  1. Lisa told me a story several years ago about the debilitating power of fear.

  2. A family in her community had a break-in in their home.

  3. Several personal items were stolen.

  4. Well, from that time on, they lived in fear that it would happen again.

  5. They dealt with their fear by never leaving their house unattended.

  6. Either the husband or the wife would always stay at home, as they put it, to guard the house.

  7. They took turns going wherever they did.

  8. They took turns going to the store, going to church, even going to family gatherings.

  9. Now, everyone who knew their situation made fun of them.

  10. At family gatherings, someone would ask the one who was there,

  11. Well, where's Mary? Or where's John?

  12. Knowing the answer.

  13. But the man or the woman, they would always respond very seriously.

  14. He or she is at home, guarding the house.

  15. Now, that man and that woman, they were prisoners of their own fears and insecurities.

  16. They apparently had no concept of acting responsibly and trusting God with their lives, their possessions, their everything.

  17. Now, some Christians have similar insecurities.

  18. Do you?

  19. If I gave you a piece of paper this morning and asked you to write down your honest feelings about your relationship with God,

  20. what would you write?

  21. Would it be more, if you're honest now, would it be more about your fears?

  22. Or would it be more about the peace and joy you have because of your relationship with God?

  23. If you were to be totally honest, would you write down more about your doubts or your trust and confidence in God?

  24. Romans 8 is one of the most well-known and well-loved chapters in the Bible

  25. because it gives us as Christians reasons why we should be joyful,

  26. why we should have peace,

  27. why we should be able to live in confidence because we're trusting God.

  28. Now, many Christians consider that Romans 8, verses 31-39

    Romans 8:31–39

  29. contain the most convincing and comforting promises in all the Bible.

  30. I want us to look at those verses this morning.

  31. If you would, open your Bible to Romans 8, verses 31-39,

    Romans 8:31–39

  32. and I want us to see how God so powerfully assures us in these verses that He is for us.

  33. You know, we are going through an unprecedented time of crisis in our country right now.

  34. It's something that we can't get away from.

  35. It's on our minds constantly.

  36. It's something that every rational person knows it's real,

  37. and we need to take it very seriously.

  38. We as Christians, we have and will suffer loss during this crisis.

  39. Not all Christians, but some of us, we will suffer maybe a loss of health, job, money.

  40. Some may even lose their lives.

  41. You and I, here even in Pickens County,

  42. we may suffer some kind of real loss during this crisis.

  43. But I want us to understand, neither this virus nor any form of evil

  44. will defeat you or me if we are God's children.

  45. God's Word is clear.

  46. He is for us.

  47. I want you to make that personal.

  48. I want you to write your name in this line.

  49. God is for, put your name there.

  50. I am confident that God is for Fred Stone.

  51. Romans chapter 8, verses 31 through 39,

    Romans 8:31–39

  52. explain why we can have such confidence that God is for us.

  53. Look first in verses 32 and 33.

  54. God will never allow anything to destroy us.

  55. Let's read these verses.

  56. What then shall we say to these things?

  57. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  58. He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all,

  59. how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?

  60. Now look at that first question.

  61. What then shall we say to these things?

  62. These things refers to what's been said in the previous verses.

  63. For example, in verse 28, a verse that I have called attention to the last two Sundays.

  64. It says,

  65. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him,

  66. who have been called according to His purpose.

  67. Now think about it.

  68. Paul introduces the promises of verses 31 through 39 that explain how God is for us

  69. by reminding us that God works in all things for our good.

  70. Now look at the second question.

  71. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  72. Did you note, Paul does not ask who is against us?

