  1. I want you to look on the screen with me at three events that the Bible records and think

  2. about what they have in common.

  3. God parted the waters of the Red Sea so the children of Israel, His people, could walk

  4. through on dry land.

  5. After they were across, He closed the waters on the pursuing Egyptians and they drowned.

  6. Daniel was unjustly sentenced to death by being thrown into a den of lions.

  7. But God sent an angel to close the mouths of the lions and they didn't touch Daniel.

  8. They didn't harm him at all.

  9. Jesus fed over 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish.

  10. They all ate until they were full.

  11. And there were 12 basketfuls of pieces left over.

  12. All four Gospels record that.

  13. I'm sure everyone has figured out that all of those incidents are miracles that are described

  14. as miracles in the Bible.

  15. The Bible records hundreds of miracles.

  16. The most important event in the Bible is the resurrection of Jesus and it is a miracle.

  17. The person who refuses to believe that God can intervene in this world that He created, suspend the laws of nature that He put into place,

  18. and do supernatural things that we call miracles, that person cannot have a relationship with God.

  19. The fact is that anyone who denies the reality of miracles must also deny the reality of the God who has revealed Himself in Scripture and in the person of Jesus Christ.

  20. Now I am stressing the importance, the necessity of believing in miracles to prepare us for what we're going to look at this morning in the book of Jonah.

  21. Turn with me if you would to Jonah chapter 1 verse 17 and we're going to read through the end of chapter 2.

    Jonah 1:17

  22. In the Hebrew Bible chapter 2 begins with the English Bibles verse 17 of chapter 1.

  23. It's all one story.

  24. The story of the great fish swallowing Jonah and Jonah living to tell about it is one of the most well-known stories in the Bible.

  25. However, it is also one of the most unbelievable things you'll ever read and it is unbelieved by many people.

  26. I'm going to guess that 98% of people in this room are familiar with the story.

  27. But there's some you've never read it.

  28. Some you haven't read it in a long time.

  29. So before we go any further, let's read the story.

  30. A lot of times we refer to it as a children's Bible story of Jonah and the big fish.

  31. Or as some people call it, Jonah and the big whale.

  32. 1.17

  33. And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah.

  34. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

  35. Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish saying,

  36. I called out to the Lord out of my distress and he answered me.

  37. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried and you heard my voice.

  38. For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas and the flood surrounded me.

  39. All your waves and your billows passed over me.

  40. Then I said, I am driven away from your sight.

  41. Yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.

  42. The waters closed in over me to take my life.

  43. The deep surrounded me.

  44. Weeds were trapped or were wrapped around my head at the roots of the mountains.

  45. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever.

  46. Yet you brought up my life from the pit.

  47. Oh Lord, my God.

  48. When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord.

  49. My prayer came to you and to your holy temple.

  50. Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.

  51. But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you what I have vowed I will pay.

  52. Salvation belongs to the Lord.

  53. And the Lord spoke to the fish and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.

  54. Now, did you notice that this story is not really a story about a great fish?

  55. The fish is an important part of the story because God used it to rescue Jonah.

  56. God used the fish as an instrument of His grace to save Jonah.

  57. But the fish is really a minor character in this chapter and in this book.

  58. Now, there are some commentators, if you do a study of this,

  59. there are some commentators who will go to the trouble of describing

  60. why we should take this as a factual story.

  61. For example, they describe the kind of fish or the kind of a whale

  62. that is big enough to have swallowed Jonah

  63. and would have had enough air inside to sustain his life.

  64. You can read about that.

  65. There are some who will write about a few recorded stories

  66. of someone surviving inside a large fish for several days.

  67. And when the fish was caught and cut open, they were alive.

  68. But I agree with what most commentators say about this.

  69. We don't need to prove this story really happened.

  70. It is presented in the Word of God as a miraculous work of God

  71. that happened at some point in time in the life of this man named Jonah.

