  1. What kind of goals do you have for yourself?

  2. Now I'm going to guess a lot of people in this room,

  3. we have financial goals.

  4. Some people, your goals to get out of debt

  5. maybe this year or as soon as possible.

  6. Some people have goals related to retirement.

  7. And that is, that's good.

  8. It is good to have financial goals.

  9. What would be bad is if that's the only kind of goal you have.

  10. We need to have career goals, educational goals.

  11. We need to have goals as the kind of husband or wife or parent

  12. God wants me to be.

  13. The kind of child living with your parents

  14. that God wants you to be.

  15. It's good to have goals

  16. about a lot of different areas of our lives.

  17. But I want to ask you,

  18. what are your goals specifically as a Christian?

  19. What is it that you want God to do in you?

  20. What is it you are praying and asking God to help you to be,

  21. what are your goals for you to do?

  22. We've been looking now since the first Sunday in January

  23. at God's goals for us.

  24. Really the Bible is filled with God's goals for His people.

  25. Now, we're looking at it,

  26. Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3:1–17

  27. verses 1 through 17.

  28. We're looking at it under a big topic.

  29. You see on the screen,

  30. God's goals for you

  31. are never just for the year,

  32. like a New Year's resolution or a New Year's goal.

  33. God's goals for you this hour,

  34. this day,

  35. this year,

  36. and on and on as long as we live.

  37. This study is really about

  38. developing Christ-like character,

  39. which is God's number one goal for us.

  40. I put it on the screen just about every week.

  41. I'm going to do it again today

  42. because we need to understand

  43. what God is doing in our lives if we're Christians.

  44. For those whom He foreknew,

  45. set His heart on in a favorable way.

  46. Very similar to the word chosen.

  47. For those whom He foreknew,

  48. He also predestined

  49. to be conformed to the image of His Son.

  50. This is what God's doing in every Christian's life.

  51. He is working in our lives

  52. through every kind of situation possible,

  53. through the people in our lives.

  54. He's working through the good times and the bad

  55. to shape and mold us into the likeness of His Son.

  56. And I like to think of it in terms of us

  57. developing Christ-like character.

  58. Well, Colossians 3

  59. helps us to see some of the ways

  60. God works in us

  61. to accomplish this.

  62. We've looked at this passage,

  63. verses 1 through 17,

  64. in terms of three goals God has for us.

  65. Number one,

  66. be mindful of who you are in Christ.

  67. I'll remind you one more time.

  68. This whole series is designed

  69. for Christians.

  70. We have to,

  71. for this to make sense,

  72. to work.

  73. We have to be united to Christ

  74. by faith.

  75. We have to be one with Him.

  76. And we need to know

  77. who we are in Christ.

  78. That's what

  79. verses 1 through 4

  80. is all about.

  81. The second goal,

  82. don't be who you are

  83. apart from Christ.

  84. We still have a sinful nature.

  85. We have sinful desires.

  86. We are tempted.

  87. And what we need to understand

  88. is who we are in Christ.

  89. We can resist any temptation.

  90. In fact,

  91. we're told in this passage,

  92. verses 5 through 10,

  93. to put off

  94. sinful habits

  95. and desires.

  96. And then in goal number three,

  97. put on some things.

  98. Look at goal number three.

  99. Become more like Christ

  100. every day.

  101. This is how we put on

  102. Christ-like character qualities

  103. with the grace God gives us

  104. to do that.

  105. We're going to conclude

  106. goal number three

  107. this morning

  108. by looking at how

  109. we can become like Christ

  110. every day.

  111. We've already looked

  112. at the fact

  113. that if we're united

  114. to Christ by faith,

  115. we are

  116. God's special people.

  117. In verse 12,

  118. let me remind you,

  119. God declares

  120. that we are,

  121. or Paul declares

  122. that we are

  123. God's chosen one.

  124. God's chosen people

  125. from the foundation

  126. of the world

  127. we looked at

  128. a few weeks ago.

