  1. Well, Fred Stone called me about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon and said,

  2. Can you preach for me tomorrow?

  3. But before he said a word, he's something like this,

  4. Can you preach for me tomorrow?

  5. And my response was, Fred, you sound awful.

  6. And running a fever, thought he had the flu, not feeling good,

  7. so we need to pray for him, and as has already been mentioned,

  8. we need to pray for Lisa.

  9. Fred and I are alike in a lot of ways, and Lisa and Ann have compared notes,

  10. and we're not very good patients, I know, so pray for Lisa.

  11. Pray for Fred that he'll get better as well.

  12. A few weeks ago, when he was going through Colossians,

  13. as he was going through Colossians 3, Fred preached about forgiveness.

  14. And so I want to speak about forgiveness today,

  15. not in any way to try to compete with what he's already said,

  16. because I agree with everything he said.

  17. It was a good sermon.

  18. What I want to do is just take one facet of forgiveness and share it with you.

  19. So if you have your Bibles, if you'll turn to Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 32.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  20. One verse.

  21. While you're turning, Colossians chapter 3 and verses 12 and 13 says,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  22. So as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved,

  23. put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,

  24. bearing with one another and forgiving each other.

  25. Whoever has a complaint against anyone,

  26. just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.

  27. Then in Ephesians 4 and verse 32.

  28. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other,

  29. just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

  30. Forgiveness is good for our souls.

  31. Forgiveness is healthy.

  32. Forgiveness is Christian.

  33. Forgiveness is right.

  34. Forgiveness is a gift from God that transforms us or should

  35. to the point that we become like our Savior

  36. in that we forgive when we've been wronged.

  37. Now that's hard to do.

  38. It's tough to do.

  39. I remember many years ago now

  40. when I was a pastor at Roebuck Baptist in Spartanburg,

  41. I preached a sermon about forgiveness.

  42. And I was younger then

  43. and knew more then, of course, than I know now.

  44. But I really preached it.

  45. And I preached it hard.

  46. And the next morning on Monday,

  47. I go into a barber shop

  48. that a woman had disguised as a beauty parlor.

  49. But her ministry to me was,

  50. I'll cut your hair for free.

  51. Now, please, it was many years ago

  52. when I had some hair.

  53. So I go in there and I'm sitting in the chair.

  54. She's cutting my hair.

  55. And the guy comes in and he was at church Sunday.

  56. He said, preacher, I heard that sermon about forgiveness.

  57. I said, yeah.

  58. He said, man, I don't know.

  59. He said, that's hard.

  60. I said, yeah.

  61. He said, that forgiveness, he said, I don't know.

  62. He said, there's some people

  63. that's done things so wrong and so bad to me.

  64. I don't think I can ever forgive them.

  65. And so I said, yeah, you can.

  66. Not knowing any better, I said, sure you can.

  67. Looking back on it, I think it was the right thing to do

  68. because you can because Jesus Christ

  69. will never ask us to do anything

  70. that he will not empower us to do.

  71. So if forgiveness is God's will and it is,

  72. you and I should be people of forgiveness.

  73. We should be discerning.

  74. We should be intelligent.

  75. We should be wise.

  76. But we should be people of forgiveness.

  77. And forgiveness is not about how we feel.

  78. It's about what we do.

  79. It's not feeling something

  80. as much as it is being committed to something.

  81. So when we forgive somebody, we cancel the debt.

  82. We don't hold it against them.

  83. It's not something that we carry any longer

  84. in our hearts, the hurt.

  85. Dr. David Benner, who was a clinical Christian psychologist,

  86. said this,

  87. the single most important concept in biblical Christianity,

  88. wow, the single most important concept

  89. in biblical Christianity is forgiveness.

  90. It is a freeing, empowering, refreshing, healing,

  91. and joyful experience, which is capable

  92. of transforming all of life.

  93. To forgive is to show love.

  94. To forgive is to actually receive love.

  95. The Bible says we're to love one another,

  96. to love our mates, to love our enemies.

  97. And it's not so much that we're going to have

  98. these effervescent feelings,

  99. but that we are going to be committed

  100. to do what is the right thing.

  101. On Monday, December the 1st, 1997,

  102. in Paducah, Kentucky,

  103. and the reason I go back that far and remember that

  104. is because when I was working on my second master's degree,

  105. then there was a guy in the class

  106. who was from Paducah, Kentucky,

  107. and I had never heard of the place before,

  108. but then sometime later, this happened,

  109. and I was remembering that,

  110. and I recall my friendship with him.

