  1. Turn with me, if you will, to Philippians.

  2. I'll be looking at Philippians chapter 4, verses 4 through 9.

    Philippians 4:4–9

  3. If you're in a prayer meeting,

  4. you'll notice that I used the same message about six weeks ago in prayer meeting.

  5. But as Fred asked me and I was preparing for this week,

  6. I just kept coming back to feeling that I needed to share this message.

  7. I think it's a very powerful and important message in our day and time.

  8. And a lot of the challenges and things that we face in our Christian walk.

  9. And so I really felt strongly about sharing this again.

  10. Also, Jamie, who normally is in prayer meeting,

  11. he does anything he can to get out of hearing me preach.

  12. So he scheduled surgery or something that week.

  13. And I felt like this is just for Jamie today.

  14. You know, Jesus tells us in many places throughout Scripture things

  15. that we often read in our Christian walk

  16. and we think how difficult and how hard they are for us to really apply

  17. and to fully obey and, you know, apply into our daily walk with the Lord.

  18. And in Matthew 6, Jesus tells us not to worry.

  19. He tells us several circumstances that we shouldn't worry about.

  20. But bottom line, we shouldn't worry about anything.

  21. And this is one of those things that I find difficult in my own life.

  22. And most individuals probably find difficult to go through life

  23. and simply not worry about anything.

  24. Now, there's plenty of things to worry about.

  25. But as we become parents,

  26. doesn't that add to our list of things to worry about?

  27. And as we become grandparents, which I did this year in February,

  28. I now have an eight-month-old grandson, had three daughters, love them all.

  29. But now I've got a grandson.

  30. It's not that I worry more about him than I worried about my children,

  31. but it adds to the things that we worry about, doesn't it?

  32. You know, we have so many things that we can worry about.

  33. And Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic said this,

  34. worry affects the circulation, the heart, the glands, the whole nervous system,

  35. and profoundly affects our health.

  36. Basically, we bring about our own detriment of our own health and our well-being by worrying.

  37. And, you know, the fact is a lot of things we worry about never happen anyway.

  38. They just, we worry about, I think 90% of the things we worry about never occur or never happen.

  39. But there's no wonder Jesus tells us not to worry,

  40. and the Bible instructs us not to worry,

  41. because it really is a detriment to our well-being and our health.

  42. So how do we walk through life?

  43. How do we go through the journey of our Christian walk with the Lord

  44. and stay true and faithful to the Word of God?

  45. How do we allow the peace of God to rule and reign in our hearts and our minds?

  46. Well, good news.

  47. Philippians gives us the answer to that,

  48. and that's why I want us to look today at Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  49. and I want us to look at verses 4 through 9.

  50. It says,

  51. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  52. I will say it again.

  53. Rejoice.

  54. Let your gentleness be evident to all.

  55. The Lord is near.

  56. Do not be anxious about anything,

  57. but in everything,

  58. by prayer and petition,

  59. with thanksgiving,

  60. present your requests to God.

  61. And the peace of God,

  62. which transcends all understanding,

  63. will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  64. Finally, brothers,

  65. whatever is true,

  66. whatever is noble,

  67. whatever is right,

  68. whatever is pure,

  69. whatever is lovely,

  70. whatever is admirable,

  71. if anything is excellent or praiseworthy,

  72. think about such things.

  73. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me

  74. or seen in me,

  75. put into practice,

  76. and the God of peace will be with you.

  77. Let's go to the Lord in prayer.

  78. Father,

  79. Father,

  80. Father,

  81. we come to you today.

  82. We open your word,

  83. and we read these words that you have given to us.

  84. And I pray that your Holy Spirit would speak to each of our hearts.

  85. I do not know all the things that cause each of us to worry

  86. or to fear

  87. or to be anxious about.

  88. But I pray,

  89. Lord,

  90. that through your word,

  91. you show us

  92. how we can give these things to you

  93. and trust you with them

  94. and that we can allow the peace of God

  95. to rule

  96. and to reign in our hearts.

