  1. Three pastors were having lunch together at a restaurant.

  2. One of them said he wanted to let them know that he had found the most effective way to pray.

  3. He said, what you do is you sit, you fold your hands together, your fingers pointing toward heaven.

  4. That, he said, is just the best way for me to pray.

  5. The second pastor said, well, it's not for me.

  6. The most effective way that I have found to pray is to get on your knees.

  7. That's what most people do in the Bible, he said.

  8. It's just the most, best sign of humility.

  9. Well, the third pastor said, you're both wrong.

  10. The real way to pray for God to hear your prayer is to stretch out, lay flat on the floor with your face down.

  11. Well, there was a telephone repairman sitting at the table next to them and he had overheard what they said.

  12. And so he came up to them and said, excuse me, but I couldn't help but hearing your discussion.

  13. I discovered the most effective way to pray when I was hanging upside down by my feet from a power pole 50 feet in the air.

  14. He said, that's when I prayed desperately.

  15. Now, the telephone repairman was right, wasn't he?

  16. The most effective way to pray has nothing to do with your posture.

  17. Now, I know most people don't worry about it, but there's been some people who've been hung up on that.

  18. Should I kneel?

  19. Should I stand?

  20. Should I really just lie flat on my face?

  21. Whatever works for you.

  22. Whatever way you can be still before the Lord, you do it.

  23. He's not really concerned about your posture.

  24. He's concerned more about your heart.

  25. It's all about our attitude.

  26. It's all about what's going on in our mind, in our heart, in our conscience.

  27. What's really important when we approach God in prayer, or what's really important when we approach God, period,

  28. is to know that we are on a daily basis.

  29. We're desperate for Him.

  30. We're in desperate need of His grace.

  31. We're in desperate need of His help every day, every day of our lives.

  32. The most desperate prayer Jonah ever prayed was from the belly of the great fish,

  33. as we've been looking at in Jonah chapter 2.

    Jonah 2 chapter mention

  34. I want you to think with me.

  35. Why is it that God has to put us in a difficult situation to remind us how much we need Him?

  36. You know, when things are going well, I mean, when life's good, everybody's treating us well.

  37. You know, there's just peace at home, work's going well, school's not stressful, or school's not in session.

  38. When all's going well, we think we don't need God, at least in the sense of,

  39. maybe we don't talk to Him as much.

  40. Maybe we're not as conscious or conscious of His, you know, aware of His presence.

  41. But when something happens,

  42. one of the first things that we as Christians do

  43. is to look to God.

  44. Why is it we have to have such issues, crises, problems

  45. to cause us to be more focused on Him

  46. and our need for Him,

  47. to be close to Him?

  48. This morning,

  49. we're going to look at good news.

  50. We're going to focus on how God

  51. is always ready

  52. and able to meet our needs

  53. when we call on Him

  54. with sincere faith,

  55. with a wholehearted commitment

  56. from a realization that we desperately need Him.

  57. We're going to look at it in the life of Jonah.

  58. Look with me, if you would.

  59. Jonah 2,

  60. and I want us to look at verse 5 today.

  61. We're going to sort of

  62. be reminded of Jonah

  63. sinking into the ocean,

  64. about to drown

  65. when the great fish

  66. picked Him up and saved Him.

  67. That was God's way

  68. of rescuing Him.

  69. Let's read in verse 5.

  70. The waters closed in over me

  71. to take my life.

  72. The deep surrounded me.

  73. That's when He's sinking into the ocean.

  74. Weeds were wrapped around my head.

  75. At the roots of the mountains,

  76. I went down to the land

  77. whose bars closed upon me forever.

  78. Yet,

  79. you brought up my life

  80. from the pit,

  81. O Lord my God.

  82. When my life was fainting away,

  83. I remembered the Lord

  84. and my prayer came to you

  85. and to your holy temple.

  86. Those who pay regard to vain idols

  87. forsake their hope

  88. of steadfast love.

  89. But I,

  90. with the voice of thanksgiving,

  91. will sacrifice to you.