  111. About a dozen students, you remember,

  112. gathered to pray before school had started.

  113. It was outside the administration building

  114. at Heath High School.

  115. Classes were getting ready to start,

  116. and the prayer meeting was about to end

  117. when shots rang out,

  118. and a 22-year-old freshman

  119. with an automatic .22 pistol came in,

  120. and he began firing into the prayer meeting.

  121. He killed three.

  122. He seriously wounded five.

  123. One of the girls that was wounded,

  124. her name was Melissa Jenkins.

  125. She was 15 years old,

  126. and she had been shot.

  127. She was taken to a nearby hospital,

  128. and they did surgery on her,

  129. but the results were

  130. that she would be a paraplegic

  131. for the rest of her life.

  132. So as the days went by,

  133. and she was able to talk,

  134. she said to people who had visited her,

  135. tell the shooter,

  136. I forgive him.

  137. Now that rocked the media.

  138. They didn't know how to handle that

  139. because the secular media

  140. does not know how to handle spiritual stuff.

  141. They were shocked by that.

  142. They couldn't believe it.

  143. Forgiveness is hard.

  144. Forgiveness is not natural.

  145. Forgiveness is supernatural

  146. because forgiveness is the work of God

  147. to us and through us

  148. and in the lives of other people.

  149. Just a few years ago,

  150. you remember the Emanuel Nine

  151. at Mother Emanuel AME Church

  152. when Dylan Roof, a white supremacist,

  153. comes in to a small prayer meeting

  154. on a Wednesday night

  155. and pulls out a weapon

  156. and kills, murders nine people.

  157. And once again,

  158. the media was absolutely stunned

  159. when that church rallied around

  160. and then you had families of the victims

  161. saying, we forgive him.

  162. That's not natural.

  163. The world doesn't expect that.

  164. The media doesn't expect that.

  165. Some Christians don't even expect that.

  166. But that's what God expects from us.

  167. To forgive.

  168. But I would remind you that

  169. over 2,000 years

  170. before the Emanuel Nine

  171. or before Melissa Jenkins

  172. or before all these other terrible shootings,

  173. Jesus Christ dying on the cross,

  174. dehydrated in great pain,

  175. bearing the sin of the world.

  176. And just before he died,

  177. do you remember what Jesus said?

  178. Father, forgive them.

  179. For they don't know what they're doing.

  180. And we have a tendency to separate

  181. who Jesus was and who we are

  182. and we shouldn't

  183. because the Bible says

  184. he is in us

  185. in the person of his spirit.

  186. And if he is in us,

  187. then we should be growing more and more

  188. to be like him.

  189. And Jesus Christ was about forgiveness.

  190. Forgiveness is mentioned 260 times in the Bible.

  191. A few years ago,

  192. I went out to Dallas, Texas.

  193. And I have had a license as a counselor

  194. for a number of years.

  195. But some of you know this.

  196. If you're in any kind of profession

  197. that you have to have a license

  198. or certification,

  199. then you have to go through continuing education.

  200. You have to get these CEUs.

  201. So they're having this

  202. Christian counseling conference

  203. and had these national speakers.

  204. And then you know how those things go.

  205. You have a plenary speaker

  206. and then you have tracks.

  207. And you have all these different courses

  208. or tracks you can get on.

  209. And I noticed that Dr. Richard Walters,

  210. his track was forgiveness.

  211. So I decided to take his lectures during the week

  212. and I bought his book,

  213. which was about forgiveness.

  214. And I'll never forget

  215. when he stood up the first day of his seminar,

  216. he said this.

  217. He's in Boulder, Colorado.

  218. Christian psychologist.

  219. Private practice.

  220. He said,

  221. over 90% of all the people I see in my practice

  222. have an issue.

  223. And the issue is forgiveness.

  224. They either need to receive it

  225. or they need to give it.

  226. No wonder then Benner would say

  227. it's the single most important concept

  228. in biblical Christianity.

  229. Forgiveness.

  230. Dr. Walter said,

  231. when we don't forgive,

  232. there's three things that happen.

  233. There's broken relationships.

  234. And a person has a tendency

  235. to become kind of paranoid,

  236. cynical, suspicious of almost everyone.

  237. And then the second thing

  238. is broken fellowship with God.

