  1. A young man from Anderson, South Carolina, came home from World War II and realized his dream of playing professional baseball.

  2. After a few years in the minor leagues' lower levels, he realized, I'm never going to make it to the major leagues.

  3. And so he gave up baseball, settled down in Anderson with his wife and young son, went to work, and became a committed Christian.

  4. But not long after he left the baseball world, he found out that his wife was cheating on him.

  5. When he confronted her about it, she said she was going to leave him because, in her words, I married a baseball player.

  6. He was devastated, as anyone would be, but it hurt even more to be told that working a regular job and living a faithful Christian life

  7. was not what this woman wanted in a husband.

  8. Well, a few years later, he met a single lady who was looking for someone just like him.

  9. Committed Christian, committed to home and family.

  10. They were married for 52 years until her death just a few years ago.

  11. Now, this man is 96 years old, and he tells everyone who will listen that the Lord blessed him with 52 years of marriage to a perfect wife.

  12. He emphasizes 52 years of marriage.

  13. He emphasizes 52 years married to a perfect wife.

  14. Now, it's obvious to anyone who knows this man's story that God gave him, that God graciously gave him a second chance at marriage.

  15. And he made the most of it.

  16. Have you ever thought about how God is in the business of giving people second chances?

  17. Well, that's going to be the focus of our study in Jonah chapter 3 this morning.

    Jonah 3 chapter mention

  18. If you would turn to the book of Jonah as we continue our study.

  19. We're now in chapter 3.

  20. And what we're going to see is how God gave Jonah a second chance to do his will.

  21. Read with me.

  22. Jonah 3, verse 1.

    Jonah 3:1

  23. Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,

  24. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.

  25. So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord.

  26. Now, Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth.

  27. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey, and he called out,

  28. Yet 40 days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

  29. And the people of Nineveh believed God.

  30. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest of them to the least of them.

  31. We're going to stop there this morning.

  32. The point that we are going to look at, what I want to really major on this morning,

  33. is that we serve a God who has a habit of graciously giving us second chances.

  34. And the last word is plural.

  35. Because God gives us more than just one second chance, doesn't he?

  36. So what I want us to do is to look at this with the idea of,

  37. God has graciously given me chance after chance after chance after I've blown it.

  38. I need to be thankful, and I need to learn to make the most of the second chances he gives me.

  39. Number one, I want us to say that God often gives us second chances.

  40. Note in this little chart that will be on the screen,

  41. God's call to Jonah is nearly identical from chapter one to chapter three.

  42. Note in chapter one,

  43. Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying,

  44. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it,

  45. for their evil has come up before me.

  46. Then in chapter three,

  47. Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,

  48. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city,

  49. and call out against it the message that I tell you.

  50. Jonah heard that call at the beginning,

  51. but he rebelled.

  52. He tried to get away from God.

  53. He didn't want to do it.

  54. And then in chapter two, or the end of chapter one and chapter two,

  55. God pursued Jonah, broke him, humbled him.

  56. And Jonah responded by confessing his sin and coming back to God in a renewed commitment.

  57. Well, now in chapter three,

  58. he is given for all practical reasons,

  59. the same call.

  60. That's a sign of God's grace to Jonah.

  61. God is giving his rebellious prophet a second chance to be faithful.

  62. A commentator by the name of O. Palmer Robertson says,

  63. This helps us see some of the qualities of God's grace.

  64. I want you to look at some of the qualities of our Heavenly Father's grace

  65. that we need to be so thankful for.

  66. Look at it.

  67. God forgets and never holds the things against you.

  68. Think of how wonderful are the implications of that one fact for your life.

  69. God simply does not hold grudges against people who humble themselves

  70. and ask his forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

  71. Some of you may need to let that really sink in.

  72. God forgets when he forgives.

  73. God doesn't hold grudges against us.

  74. He doesn't keep throwing it up to us.

  75. There may be someone in your life

  76. who refuses to forget your sin or your failures.

  77. And they make it their point to not let you forget.

  78. Such people, I want you to understand,

  79. they are not God's messengers.