  129. We are chosen people.

  130. We are holy people.

  131. God has chosen us

  132. as His

  133. and set us aside,

  134. set us apart,

  135. different from everybody

  136. else in the world

  137. who's not a Christian.

  138. And we are beloved.

  139. We are dearly loved

  140. by God

  141. as His people

  142. united to Christ.

  143. Now most of the passage

  144. that we're looking at now,

  145. verses 11 through 17,

  146. most of this passage

  147. encourages us

  148. to actually live

  149. like God's special people.

  150. We can do that.

  151. You and I,

  152. if we're Christians,

  153. we can live

  154. like God's special people

  155. because when God

  156. saved us,

  157. He put His Spirit

  158. in us.

  159. And we've looked at this

  160. over the years,

  161. we've looked at this

  162. a lot of times.

  163. If you're a Christian,

  164. the Spirit of God

  165. indwells you

  166. and He gives you

  167. the desire

  168. and the ability

  169. to live a life

  170. that pleases God.

  171. And some of the things

  172. we're looking at

  173. in Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  174. helps us to understand

  175. what it takes

  176. to please God

  177. as His children.

  178. We've already seen

  179. that it begins with love.

  180. Look at this real quickly.

  181. Let the love of Christ

  182. fill you.

  183. That was the heading

  184. we gave to what we see

  185. in verses 11 through 14

  186. that we've already covered.

  187. So let me just hit

  188. the highlights here.

  189. Number one,

  190. love will motivate us

  191. to live in unity

  192. with one another.

  193. in spite of our differences

  194. and just look around,

  195. we're very different.

  196. But if we are children of God,

  197. we're brothers and sisters

  198. in Christ

  199. and we can live like Him.

  200. Love will motivate us

  201. to be gracious

  202. with one another.

  203. Look at Colossians 3, 12 there.

  204. What that means.

  205. We'll show compassion.

  206. We'll show kindness.

  207. We'll show patience.

  208. We'll do things like that.

  209. Love will compel us

  210. to treat one another this way.

  211. Love will motivate us

  212. to bear with one another.

  213. Put up with one another.

  214. Some people in here

  215. are hard to deal with,

  216. hard to live with.

  217. Some of us,

  218. more of us than we think

  219. are hard to deal with.

  220. Now, number four,

  221. love will motivate us

  222. to forgive one another

  223. in the same way

  224. that God forgives us.

  225. That's what we looked at

  226. in detail last week.

  227. What I want us to see

  228. at the outset

  229. is loving one another

  230. is the number one way

  231. we live like God's special people.

  232. Jesus said we are to be known

  233. by the love that we have

  234. for one another.

  235. But,

  236. this is not all Paul says

  237. in this passage

  238. when he talks about

  239. living like God's special people.

  240. Let's move on now.

  241. Let the peace of Christ

  242. rule you.

  243. Look at verse 15.

  244. And let the peace of Christ

  245. rule in your hearts

  246. to which indeed

  247. you were called

  248. in one body,

  249. one church,

  250. one family,

  251. and be thankful.

  252. What is the peace of Christ?

  253. Oh, obviously it has

  254. something to do with him.

  255. It's the kind of peace

  256. that he experienced

  257. and gives to us

  258. his people

  259. as noted

  260. in John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  261. Look at this.

  262. Jesus said,

  263. Peace

  264. I leave with you.

  265. My peace

  266. I give to you.

  267. Not as the world gives

  268. do I give to you.

  269. Let not your hearts

  270. be troubled.

  271. Neither let them

  272. be afraid.

  273. Now I want you to understand

  274. this is John 14.

  275. This is the night

  276. that Jesus was arrested.

  277. This is the night

  278. before Jesus

  279. was going to be

  280. crucified

  281. and he knew it

  282. but he told his disciples

  283. let not your hearts

  284. be troubled.