  239. And he says,

  240. you cannot have joy.

  241. You can't be a witness.

  242. You cannot really walk with God

  243. if you don't receive forgiveness,

  244. if you don't give forgiveness.

  245. And then the third thing

  246. is broken health.

  247. And he says,

  248. unforgiving people have a tendency

  249. to have more physical difficulties

  250. than others.

  251. Well,

  252. that was the introduction.

  253. So I want to share two things

  254. with you this morning.

  255. And you know it's going to be short,

  256. right Brian?

  257. Because it's only two things.

  258. The first is the foundation.

  259. He says,

  260. forgiving each other

  261. just as God in Christ

  262. has also forgiven you.

  263. The foundation.

  264. So why do we even need that verse

  265. in the Bible?

  266. He says,

  267. forgiving each other.

  268. And he's talking about Christians,

  269. people that are born again,

  270. forgiving each other.

  271. Then the reason it's there

  272. and the reason it's for Christians

  273. is because we need it,

  274. because we fail,

  275. because we sin,

  276. and because we hurt others,

  277. and we are hurt by others.

  278. It's a real temptation to say,

  279. if you are perfect,

  280. would you stand up and testify

  281. about what life is like,

  282. like that?

  283. But I won't do it

  284. because you never know

  285. in a service

  286. when some deranged person

  287. may come in

  288. thinking they're actually perfect.

  289. We're not.

  290. We sin.

  291. We fail.

  292. We stumble.

  293. But we're to be forgiving.

  294. And we're to receive forgiveness.

  295. So the problem we have is

  296. the problem of sin.

  297. And guess what?

  298. Sin doesn't go away.

  299. It's always been in the world.

  300. It always will be in the world.

  301. And the root of sin is pride.

  302. And pride is the reason

  303. we don't forgive.

  304. We don't think we need to forgive.

  305. We think we're too good to forgive.

  306. We're too hurt to forgive.

  307. We know too much to forgive.

  308. Pride gets even.

  309. Pride destroys.

  310. Proverbs 16 and verse 18 says,

  311. Pride goes before destruction

  312. and a haughty spirit before stumbling.

  313. And Hebrews 12 and verse 1 says,

  314. Laying aside every encumbrance

  315. and the sin.

  316. Note the article.

  317. The sin which so easily entangles us.

  318. A lot of Christians have been bothered by that.

  319. They think it's this sin or this sin,

  320. this thing I do or this thing I do.

  321. But what the writer is talking about is

  322. the sin is unbelief.

  323. Theologically it's unbelief.

  324. You flip it over and the other side of the coin

  325. is psychologically.

  326. It's pride.

  327. And they're one and the same.

  328. The sin that so easily entangles us

  329. from pride, from unbelief,

  330. comes this unwillingness to forgive.

  331. And if we're unwilling to forgive

  332. when we know we need to forgive,

  333. then what happens inside of us

  334. is a sort of bitterness

  335. and stillness spiritually

  336. begins to set up.

  337. John MacArthur said,

  338. Refusing to forgive

  339. is a horrible sin.

  340. Now forgiveness and reconciliation

  341. are not the same thing.

  342. You can forgive somebody

  343. and you may never be able

  344. to be reconciled with that person,

  345. but you can never be reconciled

  346. with someone

  347. if you're not forgiving

  348. of that person.

  349. The problem is sin.

  350. But the power

  351. is Jesus Christ.

  352. There's never been a shortage

  353. of power

  354. with Christ.

  355. I'm in the process

  356. of writing a book

  357. about angels

  358. and it's fascinating

  359. about angels.

  360. And I had one to appear

  361. in my life

  362. although I've never seen

  363. an angel.

  364. But Christ is so much

  365. more powerful

  366. than angels

  367. and all the angels exist

  368. to serve and honor

  369. and glorify Jesus Christ.

  370. The power is in Christ.

  371. When His Spirit is in us,

  372. it's His power

  373. that works in us.

  374. Forgiven people

  375. know how to forgive.

  376. Forgiven people

  377. should be forgiving people.

  378. Oh, but there's, you know,

  379. that bothering story

  380. in Matthew 18.

  381. 23 through 27.

  382. The man had a debt

  383. of 10,000 talents.

  384. Huge debt.

  385. The largest talent

  386. was the largest

  387. denomination of money

  388. in the Roman Empire

  389. in circulation.

