  1. If you got up one morning and it was 10 degrees outside and your six-year-old came out of his room dressed in shorts and a t-shirt and said, I'm ready to go to school, how would you respond?

  2. Would you say something like, okay, but next time it's 10 degrees outside, don't wear summer clothes.

  3. Wear what will make you warm.

  4. You wouldn't do that, would you?

  5. You would order that child to go back to their room, take off those summer clothes, put on some warm winter clothes, long pants, sweatshirt, coats, something like that.

  6. And the reason you do that is because you want to make sure your child is dressed appropriately.

  7. Well, in Colossians chapter 3, Paul is telling us how to live appropriately as God's children.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  8. And he actually does it in a way like taking off certain things, putting on certain things.

  9. Turn with me if you would to Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  10. And as you're turning, I want to remind you that we've already looked at the kinds of things that we're supposed to put off, take off.

  11. He even says, put to death.

  12. Things like sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

  13. He also said to put off anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouths.

  14. Do not lie to one another.

  15. We looked at that for two weeks.

  16. Last week, we started looking at the kinds of things we're supposed to put on.

  17. Things that should be in us and come out of us as Christians.

  18. Look at it.

  19. Put on then as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.

  20. Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other.

  21. And above all these, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

  22. Before we go any further, I want to reemphasize.

  23. This is not saying this is how we become a Christian.

  24. I have tried to stress from the very beginning of this series,

  25. Paul is not saying that we become a Christian by putting off certain sins

  26. and putting on certain Christ-like character qualities.

  27. Excuse me.

  28. Salvation is something we can't earn.

  29. We don't do anything to get it.

  30. Salvation is by the grace of God that we receive through faith in Jesus Christ.

  31. Probably the most well-known statement in the New Testament about that is Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  32. Look at this.

  33. For by grace you have been saved through faith.

  34. And this is not your own doing.

  35. It is the gift of God.

  36. Not a result of works so that no one may boast.

  37. In Colossians chapter 3, Paul is telling us that if we are truly united to Christ by faith,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  38. if we are one with Him through faith, then we are accepted by God.

  39. We are God's chosen ones, holy and beloved.

  40. Now what He's going to, what He's, all the details of chapter 3,

  41. He's telling us, if this is who we are, we need to live like it.

  42. As God's people, we are responsible to live like the people that we are.

  43. United to Christ.

  44. Filled with His Spirit.

  45. We don't do it by our own willpower.

  46. As I've said, we do it because the Spirit of Christ lives in us.

  47. And within us, He gives us the desire to put off sin.

  48. To develop Christ-like character qualities.

  49. He not only gives us the desire to do that, but He will help us.

  50. He'll prompt us, encourage us, give us the ability to do these things.

  51. But we've got to cooperate with Him.

  52. Paul tells us in Colossians 3 how we cooperate with Him.

  53. We're looking at it in terms of three goals that God has for us.

  54. Goal number one, be mindful of who you are in Christ.

  55. Goal number two, don't be who you are apart from Christ.

  56. And goal number three, we began last week, become more like Christ every day.

  57. We saw last week why we can do that.

  58. Understand, this passage of Scripture is saying we can become more like Christ in terms of character development every day.

  59. Look first, here's why.

  60. We are God's special people.

  61. We're God's chosen ones.

  62. We looked at it in detail last week.

  63. We're God's holy people.

  64. We are beloved or dearly loved.

  65. Now, let's look at how we actually become like Christ.

  66. We started last week, point number two.

  67. We can live like God's special people.

  68. We can live like the special people that we are.

  69. And love is the key.

  70. Look at verse 14.

  71. Let the love of Christ fill you.

  72. And above all these, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

  73. Now, note that little phrase, all these.

  74. It refers to the list of virtues found in verses 12 through 13.

  75. Compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, or gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another, forgiving each other.

  76. Those qualities are bound together like pages in a book on Christian love.

  77. Each one of those qualities you see listed there.

  78. That's some aspect of love.

  79. Now, Paul says something similar to this in 1 Corinthians 13, where we have what we might consider the Bible's definition of love.

  80. 1 Corinthians 13.

  81. I want you to look at it with me.

  82. Paul includes most of these qualities we've been looking at by either name or description in these verses.

  83. Note, love is patient and kind.

  84. Love does not envy or boast.

  85. It is not arrogant or rude.

  86. It does not insist on its own way.

  87. It is not irritable or resentful.

  88. It does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.

  89. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

  90. Here's what Paul is trying to tell us in Colossians 3.

  91. If we are filled with the love of Christ, we will seek to express in all of our relationships these kind of qualities.

