  1. I want you to pretend with me that when I was sitting on the end of that pew, I had one foot stuck in the aisle.

  2. And one of the ushers, as he walked by, tripped and fell flat on his face.

  3. If it had been Tyler, we'd have just laughed.

  4. Or what if I got up and I looked down and I said, I'm sorry, Tyler.

  5. Sorry.

  6. Got back in that pew and stuck my foot out again.

  7. Do you think he should take my apology seriously?

  8. No one would, would they?

  9. It's obvious.

  10. I'm not sorry if that's how I reacted.

  11. But what if he fell and I jumped up?

  12. I am so sorry, Tyler.

  13. I did not mean to do that.

  14. I didn't mean for my foot to be out there.

  15. Let me help you up.

  16. And I sit back down and I even scoop down now to make sure my foot's not out again.

  17. That ought to be believable, shouldn't it?

  18. In the tone of my voice, my response, that would be genuine sorrow, even repentance, because I'm changing my action, getting a foot out of the way.

  19. Now, let's don't pretend.

  20. Think to yourself, when I realize that I have sinned against God or another person, how do I respond?

  21. Boys and girls, when you know you've done something that God doesn't want you to do, or your parents don't want you to do,

  22. or you know you've done something to wrong somebody you go to school with, one of your classmates.

  23. And you're made to feel guilty.

  24. Either God convicts you, inflicts guilt on you, or your parent confronts you, or a teacher confronts you.

  25. What's your normal response?

  26. Do you just mouth a meaningless, I'm sorry?

  27. But you're not.

  28. And you don't intend to even change your behavior.

  29. If you're doing that, you're not fooling anybody.

  30. I want to say this to boys and girls especially.

  31. Every teacher in this room, and probably most parents who have more than one child,

  32. something's happened, and you've told one child to say to another, you're sorry.

  33. Boys and girls, if you've been there, you're the one, and you looked at them and said, sorry, you just lied.

  34. And everybody knows it.

  35. Your facial expression, your tone gave you away.

  36. You didn't mean it.

  37. Or, when you sin against God or another person,

  38. does the way you respond,

  39. your voice, your tone, your facial expression,

  40. what you do afterward,

  41. does it demonstrate true sorrow and repentance?

  42. Well, this morning we're going to look at what real repentance looks like

  43. in Jonah chapter 3.

    Jonah 3 chapter mention

  44. Turn with me if you would.

  45. Jonah chapter 3.

    Jonah 3 chapter mention

  46. If you're here for the first time in a long time,

  47. we're in a study of the book of Jonah.

  48. We're in chapter 3 today.

  49. And what we're going to see is that

  50. Jonah preached.

  51. The people of Nineveh

  52. truly believed God

  53. and repented,

  54. turned from,

  55. changed their mind and life

  56. toward their sin.

  57. This chapter

  58. provides us with a clear picture

  59. of what real repentance looks like.

  60. And

  61. I want to see as we go through this,

  62. everything that happens

  63. is a demonstration

  64. of God's grace.

  65. God's amazing grace,

  66. like I titled this message.

  67. Read with me.

  68. We're in Jonah chapter 3.

    Jonah 3 chapter mention

  69. Last week,

  70. we just looked at the first few verses

  71. with a focus on

  72. God gives us a second chance.

  73. God gives His people

  74. second and third

  75. and on and on chances

  76. when we truly

  77. confess our sin,

  78. turn from it,

  79. and seek His forgiveness.

  80. Jonah had a second chance.

  81. God called him to go to Nineveh

  82. the second time,

  83. and he went.

  84. Verse 3 tells us the message.

  85. So Jonah arose

  86. and went to Nineveh

  87. according to the word

  88. of the Lord.

  89. Now Nineveh

  90. was an exceedingly

  91. great city.

  92. Some translations

  93. would say

  94. great city to God.

  95. Three days journey

  96. in breadth.

  97. Jonah began

  98. to go into the city,

  99. going a day's journey,

  100. and he called out,

  101. yet 40 days

  102. and Nineveh

  103. shall be overthrown

  104. or destroyed.

  105. And the people of Nineveh

  106. believed God,

  107. and they called for a fast

  108. and put on sackcloth

  109. from the greatest of them

  110. to the least.