  390. One talent was equal

  391. to 6,000 denarii

  392. and a denarius

  393. was a day's wage

  394. for an everyday laborer

  395. or a soldier.

  396. 6,000 denarii

  397. would equal

  398. about 17 years

  399. of wages

  400. and a debt

  401. of 10,000 talents

  402. would take 10,000 men

  403. about 17 years

  404. to pay off.

  405. It would take

  406. at least 100 men

  407. a lifetime

  408. to pay it off.

  409. The debt

  410. was insurmountable.

  411. It was impossible

  412. to pay off.

  413. It was something like

  414. 12 to 14 million dollars.

  415. And that's the debt

  416. this man has accumulated.

  417. The Bible doesn't say

  418. how he accumulated it,

  419. but he accumulated it

  420. and he couldn't pay it.

  421. So he goes to

  422. the people he's indebted to

  423. and he asks for mercy

  424. and then they say,

  425. your debt's been forgiven.

  426. It's canceled.

  427. You don't owe anything.

  428. And then he leaves

  429. that relieved,

  430. wouldn't you?

  431. He's rejoicing

  432. and he runs into

  433. his friend on the street

  434. who owes him $20.

  435. And he says,

  436. give me my money.

  437. I don't have,

  438. if you don't give me

  439. my money,

  440. I'm going to have you

  441. thrown in jail.

  442. And he had him

  443. thrown in jail.

  444. And then Jesus

  445. makes the point

  446. that this man

  447. did not know forgiveness

  448. because if he knew

  449. forgiveness

  450. of this insurmountable death

  451. like we had with sin

  452. and was not willing

  453. to forgive a man

  454. $20,

  455. he did not know

  456. the power

  457. or the principle

  458. or the reality

  459. of forgiveness.

  460. Ephesians 1, 7 says,

  461. we have redemption

  462. through his blood,

  463. the forgiveness

  464. of our trespasses

  465. according to the riches

  466. of his grace.

  467. God never overlooks sin

  468. for God's sin is serious

  469. and sin ought to be

  470. serious for us.

  471. And God paid the price

  472. for sin.

  473. When the price for sin

  474. is paid,

  475. our condition,

  476. our condition

  477. has been changed.

  478. God looks at us

  479. not as sinners then

  480. but he looks at us

  481. as redeemed

  482. but we commit sins.

  483. And that's where we go

  484. to a verse like

  485. 1 John 1, 9.

  486. If conditional.

  487. If we confess

  488. our sins.

  489. He's faithful

  490. and righteous

  491. to forgive us our sins

  492. and cleanse us

  493. of all unrighteousness.

  494. It is a condition

  495. based on the confessing

  496. and the confess.

  497. Mike,

  498. I know you're

  499. a Greek scholar.

  500. The confess

  501. is a compound word

  502. in Greek.

  503. Homo,

  504. legio.

  505. Homo meaning same.

  506. Legio meaning word.

  507. Speak the same word.

  508. Say the same thing.

  509. In other words,

  510. agree with God.

  511. When we confess

  512. our sin to God,

  513. we are agreeing

  514. with God

  515. that what we've done

  516. is wrong.

  517. Instead of playing games,

  518. instead of hiding,

  519. instead of not owning up

  520. to it,

  521. we confess it

  522. with God.

  523. Pain,

  524. hurt,

  525. that lingers

  526. in our heart

  527. will fester

  528. spiritually.

  529. and if we don't

  530. confess that,

  531. it will lead

  532. to this heart,

  533. this spirit,

  534. this practice

  535. of unforgiveness.

  536. The last thing,

  537. the second thing

  538. is the explanation.

  539. He says,

  540. forgiving each

  541. other.

  542. Now,

  543. what do we do

  544. when we forgive somebody?

  545. Well,

  546. somebody,

  547. say somebody comes

  548. to us

  549. and they say,

  550. you know what,

  551. I did this,

  552. will you forgive me?

  553. We say,

  554. yeah,

  555. I forgive you.

  556. Now,

  557. one thing with the problem

  558. with that

  559. is that most of us

  560. in this country,

  561. Christians,

  562. when somebody says,

  563. will you forgive me

  564. and we don't want

  565. to talk about it,

  566. we don't have to deal

  567. with the hurt,

  568. we say,

  569. oh yeah,

  570. yeah,

  571. I forgive you

  572. because we don't

  573. think about it.

