  1. And Brett.

  2. Ronald Reagan was my favorite president.

  3. Of his many strengths, he was the great communicator.

  4. One of my favorite Reagan quotes is this.

  5. The most terrifying words of the English language are,

  6. I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

  7. One of the most needed reminders in election years

  8. was Reagan's quote of Thomas Jefferson.

  9. Reagan said, Thomas Jefferson said,

  10. a government big enough to give you everything you want

  11. is strong enough to take everything you have.

  12. And that's a socialistic government.

  13. One of Reagan's, what I think one of his greatest quotes,

  14. one of his most admirable quotes,

  15. comes from his farewell address

  16. at the end of his eight-year presidency.

  17. He said, whatever else history may say about me

  18. when I'm gone, I hope it will record

  19. that I appealed to your best hopes,

  20. not your worst fears,

  21. to your confidence rather than your doubts.

  22. We're going to look at a passage of Scripture this morning

  23. where Paul appeals to our best hopes

  24. and our confidence,

  25. if we are Christians,

  26. united to Jesus Christ by faith.

  27. It's found in Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  28. If you've been here the last three weeks,

  29. you know we've started this new year

  30. with a study of Colossians 3, verses 1 through 17.

    Colossians 3:1–17

  31. I'm calling it God's goals for you,

  32. not just this year,

  33. but this hour, this day, this year,

  34. and really every year.

  35. I want us to look at it again.

  36. God's ultimate goal,

  37. summarized in one verse.

  38. For those whom he foreknew,

  39. he also predestined to be conformed

  40. to the image of his Son.

  41. And what that means is that God is working

  42. in the life of every Christian

  43. through everything that happens.

  44. We did a study in my Sunday school class this morning

  45. to point out God is working through your spouse,

  46. or put it a different way.

  47. God is using you in the life of your spouse

  48. to help him or her grow

  49. in the development of Christlike character.

  50. God uses everything,

  51. good and bad,

  52. strengths and weaknesses,

  53. all kinds of people.

  54. But God's goal in your life and mine

  55. as his children

  56. is to shape and mold us

  57. so that we'll be more and more like Jesus

  58. in terms of our character.

  59. Now Colossians 3 helps us see

  60. some of the ways that God works to accomplish this.

  61. We're looking at this passage

  62. in terms of three goals that God has for us.

  63. Number one,

  64. be mindful of who you are in Christ.

  65. We've got to know who we are

  66. by virtue of our faith,

  67. our union,

  68. our oneness with Jesus,

  69. what that means for us.

  70. Goal two,

  71. don't be who you are

  72. apart from Christ.

  73. Don't be who you are

  74. according to the desires of your sinful nature.

  75. We've looked at that for two weeks.

  76. Let's start now looking at goal three.

  77. Become more like Christ every day.

  78. I want us to look this morning

  79. just at verses 12 through 14

  80. of Colossians 3.

  81. Let's read it together.

  82. Put on then,

  83. as God's chosen ones,

  84. holy and beloved,

  85. compassionate hearts,

  86. kindness,

  87. humility,

  88. meekness,

  89. and patience,

  90. bearing with one another,

  91. and if one has a complaint against another,

  92. forgiving each other,

  93. as the Lord has forgiven you,

  94. so you must also forgive.

  95. And above all these,

  96. put on love,

  97. which binds everything together

  98. in perfect harmony.

  99. What we're going to start looking at today

  100. is how this passage shows us

  101. why we must cooperate with God

  102. as He works to make us more like Jesus every day.

  103. First, we are God's special people.

  104. If we're Christians,

  105. and that's a big if,

  106. if we're Christians,

  107. if we are trusting in Him,

  108. united to Him,

  109. one with Him,

  110. by virtue of our union with Jesus,

  111. we are God's special people.

  112. Look at how Paul describes it in verse 12.

  113. God's chosen ones,

  114. holy and beloved.

  115. This is the reason why I said this passage appeals to

  116. our best hopes

  117. and confidence

  118. as Christians united to Christ.

  119. Paul is telling us who we are in Christ

  120. to motivate us

  121. to put forth the effort

  122. to cooperate with the Spirit of God

  123. who indwells us

  124. and actually develop Christian character.

