  1. Last Wednesday night we did a study that helps us see why most people in this world are religious

  2. and have at least a basic understanding of right and wrong.

  3. We looked at God's common grace and His natural law.

  4. Well, tonight I want to sort of continue that line of thinking

  5. by looking at how God is at work in every aspect of this universe.

  6. He's always at work in everything.

  7. Theologians call this God's providence.

  8. I've given you on the outline a condensed version of last week's handout.

  9. Look briefly at the major points.

  10. If you are interested and you weren't here last week, you can read it when you get home.

  11. If you looked at God's common grace and natural law,

  12. common grace is the idea that God demonstrates His grace toward all people on a regular basis.

  13. Jesus talked about it, so did Paul.

  14. Timothy Keller has a good explanation about it.

  15. Natural law.

  16. God has revealed Himself and His law in a general way to all people.

  17. He's written it on our hearts.

  18. It's a part of being created in the image of God.

  19. And Paul writes about it there in Romans chapter 2.

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  20. He also talks about in Romans 1 how God has revealed Himself to everybody through nature,

  21. through what He's created.

  22. And God considers His revelation enough to make people aware enough about Him

  23. that when they reject what He has revealed about Himself,

  24. all people are guilty of sin.

  25. They're without excuse.

  26. Wayne Grudem explains this a good way there.

  27. But we looked at that in detail last week and that's not for tonight.

  28. Let's look at Roman numeral 2 now.

  29. God's continuing work in His creation, the doctrine of providence.

  30. I want to define it by looking at two things.

  31. Millard Erickson.

  32. Erickson is a Baptist theologian.

  33. He is probably the second most read,

  34. or his Christian theology is second most used in Southern Baptist seminaries.

  35. Wayne Grudem is number one.

  36. But Erickson is very respected.

  37. He writes,

  38. While creation is God's originating work with respect to the universe,

  39. providence is God's continuing relationship to His creation.

  40. By providence, we mean the continuing action of God by which He preserves in existence

  41. the creation He's brought into being,

  42. and He guides it to His intended purpose for it.

  43. The Bible teaches that God created everything.

  44. And the Bible teaches that God didn't just create this world.

  45. He didn't just create it and wind it up and let it go.

  46. God has continued since the day of creation

  47. to be involved in guiding everything now in this fallen sinful world

  48. according to His intended purpose.

  49. He is God.

  50. He's in control.

  51. The abstract of principles,

  52. that is still a governing document at Southern Seminary.

  53. Teaching on the faculty there.

  54. You've got to sign that along with Baptist faith and message.

  55. It is the earliest written statement of faith of Southern Baptists.

  56. Now Baptist 1689 wrote the second London Baptist.

  57. I remember that date.

  58. I don't remember when the first one was.

  59. Baptists have been writing statement of faith since Baptists have been in existence.

  60. But the first one,

  61. Southern Baptist Convention was started in 1845.

  62. The first statement of faith that was written by a Southern Baptist.

  63. It was the abstract of principles.

  64. And they have a section on God's providence.

  65. Look at it.

  66. God from eternity decrees or permits all things that come to pass

  67. and perpetually upholds, directs, and governs all creatures and all events,

  68. yet so as not in any wise to be the author or approver of sin,

  69. nor to destroy the free will and responsibility of intelligent creatures.

  70. God's in control.

  71. But when you and I do sinful things and stupid things,

  72. we can't blame God.

  73. But even in the midst of our sin and stupidity,

  74. He's still in control.

  75. And He can work in it, through it, around it

  76. to accomplish what He wants to accomplish in this world and in our lives.

  77. The idea of God's providence means that nothing happens by chance.

  78. There are no accidents.

  79. I saw one smart aleck one time make a statement like that,

  80. and then he stumbled and fell,

  81. got up and said, I'm glad that's over.

  82. The outcome of things like rolling dice, flipping coins,

  83. are ordered by God and stated there, you see, in His Word.

  84. The lot is cast into the lap,

  85. but it's every decision is from the Lord.

  86. And there's a lot of places in the Old Testament

  87. where God's people and pagans like in the book of Jonah,

  88. which is a lot of places where God's people,

  89. they so trusted that God was in charge.