  92. What I have vowed,

  93. I will pay.

  94. Salvation belongs to the Lord.

  95. And when Jonah

  96. came to the Lord

  97. like he did,

  98. cried out to God

  99. for help,

  100. verse 10,

  101. and the Lord spoke to the fish

  102. and it vomited Jonah out

  103. upon the dry land.

  104. I want us to look first

  105. at how God rescues us

  106. from a motivation of grace.

  107. I want us to understand

  108. we're talking about

  109. being desperate for God.

  110. We're talking about looking to Him,

  111. crying out for Him.

  112. But I want you to understand,

  113. when God comes to us

  114. in our times of need,

  115. He's coming

  116. because within Him

  117. there is love for us,

  118. there is His undeserved favor,

  119. His grace

  120. that motivates Him

  121. to come to us.

  122. God answers our desperate prayers

  123. even while we are still suffering

  124. the consequences

  125. of our disobedience.

  126. Why did Jonah pray

  127. from the belly of the fish?

  128. Because he'd been thrown overboard

  129. from the ship.

  130. The ship that he was on

  131. to deliberately try

  132. to get away from God

  133. and get away from doing God's will.

  134. God sent the fish

  135. to graciously intervene

  136. in Jonah's life,

  137. to swallow Jonah,

  138. to keep him from drowning.

  139. The way God

  140. graciously rescued Jonah

  141. was not something

  142. out of the ordinary for God.

  143. This is just how God works.

  144. We see it over and over again

  145. in the Bible.

  146. If you're familiar

  147. with the people of Israel,

  148. they were constantly

  149. as God's chosen people,

  150. seeing God work in their life

  151. in miraculous ways,

  152. work in their country

  153. for hundreds of years.

  154. They were constantly, though,

  155. rebelling against him,

  156. ignoring him,

  157. disobeying him,

  158. turning to idols,

  159. false gods.

  160. And when they did these things,

  161. God intervened

  162. to convict them,

  163. break them,

  164. discipline them.

  165. And sooner or later,

  166. they got the message

  167. and they came back to him

  168. in confession and repentance

  169. over and over and over again.

  170. I want you to look at an example

  171. of God,

  172. just His graciousness.

  173. It's in Psalm 106,

  174. beginning in verse 43.

  175. Again and again,

  176. He rescued them,

  177. but they chose

  178. to rebel against Him,

  179. and they were finally destroyed

  180. by their sin.

  181. Even so,

  182. He pitied them

  183. in their distress

  184. and listened

  185. to their cries.

  186. He remembered His covenant

  187. with them

  188. and relented

  189. because of His

  190. unfailing love.

  191. God puts up

  192. the light,

  193. doesn't He?

  194. He sure is gracious.

  195. I want you to understand,

  196. if you're in trouble

  197. right now

  198. because of your disobedience,

  199. understand that you can turn

  200. to God

  201. in desperate prayer

  202. and He will hear you.

  203. It may be

  204. that what's going on

  205. in your,

  206. it may be

  207. that your way

  208. of disobeying God

  209. has affected

  210. your family life.

  211. It may be

  212. it's affected

  213. what's going on

  214. where you work.

  215. Your sin

  216. has gotten you

  217. into trouble.

  218. Your sin

  219. has caused

  220. a rift,

  221. actually a severance

  222. of a relationship.

  223. It may be

  224. that your sin

  225. is,

  226. in terms of other people,

  227. is secret.

  228. Nobody knows.

  229. The trouble

  230. you are experiencing,

  231. maybe it's depression,

  232. maybe it's anger.

  233. You're doing this.

  234. You're being disciplined

  235. by God.

  236. I want you

  237. to understand

  238. that if you'll

  239. just wake up,

  240. own up,

  241. confess that sin,

  242. God will hear.

  243. He doesn't have to,

  244. but God will.

  245. Even if it's the

  246. 10th

  247. or the 100th

  248. time

  249. you've come

  250. to Him

  251. this way,

  252. if you are

  253. truly

  254. serious,

  255. sincere,

  256. wholehearted,

  257. repentant,

  258. wanting to be

  259. forgiven

  260. and made right

  261. with God,

  262. He will

  263. graciously

  264. receive you,

  265. forgive you.

