  1. If a new Christian came up to you here at church or at work,

  2. knowing that you're a professing Christian,

  3. you attend this church, and they told you,

  4. I have just become a Christian, I know I'm supposed to give.

  5. What do I do?

  6. Could you explain to me what you give, how you give,

  7. how much you give?

  8. I don't know anything about it.

  9. What would you tell them?

  10. As we continue our study on faithful stewardship,

  11. this morning I want us to conclude the part about the faithful stewardship of our money.

  12. Some of you I know are going to say, oh, I'm so glad he's through with that.

  13. But as we continue talking about being wise managers of our time,

  14. our talents, our treasures,

  15. we're going to wind it up today, the part about giving,

  16. or the part about being a stewardship of our money,

  17. by looking at our giving.

  18. What would you say to someone who asks you,

  19. what do I give, how do I give, why do I give?

  20. What I want us to do is do a brief survey of some of the major teachings in the Old Testament and the New Testament

  21. about giving,

  22. and then put it together into what the Bible actually means for us today about giving.

  23. Let's do first giving in the Old Testament.

  24. We looked briefly last week and saw that giving to God should be our first priority.

  25. This is called first fruit giving.

  26. Proverbs describes this kind of giving as honoring God.

  27. Look at it.

  28. Honor the Lord with your wealth and with your first fruits of all your produce.

  29. But what you want us to notice is that first phrase, honor the Lord.

  30. The idea of first fruit giving is honoring God, is focused on Him.

  31. We also saw last week that such giving demonstrates trust in God.

  32. For those people giving the Lord the first fruits of their produce, their crops,

  33. they were saying, we're giving God the first,

  34. and we're going to trust Him to provide us with the rest that will meet our needs.

  35. Well, the same thing is true about us.

  36. When we give Him the first of our income,

  37. we're trusting Him.

  38. And we're saying to Him that we're trusting Him to meet our needs with the rest of our income.

  39. Paul encouraged Christians throughout his travels and in several of his letters

  40. to give generously and willingly because God can be trusted to supply us with what we need.

  41. In fact, God supplies us with what we need to give, to save, to invest, and to spend.

  42. By the way, I was so surprised I've got more feedback from last week's message

  43. about on the part about saving and investing than anything else.

  44. In fact, I had some people talk about that really got to them.

  45. Well, I want to just reemphasize this morning.

  46. A part of being a good steward, it's not just giving.

  47. It's earning.

  48. It's giving.

  49. But it is saving and investing wisely as well as spending.

  50. But what I want us to note here in 2 Corinthians 9,

  51. Paul encourages them to trust God.

  52. Look at it.

  53. And God is able to bless you abundantly

  54. so that in all things, at all times,

  55. having all that you need,

  56. you will abound in every good work.

  57. Our first giving priority should be that we give to God.

  58. Don't think about giving to a church.

  59. Don't think about giving to a cause.

  60. As Christians, we need to think of our giving first and foremost

  61. as giving to God to honor Him,

  62. to thank Him,

  63. and to demonstrate to Him we trust You, Lord.

  64. We're going to give the first of our income to You

  65. because we have confidence

  66. that You'll supply us with what we need for everything else.

  67. Well, the major emphasis in the Old Testament on giving

  68. is not the first fruit giving,

  69. but it's on the giving of a tithe or 10% to God.

  70. The first Old Testament records of giving a tithe

  71. was not under the law, not a requirement.

  72. The first time we see tithing mentioned in the Old Testament,

  73. in the book of Genesis,

  74. it was given as a voluntary, spontaneous expression

  75. of worship or gratitude or commitment.

  76. Abraham, who was first known in the Old Testament as Abram,

  77. God's the one who changed His name to Abraham.

  78. On one occasion, He gave a tithe of all He had won in a battle.

  79. He gave a tithe of the spoils of war

  80. to a mysterious figure in the Bible,

  81. Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God, he's described.

  82. It says in Genesis 14, verse 20, just simply,

    Genesis 14:20

  83. and Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

  84. But I want you to look next at the book of Hebrews.

  85. It affirms that this was an act of worship.

  86. Note, this Melchizedek was king of Salem

  87. and priest of God Most High.

  88. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings

  89. and blessed him,

  90. and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything.

  91. In response to that,

  92. God is an expression of worship given to the priest of God.

  93. Next, Jacob, Abraham's grandson,

  94. promised to give a tithe of all that God had given him

  95. in response to God's promise to bless him.