  125. Let's look at what he's talking about here.

  126. We're God's special people.

  127. Why?

  128. Why would I say that?

  129. Well, we're God's chosen people.

  130. God's chosen ones in verse 12.

  131. It's translated,

  132. we have a lot of different translations

  133. every time we gather.

  134. Some of you have one that'll say,

  135. the elect of God.

  136. I want to take a quick look

  137. at how Paul describes

  138. God's gracious work of election

  139. throughout his letters.

  140. You know, Paul does this a lot.

  141. Paul emphasizes how God works in us

  142. unilaterally.

  143. God chooses us.

  144. He regenerates us.

  145. He gives us the ability to believe.

  146. Faith is a gift from God,

  147. Ephesians 2, 8 and 9 tells us.

  148. Well, let's think about how

  149. God goes about this.

  150. First, we were chosen

  151. before we were ever born.

  152. In Ephesians 1 and verse 4,

  153. Paul writes,

  154. he chose us in him

  155. before the foundation of the world.

  156. Before we could ever do anything

  157. that might possibly make God

  158. want to choose us,

  159. he already had.

  160. Before the foundation of the world,

  161. before he created anything,

  162. before we were ever even a possibility,

  163. God chose us

  164. in Christ

  165. to be his children.

  166. Charles Spurgeon described

  167. what we all know is true.

  168. He said,

  169. God must have chosen me

  170. before I came into the world.

  171. He certainly would not

  172. have done so afterward.

  173. You know,

  174. there's some of us

  175. probably might reword that

  176. and say

  177. that

  178. our spouse

  179. chose me

  180. before I actually lived

  181. with him or her

  182. because if they had to live

  183. with me first,

  184. they wouldn't have chosen me.

  185. We were chosen

  186. before we ever did

  187. or thought anything

  188. before the foundation

  189. of the world.

  190. Number two,

  191. we were chosen

  192. according to God's grace

  193. and purpose,

  194. not because of anything

  195. we had

  196. or would have done.

  197. Why did God choose

  198. who he chose?

  199. Why did God choose you?

  200. Why did he choose me?

  201. Within him,

  202. according to his

  203. gracious

  204. choice,

  205. according to his

  206. love,

  207. according to his

  208. purpose or his plan.

  209. Look at how Paul

  210. says this to Timothy

  211. in 2 Timothy 1,

  212. who saved us

  213. and called us

  214. to a holy

  215. calling,

  216. not because of

  217. our works,

  218. but because of

  219. his own

  220. purpose

  221. and grace,

  222. which he gave us

  223. in Christ Jesus

  224. before the

  225. ages

  226. began.

  227. It's

  228. just

  229. within God

  230. to do this

  231. according to his

  232. grace and his

  233. purpose.

  234. Now,

  235. third thing I want

  236. us to see,

  237. we were chosen

  238. and called

  239. by God

  240. to respond

  241. to the gospel.

  242. Some people

  243. have a problem

  244. with the

  245. doctrine of election,

  246. but I heard a great

  247. theologian say

  248. one time,

  249. that

  250. if you're a

  251. Christian,

  252. you believe the

  253. Bible is the

  254. word of God,

  255. you have to

  256. believe in election.

  257. Rudy Gray

  258. said that.

  259. I'm serious.

  260. And it's

  261. true.

  262. You can't

  263. say,

  264. I don't

  265. believe anything

  266. that the

  267. Bible teaches

  268. without saying,

  269. I reject what

  270. the Bible is

  271. teaching.

  272. Now,

  273. you may have a

  274. different kind

  275. of way of

  276. looking at it,

  277. understanding it,

  278. interpreting it,

  279. but you've got to

  280. believe it.

  281. But some

  282. people can go

  283. to seed,

  284. go too far

  285. in dwelling on

  286. God's sovereignty

  287. to the neglect

  288. of what the

  289. Bible says

  290. in many other

  291. places about

  292. we are responsible

  293. to repent of

  294. our sin and

  295. put our faith

  296. in Jesus

  297. and call upon

  298. Him to save

  299. us.

  300. God's choosing

  301. and our

  302. believing,

  303. they're not

  304. opposed to

  305. one another.