  92. And especially in our relationships with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  93. We looked at one of the ways Christian love is expressed last week, and I just want to call attention to it now.

  94. Love will motivate us to live in unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  95. Look at verse 11.

  96. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free, but Christ is all and in all.

  97. The idea is that all Christians are brothers and sisters in Christ.

  98. We ought to live like it.

  99. We ought to act like it.

  100. Even though we're different.

  101. And I said last week, if you've got more than one sibling or just one, you're all different.

  102. You may not like everything about your brothers and sisters, but you love one another.

  103. We're in spite of those differences, and that's how we're supposed to be as Christians in relationship with one another.

  104. But we also looked at very briefly last week that we are members of one race, the human race.

  105. And so we, as God's people, we must not let differences like we see in that list there,

  106. differences in race, social classes, or cultures, we can't let that divide us.

  107. We definitely can't let it divide us in the church.

  108. But we need to demonstrate how, as being members of the human race,

  109. we don't let such divisions divide us in our community at large.

  110. Now, Paul is just getting started in the ways we ought to express love.

  111. So let's move on and see that love will motivate us to be gracious with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  112. And these qualities listed in verse 12 are characteristics of graciousness.

  113. Look at it.

  114. As we look at each of these gracious expressions of love, keep in mind,

  115. these are Christ-like character qualities that Paul describes in Galatians 5 as fruit of the Spirit.

  116. What you see on the screen, what we're going to look at,

  117. they are Spirit, Holy Spirit-produced qualities that will cause us to desire,

  118. to desire them, to develop them,

  119. and then put forth the effort to demonstrate them toward other people,

  120. especially other Christians.

  121. And here's what I want us to think about as we go through all this stuff.

  122. I'm not going to say it over and over again.

  123. But we're talking about, as Christians,

  124. with the Spirit of God living within us,

  125. we can develop these qualities in relationships with people.

  126. Home and the church

  127. is the practice field

  128. where we develop these things.

  129. Home.

  130. Those people you live with.

  131. The church here.

  132. Church family.

  133. This is where

  134. we work on.

  135. And sometimes through trial and error,

  136. developing these qualities.

  137. Let's look at them.

  138. The first one is compassionate hearts.

  139. It's often translated heartfelt compassion.

  140. Or maybe even

  141. tender-hearted mercy.

  142. It means to feel deeply

  143. for another person.

  144. Now,

  145. we may have a hard time doing that today

  146. because

  147. everybody's life

  148. is busy.

  149. You think about it.

  150. Many people in this room,

  151. you've got more on your plate

  152. than you really want to be there.

  153. You've got so much you've got to think about,

  154. so much you've got to do

  155. on a daily basis.

  156. And so it could be that

  157. just the routine of life,

  158. the busyness of life,

  159. not anything bad,

  160. it so consumes you

  161. that you don't really

  162. notice

  163. the people around you.

  164. You don't notice what's going on

  165. in other people's lives.

  166. Think about it.

  167. How closely

  168. do you really pay attention

  169. to what's going on

  170. in your fellow Sunday school

  171. class members' lives?

  172. How much attention

  173. do you give to them,

  174. especially

  175. if there's something going on

  176. that

  177. they're down,

  178. they're discouraged?

  179. What about the people

  180. you live with?

  181. The people under your roof?

  182. Do you notice

  183. when something's going on

  184. in their life?

  185. Do you notice

  186. when their countenance

  187. is different?

  188. Do you notice

  189. when the tone

  190. of their voice

  191. is just not

  192. normal?

  193. normal?

  194. Do you notice

  195. when

  196. they're not

  197. acting

  198. as they typically do?

  199. Do you notice

  200. when they're down

  201. what I'm getting at?

  202. Your parents,

  203. your children,

  204. your spouse.

  205. Do you notice

  206. when something's

  207. just not

  208. quite

  209. right?

  210. And then

  211. do you care

  212. enough

  213. about these

  214. people in your life

  215. that you really

  216. do feel

  217. deeply

  218. for them

  219. when you know

  220. they're hurting?

  221. Well,

  222. Christian love

  223. will compel us.

