  1. How difficult is it for you to forgive people?

  2. I'm talking about when somebody really hurts you,

  3. sins against you, intentionally.

  4. How would you describe the way you go about forgiving?

  5. Is your forgiveness based on your emotions?

  6. Is it according to how you feel at the time toward that person?

  7. Or is your forgiveness based on a commitment to forgive

  8. regardless of how you really feel about it?

  9. I want you to think about this one.

  10. Is your forgiveness conditional or unconditional?

  11. And then does your forgiveness,

  12. does it include restoring the relationship?

  13. Once they have sought your forgiveness,

  14. you tell them you've forgiven.

  15. Does your idea carry you to be reconciled?

  16. Or restore the relationship to where it was before the problem arose?

  17. We're going to answer those questions this morning

  18. as we look at how Paul describes forgiveness in Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  19. Forgiving people is one of the ways that we are to live in this world

  20. as God's special people.

  21. We've been looking at that the last couple of weeks

  22. in Colossians chapter 3, verses 12 through 14 in particular.

    Colossians 3:12–14

  23. We've been talking about how all of this

  24. showing compassion,

  25. being patient with people,

  26. bearing with people,

  27. and today forgiving people.

  28. This all really falls under the umbrella of loving people.

  29. If we have the love of Christ within us,

  30. we'll be compelled by the Spirit of God who lives in us

  31. to live this way,

  32. to treat people this way.

  33. Well, today we're going to spend all of our time

  34. looking at how we are to forgive others

  35. based on the way God has forgiven us

  36. as explained in Colossians chapter 3, verse 13,

    Colossians 3:13

  37. and a very similar verse

  38. in Ephesians chapter 4, verse 32.

    Ephesians 4:32

  39. I'm going to put both verses on the screen.

  40. Here's the first one.

  41. If one has a complaint against another,

  42. forgiving each other,

  43. as the Lord has forgiven you,

  44. so you also must forgive.

  45. And then Ephesians 4, verse 32.

    Ephesians 4:32

  46. Be kind to one another,

  47. tenderhearted,

  48. forgiving one another,

  49. as God in Christ forgave you.

  50. It's real clear, isn't it,

  51. that Paul's telling us

  52. that we should forgive others

  53. in the same way that God forgives us.

  54. So what we need to do to start with

  55. is think about,

  56. look at what the Bible says about

  57. how God forgives us.

  58. Let's do that.

  59. First, God's forgiveness is gracious,

  60. but it's costly.

  61. Let's look at what that means.

  62. God's forgiveness is gracious.

  63. That means it's undeserved.

  64. Grace is God's undeserved favor.

  65. We have all sinned against God.

  66. We've disobeyed His commandments.

  67. We've not lived life

  68. the way that He's told us to,

  69. or we've lived life

  70. the opposite of how He's told us to.

  71. Well, the Bible says

  72. it's a penalty for sin.

  73. Sin is breaking God's commandments.

  74. The Bible says

  75. that the penalty for sin is death,

  76. and ultimately that is

  77. separation from God

  78. for all eternity in hell.

  79. So,

  80. that's what we deserve.

  81. From God's perspective,

  82. and He's real clear in the Bible,

  83. we have sinned by disobeying Him,

  84. breaking His commandments.

  85. And He has declared

  86. that the penalty for sin

  87. is death.

  88. So,

  89. God would be just.

  90. He would be right.

  91. He would be fair

  92. from His perspective,

  93. which is the ultimate

  94. and the right perspective.

  95. God would be just

  96. and right and fair

  97. to just say,

  98. you've always wanted to live

  99. your way

  100. instead of my way.

  101. So,

  102. after we die,

  103. He just sort of says,

  104. well,

  105. you just continue on

  106. living life your way

  107. instead of my way.

  108. And that's hell.

  109. Living apart from God.

  110. Now,

  111. God would be just

  112. in doing that.

  113. It'd be like sort of

  114. we reap what we've sown.

  115. But God didn't just sit back

  116. and let us reap

  117. what we've sown

  118. in this way.

  119. He didn't just sit back

  120. and let justice run its course.

  121. God chose

  122. to be gracious

  123. and provide a way

  124. for us to be forgiven

  125. of our sins

  126. and not have to be punished.

  127. I want you to look at

  128. two of the verses,

  129. two verses that point out

  130. how God provided a way

  131. by grace,

  132. undeserved totally,

  133. for us to be forgiven.

  134. Look at Ephesians 2, 8.

  135. For by grace

  136. you've been saved

  137. through faith.

  138. And this is not

  139. your own doing,

  140. it's the gift of God.

  141. And then in Romans 3.

  142. For all have sinned

  143. and fall short

  144. of the glory of God

  145. and are justified

  146. by His grace

  147. as a gift

  148. through the redemption

  149. that is in Christ Jesus.

  150. Here's what we're

  151. trying to think about.