  306. There's a lot

  307. of mystery in

  308. it, but they

  309. go hand in

  310. hand.

  311. There's no

  312. stronger statement

  313. in the Bible

  314. than Romans

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  315. chapter 9 on

  316. the sovereignty

  317. of God,

  318. predestination,

  319. election,

  320. and then the

  321. next chapter,

  322. Romans 10.

  323. There's no

  324. stronger statement

  325. in the Bible

  326. that whoever

  327. will call upon

  328. the name of

  329. the Lord

  330. will be saved.

  331. And it goes

  332. on to say,

  333. we have a

  334. responsibility to

  335. take the gospel

  336. to people

  337. throughout the

  338. world.

  339. And if we

  340. don't take

  341. the gospel,

  342. they won't

  343. hear.

  344. If they don't

  345. hear, how

  346. can they

  347. believe?

  348. How can

  349. they be

  350. saved if

  351. they don't

  352. hear?

  353. So God

  354. is sovereign

  355. in salvation.

  356. Election is

  357. true.

  358. We are

  359. responsible

  360. to believe

  361. the gospel,

  362. to turn

  363. from our

  364. sin,

  365. to trust

  366. Jesus,

  367. to call

  368. upon him

  369. to save

  370. us.

  371. They go

  372. together.

  373. And what I

  374. want to see

  375. here, we were

  376. chosen and

  377. called by God

  378. to respond to

  379. the gospel.

  380. Look at how

  381. Paul says

  382. this in 1

  383. Thessalonians

  384. 1.

  385. For we

  386. know,

  387. brothers loved

  388. by God,

  389. that he has

  390. chosen you.

  391. How do you

  392. know that?

  393. Here's the

  394. answer to it.

  395. Because our

  396. gospel came to

  397. you not only

  398. in word,

  399. but also in

  400. power and in

  401. the Holy Spirit

  402. with full

  403. conviction,

  404. they were

  405. changed by

  406. the word of

  407. God.

  408. That's how

  409. they knew,

  410. Paul knew,

  411. that they'd

  412. been chosen

  413. because they

  414. believed,

  415. they trusted.

  416. God did this

  417. supernatural work

  418. in them and

  419. they were never

  420. the same.

  421. I want you to

  422. think,

  423. we are God's

  424. chosen people

  425. if we're

  426. Christians.

  427. You are one

  428. of God's

  429. special people.

  430. You are right

  431. now.

  432. God gracious

  433. chose you to

  434. be his child

  435. before the

  436. foundation of

  437. the world.

  438. It had

  439. nothing to do

  440. with who you

  441. are or what

  442. you have or

  443. ever would do.

  444. It was all of

  445. God's grace and

  446. God's love.

  447. But then God

  448. worked in the

  449. people that he

  450. put in your

  451. life.

  452. He worked in

  453. all the life

  454. circumstances to

  455. enable you to

  456. hear the gospel

  457. and then

  458. respond to the

  459. gospel by

  460. being convicted

  461. of your sin,

  462. changing your

  463. mind about how

  464. you're living,

  465. turning from your

  466. sin and trusting

  467. Jesus and calling

  468. on him to save

  469. you.

  470. We're God's

  471. chosen special

  472. people.

  473. But that's not

  474. all it says.

  475. We're also God's

  476. holy people.

  477. The basic

  478. bare bone

  479. definition of

  480. holiness is to

  481. be set apart.

  482. When God chose

  483. us, he also set

  484. us apart as his

  485. special people.

  486. You are in the

  487. sight of God right

  488. now.

  489. Not because of

  490. who you are or

  491. what you've done,

  492. but in spite of

  493. who you are or

  494. what you've done.

  495. If you're one

  496. with Jesus and

  497. God looks at

  498. you, the penalty

  499. for your sin all

  500. sin, past,

  501. present, and

  502. future has been

  503. paid, Jesus

  504. paid the penalty

  505. when he died on

  506. the cross.

  507. When God looks

  508. at you, the

  509. perfect, righteous

  510. life of Jesus is

  511. credited to you.

  512. You're God's

  513. special person,

  514. chosen by him,

  515. set apart by him

  516. to be his.