  90. Another way to describe this,

  91. they so trusted in God's sovereignty,

  92. that He was in control,

  93. that they cast the lot, cast the die,

  94. with the trust that God would make it what He wanted it to be.

  95. It's just a matter of information.

  96. When is the last time

  97. believers cast lots in the Bible?

  98. Huh?

  99. That's right.

  100. In Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  101. they chose Judas' replacement

  102. by the casting of a lot.

  103. And that was it.

  104. Now,

  105. we can do a study on that sometime,

  106. but from that point on,

  107. after that,

  108. the Holy Spirit came

  109. to indwell all Christians.

  110. And from that point on,

  111. as you read through the New Testament,

  112. the apostles,

  113. they made decisions

  114. based on prayer,

  115. their knowledge of God's Word,

  116. and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

  117. They made decisions

  118. based on their God-given wisdom.

  119. And when you see churches making decisions,

  120. that's what they did.

  121. And then we're casting a lot.

  122. That's why we don't do that.

  123. Now,

  124. there's nothing wrong with,

  125. you know,

  126. if,

  127. you know,

  128. if I've got $5,

  129. and I think,

  130. I either ought to give it to Tommy or Millage,

  131. which one should I give it to?

  132. Flip a coin.

  133. I don't see anything wrong with that.

  134. Do you?

  135. We can do that.

  136. But the idea is,

  137. God is in control

  138. to the minutest detail,

  139. even in the flip of a coin.

  140. The lot is cast into the lap,

  141. but it's every decision is from the Lord.

  142. And Paul said

  143. that God works all things

  144. according to the counsel of His will.

  145. I mean,

  146. the Bible is just real clear

  147. God's in charge.

  148. God's providence is sometimes described

  149. in terms of God's sovereignty.

  150. It's really hard,

  151. or at least it is hard for me,

  152. to distinguish between

  153. a definition of God's providence

  154. and the definition of God's sovereignty.

  155. I don't know if I was trying to get everything on two pages.

  156. Wayne Grudem defines God's sovereignty

  157. as God's exercise of power over His creation.

  158. Very similar.

  159. Very similar.

  160. In fact,

  161. if you read,

  162. if you ever do a study of God's providence,

  163. whoever's writing,

  164. whoever's trying to explain it,

  165. whoever brings out Scripture,

  166. they're going to bring in that word sovereignty

  167. to explain it as well.

  168. And here's some good examples

  169. of how the Bible is filled

  170. with statements

  171. about God's power,

  172. God's authority,

  173. God's sovereignty.

  174. Job said to God,

  175. I know that you can do all things.

  176. No plan of yours can be thwarted.

  177. The Lord does whatever pleases Him

  178. in the heavens and on earth,

  179. in the seas,

  180. in all their depths.

  181. It's everywhere.

  182. And in Isaiah,

  183. I say,

  184. the Lord says,

  185. my purpose will stand

  186. and I will do all that I please.

  187. What I want us to see in this,

  188. this is helpful to us.

  189. If we are truly Christians

  190. and we believe

  191. that God is who He's revealed Himself to be

  192. in His Word,

  193. we really believe

  194. that the Bible is God's inerrant Word,

  195. this should be comforting to us.

  196. This should assure us

  197. that God is in control.

  198. Miller Derrickson says something along this line,

  199. providence is in certain ways

  200. central to the conduct

  201. of the Christian life,

  202. central to how we live our lives.

  203. It means that we are able

  204. to live in the assurance

  205. that God is present

  206. and active

  207. in our lives.

  208. We are in His care

  209. and He can,

  210. and can therefore face the future

  211. confidently

  212. knowing that things

  213. are not happening

  214. merely by chance.

  215. We can pray

  216. knowing that God hears

  217. and acts upon our prayers.

  218. We can face danger

  219. knowing that He is not

  220. unaware

  221. and uninvolved.

  222. But here's the rub here.

  223. God is sovereign.

  224. God's in control.

  225. But everything doesn't happen

  226. in our lives

  227. like we want it to.

  228. Everything that happens

  229. to us and around us

  230. is not just,

  231. is not right,

  232. is not good.

  233. There are Christians

  234. probably,

  235. I don't have any idea,

  236. but there's probably

  237. Christians

  238. who are grieving

  239. the death

  240. of their loved one

  241. in El Paso

  242. or Dayton, Ohio.

