996. And don't not share

  997. the gospel with them

  998. because you're afraid,

  999. because they've not

  1000. responded well in the

  1001. past.

  1002. Prayerfully, carefully,

  1003. lovingly, ask God to

1004. use you as you willingly

  1005. try to influence them.

1006. Ask God to use you the

  1007. way he used unwilling

  1008. Jonah.

1009. Ask God to let you see a

  1010. miracle happen before

1011. your eyes and see that

  1012. hardened family member or

  1013. friend.

  1014. See that hardened person,

1015. that person with a hard

  1016. heart's heart melt and

  1017. embrace Jesus as their

  1018. Lord and Savior.

1019. A second lesson we find in

1020. chapter one is we as

  1021. individuals, we must stay

  1022. on guard against becoming

  1023. hard-hearted toward God

  1024. ourselves.

  1025. throughout this ordeal, Jonah

1026. is running from God, unwilling

1027. to change, unwilling to stop.

1028. It comes to the point where

  1029. Jonah realizes these sailors,

1030. they now know that the only way

1031. for this storm to stop and save

1032. their own lives is throw me

  1033. overboard.

1034. And he's willing to be thrown

1035. overboard before he will confess

1036. his sin to God and repent.

1037. There is every reason to believe

1038. that if Jonah at any point on this

1039. ship, if he had just said, God, I'm

1040. tired of running, you win.

1041. If Jonah just confessed his sin, his

  1042. disobedience, repented, changed his

1043. mind and said, Lord, I will go now and

1044. preach to the people of Nineveh.

1045. There's no reason to think that God

1046. wouldn't have stopped the storm

  1047. then.

1048. That was the whole point, getting

  1049. Jonah to go.

1050. But his heart was so hard, he was

1051. so stubborn, he was willing to die,

1052. be thrown overboard, rather than to

1053. go to these people and preach.

1054. You and I, we could become so

1055. hardened by our sin and disobedience

1056. that we destroy our own lives.

1057. You know, the writer to the Hebrews

1058. issued a warning about this.

  1059. Look at it.

1060. He says, but encourage one another

1061. daily as long as it is called today,

1062. so that none of you, writing to

1063. Christians, may be hardened by sin's

  1064. deceitfulness.

1065. In a room this size, there's most

  1066. likely people, professing Christians,

1067. and if you're honest, your heart is a

1068. whole lot harder right now than it was

  1069. this time last year.

1070. You think, are you less sensitive to

1071. the Spirit of God right now?

1072. Are you less merciful and compassionate

  1073. and loving?

1074. Have you developed some calluses in

  1075. your heart?

1076. Not just toward God, but even toward

  1077. people.

1078. This is a warning to us.

  1079. Don't be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.

1080. I want you to understand, it can ruin

  1081. your life.

1082. It can cost you some relationships.

1083. It can cost you more than you want to

  1084. pay.

  1085. Let's learn from Jonah.

  1086. Don't become so hardened that you're

1087. willing to die before you'll do God's

  1088. will.

1089. He may, he could let you do that.

1090. The final lesson I want us to look at

1091. this morning is, it's always to our

1092. advantage that we maintain an open heart

1093. and mind to God's call and a willingness

  1094. to do His will.

1095. Just think, if Jonah had obeyed God the

1096. first time, he would have avoided all the

1097. pain and misery that he went through and

1098. that he caused these sailors and everybody

1099. else in the ship to go through.

1100. God's will is always the best for us and

  1101. the people around us.

1102. Don't make God teach you every lesson the

  1103. hard way.

1104. All of us in this room, we've learned a lot

1105. of lessons the hard way.

1106. It's no fun, is it?

1107. We don't need to learn God's lessons the

1108. hard way and we don't have to.

  1109. Let's learn from Jonah's mistakes.

1110. Let's learn to trust God.

1111. To obey Him willingly the first time,

  1112. every time.

1113. And if we love Him, why don't we do it?

1114. If we're confident that He loves us, we

1115. have to be confident that His plan, His

1116. will will lead to the best life possible

  1117. for us.

1118. So let's learn to trust God and be

1119. faithful to obey Him every time.

  1120. Let's pray together.

1121. Father, show us now how we should

  1122. respond.

1123. Make it clear if our heart is hard.

1124. Maybe we don't even see it.

1125. We don't know it because it's so hard.

1126. Lord, intervene in whoever's life needs

1127. your intervention to make this known.

1128. If there are people here who are not

1129. Christians, make it clear to your God that

1130. their real problem is that they don't

  1131. know you.

  1132. They're far from you.

1133. And I pray that you'll help that person to

1134. be honest and admit it, turn from their

1135. sin and trust Jesus as their Savior and

  1136. Lord right now.

1137. If there's Christians in this room, Father,

1138. who are running from you, running from

1139. doing something specific that they know

1140. you want them to do, help them to

1141. understand they can run all they want to,

1142. but they can't get away.

1143. And Father, help us all to understand that

1144. if there's something that you have

1145. determined that we will do, we will do it.

1146. But Lord, help us to avoid the pain,

  1147. the discipline

1148. of getting us in a position where

  1149. we do want it.

1150. Let's just all be still and quiet before the Lord

1151. and respond to Him as He speaks to us.

1152. And I would be happy to pray with you during this time.

1153. If you want to come down to the front as musicians play.

  1154. Thank you.

  1155. Thank you.

  1156. Thank you.
