  1. Did you do anything to prepare for the Arctic blast we got in the middle of last week?

  2. Well, I heard the weather forecast and I lift the pilot light in my gas logs.

  3. And on Tuesday night and Wednesday night, I fired them up.

  4. I enjoyed the warmth.

  5. I enjoyed seeing the fire burn.

  6. Well, I've been thinking about a different kind of fire ever since our men's ministry dinner, supper, whatever it was that Rick cooked.

  7. He did a good job, by the way, last Tuesday night.

  8. Boy Scout brought a great message on the importance of every Christian,

  9. making sure we keep the spiritual fire burning brightly in our lives every day.

  10. He was talking about maintaining a close relationship with Christ in terms of a spiritual fire.

  11. Well, that got my attention.

  12. It really did.

  13. I have thought about the kind of spiritual fire that is really burning in my life right now.

  14. And I've thought about what kind of spiritual fire is burning in the lives of our church family.

  15. It really got my attention.

  16. I've thought about it off and on some this week.

  17. You know, if we are Christians, when we were saved, here's what happened.

  18. God did a supernatural work called regeneration or the new birth.

  19. He gave us the desire to acknowledge our sin and separation from God, to turn from our sin, change our mind about the way we're living, repent.

  20. He caused the light to come on.

  21. I'm talking about He enabled us to see by faith that Jesus Christ is His Son.

  22. And He came into this world to die on a cross as our substitute, pay the penalty for our sins.

  23. When God saves us, He does this work in us to give us such a desire to turn from our sin, to trust Jesus.

  24. He puts His Spirit in us when He does this, to live with us forever.

  25. Every Christian is indwelled by the Holy Spirit.

  26. Now one way to describe this, this work of God when He saves us, is that God's lit a spiritual fire in our soul.

  27. Now, if you are a Christian, you know what I'm talking about.

  28. You may not have ever thought about it exactly this way.

  29. But if you're a Christian, you know that whenever it was God saved you, He did a work in your soul, heart, life, however you want to describe it.

  30. He lit a spiritual fire.

  31. Now, nobody in this room is going to pretend that there's always been a burning, bright, warm spiritual fire in our lives.

  32. So let's just all be honest.

  33. If you're a Christian, is the spiritual fire within you right now more like a pilot light?

  34. A pilot light in my gas logs.

  35. When it's lit, there is fire.

  36. But you've got to go over to the fireplace.

  37. You've got to look down and see that little bitty flame.

  38. And there may be some Christians in this room.

  39. You know that the Spirit of God lives within you.

  40. You know you're a follower of Jesus.

  41. But for whatever reason, the fire is burning very, very dimly right now.

  42. Or would you say that by the grace of God, the fire in you right now, spiritually speaking, is a roaring blaze?

  43. People who know you, they see the Lord in you.

  44. They even feel the warmth of His love when they're around you.

  45. That may be some people's experience right now.

  46. And you thank God if it is.

  47. Or it could be that right now, you're not really a pilot light, but you're not a blazing fire either.

  48. You're somewhere in between.

  49. Well, this message this morning is designed just like that message on Tuesday night.

  50. To cause us all to think about what kind of fire is burning right now.

  51. And to help us do that, I want you to turn to 2 Timothy chapter 1.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  52. 2 Timothy chapter 1.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  53. And what we're going to do is look at how the Apostle Paul had to encourage Timothy,

  54. a dedicated, committed Christian,

  55. leader.

  56. But Paul had to encourage him

  57. at times

  58. to fan

  59. the fire,

  60. fan the flame that was in him

  61. because it wasn't burning bright enough.

  62. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  63. chapter 1.

  64. Let me say this.

  65. I'm interrupting the series

  66. on our stewardship

  67. of time now.

  68. We're talking about our stewardship

  69. in life of our time, talents, and treasures.

  70. Last week, we began the part about time.

  71. We're going to continue it next week, Lord willing.

  72. This week, today,

  73. I want us to think about

  74. the spiritual fire

  75. if

  76. it is burning

  77. and how brightly it's burning in our lives.

  78. 2 Timothy 1, beginning in verse 3.

  79. Paul is writing

  80. to Timothy.

  81. This is a letter from Paul to Timothy.

  82. I thank God whom I serve,

  83. as did my ancestors,

  84. with a clear conscience,

  85. as I remember you constantly

  86. in my prayers night and day,

  87. and as I remember your tears.