  80. They're the devils.

  81. When God forgives,

  82. He cleanses us.

  83. He puts it in the past.

  84. He will not remember it anymore.

  85. And I want you to understand,

  86. if there's someone in your life that just won't forgive you,

  87. always bringing it back up,

  88. always implying something about your past failures,

  89. don't listen to them.

  90. They're not worthy of your time or your attention.

  91. And they are certainly not God's spokesperson.

  92. That's just the devil talking through them.

  93. They may not be to the core evil,

  94. but they're acting in an evil kind of way.

  95. And I want to encourage you,

  96. don't listen to them.

  97. There's some people who like to be that way.

  98. Don't listen to them.

  99. God gives us second and third and tenth and twentieth

  100. and hundreds of chances

  101. when we truly humble ourselves,

  102. repent of our sin,

  103. and come back to Him in obedience.

  104. Jonah is a great example

  105. that God forgives.

  106. And God gives us fresh starts

  107. in serving Him.

  108. You know,

  109. this is really not an unusual thing

  110. what we see in Jonah.

  111. Jonah, I mean,

  112. God has a track record

  113. of giving His people second chances,

  114. some of the most important people in the Bible.

  115. Abraham.

  116. Abraham.

  117. He was chosen by God

  118. to be the father

  119. of what would become the nation of Israel.

  120. Paul tells us in the New Testament

  121. that Abraham is also the father

  122. of all people of faith.

  123. He's our father as Christians as well.

  124. When God first called Abraham,

  125. he didn't obey God fully.

  126. I want you to look with me.

  127. It's going to be from Acts chapter 7.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  128. Stephen is sort of giving us

  129. an oral history of the people of Israel.

  130. He tells us this about Abraham.

  131. When he was first called,

  132. he was living in a place called Ur,

  133. and God said,

  134. go out from your land

  135. and from your kindred

  136. and go into the land

  137. that I will show you.

  138. That was the promised land,

  139. what would be called that later on.

  140. But Abraham stopped short of it.

  141. Abraham settled hundreds of miles

  142. from where God was going to take him

  143. in a place called Haran.

  144. Look at this from Genesis 11.

  145. Talking about Abraham and his family.

  146. They went forth together

  147. from Ur of the Chaldeans

  148. to go into the land of Canaan,

  149. but when they came to Haran,

  150. they settled there.

  151. They shouldn't have.

  152. That was not where God was leading him.

  153. That's not where God was going to do

  154. what he was going to do

  155. through Abraham.

  156. Now, later on,

  157. God called,

  158. his name is Abram

  159. at this point in time.

  160. He called Abram

  161. a second time.

  162. And look what happens.

  163. Genesis 12.

  164. Now the Lord said to Abram,

  165. go from your country

  166. and your kindred

  167. and your father's house

  168. to the land I will show you

  169. and I will make of you

  170. a great nation.

  171. So Abram went

  172. as the Lord had told him.

  173. Abraham.

  174. He disobeyed at first.

  175. He didn't do all

  176. that God told him to do,

  177. but God gave him

  178. a second chance.

  179. The Apostle Peter

  180. is well known

  181. for the way that he failed

  182. the Lord Jesus.

  183. He denied,

  184. not once, not twice,

  185. but three times

  186. that he even knew Jesus.

  187. Well, shortly after that,

  188. Peter was broken

  189. in his own spirit.

  190. He repented

  191. of what he had done.

  192. And after Jesus

  193. arose from the grave,

  194. Jesus made it a point

  195. to restore Peter.

  196. We did a series on that

  197. from John chapter 21

    John 21 chapter mention

  198. a few years ago.

  199. Peter had denied

  200. Jesus three times,

  201. so three times

  202. Jesus asked Peter,

  203. do you love me?

  204. And three times

  205. Peter said yes.

  206. Jesus not only

  207. restored him

  208. to fellowship with him,

  209. but Jesus also

  210. commissioned him

  211. or recommissioned him

  212. to feed his people,

  213. feed his sheep.