  111. The people in general

  112. responded to the preaching

  113. of God's word

  114. by believing God

  115. and demonstrating repentance.

  116. And then

  117. the king got in on it.

  118. The people responded first

  119. is what I want us to see.

  120. Verse 6.

  121. The word reached

  122. the king of Nineveh,

  123. and he arose

  124. from his throne,

  125. removed his robe,

  126. covered himself

  127. with sackcloth,

  128. and sat in ashes.

  129. In his day,

  130. he couldn't show

  131. more humility

  132. and repentance

  133. over his sin.

  134. Verse 7.

  135. And he issued

  136. a proclamation

  137. and published

  138. through Nineveh

  139. by the decree

  140. of the king

  141. and his nobles,

  142. let neither man

  143. nor beast,

  144. herd nor flock

  145. taste anything.

  146. Let them not feed

  147. or drink water,

  148. but let man

  149. and beast

  150. be covered

  151. with sackcloth

  152. and let them

  153. call out mightily

  154. to God.

  155. It was highly unusual

  156. in reading

  157. what was going on

  158. in that day and time

  159. for such public

  160. humility,

  161. sorrow,

  162. brokenness

  163. to include animals.

  164. But the king

  165. issued this decree

  166. as a way

  167. of saying to the people,

  168. we've got to let

  169. God know

  170. that we are serious.

  171. We want God

  172. to know

  173. that we are truly

  174. broken,

  175. repentant

  176. in hopes

  177. that he will not

  178. destroy us.

  179. Look back now.

  180. Verse

  181. 8.

  182. Let everyone

  183. turn from

  184. his evil way

  185. and from

  186. the violence

  187. that is in

  188. his hands.

  189. Who knows?

  190. God may

  191. turn

  192. and relent

  193. and turn

  194. from his fierce

  195. anger

  196. so that we

  197. may not perish.

  198. When God

  199. saw what they did,

  200. how they turned

  201. from their evil way,

  202. God relented

  203. of the disaster

  204. that he had said

  205. he would do

  206. to them

  207. and he did

  208. not do it.

  209. This is a

  210. chapter that tells

  211. us a lot about

  212. repentance,

  213. but it also tells

  214. us a lot about

  215. grace.

  216. Let's look at it.

  217. Number one.

  218. God graciously

  219. warns us

  220. of the final

  221. consequences

  222. of our sin.

  223. That's what

  224. he's doing

  225. in verses

  226. 3 and 4.

  227. God sent

  228. Jonah to

  229. this city

  230. to preach

  231. a message

  232. of judgment

  233. and look at it

  234. verse 4.

  235. And he called

  236. out yet

  237. 40 days

  238. and Nineveh

  239. shall be

  240. overthrown.

  241. Was this

  242. all that

  243. Jonah said?

  244. Well it

  245. doesn't say.

  246. We don't

  247. know.

  248. Is it

  249. just a

  250. summary?

  251. I think

  252. it is.

  253. I think

  254. it's just

  255. a summary

  256. of what

  257. all he

  258. preached

  259. because

  260. this phrase,

  261. this sentence

  262. doesn't mention

  263. God's name.

  264. But in

  265. verse 5

  266. we read

  267. that they

  268. believed

  269. in God.

  270. How could

  271. they believe

  272. in Jonah's

  273. God if

  274. they had

  275. not heard

  276. of him?

  277. So Jonah

  278. said more

  279. than just

  280. this one

  281. sentence,

  282. but the

  283. point is

  284. this was

  285. the essence

  286. of his

  287. message.

  288. It was

  289. a message

  290. of

  291. destruction,

  292. of judgment.

  293. Jonah

  294. told them

  295. in 40

  296. days you're

  297. going to

  298. be overthrown.

  299. The word

  300. overthrown

  301. is the same

  302. word used

  303. in other

  304. passages in

  305. the Old

  306. Testament to

  307. describe

  308. destruction.

  309. But I

  310. want you to

  311. think of

  312. this.

  313. The fact

  314. that God

  315. told them

  316. warned them

  317. 40 days

  318. in advance

  319. means that

  320. he was

  321. giving them

  322. time to

  323. repent

  324. and Jonah

  325. knew that

  326. and didn't

  327. like it.