  88. I long to see you

  89. that I may be filled with joy.

  90. I am reminded of your sincere faith,

  91. a faith that dwelt first

  92. in your grandmother Lois

  93. and your mother Eunice,

  94. and now I am sure.

  95. He's talking about I'm confident.

  96. Not a guess,

  97. but I'm confident

  98. dwells in you as well.

  99. For this reason,

  100. I remind you

  101. to fan into flame

  102. the gift of God

  103. which is in you

  104. through the laying on of my hands,

  105. for God gave us

  106. a spirit not of fear,

  107. but of power

  108. and love

  109. and self-control.

  110. Does the fire

  111. of Christian faithfulness

  112. need to be fanned

  113. into a flame

  114. in your life

  115. right now?

  116. Think about it.

  117. Sometimes,

  118. in all of our lives

  119. as Christians,

  120. sometimes the fire

  121. is low.

  122. Maybe the flicker

  123. of a pilot light.

  124. Sometimes,

  125. the light is just not,

  126. the fire is not

  127. what we know

  128. it ought to be,

  129. what it has been

  130. in the past,

  131. what we want it to be today.

  132. And so,

  133. even in faithful Christians,

  134. sometimes we need

  135. to fan the fire,

  136. fan the flame.

  137. That was true

  138. about Timothy.

  139. Paul met Timothy

  140. on his second mission trip.

  141. It's recorded

  142. in Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  143. We see from

  144. the New Testament record

  145. in Acts

  146. and in some of Paul's letters

  147. that they had

  148. a very close relationship.

  149. Paul considered him

  150. to be like

  151. a spiritual son.

  152. Paul was Timothy's mentor.

  153. And Paul had

  154. a lot of confidence

  155. in Timothy.

  156. He sent Timothy

  157. sometimes to be

  158. his representative

  159. to another church.

  160. He had confidence

  161. in Timothy's ability

  162. to be a faithful

  163. Christian leader.

  164. He even gave him

  165. the responsibility

  166. of leading the church

  167. at Ephesus

  168. and dealing

  169. with some hard issues

  170. for a period of time.

  171. Both 1 and 2 Timothy

  172. in the New Testament,

  173. two letters,

  174. 1 Timothy,

  175. 2 Timothy.

  176. Both were written

  177. to this young man

  178. when he was still

  179. at Ephesus

  180. leading the church

  181. there.

  182. Timothy was not

  183. nearly as strong

  184. a leader

  185. as the Apostle Paul was.

  186. Paul knew it

  187. and he knew him well.

  188. That's no knock

  189. on Timothy.

  190. It's just who he was.

  191. And so sometimes

  192. as you read

  193. through these letters,

  194. sometimes you see

  195. Paul having to

  196. encourage Timothy.

  197. Sometimes he's

  198. having to

  199. prod him along.

  200. Sometimes he just

  201. basically giving him

  202. a list of instructions.

  203. Sometimes Timothy

  204. had to be told,

  205. remain faithful,

  206. be strong,

  207. hang in there,

  208. fulfill your

  209. responsibilities.

  210. If you have any doubts,

  211. read 1 and 2 Timothy.

  212. You see this.

  213. And now what we're

  214. looking at this morning

  215. specifically,

  216. verse 6,

  217. for this reason,

  218. I remind you

  219. to fan

  220. into flame

  221. the gift

  222. of God.

  223. Now,

  224. if Paul

  225. had to say

  226. that to Timothy,

  227. being the man

  228. that he was,

  229. mentored,

  230. trained,

  231. equipped

  232. by Paul,

  233. how much more

  234. do we need

  235. to hear that

  236. at times?

  237. And this may be

  238. the very time

  239. that you need

  240. to hear this

  241. as well.

  242. But,

  243. before we go

  244. any further,

  245. why would Timothy

  246. need to hear this?

  247. Why?

  248. Why do we

  249. let the fire

  250. that God lights

  251. in us

  252. as a Christian,

  253. that sometimes

  254. blazes brightly,

  255. why do we

  256. let it go out?

  257. Why does it

  258. get dim

  259. at times?

  260. Well,

  261. no doubt

  262. there's a lot

  263. of reasons

  264. and if the fire,

  265. the spiritual fire

  266. of faithfulness

  267. is not,

  268. you know,

  269. blazing up

  270. in your life

  271. right now,

  272. you think to yourself,

  273. why?