  96. God promised to bless Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,

  97. and their descendants in a very special way,

  98. and ultimately, we're reading the New Testament,

  99. that was through Jesus.

  100. But I want you to note how Jacob responded to God

  101. by saying,

  102. and all that you give me,

  103. I will give a full tenth to you.

  104. That promise of a tithe

  105. was an expression of his commitment to God

  106. because of God's promise to bless him.

  107. These two examples show us

  108. that tithing first appears in the Bible

  109. as a volunteering.

  110. From the heart,

  111. expression of worship,

  112. of gratitude,

  113. of commitment.

  114. That's how it begins.

  115. But tithing appears next in the Bible

  116. as a required giving under the law.

  117. And that's what the majority of things

  118. you read about the tithe in the Old Testament

  119. is all about.

  120. Required, mandated giving

  121. by the people of Israel

  122. living under the law

  123. in the promised land.

  124. Three passages explain this.

  125. I want you to look on the screen,

  126. and I want to encourage you

  127. to write that down

  128. and look at those.

  129. There's a lot of verses represented there.

  130. Leviticus 27, 30 through 33.

  131. Numbers 18, 21 through 32.

  132. Deuteronomy 14, verses 22 through 29.

    Deuteronomy 14:22–29

  133. If you read that,

  134. you may be a little bit confused.

  135. Old Testament scholars debate

  136. how many tithes

  137. are actually being required

  138. in those verses.

  139. Some think there was one yearly tithe,

  140. and then a second one

  141. was required every three years.

  142. Some think there were two yearly tithes,

  143. and then a third one

  144. required every year,

  145. every three years.

  146. Well, when you read those passages,

  147. it's obvious

  148. the people of Israel

  149. were required to give more

  150. than a tenth of their income

  151. every year to God.

  152. It was a requirement

  153. under the law.

  154. Now, let's move on

  155. to the New Testament.

  156. The New Testament does not teach

  157. that Christians must give

  158. a certain percentage

  159. of their income to God.

  160. The New Testament does teach

  161. that Christians should give,

  162. but it doesn't say how much.

  163. It doesn't talk about a percentage.

  164. Most of what you read

  165. in the New Testament about giving

  166. is focused on principles.

  167. Or what we might even say,

  168. our attitude in giving.

  169. I want you to look at some examples.

  170. The New Testament says

  171. that our giving should be willful

  172. or voluntary giving.

  173. We looked at this verse last week,

  174. but let me just remind you.

  175. Each one must give

  176. as he has decided in his heart,

  177. not reluctantly

  178. or under compulsion.

  179. And the second attitude

  180. about giving should be cheerful giving.

  181. And here's the rest of that verse.

  182. For God loves a cheerful giver.

  183. Everyone must give,

  184. but you decide.

  185. You choose how much.

  186. And whatever you give,

  187. do it cheerfully.

  188. Number three,

  189. regular giving is what

  190. the New Testament calls for.

  191. On the first day of every week,

  192. each of you is to put something aside

  193. and store it up.

  194. Our giving should be

  195. on a regular basis.

  196. The fourth principle,

  197. proportionate giving.

  198. Each of you is to put something aside

  199. and store it up

  200. as he may prosper.

  201. Everybody's not supposed

  202. to give the same.

  203. Everybody doesn't prosper

  204. the same way.

  205. Some people are very blessed.

  206. They're very prosperous.

  207. Their giving should reflect that.

  208. Some people just

  209. are not that prosperous.

  210. Fact is,

  211. the reality of life

  212. and their giving

  213. will reflect that.

  214. The fifth attitude

  215. or principle of giving

  216. in the New Testament

  217. is generous giving.

  218. For they gave

  219. according to their means,

  220. as I can testify,

  221. and beyond their means

  222. of their own accord.

  223. There again,

  224. of their own accord

  225. emphasizes

  226. that Christian giving

  227. in the New Testament

  228. was something

  229. that they voluntarily

  230. chose to do.

  231. Even when they sacrificially

  232. gave beyond their means.

  233. Now,

  234. before we start looking

  235. at the amount

  236. we should give,

  237. we need to make sure

  238. that our attitude

  239. toward whatever we give

  240. is the right attitude.

  241. So let's think.

  242. As you think about

  243. giving to God,

  244. and let's be specific,

  245. through this church,

  246. what goes through your mind?

  247. How do you think

  248. of your personal giving?

  249. When you write your check

  250. or give online

  251. or put cash

  252. in the offering plate,

  253. what goes through your mind?