  243. God's sovereignty

  244. doesn't take away

  245. the pain.

  246. It does not

  247. in any way

  248. lessen

  249. the loss,

  250. the grief

  251. that your child,

  252. your spouse,

  253. your parent,

  254. your friend

  255. has died

  256. a senseless death.

  257. So here's where

  258. we've got to really trust it.

  259. God knows

  260. what He's doing.

  261. We wish

  262. that wasn't

  263. what He allowed.

  264. but He did.

  265. Romans 8, 28

  266. is one of the most,

  267. one of the best

  268. one verse statement

  269. of God's providence.

  270. And I think it helps

  271. just to know

  272. and we know

  273. that in all things

  274. God works for the good

  275. of those who love Him

  276. who have been called

  277. according to His purpose.

  278. not that everything

  279. is good

  280. but He is working

  281. for ultimate good.

  282. The story of Joseph

  283. is the best example

  284. of that.

  285. It's one of the best

  286. examples

  287. of God's providence

  288. or God's sovereign power

  289. that you have

  290. in all the Bible.

  291. I want us to look

  292. just,

  293. you know,

  294. sort of

  295. in a general way.

  296. I'm assuming

  297. that everybody here

  298. is familiar

  299. with the story

  300. of Joseph.

  301. Joseph.

  302. You should be.

  303. Genesis 37

  304. through 50

  305. tells it.

  306. Let's look

  307. at some highlights.

  308. Number one,

  309. God works

  310. through sin

  311. to accomplish

  312. His purpose.

  313. God is not

  314. the author

  315. of sin

  316. but He does

  317. work through it.

  318. God doesn't

  319. cause sin

  320. but He does

  321. work through it.

  322. God works

  323. through the sinful

  324. choices

  325. of people

  326. to do

  327. His will.

  328. As Job

  329. said,

  330. sin cannot

  331. or nothing

  332. can thwart

  333. the purposes

  334. of God.

  335. Sin cannot

  336. thwart

  337. the purposes

  338. of God.

  339. Think about

  340. the sinful

  341. choices

  342. of Joseph's

  343. brothers.

  344. They hated

  345. their brother.

  346. They were

  347. jealous

  348. of their brother

  349. and nobody

  350. made them

  351. be that way.

  352. They couldn't

  353. stand the fact

  354. that their

  355. father favored

  356. Joseph.

  357. I think

  358. that's a flaw

  359. in the parent

  360. and Joseph

  361. probably shouldn't

  362. have said all

  363. he said about

  364. his dreams.

  365. He might have

  366. fanned the flames

  367. a little bit

  368. himself

  369. but they chose

  370. to hate him,

  371. to be jealous

  372. of him.

  373. They wanted

  374. to kill him

  375. remember.

  376. But one

  377. of the

  378. brothers,

  379. one of the

  380. brothers

  381. intervened

  382. and led

  383. them to

  384. sell him

  385. into slavery.

  386. God allowed

  387. that to happen

  388. and we don't

  389. always see it

  390. but we see it,

  391. look at it

  392. on the scripture

  393. there.

  394. God used it

  395. for a great

  396. purpose.

  397. As for you,

  398. this is what

  399. Joseph said

  400. to his brothers,

  401. as for you,

  402. you meant

  403. evil against

  404. me but God

  405. meant it for

  406. good to

  407. bring it

  408. about that

  409. many people

  410. should be

  411. kept alive

  412. as they are

  413. today.

  414. And that

  415. was God's

  416. way of saving

  417. the nation

  418. of Israel

  419. from starvation

  420. back where

  421. they lived.

  422. That was God's

  423. way of preserving

  424. his chosen

  425. people

  426. and the

  427. Savior who

  428. came from

  429. them.

  430. Number two,

  431. God works

  432. through suffering

  433. to accomplish

  434. his purpose.

  435. Joseph suffered

  436. for years at

  437. the hands of

  438. his brother,

  439. Potiphar's wife

  440. and the cup

  441. bearer who

  442. forgot about

  443. him,

  444. resulting in

  445. Joseph staying

  446. longer in

  447. prison.