  285. Let them be afraid.

  286. This shows us

  287. that the peace of Christ

  288. is not dependent

  289. on having peaceful circumstances.

  290. It's not dependent

  291. on everybody

  292. loving us

  293. and treating us

  294. well.

  295. The peace of Christ

  296. that he talks about

  297. that he gave

  298. to his disciples

  299. he was about

  300. to about go through

  301. the

  302. the worst

  303. that the devil

  304. could throw at him.

  305. He knew

  306. he was about

  307. to bear

  308. the full wrath

  309. of God

  310. against sin

  311. as he hung

  312. on the cross.

  313. So this peace

  314. is not dependent

  315. on our circumstances.

  316. The peace of Christ

  317. look at this

  318. it is an inward sense

  319. of quiet confidence

  320. that comes from

  321. knowing you are

  322. right with God

  323. through faith

  324. in Jesus.

  325. Look at what Paul

  326. says in Romans 5

  327. 1

  328. therefore

  329. as we have been

  330. justified by faith

  331. as we have been

  332. declared right

  333. with God

  334. by faith.

  335. we have peace

  336. with God

  337. through our Lord

  338. Jesus Christ.

  339. It's the peace

  340. that we have

  341. in our soul.

  342. Peace is hard

  343. to describe.

  344. Paul says

  345. it is beyond

  346. description

  347. in Philippians 4.

  348. It's the peace

  349. that God

  350. gives us

  351. deep within

  352. that we really

  353. are

  354. God's

  355. chosen

  356. person.

  357. His set

  358. apart person.

  359. His dearly

  360. loved person.

  361. No matter

  362. what else

  363. is going on

  364. it's the peace

  365. that God

  366. puts in our

  367. heart

  368. because we

  369. are one

  370. with him.

  371. Now

  372. we can

  373. experience

  374. that kind

  375. of peace

  376. by living

  377. as Paul

  378. calls us

  379. to live

  380. throughout

  381. Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  382. chapter 3.

  383. We can

  384. experience

  385. this kind

  386. of peace

  387. within our

  388. soul

  389. and within

  390. the family

  391. Christian

  392. family

  393. if we

  394. put off

  395. sin

  396. say no

  397. to it

  398. resist

  399. temptation

  400. and put

  401. on as

  402. we've been

  403. seeing

  404. these

  405. Christ-like

  406. character

  407. qualities.

  408. Now

  409. that's not all

  410. he says

  411. he doesn't

  412. just say

  413. the peace

  414. of Christ

  415. he says

  416. he talks

  417. about the

  418. peace

  419. of Christ

  420. ruling

  421. in your

  422. heart

  423. how does

  424. that

  425. happen?

  426. Well the

  427. word rule

  428. here refers

  429. to the

  430. activity

  431. of a

  432. referee

  433. or umpire

  434. in a

  435. game.

  436. The role

  437. of a

  438. referee

  439. or umpire

  440. is to

  441. maintain

  442. control

  443. keep

  444. order

  445. allow the

  446. game to

  447. be played

  448. as it

  449. is intended

  450. to be

  451. played.

  452. The idea

  453. that he's

  454. talking about

  455. here is

  456. let the

  457. peace

  458. of Christ

  459. rule

  460. your life

  461. were to

  462. live in

  463. such a

  464. way

  465. that we

  466. maintain

  467. the peace

  468. of Christ

  469. within

  470. in everything

  471. that we

  472. do.

  473. He's

  474. talking about

  475. how we

  476. go about

  477. making

  478. decisions

  479. and interact

  480. with people

  481. in such

  482. a way

  483. that we

  484. stay close

  485. to the

  486. Lord

  487. that we

  488. experience

  489. his peace

  490. and as far

  491. as we're

  492. concerned

  493. we experience

  494. peace with

  495. other people.

  496. Let's think

  497. about how

  498. this might

  499. work

  500. in some

  501. situations.