  517. But, as we're

  518. going to see in a

  519. little bit, today

  520. and next week,

  521. God didn't just

  522. set us apart to

  523. be his special

  524. people.

  525. He set us apart

  526. to live like,

  527. act like,

  528. his special

  529. people.

  530. We'll see that in a

  531. moment.

  532. Then look at this.

  533. We are God's

  534. beloved or God's

  535. dearly loved people.

  536. If you're a

  537. Christian, you're the

  538. object of God's

  539. special love.

  540. Just about every

  541. time Paul talks

  542. about God's

  543. choosing or

  544. electing us, he

  545. attributes it to

  546. God's love or

  547. God's grace.

  548. John, the apostle,

  549. says that it's

  550. because of God's

  551. love that we are

  552. children of God.

  553. Look at how he

  554. said this in 1 John

  555. 3.

  556. See what kind of

  557. love the Father

  558. has given to us,

  559. that we should be

  560. called children of

  561. God, and so we

  562. are.

  563. It is special.

  564. We need to

  565. understand this.

  566. The God who

  567. created all that

  568. is, almighty God,

  569. chose us, set us

  570. apart, loves us.

  571. He's made us his

  572. children.

  573. But God wants us

  574. to do, now we need

  575. to think about that

  576. and let it sink in

  577. and think about the

  578. privilege that we

  579. have.

  580. God wants us to do

  581. more than just sit

  582. around and think

  583. about it.

  584. Don't just sit

  585. around and think

  586. about how special

  587. you are.

  588. He wants us to

  589. live like his

  590. special people every

  591. day by becoming

  592. more and more like

  593. Christ.

  594. He wants us to

  595. become more and

  596. more holy and pure

  597. and develop the

  598. character qualities

  599. we're going to look

  600. at in the rest of

  601. this passage.

  602. The rest of this

  603. passage shows us

  604. what it looks like

  605. to become more

  606. like Jesus every

  607. day.

  608. Number two, we

  609. can live like God's

  610. special people.

  611. We can, as

  612. Christians indwell by

  613. the Spirit of God,

  614. we can live like

  615. God's special people.

  616. It's a growing

  617. process, but we

  618. can.

  619. Paul describes what

  620. it means to live

  621. like God's special

  622. people.

  623. And the rest of

  624. this chapter,

  625. really, and in on

  626. the chapter four,

  627. we'll look at

  628. verses 12 through

  629. 14 now under this

  630. heading.

  631. Here's the heading.

  632. Let the love of

  633. Christ fill you.

  634. We can live like

  635. God's special people

  636. in the first way.

  637. We need to let the

  638. love of Christ fill

  639. us.

  640. Look at verse 14.

  641. And above all these,

  642. all the things he's

  643. been talking about,

  644. in verse 12,

  645. compassionate hearts,

  646. kindness, humility,

  647. meekness, and patience,

  648. bearing with one

  649. another, forgiving one

  650. another.

  651. And above all this,

  652. put on love, which

  653. binds everything

  654. together in perfect

  655. harmony.

  656. All of these

  657. character qualities,

  658. these virtues that I

  659. just read, verses 12

  660. and 13, they are

  661. demonstrations of love.

  662. You really will think,

  663. say, that you love

  664. your spouse, your

  665. child, your friend.

  666. You'll be compassionate.

  667. You'll bear with them

  668. in good times and bad.

  669. You'll forgive.

  670. Love is what holds

  671. them all together.

  672. Paul says that love

  673. binds them together in

  674. perfect harmony.

  675. They all go together.

  676. You can't pick and

  677. choose.

  678. It's like when Paul

  679. talks along this same

  680. line in his letter to

  681. the Galatians, he

  682. describes Christian

  683. character in terms of

  684. the fruit of the

  685. Spirit.

  686. Well, fruit of the

  687. Spirit is singular.

  688. But he says the fruit

  689. of the Spirit is love,

  690. joy, peace, patience,

  691. kindness, goodness,

  692. faithfulness, gentleness,

  693. and self-control.

  694. They all go together.

  695. You can't pick and choose

  696. which one you'll focus

  697. on, try to develop to

  698. the neglect of the

  699. other.

  700. Let me give you an

  701. example.