  214. Peter received

  215. a second chance

  216. to be faithful.

  217. And that's what we see

  218. in chapter three.

  219. Jonah receives

  220. a second chance

  221. to be faithful,

  222. and this time he is.

  223. Look again.

  224. He obeyed God's call

  225. in verse three.

  226. So Jonah arose

  227. and went to Nineveh

  228. according to the word

  229. of the Lord.

  230. We need to,

  231. we need to look carefully

  232. at how God gives

  233. his people,

  234. you and me,

  235. second chances.

  236. God often

  237. gives us second chances

  238. when it comes

  239. to obeying him,

  240. but,

  241. and this is

  242. an important but,

  243. he does it always.

  244. One of the most

  245. shocking examples

  246. of God's

  247. ultimate discipline

  248. is found in

  249. the book of Acts

  250. chapter five.

  251. I encourage you

  252. to read it today

  253. when you go home,

  254. the first part

  255. of Acts chapter five.

  256. A husband and wife

  257. named Ananias

  258. and Sapphira,

  259. they were church members.

  260. Well, they sold

  261. a piece of property,

  262. but held back

  263. some of the prophets

  264. and told the apostles

  265. they'd gave it all.

  266. They'd given it all.

  267. It was their property

  268. and they didn't have

  269. to sell it.

  270. When they did sell it,

  271. what they got

  272. was their money.

  273. They didn't have

  274. to give any of it.

  275. But they,

  276. for whatever reason,

  277. maybe to look

  278. like someone special

  279. in the eyes

  280. of other church members,

  281. they lied

  282. to the apostles

  283. about what they had given

  284. and as soon as

  285. they were confronted

  286. about their lie,

  287. they fell down dead.

  288. God killed them.

  289. God did not

  290. give them a chance

  291. to repent.

  292. God did not

  293. give them

  294. a second chance.

  295. I say this

  296. to say

  297. we need

  298. to be careful

  299. that we do not

  300. presume upon

  301. God's grace.

  302. Daniel Aiken

  303. points this out.

  304. He says,

  305. we should never dismiss

  306. God's call

  307. or delay

  308. or delay

  309. in responding

  310. to Him.

  311. God does not

  312. guarantee

  313. a second chance.

  314. Sin and disobedience

  315. have consequences

  316. and it is possible

  317. to miss

  318. God's best

  319. when we refuse

  320. His plan

  321. or attempt

  322. to run

  323. from His presence

  324. like Jonah.

  325. We cannot

  326. make too much

  327. of God's grace

  328. and God's mercy

  329. because the Bible

  330. from cover to cover,

  331. the Bible

  332. emphasizes

  333. our God

  334. is a God

  335. of grace

  336. and mercy.

  337. I am not

  338. in any way

  339. trying to

  340. de-emphasize that

  341. but at the same time

  342. God does not

  343. choose

  344. in every instance

  345. to show

  346. grace

  347. but sometimes

  348. to give

  349. justice

  350. just like He did

  351. with Ananias

  352. and Sapphira

  353. and others

  354. that you

  355. probably can

  356. think about

  357. as you think

  358. about what you

  359. know about

  360. the Bible.

  361. But while God

  362. does not guarantee

  363. us second chances

  364. He does

  365. often

  366. choose to

  367. show us

  368. patience

  369. and grace

  370. just like He did

  371. with Jonah.

  372. I am so

  373. thankful

  374. right now

  375. that God

  376. has been

  377. patient with me

  378. all my life.

  379. I am so

  380. thankful

  381. that He has

  382. shown to

  383. show me

  384. grace

  385. and not

  386. justice.

  387. I am so

  388. thankful

  389. for the

  390. opportunities

  391. He has

  392. given me

  393. to confess

  394. my sin.

  395. For the guilt

  396. He has

  397. inflicted on me

  398. to cause me

  399. to want to

  400. turn from it.

  401. I am so

  402. thankful

  403. that God

  404. has allowed

  405. me to come

  406. back to Him

  407. to make

  408. new commitments

  409. to serve

  410. Him

  411. afresh.