  152. How does God forgive?

  153. Well,

  154. God's forgiveness

  155. is gracious

  156. it is totally undeserved.

  157. Keep that in mind.

  158. But it doesn't mean

  159. that God ignores our sin.

  160. It doesn't mean

  161. that God says,

  162. ah, it really doesn't matter,

  163. just let it go.

  164. No, God's forgiveness

  165. is very costly.

  166. God so loved

  167. people like us

  168. that He sent His Son

  169. into this world

  170. to pay the penalty

  171. for our sins

  172. through His death

  173. on the cross.

  174. Look at how John

  175. describes this.

  176. In this is love.

  177. Not that we have loved God

  178. but that He loved us

  179. and sent His Son

  180. to be the propitiation

  181. for our sins.

  182. That word propitiation

  183. is never used

  184. outside of the Bible,

  185. is it?

  186. And a lot of translations

  187. translate it a different way.

  188. The NIV calls it

  189. atoning sacrifice.

  190. Well, here's what it means.

  191. Jesus experienced

  192. the full wrath of God

  193. as He hung on the cross.

  194. Look at it.

  195. For our sins.

  196. We've sinned against God.

  197. The penalty for sin

  198. is death.

  199. Ultimately,

  200. it's separation from God.

  201. As Jesus hung on the cross,

  202. God unleashed

  203. His just

  204. and righteous wrath

  205. against sin.

  206. And Jesus cried out,

  207. My God, my God,

  208. why have you forsaken me?

  209. He was experiencing

  210. that wrath.

  211. He was experiencing God

  212. as the wrath giver,

  213. not His Father

  214. at that time.

  215. That's why He cried out,

  216. My God, my God,

  217. why have you forsaken me?

  218. A little bit later on

  219. from the cross,

  220. He cried out,

  221. It is finished.

  222. Which means He

  223. took the wrath

  224. fully.

  225. He completely

  226. paid the penalty

  227. for our sins.

  228. It's over

  229. and done with.

  230. God graciously

  231. offers

  232. this costly forgiveness

  233. to all

  234. who will accept it

  235. on His terms.

  236. That's the second thing

  237. we need to see

  238. about God's forgiveness.

  239. God's forgiveness

  240. is conditional.

  241. We must first

  242. repent of our sin

  243. and trust Jesus

  244. as our Savior and Lord.

  245. If God's forgiveness

  246. is unconditional,

  247. it means everybody's safe.

  248. That's universalism.

  249. You don't believe that.

  250. You wouldn't be here today.

  251. The reason to be here today,

  252. if you believe

  253. everybody is saved

  254. because God's

  255. just a good guy

  256. and He just decides

  257. to say,

  258. don't worry about sin

  259. and rebellion

  260. and evil

  261. and wickedness,

  262. just let it go.

  263. No.

  264. God is gracious,

  265. but His forgiveness

  266. is costly.

  267. It costs the death

  268. of His Son.

  269. It is offered to us

  270. as a gift

  271. on the condition

  272. that we repent,

  273. turn from our sin

  274. and trust Jesus

  275. as our Savior and Lord.

  276. Unfortunately,

  277. repentance

  278. is not always emphasized

  279. as it should be

  280. in explaining the gospel,

  281. but repentance

  282. is essential.

  283. I want you to note

  284. how Jesus began

  285. His public ministry.

  286. In the first chapter

  287. of Mark,

  288. Mark says

  289. that Jesus came

  290. into Galilee

  291. proclaiming the gospel

  292. of God and saying

  293. the time is fulfilled

  294. and the kingdom

  295. of God is at hand,

  296. repent and believe

  297. in the gospel.

  298. Paul gave a statement

  299. in Acts chapter 20.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  300. He was talking

  301. to the leaders

  302. of the church

  303. at Ephesus

  304. and he was explaining

  305. what he had been preaching

  306. throughout his ministry.

  307. He explained

  308. how he had called people

  309. to look at it,

  310. repent and believe.

  311. Look at this

  312. from Acts chapter 20.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  313. Paul says,

  314. I have declared

  315. to both Jews

  316. and Greeks

  317. and as he wrote that,

  318. what he meant was

  319. to everybody

  320. under the sun.

  321. I have declared

  322. to both Jews

  323. and Greeks

  324. everywhere I've ever preached

  325. that they must turn

  326. to God in repentance

  327. and have faith

  328. in our Lord Jesus.

  329. Salvation

  330. and forgiveness

  331. of sin

  332. are freely offered

  333. to all

  334. who will

  335. meet

  336. God's condition.

  337. Repentance

  338. and faith.

  339. They go together

  340. like two sides

  341. of one coin.

  342. We must repent

  343. of our sin

  344. in order to be saved.

  345. I want you to look

  346. at how this is explained,

  347. the word repentance

  348. by Wayne Grudem.

  349. A great definition,

  350. comprehensive definition

  351. that explains

  352. really what it is.