  72. That's how it reads.

  73. Look again, verse 117.

  74. The Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah.

    Jonah 2:10

  75. Chapter 2, verse 10.

  76. The Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.

  77. Our God is a miracle-working God.

  78. And because He is God, He doesn't explain how His miracles could have really happened.

  79. He is not concerned to try to make us skeptics in the 21st century

  80. believe that He did what He did, that He still does what He does.

  81. This passage, this story of Jonah and the big fish,

  82. it is presented in the Bible as something that God did.

  83. It happened.

  84. And if we understand the Bible to be God's Word,

  85. we need to understand whether we can explain it or not

  86. and accept this is a miracle of God.

  87. But there's an even better reason, more powerful reason

  88. for us to believe what happened to Jonah really happened.

  89. Jesus believed it.

  90. And Jesus even used this story to teach about His own death and resurrection.

  91. It's recorded in Matthew 12 and other Gospels.

  92. But look at this one.

  93. Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him saying,

  94. Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.

  95. But He answered them,

  96. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign.

  97. But no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

  98. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish,

  99. so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

  100. You see, Jesus understood this to be a real story.

  101. And He used it to teach the reality that He was going to die, be buried,

  102. be buried, and then rise again three days later.

  103. The focal point of chapter 2 of Jonah is not a great fish who swallowed Jonah,

  104. but the gracious God who rescued Jonah.

  105. And He just chose to use a fish to do it.

  106. There's something else about chapter 2 that we need to observe, take note of.

  107. And I hope if you're a regular reader of the Bible, you've already figured it out.

  108. Beginning in verse 2, chapter 2, verse 2 through verse 9,

  109. this reads like a psalm.

  110. If you're familiar with the psalms and you read this,

  111. in fact, if you just took out verse 2 through 9 of this chapter

  112. and just gave it to the average Bible reader,

  113. they'd think, well, this is one of the psalms.

  114. Well, it is a psalm.

  115. It's a psalm of Jonah.

  116. Now, I want you to look at the big picture of this passage.

  117. It is a prayer.

  118. The prayer of Jonah written in the form of a psalm.

  119. Jonah is actually, or it appears he's quoting from the psalms

  120. seven or eight times.

  121. If you've got a Bible that has cross-references,

  122. you will see that in the text, verses 2 through 9.

  123. Jonah wrote this sometime after it happened,

  124. and he's looking back describing his experience in the ocean

  125. when he thought he was going to drown

  126. and inside this fish when he prayed to God.

  127. This is a long introduction, I know.

  128. And so what we're going to look at next

  129. is just the first point of chapter 2's study,

  130. and we'll come back next week and finish it up.

  131. Let's look now at what we can learn

  132. from Jonah's experience of running to God in prayer.

  133. Point number one, God can put us in a position

  134. where all we can do is pray.

  135. We need to understand this.

  136. God can, and sometimes does,

  137. put us, his people we're talking about,

  138. in a position where all we can do is pray.

  139. From the beginning of chapter 1,

  140. Jonah has been running from God.

  141. That's what the whole story has been up to this point.

  142. He is a prophet of God.

  143. He's a believer.

  144. He is one who knows God,

  145. has a relationship with God,

  146. but he's rebelling at this point in time,

  147. chapter 1.

  148. He's rebelling and running from

  149. what he knows God wants him to do.

  150. He does his best to ignore God

  151. while he's on board this ship,

  152. even during a life-threatening storm.

  153. No one else on this ship

  154. believed in the one true God.

  155. Everyone else on that ship,

  156. they were pagans

  157. who worshipped all kinds of false gods.

  158. But here's what we read in chapter 1.

  159. Everyone prayed except Jonah.

  160. It appears that Jonah was so determined

  161. to not do God's will

  162. that he was willing to die

  163. rather than repent and do it.

  164. That's the impression that he gives

  165. when he tells those sailors,

  166. if you want this storm to stop,

  167. throw me overboard.