  328. In chapter

  329. 4, which

  330. we'll look at

  331. next week,

  332. we'll start

  333. in chapter

  334. 4 next

  335. week,

  336. Jonah

  337. was mad

  338. because the

  339. people of

  340. Nineveh

  341. heard God's

  342. word and

  343. responded

  344. positively.

  345. He was

  346. mad because

  347. they repented

  348. and God

  349. relented.

  350. We'll get

  351. into that

  352. next week.

  353. What I want

  354. to point out

  355. here is that

  356. Jonah knew

  357. that his

  358. message of

  359. judgment

  360. was in

  361. effect a

  362. warning.

  363. It was

  364. God's way

  365. of being

  366. gracious.

  367. Look at

  368. what Jonah

  369. said in

  370. chapter 4

  371. verse 2.

  372. He said,

  373. I knew that

  374. you are a

  375. gracious God

  376. and merciful,

  377. slow to

  378. anger and

  379. abounding in

  380. steadfast love

  381. and relenting

  382. from disaster.

  383. And in the

  384. context,

  385. that's why

  386. he's mad.

  387. Jonah went

  388. and preached

  389. this message of

  390. destruction hoping

  391. they wouldn't

  392. believe, that they

  393. wouldn't change,

  394. they wouldn't

  395. repent.

  396. But he knew

  397. when he preached

  398. that message

  399. that it implied

  400. there's 40

  401. days left for

  402. you to repent.

  403. He knew,

  404. look at that

  405. verse,

  406. he knew that

  407. God's gracious,

  408. merciful,

  409. slow to

  410. anger and

  411. abounding in

  412. steadfast love,

  413. relenting from

  414. disaster.

  415. He knew

  416. these people

  417. may believe.

  418. They may

  419. take God's

  420. gracious

  421. offer.

  422. There's 40

  423. days and so

  424. they're going

  425. to repent.

  426. And they

  427. did.

  428. And for

  429. everybody but

  430. Jonah,

  431. that's great

  432. that God

  433. is so

  434. gracious,

  435. so merciful,

  436. so slow

  437. to anger

  438. and abounding

  439. in steadfast love.

  440. I want you

  441. to understand,

  442. if you are

  443. running from

  444. God,

  445. God,

  446. for whatever

  447. reason,

  448. you're trying

  449. to ignore

  450. Him.

  451. You're trying

  452. not to

  453. obey Him.

  454. You're trying

  455. to get out

  456. of what you

  457. know He

  458. wants you

  459. to do.

  460. If you're

  461. running from

  462. God,

  463. the fact that

  464. you are

  465. alive and

  466. hearing this

  467. message this

  468. morning means

  469. that God is

  470. showing you

  471. grace.

  472. He's showing

  473. you mercy.

  474. He's being

  475. slow to

  476. anger.

  477. But,

  478. God will

  479. not patiently

  480. wait on

  481. you to

  482. respond to

  483. Him forever.

  484. We've seen

  485. some of that

  486. in our study

  487. so far.

  488. If you're

  489. not a

  490. Christian,

  491. but you

  492. know,

  493. God has

  494. been calling

  495. you to

  496. real faith

  497. in Jesus

  498. for years

  499. maybe.

  500. But you've

  501. not responded.

  502. Maybe you

  503. are a

  504. professing

  505. Christian,

  506. even a

  507. member of

  508. this

  509. church,

  510. but you

  511. know I'm

  512. not really

  513. a Christian.

  514. I have

  515. never truly

  516. turned from

  517. my sin

  518. and trusted

  519. Christ.

  520. I'm more

  521. interested in

  522. pleasing me

  523. than pleasing

  524. God every

  525. day of the

  526. week.

  527. If you know

  528. you're not a

  529. Christian,

  530. and it may

  531. not be every

  532. week, but

  533. from time to

  534. time, maybe

  535. riding down

  536. the road,

  537. maybe in a

  538. church service,

  539. God convicts

  540. you to

  541. Jesus points

  542. out to you

  543. that you

  544. are not

  545. his child,

  546. but you

  547. could be

  548. if you'd

  549. humble

  550. yourself,

  551. turn from

  552. your sin,

  553. and trust

  554. Jesus.

  555. I want to

  556. encourage you

  557. to do that

  558. now while

  559. you have

  560. the opportunity

  561. because you

  562. may not have

  563. that opportunity

  564. much longer.