  353. Repentance

  354. is a heartfelt sorrow

  355. for sin,

  356. a renouncing

  357. of it,

  358. and a sincere commitment

  359. to forsake it

  360. and walk

  361. in obedience

  362. to Christ.

  363. The idea is

  364. when we hear

  365. the gospel,

  366. whether it's

  367. through preaching,

  368. somebody,

  369. through a personal

  370. conversation,

  371. read the Bible

  372. or whatever,

  373. when we

  374. understand

  375. who Jesus is

  376. and what He's done,

  377. how we can be saved,

  378. God works

  379. in us

  380. to give us

  381. the desire

  382. to repent

  383. of our sin

  384. like this.

  385. If you're

  386. a Christian

  387. right now,

  388. you have

  389. a desire

  390. to turn

  391. from sin,

  392. to renounce

  393. it,

  394. to want to live

  395. life as a

  396. follower,

  397. obedient follower

  398. of Jesus

  399. and not a rebel

  400. against God.

  401. That's a work

  402. of the Spirit

  403. of God.

  404. He gives us

  405. the ability,

  406. the desire

  407. to repent,

  408. turn from our sin,

  409. hate our sin,

  410. and then

  411. trust Jesus

  412. as our Lord

  413. and our Savior.

  414. And I want us

  415. to understand

  416. that saving faith

  417. is an

  418. obeying faith.

  419. We love Jesus.

  420. We trust Jesus.

  421. We want to follow Him.

  422. We want to be like Him.

  423. We want to please Him.

  424. It's like He died

  425. for us,

  426. so we want to live

  427. for Him.

  428. It's a way of expressing

  429. our gratitude

  430. and our love.

  431. So God's forgiveness,

  432. we're talking about

  433. we forgive like God

  434. forgives.

  435. God's forgiveness

  436. is conditional.

  437. It requires

  438. repentance

  439. as well as

  440. faith in Jesus.

  441. Now,

  442. the next aspect

  443. of God's forgiveness

  444. is very comforting.

  445. And some of you,

  446. this may be something

  447. you just need to

  448. take and embrace

  449. and thank God for.

  450. Look at it.

  451. God's forgiveness

  452. includes a commitment

  453. that He will no longer

  454. hold our sins

  455. against us.

  456. He expresses this

  457. in several places

  458. in Scripture

  459. in terms of

  460. not remembering

  461. our sins.

  462. Look at it.

  463. When God forgives,

  464. He promises

  465. to remember

  466. our sins

  467. no more.

  468. The book of Hebrews

  469. records this twice.

  470. Look at it.

  471. For I will forgive

  472. their wickedness

  473. and will remember

  474. their sins

  475. no more.

  476. And then the second quote

  477. is a

  478. word-for-word quote

  479. from Jeremiah 31,

    Jeremiah 31:34

  480. verse 34.

  481. Their sins

  482. and lawless acts

  483. I will remember

  484. no more.

  485. Now,

  486. let's think about

  487. what that means.

  488. If I tell you

  489. that I don't remember

  490. something,

  491. I don't remember it.

  492. And it's embarrassing

  493. sometimes

  494. you may have

  495. told me something

  496. maybe a few months ago.

  497. Let's be honest,

  498. maybe a few weeks ago.

  499. And it comes back up

  500. and there's just

  501. some things

  502. I just don't remember.

  503. It's embarrassing.

  504. I hate it.

  505. But I don't.

  506. That never happens

  507. to God.

  508. God always remembers.

  509. He can't not

  510. know something

  511. past,

  512. present,

  513. or future.

  514. So when the scripture

  515. says that God says

  516. I will remember

  517. no more,

  518. that means

  519. he chooses

  520. to forget,

  521. to lay it aside,

  522. leave it alone,

  523. and not bring it

  524. back up

  525. in our lives.

  526. That's how God

  527. forgives you.

  528. If you are a Christian,

  529. God has forgiven you

  530. of your sin.

  531. You may have done

  532. something that is so

  533. terrible,

  534. awful,

  535. hurtful to someone,

  536. so embarrassing,

  537. humiliating,

  538. shaming,

  539. that you just

  540. have a hard time

  541. letting it go.

  542. Well, I want you

  543. to understand

  544. God doesn't.

  545. He forgives.

  546. He leaves it

  547. in the past.

  548. You need to do that.

  549. If you have truly

  550. come to him

  551. in repentance,

  552. turned from that sin,

  553. leave it

  554. in the past.

  555. Don't

  556. recall it,

  557. relive it,

  558. and don't

  559. carry on

  560. more guilt

  561. because of it.

  562. God forgives.

  563. He cleanses you.

  564. He sets you

  565. free from

  566. the guilt

  567. and the penalty

  568. for that sin.

  569. Let yourself

  570. be that way

  571. and listen to this.

  572. We'll look at it

  573. in more detail

  574. in a moment.

  575. You've got to do

  576. the same for other people.

  577. But this is not

  578. the best part

  579. of forgiveness.

