  1. What has Christmas cost you so far?

  2. Many of us will say, too much.

  3. And I'm sure some will say, way too much

  4. when the credit card bill comes in.

  5. When we think about the cost of Christmas,

  6. as I just asked the question,

  7. I'm assuming that most of us think in terms of what it costs,

  8. in terms of the gifts we've bought.

  9. Maybe some trips you have or will take.

  10. Our decorations, food, and all these kind of things.

  11. Well, I want us to take a few minutes this morning

  12. to think about the cost of Christmas in a different way.

  13. You know, the real story of Christmas is found in the Bible,

  14. and it's all about the coming of Jesus into this world,

  15. the birth of God's Son.

  16. When we think about the first Christmas,

  17. or what the Bible teaches us about the coming of Jesus,

  18. we find that it was very costly.

  19. It was first costly to Mary.

  20. I want you to think with me.

  21. The cost of Christmas for Mary.

  22. It cost her her reputation in a big way.

  23. Look at what the Scripture says in Matthew chapter 1.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  24. Now, the angel coming to Mary and announcing her

  25. that God had chosen her to be the mother of Jesus

  26. is found in Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  27. Matthew 1 tells us about the problem

  28. that that immediately caused.

  29. Now, the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  30. When His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph,

  31. before they came together,

  32. she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

  33. And her husband Joseph, being a just man

  34. and unwilling to put her to shame,

  35. resolved to divorce her quietly.

  36. Now, you think these are real people.

  37. Young woman, 16, 17 years old maybe.

  38. Joseph, a little bit older.

  39. They're more than what we consider to be engaged.

  40. It was a legally binding betrothal.

  41. And it was serious to break it.

  42. That's why the word divorce is used here.

  43. Well, when Mary first told Joseph the situation,

  44. he didn't believe her.

  45. Would you?

  46. It's beyond belief.

  47. No one would.

  48. And so, he was a good man

  49. because he didn't just explode in rage.

  50. Look at what the Scripture says.

  51. He was a just man, righteous man,

  52. and unwilling to put her to shame.

  53. And so, he resolved to divorce her quietly.

  54. In his mind, she had been unfaithful.

  55. He was not going to marry her,

  56. but he was going to honorably part ways.

  57. Well, it took a supernatural intervention of an angel

  58. to change Joseph's mind,

  59. to convince him that Mary had not been unfaithful.

  60. Look at it.

  61. The next two verses, verses 20 and 21.

  62. But as he considered these things,

  63. behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream,

  64. saying, Joseph, son of David,

  65. do not fear to take Mary as your wife,

  66. for that which is conceived in her

  67. is from the Holy Spirit.

  68. She will bear a son,

  69. and you shall call his name Jesus,

  70. for he will save his people from their sins.

  71. Joseph believed the angel.

  72. No one else would have,

  73. because no one else received the supernatural revelation.

  74. In the eyes of everyone except Joseph,

  75. Mary was an immoral woman.

  76. And so for Mary to be chosen by God

  77. for this most special work,

  78. bearing his son,

  79. it ruined her reputation.

  80. And she knew it from the get-go.

  81. Well, how did she respond?

  82. Well, look with me if you would.

  83. It'll be on the screen.

  84. Luke chapter 1, verse 38.

    Luke 1:38

  85. Luke 1, 38.

  86. Now the story of God coming to her,

  87. the angel telling her she'd been chosen,

  88. is before this verse.

  89. And after he said all this,

  90. this is how Mary responded.

  91. Behold, I am the servant of the Lord.

  92. Let it be to me according to your word.

  93. She finds out she's been chosen by God.

  94. to miraculously conceive baby Jesus in her womb.

  95. And her response to such a public scandal,

  96. she trusted God.

  97. I am the server of the Lord.

  98. Let it be to me according to your word.

  99. She willingly accepted God's call

  100. to be the mother of Jesus,

  101. even though it would cost her publicly dearly.

  102. But what I want us to see here is

  103. she was willing to pay that high cost

  104. to be faithful to do God's will.

  105. Mary was the first to discover

  106. how costly Christmas can be.