  274. What are some reasons?

  275. Identify the reasons,

  276. that's important

  277. before you can

  278. find the solution.

  279. For some people

  280. it may just be

  281. the busyness of life.

  282. You may not have

  283. really thought about it

  284. right now,

  285. but you're just

  286. so pulled

  287. in different directions.

  288. So many demands

  289. on your time,

  290. you never intended

  291. for it to be,

  292. but when you're

  293. confronted with this

  294. question this morning

  295. about the fire,

  296. the spiritual fire

  297. of commitment

  298. in your life,

  299. you know,

  300. you have to admit,

  301. it is not nearly

  302. as glowing

  303. as it used to be.

  304. A lot of different reasons,

  305. but there's two

  306. in Timothy's life

  307. that we see in Scripture

  308. and so that's where

  309. I want us to focus

  310. our attention this morning.

  311. Number one,

  312. he had some physical problems.

  313. Timothy dealt

  314. with physical illnesses

  315. at times

  316. and Paul instructs him

  317. on how to deal with it

  318. in 1 Timothy chapter 5.

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  319. He says,

  320. no longer drink

  321. only water,

  322. but use a little wine

  323. for the sake

  324. of your stomach

  325. and your frequent ailments.

  326. Now Paul's not encouraging him

  327. to go out

  328. and become an alcoholic.

  329. He is saying,

  330. use wine

  331. for the sake

  332. of your stomach

  333. and your frequent ailments.

  334. Paul knew Timothy.

  335. He knew that he had

  336. stomach problems

  337. that evidently

  338. caused him

  339. not to be able

  340. to function

  341. or function well

  342. at times.

  343. And so,

  344. here's the solution.

  345. You got a problem?

  346. There is a legitimate,

  347. helpful way

  348. to take care of it.

  349. Paul's saying,

  350. do it.

  351. We don't know

  352. why he stopped,

  353. but Paul's telling him now,

  354. take care of yourself.

  355. Do what you need to do

  356. to be in better

  357. physical condition.

  358. Now,

  359. before we go any further,

  360. I want to say something

  361. to make this real clear.

  362. I know

  363. that people have

  364. physical illnesses,

  365. problems,

  366. problems that prevent

  367. them from doing

  368. a lot of things

  369. they would like to do.

  370. There may be times

  371. in your life

  372. when there is a physical

  373. issue going on

  374. and you just cannot

  375. do what you want

  376. to do,

  377. what you've committed

  378. to do,

  379. and it's legitimate.

  380. So,

  381. I'm not trying to inflict

  382. guilt on someone

  383. who has this kind

  384. of problem.

  385. But some problems,

  386. some issues

  387. that we deal with,

  388. they just make us

  389. feel bad.

  390. They may

  391. cause some pain.

  392. They may

  393. make us a little bit

  394. weak.

  395. But the truth is,

  396. we can deal with it.

  397. Truth is,

  398. there's a lot of things

  399. that happen to us

  400. in life,

  401. we just gotta learn

  402. to suck it up and go.

  403. That is,

  404. what can be sucked up

  405. and gone with?

  406. We live today

  407. in a very soft world.

  408. You don't have to tell

  409. many people

  410. to take care of themselves.

  411. They go overboard

  412. in taking care of themselves.

  413. But in a day gone by,

  414. more people,

  415. Christians and otherwise,

  416. just had the mentality,

  417. you do what you can do,

  418. even if it is

  419. in the midst of difficulty.

  420. One of those men

  421. was John Calvin.

  422. One of the most

  423. influential Christians

  424. who has ever lived

  425. was John Calvin.

  426. Most people in this room,

  427. you're familiar

  428. with the Protestant Reformation.

  429. One of the most

  430. important events,

  431. God breaking into history

  432. in the history

  433. of the world.

  434. The two most well-known

  435. and leading reformers

  436. were Martin Luther

  437. and John Calvin.

  438. Calvin lived a very

  439. productive life.

  440. He wrote many books

  441. on the Christian life,

  442. on theology,

  443. the deep things of God.

  444. He wrote a commentary

  445. on just about every book

  446. of the Bible.

  447. Not all,

  448. but just about every book

  449. of the Bible.

  450. He preached numerous times,

  451. most weeks,

  452. and multiple times

  453. on Sundays.

  454. He corresponded widely

  455. with people.

  456. One of his greatest influences

  457. was through his written correspondence.