  254. How do you feel?

  255. How would you describe

  256. your attitude

  257. about your giving

  258. to God

  259. through this church?

  260. and then let's just look

  261. at what the New Testament said.

  262. Do the words

  263. willful,

  264. voluntary,

  265. cheerful,

  266. regular,

  267. proportionate,

  268. and generous,

  269. do those words

  270. describe

  271. the attitude

  272. you have

  273. as you give?

  274. Do those words

  275. describe your

  276. habit,

  277. your actions

  278. about giving?

  279. In light of what we see

  280. in this brief survey

  281. of biblical giving,

  282. we need to think about

  283. what should we give

  284. to God today

  285. as Christians,

  286. believers of the Bible?

  287. How should we think

  288. in terms of giving today?

  289. Well, the first thing

  290. we need to understand

  291. about giving today

  292. is that

  293. we do not live

  294. under the Old Testament

  295. law of Moses,

  296. including

  297. the law's requirement

  298. to tithe.

  299. Jesus Christ

  300. has fulfilled

  301. the law.

  302. Jesus

  303. has fulfilled

  304. the law

  305. and set us free

  306. from the law's

  307. requirements.

  308. Now this is stated

  309. here and there

  310. throughout the New Testament.

  311. A statement here,

  312. an example there.

  313. It is explained

  314. in some detail

  315. in the book

  316. of Galatians.

  317. It is explained

  318. fully

  319. in the book

  320. of Hebrews.

  321. If you want

  322. to know,

  323. get a handle

  324. on,

  325. why do we not,

  326. why are we not

  327. obligated today

  328. to live under

  329. the Old Testament

  330. law of Moses,

  331. first five books

  332. of the Old Testament,

  333. like the people

  334. in Israel were

  335. living in the

  336. promised land?

  337. Read the book

  338. of Hebrews.

  339. It explains that.

  340. And Hebrews

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  341. chapters 8,

  342. 9,

  343. and 10

  344. will give you

  345. the most detail

  346. on why we

  347. as Christians

  348. today

  349. are no longer

  350. under

  351. the Old Testament

  352. law.

  353. In a nutshell,

  354. this is what

  355. Hebrews is telling us.

  356. Jesus fully

  357. kept the law

  358. of God

  359. for us.

  360. Jesus perfectly

  361. kept,

  362. obeyed,

  363. fulfilled the

  364. requirements

  365. of the law.

  366. And when we

  367. trust Him

  368. as our Savior

  369. and Lord,

  370. we're one

  371. with Him.

  372. God looks

  373. at us

  374. united to Christ

  375. and the requirements

  376. of the law

  377. have been fulfilled.

  378. We receive

  379. the righteousness,

  380. the perfect life

  381. credited to us

  382. of Jesus.

  383. Jesus also

  384. died on the cross

  385. to pay the penalty

  386. for our sins

  387. of disobeying

  388. God's law.

  389. And so when we're

  390. united to Jesus

  391. by faith

  392. as Christians,

  393. God looks at us,

  394. we are lawbreakers.

  395. We've sinned

  396. and come short

  397. of the glory of God.

  398. But when God

  399. looks at us

  400. united to Jesus

  401. by faith,

  402. the penalty

  403. for our sin

  404. has been paid.

  405. What Jesus

  406. did for us

  407. through His life

  408. and death

  409. is what saves us

  410. and frees us

  411. from the

  412. penalty of the law.

  413. We put our faith

  414. and trust in Jesus

  415. as our Lord

  416. and Savior.

  417. We are forgiven

  418. and made right

  419. with God

  420. right then

  421. and there.

  422. Our salvation

  423. is by God's grace.

  424. It is totally

  425. undeserved

  426. through faith

  427. in Jesus

  428. and what He

  429. has done

  430. to make us

  431. right with God.

  432. That's why

  433. we don't bring

  434. animal sacrifices

  435. to a temple

  436. on a regular basis

  437. to offer atonement

  438. for our sins

  439. like the people

  440. in Israel did.

  441. That's why

  442. thank the Lord

  443. we don't have

  444. to abstain

  445. from barbecued pork

  446. and ribs

  447. and bacon.

  448. Now if you don't

  449. agree with what I said

  450. you better not

  451. be eating any bacon

  452. or barbecue.

  453. We've been set free

  454. from those dietary

  455. regulations.

  456. There is no

  457. unclean food.

  458. There's a lot of food

  459. we probably shouldn't

  460. eat

  461. but not from

  462. a biblical perspective.