  412. I hope

  413. you are

  414. because if

  415. you're

  416. here

  417. that means

  418. you have

  419. experienced

  420. God's

  421. multiple

  422. chances

  423. multiple

  424. new

  425. starts.

  426. More often

  427. than not

  428. God does

  429. offer us

  430. second

  431. chances.

  432. You may

  433. have never

  434. thought about

  435. it this way

  436. but John

  437. is describing

  438. God's

  439. second chances

  440. in one of the

  441. most important

  442. promises in

  443. all the Bible.

  444. Look at this

  445. in 1 John

  446. 1.9

  447. I've put it

  448. on the screen

  449. probably a

  450. hundred times

  451. over the

  452. years.

  453. If we

  454. confess our

  455. sins

  456. He is

  457. faithful

  458. and just

  459. to forgive

  460. us our

  461. sins

  462. and to

  463. cleanse us

  464. from all

  465. unrighteousness.

  466. that's God's

  467. promise of a

  468. second chance

  469. a fresh start

  470. if we

  471. confess our

  472. sin.

  473. He is

  474. faithful.

  475. He is

  476. just to

  477. forgive us

  478. and not

  479. just forgive

  480. us but

  481. to cleanse

  482. us

  483. and give us

  484. that fresh

  485. start.

  486. God

  487. forgave

  488. Jonah.

  489. God

  490. restored him

  491. to fellowship

  492. with himself

  493. and God

  494. recommissioned

  495. Jonah

  496. to useful

  497. service.

  498. That's what

  499. I want us to

  500. look at next.

  501. God

  502. sometimes

  503. blesses our

  504. second chances

  505. with great

  506. success.

  507. Jonah

  508. obeyed God's

  509. call to preach

  510. to the people

  511. of Nineveh

  512. and look

  513. how God

  514. blessed

  515. his efforts.

  516. Verse 5

  517. again

  518. and the

  519. people of

  520. Nineveh

  521. believed

  522. God.

  523. They called

  524. for a

  525. fast

  526. and put

  527. on sack

  528. cloth.

  529. They

  530. publicly

  531. demonstrated

  532. their

  533. repentance

  534. and this

  535. happened

  536. from the

  537. greatest

  538. of them

  539. to the

  540. least

  541. of them.

  542. We're

  543. going to

  544. go into

  545. more detail

  546. next week

  547. about how

  548. they responded

  549. how God

  550. worked

  551. and they

  552. responded

  553. what I

  554. want us

  555. to see

  556. here is

  557. God

  558. blessed

  559. Jonah's

  560. second

  561. chance

  562. in a

  563. tremendous

  564. way

  565. and that's

  566. not unusual.

  567. The Bible

  568. reveals that

  569. God greatly

  570. blessed some

  571. of his

  572. greatest

  573. leaders

  574. when he

  575. gave them

  576. the second

  577. chance.

  578. Abraham

  579. the father

  580. of the

  581. nation of

  582. Israel.

  583. Well

  584. Abraham

  585. had the

  586. promised

  587. child

  588. Isaac

  589. after he

  590. got the

  591. second

  592. chance

  593. and went

  594. to that

  595. place.

  596. God

  597. did this

  598. real work

  599. of establishing

  600. Abraham

  601. in this

  602. what would

  603. become the

  604. promised

  605. land

  606. after

  607. Abraham

  608. responded

  609. to God's

  610. call

  611. the second

  612. time.

  613. Peter

  614. his greatest

  615. success

  616. came after

  617. the Lord

  618. gave him

  619. the second

  620. chance

  621. and

  622. recommissioned

  623. him.

  624. You can

  625. read about

  626. it in

  627. Acts

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  628. chapter

  629. 10

  630. God

  631. used

  632. Peter

  633. to

  634. preach

  635. the

  636. gospel

  637. in the

  638. home

  639. of a

  640. Gentile

  641. named

  642. Cornelius

  643. which was

  644. God's

  645. way of

  646. just sort

  647. of

  648. announcing

  649. the

  650. gospel

  651. is for

  652. all

  653. people

  654. not just

  655. Jews

  656. and he

  657. used

  658. Peter

  659. to do

  660. that.