  702. If Lisa is sick or

  703. when she's sick, I do

  704. show her compassion.

  705. And I brought that out

  706. in the first service when

  707. she was sitting right

  708. there and I asked her,

  709. am I not compassionate

  710. when you are sick?

  711. She said I was.

  712. If she's sick enough to

  713. be in the bed, I'll get

  714. whatever she needs to

  715. drink, medicine, put it

  716. on the nightstand there.

  717. If you need anything, let

  718. me know I am

  719. compassionate.

  720. But after a day or two,

  721. I'm not very patient.

  722. And what started off being

  723. very kind, when are you

  724. going to do it yourself?

  725. You know, you got to get

  726. stronger, you know, suck it

  727. up, it's time, you know.

  728. You see, honestly, you're

  729. everybody here is like me

  730. in your own way.

  731. Honestly, there are times

  732. I can pat myself on the

  733. back about one quality,

  734. two, some situations,

  735. but not really care that

  736. I'm not all that kind in

  737. another situation.

  738. Or not really be concerned

  739. and work on developing

  740. more patience.

  741. And what Paul wants us to

  742. understand is that is not

  743. acceptable.

  744. You can't be a godly person

  745. on one hand and a jerk on

  746. the other.

  747. We're supposed, as Christians,

  748. indwelled by the Spirit of

  749. God, develop, work on,

  750. becoming like Jesus in all of

  751. these qualities that he

  752. perfectly embodies, that we

  753. see him demonstrating in his

  754. earthly life in the Gospels.

  755. I want us to start looking at

  756. what it looks like for the love

  757. of Christ to fill us.

  758. We're not going to finish it

  759. today, but we're talking about

  760. we can live like God's special

  761. people.

  762. The first thing, we need to

  763. let the love of Christ fill us,

  764. which means it will control us

  765. and have an effect in a lot of

  766. different ways.

  767. Here's how it's going to have an

  768. effect in the first way.

  769. Love will unite us with all our

  770. brothers and sisters in Christ.

  771. Now look at verse 11.

  772. If you've been very careful to

  773. follow along in this whole section

  774. of Colossians, you've thought to

  775. yourself, he skipped verse 11.

  776. We're coming to it now.

  777. Verse 11.

  778. Here there is not Greek and Jew,

  779. circumcised and uncircumcised,

  780. barbarian, Scythian, a lowly,

  781. despised, godless people, slave

  782. free, but Christ is all and in all.

  783. The groups mentioned here, here's

  784. the point.

  785. They were different in race, in

  786. class, social class, and in

  787. culture, in nationality, in

  788. religion.

  789. We understand such differences,

  790. don't we?

  791. We live in a very diverse world,

  792. country, community even.

  793. All kinds of different people we

  794. rub shoulders with, work with,

  795. live near all the time.

  796. There's much racial tension in

  797. this country today.

  798. We're aware of it.

  799. I sometimes think, and others do,

  800. who comment on this kind of stuff,

  801. that there's even more tension

  802. between social classes in this

  803. country.

  804. Now, during election years,

  805. many politicians seem to try to

  806. make these tensions worse by

  807. focusing on every single thing that

  808. divides us to the neglect of any

  809. good thing that unites us.

  810. But among God's people, we are called to

  811. focus on, major on things that unite us

  812. with the different kinds of races,

  813. cultures, and social classes of people

  814. that are around us.

  815. We as Christians, we have two major points

  816. of unity that we need to understand,

  817. be aware of, and then live out.

  818. Number one, we are really all members of

  819. one race, the human race.

  820. We are all people, red, yellow, black, and

  821. white.

  822. We are all created in the image of God.

  823. And we are all descendants of the

  824. original couple, Adam and Eve.

  825. That makes us not so different in the

  826. big scheme of things.

  827. And then that's just general.

  828. That's just living life in this world.

  829. Everybody you see, we're a part of one

  830. big race, the human race.

  831. We are all, every one, created in the

  832. image of God, which makes us of all

  833. equal worth and value and so forth.

  834. We all descend from the same original

  835. couple, Adam and Eve.

  836. There is a basic human unifying factor

  837. that we ought to understand, embrace, and

  838. make as much of as we can in the world

  839. in general.