  580. Look at what's next.

  581. God's forgiveness

  582. results in his

  583. reconciling us

  584. to himself.

  585. When God forgives us,

  586. he restores us

  587. to a right relationship

  588. with himself.

  589. He makes us

  590. his children.

  591. That's what

  592. reconciliation's

  593. all about,

  594. restoring a right

  595. relationship.

  596. The Apostle John

  597. comforts us

  598. by stressing

  599. our relationship

  600. to God

  601. is a relationship

  602. between

  603. the father

  604. and children.

  605. Look at it.

  606. See what kind

  607. of love

  608. the father

  609. has given

  610. to us

  611. that we should

  612. be called

  613. children of God

  614. and so we are.

  615. When God

  616. saves us,

  617. forgives us,

  618. he draws us

  619. to himself.

  620. He makes us

  621. his children.

  622. Now,

  623. as Christians,

  624. children of God,

  625. we still sin,

  626. don't we?

  627. We still

  628. disobey.

  629. We still

  630. don't do

  631. everything we

  632. know to do

  633. to please God.

  634. When that happens,

  635. it breaks

  636. our fellowship

  637. with God,

  638. but it does

  639. not destroy

  640. our relationship.

  641. God has promised

  642. in his word,

  643. I will never

  644. leave you

  645. nor forsake you.

  646. God makes

  647. us his,

  648. we are

  649. eternally

  650. his.

  651. We can

  652. count on

  653. that,

  654. but

  655. when we

  656. sin,

  657. it does

  658. interrupt

  659. the closeness

  660. of our

  661. fellowship.

  662. Sometimes

  663. it just

  664. shatters

  665. our fellowship

  666. when we sin

  667. and rebel

  668. against him.

  669. Here's what

  670. we need to

  671. understand.

  672. Even if you

  673. have rebelled

  674. against God,

  675. maybe you're

  676. in that condition

  677. right now,

  678. you can be

  679. forgiven

  680. and have

  681. that fellowship

  682. restored.

  683. One of the

  684. most helpful

  685. verses of

  686. scripture in

  687. the whole

  688. Bible is

  689. 1 John

    1 John 1:9

  690. chapter 1

  691. verse 9.

  692. We all

  693. need to

  694. know that

  695. verse,

  696. be thankful

  697. for that

  698. verse.

  699. Look at it.

  700. If we confess

  701. our sins,

  702. he is faithful

  703. and just to

  704. forgive us

  705. our sins

  706. and to

  707. cleanse us

  708. from all

  709. unrighteousness.

  710. as his

  711. children,

  712. we come

  713. to him

  714. in confession.

  715. It means

  716. we agree

  717. with him

  718. about our

  719. sin.

  720. He carries

  721. with it

  722. the idea

  723. of repentance

  724. as well.

  725. We turn

  726. from it

  727. and when

  728. that happens,

  729. when we do

  730. that,

  731. God forgives,

  732. God cleanses

  733. us.

  734. He gives

  735. us a fresh

  736. start.

  737. Now,

  738. genuine

  739. confession

  740. will include

  741. turning from

  742. our sin.

  743. So what I

  744. want us to

  745. see here

  746. is that

  747. in all

  748. cases where

  749. we sin

  750. against God,

  751. our forgiveness

  752. is always

  753. conditional.

  754. We've got to

  755. confess it,

  756. agree with

  757. God about it.

  758. We've got to

  759. repent,

  760. change your

  761. mind,

  762. grieve over

  763. it,

  764. hate it,

  765. turn from

  766. it.

  767. If you are

  768. separated from

  769. God right now

  770. by your sin,

  771. I want you to

  772. know that

  773. God desires

  774. to forgive

  775. you.

  776. No matter

  777. what has

  778. happened,

  779. if you're

  780. not a

  781. Christian,

  782. turn from

  783. your sin,

  784. change your

  785. mind about

  786. it.

  787. And if God's

  788. working in your

  789. heart,

  790. He'll give you

  791. the desire

  792. to do this.

  793. He'll cause

  794. you to hate

  795. it,

  796. to not want

  797. to live

  798. that way.

  799. Put your

  800. faith in

  801. Jesus,

  802. that He

  803. paid the

  804. penalty for

  805. your sin

  806. when He died

  807. on the

  808. cross.

  809. Call upon

  810. Him to

  811. save you

  812. now.

  813. If you

  814. are a

  815. Christian,

  816. but you're

  817. out of

  818. fellowship

  819. with God

  820. this moment,

  821. you don't

  822. have to go

  823. another moment

  824. living that

  825. way.

  826. Confess

  827. your sin.

  828. Turn from

  829. it.

  830. God will

  831. forgive you

  832. now.

  833. He'll

  834. cleanse you

  835. now.

  836. He'll draw

  837. you close

  838. to Himself

  839. now.

  840. He will

  841. give you

  842. a fresh

  843. start as

  844. you leave

  845. here today

  846. as His

  847. child living

  848. in close

  849. fellowship

  850. with Him.