  97. And it's in your holy name,

  98. I pray.

  99. Amen.

  100. You know,

  101. how do we maintain the peace of God within us

  102. and not allow the circumstances of life to overwhelm us

  103. or cause us to go through life worrisome

  104. or to be overwhelmed with things?

  105. Well,

  106. the first thing Paul says here

  107. is to rejoice in the Lord.

  108. And this is one of those things

  109. that I rarely,

  110. if ever see Paul say,

  111. I'm going to say it again.

  112. I want you to really get this.

  113. I want you to hear it.

  114. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  115. I'll say it again.

  116. Rejoice.

  117. Why does he say it that way?

  118. Why does he say,

  119. I'll say it again?

  120. Because of how important it is.

  121. But let me ask you,

  122. what do we have to rejoice in?

  123. As believers in Christ,

  124. what do we have to rejoice in?

  125. And how does it impact our demeanor

  126. or our outlook upon life?

  127. Well,

  128. let's think about it for a moment.

  129. As believers or children of God,

  130. we have been set free from the penalty of sin

  131. and we have been set free from the punishment of sin.

  132. And we have a relationship with Jesus Christ

  133. who promises,

  134. I will never leave you nor forsake you.

  135. And then when we start really thinking about who we are in Christ,

  136. it doesn't matter what else is going on around us.

  137. It's who we are in Christ

  138. and who Christ is that causes us to rejoice.

  139. Years ago,

  140. I had a gentleman,

  141. he had a,

  142. it was kind of like a calendar thing that he made,

  143. but it had different,

  144. the different names of God

  145. and what they meant.

  146. And I thought,

  147. I started using those in my daily prayer life

  148. of thinking each day or each week,

  149. one of those aspects of God

  150. and who he is.

  151. You know,

  152. sometimes we get focused upon

  153. what has God done for me lately,

  154. but rather we should really start thinking about

  155. who God is.

  156. And when we really focus on who God is

  157. and that we have a relationship with him,

  158. that we're a child of God,

  159. that causes us to rejoice

  160. no matter what else is going on around us

  161. because nothing can take away

  162. your relationship with Jesus Christ.

  163. Nothing can take away

  164. that you're a child of God,

  165. you've been set free from the penalty of sin,

  166. you've been set free from the punishment of sin,

  167. and he promises that he will always be with us

  168. and never leave us nor forsake us.

  169. Is that something to get excited about?

  170. Amen?

  171. Is that something to rejoice about?

  172. Now when we think about that

  173. and we rejoice,

  174. how does that change your outlook on life?

  175. How does that change the circumstances around you

  176. and how you see them?

  177. When we stay focused on who God is

  178. and what he has done for us

  179. and who we are in Christ

  180. and we can rejoice,

  181. it makes all those other trivial things in our life

  182. slide to the background

  183. and it gives us an uplifted, encouraging spirit

  184. and it also helps the peace of God

  185. rule and reign in our hearts.

  186. When we start thinking about all the things

  187. that are going on in the world,

  188. we think about all the political things

  189. and the division in our nation

  190. and it can worry us to death.

  191. But when we take our eyes off of that

  192. and we spend time,

  193. rejoice in the Lord always.

  194. Rejoice!

  195. And stay focused on who God is,

  196. what he has done for us,

  197. and who we are in Christ.

  198. It changes the whole perspective on life.

  199. And we can stop worrying

  200. about the things that are going on in life

  201. and think about how God is a sovereign God

  202. and he is in control.

  203. Now, a few years ago,

  204. Jim and I were in Peru

  205. and normally we stay in what's the IMB guest house.

  206. Many of you have stayed there.

  207. But that year the guest house was full

  208. and so we weren't going to be able to stay there.

  209. But they had an apartment,

  210. the International Mission Board had an apartment

  211. where some of the missionaries had gone home

  212. and they told us we could stay there

  213. which was actually much nicer than the guest house

  214. and we enjoyed it.

  215. But while I was there,

  216. I noticed in the hallway

  217. there was a bulletin board.