  107. But she was not alone.

  108. Look next, the cost of Christmas for Joseph.

  109. It was costly to him in several ways.

  110. First, it cost Joseph his reputation

  111. just as well as Mary.

  112. Same reasons.

  113. But also it cost Joseph social relationships,

  114. job security, financial stability,

  115. because shortly after Jesus was born,

  116. he had to leave home.

  117. He had to leave where he worked,

  118. his carpentry business,

  119. and go to a foreign place.

  120. Look at how the scripture describes this

  121. in Matthew chapter 2.

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  122. An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream

  123. and said,

  124. Rise, take the child and his mother,

  125. and flee to Egypt,

  126. and remain there until I tell you,

  127. for Herod is about to search for the child

  128. to destroy him.

  129. And he rose and took the child and his mother by night

  130. and departed to Egypt.

  131. Joseph acted on what God told him.

  132. Just like Mary,

  133. he was willing to pay the cost of obeying God.

  134. Look back now at how Joseph responded to the angel

  135. when the angel told him all about Mary

  136. and the child she had conceived.

  137. Look at how Joseph responded.

  138. When Joseph woke from sleep,

  139. he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.

  140. He took his wife,

  141. but knew her not until she had given birth to a son.

  142. And he called his name Jesus.

  143. The first Christmas was costly

  144. to both Mary and Joseph.

  145. But I want us to understand,

  146. it was even more costly for Jesus.

  147. Look at the cost of Christmas for Jesus.

  148. Before he ever came into this world,

  149. the Son of God had always existed.

  150. It's a mystery.

  151. We can't really wrap our minds around the fact

  152. that God exists,

  153. our one God exists as three persons,

  154. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  155. Jesus left the glory of heaven

  156. that he had always enjoyed

  157. with the Father and the Spirit

  158. to come into this world to save us.

  159. Paul describes that in Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  160. Look at it.

  161. He's actually writing to this church

  162. about how they need to humble themselves,

  163. serve one another,

  164. and he gives Jesus as the example.

  165. Have this mind among yourselves,

  166. which is yours in Christ Jesus,

  167. who, though he was in the form of God,

  168. did not count equality with God

  169. a thing to be grasped

  170. or a thing to be held on to,

  171. but emptied himself

  172. by taking the form of a servant,

  173. being born in the likeness of men,

  174. and being found in human form,

  175. he humbled himself

  176. by becoming obedient to the point of death,

  177. even death on a cross.

  178. To come into this world,

  179. Jesus laid aside the glory

  180. he had always experienced and enjoyed

  181. in heaven as the Son.

  182. He didn't cease to become God

  183. when he came into this world.

  184. He just became man,

  185. the God-man,

  186. but he had to lay aside

  187. some of the honor and the glory

  188. that he had known in heaven.

  189. But I want you to note

  190. in the scripture you see on the screen there,

  191. he did that for a purpose.

  192. Jesus was born to die

  193. for sinful people like you and me

  194. so that we could be forgiven,

  195. made right with God,

  196. become a child of God.

  197. But you know,

  198. what Jesus has done

  199. in coming to the world to save us,

  200. dying on the cross as he did,

  201. we have to respond to that.

  202. We've got to respond by

  203. admitting that we are sinful people,

  204. we've offended God,

  205. we've rebelled against him,

  206. and we need a Savior.

  207. No one's ever going to become a Christian

  208. until they sense that need

  209. and are willing to change their mind

  210. about how they're living.

  211. Admit their sin,

  212. turn from it,

  213. and put their trust in Jesus

  214. and him alone

  215. for their salvation.

  216. Have you done that?

  217. Have you called upon Jesus to save you?

  218. Is he truly the Lord of your life

  219. as you are celebrating his birth this year?

  220. Christmas was truly costly to Jesus.

  221. In fact,

  222. the coming of Jesus has always been costly

  223. for everyone associated with Jesus.

  224. That leads to one question

  225. that we need to answer.

  226. What has Christmas cost you?

  227. Christmas means Christ has come.

  228. And when Christ comes into our lives

  229. as our Lord and Savior,

  230. it will cost us something.

  231. And that's something that Jesus talked about,

  232. taught, explained on many occasions

  233. as you read through the Gospels.