  168. Knowing full well,

  169. you get thrown overboard

  170. in the Mediterranean Sea

  171. in the midst of the storm,

  172. you're going to die.

  173. You're going to drown.

  174. But God was determined

  175. to change Jonah's mind

  176. by putting him in a position

  177. where he would stop running from God

  178. and start running to God

  179. in prayer.

  180. God did two things

  181. to bring this about.

  182. God used the sailors

  183. to throw Jonah overboard,

  184. sink to the bottom

  185. of the Mediterranean Sea,

  186. and come close to drowning.

  187. But Jonah, I want you to look,

  188. he described all this

  189. as God's work.

  190. Verse 3,

  191. For you cast me into the deep.

  192. God just used the sailors.

  193. But Jonah understood.

  194. He had been running from God

  195. and God was tired of it.

  196. And God stopped his running

  197. by throwing him into the sea

  198. using the hands of those sailors.

  199. God sent a great fish

  200. to rescue Jonah,

  201. save his life,

  202. by swallowing him

  203. and keeping him alive,

  204. trapped inside its body

  205. for three days and nights.

  206. Jonah didn't say

  207. this just happened.

  208. He attributed it

  209. to the work of God.

  210. Look again at verse 17.

  211. And the Lord

  212. appointed a great fish

  213. to swallow Jonah.

  214. And Jonah was in the belly

  215. of the fish

  216. three days and three nights.

  217. I want you to imagine

  218. what it would have been like

  219. for Jonah

  220. to go through all this.

  221. Anytime we read the Bible,

  222. we need to understand

  223. this is describing

  224. real events

  225. that happened

  226. in history,

  227. in time

  228. to people just like us.

  229. Whenever you read

  230. something in the Bible,

  231. think,

  232. this really happened.

  233. If I had been there,

  234. I could have seen it.

  235. Think about those people.

  236. They're just human beings

  237. like us.

  238. And so we can get more

  239. out of some studies

  240. by just putting ourselves

  241. in situations

  242. and thinking about

  243. what it would have been like.

  244. Jonah was probably

  245. wedged inside the fish

  246. and unable to move

  247. during this time.

  248. You've probably seen cartoons

  249. where Jonah is swallowed

  250. by a whale

  251. and he wakes up

  252. in the belly of the whale

  253. and it's just a large area

  254. like this

  255. or a cave

  256. or something.

  257. And he just sits around,

  258. you know,

  259. taking it easy,

  260. talking to God,

  261. whatever.

  262. Jonah was swallowed

  263. by a fish

  264. and most likely

  265. whatever position

  266. he was in,

  267. when he got in there,

  268. that's how he...

  269. He was stuck.

  270. He was wedged.

  271. At best,

  272. he would have had

  273. just a little room

  274. to wiggle around.

  275. Inside that fish,

  276. he was in total darkness.

  277. The air was thin.

  278. There was a constant,

  279. sickening stink

  280. and almost unbearable heat

  281. inside this big fish.

  282. Now think about it.

  283. He would be in shock

  284. at first.

  285. Then he would have had

  286. a full-blown

  287. panic attack.

  288. He'd have taken

  289. a whole bottle

  290. of lorazepam

  291. if he'd have had it

  292. or something like that.

  293. He would have drifted

  294. in and out

  295. of consciousness.

  296. But at some point,

  297. over the course

  298. of those three days,

  299. he came to himself.

  300. He realized

  301. where he was

  302. and what his condition was.

  303. He didn't know

  304. if he'd live and die

  305. to start with,

  306. live or die

  307. to start with.

  308. At some point,

  309. he spiritually

  310. and emotionally

  311. ran to God

  312. in prayer.

  313. and looking back,

  314. he describes it

  315. in the form of a psalm.

  316. R.T. Kendall

  317. describes Jonah's

  318. situation like this.

  319. The belly of the fish

  320. is not a happy place

  321. to live,

  322. but it is a good place

  323. to learn

  324. and Jonah

  325. had a lot to learn.