  224. Paul is saying

  225. Christian love

  226. will compel us

  227. not to overlook

  228. the people around

  229. about us

  230. who are struggling.

  231. We will be

  232. compelled

  233. to demonstrate

  234. heartfelt

  235. compassion

  236. in the words

  237. that we speak

  238. and the things

  239. that we do

  240. for them.

  241. It's a part

  242. of being

  243. gracious,

  244. showing love,

  245. compassionate hearts.

  246. Number two,

  247. kindness.

  248. Jerry Bridges

  249. doesn't really

  250. describe it

  251. or define it.

  252. He more or less

  253. describes it.

  254. I want you

  255. to look at this.

  256. Apart from

  257. God's grace,

  258. most of us

  259. naturally tend

  260. to be concerned

  261. about ourselves,

  262. our responsibilities,

  263. our problems,

  264. our plans.

  265. But the person

  266. who has grown

  267. in the grace

  268. of kindness

  269. has expanded

  270. his thinking

  271. outside of himself

  272. and has developed

  273. a genuine interest

  274. in the happiness

  275. and well-being

  276. of those

  277. around him.

  278. I want you

  279. to stop and think.

  280. Do you have

  281. a genuine interest

  282. in the happiness

  283. of the people

  284. that you share

  285. life with

  286. in your home,

  287. in your Sunday

  288. school class,

  289. those that

  290. you are

  291. close to?

  292. Lisa told

  293. me a story

  294. a while back

  295. about her

  296. grandfather.

  297. brother.

  298. He told

  299. this story

  300. about when

  301. he was a

  302. teenager.

  303. He was a

  304. teenage boy,

  305. had a brother

  306. who was another

  307. teenager,

  308. and they

  309. moved to a

  310. new house

  311. out in the

  312. country.

  313. And the house

  314. that they moved

  315. into,

  316. the people who

  317. moved out,

  318. they had already

  319. planted a garden.

  320. And so when

  321. Lisa's grandfather

  322. and his brother

  323. and family

  324. moved in,

  325. they had a garden

  326. there ready,

  327. waiting for them.

  328. Well, one

  329. morning of the

  330. first week

  331. they lived in

  332. that house,

  333. they heard a

  334. knock at the

  335. door very

  336. early.

  337. They opened the

  338. door and it

  339. was an angry

  340. neighbor that

  341. they had never

  342. met.

  343. And his first

  344. words to his

  345. new neighbors

  346. were,

  347. do you have

  348. two cows?

  349. Well, Ms.

  350. Murphy said,

  351. yes, we do.

  352. Well, he

  353. angrily informed

  354. her,

  355. that her

  356. cows had gotten

  357. out during a

  358. thunderstorm that

  359. night and had

  360. trampled down a

  361. good bit of his

  362. garden.

  363. And he,

  364. before he gave

  365. her time to say

  366. a word,

  367. he told her that

  368. the damages

  369. would amount

  370. to $4.

  371. This is a long

  372. time ago.

  373. Well, she

  374. apologized,

  375. didn't say a

  376. word, apologized,

  377. paid him the

  378. $4 and sent her

  379. two teenage boys

  380. to get the cows

  381. and repair the

  382. fence.

  383. And that was

  384. it.

  385. No more words

  386. from that guy.

  387. Well, several

  388. weeks later,

  389. another storm

  390. came up at

  391. night.

  392. And the next

  393. morning, the

  394. Murphys looked

  395. out and there

  396. were two strange

  397. cows in their

  398. garden.

  399. Ms.

  400. Murphy told the

  401. boys, put those

  402. cows up, the

  403. owner will be

  404. looking for them,

  405. probably come by

  406. here before very

  407. long.

  408. And sure enough,

  409. he did.

  410. Later that

  411. morning, that

  412. neighbor who

  413. had made her

  414. pay $4 for

  415. damages to his

  416. garden came by,

  417. asking if they

  418. had seen his

  419. cows.

  420. He said that

  421. the wind had

  422. knocked down a

  423. tree and the

  424. tree had knocked

  425. a hole in the

  426. fence and they

  427. had gotten out.

  428. Well, Ms.

  429. Murphy told him,

  430. yes, your cows

  431. have been here,

  432. been in our

  433. garden.

  434. And we put them

  435. in the barn,

  436. waiting for

  437. somebody to come

  438. and get them.

  439. Well, you know

  440. how the man

  441. felt.

