  1. I first noticed the title of this musical, Almost There.

  2. I thought about how Jesus once told a Jewish teacher

  3. that he was almost there

  4. in terms of entering the kingdom of God.

  5. It took place in the context of several Jewish leaders

  6. basically attacking Jesus.

  7. They were bombarding him with questions,

  8. trying to confuse him.

  9. Trying to make him look bad.

  10. Well, Mark, the Gospel of Mark tells us

  11. how a scribe, a scholarly teacher,

  12. he was involved.

  13. He asked Jesus a question about

  14. what's the greatest commandment?

  15. I want you to look with me on the screen

  16. how Jesus answered.

  17. Jesus answered,

  18. the most important is,

  19. hear, O Israel,

  20. the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  21. And you shall love the Lord your God

  22. with all your heart and with all your soul

  23. and with all your mind and with all your strength.

  24. The second is this,

  25. you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  26. There is no other commandment greater than these.

  27. Now, when that scribe heard the answer,

  28. something changed.

  29. The light came on for him.

  30. And he responded,

  31. not as a critic,

  32. but as an honest seeker

  33. who understood that Jesus had spoken truth.

  34. Look at what he said.

  35. And the scribe said to him,

  36. you are right, teacher.

  37. You have truly said that he is one

  38. and there is no other besides him.

  39. And to love him with all the heart

  40. and with all the understanding

  41. and with all the strength

  42. and to love one's neighbor as oneself

  43. is much more than all

  44. whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

  45. He's on board with Jesus.

  46. He understands.

  47. Jesus is speaking words of truth,

  48. of wisdom.

  49. Well, Jesus took it that way.

  50. Look at how he responded to this scribe.

  51. And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely,

  52. he said to him,

  53. you are not far from the kingdom of God.

  54. Jesus was telling him in effect,

  55. you're almost there.

  56. You're almost in the kingdom of God.

  57. Now, when Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God

  58. throughout his ministry,

  59. he was talking about more than a future kingdom,

  60. sort of like what we would think about heaven.

  61. Jesus was talking about,

  62. when he spoke about the kingdom of God,

  63. living under the kingdom of God,

  64. living under God's authority.

  65. Jesus was talking about living as a follower of himself

  66. as a person's Lord and Savior,

  67. and living under God's authority.

  68. When Jesus told this man that he was not far from the kingdom of God,

  69. he was saying two things.

  70. Look with me.

  71. It was a word of encouragement.

  72. Think about it.

  73. You are not far from the kingdom of God.

  74. You are almost there.

  75. Why would he say that?

  76. Well, that man believed correctly.

  77. He believed that Jesus was speaking the truth.

  78. He believed that God was more concerned

  79. with us having a heart of love for him

  80. and people

  81. than just following a bunch of rules of a religion.

  82. This man was almost there

  83. because he believed the truth.

  84. He had some right beliefs.

  85. But almost there is not there.

  86. He was not a part of the kingdom of God

  87. because he was not trusting Jesus.

  88. He was not a follower of Jesus.

  89. I am confident

  90. that almost everyone in this room today,

  91. you believe what the Bible says

  92. about Jesus coming into this world,

  93. which is what we celebrate at Christmas.

  94. I have no doubt

  95. that just about everyone in this room,

  96. you believe the Christmas story

  97. as spelled out in Scripture.

  98. You believe

  99. the things that we have

  100. been singing about

  101. or heard sung

  102. about Jesus.

  103. Such beliefs,

  104. thinking rightly

  105. according to the truth of Scripture,

  106. makes us

  107. almost there

  108. in terms of being a part of the kingdom

  109. because you cannot

  110. become a follower of Jesus

  111. without knowing

  112. who he is

  113. and the truth about

  114. why he came.

  115. But

  116. until a person

  117. puts

  118. their trust

  119. in Jesus

  120. as their own Savior

  121. and Lord,

  122. you remain

  123. almost there,

  124. not

  125. there

  126. in the kingdom of God.

  127. And so that makes

  128. what Jesus said

  129. more than just a word

  130. of encouragement.

  131. It was a word

  132. of warning.

  133. You are not far

  134. from the kingdom of God,

  135. but you are not

  136. there.

  137. If you're not there,

  138. you are outside

  139. the kingdom of God.

  140. Jesus was telling

  141. this well-informed

  142. teacher

  143. that it was not enough

  144. to just believe

  145. correct doctrine,

  146. right facts

  147. about God.

  148. It's not enough

  149. just to say,

  150. I believe the Bible's true.

  151. Jesus was telling him,

  152. it's not enough

  153. for you to just

  154. have a favorable

  155. impression of me.

  156. And that applies

  157. to everyone.

  158. Believing all

  159. the right things,

  160. the right facts

  161. about God,

  162. about Jesus,

  163. about the Bible,

  164. it is very important.

  165. And I'm not

  166. in any way

  167. downplaying it.

  168. But it's not enough

  169. for us just to have

  170. this intellectual knowledge,

  171. this factual information

  172. and be a Christian.

  173. James tells us

  174. that demons believe

  175. the facts about God.

  176. Look at this

  177. from James chapter 2.

    James 2 chapter mention

  178. You believe that God

  179. is one,

  180. you do well.

  181. Even the demons

  182. believe and

  183. shudder.