  234. Here's a good summary

  235. of the kind of things Jesus talked about,

  236. costly commitment.

  237. It's from Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  238. And he said to all,

  239. If anyone would come after me,

  240. let him deny himself

  241. and take up his cross daily

  242. and follow me.

  243. For whoever would save his life

  244. will lose it.

  245. But whoever loses his life

  246. for my sake

  247. will save it.

  248. Jesus calls each one of us

  249. who call ourselves his follower,

  250. every one of us

  251. who calls ourselves a Christian,

  252. Jesus calls us to costly commitment.

  253. And in our country today,

  254. such commitment

  255. is becoming even more costly

  256. all the time.

  257. If you believe that the Bible

  258. is truly the Word of God,

  259. the perfect, without error,

  260. Word of God,

  261. and that it is

  262. the authority

  263. for what you should believe

  264. and how you should live,

  265. you may pay a price for that

  266. in today's world.

  267. In some settings.

  268. For some people,

  269. maybe in a home.

  270. For some where you work.

  271. For some around the people

  272. that you call friends.

  273. For many years,

  274. Chick-fil-A

  275. has publicly stated

  276. that their business

  277. was built on

  278. biblical principles.

  279. A few years ago,

  280. they openly supported

  281. traditional

  282. biblical marriage

  283. and they did it

  284. in a positive way.

  285. They got some flack

  286. for that.

  287. And Dan Cathy,

  288. their CEO,

  289. son of the founder,

  290. Truett,

  291. he emphasized,

  292. we do believe

  293. in biblical values,

  294. traditional,

  295. biblical marriage.

  296. But we don't discriminate

  297. against anyone

  298. who doesn't believe that.

  299. We don't fire people

  300. who don't believe

  301. what we believe.

  302. And we certainly don't

  303. prohibit everybody

  304. from coming to Chick-fil-A.

  305. We are open

  306. to all people.

  307. We hold the biblical values,

  308. but we embrace people

  309. and we want to serve people.

  310. And Cathy and Chick-fil-A

  311. was commended,

  312. have been,

  313. for having such a stance.

  314. But over the last few months,

  315. several stories

  316. from multiple sources

  317. have reported

  318. that the Chick-fil-A

  319. organization

  320. has backed off

  321. their strong commitment

  322. to biblical values.

  323. They have apparently

  324. decided to be

  325. more politically correct

  326. and not offend

  327. liberal groups

  328. who oppose

  329. biblical values.

  330. According to several reports,

  331. and I know a lot of you

  332. are familiar with this,

  333. Chick-fil-A

  334. will no longer support

  335. evangelical organizations

  336. like the Salvation Army

  337. and the Fellowship

  338. of Christian Athletes

  339. because these organizations

  340. affirm biblical values

  341. such as

  342. traditional marriage.

  343. Chick-fil-A

  344. will now support

  345. more liberal organizations

  346. that are

  347. LGBT friendly.

  348. It appears

  349. that Chick-fil-A

  350. has chosen

  351. to be more concerned

  352. about

  353. pleasing people.

  354. and making

  355. profits

  356. instead of

  357. pleasing God

  358. and paying the cost

  359. of being unfaithful

  360. or being

  361. faithful.

  362. Now,

  363. I don't want you

  364. to misinterpret

  365. these comments.

  366. I'm not throwing

  367. rocks

  368. at Chick-fil-A.

  369. I'm not advocating

  370. boycotting

  371. Chick-fil-A.

  372. Where in the world

  373. would you eat?

  374. Be careful

  375. when you say

  376. you're going

  377. to boycott

  378. this company

  379. or that company.

  380. You'll starve

  381. to death.

  382. You'll walk.

  383. You won't have

  384. electricity.

  385. You won't have

  386. a telephone,

  387. smartphone.

  388. If you're going

  389. to start boycotting

  390. organizations,

  391. businesses,

  392. because they don't

  393. adhere to

  394. Christian values.

  395. The reason

  396. I'm singling

  397. out Chick-fil-A

  398. is because

  399. since their

  400. founding,

  401. they have

  402. publicly stated

  403. we adhere

  404. to biblical

  405. principles,

  406. biblical values.