  218. And I don't know if the parents,

  219. homeschooling their kids,

  220. because they were full,

  221. whoever was there was full-time missionaries

  222. and whether they gave them the assignment

  223. to write out who you are in Christ

  224. and all the things Scripture tells us

  225. about who we are and how we relate to Christ.

  226. And I was really impressed.

  227. It was handwritten.

  228. So I wasn't going to sit there and recopy it,

  229. you know, modern day thinking.

  230. I just took a picture of it with my cell phone.

  231. But then I came back and I typed it up.

  232. And it may not be something you can see,

  233. but it took three PowerPoint slides

  234. and a full page of all the Scriptures

  235. that tells us I'm accepted in Christ,

  236. I'm secured in Christ,

  237. and I'm significant in Christ.

  238. I've got sheets up at the front on both sides

  239. that I would encourage you to consider picking up

  240. and looking at these.

  241. And even maybe take one a day

  242. and read it, meditate on it,

  243. include it in your prayer life,

  244. thank God for it,

  245. and really focus on who we are in Christ.

  246. Because when we focus on that,

  247. that causes us to stand before God

  248. and rejoice and worship Him and celebrate Him

  249. and helps us to understand how valuable we are

  250. because God said we're valuable.

  251. Now those of you who still have children at home

  252. or you have grandchildren,

  253. I would especially encourage you to pick this up

  254. and pass it on to them

  255. because I've noticed as I've raised my children

  256. that the world tries to tear them down.

  257. It tries to belittle them and put them down

  258. and, you know, just squash any self-confidence

  259. or any self-image that they have.

  260. And with my girls,

  261. I try to encourage them to know who they are in Christ,

  262. not who some other kid says they are

  263. or what the world tries to do in them,

  264. but their value comes in who God says they are

  265. and the value that God has placed upon them.

  266. But that's true for us adults too.

  267. You know, we need to have a self-image of ourselves

  268. in who God says we are

  269. and the value and the worth that He has placed upon us.

  270. So I encourage you to pick those up,

  271. copy that before you leave.

  272. Now, after Paul tells us to rejoice in the Lord always,

  273. he then goes on to give us a two-step process

  274. of not allowing worry to overwhelm us

  275. or to allow the peace of God to rule and reign in our heart.

  276. But before I give you those two steps,

  277. I want to mention,

  278. Paul is writing to Christians.

  279. He's assuming that his individuals that are reading this

  280. are born-again believers in Christ.

  281. Because if you do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ,

  282. you're not going to find that peace in your heart and your mind.

  283. No matter where you look,

  284. you may find glimpses or you may have moments of contentment.

  285. But overall, throughout your life,

  286. you're not going to have that peace that goes beyond understanding.

  287. And one of the things that really worries me today

  288. is I get out and I meet individuals,

  289. you know, even church-going people.

  290. I realize that there's a belief system

  291. that has somehow invaded our society

  292. that if people are a good person,

  293. if they attend church even casually,

  294. or maybe their names are on the row,

  295. or sometimes they've even been baptized,

  296. they believe that they are a child of God.

  297. But that's not the teaching of the Word of God, is it?

  298. You know, the Word of God teaches

  299. that we've surrendered our lives to Him

  300. and we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

  301. Just because we attend church

  302. or just because we're a good person

  303. doesn't mean we're a born-again believer in Christ.

  304. And so today, if you do not have a personal relationship

  305. with Jesus Christ,

  306. I would encourage you to think about that

  307. and speak to me either after the service

  308. or sometime come back and speak to Pastor Fred

  309. when he's back from vacation

  310. or to someone, a spiritual leader that you know

  311. that could speak to you about that.

  312. Because I really do think

  313. that there are a lot of people in society today

  314. that really are going to be shocked

  315. when they enter into eternity

  316. because they think they were a good person

  317. and they did good deeds.

  318. And they maybe even attended church some,

  319. but they did not have a personal relationship

  320. with Jesus Christ.