  458. He was also very involved

  459. as a civic leader

  460. in the city of Geneva.

  461. Calvin did more

  462. than anyone I've ever known.

  463. Accomplished more

  464. than anyone I've ever known.

  465. I want you to look

  466. at how he did all this

  467. in the midst of dealing

  468. with multiple illnesses.

  469. Look at this.

  470. He was plagued

  471. with constant headaches

  472. which hardly ever left him.

  473. The pain was so intense

  474. that many nights

  475. he could not sleep.

  476. He also had some kind

  477. of disease of the trachea

  478. which,

  479. when he spoke too much,

  480. caused him to spit blood.

  481. Several attacks of pleurisy

  482. prepared the way

  483. for consumption

  484. of which he finally died.

  485. He had acute hemorrhoids,

  486. the pain of which

  487. was unbearably increased

  488. by an internal abscess

  489. that would not heal.

  490. He had gallstones

  491. and kidney stones

  492. in addition to stomach cramps

  493. and wicked intestinal influenzas.

  494. To top it all off,

  495. he had acute arthritis.

  496. In one of his letters

  497. to a friend,

  498. he said,

  499. if only my condition

  500. were not a constant

  501. death struggle.

  502. Now,

  503. what I've just read

  504. about Calvin

  505. is widely known

  506. by people

  507. who read him,

  508. historians.

  509. I read where

  510. some people said

  511. that Calvin was,

  512. he was sometimes

  513. hard to deal with.

  514. He was irritable a lot.

  515. Wouldn't you?

  516. But Calvin

  517. was used by God

  518. in a tremendous way.

  519. But all that he did,

  520. he worked through pain,

  521. discomfort,

  522. dealing with multiple

  523. physical issues.

  524. He left a lasting mark

  525. on the Christian church

  526. in the midst of all this

  527. and in a relatively short life

  528. of 54 years.

  529. It's hard to find

  530. someone like that today,

  531. isn't it?

  532. We live in a world

  533. where people are soft

  534. and they use

  535. the least little problem

  536. as an excuse

  537. to avoid fulfilling

  538. their responsibilities,

  539. to avoid work,

  540. to avoid fulfilling

  541. their commitments

  542. to friends,

  543. to family,

  544. in the church.

  545. Now again,

  546. I want to emphasize,

  547. some people are truly

  548. disabled

  549. and unable

  550. to live

  551. a physically demanding

  552. life.

  553. And if that's you

  554. at times,

  555. don't feel guilty.

  556. Don't feel guilty

  557. for what you cannot help

  558. and it's serious.

  559. It prevents you

  560. from doing things

  561. you really want to do,

  562. fun things,

  563. as well as things

  564. you might not want to do

  565. that are more

  566. of a responsibility.

  567. But many people

  568. are too quick

  569. today

  570. to give in

  571. to physical problems

  572. and to refuse

  573. to just work through

  574. minor pain

  575. and discomfort.

  576. What we all need

  577. to understand,

  578. God calls us

  579. to serve Him

  580. with the gifts,

  581. talents,

  582. and abilities

  583. that He gives us

  584. both in the world

  585. and in the church

  586. and God's call

  587. is not limited

  588. to just serving Him

  589. on the days

  590. when we feel great.

  591. God's call

  592. is not limited

  593. to just the times

  594. when everything's

  595. going our way

  596. and we have no aches

  597. and pains

  598. or things like that.

  599. God calls us

  600. to be faithful,

  601. for you to be

  602. a faithful husband,

  603. father,

  604. wife,

  605. mother,

  606. child,

  607. student,

  608. worker,

  609. worker in this church.

  610. Even on the days

  611. that you don't feel

  612. real good,

  613. on the days

  614. that you'd rather

  615. just be sort of

  616. taking it easy,

  617. sitting back

  618. in your easy chair.

  619. God calls us

  620. to be faithful

  621. to Him,

  622. to the responsibilities

  623. of life

  624. that He has given us

  625. and sometimes

  626. that means

  627. we've got to deal with

  628. and work through

  629. some pain

  630. and discomfort.

  631. You know,

  632. sometimes God

  633. uses us

  634. specifically

  635. our weaknesses

  636. instead of our strengths.

  637. That's what Calvin

  638. discovered in his life.

  639. You know,

  640. you might think,

  641. well,

  642. what could Calvin

  643. have accomplished

  644. if he'd have been well?