  326. Now I want you

  327. to understand.

  328. I am not implying

  329. in this message

  330. that God's going

  331. to do something

  332. like this to you.

  333. God rarely

  334. ever

  335. goes to such

  336. extreme measures

  337. to turn around

  338. his wayward people.

  339. But God has

  340. many ways

  341. of putting us

  342. in positions

  343. where we are

  344. willing to stop

  345. running

  346. and start running

  347. to him

  348. in prayer.

  349. If we could just

  350. go around this room

  351. this morning

  352. and everybody

  353. explain a time

  354. when God

  355. got your

  356. attention,

  357. we would find

  358. a lot of

  359. common ways

  360. that God works

  361. in our life

  362. to get our

  363. attention.

  364. Some of us

  365. in here,

  366. we've been

  367. maybe spiritually

  368. asleep

  369. or indifferent

  370. or even rebellious,

  371. but a family

  372. crisis

  373. got our

  374. attention,

  375. woke us up,

  376. caused us

  377. to turn to God

  378. in prayer.

  379. Some people,

  380. a health

  381. scare

  382. is what it

  383. took to

  384. bring you

  385. back to where

  386. you would

  387. talk to God.

  388. Some people,

  389. it's a financial

  390. problem.

  391. You're going to

  392. lose something.

  393. Some people,

  394. it's something

  395. that goes on

  396. with your job,

  397. your school.

  398. For some people,

  399. it's relational

  400. outside of family.

  401. God just has

  402. his ways.

  403. knowing us,

  404. knowing what

  405. will get our

  406. attention

  407. in the situations

  408. of life

  409. that we have,

  410. God has ways

  411. when he's ready

  412. to cause us

  413. to pay attention

  414. to him,

  415. listen to him,

  416. talk to him

  417. in prayer.

  418. I think Abraham

  419. Lincoln describes

  420. the way all of us

  421. have felt at times.

  422. He said,

  423. I have been

  424. driven many

  425. times to my

  426. knees by the

  427. overwhelming

  428. conviction that

  429. I have nowhere

  430. else to turn.

  431. If you're in a

  432. situation like

  433. that now,

  434. or you know

  435. someone close

  436. to you who

  437. is,

  438. I want you to

  439. understand that

  440. God takes no

  441. pleasure in

  442. putting such

  443. pressure on

  444. his children.

  445. You may need

  446. to assure

  447. somebody of

  448. that.

  449. But at the

  450. same time,

  451. God loves us

  452. enough to

  453. discipline us

  454. severely if

  455. necessary to

  456. put us in a

  457. position where

  458. we can and

  459. want to come

  460. back to him in

  461. confession, in

  462. repentance, and

  463. renewed

  464. commitment.

  465. He is a

  466. great father.

  467. father.

  468. As we

  469. studied a few

  470. weeks ago,

  471. great parents

  472. discipline their

  473. children.

  474. You don't just

  475. let anything go.

  476. And a loving,

  477. gracious parent

  478. will sometimes

  479. go to

  480. tremendous lengths

  481. to inflict

  482. pain for the

  483. ultimate outcome

  484. of turning a

  485. child's life

  486. around if

  487. possible.

  488. Well, God

  489. can and does

  490. that when

  491. necessary.

  492. But we learn

  493. from Jonah that

  494. we can never run

  495. too far for God

  496. to hear our

  497. prayer of

  498. desperation.

  499. Look at verse

  500. two.

  501. I called out

  502. to the Lord

  503. out of my

  504. distress.

  505. He answered

  506. me.

  507. Out of the

  508. belly of Sheol

  509. I cried,

  510. and you heard

  511. my voice.

  512. God, or

  513. Jonah called

  514. out to God

  515. from what he

  516. considered to be

  517. the place of

  518. death, Sheol.

  519. You see it

  520. several times in

  521. the book of

  522. Psalms.

  523. The place of

  524. death.

  525. A place of

  526. no return.