  502. Let's

  503. begin with

  504. something

  505. sort of

  506. light

  507. even

  508. fluffy.

  509. Most

  510. churches

  511. in our

  512. area

  513. have both

  514. Carolina

  515. and Clemson

  516. fans.

  517. Both

  518. fans

  519. like to

  520. tease

  521. and insult

  522. the team

  523. that is

  524. not yours.

  525. I love

  526. to insult

  527. you

  528. Gamecock

  529. guys.

  530. And

  531. there's

  532. some of

  533. you

  534. love

  535. to

  536. insult

  537. me.

  538. You

  539. don't

  540. like

  541. winners

  542. you know.

  543. Calm

  544. down

  545. now.

  546. If we

  547. let the

  548. peace

  549. of Christ

  550. rule

  551. in these

  552. kind of

  553. situations

  554. we won't

  555. take our

  556. teasing

  557. too far.

  558. You

  559. have no

  560. idea

  561. how much

  562. restraint

  563. I show.

  564. Especially

  565. throughout

  566. football

  567. season.

  568. And

  569. we

  570. won't

  571. take

  572. offense

  573. when

  574. others

  575. take

  576. their

  577. teasing

  578. us

  579. too

  580. far.

  581. Let me

  582. be serious

  583. for a

  584. moment.

  585. What we're

  586. talking about

  587. is we

  588. will so

  589. value

  590. staying

  591. close

  592. to the

  593. Lord.

  594. Experiencing

  595. his peace.

  596. Demonstrating

  597. Christ-like

  598. character.

  599. That we

  600. will overlook

  601. silly

  602. insults

  603. more than

  604. winning an

  605. argument

  606. about

  607. something

  608. when all

  609. is said

  610. and done

  611. doesn't

  612. really matter.

  613. here.

  614. You see

  615. what I'm

  616. talking

  617. about?

  618. Now,

  619. change the

  620. idea of

  621. the

  622. conflict,

  623. the potential

  624. for conflict

  625. over being a

  626. Carolina or

  627. Clemson fan.

  628. Think about

  629. something serious.

  630. when questions

  631. arise over

  632. something that

  633. the Bible

  634. says clearly

  635. is right

  636. or wrong,

  637. we must,

  638. as God's

  639. people,

  640. take a

  641. stand for

  642. the truth

  643. of God's

  644. Word.

  645. And allowing

  646. the peace of

  647. Christ to

  648. rule in those

  649. situations will

  650. sometimes mean we

  651. have conflict with

  652. somebody who is

  653. opposed to the

  654. truth of God's

  655. Word.

  656. But our

  657. point,

  658. our purpose,

  659. we're more

  660. concerned to

  661. please God,

  662. to stay close

  663. to Him,

  664. to remain in

  665. fellowship with

  666. Him than we

  667. are to please

  668. someone who is

  669. opposed to God's

  670. way, to His

  671. will, to His

  672. Word.

  673. What do you

  674. value most?

  675. Being close

  676. to God or

  677. close to

  678. whoever you're

  679. around at the

  680. time?

  681. Bottom line,

  682. who do you

  683. really and

  684. truly want to

  685. please the

  686. most?

  687. God, by

  688. being faithful

  689. to Him and

  690. His revealed

  691. Word?

  692. Or other

  693. people?

  694. No one should

  695. enjoy conflict.

  696. Seriously.

  697. We should not

  698. seek out

  699. conflict.

  700. We shouldn't

  701. thrive on

  702. conflict.

  703. But as God's

  704. people, when the

  705. truth of God is

  706. at stake, we

  707. must not fear

  708. conflict, and we

  709. must not avoid

  710. conflict.

  711. As long as we're

  712. seeking to please

  713. God, be right

  714. with Him,

  715. experience the

  716. peace of God,

  717. the peace with

  718. God for being

  719. faithful to Him,

  720. we ought to be

  721. able to sleep

  722. well at night,

  723. even if other

  724. people have

  725. something against

  726. us over a

  727. matter of truth.