  266. And what I want

  267. you to understand

  268. is,

  269. you don't have

  270. to clean up

  271. your own act

  272. before you do that.

  273. Some people

  274. have the idea,

  275. before I can

  276. ever come to God,

  277. I've got to

  278. clean up the mess

  279. I've made

  280. in my family.

  281. I've got to

  282. work on,

  283. make myself

  284. presentable to God.

  285. No,

  286. you don't.

  287. In order for you

  288. to clean up

  289. the mess,

  290. in order for you

  291. to become

  292. presentable,

  293. you need God's

  294. intervention.

  295. You need His

  296. spiritual,

  297. moral

  298. cleansing.

  299. You do need

  300. to admit

  301. your sin.

  302. You need to

  303. turn from your sin.

  304. You need to

  305. repent.

  306. But our

  307. gracious Heavenly

  308. Father wants you

  309. to come back to Him

  310. now as you are,

  311. where you are,

  312. just like

  313. rebellious and

  314. disobedient Jonah

  315. desperately called

  316. out to God

  317. when he was stuck

  318. in the belly

  319. of the great fish.

  320. Some of you,

  321. and nobody's

  322. told me anything,

  323. but some of you

  324. are stuck

  325. in some kind

  326. of morally

  327. wrong situation.

  328. some of you

  329. are stuck

  330. right now

  331. in the consequence

  332. of your

  333. stubborn

  334. rebellion

  335. against God,

  336. against the

  337. teaching of His

  338. Word.

  339. Some of you

  340. are stuck

  341. and people

  342. around you

  343. are paying

  344. the price,

  345. just like people

  346. around Jonah

  347. suffered from

  348. his sin.

  349. That can end.

  350. You don't have

  351. to live

  352. in frustration.

  353. You don't have

  354. to live

  355. with that guilt.

  356. You don't have

  357. to be angry

  358. at everyone

  359. and everything

  360. around you.

  361. But you do

  362. have to stop,

  363. admit it,

  364. change your mind,

  365. look to God,

  366. admit you are

  367. desperate for Him.

  368. And I want

  369. to encourage

  370. you,

  371. do it now.

  372. This moment.

  373. Tune me out

  374. and you just

  375. go to the Lord

  376. in prayer.

  377. Do what needs

  378. to be done.

  379. Jonah helps

  380. us to see

  381. that God

  382. rescues us

  383. because He's

  384. a gracious

  385. God.

  386. He's merciful.

  387. He didn't

  388. want to give

  389. us what we

  390. deserve.

  391. He wants

  392. to show us

  393. grace.

  394. But also,

  395. Jonah lets

  396. us see

  397. that there

  398. are no

  399. hopeless

  400. situations

  401. for God's

  402. people.

  403. Number two,

  404. God rescues

  405. us from

  406. situations

  407. that seem

  408. hopeless.

  409. That's what

  410. Jonah's

  411. situation was.

  412. Jonah was

  413. sinking to

  414. the bottom

  415. of the ocean

  416. and he

  417. describes it

  418. in this

  419. psalm.

  420. Look at it.

  421. The waters

  422. closed in

  423. over me

  424. to take

  425. my life.

  426. The deep

  427. surrounded

  428. me.

  429. Weeds

  430. were wrapped

  431. around my

  432. head at

  433. the roots

  434. of the

  435. mountains.

  436. I went

  437. down to

  438. the land

  439. whose bars

  440. closed upon

  441. me forever.

  442. Jonah was

  443. going to

  444. die.

  445. There was

  446. no way to

  447. escape if

  448. God had not

  449. intervened.

  450. Sometimes

  451. we find

  452. ourselves in

  453. some situations

  454. where we

  455. can't really

  456. see how

  457. we can't

  458. see any

  459. light at

  460. the end

  461. of a

  462. tunnel.