  565. If you

  566. continue to

  567. resist his

  568. call and

  569. die,

  570. not trusting

  571. Christ,

  572. you will

  573. spend

  574. eternity

  575. away from

  576. him in

  577. hell.

  578. That is

  579. the bad

  580. news of

  581. the Bible,

  582. but the

  583. good news

  584. is what

  585. you see on

  586. the screen,

  587. God is

  588. gracious,

  589. and he is

  590. patiently

  591. waiting for

  592. you to

  593. come to

  594. him right

  595. now if

  596. you're not

  597. a believer,

  598. if you are

  599. a Christian.

  600. But there's

  601. something in

  602. your life that

  603. you're just

  604. unwilling to

  605. obey God

  606. about.

  607. You're just

  608. refusing to

  609. do his

  610. will about

  611. a particular

  612. matter with

  613. a certain

  614. person maybe.

  615. I want you to

  616. understand that

  617. God will not

  618. allow you to

  619. disobey him

  620. without

  621. consequences

  622. forever.

  623. We have

  624. seen in

  625. earlier messages

  626. that God

  627. disciplines his

  628. children.

  629. God disciplined

  630. Jonah.

  631. Jonah didn't

  632. want to go do

  633. God's will.

  634. God put him

  635. in a position

  636. where doing

  637. his will

  638. was what he

  639. wanted to do

  640. rather than

  641. die.

  642. One of our

  643. church members

  644. mentioned to

  645. me after that

  646. message,

  647. say it in

  648. this service,

  649. I ran from

  650. God for years.

  651. I refused to

  652. listen to him

  653. as he called

  654. me to faith in

  655. Jesus, but God

  656. broke my back,

  657. put me in the

  658. hospital where

  659. all I could do

  660. was look up

  661. and look up I

  662. did.

  663. That's when he

  664. saved me.

  665. God has a

  666. way for us

  667. as Christians

  668. I'm talking

  669. about.

  670. God can

  671. discipline us

  672. severely if

  673. necessary.

  674. Some of you,

  675. some of us,

  676. have experienced

  677. severe discipline

  678. from a parent.

  679. They loved us so

  680. much, they took

  681. the car away for a

  682. month and put the

  683. driver's license on

  684. the mantle.

  685. Some of us, our

  686. parents loved us so

  687. much that they

  688. were willing for us

  689. to be just mad and

  690. angry and say all

  691. kinds of things, but

  692. they wouldn't give

  693. in.

  694. They wouldn't let us

  695. have our way because

  696. our way would have,

  697. if it didn't kill us,

  698. it'd hurt us.

  699. God loves us so

  700. much that he's

  701. willing to pay the

  702. price.

  703. He's willing for us

  704. to pay the price

  705. for our long-term

  706. benefit of obeying

  707. him and honoring

  708. him because he's our

  709. heavenly father and

  710. we want his will.

  711. Jonah came to the

  712. point where he

  713. wanted to preach.

  714. He didn't want these

  715. people to believe.

  716. We'll come to that

  717. next week.

  718. He didn't have the

  719. best attitude, but he

  720. had repented.

  721. He had come back to

  722. the Lord.

  723. He was showing some

  724. good signs, but not

  725. all the good signs by

  726. a long ways.

  727. We need to learn

  728. from Jonah's message

  729. that God graciously

  730. warns us of the

  731. consequences of our

  732. sin so that we will

  733. repent of it.

  734. And now I want us to

  735. look at repentance in

  736. more detail as we look

  737. at this next point.

  738. God graciously gives us

  739. opportunities to repent

  740. of our sin.

  741. What we're looking at,

  742. verses 5 through 9,

  743. how they responded.

  744. That's his whole point.

  745. He sends Jonah to

  746. preach so they will

  747. respond this way.

  748. They believed that the

  749. message Jonah preached

  750. was from God.

  751. So they took it

  752. seriously.