  463. It's what Jesus

  464. has done

  465. for us

  466. on the cross

  467. that we're not

  468. required to keep

  469. Sabbath laws.

  470. You say

  471. well I do.

  472. Well

  473. you don't worship

  474. on the Sabbath

  475. if you come here

  476. on Sunday

  477. Sabbath is the

  478. seventh day.

  479. Saturday.

  480. So you're not

  481. keeping Sabbath laws.

  482. No one is.

  483. Well how should

  484. we think of the

  485. Old Testament

  486. today?

  487. Just forget it?

  488. Rip it out of the Bible?

  489. Absolutely not.

  490. What we read

  491. in the Old Testament

  492. is still the Word

  493. of God

  494. that provides us

  495. with listen

  496. eternal principles

  497. for living a life

  498. that pleases God.

  499. For example

  500. all of the

  501. Ten Commandments

  502. are restated

  503. reinforced

  504. in the New Testament

  505. except the

  506. Fourth Commandment

  507. concerning the

  508. Sabbath.

  509. We don't live

  510. under the Old

  511. Testament law

  512. of Moses

  513. but we do

  514. live under

  515. the principles

  516. contained in

  517. the law.

  518. For example

  519. lying and

  520. stealing is

  521. always wrong.

  522. Honoring your

  523. father and

  524. mother is

  525. always right.

  526. It's just in

  527. the nature of

  528. God for

  529. lying and

  530. stealing to

  531. be wrong.

  532. It's contrary

  533. to who he is.

  534. Honoring your

  535. father and mother

  536. is just how God

  537. created life to

  538. be in this world

  539. between children

  540. and parents of

  541. all ages.

  542. You honor your

  543. father and mother.

  544. Worshiping God

  545. only.

  546. Having no other

  547. gods.

  548. Never taking his

  549. name in vain.

  550. Those are eternal

  551. principles that tell

  552. us how to honor

  553. God.

  554. You can't honor

  555. God and serve

  556. idols or other

  557. gods.

  558. You can't take

  559. God's name in

  560. vain and that

  561. doesn't mean you

  562. just don't use his

  563. name in profane

  564. statements.

  565. That means you

  566. don't take God's

  567. name flippantly or

  568. casually.

  569. If you don't use

  570. God's name be

  571. talking about him

  572. seriously,

  573. honestly,

  574. not flippantly or

  575. casually.

  576. So what about

  577. tithing?

  578. Is that a

  579. principle?

  580. A principle that

  581. endures or is it a

  582. law we no longer

  583. have to keep?

  584. Let's think about

  585. it.

  586. Tithing appears in

  587. the Bible before

  588. the law ever

  589. existed.

  590. Voluntarily giving

  591. a tithe to God is

  592. one of the oldest

  593. tangible expressions

  594. of worship showing

  595. gratitude and

  596. commitment found

  597. among God's

  598. people.

  599. Here's something

  600. else we need to

  601. think about in

  602. relation to the law

  603. and today and

  604. principles and so

  605. forth.

  606. Jesus never

  607. lowered the

  608. standards of

  609. truth found in

  610. those Old

  611. Testament laws.

  612. He actually

  613. raised the bar.

  614. Jesus raised the

  615. standards of truth

  616. for an example.

  617. Jesus taught that

  618. murder is more

  619. than just taking

  620. someone's life.

  621. Murder actually

  622. begins with anger

  623. in our heart.

  624. Insults,

  625. condemnations,

  626. judgments on our

  627. tongue.

  628. Look at what

  629. Jesus said in the

  630. Sermon on the

  631. Mount, Matthew 5.

  632. He says,

  633. You have heard that

  634. it was said to

  635. those of old,

  636. you shall not

  637. murder.

  638. And whoever

  639. murders will be

  640. liable to

  641. judgment.

  642. But I say to

  643. you that everyone

  644. who is angry with

  645. his brother will be

  646. liable to judgment.

  647. And whoever insults

  648. his brother will be

  649. liable to the

  650. counsel.

  651. And whoever says

  652. you fool will be

  653. liable to the hell

  654. of fire.

  655. Jesus said that

  656. adultery is much

  657. more than a

  658. physical act.

  659. The sin of

  660. adultery begins

  661. with a lustful

  662. look and desire.

  663. Note again,

  664. Sermon on the

  665. Mount, Matthew 5.

  666. Jesus said,

  667. You have heard that

  668. it was said,

  669. You shall not

  670. commit adultery.