  321. And it's going to be too late for them

  322. when they find that out.

  323. And so I would encourage you

  324. to really contemplate in your own heart,

  325. in your own life,

  326. what are you trusting in for your salvation?

  327. Is it a relationship with Jesus Christ

  328. or the fact that you just come and come to church?

  329. But Paul is writing the Philippians.

  330. And the Philippians had every reason

  331. to be discouraged, to be anxious,

  332. or to be worrisome.

  333. You know, they were suffering severe persecution

  334. because of their faith in Christ.

  335. They were facing disunity and disturbances

  336. within the church.

  337. They had false leaders who had followed up Paul

  338. and come into the church

  339. and was trying to tear down the gospel message.

  340. And some were struggling

  341. with the very necessities of life.

  342. You know, they were facing and struggling

  343. with about everything

  344. that we possibly could imagine

  345. that they were up against.

  346. But Paul wanted them to know

  347. that despite those circumstances

  348. and despite those difficulties

  349. and hardships,

  350. that they could have the peace of God

  351. in their hearts

  352. and in their minds.

  353. That no matter what's going on around us,

  354. when we have that relationship with Christ,

  355. we can have peace of heart

  356. and peace of mind

  357. and we can sleep well at night

  358. and we can go through our days

  359. without worrying.

  360. And let me share with you

  361. this two-step process

  362. that Paul gives us here.

  363. The first, he says,

  364. is to tell God what you need.

  365. Go to God in prayer

  366. and tell God what you need.

  367. Now, another trend that I've seen

  368. in a lot of individuals' prayer lives today

  369. is that we treat God like Santa Claus.

  370. And we go to God and say,

  371. give me this,

  372. do this for me,

  373. give me that.

  374. And it's a lot of want

  375. more than needs.

  376. And that's not what Paul

  377. is really talking about here.

  378. He's talking about

  379. present to God your needs.

  380. Not only physical,

  381. but spiritual

  382. and other needs

  383. that you may have

  384. in your life.

  385. But go to God

  386. and share those things

  387. that you need

  388. in your life.

  389. There may be things

  390. that you're struggling with

  391. mentally or emotionally.

  392. There may be physical things

  393. that you have need.

  394. But learn to take those

  395. to God

  396. and present them to you.

  397. Now, have you ever noticed

  398. that you've done that?

  399. You've taken the time

  400. and you've gone to God

  401. and you share

  402. and then you start worrying

  403. even more

  404. than what you were beforehand.

  405. And you wonder,

  406. why did I even pray

  407. to begin with?

  408. Because all it did

  409. is make me think more

  410. about my problems

  411. than before.

  412. I found myself doing that.

  413. And it's made me wonder,

  414. should I have even

  415. spent the time in prayer?

  416. But then I realized

  417. what I was doing.

  418. I was not going to God

  419. and giving those concerns to Him.

  420. I was just telling Him

  421. about them.

  422. And then I was trying

  423. to hold on to them

  424. and keep them for myself

  425. and then try to handle them.

  426. And I just worry even more

  427. because it becomes

  428. more apparent

  429. that I can't handle

  430. these things on my own.

  431. but I'm trying my best

  432. and it just makes me worry.

  433. But when we really go to God

  434. and we give these things to Him,

  435. it's like 1 Peter 5, 7.

  436. Peter tells us

  437. to cast all your burdens

  438. upon the Lord

  439. because He cares for you.

  440. Now what do we do

  441. when we cast something?

  442. You do it like you've got those,

  443. you've seen people

  444. have something on a string

  445. and they throw it out

  446. but then it comes right back.

  447. Or when you cast something,

  448. do you turn loose of it?

  449. It says,

  450. cast all your burdens

  451. upon the Lord

  452. for He cares for you.

  453. So the principle

  454. or the truth

  455. in Philippians here

  456. is when we go to God

  457. and we give Him

  458. our worries

  459. and our concerns

  460. and our burdens,

  461. we turn loose of them

  462. and we give them to Him

  463. and then here's

  464. the real key.