  184. They tremble.

  185. The only way

  186. that we can be right

  187. with God

  188. and a part of His kingdom,

  189. a part of His family,

  190. now

  191. and forever.

  192. It's to have our faith,

  193. our trust,

  194. our confidence

  195. in Jesus

  196. as our Savior.

  197. And if we do that,

  198. we'll recognize

  199. that He really is

  200. King Jesus,

  201. the Lord,

  202. and we'll submit

  203. to Him,

  204. to His authority

  205. and really seek

  206. to follow Him,

  207. be faithful followers

  208. of Him.

  209. If a person

  210. does not know God,

  211. through a personal

  212. relationship

  213. with Jesus,

  214. it doesn't matter

  215. how close

  216. they are.

  217. For a person

  218. to be

  219. or for a person

  220. to die

  221. almost there,

  222. believing a lot

  223. of what the Bible

  224. says.

  225. For a person

  226. to die

  227. like that

  228. almost there.

  229. Or for a person

  230. to believe nothing

  231. and shake

  232. his fist

  233. at God,

  234. the end result

  235. will be the same.

  236. They will be

  237. eternally separated

  238. from God

  239. in hell.

  240. And we all need

  241. to let this sink in

  242. because it applies

  243. to us,

  244. to our family members,

  245. to our friends,

  246. to everyone.

  247. As we come together

  248. this morning

  249. to celebrate

  250. the birth of Jesus,

  251. the coming

  252. of God's Son

  253. into this world,

  254. I want to encourage

  255. you to think

  256. about yourself,

  257. about your relationship

  258. with Jesus.

  259. Make sure

  260. that you are

  261. now

  262. in the kingdom

  263. of God,

  264. which means

  265. that you are living

  266. under His authority.

  267. You are truly

  268. following Jesus,

  269. your Lord.

  270. You know,

  271. the only way

  272. for anyone

  273. to know

  274. that they have

  275. a right relationship

  276. with God,

  277. the only way

  278. for anyone

  279. to know

  280. for a fact

  281. that they

  282. are a part

  283. of the kingdom

  284. now

  285. is to have

  286. that true

  287. faith,

  288. trust,

  289. confidence,

  290. commitment,

  291. love

  292. for Jesus.

  293. He is the way

  294. to the Father.

  295. Jesus made it clear

  296. on one occasion.

  297. He said to him,

  298. I am the way

  299. and the truth

  300. and the life.

  301. No one comes

  302. to the Father

  303. except through me.

  304. That last sentence,

  305. no one comes

  306. to the Father

  307. except through me,

  308. also can be said,

  309. anyone can come

  310. to the Father

  311. through me,

  312. through Jesus.

  313. If you are not

  314. a Christian,

  315. you can come

  316. to faith in Jesus

  317. right now.

  318. Admit your need

  319. that you're not.

  320. Turn from your sin.

  321. Change your mind.

  322. Put your trust

  323. in Jesus

  324. as your Savior.

  325. Trust him

  326. that when he died

  327. on the cross,

  328. which is why

  329. he came into this world,

  330. that he was dying

  331. for you,

  332. paying the penalty

  333. for your sins.

  334. If you know Christ

  335. as your Lord

  336. and Savior,

  337. let this be a time

  338. of worshiping him,

  339. thanking him,

  340. renewing your commitment

  341. to him

  342. as your king.

  343. I also want to encourage

  344. Christians in this room,

  345. if you have family members,

  346. friends,

  347. people you work with,

  348. people you go to school with

  349. who are not Christians,

  350. there is no better time

  351. than this season,

  352. the Christmas season,

  353. for you to talk with them

  354. about their relationship

  355. with the Lord.

  356. I encourage you

  357. to ask God

  358. to help you

  359. get prepared

  360. to share the gospel

  361. with them

  362. and ask him

  363. to prepare them

  364. and work through

  365. your love,

  366. your friendship,

  367. your sharing the gospel,

  368. the call of them,

  369. that person you love

  370. and care about,

  371. the faith in Jesus.

  372. Would you pray with me?

  373. Father,

  374. help all of us

  375. in this room

  376. being here today

  377. to worship Jesus,

  378. celebrate the true meaning

  379. of Christmas.

  380. Help us all

  381. to think about

  382. where we stand

  383. in relationship

  384. in relationship

  385. to being

  386. in your kingdom,

  387. in your family.

  388. Father,

  389. for anyone in this room

  390. who does not know Christ,

  391. call them to faith

  392. right now.

  393. Do that miraculous work

  394. in them right now.

  395. Open their eyes

  396. to see Jesus

  397. as he really is,

  398. your son

  399. who died on the cross

  400. for their sin.

  401. Father,

  402. help all of us

  403. right now

  404. to evaluate

  405. just how faithfully

  406. we are living

  407. under your authority,

  408. under King Jesus.

  409. And if there's changes

  410. that we need to make,

  411. help us to make them

  412. now.

  413. And in an attitude

  414. of prayer,

  415. let's all just listen

  416. to the Lord

  417. and respond to him

  418. in the way

  419. that we need to.

  420. I'd be happy

  421. to pray with you

  422. here at the front

  423. in the next few minutes.

  424. Let's just listen

  425. to the Lord

  426. prayerfully,

  427. carefully,

  428. and respond to him.