  442. He asked her,

  443. what did he

  444. owe her for

  445. the damages?

  446. Now, Lisa's

  447. grandfather said

  448. that when he

  449. and his brother

  450. heard this,

  451. they couldn't

  452. wait for their

  453. mother to save

  454. $4 and get

  455. their money back.

  456. But that's not

  457. what she said.

  458. She told that

  459. man, you don't

  460. owe us anything.

  461. Things like that

  462. happened.

  463. And then she

  464. told her boys,

  465. help this man

  466. get his cows

  467. back home and

  468. stay and help

  469. him repair

  470. his fence.

  471. Well, those

  472. boys were,

  473. they were just

  474. mad at what

  475. their mother

  476. had done.

  477. But the

  478. neighbor,

  479. her grandfather

  480. said, as a

  481. teenage boy,

  482. he noticed.

  483. He was

  484. obviously

  485. humbled

  486. by her

  487. kindness.

  488. And that

  489. very night,

  490. there came a

  491. knock at the

  492. door.

  493. That neighbor

  494. brought them

  495. what he said

  496. was the biggest

  497. apple pie he

  498. had ever seen.

  499. And from that

  500. day, he said

  501. they were not

  502. only good

  503. neighbors, but

  504. they were also

  505. good friends.

  506. He said

  507. until they

  508. moved, that

  509. man could not

  510. do enough to

  511. help them

  512. around their

  513. farm.

  514. I tell that

  515. story, that is

  516. one of the best

  517. stories I've ever

  518. heard to illustrate

  519. what kindness

  520. can do.

  521. The power,

  522. the power

  523. of treating

  524. someone kindly.

  525. Not like they

  526. have treated

  527. you, but in

  528. spite of how

  529. they've treated

  530. you.

  531. Let's look at

  532. the next one.

  533. Humility refers

  534. to an absence

  535. of arrogance and

  536. self-promotion.

  537. It was not

  538. considered a

  539. virtue in the

  540. ancient world.

  541. It's not

  542. considered a

  543. virtue by many

  544. people today

  545. either, is it?

  546. But Christianity

  547. changed that.

  548. And the way

  549. Christianity

  550. changed that

  551. for Christians,

  552. that is, it

  553. was a quality

  554. that Jesus

  555. demonstrated when

  556. he left the

  557. glory of heaven.

  558. Jesus has

  559. always existed

  560. as the Son

  561. of God, always

  562. in heaven with

  563. the Father, the

  564. Spirit, the

  565. Trinity.

  566. But Jesus

  567. left the

  568. glory of

  569. heaven to

  570. come into

  571. this world

  572. as a man

  573. to die for

  574. our sins on

  575. the cross.

  576. Paul explains

  577. it, describes

  578. Jesus doing

  579. this like this.

  580. He says that

  581. Jesus emptied

  582. himself by

  583. taking the

  584. form of a

  585. servant and

  586. that he

  587. humbled himself

  588. by becoming

  589. obedient to

  590. the point of

  591. death, even

  592. death on a

  593. cross.

  594. Now that's

  595. humility.

  596. humility.

  597. This kind of

  598. character quality

  599. will lead us to

  600. humble ourselves

  601. in order to

  602. serve the people

  603. in our lives

  604. that we see

  605. have a need

  606. and we know

  607. we can meet

  608. that need.

  609. This kind of

  610. humility goes

  611. with these other

  612. things.

  613. We have

  614. compassion.

  615. There's kindness

  616. within us.

  617. There's something

  618. within us.

  619. It's the Spirit

  620. of God working

  621. that causes us

  622. to humble

  623. ourselves, to

  624. put somebody

  625. else first for

  626. their benefit, to

  627. meet their need.

  628. The fourth one

  629. is the word

  630. meekness.

  631. It's more often

  632. than not

  633. translated gentleness.

  634. Probably the

  635. most undesired

  636. quality that we

  637. could think of,

  638. the idea of

  639. being meek.

  640. Because the

  641. idea of being

  642. meek sounds

  643. weak, doesn't

  644. it?

  645. But in the

  646. Bible it's

  647. really talking

  648. about strength

  649. that is under

  650. control.

  651. In Paul's

  652. day this word

  653. was used to

  654. describe animals

  655. that had been

  656. tamed such as

  657. a horse that

  658. could be

  659. controlled and

  660. guided by the

  661. reins in a

  662. man's hand and

  663. on the other

  664. end of the

  665. rein it was in

  666. the horse's bit

  667. in his mouth.