  840. But in the church, among God's people,

  841. as Christians, we're all members of one

  842. family, God's family.

  843. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we, with

  844. every other Christian, we became brothers

  845. and sisters, spiritually speaking.

  846. God is our Father.

  847. We are His children.

  848. All Christians in this world.

  849. Now, let's try to think about a unifying factor or force.

  850. One of the most unifying forces in this world today

  851. is sports.

  852. I am amazed at the power of sports teams,

  853. what it does to bring diverse people together.

  854. I often read about college football, my favorite sport to watch and read about and know something

  855. about.

  856. I read a lot of things, articles and so forth that talks about the inner workings of teams,

  857. not just Clemson.

  858. We'll talk about Clemson.

  859. What amazes me is all that different group of guys,

  860. different races, different socioeconomic backgrounds,

  861. different cultural stuff they bring.

  862. But when they come to that team and they become one,

  863. they become a Clemson Tiger,

  864. everything that you read and observe,

  865. they talk about being brothers.

  866. These grown, athletic men talk about loving one another.

  867. They talk about having one another's back.

  868. If you look at that whole team,

  869. they're just so different.

  870. They look, think, different.

  871. They come from different backgrounds.

  872. But they are a great example,

  873. models of unity in diversity.

  874. diversity.

  875. If that could happen in a sport,

  876. on a team,

  877. shouldn't we as Christians in the church,

  878. shouldn't we be able to do better

  879. with the Spirit of God indwelling all of us?

  880. The church should be the greatest model

  881. of unity and diversity in the world,

  882. in the country.

  883. But it is not.

  884. And there's a lot of differences,

  885. a lot of reasons why,

  886. not all of them bad.

  887. But we're not.

  888. Let's just look at who we are right now.

  889. If you look around this room,

  890. just this particular room,

  891. we're very different.

  892. Education, wealth, job type,

  893. personal interests, family backgrounds.

  894. We're different.

  895. But our common commitment to Christ,

  896. our common faith in Him,

  897. should bring us together as

  898. brothers and sisters

  899. who embrace one another as brothers and sisters.

  900. Now, I don't want you to think

  901. I'm talking about some kind of

  902. pie in the sky type stuff.

  903. Paul understood that this list of people,

  904. they were very different.

  905. And as in the church, as Christians,

  906. they embraced one another.

  907. They loved one another.

  908. They were united.

  909. He's talking about it in Christ.

  910. But they were still different.

  911. Even in your family.

  912. If you've got more than one sibling,

  913. you are probably closer to one

  914. than the other.

  915. You love them both.

  916. If you've got a whole bunch of them,

  917. you probably don't even like one of them.

  918. I mean, you think about it.

  919. When you get together at Christmas,

  920. Thanksgiving, you've got a bunch of people there,

  921. you know, aunts, uncles, all these cousins.

  922. And you really do love one another.

  923. You go to war with one another.

  924. But there's some of them you really love.

  925. And there's some of them you like.

  926. And there's some of them,

  927. I don't care if I ever see them.

  928. In this church,

  929. being who we're supposed to be,

  930. there's going to be some people,

  931. your brother and sister,

  932. that you love,

  933. you're super close to.

  934. There's going to be some

  935. that you like to see and speak to

  936. and, you know,

  937. talk a little bit to.

  938. There's some,

  939. if your path never crossed,

  940. no big deal.

  941. That's the reality of being different.

  942. But as Christians in the church,

  943. in the kingdom of God,

  944. while we're not as close to everybody,

  945. you can't be.

  946. While we do recognize differences

  947. and we do some things differently,

  948. there should be this common bond

  949. of love,

  950. of common faith in Christ

  951. that enables us to truly look at one another

  952. and love,

  953. care,

  954. hope,

  955. seek the best for.

  956. Embrace one another.

  957. Look out for one another.

  958. Now,

  959. is that true for you?

  960. For some people,

  961. it certainly is.

  962. For some people,

  963. your church family

  964. is truly

  965. your Christian,

  966. spiritual family,

  967. and you look around

  968. and these are my brothers and sisters.

  969. I know some of them better

  970. than I know others,

  971. but

  972. I'm here

  973. and I'm a part of it.