  728. But let me say

  729. this before we

  730. move on.

  731. We need to be

  732. committed to

  733. speaking the

  734. truth in love.

  735. We need to

  736. defend the

  737. faith in the

  738. right way.

  739. We can't

  740. experience peace

  741. with God in our

  742. heart and be

  743. arrogant, be

  744. rude, be

  745. mean-spirited.

  746. I know some

  747. Christians who

  748. believe right,

  749. but they're

  750. just doggone

  751. mean about it.

  752. That's not what

  753. God calls us to

  754. be, and that's

  755. certainly not going

  756. to help us to

  757. continue on

  758. experiencing the

  759. peace of Christ

  760. within or in the

  761. body of Christ when

  762. we're mean-spirited

  763. about defending the

  764. truth.

  765. When we live like

  766. God's people, we

  767. will make decisions

  768. that will enable us

  769. to preserve the

  770. peace of Christ

  771. within and among

  772. the family.

  773. Let's move on.

  774. Living like God's

  775. people also means

  776. let the word of

  777. Christ dwell in

  778. you.

  779. Verse 16, let the

  780. word of Christ dwell

  781. in you richly,

  782. teaching and

  783. admonishing one

  784. another in all

  785. wisdom, singing

  786. psalms and hymns and

  787. spiritual songs with

  788. thankfulness in your

  789. hearts to God.

  790. Let's look at that.

  791. The word of Christ

  792. refers to the gospel

  793. of Christ or the

  794. teachings of Christ.

  795. Either way, it's

  796. referring to the

  797. authoritative message

  798. about Christ which is

  799. found in scripture.

  800. Now, if we're going to

  801. let the word of Christ

  802. dwell in us richly, we've

  803. got to read it, don't

  804. we?

  805. We've got to know what

  806. the Bible says.

  807. But as important as

  808. that is, reading the

  809. Bible is not enough.

  810. I read things all the

  811. time and just in a

  812. short time, I don't

  813. really remember what it

  814. was.

  815. There's a lot of

  816. mornings I get up and I

  817. look at the weather, see

  818. what it's going to be

  819. that day.

  820. And before Lisa leaves

  821. home, it hadn't been

  822. that long, she'll ask

  823. me, what's the

  824. temperature going to be

  825. today?

  826. Well, I forgot.

  827. I read it, I looked at

  828. it, but I forgot.

  829. We can do that when we

  830. read the Bible.

  831. You know, it is a

  832. commendable goal if you

  833. were reading through

  834. the Bible this year.

  835. It's a commendable goal

  836. to have to read the

  837. Bible every day.

  838. But don't just read it

  839. and check off on your

  840. list that you've read

  841. it.

  842. Just putting content in

  843. your mind is not

  844. enough.

  845. Let the word of Christ

  846. dwell in you richly.

  847. Read it.

  848. Think about it.

  849. Think seriously.

  850. Think deeply about it.

  851. Meditate on it.

  852. Memorize it.

  853. That's what he's

  854. talking about.

  855. And the key to know if

  856. this is happening is

  857. simple.

  858. Do we obey it?

  859. If we're really taking

  860. in the word, dwelling on

  861. the word, letting it

  862. dwell in us richly, we'll

  863. not only believe it, we

  864. will live it.

  865. And notice what else it

  866. says about what we should

  867. be doing with the word.

  868. teaching and admonishing

  869. one another.

  870. Now, for you Carolina

  871. fans, the word admonish

  872. means to warn.

  873. That just sort of got over

  874. your head, I do believe.

  875. Clemson people, they

  876. understand admonish means

  877. to warn.

  878. So I was trying to help

  879. out these game cops.

  880. Now see, that was a test to

  881. see if you're going to let

  882. the peace of Christ dwell

  883. in your heart.