  645. he may not have

  646. accomplished half

  647. as much as he did

  648. because God

  649. used him

  650. in those kind

  651. of situations

  652. the way it did.

  653. That's what the

  654. Apostle Paul learned.

  655. Calvin,

  656. no doubt,

  657. took comfort

  658. from what Paul said

  659. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  660. chapter 12.

  661. See,

  662. Paul had some kind

  663. of problem

  664. called what he called

  665. his thorn in his flesh.

  666. Some people think

  667. he may have been

  668. poor eyesight.

  669. Some people think

  670. he may have battled

  671. malaria off and on

  672. throughout his ministry,

  673. throughout his life.

  674. Well,

  675. Paul understood

  676. his weaknesses,

  677. that thorn in the flesh,

  678. and I want you to look

  679. what he did

  680. in relation to God

  681. about it.

  682. He says,

  683. three times I pleaded

  684. with the Lord

  685. to take it away from me.

  686. But he said to me,

  687. my grace is sufficient

  688. for you,

  689. for my power

  690. is made perfect

  691. in weakness.

  692. God chose

  693. for Paul

  694. to have to deal

  695. with whatever

  696. that thorn was,

  697. and God

  698. was going to use him

  699. in that particular

  700. weak situation

  701. for greater glory,

  702. for greater good.

  703. Paul's life

  704. was not one

  705. of fun

  706. and feel good,

  707. but God gave him

  708. the grace

  709. to work through

  710. the pain,

  711. the suffering,

  712. and be the effective

  713. man of God,

  714. servant of God,

  715. writer of Scripture,

  716. missionary evangelist

  717. that he was.

  718. I want to emphasize

  719. here to today's parents,

  720. grandparents,

  721. teachers,

  722. influencers,

  723. influencers of children.

  724. Children need to learn

  725. that just feeling bad

  726. is not an excuse

  727. to stay home

  728. from school

  729. or church

  730. or not fulfill

  731. your responsibilities.

  732. If I make somebody mad,

  733. so be it.

  734. don't allow

  735. your child

  736. to be weak

  737. because you are weak

  738. and you teach them

  739. to be weak

  740. and just give in

  741. to any minor ache

  742. or pain

  743. or not feel good

  744. or somebody hurt

  745. their feelings

  746. and things along

  747. this matter.

  748. don't allow

  749. your child

  750. to use such

  751. excuses

  752. to be lazy

  753. and or

  754. irresponsible

  755. which a lot

  756. of people

  757. will

  758. both children

  759. and adults.

  760. The best way

  761. to teach

  762. your children

  763. this is by

  764. example,

  765. by you being

  766. this way.

  767. When I was

  768. growing up,

  769. my mother

  770. at times

  771. had extreme

  772. migraine headaches.

  773. But I can probably

  774. count on one hand

  775. the number of times

  776. she actually

  777. went into bed,

  778. went to bed,

  779. got the room

  780. real dark

  781. and only came out

  782. to go to the bathroom

  783. to throw up.

  784. She battled

  785. those headaches

  786. for years.

  787. Got up every

  788. morning and went

  789. to J.P.

  790. Stevens Clemson's

  791. textile plant

  792. and worked

  793. all day,

  794. every day.

  795. Came home

  796. and worked.

  797. That was the

  798. model,

  799. example,

  800. she set for me.

  801. And I can remember

  802. one time as a kid

  803. saying something

  804. to her about,

  805. I don't feel good,

  806. mama.

  807. I don't want

  808. to go to school

  809. today.

  810. And I can remember

  811. it very well.

  812. She told me

  813. there's a lot of days

  814. I don't feel like

  815. going to work.

  816. There's a lot of days

  817. you're not going to

  818. feel like doing

  819. a lot of things

  820. but you just got

  821. to do it.

  822. My mother was

  823. a fine Christian

  824. woman,

  825. hard worker

  826. and she was

  827. sympathetic

  828. occasionally

  829. when you really

  830. needed sympathy,

  831. seriously.

  832. but she saw

  833. through the

  834. scams,

  835. the whining,

  836. the being

  837. weak.

  838. She just

  839. basically told you

  840. suck it up and

  841. go bud

  842. and that's what

  843. you need to do

  844. as a parent,

  845. as a grandparent,

  846. as a teacher.

  847. Oh,

  848. I know you'll

  849. get into it

  850. today because

  851. of these weak

  852. parents that

  853. don't support you

  854. as you're trying

  855. to help their

  856. children.