  73. Because the truth is, many things are against us.

  74. Many things are against God and God's people.

  75. The devil is against us every day.

  76. And sometimes he stirs up some people to oppose us.

  77. There are all kinds of sinful and evil forces that are against us, that we do battle with.

  78. And what we're dealing with right now in our country, this crisis, it is against us.

  79. Paul's point is that since God is for us, it does not matter who is against us.

  80. It doesn't matter who or what opposes us.

  81. Having God on our side really is all that we need.

  82. But Paul doesn't stop here.

  83. He points out the most convincing way that God has shown that He is for us

  84. and that nothing can ever destroy us.

  85. Look at verse 32.

  86. He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all,

  87. how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?

  88. God has already given us the greatest gift that He could give.

  89. He gave His Son.

  90. There's nothing more precious to God than His Son.

  91. Now, if you are a parent, you understand that perfectly well.

  92. Think about what Paul is saying.

  93. If God has given His Son for us,

  94. we can be confident that God will never withhold anything from us

  95. that we need to serve His purpose.

  96. For illustration's sake, this is not going to happen,

  97. but let's just pretend.

  98. Suppose the president of BMW contacts you tomorrow

  99. and says that he has chosen you to receive a brand new BMW.

  100. All you've got to do is come to the Spartanburg plant,

  101. show your identification,

  102. and you can drive it home.

  103. It's yours.

  104. Now, what if you go to the plant tomorrow?

  105. You tell them your name.

  106. You show them your ID.

  107. They take you to where the car is parked.

  108. You get in there.

  109. You get ready to crank it up,

  110. but it won't start.

  111. It won't do anything.

  112. Well, you get out,

  113. and the people who are getting ready,

  114. you know, who are helping you with this,

  115. they pop the hood.

  116. There's no battery there.

  117. There's no battery in that brand new BMW.

  118. Now, that's not going to prevent you from getting the car.

  119. If the president of BMW has promised you that car,

  120. he's going to make sure that whatever you need

  121. to drive it home, you're going to get.

  122. Think about it.

  123. If God has already given his son for us,

  124. we can rest assured that he will give us everything else that we need,

  125. everything that we need to serve him,

  126. to be who it is he's called us to be in this world,

  127. in our families, in this community.

  128. God will never let anything destroy us.

  129. The next thing Paul tells us,

  130. God will never allow anything to condemn us.

  131. Look in verses 33 and 34.

  132. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?

  133. It is God who justifies.

  134. Who is to condemn?

  135. Christ Jesus is the one who died.

  136. More than that, who was raised,

  137. who is at the right hand of God,

  138. who indeed is interceding for us.

  139. Now, look at that first question.

  140. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?

  141. Or we could rephrase that,

  142. who can accuse God's chosen people?

  143. This question brings up the possibility

  144. of a Christian being accused of wrongdoing.

  145. Well, that does happen, doesn't it?

  146. Sometimes our own conscience even accuses us.

  147. Haven't you ever thought,

  148. how can I expect God to forgive me

  149. after doing something like that?

  150. The devil also accuses us.

  151. In fact, that's one of his main jobs.

  152. He is the accuser.

  153. He accuses us,

  154. he condemns us,

  155. and he tempts us to doubt

  156. that God has really forgiven us,

  157. even though we're trusting in Jesus

  158. and him alone for our salvation.

  159. But Paul wants us to understand

  160. that if we are united to Christ by faith,

  161. it doesn't matter who accuses us.

  162. It doesn't matter if it comes from within or without.

  163. God has, he tells us, justified us.

  164. Look at the phrase,

  165. it is God who justifies.

  166. That means he has declared us to be righteous.

  167. He has declared us to be right with him,

  168. and it's all through our faith in Jesus.

  169. Now, this does not mean,

  170. Paul's not saying that Christians never sin.

  171. We do, and we know that we do.

  172. But God declares that we are right with him,

  173. that we are not guilty before him,

  174. because Jesus has paid the penalty for our sins.

  175. He has taken our punishment

  176. through his death on the cross.

  177. If you have confessed your sins to God,

  178. I want you to know that he has forgiven you,

  179. and any lingering guilt that you have

  180. is unhealthy guilt.