  884. See, I set you up.

  885. Admonish does mean to

  886. warn.

  887. We are to teach and warn

  888. each other based on the

  889. truth of God's word.

  890. You know, most of the

  891. things that we're to do in

  892. the church, it's not from

  893. church leaders to church

  894. members.

  895. Most of what we're called

  896. to do in Scripture is for,

  897. with, to one another like

  898. this.

  899. If you have any doubts,

  900. when you go home today, do

  901. a Google search.

  902. Don't do it here.

  903. And write in there.

  904. Type in there.

  905. The one another's of the

  906. Bible.

  907. And there will be a long

  908. list of things we are called

  909. by God as Christians to do

  910. for, to one another like

  911. this.

  912. How do you advise your

  913. friends, people that come

  914. to you about important,

  915. serious life issues?

  916. We've talked about this

  917. before.

  918. You are probably some people

  919. maybe in your family or

  920. where you work or your

  921. classmates, you are probably

  922. somebody's main Christian

  923. counselor.

  924. You are probably someone in

  925. one of your circles, you're

  926. the go-to person if they have

  927. a real problem and they want

  928. some spiritual, biblical,

  929. Christian guidance.

  930. Well, how do you advise them?

  931. Do you go just by, you know,

  932. your gut feeling?

  933. Do you tell them what you think

  934. they want to hear?

  935. That's not being a friend.

  936. Or do you speak the truth

  937. of God's word?

  938. Years ago, Lisa worked with a

  939. lady.

  940. And she was, she had separated

  941. from her husband contemplating

  942. divorce.

  943. But she knew Lisa was a

  944. Christian and so she talked to

  945. Lisa about it.

  946. Lisa was her counselor.

  947. And they, as friends,

  948. talked.

  949. Lisa said some things about

  950. what the Bible teaches.

  951. This lady really was

  952. interested.

  953. She listened to Lisa.

  954. She actually read the Bible.

  955. She initiated with her husband

  956. Christian counseling.

  957. And in time, they were

  958. reconciled.

  959. God used, Lisa is what I'm

  960. saying.

  961. God will use you

  962. in life-changing ways

  963. in other people's lives

  964. as their counselor,

  965. as their teacher,

  966. as their warner,

  967. admonisher,

  968. if you will be that.

  969. God calls us to teach and warn

  970. one another according to the

  971. wisdom of his word.

  972. Now we also, look in this

  973. passage, we also see that

  974. when we allow the word of

  975. God to dwell in us, it'll

  976. not only produce information

  977. but also emotion

  978. specifically.

  979. It will promote praise,

  980. praise and worship to God

  981. in the forms of music.

  982. Look at this phrase.

  983. Singing psalms and hymns and

  984. spiritual songs with

  985. thanksgiving, thankfulness in

  986. your hearts to God.

  987. Stuart Briscoe comments on

  988. these phrases here like

  989. this.

  990. The fellowship of believers

  991. is a praising community

  992. where people who can sing

  993. beautifully, sing beautifully.

  994. And those who just sing,

  995. just sing.

  996. And those who have voices

  997. like crows with laryngitis

  998. croak to the glory of God.

  999. But nobody just sits there

  1000. like an old sourpuss

1001. looking as if they had lost

1002. their last friend having had

  1003. their breakfast of onions.

1004. Listen to what he says.

1005. Singing, it really is an

  1006. important part of Christian

  1007. worship.

1008. And I'm saying that as

  1009. someone who really can't

  1010. sing.

1011. It is important that we do,

1012. that we worship and praise the

  1013. Lord.

1014. But it is important that we

1015. worship and praise the Lord

1016. in a biblically sound way.

1017. According, as the word of God

  1018. richly dwells in us.

1019. I want you to know Paul uses

  1020. three different words here.

  1021. Psalms, hymns, and spiritual

  1022. songs.