  857. Our hats ought to

  858. go off to every

  859. teacher in this

  860. building right now

  861. because of all the

  862. junk they have to

  863. put up with

  864. from parents

  865. who don't truly

  866. know their child

  867. and love their

  868. child and be

  869. willing to do

  870. whatever it takes

  871. for their child

  872. to be their best,

  873. Christian or not.

  874. But we as

  875. Christians,

  876. we need to set

  877. the bar high

  878. on what we are.

  879. We don't just

  880. give in to

  881. little weaknesses,

  882. but we truly

  883. seek to be

  884. faithful to the

  885. Lord, feel like

  886. it or not, and

  887. not let the fire

  888. grow out just

  889. because we're

  890. lazy, don't feel

  891. good, have a

  892. little ache and

  893. pain here or

  894. there.

  895. Paul told

  896. Timothy to deal

  897. with his

  898. treatable physical

  899. problems and not

  900. let it keep him

  901. from being faithful

  902. to God's call on

  903. his life.

  904. That wasn't

  905. Timothy's only

  906. problem.

  907. He was timid,

  908. shy, whatever

  909. you want to call

  910. it.

  911. So we're going

  912. to look at this

  913. under the category

  914. of personality,

  915. psychological,

  916. emotional issues.

  917. And again, let me

  918. say, I know there

  919. are psychological

  920. serious issues,

  921. mental illnesses.

  922. We're not talking

  923. about that in this

  924. point.

  925. Timothy was shy

  926. or timid.

  927. Look in 2 Timothy

  928. 1, 7.

  929. For God, he's

  930. telling him, fan the

  931. flame.

  932. For God gave us a

  933. spirit not of fear,

  934. but of power and

  935. love and self

  936. control.

  937. Paul says things

  938. throughout this

  939. letter to encourage

  940. Timothy, assert

  941. yourself, boy.

  942. Be a man.

  943. Be a leader.

  944. Stand up.

  945. Speak up.

  946. Confront some

  947. people.

  948. Don't just let

  949. everything go.

  950. There's false

  951. teachers who are

  952. going to destroy

  953. the church.

  954. They're going to

  955. destroy the gospel

  956. among these people

  957. if you let them.

  958. And Paul was

  959. having to tell him,

  960. you be assertive.

  961. Don't let that

  962. happen.

  963. Paul even pointed

  964. this out to the

  965. church at Corinth

  966. and asked them to

  967. take care of

  968. Timothy.

  969. I want you to look

  970. at this.

  971. I want you to think

  972. about what this is

  973. saying.

  974. Paul is writing to

  975. a church and he

  976. says, when Timothy

  977. comes, see that you

  978. put him at ease

  979. among you.

  980. Maybe they were just

  981. mean people.

  982. Or maybe Timothy

  983. was so shy that he

  984. was easily

  985. intimidated.

  986. For he is doing

  987. the work of the

  988. Lord as I am.

  989. So let no one

  990. despise him.

  991. Help him on his

  992. way in peace that he

  993. may return to me for

  994. I am expecting him

  995. with the brothers.

  996. Timothy was not a

  997. natural born leader.

  998. That's why Paul had

  999. to go to bat for

  1000. him, encourage him,

  1001. prod him like he

  1002. did.

  1003. Evidently, Timothy

  1004. did not like being

  1005. out front.

  1006. Taking on the

  1007. responsibility as a

  1008. church leader to

  1009. confront and

  1010. correct people and

  1011. issues.

  1012. But God called him

1013. to do that as a

  1014. church leader.

  1015. And Paul had

  1016. mentored him and

  1017. prepared him and

  1018. sent him to this

  1019. particular church or

  1020. group of churches in

  1021. Ephesus to do this.

1022. The point needs to be

  1023. made here that God

1024. calls us to step out

1025. of our comfort zones at

  1026. times.

  1027. I'm talking about in

  1028. terms of our

  1029. personality.

1030. He calls us to not

  1031. give in to some

  1032. personality or

  1033. psychological,

  1034. emotional weaknesses

1035. that we would cause us

  1036. to naturally want to

  1037. sort of stand back.

  1038. not do what we're

  1039. supposed to do.