  407. But under

  408. the pressure

  409. of today's

  410. liberal groups,

  411. they have

  412. changed.

  413. They have

  414. compromised.

  415. compromised.

  416. It's hard

  417. not to

  418. compromise

  419. in today's

  420. world.

  421. And so

  422. before we

  423. pompously

  424. explode

  425. against Chick-fil-A,

  426. let's make

  427. sure that we

  428. are not

  429. compromising

  430. in our

  431. commitment

  432. to Christ,

  433. in order

  434. to avoid

  435. paying the

  436. cost

  437. of being

  438. faithful.

  439. Ask yourself

  440. this question.

  441. How have I

  442. shown my

  443. willingness to

  444. pay the

  445. price required

  446. to be

  447. obedient to

  448. God?

  449. We can see

  450. how Mary

  451. paid the

  452. price.

  453. It cost her

  454. reputation.

  455. It cost

  456. Joseph social

  457. standing,

  458. financial security.

  459. it cost

  460. Jesus the

  461. glory and

  462. honor of

  463. heaven.

  464. Are you

  465. willing to

  466. say yes

  467. to whatever

  468. it is God

  469. calls you to

  470. do or to

  471. take a stand

  472. upon?

  473. In your

  474. relationships,

  475. in your

  476. work,

  477. among the

  478. people that

  479. you associate

  480. with?

  481. faith.

  482. You know,

  483. the key to

  484. making this

  485. kind of

  486. commitment is

  487. found in

  488. what Jesus

  489. said about

  490. us taking

  491. our cross,

  492. taking up

  493. our cross

  494. daily.

  495. That means

  496. we've got to

  497. die to

  498. self in

  499. terms of

  500. always having

  501. it my way.

  502. We've got to

  503. die to my

  504. comfort,

  505. doing just

  506. what I want

  507. to do,

  508. when I want

  509. to do it.

  510. It also means

  511. we've got to

  512. learn to trust

  513. God.

  514. God,

  515. that His

  516. way is not

  517. only the

  518. right way,

  519. but it's

  520. the best

  521. way for

  522. us as His

  523. children.

  524. And if we

  525. trust God

  526. like this,

  527. we will

  528. obey Him,

  529. even if it

  530. does cost

  531. us our

  532. reputation,

  533. some social

  534. standing,

  535. financial

  536. security,

  537. or what we

  538. consider earthly

  539. glory.

  540. Christmas

  541. means that

  542. Christ has

  543. come.

  544. He's come

  545. into this

  546. world.

  547. But let me

  548. ask you,

  549. has Jesus

  550. Christ come

  551. into your

  552. life as

  553. Savior and

  554. the reigning

  555. Lord of

  556. your life?

  557. And final

  558. thought, is

  559. there room in

  560. your heart

  561. right now?

  562. For God to

  563. write His

  564. story for

  565. you and

  566. where you are

  567. right now,

  568. even if it

  569. comes at a

  570. very high

  571. cost.

  572. Let's pray

  573. together.

  574. Father,

  575. help us to

  576. take seriously

  577. the fact that

  578. the coming of

  579. Jesus is

  580. costly,

  581. always has

  582. been,

  583. always will

  584. be.

  585. Help us,

  586. Father, to be

  587. willing to

  588. make the

  589. wholehearted

  590. commitment to

  591. trust and

  592. obey you,

  593. faithfully

  594. follow Jesus

  595. wherever that

  596. may lead and

  597. whatever that

  598. may cost.

  599. And let's

  600. just in an

  601. attitude of

  602. prayer right

  603. now, listen

  604. to the Lord

  605. and respond to

  606. Him as we

  607. know He wants

  608. us to.

  609. I'd be happy to

  610. pray with you

  611. here at the

  612. front if that

  613. would be helpful

  614. to you right

  615. now.

  616. And I

  617. strongly want

  618. to encourage

  619. you, don't

  620. let this

  621. Christmas season

  622. pass.

  623. without

  624. coming to

  625. know Jesus

  626. as your

  627. Lord and

  628. your Savior

  629. and making

  630. Him first

  631. and foremost

  632. in your life.

  633. Let's pray

  634. and respond

  635. to the Lord.