  671. But I say to you

  672. that everyone who

  673. looks at a woman

  674. with lustful intent

  675. has already committed

  676. adultery with her

  677. in his heart.

  678. And each of those

  679. examples,

  680. Jesus is bringing

  681. out the spirit

  682. of the law,

  683. not just the letter.

  684. And in doing that,

  685. Jesus did not lower

  686. the moral requirements

  687. of the Old Testament

  688. laws.

  689. He raised them,

  690. didn't He?

  691. It's obvious.

  692. So now we come

  693. to tithing.

  694. Tithing appears

  695. to be a solid,

  696. biblical,

  697. very sound

  698. principle

  699. for Christians

  700. today

  701. that gives us

  702. a starting

  703. point

  704. in our giving

  705. to God.

  706. That seems

  707. to be the most

  708. common understanding

  709. of tithing

  710. among Christian

  711. leaders

  712. who take the

  713. Bible's

  714. teaching

  715. seriously.

  716. I want you to

  717. look at an example

  718. from James

  719. Boyce,

  720. long-time pastor,

  721. 10th Presbyterian Church

  722. in Philadelphia,

  723. on the radio

  724. for years,

  725. highly respected.

  726. He says,

  727. although the tithe

  728. is not mentioned,

  729. the giving of

  730. weekly offerings

  731. is,

  732. he's talking about

  733. in the New Testament.

  734. And more importantly,

  735. it is generally

  736. the case

  737. in the New Testament,

  738. the obligations

  739. of the Old Testament

  740. legislation

  741. are heightened

  742. rather than

  743. lessened.

  744. Jesus in murder,

  745. Jesus in adultery.

  746. So while we are

  747. not required

  748. to give a specific

  749. tenth of our income,

  750. it is hard to think

  751. of a normal Christian

  752. blessed with the

  753. fullness of the

  754. gospel of Jesus Christ

  755. doing less.

  756. Under reasonable

  757. circumstances,

  758. any true believer

  759. in Christ

  760. should give more

  761. than the tenth.

  762. For all we have

  763. is the Lord's.

  764. Randy Alcorn,

  765. some of you

  766. have read his book

  767. on heaven,

  768. done a study

  769. here in church

  770. on heaven

  771. based on his book.

  772. He's written a lot

  773. of things about giving.

  774. One of his books

  775. was called

  776. The Treasure Principle

  777. and in that book

  778. he compares tithing

  779. to training wheels

  780. on a bicycle.

  781. He says,

  782. training wheels

  783. help you to learn

  784. to ride,

  785. but once you learn

  786. to ride,

  787. you take off

  788. the training wheels.

  789. He says that

  790. when we really

  791. learn to give,

  792. tithing won't

  793. even be an issue.

  794. It will be merely

  795. the beginning point

  796. of our giving.

  797. One more,

  798. Wayne Grudem.

  799. My conclusion

  800. about how much

  801. we should give

  802. is that the New Testament

  803. does not specify

  804. any certain amount

  805. such as 10%.

  806. But a tithe

  807. certainly seems

  808. like a wise guideline

  809. at least when someone

  810. is beginning

  811. beginning

  812. to give

  813. to the Lord's work.

  814. It is a level

  815. of giving

  816. that is significant

  817. and yet not

  818. excessively

  819. burdensome

  820. for people.

  821. I want us

  822. to understand

  823. that the key

  824. to practicing

  825. faithful stewardship

  826. of everything

  827. we have,

  828. everything that we are,

  829. including our money,

  830. is to first

  831. give ourselves

  832. to God.

  833. That's what I pointed

  834. out at the beginning

  835. of this first fruit

  836. offerings.

  837. We are honoring

  838. God.

  839. We are doing it

  840. to Him.

  841. The focus

  842. is on Him.

  843. That's how Paul

  844. explains

  845. how one group

  846. of Christians

  847. were able

  848. to give

  849. so generously.

  850. Note this

  851. in 2 Corinthians 8.

  852. For they gave

  853. according to their means

  854. as I can testify

  855. and beyond their means

  856. of their own accord

  857. begging us

  858. earnestly

  859. for the favor

  860. of taking part

  861. in the relief

  862. of the saints

  863. and this

  864. not as we expected

  865. but they gave

  866. themselves first

  867. to the Lord

  868. and then

  869. by the will

  870. of God

  871. to us.

  872. The key

  873. to their giving,

  874. wanting to give

  875. like they did,

  876. it grew out

  877. of their relationship

  878. with the Lord.