  753. They put their faith

  754. in him.

  755. Look at the verse in

  756. verse 5.

  757. And the people of

  758. Nineveh believed God.

  759. These people were not

  760. followers of Jonah.

  761. After he preaches,

  762. when it starts talking

  763. about him believing,

  764. Jonah passes off the

  765. scene here.

  766. We're not going to see

  767. Jonah anymore in

  768. chapter 3.

  769. It's all about the

  770. people's response to

  771. God.

  772. They immediately began

  773. to demonstrate that they

  774. meant business by

  775. publicly humbling

  776. themselves like they

  777. did.

  778. Look at the last part of

  779. verse 5.

  780. They called for a fast

  781. and put on sackcloth.

  782. God was obviously at

  783. work.

  784. This was not something

  785. they just decided to do

  786. on their own.

  787. God was doing a

  788. miraculous work of

  789. grace, opening their

  790. eyes to see the truth

  791. and want to respond

  792. because everyone did.

  793. Look at the last part

  794. of verse 5.

  795. From the greatest of

  796. them to the least of

  797. them.

  798. Even the king got in

  799. on this.

  800. He followed the

  801. people's example.

  802. They did this first.

  803. That's important to

  804. note.

  805. But look in verse 6.

  806. The word reached the

  807. king of Nineveh and he

  808. arose from his throne,

  809. removed his robe,

  810. covered himself with

  811. sackcloth,

  812. sat in ashes.

  813. These people truly

  814. believed God's word of

  815. warning and they

  816. responded by doing

  817. what they knew to do

  818. as signs of humility,

  819. brokenness, and

  820. repentance.

  821. Let's look at this

  822. picture of real

  823. repentance now.

  824. I want to begin by

  825. defining it.

  826. J.I.

  827. Packer gives us a real

  828. concise definition.

  829. Repentance is a change

  830. of mind, issuing a change

  831. of life.

  832. You may have heard it

  833. spoken a little bit

  834. differently.

  835. Repentance is a change

  836. of mind or heart

  837. resulting in a change

  838. of life.

  839. Wayne Grudem expands

  840. this.

  841. He includes a lot of the

  842. aspects of repentance.

  843. Look at this.

  844. Repentance is heartfelt

  845. sorrow for sin, a

  846. renouncing of it, and a

  847. sincere commitment to

  848. forsake it and live in

  849. obedience to Christ.

  850. What we're looking at is

  851. how these people

  852. repented of their sin

  853. against God.

  854. That's the primary

  855. application.

  856. We need to think about

  857. do we truly, when we're

  858. convicted of our sin,

  859. repent?

  860. But I want you to apply

  861. this in personal

  862. relationships.

  863. When you and your

  864. spouse, one of your

  865. family members, one of

  866. your friends, one of

  867. your enemies, when you

  868. truly have conflict and

  869. you feel guilty, you get

  870. convicted that you've

  871. been wrong, do you show

  872. genuine repentance?

  873. Keep that in mind as we go

  874. through this.

  875. The people of Nineveh

  876. demonstrated what repentance

  877. looks like.

  878. I want us to look at three

  879. things.

  880. Number one, when we

  881. repent, we will feel

  882. genuine sorrow over our

  883. sin.

  884. They called for a fast and

  885. put on sackcloth.

  886. In the ancient world, that

  887. was their way.

  888. It was a known way for

  889. expressing humility, sorrow.

  890. It was just the way.

  891. When we truly repent, we

  892. will be genuinely sorry that

  893. we have sinned against God

  894. or another person.

  895. And we will show it in our

  896. own way in the way that we

  897. act toward the person.

  898. And the way we act toward

  899. the person, I'm talking

  900. about the way you look at

  901. them, the way you express

  902. yourself, words, tone, body

  903. language, and then what you

  904. do, how you respond going

  905. forward.

  906. There's a lot of

  907. difference between genuine

  908. heartfelt sorrow over sin and

  909. genuine sorrow that you got

  910. caught and had to pay the

  911. consequences.

  912. If I get stopped for speeding

  913. going home today and I get a

  914. ticket, I will be sorry that I

  915. got caught, that I've got to

  916. pay a fine.