  668. I want you to

  669. think about how

  670. the driver of

  671. the Budweiser

  672. wagon controls

  673. those powerful

  674. Clydesdale

  675. horses with

  676. the reins there

  677. in his hands.

  678. Those are

  679. some of the

  680. most powerful

  681. horses you'll

  682. ever see.

  683. They could run

  684. away with that

  685. wagon if they

  686. wanted to.

  687. But those

  688. Clydesdales,

  689. their strength

  690. is under

  691. control.

  692. And they

  693. allow themselves

  694. to go this

  695. way or that

  696. way according

  697. to which way

  698. the reins pull

  699. them.

  700. In Numbers

    Numbers 12 chapter mention

  701. chapter 12,

  702. one of the

  703. best examples

  704. you'll find in

  705. the Bible of

  706. somebody who

  707. was called

  708. meek but was

  709. far from weak

  710. is Moses.

  711. In Numbers

  712. 12 and verse

  713. 3, he's

  714. actually described

  715. as the meekest

  716. man on earth.

  717. But a lot of

  718. you know from

  719. Bible stories

  720. growing up,

  721. some of you

  722. know from

  723. reading the

  724. Bible, some

  725. of you know

  726. from the movie

  727. the Ten

  728. Commandments

  729. that Moses

  730. was one of

  731. the most

  732. powerful leaders

  733. in the Bible.

  734. He made

  735. hard decisions.

  736. He was tough

  737. as nails on

  738. people when

  739. necessary.

  740. There were

  741. times that he

  742. demonstrated

  743. righteous anger.

  744. Moses described

  745. the most meek

  746. or the most

  747. humble man in

  748. the Bible but

  749. he was a man

  750. who was powerful.

  751. He was a true

  752. leader.

  753. He got things

  754. done but his

  755. strength most

  756. of the time was

  757. under control.

  758. That's what God

  759. calls us to do.

  760. Look at one

  761. more, patience.

  762. Sometimes translated

  763. long suffering.

  764. This word means

  765. more than just

  766. staying calm or

  767. not losing control

  768. under stress

  769. although it

  770. applies that way

  771. but refers to a

  772. willingness to put

  773. up with difficult

  774. people or

  775. situations for a

  776. long period of

  777. time without

  778. retaliation or

  779. bitterness.

  780. This is a

  781. spirit given

  782. ability to not

  783. let other people

  784. or situations

  785. dictate our

  786. actions or our

  787. response.

  788. Here's what I'm

  789. talking about.

  790. things happen

  791. sometimes in your

  792. life.

  793. Somebody does

  794. something, you

  795. get angry and

  796. you say, he

  797. made me mad.

  798. Some situation

  799. happens that just

  800. ticked me off.

  801. No.

  802. People may do

  803. something that

  804. sets the stage or

  805. tempts you to get

  806. angry.

  807. Some situations

  808. happen and the

  809. temptation arises for

  810. you to lose

  811. control, respond

  812. inappropriately.

  813. But we need to

  814. just admit, accept

  815. when we lose

  816. control, we say

  817. what we shouldn't

  818. do, do what we

  819. shouldn't do.

  820. That's our choice

  821. as Christians.

  822. The spirit of God

  823. lives within us.

  824. We can resist any

  825. temptation.

  826. You control how

  827. you respond to

  828. everybody in your

  829. life and every

  830. situation in your

  831. life.

  832. Some are more

  833. difficult.

  834. Some are just

  835. more emotionally

  836. charged, but you

  837. control how you

  838. respond.

  839. And what the

  840. spirit of God will

  841. help us do in this

  842. kind of thing is, he

  843. will help us to

  844. learn to act rather

  845. than react to the

  846. people in situations

  847. that sort of get us

  848. emotionally charged

  849. up.

  850. You know, trusting

  851. that God's in control

  852. will help us be more

  853. patient with people

  854. and with situations.

  855. Trusting that God

  856. really is sovereign,

  857. he's in control.

  858. This morning I was

  859. almost late to the

  860. first service because

  861. my truck wouldn't

  862. crank.

  863. Battery was dead.

  864. And believe it or

  865. not, I didn't just

  866. say ugly words, throw

  867. something around or do

  868. something like that.

  869. Because Lisa was

  870. there and I was just

  871. going, I just rode with

  872. her.