  879. Here's what I want

  880. us to understand.

  881. When we give

  882. ourselves first

  883. to the Lord Jesus Christ

  884. in faith,

  885. in love,

  886. in commitment,

  887. everything else

  888. in our life

  889. will fall into place.

  890. When Christ

  891. is truly

  892. the Lord

  893. of our life

  894. and He's first

  895. in our life,

  896. we'll be faithful

  897. stewards

  898. of our time,

  899. of our talents,

  900. of our treasures.

  901. That includes

  902. earning it,

  903. saving,

  904. investing it,

  905. spending it,

  906. as well as

  907. giving it.

  908. The most

  909. important question

  910. for each of us

  911. this morning

  912. is this,

  913. have I truly

  914. given my life

  915. to Christ?

  916. Our lives

  917. should show it.

  918. If we have,

  919. we should know it

  920. and other people

  921. should be able

  922. to see that in us

  923. because first

  924. and foremost,

  925. our heart's desire

  926. will be to know

  927. Him better,

  928. love Him more,

  929. serve Him

  930. with all our heart,

  931. and that includes

  932. everything.

  933. Now,

  934. if that's true

  935. about you,

  936. if you think

  937. to yourself,

  938. I know,

  939. not perfectly,

  940. but I truly

  941. love the Lord,

  942. I want to know

  943. Him better,

  944. I want to be

  945. more like Him,

  946. I want you to

  947. thank God

  948. because that is

  949. a sign,

  950. a great sign

  951. that God has

  952. worked in your life

  953. in a very

  954. gracious way.

  955. God's changed you,

  956. He is changing you.

  957. If that just

  958. appeals to you,

  959. that's what you're

  960. seeking to do,

  961. to know and love

  962. and serve the Lord,

  963. just thank God

  964. and ask Him

  965. to help you

  966. to keep on.

  967. But if you're honest,

  968. you might say,

  969. that used to be true,

  970. but it's not like

  971. it used to be.

  972. So what I want you

  973. to think is this,

  974. if you have allowed

  975. some more

  976. or something

  977. to take the

  978. Lord's place

  979. in your life,

  980. admit that

  981. as the sin

  982. that it is

  983. to God

  984. right now.

  985. You may not

  986. have ever meant to,

  987. but right now,

  988. you're more concerned

  989. about doing this,

  990. pleasing yourself,

  991. or pleasing a certain

  992. person than you are

  993. pleasing God.

  994. I want to encourage

  995. you to confess

  996. that as the sin

  997. that it is,

  998. turn from it,

  999. change your mind,

  1000. repent,

1001. ask God to help you,

  1002. and then come back

  1003. to Him

  1004. in a renewed faith

  1005. and commitment.

1006. Ask Him to help you

  1007. day by day,

  1008. maybe hour by hour,

  1009. to live a

  1010. God-conscious

  1011. life.

  1012. life.

  1013. Be focused

  1014. on seeking

  1015. to know

  1016. and love

  1017. and follow

  1018. and be like

  1019. the Lord Jesus.

  1020. But if what

  1021. we're talking

  1022. about here

  1023. has never been

  1024. true about you,

  1025. you don't know

  1026. God,

  1027. you don't have

  1028. a relationship

  1029. with Christ,

  1030. and the truth

  1031. is you've never

  1032. really thought

  1033. that much about

  1034. it or cared

  1035. to.

  1036. But if you do

  1037. now,

  1038. if God's been

  1039. working in your

  1040. life these past

  1041. few weeks,

  1042. maybe through

  1043. some of the

  1044. things we've

  1045. learned,

  1046. or maybe just

  1047. today,

  1048. I want to

  1049. encourage you

  1050. to turn your

  1051. back on living

  1052. for you,

  1053. repent of

  1054. your sin,

  1055. put your trust

  1056. in Jesus,

  1057. and call upon

  1058. Him to save

  1059. you right now.

  1060. That's the most

  1061. important thing

  1062. for you to do.

  1063. I want us to

  1064. conclude this

  1065. message the same

  1066. way we began

  1067. this morning.

  1068. I want to ask

  1069. you,

  1070. how would you

  1071. instruct a new

  1072. Christian

  1073. concerning their

  1074. giving?

  1075. What if they

  1076. ask you to

  1077. tell them

  1078. how you

  1079. give,

  1080. your thoughts

  1081. on giving,

  1082. your actions,

  1083. what would you

  1084. say?