  448. But you have

  449. to take your

  450. hat off to

  451. Joseph.

  452. Through it

  453. all,

  454. he knew

  455. that the

  456. Lord had a

  457. purpose for

  458. this.

  459. He knew

  460. that the

  461. Lord was

  462. with him

  463. and he

  464. remained

  465. faithful.

  466. Look at

  467. these examples

  468. from Scripture.

  469. The Lord

  470. was with

  471. Joseph and

  472. he became

  473. a successful

  474. man and

  475. he was in

  476. the house

  477. of his

  478. Egyptian

  479. master.

  480. at the

  481. end of

  482. that chapter.

  483. But the

  484. Lord was

  485. with

  486. Joseph and

  487. showed him

  488. steadfast love

  489. and gave him

  490. favor in the

  491. sight of the

  492. keeper of the

  493. prison.

  494. This is God's

  495. providence.

  496. God worked

  497. through the

  498. sinful actions

  499. of Joseph's

  500. brothers

  501. to put

  502. Joseph in

  503. Egypt.

  504. God took

  505. care of

  506. Joseph in

  507. Potiphar's

  508. house after

  509. he was

  510. wrongly accused

  511. by Potiphar's

  512. wife.

  513. God took

  514. care of

  515. Joseph in

  516. prison and

  517. then eventually

  518. elevated him.

  519. The next one

  520. here, God

  521. worked through

  522. success to

  523. accomplish his

  524. purpose.

  525. When Joseph

  526. became second

  527. in command

  528. over all

  529. Egypt, the

  530. Lord used

  531. that, that

  532. success for

  533. good.

  534. Look at this

  535. in Genesis

  536. 41.

  537. Then Pharaoh

  538. said to

  539. Joseph, since

  540. God has shown

  541. you all this,

  542. interpreting the

  543. dream, there is

  544. none so

  545. discerning and

  546. wise as you

  547. are.

  548. You shall be

  549. over my

  550. house and

  551. all my people

  552. shall order

  553. themselves as

  554. you command,

  555. only as

  556. regards the

  557. throne, will

  558. I be greater

  559. than you.

  560. God worked

  561. through the

  562. sin and the

  563. suffering to

  564. make him

  565. successful and

  566. provide a place

  567. for his family

  568. to come and

  569. then to say to

  570. them, there's

  571. that passage

  572. again, we read

  573. a moment ago,

  574. as for you,

  575. you brothers,

  576. you meant evil

  577. against me, but

  578. God meant it for

  579. good to bring

  580. about that many

  581. people should be

  582. kept alive as

  583. they are today.

  584. Now, let's

  585. think about it.

  586. The providential

  587. workings of

  588. God or the

  589. sovereign work of

  590. God, if you

  591. want to think

  592. about it that

  593. way, should

  594. help us to

  595. trust that God

  596. is involved in

  597. the world.

  598. He's involved in

  599. this country.

  600. He's involved in

  601. our lives.

  602. God's life is

  603. for an ultimately

  604. good purpose.

  605. The world's not

  606. going to last

  607. forever.

  608. It's going to

  609. come to an end.

  610. The United States

  611. may not last

  612. forever.

  613. It may not last,

  614. it may not be

  615. anything like the

  616. next 50 years as

  617. it has been the

  618. last 50 years.

  619. We're not going

  620. to live in this

  621. world forever.

  622. God is at work,

  623. but we don't know

  624. how he's at work.

  625. It's wrong for us

  626. as Christians to

  627. think, well, God's

  628. going to work in

  629. this mess of a

  630. country that we're

  631. in right now and

  632. everything's going to

  633. turn out well.

  634. It may not.

  635. We may implode and

  636. never not exist 50

  637. years from now, 100

  638. years from now.

  639. We don't know, but

  640. God is at work.

  641. In times of

  642. crisis, we don't

  643. usually understand

  644. what God is doing

  645. as he works.

  646. We don't usually

  647. understand how he's

  648. involved, what he's

  649. doing, why he's

  650. doing it.

  651. That's where faith

  652. comes in.

  653. And we're not

  654. talking about blind

  655. faith, faith and

  656. faith.

  657. We're talking about

  658. faith in God who

  659. is good and who

  660. is in control and

  661. who has a plan that

  662. he's working out in

  663. this world that will

  664. ultimately lead to

  665. his glory and his

  666. people's eternal

  667. blessings.