  851. Now,

  852. in light of

  853. what we know

  854. about God's

  855. forgiveness,

  856. let's look at

  857. how we are

  858. supposed to

  859. forgive others.

  860. How are we

  861. to forgive?

  862. Number one,

  863. we are to

  864. forgive graciously

  865. just as God

  866. forgives.

  867. Since God

  868. doesn't require

  869. that we be

  870. deserving

  871. in order for

  872. Him to

  873. forgive us,

  874. we cannot

  875. require that

  876. another person

  877. be deserving

  878. of our

  879. forgiveness.

  880. That means we

  881. can't write

  882. anyone off

  883. with the

  884. attitude,

  885. they have

  886. hurt me so

  887. bad,

  888. the wounds

  889. are so deep,

  890. I just

  891. could never

  892. ever bring

  893. myself to

  894. forgive them.

  895. if that's,

  896. if you're a

  897. Christian,

  898. you cannot

  899. think that

  900. way and be

  901. right with

  902. God.

  903. You can be

  904. wounded deeply,

  905. hurt terribly,

  906. and find it

  907. very, very

  908. difficult to

  909. even think

  910. about forgiving.

  911. If you're a

  912. Christian and

  913. dwell by the

  914. Spirit of

  915. God,

  916. you can

  917. show

  918. grace.

  919. that person,

  920. you never

  921. say they're

  922. worthy.

  923. You don't

  924. pretend they're

  925. not what

  926. they are,

  927. haven't done

  928. what they

  929. did,

  930. but if they

  931. come seeking

  932. genuinely your

  933. forgiveness,

  934. show them

  935. grace.

  936. Show them

  937. grace like

  938. God showed

  939. you.

  940. But like

  941. God's

  942. forgiveness,

  943. our forgiveness

  944. is not

  945. unconditional.

  946. We're to

  947. forgive those

  948. who express

  949. repentance.

  950. This is

  951. probably the

  952. most misunderstood

  953. part of

  954. forgiveness,

  955. but it

  956. shouldn't be.

  957. If we're to

  958. forgive,

  959. think about it,

  960. if we're to

  961. forgive as

  962. God forgives

  963. us,

  964. our forgiveness

  965. is not

  966. automatic.

  967. God's forgiveness

  968. is not

  969. automatic.

  970. God's forgiveness

  971. is dependent on

  972. a person

  973. repenting.

  974. So our

  975. forgiveness is

  976. dependent on

  977. the person who

  978. has wronged

  979. us expressing

  980. repentance.

  981. Jesus taught

  982. the necessity

  983. of repentance

  984. in personal

  985. relationships in

  986. order forgiveness

  987. to be granted.

  988. I want you to

  989. look at Luke

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  990. chapter 17.

  991. Luke 17.

  992. Jesus says,

  993. pay attention

  994. to yourselves.

  995. If your

  996. brother sins,

  997. rebuke him.

  998. And if he

  999. repents,

  1000. forgive him.

  1001. If he sins

  1002. against you

  1003. seven times

  1004. in the day

  1005. and turns to

  1006. you seven times

  1007. saying,

  1008. I repent,

  1009. you must

  1010. forgive him.

  1011. Jesus emphasizes

  1012. that they

  1013. repent

  1014. before you

  1015. forgive.

  1016. forgive.

  1017. There's a

  1018. similar passage

  1019. in Matthew

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  1020. chapter 18.

  1021. And in

  1022. Matthew 18,

  1023. Jesus describes

  1024. what a lot of

  1025. people refer to

  1026. as the way

  1027. of church

  1028. discipline.

  1029. But Jesus

  1030. just basically

  1031. said,

  1032. if someone

  1033. sins against

  1034. you,

  1035. go to him,

  1036. point out

  1037. the error

  1038. of his

  1039. way.

  1040. And if

  1041. he'll listen,

  1042. if he'll

  1043. repent,

  1044. if he'll seek

  1045. to make

  1046. amends,

  1047. you've won

  1048. your brother

  1049. over,

  1050. Jesus says.

  1051. If he

  1052. doesn't,

  1053. take two

  1054. or three

  1055. with you.

  1056. Try to get

  1057. it worked

  1058. out between

  1059. the two

  1060. or three

  1061. of you

  1062. and the

  1063. offender.

  1064. But if

  1065. he says

  1066. no,

  1067. then you

  1068. take the

  1069. matter to

  1070. the church

  1071. and if

  1072. he's still

  1073. hard-hearted

  1074. and refuses

  1075. to deal

  1076. properly with

  1077. what the

  1078. offense he's

  1079. sinned against

  1080. you about,

  1081. Jesus said

  1082. he put him

  1083. out.

  1084. You look at

  1085. him as a

  1086. Gentile and a

  1087. tax collector,

  1088. literally is what

  1089. he said,

  1090. which means

  1091. you just

  1092. write him

  1093. off because

  1094. he's not

  1095. repented.