  527. That's what

  528. Jonah felt

  529. like at first

  530. when he cried

  531. out to God.

  532. But God

  533. heard his

  534. prayer.

  535. And God

  536. graciously

  537. answered it.

  538. If you are

  539. away from God

  540. right now,

  541. I want to

  542. encourage you

  543. as strongly

  544. as I can.

  545. Call out

  546. to God

  547. right now

  548. where you

  549. are just

  550. as you

  551. are.

  552. God

  553. you may

  554. have drifted

  555. from God

  556. years ago.

  557. You may

  558. think to

  559. yourself, if

  560. you'll stop

  561. and think,

  562. I've been

  563. sort of

  564. spiritually

  565. indifferent

  566. for quite some

  567. time.

  568. You may be

  569. here right now

  570. in body,

  571. but this

  572. entire service,

  573. your mind and

  574. your heart,

  575. it's not been

  576. here.

  577. If that's

  578. true, you

  579. know it.

  580. Because you

  581. haven't

  582. worshipped God

  583. and hadn't

  584. really wanted

  585. to.

  586. You haven't

  587. been listening

  588. to Him.

  589. Because truth

  590. be known,

  591. you're not

  592. interested in

  593. Him.

  594. You come to

  595. church for

  596. various reasons,

  597. out of habit,

  598. out of to

  599. please someone,

  600. or maybe

  601. with a

  602. thought,

  603. God will

  604. love me

  605. more,

  606. He won't

  607. do something

  608. to me if

  609. I put in

  610. the time

  611. on Sundays.

  612. Crazy thought,

  613. heretical

  614. thought,

  615. but a lot of

  616. people have

  617. those kinds

  618. of thoughts.

  619. It could be

  620. that you've

  621. rebelled against

  622. God,

  623. and you're

  624. living in

  625. willful sin

  626. right now.

  627. You've

  628. turned away

  629. from Him,

  630. but you've

  631. not been able

  632. to escape

  633. Him,

  634. His conviction,

  635. or the guilt

  636. that goes along

  637. with your sin,

  638. because as a

  639. child of God,

  640. you just know

  641. it's wrong,

  642. and you can't

  643. get that out

  644. of your mind.

  645. It may be

  646. that what's

  647. going on in

  648. your life right

  649. now,

  650. somebody sitting

  651. next to you

  652. could elbow

  653. you because

  654. they know it.

  655. They know

  656. that you're

  657. living in

  658. rebellion right

  659. now.

  660. But it could

  661. be the people

  662. you're sitting

  663. with,

  664. that you live

  665. with,

  666. it could be

  667. they don't

  668. know,

  669. because what's

  670. going on in

  671. your life is

  672. mainly in your

  673. mind,

  674. in your heart,

  675. it's in your

  676. thoughts,

  677. it's in your

  678. desires,

  679. it's things

  680. you do in

  681. secret.

  682. But nonetheless,

  683. you know it,

  684. and God knows

  685. it.

  686. And so the

  687. conviction is

  688. there,

  689. the guilt is

  690. there,

  691. but no one

  692. else in the

  693. world may know

  694. what you're

  695. going through.

  696. If you're

  697. away from

  698. God for

  699. any reason,

  700. learn from

  701. Jonah's

  702. painful

  703. experience.

  704. Don't put

  705. God in

  706. position to

  707. so work in

  708. your life

  709. that he has

  710. to get you

  711. like Jonah

  712. where all

  713. you can do

  714. is pray.

  715. God's

  716. God's

  717. God.

  718. This is the

  719. whole point of

  720. today's message

  721. because we as

  722. Christians,

  723. we disappoint

  724. God.

  725. We ignore

  726. God.

  727. We run

  728. from God.

  729. We rebel

  730. against God.

  731. We do.

  732. If you think

  733. and say,

  734. if I don't,

  735. you've got some

  736. deep problems.

  737. You don't

  738. understand yourself

  739. or you don't

  740. understand sin

  741. or you don't

  742. understand God.