  873. That helped me out in

  874. that situation.

  875. But I want you to

  876. think, there's a

  877. reason why that

  878. battery didn't start.

  879. It may be that I

  880. cleaned it yesterday and

  881. I didn't tighten it

  882. back.

  883. But it may be that if

  884. I had gotten that

  885. truck this morning and

  886. needed a crank and I

  887. had come down here, I

  888. would have been killed.

  889. I don't know and I

  890. don't have, I don't

  891. worry, I don't spend

  892. any time wondering

  893. about what ifs because

  894. we don't know what

  895. these what ifs are.

  896. But God is sovereign.

  897. He's in control.

  898. Even about whether a

  899. battery starts or not.

  900. And what we need to do,

  901. what will help us, what

  902. helps me, and I don't

  903. always do this by any

  904. means, but what helps me

  905. when I do is to realize

  906. God is in control.

  907. There's a reason for

  908. this.

  909. I need to just act the

  910. way I should and not

  911. react, get all torn up

  912. out of shape because

  913. there's a purpose for

  914. it.

  915. I want you to look at

  916. what Paul tells us.

  917. We've looked at both of

  918. these verses many times

  919. over the years.

  920. We've looked at one of

  921. them every week in this

  922. series.

  923. We're going to look at

  924. them two verses

  925. together now.

  926. Look at this.

  927. And we know that in all

  928. things God works for the

  929. good of those who love

  930. Him, who have been

  931. called according to His

  932. purpose, and for those

  933. God foreknew He also

  934. predestined to be

  935. conformed to the image

  936. of His Son.

  937. God works in

  938. everything, people,

  939. situations, batteries,

  940. not starting.

  941. God works in every

  942. situation to shape and

  943. mold us to the person

  944. He wants us to be, which

  945. is ultimately like Jesus.

  946. If the love of Christ

  947. fills us, we will be

  948. motivated to be gracious

  949. by showing compassion,

  950. kindness, humility,

  951. gentleness, and patience

  952. toward the people in our

  953. lives, and especially

  954. other Christians.

  955. Look at one more thing

  956. real quick.

  957. Such graciousness will

  958. also lead us to bear

  959. with others.

  960. Look at this.

  961. Love will motivate us to

  962. bear with our brothers

  963. and sisters in Christ.

  964. Verse 13.

  965. Bearing with one another

  966. means to put up with

  967. somebody in a positive

  968. way.

  969. Have you ever thought

  970. about how much God

  971. puts up with you?

  972. I mean, if you have a

  973. realistic understanding of

  974. yourself, if you know who

  975. God is and His holiness,

  976. you know who you are as

  977. the sinner you are, you

  978. know God puts up with

  979. you.

  980. I'm thankful.

  981. I'm thankful that He does,

  982. that He's patient in spite

  983. of my disobedience,

  984. hard-heartedness,

  985. selfishness, and those kind

  986. of things.

  987. We need to learn to bear

  988. with each other just as

  989. God bears with us.

  990. When my boys were little,

  991. there were times I used to

  992. get mad, I used to get

  993. frustrated at them doing

  994. just foolish things, old

  995. enough to know better,

  996. trying my patience.

  997. I used to get so frustrated

  998. and do the same thing over

  999. and over again.

  1000. But there were times

  1001. when it was,

  1002. I didn't hear it,

1003. I never heard any kind

1004. of voice, but there were

1005. times it just occurred to

1006. me, I think God put it in

  1007. my mind,

  1008. that's how I put up with

  1009. you.

  1010. That's how you are

  1011. to me.

  1012. Stupid things,

1013. things you know not to do

  1014. repeatedly.

1015. It always made me stop and

1016. think how grateful I am

  1017. for God's grace

1018. and how I need to turn

  1019. that grace

  1020. toward them.

1021. That's what we need to do.

1022. No one in this church,

  1023. your house,

  1024. or anywhere you go

  1025. is perfect.

  1026. Even the most faithful

  1027. Christian that you know

1028. is still a working process.

  1029. Everyone in your life

  1030. needs for you

  1031. to bear with them.

  1032. Pray for them.

1033. And help them by showing

  1034. compassion,

  1035. kindness,

  1036. humility,

  1037. gentleness,

  1038. patience.

  1039. That's love.

1040. Now, let's wind it up.

1041. Remember what I pointed out

  1042. at the very beginning.