  1096. He's not

  1097. sought forgiveness.

  1098. He's not

  1099. sought reconciliation.

  1100. Now,

  1101. if you're

  1102. going to go

  1103. to sleep,

  1104. don't go

  1105. to sleep

  1106. now.

  1107. Don't just

  1108. hear that

  1109. and say,

  1110. yes,

  1111. there's some

  1112. people that

  1113. will not,

  1114. they've wronged

  1115. me and they

  1116. don't care.

  1117. I hate their

  1118. guts and he's

  1119. just affirmed I

  1120. can hate their

  1121. guts.

  1122. No.

  1123. If you

  1124. say,

  1125. I said that,

  1126. I'm going

  1127. to look at

  1128. you and say,

  1129. you are a

  1130. liar.

  1131. Hear me

  1132. clear because

  1133. somebody's going

  1134. to take this

  1135. and say,

  1136. I don't have

  1137. to worry about

  1138. it anymore.

  1139. You do.

  1140. You can't

  1141. just write

  1142. someone off

  1143. even if they

  1144. don't repent.

  1145. There is

  1146. no license

  1147. for Christians

  1148. mistreating

  1149. other people.

  1150. I want you

  1151. to look at

  1152. how Paul

  1153. describes how

  1154. we must

  1155. respond to

  1156. people who

  1157. have wronged

  1158. us and the

  1159. implication is

  1160. and they

  1161. don't care.

  1162. They wronged

  1163. us and meant

  1164. to and they're

  1165. not sorry.

  1166. Look at what

  1167. Paul says.

  1168. It's in Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  1169. chapter 12,

  1170. one of the

  1171. great passages

  1172. in all the

  1173. scripture,

  1174. Romans 12,

  1175. the whole

  1176. chapter about

  1177. living a

  1178. Christian life,

  1179. living a life

  1180. to please God.

  1181. Here's what

  1182. he says.

  1183. Repay no one

  1184. evil for evil

  1185. but give thought

  1186. to do what is

  1187. honorable in the

  1188. sight of all.

  1189. If possible,

  1190. so far as it

  1191. depends on you,

  1192. live peaceably

  1193. with all.

  1194. Beloved,

  1195. never avenge

  1196. yourselves but

  1197. leave it to the

  1198. wrath of God.

  1199. For it is written,

  1200. vengeance is mine,

  1201. I will repay,

  1202. says the Lord.

  1203. To the contrary,

  1204. if your enemy is

  1205. hungry, feed him.

  1206. If he is thirsty,

  1207. give him something

  1208. to drink.

  1209. For by doing so,

  1210. you will heap

  1211. burning coals on

  1212. his head.

  1213. Do not be

  1214. overcome by evil

  1215. but overcome

  1216. evil with good.

  1217. That's even

  1218. towards your enemy,

  1219. the one who

  1220. doesn't care if

  1221. they've hurt you.

  1222. If someone

  1223. wrongs us

  1224. and refuses

  1225. to repent,

  1226. we are not

  1227. obligated to

  1228. forgive them

  1229. and act as if

  1230. everything is

  1231. okay,

  1232. act as if

  1233. it doesn't

  1234. matter.

  1235. We're not.

  1236. But at the

  1237. same time,

  1238. we're not

  1239. allowed to

  1240. mistreat them.

  1241. Even if they're

  1242. unrepentant,

  1243. we've got to be

  1244. ready and willing

  1245. to forgive them

  1246. if at some

  1247. point they do

  1248. repent.

  1249. But until

  1250. them,

  1251. you don't have

  1252. to pretend

  1253. everything's okay

  1254. because it's

  1255. not.

  1256. But what we

  1257. do have to

  1258. do is just

  1259. trust God

  1260. to deal with

  1261. them.

  1262. This seems to

  1263. be Paul's

  1264. response to

  1265. someone who

  1266. wronged him

  1267. and did not

  1268. repent.

  1269. I want you to

  1270. look at this.

  1271. The Apostle Paul

  1272. writing to

  1273. Timothy.

  1274. He's about to

  1275. be executed,

  1276. Paul is.

  1277. The last letter,

  1278. he knows it's

  1279. coming.

  1280. And in this

  1281. letter, he

  1282. says,

  1283. Alexander the

  1284. coppersmith did

  1285. me great harm.

  1286. The Lord will

  1287. repay him

  1288. according to

  1289. his deeds.

  1290. Does that sound

  1291. like somebody who

  1292. wronged Paul and

  1293. was repentant?

  1294. Obviously not.

  1295. He did me great

  1296. harm.

  1297. The Lord will

  1298. repay him according

  1299. to his deeds.

  1300. And then he tells

  1301. Timothy,

  1302. beware of him

  1303. yourself for he

  1304. strongly opposed

  1305. our message.

  1306. Paul didn't

  1307. think about

  1308. Alexander the

  1309. coppersmith and

  1310. say, well,

  1311. it'll be okay.