  974. But everybody's not.

  975. I want to ask you,

  976. do you have the kind of love

  977. that allows you to look beyond

  978. the differences you see in this room

  979. and truly embrace

  980. everybody you see

  981. as a brother or sister?

  982. Or,

  983. do you look around

  984. and see all the differences

  985. and you really only embrace

  986. those who

  987. think

  988. and look

  989. like you?

  990. the love of Christ.

  991. When He

  992. fills us,

  993. He will help us

  994. to work on

  995. truly

  996. being

  997. a family

  998. with our

  999. Christian

  1000. brothers and sisters.

  1001. But let's think about

  1002. outside the church

  1003. for a moment.

  1004. Do you really believe

  1005. that people

  1006. of different races,

  1007. classes,

  1008. and cultures

  1009. are created

1010. in the image of God

  1011. just like you?

  1012. Do you ask God,

  1013. at least ask Him,

1014. to help you to treat

  1015. all the different kinds

1016. of people in your life

  1017. with worth,

  1018. with value,

  1019. with a certain amount

  1020. of dignity

  1021. because they are

  1022. a fellow human being,

  1023. your equal

  1024. human being?

1025. Let's go one step further.

  1026. You look at these

  1027. different type of people

  1028. around you

  1029. in this community.

  1030. It's not only being

  1031. created in the image

  1032. of God,

  1033. but being loved

  1034. by God.

  1035. Do you ever even

  1036. think about

  1037. some of these people

  1038. as someone

  1039. for whom

  1040. Christ

  1041. died?

  1042. And

  1043. do you ever think

1044. that some of the people

  1045. who are different,

  1046. who are odd,

  1047. who are difficult,

1048. but they're in your life,

  1049. they're

1050. in some of your worlds,

  1051. do you ever think

1052. maybe God put them there

  1053. for you

  1054. to embrace

  1055. and share the gospel

  1056. with

  1057. and show them

  1058. love?

1059. When the love of God

1060. is active in our lives,

  1061. we will be able,

  1062. it may be hard,

  1063. but we'll be able

  1064. to find common ground

  1065. with people

  1066. who are different

  1067. from us,

  1068. especially

  1069. when they are our

  1070. brothers and sisters

  1071. in Christ.

  1072. We won't let

  1073. racial and cultural

  1074. and class

  1075. differences

  1076. be barriers

  1077. to our

  1078. developing relationships

  1079. with them.

  1080. Now next week

  1081. we're going to

  1082. look at how

  1083. Christian love

  1084. will enable us

  1085. to live like

  1086. God's people

  1087. with those

  1088. who are closer

  1089. to us,

  1090. how love

  1091. will enable us

  1092. to bear

  1093. with our brothers

  1094. and sisters

  1095. in Christ,

  1096. be compassionate,

  1097. show kindness,

  1098. these kind of things.

  1099. And we're going to

  1100. also look how

  1101. Christian love

  1102. will enable us

  1103. to forgive people,

  1104. not to hold grudges,

  1105. not to be bitter,

  1106. but to forgive people

  1107. just as

  1108. God has forgiven us.

1109. But I want to conclude

  1110. this morning

  1111. by looking at the

  1112. first phrase

  1113. of verse 12.

  1114. He says,

  1115. put on.

  1116. Verse 12,

  1117. put on then

  1118. as God's chosen

  1119. and so forth

  1120. and so on.

  1121. Put on.

  1122. Some translations

  1123. say clothe yourselves.

1124. What he wants to see

1125. is this is a present

  1126. tense command.

1127. It means to put on

  1128. and keep on

  1129. putting on

  1130. these character

  1131. qualities.

  1132. Our developing

  1133. humility

  1134. and kindness

  1135. is something

  1136. we're supposed

  1137. to work at

  1138. every day

  1139. in just an

  1140. ongoing effort.

  1141. spirit.

  1142. It's not,

  1143. it's a mindset.

  1144. It's a lifestyle.

  1145. And we can live

  1146. and love people

  1147. this way

  1148. because we are

  1149. God's chosen,

  1150. holy,

  1151. and beloved people.