  668. More often than not,

  669. we have to look back

  670. over time to see how

  671. God has been at work.

  672. That's what Joseph had

  673. to do.

  674. He didn't see, he

  675. didn't understand all

  676. that in the middle, but

  677. he could look back and

  678. see it.

  679. That's what he said in

  680. chapter 50 verse 20.

  681. But we'll never

  682. understand everything.

  683. Why God allowed

  684. someone's sinful

  685. choices to cause us or

  686. somebody we love to

  687. suffer?

  688. We may not ever

  689. understand that.

  690. We may never know

  691. that.

  692. But there's nothing

  693. wrong with asking

  694. why.

  695. Some people say, it's

  696. wrong to question God.

  697. It's wrong to question

  698. if God knows what he's

  699. doing.

  700. It's wrong to question if

  701. God is good.

  702. But it's not wrong to

  703. question and say, why?

  704. The psalmist does.

  705. Because, you know,

  706. between you and God,

  707. between me and God, we

  708. all in here may be

  709. honest.

  710. And we just talk to him

  711. and tell him what we

  712. struggle with.

  713. But we don't do a whole

  714. lot of that in front of

  715. one another.

  716. Do we?

  717. We keep that pretty

  718. close.

  719. Talk about everything

  720. being great when it's

  721. not.

  722. Well, the psalmist, he

  723. wrote this.

  724. And a lot of the psalms

  725. are written by David

  726. King.

  727. Look at this, just two

  728. examples.

  729. Why, O Lord, do you

  730. stand far away?

  731. Why do you hide

  732. yourself in times of

  733. trouble?

  734. And then the other

  735. one.

  736. How long, O Lord, will

  737. you forget me forever?

  738. How long will you hide

  739. your face from me?

  740. Me?

  741. Some people just get

  742. mad at God because he

  743. doesn't do what they,

  744. because he doesn't do

  745. what they want them to

  746. do.

  747. What, yeah, what they

  748. want him to do.

  749. Or they just ignore him.

  750. Psalmist is just being

  751. honest.

  752. He feels distant from

  753. God.

  754. And he's talking to God.

  755. You ever ask, you ever

  756. been ticked off or your

  757. spouse ticked off at you

  758. and they ever ask you,

  759. when are you going to

  760. talk to me again?

  761. Or you may like it and

  762. hope they never talk to

  763. you again.

  764. You know, some, who's

  765. according to who you're

  766. married to.

  767. How long are you going to

  768. be mad?

  769. You might ask somebody,

  770. how long are you going to

  771. be mad?

  772. How long are you going to

  773. be mean to me?

  774. How long are you going to

  775. cook what I want you to

  776. cook?

  777. How long before you fry

  778. another chicken?

  779. At least you're

  780. communicating, right?

  781. The psalm, what I want

  782. you to see is the psalmist

  783. is communicating.

  784. It's okay to tell God

  785. what you think because he

  786. already knows it.

  787. And if you think bad, you

  788. know what I think?

  789. God, I just think Jeff's a

  790. jerk.

  791. Lord, I know that's wrong

  792. to think that.

  793. So help me not to think

  794. that.

  795. That's a decent prayer.

  796. If you think that, the

  797. psalmist does stuff like

  798. that.

  799. And those are models for

  800. how we should pray.

  801. The Bible speaks very

  802. little about why everything

  803. works the way it does.

  804. As someone pointed out, God

  805. is not in the habit of

  806. explaining, but he is in

  807. the habit of sustaining.

  808. And that's what a lot of

  809. times he's just going to do.

  810. Just get us through.

  811. And when going back to the

  812. tragedies, if it's your

  813. loved one, friend who dies in

  814. any kind of tragedy, even if God

  815. told you why, it wouldn't help.

  816. They'd still be gone.

  817. Your heart would still be

  818. broken.

  819. And so God is going to mainly

  820. sustain us.

  821. Give us what we need for the

  822. hour, the day, the week, the

  823. month.

  824. But we can trust that there is a

  825. reason.

  826. And we may not ever know it.

  827. Or we may not ever know it this

  828. side of heaven.

  829. We may not know it just

  830. une darüber before the