  661. Later

  662. on

  663. God

  664. used

  665. Peter

  666. to write

  667. two

  668. letters

  669. to

  670. churches

  671. that

  672. are now

  673. part

  674. of our

  675. New

  676. Testament.

  677. Later

  678. on

  679. God

  680. made

  681. Mark

  682. the

  683. traveling

  684. companion

  685. of

  686. Peter

  687. and as

  688. Mark

  689. listened

  690. and wrote

  691. down

  692. what

  693. Peter

  694. was

  695. preaching

  696. Mark

  697. put

  698. that

  699. in

  700. what we

  701. call

  702. New

  703. Testament

  704. today

  705. in the

  706. form of

  707. his

  708. gospel

  709. of

  710. Mark

  711. that

  712. all

  713. happened

  714. after

  715. Peter's

  716. second

  717. chance.

  718. Here's

  719. what I

  720. want you

  721. to

  722. understand

  723. God

  724. may

  725. greatly

  726. bless

  727. your

  728. second

  729. chance

  730. effort

  731. but you

  732. won't

  733. ever know

  734. until you

  735. try

  736. and you

  737. won't

  738. ever try

  739. unless you

  740. trust

  741. God.

  742. Richard

  743. Phillips

  744. points this

  745. out in

  746. terms of

  747. our

  748. willingness

  749. to be

  750. the

  751. Lord's

  752. faithful

  753. witness.

  754. Look at

  755. what he

  756. says.

  757. Many

  758. of us

  759. do not

  760. expect to

  761. see mighty

  762. works of

  763. God

  764. looking at

  765. things as

  766. we often

  767. do from

  768. a strictly

  769. human

  770. perspective.

  771. So we

  772. do not

  773. expect to

  774. see our

  775. witness

  776. blessed

  777. with the

  778. salvation of

  779. a neighbor

  780. or a

  781. friend.

  782. I want you

  783. to think

  784. about this.

  785. Are there

  786. people in

  787. your life

  788. that you

  789. really love

  790. and care

  791. about who

  792. are not

  793. Christians?

  794. And maybe

  795. you pray

  796. for them.

  797. Maybe you

  798. pray that

  799. God would

  800. send

  801. someone

  802. to share

  803. the gospel

  804. with them

  805. and they

  806. would be

  807. saved.

  808. Maybe you

  809. even pray

  810. that God

  811. would allow

  812. you to

  813. share the

  814. gospel with

  815. them and

  816. they would

  817. be saved.

  818. Have you

  819. ever attempted

  820. to share

  821. the gospel

  822. with the

  823. expectation

  824. that God

  825. would work

  826. through you?

  827. That that

  828. person would

  829. listen and

  830. believe and

  831. you'd see

  832. them change?

  833. They'd see

  834. their life

  835. change?

  836. Why is it

  837. that we

  838. if we're

  839. Christians

  840. our faith

  841. is something

  842. supernatural?

  843. We're

  844. believing in

  845. a supernatural

  846. God, a

  847. supernatural

  848. Lord.

  849. Why can't

  850. we believe

  851. that God

  852. could use

  853. us, would

  854. use us

  855. in supernatural

  856. ways like

  857. he did

  858. Jonah?

  859. Jonah was

  860. just being

  861. obedient.

  862. Jonah was

  863. just sharing

  864. the good news

  865. that God

  866. gave him.

  867. actually, Jonah

  868. preached a

  869. message of

  870. bad news

  871. as we'll

  872. look at

  873. next week,

  874. but God

  875. even used

  876. that.

  877. We are

  878. right to

  879. think that

  880. on our

  881. own we

  882. are unable

  883. to bring

  884. meaningful life

  885. change to

  886. other people.

  887. We can't

  888. do that on

  889. our own.

  890. But we're

  891. wrong to

  892. think that

  893. God cannot

  894. use us,

  895. that God

  896. cannot work

  897. through us

  898. to make

  899. life

  900. changes

  901. in other

  902. people.