  574. We haven't forgiven them,

  575. we just say,

  576. I don't want to talk about it.

  577. Forgiveness is a process.

  578. Forgiveness takes time.

  579. It doesn't just,

  580. to forgive someone,

  581. you have to feel

  582. what has happened

  583. and you have to release

  584. any claim on that.

  585. You have to be willing

  586. to cancel the debt

  587. even though somebody

  588. has done you wrong.

  589. Remember the model prayer

  590. in Matthew 6

  591. and verse 12.

  592. Jesus said,

  593. forgive us our debts

  594. as we also have forgiven

  595. our debtors

  596. or our trespasses

  597. as we forgive those

  598. who trespass against us.

  599. Our condition

  600. has changed

  601. but our practice

  602. as sinners

  603. continues.

  604. when we forgive

  605. we release

  606. and we don't take it back.

  607. Now you can forgive someone

  608. and never be able

  609. to walk in fellowship

  610. with that person again

  611. depending on the person's life

  612. not yours.

  613. Let me give you an example.

  614. I'm like Fred,

  615. I'm a dog man,

  616. I don't particularly like cats.

  617. So,

  618. if I'm walking down the street

  619. and there's this

  620. fenced in front yard

  621. and I go by the sidewalk

  622. and there's a little dog

  623. on the inside

  624. and he's jumping up

  625. and down,

  626. he's wagging his tail

  627. which is a sign to say

  628. I love you,

  629. I love you,

  630. I love you.

  631. And I open the gate

  632. and I go and I say,

  633. hey little buddy,

  634. how you doing?

  635. He goes,

  636. he writes my finger off.

  637. And I'm bleeding profusely

  638. and so I wrap it up

  639. and I run down

  640. to the doctor

  641. and he stitches it up

  642. and he says,

  643. look,

  644. we can't save your finger,

  645. you're gonna be without a finger.

  646. And I recover

  647. and get back on my daily walk

  648. and I go by that same house

  649. and that same dog

  650. and the dog's barking

  651. and wagging his tail again

  652. and I said,

  653. I'm not messing with you.

  654. Now I've forgiven the dog,

  655. I didn't kill the dog.

  656. I've forgiven the dog

  657. but I'm not gonna get in there

  658. with the dog,

  659. have fellowship with it

  660. because the nature of the dog

  661. has not changed.

  662. There's some people

  663. you'll meet in life

  664. because of the way,

  665. the trajectory they're on,

  666. where they live,

  667. what their life is like,

  668. they may do something

  669. to hurt you

  670. and you may forgive them

  671. but you may not be able

  672. to be reconciled with them

  673. or to have fellowship with them.

  674. But when you forgive,

  675. a commitment is made

  676. and that commitment

  677. is maintained.

  678. How can we tell

  679. if we need

  680. to forgive somebody?

  681. Have you ever wondered that?

  682. Dr. Walters in his book

  683. and I've used this for years

  684. in counseling with people

  685. would give them a list of things

  686. and this was on the list.

  687. But he said,

  688. there's six things

  689. that you can ask

  690. and he used this

  691. as a checklist

  692. in his practice

  693. in counseling with people.

  694. Six things

  695. to see if you need

  696. to forgive someone.

  697. Let me give them to you

  698. real quickly.

  699. Number one is,

  700. do I often think

  701. about the hurt?

  702. Do I often think

  703. about the hurt

  704. and have strong feelings

  705. of anger?

  706. Now there's a difference

  707. in being hurt

  708. and being unforgiving.

  709. If you're hurt,

  710. you can be forgiving.

  711. You can be hurt

  712. and be unforgiving

  713. but there's a difference

  714. in the two.

  715. Second,

  716. do I imagine

  717. or desire injury

  718. or hurt

  719. coming to the person

  720. who hurt me?

  721. Revenge is the opposite

  722. of forgiveness.

  723. Many years ago

  724. when I was pastor

  725. at Roebuck Baptist

  726. in Spartanburg

  727. doing counseling,

  728. there was a couple

  729. that joined our church.

  730. It was a blended family.

  731. They both had lost

  732. their mates

  733. and so they come together

  734. as this blended family

  735. and blended,

  736. they had eight children.

  737. So it was a struggle

  738. from the very beginning

  739. and they just kind of

  740. got married

  741. before anybody knew it.

  742. Bam!

  743. And there they were.

  744. And so they came to me

  745. for counseling.

  746. I counseled with them

  747. for a few weeks

  748. and then one day

  749. she comes in alone

  750. and she is absolutely hysterical.