  1312. No.

  1313. He's writing to

  1314. Timothy and

  1315. saying, this guy

  1316. did me wrong.

  1317. God's going to

  1318. take care of him.

  1319. Don't you trust

  1320. him either.

  1321. You be aware of

  1322. him.

  1323. He is opposed to

  1324. me, you, and

  1325. the gospel.

  1326. He's opposed to

  1327. God and God's

  1328. word, God's

  1329. truth.

  1330. So you watch

  1331. out.

  1332. Now, before we

  1333. move on, don't

  1334. forget what we

  1335. started out saying.

  1336. If someone wrongs

  1337. you and they do

  1338. repent, they do

  1339. seek forgiveness,

  1340. you've got to

  1341. forgive them.

  1342. we're obligated to

  1343. choose to forgive

  1344. them regardless of

  1345. how we feel about

  1346. it.

  1347. Now, let's look at

  1348. the next way we

  1349. must forgive as God

  1350. forgives.

  1351. We're to forgive and

  1352. no longer hold the

  1353. person's sin or

  1354. wrongdoing against

  1355. them.

  1356. Think about this.

  1357. Forgiving someone

  1358. does not mean that

  1359. we'll be able to

  1360. forget what happens.

  1361. us.

  1362. Forgetting does

  1363. not mean, or

  1364. forgiving rather

  1365. does not mean we

  1366. will have warm

  1367. feelings for

  1368. someone, someone

  1369. who hurt us,

  1370. wronged us.

  1371. The Bible, in

  1372. talking about

  1373. Christian living,

  1374. talking about

  1375. everything, but in

  1376. talking about

  1377. Christian living, the

  1378. Bible never tells us

  1379. to pretend anything.

  1380. There are some

  1381. people who may have

  1382. so hurt you, wounded

  1383. you, sinned against

  1384. you, that there is

  1385. pain to just think

  1386. about them.

  1387. You don't want to

  1388. even look at them.

1389. But if they come to

  1390. you and seek your

  1391. forgiveness, as

  1392. Christians, we are

  1393. obligated to grant

  1394. forgiveness.

  1395. Forgiveness is a

  1396. commitment.

  1397. It's undeserved.

  1398. It's hard, but it's

1399. what God calls us to.

  1400. Now, forgiveness is a

  1401. commitment that we

  1402. make that we will

  1403. respond to someone

  1404. like this.

1405. I will not bring up

  1406. their wrongdoing to

  1407. them again.

  1408. If you really

  1409. forgive your

  1410. spouse, this is

  1411. where a lot of

  1412. this comes up.

  1413. If you really

  1414. forgive your

  1415. spouse, when you

1416. get mad or in the

  1417. heat of an

  1418. argument, you

  1419. can't throw up

  1420. what's already been

  1421. forgiven and be

  1422. right with God.

  1423. That's not playing

  1424. fair.

  1425. That's not how we

  1426. as God's people can

  1427. treat people.

  1428. Forgiveness is a

  1429. commitment that says

  1430. I'm not going to

  1431. dwell on, think

  1432. about, keep on

  1433. rehearsing what they

  1434. did.

1435. I'm going to let it

  1436. go.

  1437. Forgiveness is a

  1438. commitment that says

  1439. I will not allow

  1440. their wrongdoing to

  1441. prevent us from being

  1442. reconciled.

  1443. And that's the next

  1444. point.

1445. We are to forgive and

  1446. be reconciled to the

  1447. offender.

  1448. Forgiving as God

  1449. forgives does not

  1450. allow us to forgive

  1451. someone and then

  1452. avoid them for the

  1453. rest of our lives.

  1454. When we truly

  1455. forgive as God

  1456. forgives, we will

  1457. seek to be reconciled

  1458. to the one who

  1459. wronged us.

  1460. We will seek with

  1461. God's help to have

  1462. our relationship

  1463. restored.

  1464. Now, there are some

  1465. situations where

  1466. reconciliation will

  1467. not result in

  1468. restored closeness.

1469. Let me give you one

  1470. example and you can

1471. take it and apply it

  1472. to other situations.

  1473. Suppose a man and

  1474. woman, husband and

  1475. wife, they go through

  1476. a bitter divorce.

  1477. One deeply wounded and

  1478. wronged to the other

  1479. one.

  1480. They divorce.

  1481. They go their

  1482. separate ways.

  1483. They each remarry.

  1484. Well, somewhere down

1485. the road, the one who

1486. was, who did the, who

  1487. broke the heart, who

  1488. did the wrong, gets

  1489. convicted of it.

  1490. They've sinned and they

  1491. seek God's forgiveness

1492. and they go to their

  1493. ex-spouse and admit

  1494. their wrong and seek

  1495. their forgiveness.

  1496. forgiveness.

  1497. They better not get

  1498. back together as close

1499. as they were when they

  1500. were married again.