  743. if you don't

  744. think of

  745. yourself as

  746. having a sin

  747. problem,

  748. an obedience

  749. problem,

  750. a holiness

  751. problem,

  752. a love

  753. problem,

  754. talk to

  755. your spouse.

  756. They can

  757. help you.

  758. Talk to

  759. your children.

  760. Talk to

  761. your parents.

  762. Talk to

  763. anyone who

  764. knows you

  765. well and

  766. will tell

  767. you the

  768. truth.

  769. truth.

  770. We,

  771. you and

  772. me,

  773. we can be

  774. just like

  775. Jonah or

  776. worse as

  777. God's

  778. children at

  779. times.

  780. Here's how I

  781. want us to

  782. end this with

  783. a thought today.

  784. Are you

  785. closer to God

  786. right now than

  787. you have ever

  788. been in your

  789. life?

  790. If you are,

  791. that's

  792. something to

  793. just be

  794. thankful for,

  795. to praise

  796. God for,

  797. that's a

  798. sign that

  799. God's working

  800. in your

  801. life and

  802. you need

  803. to just

  804. be thankful

  805. and ask

  806. God to

  807. help you

  808. just to

  809. stay close

  810. to Him.

  811. If you

  812. are not

  813. close to

  814. God right

  815. now,

  816. closer than

  817. you've ever

  818. been,

  819. why is

  820. that?

  821. I want

  822. you to

  823. try to

  824. identify

  825. why.

  826. We as

  827. God's

  828. children

  829. shouldn't

  830. be content

  831. to not

  832. be as

  833. close as

  834. possible to

  835. Him.

  836. Is there

  837. something you

  838. have done

  839. or refused

  840. to do

  841. that is

  842. the source

  843. of your

  844. separation?

  845. Is there

  846. something that

  847. the Bible

  848. clearly teaches

  849. but you're

  850. just not

  851. willing to

  852. obey it?

  853. and it

  854. may be

  855. something

  856. related to

  857. who you

  858. are as

  859. a member

  860. of a

  861. family.

  862. It may

  863. be about

  864. attitudes.

  865. It may

  866. be the way

  867. you treat

  868. certain people

  869. or certain

  870. kinds of

  871. people.

  872. It may be

  873. your mouth,

  874. your tongue.

  875. There's

  876. something about

  877. something that the

  878. Bible clearly

  879. teaches but you

  880. just won't

  881. obey it.

  882. Or is

  883. there an

  884. internal voice

  885. of the

  886. Holy Spirit

  887. that is

  888. leading you

  889. to do

  890. something but

  891. you're trying

  892. to ignore

  893. that?

  894. You're not

  895. obeying

  896. that.

  897. It could be

  898. something along

  899. the line of

  900. the Lord's

  901. prompting you

  902. to serve

  903. Him a

  904. certain way

  905. or He's

  906. prompting you

  907. to get

  908. involved in

  909. a certain

  910. person's life

  911. as a

  912. Christian witness

  913. or influence

  914. to meet

  915. a need.

  916. Either way,

  917. if we're not

  918. being faithful

  919. to what we

  920. know the

  921. Bible says

  922. about something

  923. or we're

  924. not acting

  925. on what the

  926. Lord is

  927. leading us

  928. to do from

  929. His Spirit

  930. within us,

  931. our refusal

  932. is sinful

  933. disobedience.

  934. And if that

  935. describes why

  936. you are

  937. separated from

  938. God right now,

  939. there's only

  940. one solution,

  941. that is you've

  942. got to confess

  943. it to Him

  944. and turn from

  945. it.

  946. Here's what I

  947. want you to

  948. understand.

  949. It may be

  950. something that's

  951. going on for

  952. a long time,

  953. but God is

  954. never so far

  955. away that He

  956. can't hear our

  957. prayer of sincere

  958. confession and

  959. repentance.

  960. There are no

  961. exceptions to

  962. God's promise in

  963. 1 John 1, 9.