  181. In fact, it's false guilt.

  182. We can be confident

  183. that whenever we sin against God,

  184. if we confess our sin,

  185. agree with God about it,

  186. turn from it, repent,

  187. God does forgive us.

  188. He cleanses us,

  189. and he restores us to fellowship with himself.

  190. Look at this verse from 1 John chapter 1.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  191. If we confess our sins,

  192. he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,

  193. and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  194. If you've sinned against God,

  195. but you're denying it,

  196. you're trying to act like everything's okay,

  197. if you've sinned against God,

  198. but you refuse to come to him

  199. in true, humble confession and repentance,

  200. you should feel guilty.

  201. That's real guilt.

  202. Now, sin in the life of a Christian

  203. does not destroy our relationship with God,

  204. but it certainly does destroy

  205. our close fellowship with him.

  206. That's why it is so important

  207. that we confess our sins

  208. as soon as we're convicted,

  209. as soon as we are aware

  210. that we have sinned against God,

  211. we have dishonored him,

  212. we need to confess it.

  213. We need to talk to God about it.

  214. We need to repent of it.

  215. Change our mind.

  216. Turn from it.

  217. Confession restores

  218. our real fellowship

  219. with our Heavenly Father.

  220. And when we humbly,

  221. brokenly

  222. confess our sins to God,

  223. we're demonstrating to him

  224. our desire to please him,

  225. our holy and loving Heavenly Father.

  226. Now look with me at the next question.

  227. Verse 34, the first part.

  228. Who is to condemn?

  229. Just like the previous question,

  230. there are many sources of condemnation

  231. in our lives.

  232. Again, our conscience,

  233. the devil,

  234. our enemies.

  235. But Paul ignores

  236. all sources of condemnation

  237. by assuring us

  238. that our Lord Jesus Christ,

  239. he is at the right hand

  240. of our Father

  241. interceding,

  242. speaking up for us.

  243. He's doing it right now.

  244. Look at the last part of verse 34.

  245. Christ Jesus,

  246. the one who died,

  247. more than that who was raised,

  248. who is at the right hand of God,

  249. who indeed is interceding for us.

  250. Look at how Jesus is described

  251. in that verse.

  252. It says he died.

  253. He died on the cross for our sins.

  254. It says he was raised.

  255. Jesus was brought back from the dead.

  256. He was raised by the power of God.

  257. And when God did that,

  258. he was demonstrating

  259. that he has accepted

  260. Jesus' sacrifice for us.

  261. The scripture verse says,

  262. he is now at the right hand of God

  263. interceding for us.

  264. Think about Jesus

  265. as our defense attorney.

  266. He's sitting right beside

  267. God the judge,

  268. defending us,

  269. speaking up for us,

  270. letting the Father know,

  271. he or she's with me.

  272. I've paid the penalty

  273. for their sins.

  274. I've made them right with you.

  275. And they're trusting me

  276. and resting in me for that.

  277. I can't imagine a more powerful way

  278. to describe how safe and secure

  279. we are

  280. if we are trusting in,

  281. resting in

  282. the Lord Jesus

  283. as our Savior and Lord.

  284. You know,

  285. right now,

  286. there's much uncertainty

  287. about what is happening

  288. to us,

  289. happening all around us

  290. in terms of

  291. physical health,

  292. financial stability,

  293. even

  294. our family's

  295. safety.

  296. We really don't know

  297. what God's will

  298. is

  299. about any of these things.

  300. We don't know

  301. God's will

  302. in advance

  303. about such things.

  304. But let's just be honest.

  305. The truth is,

  306. the reality is,

  307. everyone

  308. eventually

  309. dies.

  310. You,

  311. me,

  312. our family members.

  313. The truth is,

  314. we will leave

  315. everything we own

  316. behind.

  317. our money,

  318. our material

  319. possessions.

  320. We're not going to

  321. hold on to these

  322. things forever.