  463. All of

  464. us are

  465. capable of

  466. doing or

  467. saying things

  468. that can

  469. cause a

  470. lot of

  471. pain.

  472. The people

  473. that we

  474. love and

  475. really don't

  476. want to

  477. hurt.

  478. Sometimes we

  479. can cause

  480. problems,

  481. pain for

  482. people we

  483. don't even

  484. know.

  485. Jonah did

  486. that.

  487. and we

  488. can hurt

  489. ourselves.

  490. We know

  491. that.

  492. It may

  493. be that in

  494. your situation

  495. you have

  496. so hurt

  497. some people,

  498. so wounded

  499. some people

  500. that you

  501. don't know

  502. that you

  503. can ever be

  504. reconciled,

  505. that they

  506. can ever

  507. forgive you.

  508. I'm not

  509. going to

  510. promise what

  511. someone else

  512. is going to

  513. do.

  514. But we'll

  515. tell you

  516. this,

  517. even though

  518. there's times

  519. when we

  520. think we

  521. have gone

  522. too far,

  523. sunk too

  524. low for

  525. God to

  526. do anything,

  527. we haven't.

  528. Jonah shows

  529. us that it's

  530. never too

  531. late for

  532. us to

  533. wake up

  534. and call

  535. out to

  536. him.

  537. Look what

  538. he says,

  539. yet you

  540. brought up

  541. my life

  542. from the

  543. pit,

  544. O Lord

  545. my God.

  546. Whenever our

  547. sinful actions

  548. put us in

  549. what appears

  550. to be a

  551. hopeless

  552. situation,

  553. we can

  554. never give

  555. up.

  556. We can

  557. never give

  558. up.

  559. As long

  560. as you

  561. have breath,

  562. you do

  563. have hope.

  564. You know,

  565. we need to

  566. encourage people

  567. around about

  568. us that

  569. same idea,

  570. that same

  571. thought.

  572. You may

  573. know some

  574. people right

  575. now,

  576. they're as low

  577. as low can

  578. be.

  579. they feel,

  580. and maybe

  581. they've expressed

  582. to you why

  583. they are

  584. hopeless.

  585. I want to

  586. encourage you,

  587. don't let

  588. someone give

  589. up on life

  590. if you can

  591. help it.

  592. Don't let

  593. anyone think

  594. that they are

  595. beyond the

  596. reach of

  597. God's grace,

  598. of His

  599. help,

  600. of His

  601. forgiveness,

  602. of what He

  603. can do in

  604. their life.

  605. Reach out to

  606. that person,

  607. encourage that

  608. person,

  609. listen to

  610. that person,

  611. and let

  612. that person

  613. know that

  614. it may be

  615. that their

  616. only hope

  617. is to be

  618. found in

  619. God,

  620. and His

  621. grace,

  622. His mercy,

  623. His

  624. involvement in

  625. their life,

  626. in the people's

  627. life they've

  628. affected,

  629. in the whole

  630. situation.

  631. we need to

  632. learn from

  633. Jonah,

  634. we saw

  635. last time in

  636. verse 2,

  637. to never

  638. hesitate to

  639. call out to

  640. God in our

  641. desperate

  642. situations.

  643. Look at what

  644. He did.

  645. He says,

  646. I called out

  647. to the Lord

  648. out of my

  649. distress,

  650. and He

  651. answered me.

  652. Out of the

  653. belly of Sheol,

  654. I cried,

  655. the place of

  656. death,

  657. and you

  658. heard my

  659. voice.

  660. I want to

  661. be clear.

  662. If there are

  663. situations that

  664. seem hopeless

  665. because of what

  666. someone else

  667. is or is not

  668. doing or

  669. saying,

  670. you have no

  671. control over

  672. that.

  673. And I don't

  674. want for any

  675. moment to

  676. promise you

  677. what God's

  678. going to do

  679. in somebody

  680. else's life.

  681. But God

  682. will work in

  683. your life

  684. if you come

  685. to Him as

  686. Jonah did.

  687. He may not

  688. make everything

  689. the way you

  690. want it,

  691. but if you're

  692. His child,

  693. He will be

  694. with you.