  964. If we confess

  965. our sins, He is

  966. faithful and just

  967. to forgive us

  968. our sins and to

  969. cleanse us from

  970. all unrighteousness.

  971. Here's what I

  972. want you to hear.

  973. God will forgive

  974. you and restore

  975. you to fellowship

  976. with Him no

  977. matter what

  978. you've done,

  979. no matter how

  980. many times you've

  981. done it,

  982. no matter how

  983. long ago,

  984. if you will come

  985. to Him,

  986. the way the

  987. Scripture says.

  988. But it could be

  989. this morning that

  990. you would say,

  991. I'm not as close

  992. to God as I once

  993. was,

  994. and I don't know

  995. why.

  996. You're just sort

  997. depressed,

  998. discouraged.

  999. It's just sort

  1000. of maybe empty.

  1001. You're not

  1002. conscious of any

  1003. real willful

  1004. sin.

  1005. It's not that

  1006. you're not willing

  1007. to confess

  1008. something.

  1009. It's not that you

  1010. hate God or even

  1011. are indifferent to

  1012. Him.

  1013. You just,

  1014. there's just

  1015. something wrong.

  1016. Could it be

  1017. that you're not

  1018. spending any

  1019. meaningful time

  1020. with Him

  1021. in His Word,

  1022. in prayer?

  1023. I'm talking about

  1024. just being still

  1025. and quiet before

  1026. the Lord,

  1027. spending time with

  1028. Him on a regular

  1029. basis,

  1030. talking to Him

  1031. about what's

  1032. going on in your

  1033. life,

  1034. listening to Him

  1035. as He speaks

  1036. from His Word,

  1037. helping you to

  1038. understand Him

  1039. better,

  1040. how to relate to

  1041. Him better,

  1042. helping you understand

  1043. yourself better,

  1044. you know,

  1045. prayer and Bible

  1046. reading or Bible

  1047. study are the

  1048. two most important

  1049. means of grace

  1050. that God has

  1051. given us to

  1052. cultivate a

  1053. relationship with

  1054. Him.

  1055. We cannot,

  1056. you can't,

  1057. I can't,

  1058. no one can

  1059. spend,

  1060. no one can

  1061. develop a

  1062. relationship with

  1063. Jesus,

  1064. with the Lord,

  1065. apart from

  1066. spending time

  1067. with Him

  1068. in real,

  1069. honest prayer

  1070. and open,

  1071. receptive,

  1072. Bible reading.

  1073. Spending time

  1074. with the Lord

  1075. is the best

  1076. way to draw

  1077. close to Him

  1078. as James

  1079. encourages us

  1080. to do in his

  1081. letter.

  1082. Look at it.

  1083. He says,

  1084. draw near to

  1085. God and He

  1086. will draw near

  1087. to you.

  1088. Are you not

  1089. as close to

  1090. God as you

  1091. used to be,

  1092. as you want

  1093. to be?

  1094. You don't know

  1095. why?

  1096. Well, here's a

  1097. step.

  1098. Draw close to

  1099. God.

  1100. Even if you

  1101. don't feel like

  1102. it, talk to

  1103. Him.

  1104. Talk to Him

  1105. about why you

  1106. don't feel like

  1107. it.

  1108. Talk to Him

  1109. and say, I

  1110. don't know

  1111. what's wrong.

  1112. Help me to

  1113. see.

  1114. Help me to

  1115. understand.

  1116. Read His

  1117. Word.

  1118. Read the

  1119. Psalms.

  1120. The

  1121. Psalmist,

  1122. the Psalmist

  1123. has all kinds

  1124. of problems,

  1125. just like Jonah.

  1126. The Psalmist

  1127. has problems

  1128. with people

  1129. sometimes.

  1130. Sometimes he

  1131. just hates

  1132. people.

  1133. Sometimes he

  1134. feels like

  1135. God's far

  1136. away.