  1152. God has put

  1153. his spirit

  1154. in us

  1155. to give us

  1156. the desire

  1157. and the ability

  1158. to live like

  1159. his people.

  1160. So here's how

1161. I want to end it.

  1162. Do you see

  1163. signs

  1164. that God

  1165. is working

  1166. in you

  1167. this way?

  1168. Do you see

  1169. signs

  1170. that the love

  1171. of God

  1172. is at work

  1173. in you

  1174. toward people

  1175. as we're

  1176. talking about?

  1177. If we're

  1178. truly Christians

  1179. we should

  1180. see some

  1181. signs.

  1182. If you don't

  1183. see any,

  1184. if you basically

  1185. just do not

  1186. care about

  1187. anybody that's

  1188. different from

  1189. you,

  1190. you can't be

  1191. a Christian.

  1192. You can't have

  1193. the spirit

  1194. of God

  1195. in you,

  1196. the spirit

  1197. of love,

  1198. joy,

  1199. peace,

  1200. patience,

  1201. kindness,

  1202. you can't

  1203. have his

  1204. spirit

  1205. dwell in

  1206. you and

  1207. just not

  1208. care about

  1209. anybody who

  1210. looks,

  1211. thinks,

  1212. or acts

  1213. different

  1214. than you

  1215. do.

  1216. So if

  1217. that's the

  1218. case,

  1219. what you

  1220. need to

  1221. do this

  1222. morning

  1223. is admit

  1224. that and

  1225. if it

  1226. bothers you,

  1227. turn to

  1228. Christ in

  1229. real faith

  1230. and commitment.

  1231. But it

  1232. could be that

  1233. you are a

  1234. Christian.

  1235. It could be

  1236. that you know

  1237. very well

  1238. what I'm

  1239. talking about,

  1240. how the

  1241. spirit of

  1242. God gives

  1243. you the

  1244. desire and

  1245. the ability

  1246. to show

  1247. this kind

  1248. love but

  1249. you've just

  1250. not been

  1251. doing it

  1252. lately.

  1253. Maybe you

  1254. have quenched

  1255. the spirit

  1256. of God.

  1257. Maybe you've

  1258. developed a

  1259. hard heart

  1260. towards certain

  1261. kinds of

  1262. people or

  1263. certain

  1264. individuals.

  1265. If that's

  1266. the case,

  1267. I want to

  1268. encourage you

  1269. to do some

  1270. serious soul

  1271. searching.

  1272. That's not

  1273. who you are

  1274. in Christ.

  1275. That's not

  1276. how God

  1277. calls you

  1278. to be.

  1279. And it

  1280. may be

  1281. there needs

  1282. to be

  1283. some

  1284. confession

  1285. made,

  1286. changing

  1287. minds,

  1288. turning from

  1289. sin,

  1290. coming back

  1291. to the Lord

  1292. in a new

  1293. commitment,

  1294. asking him

  1295. to help

  1296. you to

  1297. love this

  1298. way.

  1299. And you

  1300. can do

  1301. it if

  1302. you're united

  1303. to Christ,

  1304. filled with

  1305. the spirit

  1306. of Christ.

  1307. That's just

  1308. who we are

  1309. as Christians.

  1310. let's pray

  1311. together.

  1312. Father,

  1313. show each

  1314. one of us

  1315. just where

  1316. we are

  1317. in our

  1318. relationship

  1319. with you

  1320. and help

  1321. us to

  1322. draw

  1323. closer.

  1324. Give us

  1325. the desire

  1326. to put

  1327. forth the

  1328. effort

  1329. to put

  1330. on

  1331. the love

  1332. of Christ

  1333. in these

  1334. specific

  1335. ways

  1336. that we've

  1337. seen

  1338. and do

  1339. it in our

  1340. relationships

  1341. with all

  1342. kinds of

  1343. people.

  1344. Let's just

  1345. now listen

  1346. to the Lord

  1347. and respond

  1348. to him.

  1349. I'd be

  1350. happy to

  1351. pray with

  1352. you here

  1353. at the

  1354. front

  1355. during this

  1356. time.

  1357. Just

  1358. the main

  1359. thing is to

  1360. obey the

  1361. Lord.

  1362. What a

  1363. man