  465. This is the key.

  466. We trust God.

  467. We trust God

  468. to take care of those things

  469. in His way

  470. even when it may not be our way,

  471. even when we don't like

  472. the way He does it.

  473. It may bring pain

  474. into our lives.

  475. It may bring discomfort

  476. into our lives.

  477. It may bring

  478. even more struggles

  479. in our lives.

  480. But we know God

  481. is a God of love

  482. who cares for His children.

  483. He cares for us.

  484. He has a perfect plan

  485. and will for our lives

  486. and He is sovereign

  487. and He can handle

  488. and take care

  489. of the things

  490. that go on

  491. in our lives.

  492. And so the real key

  493. is do we trust God?

  494. Do we really trust Him

  495. with our lives

  496. and our circumstances

  497. even when it's not

  498. the same will or plan

  499. as what we want?

  500. You see,

  501. sometimes we pray

  502. and we're like,

  503. I don't even know

  504. if I want to ask God this

  505. because I want it my way

  506. and I don't think God

  507. will want it the way

  508. I want it

  509. and I want it my way.

  510. But we've got to learn

  511. to trust God

  512. and His will

  513. for our lives.

  514. Do you really trust Him today?

  515. Do you really know

  516. He cares for you?

  517. He loves you?

  518. He can handle

  519. your problems.

  520. He can handle

  521. your worries

  522. and your concerns.

  523. He can handle

  524. the things

  525. that are going on

  526. on the world scene.

  527. He can handle

  528. global warming

  529. or the political division

  530. in our land.

  531. Can we give those

  532. to Him,

  533. turn loose of them

  534. and trust Him?

  535. Because when we do,

  536. guess what?

  537. What does the Word of God say?

  538. Not what Jeff says.

  539. This isn't a feel-good

  540. motivational speech today.

  541. What does God's Word tell us?

  542. The peace of God

  543. which is beyond

  544. human understanding

  545. will rule and reign

  546. in our hearts

  547. and our minds.

  548. Now imagine,

  549. have you met people

  550. that go through life

  551. and you could just

  552. look at them

  553. and tell

  554. they don't have a worry

  555. in the world.

  556. They're confident,

  557. they're just optimistic,

  558. upbeat, positive.

  559. You've met people

  560. like that

  561. and you wonder,

  562. what do they not know

  563. that I know?

  564. Or what makes them

  565. so confident?

  566. What makes them

  567. have so much peace?

  568. They don't know

  569. what's going on

  570. with the United States

  571. and Russia.

  572. They don't know

  573. what's going on

  574. with China.

  575. I mean,

  576. did they not know

  577. what's going on

  578. with global warming?

  579. I mean,

  580. we could run around

  581. and be frantic

  582. about the things

  583. that are going on

  584. in our world

  585. but when people see

  586. you have peace

  587. in your heart

  588. and in your mind,

  589. a peace that is

  590. beyond human reason,

  591. they're going to want

  592. to know

  593. how you have that peace.

  594. This week I had

  595. a lady call me.

  596. She's not a member

  597. of this church,

  598. doesn't attend here

  599. but I've met her

  600. through a community

  601. Bible study

  602. she just wanted

  603. me to pray for her

  604. because she was

  605. just diagnosed

  606. with stomach cancer.

  607. She said it's

  608. stomach cancer

  609. that has no cure

  610. for it.

  611. But she wanted

  612. me to pray for her

  613. but bottom line

  614. she wanted

  615. her cancer

  616. and her life

  617. to bring glory

  618. to the Lord.

  619. She wanted

  620. this experience

  621. to be a witness

  622. to God

  623. and she was

  624. trusting

  625. the Lord

  626. in this situation

  627. no matter

  628. what else

  629. happened.

  630. You know

  631. when we trust

  632. God

  633. when we really

  634. really grow

  635. to trust

  636. God

  637. and I'm not

  638. saying by the way

  639. that I'm there yet.