  751. What happened?

  752. He's gone.

  753. What do you mean he's gone?

  754. While I was at work,

  755. he had a U-Haul come,

  756. loaded up all his furniture,

  757. took his kids

  758. and they've gone to Florida.

  759. I said,

  760. oh my.

  761. And she was,

  762. I mean,

  763. she was hot.

  764. She was livid.

  765. And so we began to talk

  766. and I'm thinking,

  767. well,

  768. how can we work through this now?

  769. I didn't want to say,

  770. well,

  771. how do you feel about him?

  772. Because I had an idea

  773. how she felt about him.

  774. As we began to talk,

  775. forgiveness was a little early

  776. in the conversation.

  777. I was just trying to get her

  778. to a place

  779. that she didn't want to kill him.

  780. And I said,

  781. well,

  782. after a couple of times,

  783. I said,

  784. well,

  785. how are you feeling

  786. about things now?

  787. She said,

  788. well,

  789. you know what?

  790. I don't want him to die.

  791. And I thought,

  792. well,

  793. that's a success.

  794. She said,

  795. I just want him

  796. to have an accident

  797. or get a disease

  798. and just linger

  799. for a long time in pain.

  800. That's not forgiveness.

  801. That's not forgiveness.

  802. Do I imagine hurt

  803. or injury

  804. coming to this person?

  805. The third thing,

  806. do I go out of my way

  807. to avoid the person?

  808. They have hurt me.

  809. Do I go out of my way

  810. to avoid them?

  811. The fourth thing is,

  812. do I have physical symptoms

  813. like irritability

  814. when we think of that person

  815. or that wrong?

  816. Does it change

  817. the way I behave?

  818. Number five,

  819. do I directly

  820. or indirectly

  821. attack

  822. the other person?

  823. Am I very aggressive

  824. aggressive

  825. or am I passive aggressive?

  826. And then number six,

  827. am I critical

  828. of myself,

  829. self-demanding

  830. and self-condemning?

  831. In other words,

  832. if I am angry

  833. and I'm not going

  834. to express it

  835. to this person

  836. because I'm going

  837. to avoid them

  838. and I'm not

  839. confessing it

  840. to God,

  841. then that means

  842. I'm suppressing it

  843. and if I'm suppressing

  844. that anger

  845. that comes

  846. from that hurt,

  847. that means

  848. I'm probably

  849. depressed

  850. and my countenance,

  851. my inside,

  852. my soul

  853. changes.

  854. Anybody,

  855. you need to forgive.

  856. The best time

  857. to forgive somebody

  858. is when you can.

  859. I want to close

  860. with this story

  861. that happened

  862. in my life.

  863. I grew up

  864. in the little town

  865. of Iva,

  866. South Carolina.

  867. Has anybody

  868. ever heard of it?

  869. Okay.

  870. I don't know

  871. if you'd want

  872. to go there today

  873. but there was

  874. a lady that grew

  875. that was in my church

  876. and she was

  877. kind of the,

  878. she was

  879. Miss Missions

  880. to everybody

  881. in the whole area,

  882. every church.

  883. Her name

  884. was Reva Wansley.

  885. She was a school teacher.

  886. She had been

  887. a widow

  888. for as long

  889. as I knew her

  890. as a little boy

  891. growing up.

  892. She had two jobs.

  893. She'd be a substitute

  894. teacher

  895. and then she would

  896. also work

  897. for the Anderson

  898. Independent

  899. and she covered

  900. Northeast Georgia

  901. and she had

  902. a column in there

  903. called

  904. Roving with Reva

  905. and she'd tell

  906. about all

  907. these little things

  908. that were happening

  909. and dinners

  910. and all this stuff

  911. and coming

  912. and going

  913. and vacation

  914. and get togethers

  915. and stuff

  916. in Northeast Georgia

  917. but she was

  918. a member

  919. of the church

  920. I grew up in

  921. and she smelled

  922. good.

  923. I mean

  924. she smelled

  925. real good.

  926. I mean

  927. she smelled

  928. strong

  929. and you knew

  930. Miss Reva

  931. was coming

  932. before she got there

  933. and she wore

  934. makeup

  935. and she had

  936. beautiful,

  937. beautiful gray hair

  938. but she put

  939. her makeup

  940. on

  941. and she always

  942. had these red

  943. circles

  944. that she put

  945. on her cheeks

  946. and she was

  947. something else

  948. but boy

  949. was she mighty,

  950. mighty

  951. in prayer

  952. and missions.