  695. And let's

  696. look on

  697. next at how

  698. God does

  699. intervene in

  700. our lives,

  701. but not always

  702. the way that

  703. we might

  704. choose.

  705. Number three,

  706. God rescues

  707. us in less

  708. than desirable

  709. ways at

  710. times.

  711. John Piper

  712. makes a

  713. helpful point

  714. about the

  715. way God

  716. sometimes

  717. rescues us.

  718. Look at

  719. what He

  720. says.

  721. God answers

  722. our cries

  723. of distress

  724. in stages,

  725. not all

  726. of which

  727. are comfortable.

  728. We can be

  729. fairly sure

  730. that when

  731. Jonah cried

  732. out to

  733. God,

  734. he did

  735. not say,

  736. O God,

  737. put me in

  738. the belly

  739. of a fish

  740. for three

  741. days.

  742. I want you

  743. to think

  744. about it.

  745. God

  746. graciously

  747. saved

  748. Jonah

  749. by having

  750. a fish

  751. to swallow

  752. him.

  753. That's not

  754. what he

  755. prayed for.

  756. When he

  757. cried out

  758. to God

  759. to save

  760. him,

  761. that's not

  762. what he

  763. had in

  764. mind.

  765. He probably

  766. said,

  767. God save

  768. me,

  769. have mercy,

  770. or something

  771. like that.

  772. Piper goes

  773. on,

  774. God's

  775. answer

  776. came in

  777. stages.

  778. The belly

  779. of a fish

  780. hardly

  781. seems like

  782. salvation,

  783. but it

  784. was.

  785. Jonah

  786. is granted

  787. enough

  788. consciousness

  789. to realize

  790. he's been

  791. spared from

  792. drowning

  793. and that

  794. there is

  795. hope.

  796. He does

  797. not complain

  798. about his

  799. surroundings.

  800. He accepts

  801. God's first

  802. stage of

  803. salvation

  804. as a guarantee

  805. of dry

  806. land and

  807. concludes

  808. his prayer

  809. in the

  810. fish's belly

  811. with the

  812. great

  813. affirmation

  814. deliverance

  815. belongs to

  816. the Lord.

  817. I want us

  818. to understand

  819. and see in

  820. this.

  821. God

  822. graciously

  823. invites us

  824. to call

  825. out to him

  826. in prayer

  827. during our

  828. times of

  829. need.

  830. And when

  831. he answers

  832. our prayer,

  833. however he

  834. answers our

  835. prayer,

  836. we need to

  837. be thankful

  838. and we need

  839. to accept

  840. that answer

  841. that partial

  842. answer,

  843. even that

  844. no answer

  845. and not

  846. complain.

  847. I'm sure

  848. some of you

  849. read this

  850. past week

  851. the story

  852. about the

  853. young man

  854. in India

  855. who received

  856. a new

  857. BMW from

  858. his parents

  859. for his

  860. 22nd birthday.

  861. You know

  862. what he did?

  863. He pushed

  864. it into a

  865. river because

  866. it wasn't

  867. the Jaguar

  868. he wanted.

  869. You talk

  870. about a

  871. moron

  872. to be

  873. given

  874. a BMW

  875. brand new.

  876. And you can

  877. look it up

  878. when you go

  879. home, look

  880. it up online.

  881. There's a

  882. YouTube video

  883. of the

  884. moron

  885. who puts

  886. his BMW

  887. in the

  888. water

  889. because he's

  890. mad that

  891. didn't get

  892. a Jaguar.

  893. Can you

  894. imagine someone

  895. being so

  896. arrogant,

  897. so ungrateful,

  898. so spoiled?

  899. Now think,

  900. how do you

  901. respond to

  902. the gracious

  903. gifts that

  904. God's given

  905. you?

  906. How have

  907. you responded,

  908. how do you

  909. respond to

  910. the gift

  911. of your

  912. spouse?

  913. Now there's

  914. some smart

  915. aleck women

  916. in here.