  917. And if they turn it in on my

  918. insurance and it goes up for

  919. three years, I'm going to be

  920. real sorry that I sped going

  921. down Highway 8 on the way home

  922. today.

  923. I hope there's no city policeman

  924. or highway patrolman in this

  925. room.

  926. But I'm going to let you in on a

  927. secret.

  928. I like to drive fast.

  929. And if I get caught, I'm going

  930. to be sorry I got caught and

  931. got fined as my insurance goes

  932. up.

  933. But I'm going to be real

  934. honest.

  935. I'm not going to be sorry I

  936. drove fast.

  937. I like to.

  938. And if I can get by with it, I

  939. will.

  940. I don't just fly and do bad

  941. things.

  942. I don't drive through

  943. neighborhoods like a wild man.

  944. But I figure on a four-lane road,

  945. just take your chance.

  946. I don't go 100 miles an hour,

  947. except sometimes on the

  948. interstate, but not around here.

  949. You see what I'm saying?

  950. We can truly be sorry, feel

  951. terrible, guilty for consequences

  952. that we suffer from our sin.

  953. Boys and girls, there's no doubt

  954. you are sorry when you are

  955. disrespectful to your parent or

  956. teacher and you get grounded at

  957. home, stay in for recess.

  958. You're sorry for sure.

  959. But are you repentant?

  960. Is there a real heartfelt sorrow

  961. that leads to the next point?

  962. We will turn from our sin.

  963. Look what they did.

  964. The king issued this decree.

  965. He says, let everyone turn from

  966. his evil way and from the violence

  967. that is in his hands.

  968. I pointed out in one of the first

  969. couple of messages that Nineveh is

  970. a very important city in Assyria.

  971. And the Assyrians were notorious for

  972. their brutality.

  973. One of the ancient world's most evil,

  974. ruthless empires.

  975. They were known to sometimes skin people

  976. alive.

  977. Cut off an enemy's head, stick it on a

  978. pole and make a family member of that

  979. person carry it around, parade it around.

  980. Well, the king demonstrates repentance

  981. by calling for these people to turn from

  982. their evil and the violence that is in

  983. their hands.

  984. When God convicts us of sin,

  985. we will stop our sinful behavior.

  986. We will have a desire to turn away from it

  987. and we will put forth the effort to turn away

  988. from it.

  989. For example, if you've been lying,

  990. you've been convicted of your sin of lying,

  991. you will stop lying.

  992. That's how you'll show repentance.

  993. If you've been disrespectful to your parents,

  994. you'll stop being disrespectful to your parents.

  995. If you've been talking about people,

  996. you're just a gossip, a slanderer.

  997. And you really get convicted about it,

  998. you'll close your mouth.

  999. And you won't do that anymore.

1000. Now, some things are more difficult to stop than

  1001. others.

1002. And I want to point this out for a moment.

1003. I know some people who have struggled with alcohol

1004. and drug abuse for years.

1005. And if they ever become repentant and want to stop,

1006. they're most likely going to need help.

1007. Certainly they need God's help.

1008. They're going to need other people's help,

  1009. family members, friends.

1010. They may need professional help.

1011. They may need the help of a professional,

  1012. of a medical doctor,

  1013. a professional counselor,

  1014. psychological, spiritual.

1015. If God is convicting you of your sin,

  1016. whatever it is,

1017. it's important that you express

  1018. heartfelt sorrow.

1019. And then you've got to ask God to help you

1020. to stop the sinful behavior.

1021. You change your mind about it.

  1022. You turn from it.

1023. And if you need help,

  1024. you seek help.

  1025. You just say,

  1026. I can't help it.

  1027. You seek guidance,

  1028. help,

  1029. correction in some way.

1030. If you're on the receiving end of somebody

1031. coming to you and expressing sorrow for something,

1032. and it appears they truly are repentant,

1033. but next week or next month,

  1034. they fail you again,

1035. don't give up on them.

  1036. None of us,

  1037. none of us,

  1038. when we truly repent,

1039. we don't walk away from it

  1040. and never go back.

  1041. We fail.

1042. We struggle as sinful human beings,

  1043. even as Christians.