  1023. There's a lot of debate among

1024. New Testament scholars as to

  1025. what the differences are.

1026. Are they major or minor?

1027. Let me just say this.

  1028. There are some differences.

  1029. Psalms, hymns, and spiritual

  1030. songs.

1031. That means we should use

1032. different kinds of music in

  1033. our worship.

  1034. And we do.

  1035. Good example this morning.

1036. We sang, this is amazing

  1037. grace.

  1038. A more contemporary type

  1039. song.

1040. We sang an old hymn, amazing

  1041. grace.

1042. And I want you to know, God

1043. enjoyed both if they were sung

1044. as an act of worship and praise

  1045. to him.

1046. He didn't like one better than

  1047. the other.

1048. You may have liked one better

  1049. than another.

  1050. And that's fine.

1051. I liked one better than

  1052. another.

  1053. But you know something?

1054. I'm not going to talk about

1055. which one I liked the best,

  1056. which one I didn't like as

  1057. well.

1058. It's really not about me.

1059. And I got news for you.

1060. When we come here to worship

1061. on Sunday morning, it ain't

  1062. about you.

1063. Never is it about you.

1064. When we come here for worship,

1065. it is about worshiping and

  1066. praising and honoring and

1067. glorifying God and the Lord

  1068. Jesus Christ.

1069. And we're going to do it in as

1070. many different ways as we

  1071. possibly can because it's

1072. biblically, as long as it's

1073. biblically sound and it is

1074. because that's what God wants us

  1075. to do.

1076. We're different and we have

1077. different ways of expressing our

  1078. worship and praise.

1079. But you know, I can really

1080. praise God in different kinds

1081. of ways, even ways that's not

  1082. my favorite.

1083. And if it's about praising God,

1084. you can do the same.

1085. You will do the same.

1086. You know, I've been pastor here

  1087. a long time.

  1088. And I don't think there's anyone

1089. in this room other than maybe

  1090. Brian.

1091. I've never said much to him in

  1092. all these years.

1093. There's very few people in this

1094. room who knows what my favorite

1095. form of music and worship is.

1096. And I don't care what yours is.

1097. Because we try to do a little

1098. bit of all that is biblically

1099. sound and God focused, God

  1100. honoring, praising and worshiping

  1101. him, talking about him.

1102. That's what worship really is.

1103. And that's what Paul tells us to

  1104. do.

1105. It's got to be biblically sound,

1106. but it needs to be done in a

  1107. variety of ways.

  1108. Emotion is important.

1109. Let's look at one more way we're

1110. to live like God's people.

1111. Verse 17, let the name of Christ

  1112. guide you.

1113. And whatever you do, in word or

1114. deed, do everything in the name

1115. of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks

1116. to God the Father through him.

1117. Paul is describing, obviously, every

1118. aspect of our lives when he says,

1119. and whatever you do, in word or

  1120. deed.

1121. Whatever you do, what you say, what

1122. you do, everything we should do

1123. should be done in the name of Jesus.

1124. Now, what is he talking about?

1125. We're to think of ourselves as always

  1126. being the Lord's representative.

1127. I think that's the best way to think

1128. of it here in this context.

1129. Or as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5,

  1130. we are his ambassadors.

1131. Now, this is a real sobering thought.

  1132. Let it sink in.

1133. As Christians, what he's telling us

1134. here, we are to represent Christ in

1135. everything we say and do in our lives.

1136. Let the name of Christ guide us.

1137. That means at home, at work, at

1138. school, wherever we are, with our

  1139. friends, with our enemies.

  1140. Think about it.

1141. What kind of representative are you

  1142. on a typical day?

1143. On some days, we're all poor, poor.

  1144. We're all poor, poor.

1145. But on a typical day, do you represent

1146. Christ in a way that is honoring of him?

1147. Or do you represent him, misrepresent

  1148. him?