  917. You're saying

  918. he's God's

  919. gag gift

  920. to me.

  921. I read

  922. that

  923. somewhere.

  924. Men are

  925. God's

  926. gag gifts

  927. to women.

  928. And some

  929. of you guys

  930. may be,

  931. I don't

  932. know,

  933. but all

  934. of us

  935. are not,

  936. are we?

  937. Lisa's in the

  938. other service,

  939. thankfully.

  940. I didn't do

  941. this in the

  942. first service.

  943. I don't want

  944. to know the

  945. answer to

  946. that.

  947. But I want

  948. you to think,

  949. how do you

  950. respond to

  951. God when he

  952. doesn't answer

  953. your prayers

  954. the way that

  955. you wanted

  956. him to?

  957. Do you

  958. thank him?

  959. Do you

  960. accept that

  961. he's God,

  962. he knows

  963. best,

  964. and to

  965. make the

  966. best of

  967. it with

  968. the right

  969. attitude?

  970. You know,

  971. Jonah is

  972. not a good

  973. example in

  974. most of

  975. this book.

  976. In chapter

  977. one, he's a

  978. terrible example.

  979. In chapter

  980. four, he's an

  981. even worse

  982. example.

  983. We'll see

  984. that later.

  985. But here in

  986. chapter two,

  987. Jonah is a

  988. great example,

  989. a model of

  990. gratitude to

  991. God as he

  992. thanked God

  993. for rescuing

  994. him by having

  995. a fish swallow

  996. him.

  997. Jonah had a

  998. good perspective.

  999. love.

  1000. So he

  1001. understood that

  1002. being alive in

  1003. a fish's belly

  1004. was far better

  1005. than being dead

  1006. on the bottom

  1007. of the ocean.

  1008. We need to

  1009. learn to

  1010. never be

  1011. ungrateful for

  1012. what God gives

  1013. us, for what

  1014. God does in

  1015. our lives, for

  1016. the way he

  1017. answers our

  1018. prayers.

  1019. Like Piper

  1020. said,

  1021. sometimes God

  1022. answers us in

  1023. stages.

  1024. And sometimes

  1025. those stages are

  1026. uncomfortable.

  1027. Sometimes they're

  1028. God's discipline

  1029. still, but

  1030. remember, when

  1031. God disciplines

  1032. us, it's

  1033. because he's

  1034. our father and

  1035. he loves us.

  1036. And he always

  1037. has a redemptive

  1038. purpose.

  1039. Let's look at one

  1040. more thing.

  1041. Number four,

  1042. God rescues us

  1043. for the purpose of

  1044. renewing us and

  1045. using us.

  1046. verses eight and

  1047. nine, some

  1048. people refer to

  1049. that as sort of

  1050. like a post

  1051. script to

  1052. Jonah's prayer.

  1053. It's a

  1054. concluding expression

  1055. of thanks, of

  1056. praise, and

  1057. commitment.

  1058. I want you to

  1059. look at verse

  1060. eight again.

  1061. Those who pay

  1062. regard to vain

  1063. idols forsake

  1064. their hope of

  1065. steadfast love.

  1066. We don't know

  1067. why Jonah brings

  1068. up idols here.

  1069. Maybe he has

  1070. the sailors in

  1071. mind because they

  1072. worshiped false

  1073. gods back in

  1074. chapter one, back

  1075. when he was on

  1076. the ship.

  1077. Maybe he brings

  1078. it up because he

  1079. knows many

  1080. people are going

  1081. to hear this being

  1082. read in written

  1083. form or they're

  1084. going to read it.

  1085. And Israel always

  1086. had a problem with

  1087. idolatry.

  1088. So, maybe Jonah

  1089. writes this because

  1090. he knows that even

  1091. God's people back

  1092. then and today have

  1093. problems with

  1094. idols.

  1095. Peter Williams

  1096. explains this.

1097. I want you to look

  1098. at what he says.