  1040. You know, the most

  1041. well-known and

  1042. respected and

  1043. influential preacher of

  1044. the 19th century was

  1045. Charles Spurgeon.

  1046. He accomplished a lot

  1047. like Calvin through his

  1048. preaching, his writing,

  1049. starting in school,

  1050. orphanage, lots of

  1051. things.

  1052. You know, he battled

  1053. depression throughout his

  1054. ministry.

  1055. He was sometimes so

  1056. depressed.

  1057. He was bedridden and

  1058. unable to preach.

  1059. There were times,

  1060. periods where he just

1061. couldn't get up and go

1062. for two out of the four

  1063. Sundays of a month.

1064. He described the effect of

1065. depression that it had on

  1066. him like this.

1067. My spirits were sunken so

1068. low that I could weep by the

1069. hour like a child, and yet I

1070. knew not what I wept for.

1071. I want you to understand

  1072. what I'm saying here.

  1073. Depression can be real.

  1074. It can be devastating.

1075. This man that God used in a

1076. great way who did not want,

1077. he wasn't looking for an

1078. excuse not to do what he

  1079. was called to do.

1080. There were times he was

  1081. overwhelmed with depression

1082. and he could not function.

  1083. And what compounded his

  1084. depression sometimes, some of

1085. his biographers say, is he

  1086. felt guilty for it.

1087. He battled real, what would

  1088. be called today, clinical

  1089. depression.

1090. That if he had been in our

1091. day, he'd have been treated

  1092. with medication and other

  1093. ways for that.

1094. That's one of the reasons why

  1095. I'm pointing it out.

1096. He had some real problems.

1097. And it knocked him down at

  1098. times.

1099. But by the grace of God, he

  1100. never gave into it.

  1101. He never gave up.

1102. He was knocked down at times,

1103. but by the grace of God, he

  1104. didn't stay down.

1105. He came back time after time

  1106. after time.

  1107. It was a battle, don't

  1108. misunderstand.

1109. A battle throughout his life.

1110. But he wouldn't give up.

1111. He refused to give up.

1112. Don't ever count yourself out

  1113. because of your limitations.

  1114. God uses imperfect

  1115. people.

1116. God uses all kinds of people

1117. to accomplish his purpose in

1118. this world and in our church.

1119. And I want to, again, stress

  1120. this to parents.

1121. Don't let your children use

1122. excuses like, I'm too shy.

1123. I get nervous in front of

  1124. people.

1125. Or I just want to stay at home

  1126. all the time.

  1127. Don't let your children

1128. retreat into a world of

  1129. unreality by playing video

1130. games all the time or spending

1131. hours a day on social media.

1132. Such unreality will not help

  1133. them.

1134. But it will certainly hurt

  1135. them.

  1136. It will damage them.

  1137. Your child, your grandchild,

1138. your, the children you have

1139. influence over, they need to

1140. learn to develop healthy social

  1141. skills and where possible

1142. develop a healthy, active body.

1143. And they cannot do that inside

1144. all the time with their face

1145. buried in an iPhone, an iPad,

1146. a computer, or some other

  1147. electronic gadget.

1148. And I want to say this and

1149. make people even more mad.

1150. If you're a parent, you are in

1151. or supposed to be in control.

1152. And you can take things.

1153. You pay for it, it's yours.

  1154. It ain't theirs.

1155. We got too many weak kids today

1156. because we have too many weak

  1157. parents.

1158. You don't have, if you were a

1159. parent, your goal was not to be

  1160. their buddy.

1161. Sometimes you're going to be in

1162. their eyes so mean, you're like

  1163. the devil himself.

  1164. I don't mind the fact that I

1165. sprouted horns a lot with my

  1166. boys.

  1167. When they needed it.

1168. There are some hills worth

  1169. spilling blood on.

1170. I spill too much blood on too

  1171. many unnecessary hills.

1172. But there are some that it's

1173. worth the fight for your child's

  1174. spiritual, emotional, physical

  1175. well-being.

1176. So I want to encourage you, do

  1177. what it takes.

1178. Don't bail them out every time

  1179. they get in trouble.

  1180. Be the parent.

1181. Be the one in charge.

1182. Whatever it is, however you can

1183. have the influence that you can

  1184. have.

  1185. Some Christians allow the

  1186. spiritual fire of Christian

1187. faithfulness to die down because

1188. of their unwillingness to get out

  1189. of their comfort zone.

  1190. And they use personality,

  1191. emotional, psychological issues

1192. as excuses not to be faithful.