  1501. They can be

  1502. reconciled, but their

  1503. relationship will not be

  1504. restored.

  1505. They're already

  1506. married.

  1507. Forgive, grant

  1508. forgiveness, have no

  1509. bitterness, but go your

  1510. separate ways.

  1511. There may be some

  1512. situations where you

  1513. forgive.

  1514. You let it go.

  1515. You forgive as God

  1516. forgives.

  1517. But the situation is

1518. such where it would not

  1519. be healthy emotionally,

  1520. spiritually, or even

  1521. physically for the

  1522. relationship to be

1523. restored to what it was

  1524. before, the abuse.

  1525. for an example that

  1526. took place.

1527. But as a general rule,

  1528. when we forgive someone,

1529. our goal needs to be

  1530. that our relationship

  1531. with them is restored.

1532. It may take a lot of

  1533. time.

1534. It may take a lot of

  1535. prayer.

1536. It may take a lot of

  1537. effort on our part.

  1538. But full forgiveness

  1539. includes reconciliation.

  1540. reconciliation.

  1541. That's how God forgives.

  1542. Now, quickly, when it

1543. comes to the subject of

  1544. forgiving others, some

1545. people need to be reminded

1546. that it's not good or

1547. healthy to be a person who

  1548. is easily offended.

1549. It's not good or healthy

1550. for you to walk around and

1551. just expect people to hurt

  1552. your feelings, to offend

  1553. you.

  1554. The least little thing

  1555. bothers you.

1556. In fact, if everywhere you

1557. go in life, if at church,

  1558. in family gatherings, among

1559. your friends at work, if

1560. everywhere you go in life,

  1561. you just feel like, I'm a

  1562. victim.

  1563. I'm always being wronged.

1564. Most likely, you are the

  1565. problem.

  1566. Here's an important verse

1567. for every single one of us,

1568. but especially if you walk

1569. around with this chip on

  1570. your shoulder.

  1571. Look at this.

1572. Above all, keep loving one

  1573. another earnestly since love

1574. covers a multitude of sins.

  1575. There's a lot of things that

1576. takes place between you and

1577. your spouse, you and your

1578. friend, you and people you

1579. work with, people you go to

  1580. school with.

  1581. There's a lot of things that

1582. happen that sort of bother

1583. you, but you just need to let

  1584. it go.

  1585. Because it's really not a big

  1586. deal.

  1587. The person probably didn't

1588. even think about what they

  1589. were saying or doing.

1590. Love covers a multitude of

  1591. sins.

  1592. I'm thankful I've lived in a

1593. home where my wife practices

1594. love covering a multitude of

  1595. sins.

1596. I'd have more scars on me than I

1597. have right now if she didn't.

1598. And I'm going to guess by the

1599. looks on some of y'all's

  1600. face, you've experienced the

1601. same thing in your house.

  1602. We need that.

  1603. It's healthy.

1604. But when we are wronged or

1605. sinned against in a serious

1606. way, we are called as God's

1607. people to forgive others just

1608. as God has forgiven us.

  1609. Let's pray about it.

1610. Father, I pray for people in

1611. this room right now who do not

1612. have a relationship with you.

1613. People who are not Christians

  1614. and they know it.

1615. Help them to understand that you

1616. are a gracious and loving God and

1617. in spite of their sin, their

  1618. rebellion, their indifference.

1619. You sent Jesus into this world to

  1620. die for them.

1621. While they were still sinners,

1622. Christ died for them, your word

  1623. says.

1624. Call them to trust Jesus, to turn

1625. from their sin, to truly repent.

1626. Call them to embrace Jesus as their

1627. Lord and Savior right now, I pray

  1628. to your God.

1629. Father, if there are Christians in

1630. this room who, for whatever

1631. reason, there's sin in their

1632. life that has caused a disruption

1633. in their fellowship with you.

1634. Dear God, make it clear to them

1635. that they must humble themselves,

1636. admit their sin, and turn from it

1637. in order to experience your

1638. forgiveness and a restoration to

  1639. full fellowship.

1640. But help them, dear God, to know

1641. there's no better way to live, no

1642. better thing for them to do this

1643. morning than to do that very

1644. thing, to confess their sins, to

1645. forsake them, to draw close to you,

1646. to renew their commitment to Jesus

1647. as their Lord and Savior.

1648. And Father, I pray for Christians in

1649. this room who are struggling to

1650. forgive someone in their life right

  1651. now.

1652. Father, help them to know that it

1653. very well may be true that they have

  1654. been hurt deeply.

1655. But Lord, help them, give them the

1656. grace to be willing to forgive as you

  1657. forgive.

  1658. Amen.

1659. And just in an attitude of prayer now,

1660. let's just listen to the Lord and

  1661. respond to Him.

1662. If I could pray with you during

1663. this time, I would be happy to do

1664. that here at the front.

  1665. Amen.

  1666. Lewis

  1667. Thank you.