  1099. He says, the

  1100. essence of

  1101. idolatry is

  1102. anything that

  1103. commands the

  1104. central place in

  1105. our lives and

  1106. to which we

  1107. give the loyalty

  1108. and devotion which

  1109. rightly belongs to

  1110. God alone.

  1111. That's what

  1112. idolatry is.

  1113. Given to anyone

  1114. or anything that

  1115. which should

  1116. belong to God.

  1117. He goes on to

  1118. say, for some

  1119. people money is

  1120. their God and the

  1121. pursuit of

  1122. materialistic goals

  1123. dominates their

  1124. lives.

  1125. But we can make

  1126. an idol of

  1127. anything, sports,

  1128. sex, drugs,

  1129. politics, career,

  1130. even home and

  1131. family.

  1132. Now just think,

  1133. anything that is

  1134. at the center of

  1135. your life,

  1136. except God,

  1137. that is your

  1138. idol.

  1139. God should be the

  1140. center, the focus,

  1141. the hub of our

  1142. lives.

  1143. And if he's not,

  1144. whatever else is

  1145. there, that is our

  1146. idol.

  1147. Williams goes on to

  1148. conclude, to warn

  1149. us that idols will

  1150. always let us down.

  1151. They will always fail

  1152. to deliver in the

  1153. long run on what

  1154. they promise.

  1155. Whatever you put

  1156. your real emphasis

  1157. on and make your

  1158. idol, sooner or

  1159. later, it's going to

  1160. disappoint you.

  1161. It's not going to

  1162. meet the need that

1163. you want it to meet.

1164. You know, many of the

  1165. things that we make

  1166. idols are actually

  1167. gifts of God's

  1168. grace.

  1169. God gives us things

  1170. like a family, a

  1171. home, a career,

  1172. sports, music,

  1173. sex, money, and

  1174. material things.

  1175. God gives us all

  1176. these things to meet

  1177. legitimate God-given

  1178. needs.

1179. God wants us to use

  1180. these things, to enjoy

  1181. these things.

1182. But he wants us to

1183. never lose sight of the

  1184. fact that these are

  1185. gifts that come from

  1186. him, the giver.

  1187. And our ultimate source

1188. of joy is the giver

  1189. who's given us

  1190. these things.

  1191. Jonah ends his

  1192. prayer with an

  1193. expression of

  1194. thanksgiving and

  1195. commitment in verse

  1196. 9.

  1197. He promises to offer

  1198. sacrifices to God.

1199. We don't do that kind

  1200. of thing today.

  1201. We don't offer animal

  1202. sacrifices for an

  1203. example.

  1204. Because Jesus was the

  1205. ultimate and the

  1206. final sacrifice for

  1207. our sins.

  1208. And God has accepted

  1209. his sacrifice.

  1210. So we don't do

  1211. that.

  1212. We shouldn't do

  1213. that.

  1214. It would be wrong

  1215. to do that.

  1216. But Paul says in

  1217. Romans chapter 12 that

    Romans 12 chapter mention

1218. we are to be living

  1219. sacrifices.

  1220. We're supposed to

  1221. produce good works, he

  1222. tells us in other

  1223. places, out of

  1224. gratitude for God's

  1225. gift of salvation.

  1226. Our sacrifices, our

  1227. good works may take

  1228. the form of giving

  1229. our time in serving

  1230. the Lord.

1231. As we give our time,

  1232. we give our talents.

  1233. We give our money.

1234. We give what God has

  1235. given us.

1236. We give it back to

  1237. him.

1238. To serve him, to serve

  1239. his people, to serve

  1240. his purposes.

1241. How do you express your

  1242. gratitude and love to

1243. God for the way that he

1244. has rescued you from sin

  1245. and death?

1246. How do you show your

1247. gratitude to God for the

1248. way that he has blessed

1249. you with the good gifts?

  1250. What kind of sacrifices

1251. or efforts do you offer

1252. back to him motivated by

  1253. love, motivated by

  1254. gratitude?

1255. How do you show him?

  1256. You know, Jonah's vow,

1257. he talks about next, is

1258. most likely his promise to

1259. obey God's call to go back

  1260. to Nineveh, which we're

1261. going to start looking at

1262. next week in chapter 3.