1193. What does your spiritual fire

  1194. look like right now?

1195. Is it a pilot light?

1196. Or is it a roaring fire?

1197. Or where is it in between?

  1198. One more question.

1199. Will you ask God to help you to

1200. fan your fire of Christian

1201. faithfulness into a flame right

  1202. now?

1203. Paul pointed out the key to

1204. fanning the flame into a real

  1205. fire in verse 7.

  1206. He says,

1207. For God gave us a spirit not of

1208. fear but of power and love and

  1209. self-control.

  1210. Timothy had God-given power.

1211. The word spirit there, look on

  1212. the screen there.

  1213. It's a little s.

1214. It may be a general reference to

1215. what God does in us to strengthen

  1216. us, our spirit.

  1217. I think it's more likely Paul's

1218. talking about the Holy Spirit there

1219. and that it should be translated

1220. with a capital S that for God gave

1221. us his spirit who indwells us as

1222. Christians and his spirit is not a

1223. spirit of fear but he is a spirit of

1224. power and love and self-control and

1225. will work that in and through us.

1226. The truth is whatever our gifts are,

1227. God supplies us with the power and

  1228. ability to use them.

  1229. Look at this verse.

1230. One of my favorite verses in all the

1231. Bible, for it is God who works in you

1232. both to will and to work for his good

  1233. pleasure.

  1234. If you're a Christian, there is a fire

  1235. within you.

1236. Whether it be bright or not, there is a

  1237. fire in you.

1238. That's the spirit of God working in you

1239. and he is the one who gives you the

1240. desire to be pleasing to God, to do

1241. God's will and gives you the ability

  1242. to do it.

1243. When we use our gifts in the power of

1244. the Holy Spirit, we will not be

  1245. crippled by fear.

1246. Paul says we'll serve God with power,

  1247. love and control.

1248. I want to wind this up by something

1249. Tommy Lee, professor at Southwestern

1250. Seminary when I was there years ago.

1251. He does a good job of describing what

1252. it means for Christians to fan the

1253. fire of Christian faithfulness to a

  1254. flame.

  1255. Look at it.

1256. Because Timothy had genuine faith,

1257. Paul urged him to set it ablaze.

1258. The expression fan into flame describes

1259. the act of rekindling the embers of a

  1260. dying fire.

1261. The command does not imply that Timothy

1262. had let his spiritual flame go out.

1263. It's an appeal for a continual, vigorous

1264. use of his spiritual gifts.

1265. Rekindling his gifts would involve

1266. fervent prayer, obedience to God's word,

1267. and demonstration of an active faith.

1268. If your spiritual fire is not a roaring

1269. blaze right now, I want to encourage you

1270. to go to God in prayer, spend time with

1271. him and his word on a regular basis and

1272. just ask him, fan the flame.

1273. It'll never happen if you don't spend time

1274. regularly, daily with the Lord in meaningful

1275. prayer, just talking to God, reading his word,

  1276. listening to him.

1277. I want to encourage you also to find a

1278. Christian friend to talk about the things

  1279. of God with.

  1280. Pray for each other.

  1281. Encourage each other.

  1282. Challenge each other.

  1283. Find a friend.

1284. Make a new friend to do this with.

1285. It could be you do it with your spouse.

1286. It could be you do it with an older child.

  1287. Your parent.

  1288. Find somebody.

1289. And then start using what God's given you.

1290. Your talents, your gifts, your abilities.

1291. In some kind of ministry that will truly honor

1292. God and help us as his church to serve his

  1293. purpose.

1294. Ask God to help you know what you need to do to

1295. fan the flame of Christian faithfulness now so that it

1296. will burn more brightly this coming week.

  1297. Let's pray together.

1298. Father, show us now how we should respond.

1299. Help us to see, to be certain, and then to respond that way.

1300. Father, if there are people in this room who there is no fire

1301. within them because they do not know you, they don't have a

1302. relationship with Jesus, help them to see that clearly, but to

1303. know if they will admit their need, turn from their sin and trust

1304. Jesus, call upon him to save them, that you will light the fire

  1305. right now.

1306. You will change their life.

1307. Help them to do that.

1308. Let's just all, in an attitude of prayer, listen to the Lord and

1309. respond to him however he's speaking to you.

1310. If I could pray with you here at the front, I'd be happy to do

1311. that during these next few minutes.

1312. Let's just respond to the Lord.

  1313. Thank you.