  1043. Everything in this passage

  1044. is talking about

  1045. what a Christian

  1046. is

  1047. by virtue

  1048. of being united

  1049. to Christ

  1050. and filled

  1051. with His Spirit.

  1052. We can't make ourselves

  1053. more loving

  1054. just by trying harder.

  1055. But we can become

  1056. more loving

  1057. like we're seeing

  1058. in this passage

  1059. by being more sensitive

  1060. to the presence

  1061. of the Holy Spirit

  1062. within us

  1063. and then obedient

  1064. to His leadership.

  1065. It's the Spirit

  1066. who gives us

  1067. the desire

  1068. and the ability

  1069. to love like this.

  1070. But we're responsible

  1071. to follow through

  1072. on these desires.

  1073. We're responsible

  1074. to use the power

  1075. He gives us

  1076. to deny ourselves

  1077. to show this kind

  1078. of love.

  1079. An old farmer

  1080. once said,

  1081. what comes up

  1082. in the bucket

  1083. is usually

  1084. what's down

  1085. in the well.

  1086. What comes up

  1087. in our attitudes,

  1088. words,

  1089. and actions

  1090. is usually

  1091. what's down

  1092. in the well

  1093. of our heart.

  1094. What does that say

  1095. about what's

  1096. in your heart

  1097. right now?

1098. Are you a true Christian

  1099. who is indwelled

1100. by the Spirit of God

  1101. and while none

  1102. of these qualities

  1103. are fully developed,

  1104. there is such love

  1105. within you

  1106. to some degree?

  1107. Or,

  1108. are you just someone

  1109. with a heart

  1110. that is filled

  1111. mostly with sinful desires,

  1112. selfishness,

  1113. and love for yourself,

  1114. more than others?

  1115. Let's pray.

  1116. Dear God,

  1117. I pray that you'll

1118. help each one of us

  1119. to see

  1120. the content

  1121. of our hearts

  1122. right now.

  1123. And Father,

  1124. if there's people

  1125. in this room

  1126. who,

1127. they have to be honest,

  1128. there's really

  1129. no signs

1130. of the kind of love

  1131. we've been looking at

  1132. within them.

  1133. But what is

  1134. within them

  1135. is just selfishness,

  1136. sinful desires,

  1137. little to no concern,

  1138. real concern

  1139. for other people.

  1140. Father,

  1141. if that's the content

  1142. of someone's heart,

  1143. help them to know

  1144. they cannot

  1145. be a Christian

  1146. because that shows

1147. that the Spirit of God

  1148. is not within them.

  1149. Father,

1150. I pray that you would

  1151. disturb them over that,

  1152. humble them,

  1153. cause them to admit

  1154. the truth,

  1155. to repent,

  1156. turn from,

  1157. change their minds

  1158. about such a life.

  1159. And dear God,

1160. so work to enable them

  1161. to call upon Jesus

  1162. to save them now.

  1163. Father,

  1164. for all of us

  1165. who are Christians

  1166. in this room,

  1167. help us to see

  1168. just how strong

  1169. these qualities

  1170. are right now

  1171. within us.

  1172. Father,

  1173. show us

  1174. where we need

  1175. to confess

  1176. our selfishness,

  1177. where we fail

  1178. to look at

  1179. and take an interest

  1180. in people.

  1181. help us,

  1182. Father,

  1183. to see where

  1184. we just refuse

  1185. to be sensitive

  1186. to the Spirit's

  1187. presence

  1188. and act on

  1189. His leading.

  1190. Help us

  1191. to confess

  1192. our sins,

  1193. to seek

  1194. Your forgiveness.

  1195. Help us,

  1196. Father,

  1197. to make the commitment

  1198. and start spending

  1199. more time with You

  1200. to develop

  1201. a greater sensitivity

  1202. to Your Spirit

  1203. and demonstrate

  1204. true obedience

  1205. that results

  1206. in us

  1207. loving people

  1208. around us

  1209. the way we've

  1210. seen this morning.

  1211. Let's just

  1212. in an attitude

  1213. of prayer

  1214. respond to the Lord

  1215. as He speaks.

  1216. I'd be happy

  1217. to pray with you

  1218. during this time.

  1219. I'll be here

  1220. at the front.

  1221. But what is

  1222. the main thing

  1223. is to hear God

  1224. and just obey Him.

  1225. Let's just pray

  1226. and respond.

  1227. Amen.