  903. You as

  904. a parent,

  905. you need

  906. to understand

  907. that God

  908. can use

  909. you to

  910. powerfully

  911. impact your

  912. children,

  913. your

  914. grandchildren,

  915. the children

  916. that you

  917. teach at

  918. school.

  919. You need

  920. to think

  921. that God

  922. can use

  923. you to

  924. powerfully

  925. influence

  926. your

  927. friends.

  928. I like

  929. the way

  930. Warren

  931. Wiersbe

  932. makes this

  933. point.

  934. He says,

  935. the will

  936. of God

  937. will never

  938. lead you

  939. where the

  940. grace of

  941. God

  942. can't

  943. keep

  944. you

  945. and the

  946. power of

  947. God

  948. can't

  949. use

  950. you.

  951. God

  952. uses

  953. people

  954. just like

  955. us.

  956. And He

  957. uses

  958. people

  959. just like

  960. us

  961. who have

  962. failed Him

  963. at first,

  964. who have

  965. failed other

  966. people at

  967. first.

  968. God is

  969. the God

  970. of the

  971. second

  972. chance.

  973. We see

  974. in verse

  975. five that

  976. Jonah was

  977. not responsible

  978. for the

  979. way people

  980. responded to

  981. the message

  982. he preached.

  983. They didn't

  984. just believe

  985. Him.

  986. They heard

  987. this as a

  988. message from

  989. God and

  990. they believed

  991. God.

  992. It says

  993. that.

  994. And the

  995. people of

  996. Nineveh

  997. believed

  998. God.

  999. I want

  1000. to ask

  1001. you right

  1002. now,

  1003. are you

  1004. willing

  1005. to be

  1006. used by

  1007. God

  1008. to make

  1009. the most

  1010. of your

  1011. second

  1012. chance?

  1013. Will you

  1014. trust God

  1015. to use

  1016. you

  1017. to make

  1018. a difference

  1019. in your

  1020. home

  1021. as a

  1022. husband,

  1023. as a

  1024. father,

  1025. as a

  1026. wife,

  1027. as a

  1028. mother?

  1029. Will you

  1030. trust God

  1031. to use

  1032. you to

  1033. make a

  1034. difference

  1035. in your

  1036. home

  1037. as a

  1038. child

  1039. who honors

  1040. your

  1041. parents,

  1042. who

  1043. obeys

  1044. your

  1045. parents?

  1046. Will you

  1047. trust God

  1048. to use

  1049. you to

  1050. make a

  1051. difference

  1052. among your

  1053. friends at

  1054. school,

  1055. or at

  1056. work,

  1057. or wherever

  1058. else God

  1059. wants to

  1060. use you?

  1061. You know,

  1062. what we see

  1063. here,

  1064. Jonah chapter

  1065. three,

  1066. verses one

  1067. through five,

  1068. the way

  1069. God used

  1070. Jonah is

  1071. supposed to

  1072. encourage each

  1073. one of us,

  1074. no matter how

  1075. strongly we

  1076. have rebelled

  1077. against God,

  1078. no matter how

  1079. far we have

  1080. run from him

  1081. and what he

  1082. wants us to

  1083. do,

  1084. no matter how

  1085. sinful we

  1086. have acted

  1087. or have

  1088. become,

  1089. if we're

  1090. still breathing,

  1091. it's not

  1092. too late for

  1093. us to

  1094. humble

  1095. ourselves

  1096. before the

  1097. Lord,

  1098. come back

  1099. to him,

  1100. confessing

  1101. our sin,

  1102. turning from

  1103. it,

  1104. and renewing

  1105. our trust

  1106. in Jesus

  1107. and commitment

  1108. to him.

  1109. And I want

  1110. you to

  1111. understand,

  1112. when God

  1113. forgives you,

  1114. he forgets.

  1115. He's not

  1116. going to

  1117. throw it

  1118. back up

  1119. in your

  1120. face.