  1085. I know for a

  1086. fact that there

  1087. are many people

  1088. in this church

  1089. who have a

  1090. testimony similar

  1091. to mine about

  1092. their giving,

  1093. and so on

  1094. behalf of people

  1095. who give this

  1096. way, I want to

  1097. give you an

  1098. example.

  1099. I'm going to

  1100. give you my

  1101. and Lisa's

  1102. testimony.

  1103. I don't

  1104. remember when I

  1105. began to

  1106. tithe.

  1107. When I met

  1108. Lisa, I was

  1109. already tithing.

  1110. She was already

  1111. tithing.

  1112. When we got

  1113. married, we

  1114. were already

  1115. committed to

  1116. giving God the

  1117. first 10% that

  1118. He blessed us

  1119. with.

  1120. I'm talking

  1121. about we gave

  1122. the first 10%

  1123. of the gross

  1124. income that

  1125. we had.

  1126. We gave this

  1127. tithe to

  1128. God with an

  1129. emphasis on

  1130. giving it to

  1131. God, but we've

  1132. always given it

  1133. to Him through

  1134. our local

  1135. church, through

  1136. our church,

  1137. through this

  1138. church today.

  1139. We've always

  1140. considered my

  1141. income and her

  1142. income to be

  1143. our income.

  1144. Now, I know

  1145. everybody here

  1146. doesn't do

  1147. that.

  1148. That's not the

  1149. point this

  1150. morning.

  1151. I don't have

  1152. my money.

  1153. Lisa doesn't

  1154. have her money.

  1155. We have our

  1156. money.

  1157. And so we

  1158. give one

  1159. tithe of

  1160. our offerings,

  1161. our income

  1162. rather.

  1163. It used to be

  1164. the first check

  1165. we wrote after

  1166. we got paid,

  1167. which has been

  1168. for years now,

  1169. twice a month.

  1170. Now, we've

  1171. set it up for

  1172. that tithe to

  1173. be drafted the

  1174. day after payday,

  1175. two times a

  1176. month.

  1177. I love that.

  1178. I love online

  1179. giving.

  1180. I love having

  1181. it drafted.

  1182. You may not

  1183. want to do

  1184. that, and

  1185. that's fine

  1186. for you.

  1187. But you'd be

  1188. surprised how

  1189. many Sundays

  1190. I've sat in a

  1191. pew and

  1192. passed, seen

  1193. that plate go

  1194. by twice, and

  1195. I get home,

  1196. it's still in my

  1197. pocket.

  1198. I love having

  1199. it drafted, and

  1200. I try to think,

  1201. I don't every

  1202. Sunday, but I

  1203. try to think and

  1204. do most Sundays

  1205. when that plate

  1206. has passed.

  1207. Thank you,

  1208. Lord, for

  1209. blessing us and

  1210. allowing us to

  1211. be able to

  1212. give the way

  1213. that we're

  1214. giving now.

  1215. For over 41

  1216. years, we have

  1217. given at least

  1218. 10% of our

  1219. income to God

  1220. through our

  1221. church, regardless

  1222. of what our

  1223. income was or

  1224. what our expenses

  1225. were.

  1226. There's been

  1227. times in our

  1228. life when money

  1229. was tight, and

  1230. we cut back on

  1231. our spending.

  1232. We've never

  1233. cut back on

  1234. our tithing.

  1235. After giving

  1236. 10% to God

  1237. through the

  1238. church, we

  1239. consider what

  1240. other ways God

  1241. would have us to

  1242. give with the

  1243. other 90%.

  1244. I want to be

  1245. real honest with

  1246. you here.

  1247. We've always

  1248. practiced saving

  1249. and investing.

  1250. That's very

  1251. important.

  1252. It's wise.

  1253. It's biblical.

  1254. I just don't

  1255. realize, haven't

  1256. realized how many

  1257. people don't

  1258. understand that,

  1259. but you need to

  1260. understand that.

  1261. But we consider

  1262. what we give, the

  1263. 10% to be our

  1264. tithe.

  1265. And we consider

  1266. what else we

  1267. give to be our

  1268. offerings.

  1269. And we always,

  1270. through the years,

  1271. have given

  1272. offerings to

  1273. special cause,

  1274. special mission

  1275. causes.

  1276. Usually our

  1277. largest offering

  1278. like this is to

  1279. the Lottie Moon

  1280. Christmas offering

  1281. for international

  1282. missions that we

  1283. give through our

  1284. church.