  640. I'm not saying

  641. I never worry

  642. I'm still growing

  643. like the rest

  644. of us

  645. but when we

  646. get to that point

  647. where we're growing

  648. and we learn

  649. to trust God

  650. more

  651. and more

  652. and more

  653. that even

  654. in times

  655. when our world

  656. is crumbling

  657. around us

  658. even in those

  659. moments

  660. when the doctor

  661. has given us

  662. bad news

  663. or we've

  664. been laid off

  665. from our job

  666. or marriage

  667. is not going

  668. well

  669. we can trust

  670. that God

  671. has a will

  672. and a plan

  673. for our lives

  674. and we can trust

  675. that He's working

  676. to bring about

  677. His will.

  678. He may be

  679. molding

  680. and shaping us

  681. for future service.

  682. He may be

  683. removing things

  684. out of our lives

  685. that we need

  686. removed

  687. so that we

  688. look more

  689. like Christ

  690. and He's

  691. preparing us

  692. for the things

  693. that He has

  694. in our lives

  695. but when we

  696. trust Him

  697. then that's

  698. when the peace

  699. of God

  700. will rule

  701. and reign

  702. in our hearts

  703. and then the next

  704. thing He says

  705. is to thank Him

  706. He says

  707. with thanksgiving

  708. you know

  709. when we lift

  710. our burdens

  711. or cast our

  712. burdens

  713. upon Christ

  714. and we give

  715. it to Him

  716. then we can

  717. thank Him

  718. for it

  719. because we know

  720. that He's going

  721. to be working

  722. to bring about

  723. His will

  724. and James 1.6

  725. tells us

  726. that if we pray

  727. but doubt

  728. then we shouldn't

  729. expect anything

  730. from the Lord

  731. and so when we

  732. give it to the Lord

  733. and we really

  734. have a thankful

  735. spirit

  736. we're showing

  737. evidence

  738. that we're

  739. trusting God

  740. that He's going

  741. to answer

  742. our prayers

  743. in a manner

  744. that He wills

  745. not necessarily

  746. ours

  747. so when we

  748. pray

  749. you know

  750. we need to

  751. follow that up

  752. with thanking

  753. God in advance

  754. thank you Lord

  755. in advance

  756. for I know

  757. that you're going

  758. to hear me

  759. and you're going

  760. to respond

  761. years ago

  762. I was struggling

  763. because I knew

  764. someone with cancer

  765. and I had never

  766. seen God heal

  767. anyone miraculously

  768. with cancer

  769. before

  770. you know

  771. terminal cancer

  772. and so I

  773. asked a gentleman

  774. how do I

  775. really pray

  776. and trust

  777. that God

  778. is going

  779. to answer

  780. you know

  781. I wanted

  782. to have faith

  783. but I wanted

  784. to believe

  785. that God

  786. would answer

  787. in the manner

  788. in which I was

  789. praying

  790. and he told me

  791. your faith

  792. isn't in that

  793. God will do

  794. what you ask

  795. your faith

  796. is in God

  797. your faith

  798. is that God

  799. is in control

  800. and that

  801. he is a

  802. sovereign God

  803. and will bring

  804. about his purposes

  805. and his will

  806. and as Christians

  807. even if we have

  808. a terminal illness

  809. and we're facing

  810. death

  811. we know we can

  812. trust God

  813. we can trust

  814. him

  815. knowing that

  816. if our life

  817. does end

  818. we will spend

  819. eternity

  820. in heaven

  821. with him

  822. and our goal

  823. is that

  824. our life

  825. and our death

  826. would bring

  827. glory and honor

  828. to him