  1121. He's not

  1122. going to

  1123. use it

  1124. against you.

  1125. And I

  1126. want you to

  1127. understand,

  1128. when God

  1129. forgives you,

  1130. he restores

  1131. you to

  1132. full fellowship

  1133. with him

  1134. as your

  1135. heavenly

  1136. father.

  1137. You don't

  1138. have to be

  1139. away from

  1140. him and

  1141. stay there.

  1142. And you

  1143. need to

  1144. understand who

  1145. you are if

  1146. you are a

  1147. Christian.

  1148. If you're

  1149. truly trusting

  1150. Jesus Christ,

  1151. and if you

  1152. have a real

  1153. relationship

  1154. with him,

  1155. you need to

  1156. understand your

  1157. sins are

  1158. forgiven.

  1159. He paid the

  1160. penalty for

  1161. them when he

  1162. died on the

  1163. cross.

  1164. His blood

  1165. cleanses us,

  1166. we can think

  1167. of.

  1168. And his

  1169. righteousness,

  1170. the perfect

  1171. life he

  1172. lived,

  1173. that is

  1174. credited to

  1175. us.

  1176. It's like

  1177. we're clothed

  1178. with his

  1179. perfect life.

  1180. Don't you

  1181. let anyone

  1182. ever tell you

  1183. that you are

  1184. disqualified from

  1185. serving God.

  1186. God, because

  1187. of your past

  1188. sin or

  1189. failure.

  1190. God

  1191. graciously

  1192. gives us

  1193. second chances,

  1194. just like he

  1195. did Jonah,

  1196. just like he

  1197. did Abraham,

  1198. just like he

  1199. did Peter,

  1200. just like he

  1201. did David,

  1202. just like he

  1203. has me and

  1204. everyone sitting

  1205. on the road

  1206. with you.

  1207. But like

  1208. Jonah, we've

  1209. got to obey

  1210. God.

  1211. God, we've

  1212. got to make

  1213. the most of

  1214. his gracious

  1215. second chance.

  1216. And that's the

  1217. question I want

  1218. you to answer

  1219. before you leave

  1220. today.

  1221. Will you make

  1222. the most of

  1223. the grace God

  1224. is showing you

  1225. right now?

  1226. God, we

  1227. do it in a

  1228. tangible way

  1229. where you

  1230. live, where

  1231. you work, the

  1232. people you're

  1233. already involved

  1234. in.

  1235. God is the

  1236. gracious God of

  1237. the second

  1238. chance.

  1239. And a part of

  1240. the grace he

  1241. gives us is the

  1242. grace to make

  1243. the most of

  1244. it.

  1245. Will you

  1246. embrace it?

  1247. Will you act

  1248. on it?

  1249. Let's pray

  1250. together.

  1251. Dear God,

  1252. help us to

  1253. see right now

  1254. what it means

  1255. for us to

  1256. make the

  1257. most of

  1258. the second

  1259. chance you've

  1260. given us.

  1261. And help us to

  1262. make that

  1263. commitment.

  1264. Lord, if there

  1265. are people in

  1266. this room who

  1267. are not

  1268. Christians,

  1269. help them to

  1270. understand that

  1271. it is by your

  1272. grace,

  1273. through faith

  1274. in Jesus,

  1275. that they can

  1276. be saved,

  1277. forgiven,

  1278. made your

  1279. child.

  1280. Help them to

  1281. do that now.

  1282. Well, Lord,

  1283. help us all

  1284. to identify

  1285. how we

  1286. need to make

  1287. the most

  1288. of your grace,

  1289. of your

  1290. forgiveness,

  1291. of your second

  1292. chances.

  1293. And help us,

  1294. Lord, to do

  1295. it.

  1296. In an attitude

  1297. of prayer,

  1298. you just do

  1299. what God's

  1300. telling you to

  1301. do.

  1302. I'd be happy

  1303. to pray for you

  1304. during this time.

  1305. I'll be here

  1306. at the front.

  1307. You just

  1308. listen to the

  1309. Lord and obey

  1310. Him.