  953. She loved

  954. missions so much

  955. she wanted

  956. to help

  957. missionaries

  958. so much

  959. that instead

  960. of spending

  961. money

  962. and getting

  963. new shoes

  964. she would

  965. cut out

  966. of cardboard

  967. the size

  968. of her shoe

  969. and put it

  970. in her shoe

  971. so she could

  972. wear it longer

  973. so she could

  974. give more

  975. to missions.

  976. You talk

  977. about Lottie Moon

  978. Christmas offering

  979. this is a woman

  980. that inspired

  981. many,

  982. many people

  983. to give.

  984. Well I came

  985. along and

  986. after she had

  987. retired from

  988. just about

  989. everything

  990. I was working

  991. at the Anderson

  992. Independent

  993. for a couple

  994. of years

  995. I went to

  996. University of

  997. South Carolina

  998. I continued

  999. to be a writer

  1000. for them

  1001. in the sports

  1002. department

  1003. and then I

  1004. announced

  1005. that I was

  1006. God had called

  1007. me into ministry

  1008. and I was

  1009. shifting gears

  1010. and I was

  1011. going to study

  1012. for the ministry

  1013. then.

  1014. Well I got

  1015. a letter

  1016. from her

  1017. it means a lot

  1018. to me

  1019. so I'm going

  1020. to share

  1021. it with you

  1022. I hope it

  1023. means something

  1024. to you

  1025. she said

  1026. my dear

  1027. Rudy

  1028. congratulations

  1029. I'm so proud

  1030. of you

  1031. I'm expecting

  1032. great things

  1033. of you

  1034. and I'm sure

  1035. I won't be

  1036. disappointed

  1037. you're doing

  1038. well as a

  1039. sports writer

  1040. I read

  1041. and enjoy

  1042. all you write

  1043. and she gave

  1044. me a list

  1045. of several

  1046. verses

  1047. and then said

  1048. these along

  1049. with others

  1050. have meant

  1051. so much

  1052. to me

  1053. in my life

  1054. and work

  1055. they are so

  1056. very comforting

  1057. when the going

  1058. gets tough

  1059. don't let

  1060. anything

  1061. discourage you

  1062. in life

  1063. discouragements

  1064. will come

  1065. but don't let

  1066. them get you

  1067. down

  1068. I'm so proud

  1069. of the interest

  1070. you are taking

  1071. in the Lord's

  1072. work

  1073. keep it up

  1074. may God

  1075. bless you

  1076. and use you

  1077. in a marvelous

  1078. way

  1079. now and always

  1080. I love you

  1081. dearly

  1082. and she signed

  1083. it

  1084. Mrs. Wansley

  1085. in 1978

  1086. there was a

  1087. fire in her

  1088. house

  1089. she was 81

  1090. at the time

  1091. she had a

  1092. retarded son

  1093. who was 57

  1094. and somehow

  1095. he had turned

  1096. a kerosene

  1097. heater over

  1098. it had spilled

  1099. out and the

  1100. house had caught

  1101. fire and she

  1102. was unable

  1103. to move

  1104. and it burned

  1105. 60% of her

  1106. body badly

  1107. she was in

  1108. intensive care

  1109. and they

  1110. didn't hold

  1111. out much

  1112. hope

  1113. during that

  1114. time she

  1115. had a

  1116. daughter

  1117. who was

  1118. estranged

  1119. from her

  1120. mother

  1121. she wouldn't

  1122. speak to her

  1123. mother

  1124. she wouldn't

  1125. visit her

  1126. mother

  1127. she would

  1128. not even

  1129. go see her

  1130. mother on

  1131. her death

  1132. bed when

  1133. she was in

  1134. all that

  1135. pain in

  1136. the hospital

  1137. just before

  1138. she died

  1139. she said

  1140. this

  1141. tell her

  1142. her daughter

  1143. tell her

  1144. I'm going

  1145. to die

  1146. soon

  1147. I know

  1148. it

  1149. but tell

  1150. her

  1151. I have

  1152. forgiven

  1153. her

  1154. now what

  1155. I want

  1156. to say

  1157. to you

  1158. is that's

  1159. the way

  1160. forgiveness

  1161. works

  1162. when you

  1163. got it

  1164. in your