  829. and that people

  830. would see God

  831. in us

  832. in whatever

  833. God allows

  834. into our lives

  835. now look with me

  836. quickly at verse

  837. 8 and 9

  838. finally brothers

  839. whatever is true

  840. whatever is noble

  841. whatever is right

  842. whatever is pure

  843. whatever is lovely

  844. whatever is admirable

  845. if anything is excellent

  846. or praise worthy

  847. think about

  848. such things

  849. whatever you have

  850. learned or received

  851. or heard from me

  852. or seen in me

  853. put into practice

  854. and the God

  855. of peace

  856. the God

  857. of peace

  858. will be

  859. with you

  860. next to trusting

  861. God's plans

  862. for our lives

  863. learning to keep

  864. our mind

  865. focused upon

  866. that which is holy

  867. that which is pure

  868. that which is true

  869. and worthy of praise

  870. may be one of the

  871. hardest things

  872. that we learn

  873. to do

  874. we live in a world

  875. where negative news

  876. sells

  877. doesn't it

  878. bad news

  879. sells

  880. and so it's really hard

  881. because everywhere

  882. around us

  883. we're getting all

  884. this negative

  885. news

  886. negative messages

  887. negative stories

  888. you know

  889. all this negative

  890. all the time

  891. and it's hard

  892. for us

  893. to keep

  894. our minds

  895. focused

  896. on that

  897. which is pure

  898. that which is holy

  899. that which is good

  900. that which is

  901. admirable

  902. and so how do we

  903. do that

  904. well I've had

  905. to turn the TV

  906. off in the mornings

  907. and not watch

  908. the morning news

  909. because

  910. the morning news

  911. is filled with

  912. everything negative

  913. and bad

  914. you can find

  915. I used to love

  916. getting up in the morning

  917. and after my prayer

  918. and Bible study

  919. I'd like to eat breakfast

  920. and watch

  921. a few minutes

  922. of the news

  923. I'm a headlines guy

  924. I don't read long stories

  925. I read headlines

  926. bam

  927. and I'd watch

  928. headline news

  929. or I'd watch

  930. a few minutes

  931. of one of the local

  932. news channels

  933. and be on my way

  934. but I found

  935. I have to quit

  936. doing that

  937. because everything

  938. on there

  939. is negative

  940. everything

  941. especially

  942. the CNN

  943. and Fox News

  944. both of them

  945. are always focused

  946. on what's

  947. wrong

  948. or what's

  949. you know

  950. not right

  951. about

  952. this group

  953. or that group

  954. or our nation

  955. or something

  956. and so

  957. I decided

  958. I don't need

  959. that in my life

  960. anymore

  961. I may still

  962. read some headlines

  963. but

  964. occasionally

  965. watch a little bit

  966. of the news

  967. just so I know

  968. what's going on

  969. in the world

  970. but I don't

  971. spend much time

  972. with it at all

  973. and focus more

  974. on spending time

  975. with God

  976. in the morning

  977. spend time

  978. in the word of God

  979. I also like

  980. to listen

  981. to music

  982. in the mornings

  983. and play

  984. messages

  985. that are getting

  986. in my head

  987. and starting

  988. my day off

  989. focused on

  990. God

  991. focused upon

  992. who he is

  993. focused upon

  994. his word

  995. his promises

  996. and his truths

  997. and get my day

  998. started right

  999. and then throughout

  1000. the day

  1001. we need to make

  1002. sure we're feeding

  1003. our mind

  1004. with positive things

1005. so how do we do

  1006. that?