  323. They're just a part

  324. of life in this world.

  325. We're not going to

  326. take anything with us

  327. when we leave

  328. this world.

  329. You know,

  330. what I'm describing

  331. now,

  332. this is just a part

  333. of living in a

  334. fallen,

  335. sinful world.

  336. It was true

  337. before the

  338. present

  339. coronavirus crisis,

  340. and it'll be true

  341. after this passes.

  342. But we,

  343. as God's children,

  344. we can have

  345. confidence

  346. that right now

  347. in this world

  348. and for all

  349. eternity in heaven,

  350. that God

  351. is for us.

  352. God is with us.

  353. And God will

  354. take care of us.

  355. In Christ,

  356. united Christ

  357. by faith,

  358. we are

  359. eternally safe.

  360. and eternally

  361. secure.

  362. Let's look at

  363. this last

  364. promise.

  365. God will never

  366. let anything

  367. destroy us

  368. or condemn us,

  369. and God

  370. will never

  371. allow anything

  372. to separate us

  373. from His love

  374. and the love

  375. of Christ.

  376. Look with me,

  377. if you would,

  378. at verse 35,

  379. then verses

  380. 37 through 39.

  381. Who shall

  382. separate us

  383. from the love

  384. of Christ?

  385. Shall

  386. tribulation

  387. or distress

  388. or persecution

  389. or famine

  390. or nakedness

  391. or danger

  392. or sword?

  393. No,

  394. in all these

  395. things we are

  396. more than conquerors

  397. through Him

  398. who loved us.

  399. For I am sure

  400. that neither death

  401. nor life

  402. nor angels

  403. nor rulers

  404. nor things present

  405. nor things to come

  406. nor powers

  407. nor height

  408. nor depth

  409. nor anything else

  410. in all creation

  411. will be able

  412. to separate us

  413. from the love

  414. of God

  415. in Christ Jesus

  416. our Lord.

  417. A powerful

  418. statement,

  419. isn't it?

  420. Paul does

  421. his best

  422. to describe

  423. how nothing

  424. in all creation

  425. can ever

  426. separate us

  427. from His love

  428. and the love

  429. of the Lord Jesus.

  430. In his book,

  431. In the Grip

  432. of Grace,

  433. Brian Chappell

  434. tells a true story

  435. that's one of the

  436. best illustrations

  437. of the love

  438. of God

  439. and the love

  440. of Christ

  441. that I have

  442. ever read.

  443. Listen to this.

  444. On a Sunday,

  445. August the 16th,

  446. 1987,

  447. Northwest Airlines

  448. Flight 225

  449. crashed

  450. just after taking off

  451. from the Detroit

  452. Airport.

  453. 155 people

  454. were killed.

  455. One survived.

  456. A four-year-old girl

  457. from Tempe,

  458. Arizona

  459. named Cecilia.

  460. News accounts

  461. say that when

  462. rescuers found

  463. Cecilia,

  464. they did not believe

  465. she had been

  466. on the plane.

  467. The crash

  468. was so devastating

  469. it did not seem

  470. possible that anyone

  471. could have survived.

  472. Investigators

  473. first thought

  474. that Cecilia

  475. had been a passenger

  476. in one of the cars

  477. on the highway

  478. where the airliner

  479. crashed.

  480. But then they

  481. checked the flight's

  482. register,

  483. passenger register,

  484. and there was

  485. Cecilia's name.

  486. As the crash

  487. investigators

  488. meticulously

  489. pieced together

  490. the details

  491. of the crash

  492. along with

  493. Cecilia's

  494. personal account,

  495. the mystery

  496. of her survival

  497. disappeared

  498. in the story

  499. of her mother's

  500. heroic efforts.