1044. And just as God gives you

  1045. second and third

  1046. and 20th and 50th chance,

1047. you've got to give people

  1048. other chances.

1049. It can't just be one and done.

1050. You don't want God to do you that way.

1051. You can't do people that way.

1052. But let's not take advantage of this.

  1053. I cannot,

  1054. if it's my problem,

1055. I cannot go to somebody and say,

  1056. hey,

1057. you've got to be patient with me.

  1058. I'm just a sinful person

1059. and I'm going to fail you all the time.

1060. You don't mean it if that's what you say.

  1061. That's an excuse.

  1062. We are that way,

1063. but we can't accept that in ourselves.

  1064. We work on it.

  1065. We continuously,

  1066. Martin Luther,

  1067. the reformer,

  1068. said the Christian life

1069. is a life of repentance

  1070. before God,

1071. before others that we wrong.

  1072. There's one more part

  1073. of real repentance here.

1074. We must turn to God in faith.

1075. We've already seen that in verse five.

1076. The people of Nineveh believed God.

1077. But then in verse eight,

  1078. the king again said,

1079. let them call out mightily to God.

1080. Repentance is a turning from sin

1081. and turning to God in faith,

  1082. or if you're a Christian,

  1083. in renewed faith,

1084. if you're coming back to him.

  1085. The Christian life

1086. is more than a life of do's and don'ts.

  1087. Far more.

  1088. It's all about a relationship

  1089. and fellowship

  1090. with our heavenly father

  1091. and the Lord Jesus.

1092. Our sin hinders our fellowship

1093. with our father and our Lord.

1094. It doesn't destroy the relationship,

1095. but it does hinder close fellowship.

1096. And we ought to all be able

  1097. to understand that.

  1098. Sin hinders fellowship

  1099. in every relationship.

1100. When children disobey their parents,

  1101. it hurts the fellowship.

  1102. When children disobey,

  1103. parents have to punish,

  1104. discipline.

1105. There may not be a whole lot

  1106. of touchy-feely,

  1107. lovey-dovey things said.

  1108. Same thing true

  1109. with husbands and wives.

  1110. Sometimes these things

  1111. hinder our fellowship,

  1112. but they don't destroy

  1113. our relationship.

  1114. Well, repentance

1115. is the key to restoring fellowship

1116. in just about every relationship

  1117. in life.

1118. It's important that we learn

  1119. to express sorrow,

  1120. that we stop it,

  1121. we change,

  1122. we turn,

1123. that we come back to God

1124. if our issue is with him,

1125. or that we come back

  1126. into a right relationship

  1127. with another person

1128. if the other person is involved.

  1129. If you're not experiencing

  1130. close fellowship

  1131. with God right now,

1132. and you know it's because

  1133. of a certain issue

  1134. in your life

1135. that you won't obey him about,

1136. I want to encourage you,

  1137. if you want things

1138. to be ready with God,

  1139. right with God,

  1140. repent now.

  1141. Express genuine sorrow

  1142. to him,

  1143. and turn from it.

1144. Change your mind about it.

  1145. Turn to him

  1146. in renewed faith,

  1147. love,

  1148. commitment.

  1149. That's what it means

  1150. to repent.

  1151. There's one more thing

  1152. in this passage,

  1153. one more aspect

  1154. of God's grace.

1155. Let's look at it real quick.

  1156. Verse 10,

  1157. God graciously withholds judgment

  1158. and forgives us

1159. when we repent of our sins.

  1160. Look at the verse.

1161. When God saw what they did,

  1162. how they turned

  1163. from their evil way,

  1164. God relented

  1165. of the disaster

  1166. that he had said

1167. he would do to them,

1168. and he did not do it.

  1169. God demonstrated

  1170. his grace.

  1171. He withheld judgment

  1172. from these people

  1173. because they truly repented.

1174. This is how God desires

1175. to work in everybody's life.

1176. I want you to look

  1177. at this word

  1178. from Jeremiah chapter 18.