  1137. He's honest

  1138. about this.

  1139. God knows

  1140. if you hate

  1141. someone or

  1142. can't stand

  1143. someone.

  1144. God knows

  1145. if you feel

  1146. like you are

  1147. a million miles

  1148. from Him.

  1149. It's no

  1150. surprise.

  1151. So just talk

  1152. to Him about

  1153. it.

  1154. Be honest

  1155. with Him

  1156. about it.

  1157. Ask Him

  1158. to help

  1159. you.

  1160. Ask Him

  1161. to help

  1162. you to

  1163. change.

  1164. Ask Him

  1165. to help

  1166. you have a

  1167. better attitude.

  1168. Ask Him

  1169. to draw

  1170. close to

  1171. you as

  1172. you are

  1173. seeking to

  1174. draw close

  1175. to Him.

  1176. God

  1177. graciously

  1178. pursues His

  1179. rebellious,

  1180. disobedient

  1181. children.

  1182. As our

  1183. loving Heavenly

  1184. Father,

  1185. He wants

  1186. to forgive

  1187. us.

  1188. He wants

  1189. to restore

  1190. us to

  1191. fellowship

  1192. with Him

  1193. if we're

  1194. away.

  1195. And God

  1196. really wants

  1197. to do it

  1198. the easy

  1199. way.

  1200. Through our

  1201. willing,

  1202. sincere,

  1203. wholehearted

  1204. repentance

  1205. and commitment

  1206. to Him.

  1207. God doesn't

  1208. want to

  1209. wear us

  1210. out.

  1211. But He

  1212. will if He

  1213. has to.

  1214. God would

  1215. much rather

  1216. us come

  1217. to Him

  1218. the easy

  1219. way.

  1220. But like

  1221. we see in

  1222. Jonah,

  1223. God loves

  1224. us so much

  1225. He'll do

  1226. whatever it

  1227. takes,

  1228. no matter how

  1229. painful it

  1230. is to

  1231. cause us

  1232. to stop

  1233. running from

  1234. Him and

  1235. start running

  1236. to Him in

  1237. desperate

  1238. prayer.

  1239. Let's pray

  1240. together.

  1241. Dear God,

  1242. help us to

  1243. see ourselves

  1244. in this

  1245. story

  1246. where

  1247. applicable.

  1248. God

  1249. help us

  1250. all.

  1251. But Father,

  1252. help us

  1253. all,

  1254. whether it

  1255. be for

  1256. now or

  1257. for some

  1258. point in

  1259. the future,

  1260. help us

  1261. all to

  1262. see that

  1263. You are

  1264. able and

  1265. You are

  1266. willing to

  1267. so work in

  1268. our lives,

  1269. if we're

  1270. Your children,

  1271. to stop our

  1272. running and

  1273. disobedience

  1274. and put us

  1275. in a position

  1276. where all

  1277. we can do

  1278. and want to

  1279. do is seek

  1280. You in

  1281. prayer.

  1282. Lord,

  1283. show us how

  1284. we should

  1285. respond so

  1286. that we

  1287. might leave

  1288. here today

  1289. walking with

  1290. You in

  1291. real,

  1292. loving

  1293. fellowship

  1294. and

  1295. obedience.

  1296. And Father,

  1297. if there's

  1298. anyone in

  1299. this room

  1300. who is not

  1301. a Christian,

  1302. help them

  1303. to understand

  1304. that the only

  1305. way they can

  1306. begin a

  1307. relationship

  1308. with You

  1309. is to

  1310. confess their

  1311. sin,

  1312. truly turn

  1313. from it,

  1314. and trust

  1315. Jesus as

  1316. their personal

  1317. Savior and

  1318. Lord.

  1319. Help that

  1320. person to do

  1321. it now.

  1322. Let's just

  1323. all stay

  1324. in an

  1325. attitude of

  1326. prayer and

  1327. listen to the

  1328. Lord and

  1329. respond to

  1330. Him.