  1285. Some years our

  1286. largest offering

  1287. has been giving

  1288. to the building

  1289. fund.

  1290. We were doing

  1291. something real

  1292. special like

  1293. building or

  1294. remodeling here.

  1295. We've made it a

  1296. habit to give to

  1297. other offerings for

  1298. various kinds of

  1299. ministries and

  1300. missions that were

  1301. biblically sound,

  1302. gospel type

  1303. organizations.

  1304. We've also

  1305. supported some

  1306. individuals who were

  1307. raising money to go

1308. on a mission trip or

  1309. being involved in

  1310. some missions,

  1311. but we do not

  1312. give to people who

1313. ask us to just go on

  1314. pleasure trips or

  1315. even educational

  1316. trips.

  1317. That ain't my

  1318. place.

  1319. I'm not sending you

  1320. around the world,

1321. but I will help you

  1322. to serve the Lord

  1323. somewhere around the

  1324. world.

  1325. We've given to

  1326. benevolent ministries

  1327. like Prison

  1328. Fellowship's Angel

  1329. Tree, Samaritan's

  1330. Purse, the Dream

  1331. Center.

1332. One reason we give to

  1333. those ministries is

  1334. because we're

  1335. supposed to help

  1336. people who are in

  1337. need, and those

  1338. kind of organizations

  1339. not only help people

  1340. who are in need,

  1341. but they share the

  1342. gospel in the

  1343. process.

  1344. We have given like

1345. this out of love and

  1346. gratitude to God for

1347. all that He has done

1348. for us and out of

  1349. obedience to what we

  1350. believe He's called us

  1351. to do.

1352. But I want to be real

  1353. clear about something.

1354. We have not and we do

1355. not give out of fear

  1356. or guilt.

1357. I grew up going to

  1358. church and all my

  1359. life, mostly growing

1360. up, I heard it taught

1361. that the tithe is the

  1362. Lord's and if you don't

1363. give it, He's going to

1364. get it some other way.

  1365. That is poor theology.

  1366. That is not biblically

  1367. sound theology.

  1368. I think if we don't

1369. give, we miss out on a

  1370. lot of blessings.

  1371. But I don't think we

  1372. should give because we're

1373. afraid God's going to do

1374. something to us to get it

  1375. another way.

  1376. You can't find that as a

  1377. motivation for giving.

1378. The result has been in

1379. our giving, God has met

1380. all of our needs and so

  1381. much more.

1382. But I want to be quick

1383. to say here, don't give

  1384. thinking God's going to

1385. make me wealthy or I'm

  1386. going to manipulate God

  1387. by my giving.

1388. It doesn't work that way.

1389. God has promised to meet

1390. our needs, but He has not

  1391. promised to meet our

  1392. wants.

1393. In our lives, we've been

  1394. blessed by having our

1395. needs met and a lot of

  1396. wants.

1397. But there's been things we

  1398. couldn't afford to do.

1399. There's been times, lots of

  1400. times we've told our

  1401. children we can't afford

1402. this because we chose to be

1403. faithful to God to give

1404. instead of just spending it

  1405. on ourselves.

1406. But we chose to do that

1407. because God has blessed us,

1408. because He sent His Son to

  1409. die for us.

  1410. We love Him.

  1411. We appreciate it.

  1412. That's our testimony.

1413. And you may not know a lot of

  1414. people in this church.

  1415. If you're a guest here today,

1416. if there's a lot of people in

1417. this church, theirs wouldn't be

1418. exactly like ours, but a lot of

1419. people in this church do the

1420. same way because I've heard them

  1421. say it.

  1422. That's our testimony.

  1423. That's how I would explain to a

1424. new Christian how to give.

  1425. What's your testimony?

  1426. How do you give?

1427. Make sure that whatever it is,

1428. it's what pleases God, what honors

1429. Him, what demonstrates your trust in

  1430. Him.

1431. And if it doesn't, talk to Him

1432. about it this week and develop a

1433. way to give that will honor God and

1434. show Him that you love Him and

  1435. trust Him.

  1436. Let's pray together.

1437. Father, show us now how we should

1438. respond to You and just help us to

  1439. do it.

1440. Help us to commit ourselves to You

1441. first and all that we are to do.

1442. and all that we have, including our

  1443. money and our giving.

1444. Let's just have an attitude of

1445. prayer and respond to the Lord as He

  1446. speaks to us.

1447. If I could help you, pray with you,

1448. I'll be here at the front and we'd be

  1449. happy to do that.