    Jeremiah 18 chapter mention

  1179. God says,

  1180. if at any time

  1181. I announce

  1182. that a nation

  1183. or kingdom

  1184. is to be uprooted,

  1185. torn down,

  1186. and destroyed,

  1187. and if that nation

  1188. I warned

  1189. repents of its evil,

  1190. then I will relent

  1191. and not inflict

  1192. on it

  1193. the disaster

  1194. I had planned.

  1195. Going back

  1196. to what Jonah says

  1197. in chapter 4,

  1198. God

  1199. is

  1200. and desires

  1201. to show us

  1202. grace

  1203. and mercy,

  1204. but God

  1205. is also

  1206. holy

  1207. and just,

  1208. and God

  1209. cannot

  1210. and will not

  1211. overlook

  1212. our sin.

  1213. He must,

  1214. to be true

  1215. to who He is,

  1216. He must

  1217. punish it.

  1218. Well,

  1219. God has graciously

  1220. provided a way

  1221. for our sin

  1222. to be punished

  1223. and Him still

  1224. remain just.

  1225. What He did

  1226. is He sent

  1227. His perfect

  1228. Son,

  1229. the Lord Jesus,

  1230. into this world

  1231. to take

  1232. our punishment

  1233. by dying

  1234. on the cross

  1235. for our sins.

  1236. That satisfied

  1237. God's justice

  1238. Jesus paid

  1239. the penalty

  1240. for sin.

  1241. It's not

  1242. overlooked.

  1243. Now God

  1244. graciously offers

  1245. to forgive us

  1246. and make us

  1247. His children

  1248. if we'll repent

  1249. of our sins

  1250. and put our

  1251. trust in Jesus

  1252. because when we

  1253. trust Jesus,

  1254. we're one with Him

  1255. and the penalty

  1256. for our sin

  1257. has been paid.

  1258. We have His

  1259. righteous character

  1260. credited to us.

  1261. Have you come

  1262. to the place

  1263. in your life

  1264. where you know

  1265. that you're

  1266. a child of God,

  1267. that Jesus Christ

1268. is Lord of your life?

  1269. If you know

  1270. He's not,

  1271. I want to encourage

  1272. you to put your

  1273. trust in Him now

  1274. while you have

  1275. the opportunity.

  1276. If you're a child

  1277. of God

  1278. away from Him,

  1279. you're not close

  1280. with Him now

  1281. and it's because

  1282. of your sinful

  1283. attitude,

  1284. your sinful

  1285. behavior,

  1286. come to Him

  1287. now.

  1288. Truly

  1289. repent.

  1290. Renew your

  1291. faith in Jesus.

  1292. Draw near

  1293. to God

  1294. now.

  1295. The Scripture

  1296. says if we draw

  1297. near to God,

  1298. He will draw

  1299. near to us.

  1300. Let's pray

  1301. together.

  1302. Dear God,

  1303. show us now

  1304. how we should

  1305. respond.

  1306. Lord,

  1307. help us all

  1308. to understand

  1309. that this is

  1310. a message

  1311. for Your

  1312. people.

  1313. Repentance

  1314. is to be a

  1315. part of our

  1316. lives and our

  1317. relationship with

  1318. You and our

  1319. relationship with

  1320. other people.

  1321. Father,

  1322. help us to let

  1323. it sink in

  1324. what it truly

  1325. means to be

  1326. repentant.

  1327. Help us,

  1328. Father,

  1329. to be honest

  1330. about if

  1331. that's true

  1332. about us

  1333. as we seek

  1334. Your forgiveness,

  1335. as we admit

  1336. our sin,

  1337. as we seek to

  1338. be reconciled

  1339. with other

  1340. people.

  1341. Let's just

  1342. in an

  1343. attitude of

  1344. prayer respond

  1345. to the Lord

  1346. about this.

  1347. Maybe repent

  1348. for the first

  1349. time in your

  1350. life or maybe

  1351. for the first

  1352. time in a

  1353. long time.

  1354. and maybe

  1355. make the

  1356. commitment that

  1357. when you get

  1358. home, you're

  1359. going to express

  1360. genuine repentance

  1361. to a person that

  1362. needs to hear it

  1363. and see it in

  1364. you.

  1365. If I could pray

  1366. with you this

  1367. time, I'd be

  1368. happy to do

  1369. here.

  1370. Let's just

  1371. pray.

  1372. Let's pray.