  1007. for me

  1008. it's music

  1009. you know

  1010. I like to listen

  1011. to Christian music

  1012. for those of you

  1013. who are irritated

  1014. at people playing

  1015. Christmas music

  1016. I've already started

  1017. playing Christmas music

  1018. I want those

  1019. positive messages

  1020. in my mind

  1021. positive thoughts

  1022. in my head

  1023. and keep me going

  1024. throughout the day

1025. for you it may be

  1026. something different

1027. for you it may be

  1028. taking a walk

  1029. in nature

  1030. it may be

  1031. memorizing scripture

  1032. and reciting

  1033. scripture

  1034. throughout the day

  1035. it may be

  1036. something different

  1037. for you

1038. but we need to find

1039. what is it going to

  1040. take to get us

  1041. to cut the negative

  1042. demoralizing

  1043. depressing messages

  1044. out of our mind

  1045. and feed our mind

1046. with that which is holy

  1047. that which is true

  1048. that which is pure

  1049. and that which is

  1050. good

  1051. and when you find

  1052. yourself drifting

  1053. into worry

  1054. or negativity

  1055. and getting away

  1056. from focused

  1057. on God

  1058. just stop

  1059. you know

  1060. most of us

  1061. have spent a lifetime

  1062. probably having

  1063. the wrong thought

  1064. processes

  1065. and it takes time

  1066. years

  1067. maybe the rest

  1068. of our lives

  1069. to try to reprogram

  1070. how we think

  1071. and so

  1072. when we find

  1073. ourselves

  1074. thinking wrong

  1075. stop

  1076. make a conscious

  1077. decision

  1078. that I'm not

  1079. going to think

  1080. like that

  1081. and get back

  1082. to the Lord

  1083. baby stop

  1084. and pray

  1085. and ask God

  1086. to help us

  1087. to stop worrying

  1088. about all these

  1089. things

  1090. or stop being

  1091. anxious about

  1092. all the stuff

  1093. that's going on

  1094. or stop just

  1095. having negative

  1096. thought processes

  1097. and refocus

  1098. upon the Lord

  1099. that's where

  1100. scripture memorization

  1101. is really handy

  1102. because we can

  1103. quote a scripture

  1104. we can remind

  1105. ourselves of things

  1106. that God's word

  1107. says contrary

  1108. to the words

  1109. of the world

  1110. and get ourselves

  1111. focused back

  1112. on the Lord

  1113. or for me again

  1114. it's Christian music

  1115. because it refocused

  1116. my mind

  1117. and my attention

  1118. upon the Lord

  1119. and we focus

  1120. upon who God

  1121. is

  1122. what he's done

  1123. what he's capable

  1124. of doing

  1125. rather than to focus

  1126. upon the things

  1127. we're worried about

  1128. you know years ago

  1129. my last church

  1130. my secretary

  1131. had a little thing

  1132. little picture

  1133. it was a cartoon

  1134. but it said

  1135. instead of telling

  1136. God how big

  1137. your storm is

  1138. why don't you

  1139. tell the storm

  1140. how big your God

  1141. is

  1142. and we have to

  1143. focus and rechange

  1144. the way we think

  1145. to stay focused

  1146. upon God

  1147. and when

  1148. we do these things

  1149. when we

  1150. really trust God

  1151. we go to God

  1152. when we find

  1153. ourselves worrying

  1154. go to God

  1155. pray about everything

  1156. instead of worrying

  1157. pray about it

  1158. give it to God

  1159. trust God

  1160. and thank him

  1161. in advance

  1162. for what he's

  1163. going to do

1164. and the word of God

  1165. not Jeff

  1166. the word of God

  1167. tells us what

  1168. the peace of God

  1169. which is beyond

  1170. human understanding

  1171. will rule

  1172. and reign

  1173. in our hearts

  1174. and our minds

1175. let's go to the Lord

  1176. in prayer

  1177. Father we thank you

  1178. we praise you

  1179. for your word

  1180. and your truth

  1181. and your message

  1182. we thank you

  1183. for it today Lord

  1184. and we ask

  1185. that you forgive us

  1186. where we've spent

  1187. time worrying

  1188. where we spend

  1189. time doubting

  1190. and I pray Lord

  1191. that you help us

  1192. to continue

  1193. to grow

  1194. in our ability

  1195. to trust you

  1196. to believe in you

  1197. and to give

  1198. our burdens

  1199. and our concerns

  1200. to you

  1201. and trust you

  1202. that you're going

  1203. to work in them

  1204. to accomplish

  1205. your purpose

  1206. and your will

  1207. and we thank you

1208. for that in Jesus name

  1209. amen

  1210. I'm going to ask

  1211. the musicians

  1212. I guess William

  1213. to play quietly

  1214. and you continue

  1215. to pray

1216. and if I can pray

  1217. with you this morning

  1218. I'd be glad

  1219. to do so

1220. and if I can pray