1263. The final word of this

1264. prayer may be the most

  1265. important one.

  1266. Salvation belongs to the

  1267. Lord.

1268. And we're going to look at

1269. a lot of implications of

1270. that in chapter 3 and 4 as

1271. we move on through Jonah.

1272. But Jonah now realizes that

1273. God put him in the ocean and

1274. the fish not to destroy him,

1275. but to save him, to rescue

1276. him, not just physically but

1277. spiritually, to rescue him in

1278. order to use him again.

1279. If you are away from the Lord

1280. due to your disobedience, due to

1281. your sinful actions, I want you

1282. to know that you can come back

  1283. to him right now.

1284. And I want to encourage you to

1285. come back now because you want

  1286. to, you're ready to, and don't

1287. wait for God to discipline you

  1288. like he did Jonah.

  1289. I've tried to emphasize

  1290. throughout this.

1291. I emphasize it in a big way in

  1292. another message.

1293. If you are God's person, if God

1294. has chosen you, saved you, and

1295. is working in you for a specific

1296. purpose, sometimes he is so

1297. determined that you will do it

1298. that he'll do whatever it takes

1299. to put you in a position where

1300. you'll say, I'm ready to do it.

1301. And that's what he did for

  1302. Jonah.

1303. Sometimes God lets us miss out on

1304. blessings, but sometimes he is so

1305. determined that he's going to use

1306. us that he'll put us flat on our

  1307. back.

1308. He put Jonah in the belly of a

1309. whale, but he will use us.

1310. Wouldn't it be so much easier, so

1311. much easier for us to do it at

  1312. God's call?

1313. Think about how you get

  1314. disciplined.

1315. Some of you in this room maybe.

1316. There probably have been times in

1317. this room where you sitting with

1318. your parents or grandparents, you've

  1319. cut up some.

  1320. Maybe your parent or

1321. grandparent, at first they put

1322. their hand on your leg.

1323. But you don't get it.

1324. And so they pinch you on the

1325. flabby part of your arm.

  1326. But you're hard-headed.

1327. So they get this place in your

1328. neck where you just go to your

  1329. knees.

1330. And then you get it.

1331. Or they just wait till you get

1332. home and just wear your rear end

  1333. out.

1334. In some ways, God's discipline is

  1335. like that.

1336. I think a lot of times God starts

1337. out just putting his hand on our

1338. leg just to let us know,

  1339. straighten up.

  1340. Obey me.

  1341. Do what's right.

1342. Sometimes he has to pinch us.

1343. Sometimes he has to grab us and put

  1344. us on our knees.

1345. But sometimes we can be very, very

  1346. bull-headed and hard-headed.

1347. And sometimes God will just whip us.

1348. And that's what he did to Jonah.

1349. It's taken me most of my life.

  1350. I still don't always.

1351. But it's better to do things the easy

  1352. way.

  1353. And I want you,

1354. if there's something going on,

1355. you're just not close to God the way

1356. you know you should be.

  1357. You have been maybe.

1358. And God's trying to call you back.

1359. Do it the easy way.

1360. Call out to him right now and let him

1361. know that you are confessing your sin.

1362. You're turning from that disobedient

  1363. attitude.

1364. And you're going to do things his way.

  1371. To your pursuit.

  1372. To your conviction.

  1373. To your encouragement maybe.

1374. And help us to do it.

1375. Help us to respond to you,

  1376. our gracious Father.

1377. And Lord, if there are people in this room

  1378. who are not Christians,

1379. help them to see that

  1381. to understand

1382. they are far from you,

1383. separated from you by their sin.

  1384. And their only hope

  1388. that attitude.

1389. Trust Jesus as their Savior.

1390. Help them to call upon him

  1391. right now.

1392. Let's just all listen to the Lord

1393. and obey him during this time.

1394. And if I could pray with you,

  1395. I'd be honored

1396. to do that right here at the front

1397. in these next few minutes.

  1398. knowledge of the someday.