  1165. heart

  1166. you want

  1167. to let

  1168. that person

  1169. know

  1170. whatever

  1171. way

  1172. possible

  1173. I forgive

  1174. you

  1175. and it

  1176. is

  1177. liberating

  1178. it is

  1179. powerful

  1180. it is

  1181. compelling

  1182. it may

  1183. be the

  1184. single

  1185. most important

  1186. concept

  1187. in the

  1188. Christian

  1189. life

  1190. Jesus

  1191. forgave

  1192. his

  1193. message

  1194. to us

  1195. is

  1196. as I

  1197. have

  1198. forgiven

  1199. you

  1200. go and

  1201. forgive

  1202. has anybody

  1203. hurt you

  1204. anybody

  1205. done you

  1206. wrong

  1207. anybody

  1208. just done

  1209. something

  1210. that's not

  1211. right

  1212. big or

  1213. small

  1214. and you're

  1215. holding that

  1216. in your

  1217. heart

  1218. you won't

  1219. let go

  1220. of it

  1221. the most

  1222. freeing

  1223. releasing

  1224. powerful

  1225. thing

  1226. that you

  1227. can do

  1228. if that's

  1229. the case

  1230. is to

  1231. forgive

  1232. that person

  1233. now

  1234. sometimes

  1235. this happens

  1236. you hold

  1237. there for so

  1238. long that

  1239. person dies

  1240. and you're

  1241. still holding

  1242. that hurt

  1243. in your

  1244. heart

  1245. what can

  1246. you do

  1247. then

  1248. you still

  1249. can forgive

  1250. you still

  1251. can release

  1252. you can't

  1253. make the

  1254. circuit

  1255. complete

  1256. but you

  1257. can let

  1258. go

  1259. of the

  1260. hurt

  1261. you can

  1262. see the

  1263. person

  1264. differently

  1265. you can

  1266. cancel

  1267. the debt

  1268. anybody

  1269. you need

  1270. to

  1271. forgive

  1272. if there

  1273. is

  1274. would you

  1275. think about

  1276. praying about

  1277. it

  1278. and maybe

  1279. even this

  1280. week

  1281. as God

  1282. gives you

  1283. direction

  1284. to do

  1285. it

  1286. would you

  1287. just do

  1288. it

  1289. you say

  1290. do I

  1291. need to

  1292. talk to

  1293. that

  1294. person

  1295. maybe

  1296. maybe

  1297. not

  1298. most

  1299. cases

  1300. yes

  1301. because

  1302. you want

  1303. to make

  1304. that

  1305. circuit

  1306. complete

  1307. but if

  1308. they won't

  1309. hear you

  1310. they shut

  1311. the door

  1312. in your

  1313. face

  1314. they hang

  1315. up on

  1316. your phone

  1317. call

  1318. send them

  1319. a note

  1320. send them

  1321. an email

  1322. send them

  1323. a text

  1324. and let

  1325. them know

  1326. that you

  1327. forgive them

  1328. not in a

  1329. condescending

  1330. way

  1331. not in a

  1332. judgmental

  1333. way

  1334. but in a

  1335. genuinely

  1336. caring

  1337. way

  1338. like

  1339. Jesus

  1340. does

  1341. anybody

  1342. that you

  1343. need to

  1344. forgive

  1345. let's pray

  1346. together

  1347. father we

  1348. thank you

  1349. for the

  1350. power

  1351. and the

  1352. forgiveness

  1353. that you

  1354. empower

  1355. through us

  1356. we thank

  1357. you for

  1358. the

  1359. forgiveness

  1360. that you

  1361. give us

  1362. that is so

  1363. magnificent

  1364. so deep

  1365. so eternal

  1366. we'll never

  1367. get over it

  1368. help us

  1369. if we hold

  1370. on to

  1371. hurts

  1372. to get

  1373. over

  1374. ourselves

  1375. so that

  1376. we can

  1377. experience

  1378. a life

  1379. that reflects

  1380. obedience

  1381. to you

  1382. and finds

  1383. freedom

  1384. and not

  1385. bondage

  1386. from following

  1387. you

  1388. there's anyone

  1389. here that

  1390. really needs

  1391. to forgive

  1392. someone

  1393. I pray that

  1394. you would

  1395. give them

  1396. the grace

  1397. and the

  1398. strength

  1399. and the

  1400. courage

  1401. to do it

  1402. in Jesus

  1403. name

  1404. amen