1149. Think about it another way.

1150. The way you represent Christ, are you

  1151. attracting people to him?

1152. Or are you turning people away from him

  1153. on our typical day?

1154. You know, the Bible does not provide a

1155. verse or even a passage that applies to

1156. every kind of problem we encounter in

  1157. life.

1158. But this verse provides one of the best

1159. guidelines for helping us to make wise

1160. decisions about the things the Bible is

  1161. not specific about.

1162. For example, whenever you face a situation

1163. and you don't really know how to respond, the

1164. Bible doesn't really address your question.

1165. Well, think to yourself, as a representative of

1166. Jesus Christ, what would be my best response?

1167. How should I respond to most honorably represent the Lord in

1168. this conversation, in this action?

1169. This is one of the ways that God guides us to make wise

1170. decisions when there's no passage that actually addresses the

  1171. issue.

1172. Well, let's think about this now.

1173. How well are you living like a child of God?

1174. How well are you living like one of God's special people?

  1175. Think.

  1176. Look at yourself.

1177. Ask God to help you to see.

1178. Is the love of Christ filling you?

1179. Is the peace of Christ ruling you?

1180. Is the word of Christ dwelling in you?

1181. Is the name of Christ guiding you?

1182. None of this can be true if you don't know Christ as your Lord

  1183. and Savior.

1184. I want you to understand.

1185. If you don't know Christ as your Lord and Savior, the only

1186. thing you can do right now is to admit that to the Lord,

1187. humble yourself before Him, turn from your sin, repent,

1188. change your mind, and put your faith in Jesus.

1189. Call upon Him to save you.

1190. But you know, none of this can be true until you do what we've

1191. been looking at throughout this chapter.

  1192. Put off sin.

  1193. Say no to temptation.

  1194. Put on Christ-like character.

1195. And remember, it's only by the power of the indwelling Spirit that

1196. we can do that, but we can do that with His help.

1197. But if that's not how you're living right now, if this is not a good

1198. description, what you see on the screen, go to God right now and just

  1199. confess your sin specifically.

  1200. Turn from it.

1201. Come back to the Lord and renew your faith, your commitment to Him as the real king of your life.

1202. And keep in mind that repentance and faith is not just a one-time commitment.

1203. As Christians, our lives are just a process of being convicted of our sin, turning from it,

1204. turning to Christ in renewed faith and commitment and love and service.

1205. The Christian life is a life of saying no to sin and temptation.

1206. And saying yes to the Holy Spirit's prompting us and helping us to truly develop Christ-like character.

  1207. There's one final thought.

1208. In each of these verses we've looked at this morning, Paul tells us to be thankful.

1209. Every one of those verses, 15, 16, and 17, he says in some way, be thankful.

1210. We need to leave here this morning thankful for the grace that God has shown us,

1211. for the work that He is doing in us every day.

1212. Thankfulness is a sure sign of people who know they belong to God.

1213. If you know you are chosen by Him, that He has truly set you apart as His child,

1214. if you truly know that you are a dearly loved child of God,

1215. you will be thankful and you will express it to Him in word and in deed.

  1216. Let's pray together.

1217. Father, help us to see right now how we should respond.

  1218. Convict us.

  1219. Encourage us.

  1220. Affirm us.

  1221. Whatever we need.

1222. Call people in this room who are not Christians to real faith in Jesus.

1223. Call Christians who are being unfaithful right now.

  1224. Back to you.

1225. Encourage Christians, Father, who are seeking to be sensitive to your spirit and obedient and faithful to your word.

1226. Encourage those who are struggling.

1227. Use those who are truly seeking to walk faithfully with you to help others and be an example and a counselor to others.

1228. Father, show us all how we should respond and help us to do it right now.

1229. Let's just all do that in attitude of prayer.

1230. If I could pray with you during this time, I'd be happy to do that.

1231. But as always, the important thing is that you listen to God and obey Him in these next few minutes.