  501. The experts

  502. explain that the

  503. reason Cecilia

  504. survived

  505. is that

  506. as the plane

  507. was falling

  508. out of the air,

  509. Cecilia's mother,

  510. Paula,

  511. unbuckled her

  512. own seatbelt,

  513. got down on her

  514. knees in front

  515. of her daughter,

  516. wrapped her arms

  517. and body

  518. around Cecilia,

  519. and would not

  520. let her go.

  521. Nothing could

  522. separate

  523. that child

  524. from her mother

  525. and her mother's

  526. love.

  527. Not tragedy

  528. or disaster,

  529. not falling

  530. from the sky

  531. or the flames

  532. that followed

  533. on the ground,

  534. not life

  535. or death.

  536. That is the love

  537. that the Lord

  538. has for us.

  539. That is the kind

  540. of love

  541. that He

  542. has

  543. for us

  544. today.

  545. Think about it.

  546. Jesus

  547. covered us

  548. with the sacrifice

  549. of His own

  550. body

  551. in order

  552. to save us.

  553. He will never

  554. let us go.

  555. He will never

  556. let you

  557. or me

  558. go.

  559. He

  560. He has

  561. taken care

  562. of us.

  563. He will

  564. take care

  565. of us.

  566. Nothing

  567. can ever

  568. separate us

  569. from His

  570. love.

  571. Not sin,

  572. not circumstances,

  573. not even

  574. the demons

  575. of hell.

  576. I want

  577. to encourage

  578. you.

  579. Read these

  580. verses,

  581. Romans 8

    Romans 8:31–39

  582. verses 31

  583. through 39

  584. again today

  585. and even

  586. this week

  587. leading up

  588. to Easter.

  589. Keep in

  590. mind that

  591. this is

  592. the Word

  593. of God

  594. to His

  595. children.

  596. God is

  597. for you.

  598. That's what

  599. this chapter,

  600. that's what

  601. this passage

  602. is telling

  603. us,

  604. promising

  605. us in

  606. great detail.

  607. God is

  608. for you.

  609. He will

  610. not allow

  611. anything

  612. to destroy

  613. you,

  614. to condemn

  615. you,

  616. or to

  617. separate

  618. you from

  619. His love

  620. and the

  621. love of

  622. Jesus Christ.

  623. If you

  624. are not

  625. a child

  626. of God,

  627. I want to

  628. encourage you

  629. to come

  630. to Him

  631. now.

  632. There is

  633. no better

  634. time than

  635. right now.

  636. And the

  637. scripture makes

  638. the way

  639. clear.

  640. Listen to

  641. this verse,

  642. for God

  643. so loved

  644. the world

  645. that He

  646. gave His

  647. only Son,

  648. that whoever

  649. believes in

  650. Him should

  651. not perish,

  652. but have

  653. eternal life.

  654. Listen to

  655. this promise,

  656. but to all

  657. who did

  658. receive Him,

  659. who believed

  660. in His

  661. name,

  662. He gave

  663. the right

  664. to become

  665. children

  666. of God.

  667. That's

  668. describing you.

  669. If you'll

  670. admit your

  671. sin,

  672. repent,

  673. put your

  674. trust in

  675. Jesus and

  676. call upon

  677. Him to

  678. save you,

  679. He will.

  680. You can

  681. become a

  682. child of

  683. God now

  684. through faith

  685. in Jesus.

  686. I want to

  687. close with

  688. some familiar

  689. words that

  690. come from a

  691. song that

  692. most of us

  693. learned as

  694. children.

  695. But these

  696. words,

  697. they're not

  698. just a

  699. children's

  700. song.

  701. These words

  702. can provide

  703. comfort and

  704. assurance

  705. to us at

  706. any age,

  707. at any

  708. time,

  709. and especially

  710. during this

  711. time of

  712. crisis.

  713. Listen,

  714. Jesus loves

  715. me.

  716. This I

  717. know,

  718. for the

  719. Bible tells

  720. me so.

  721. Let's pray

  722. together.

  723. Father,

  724. Father, we

  725. are so

  726. grateful for

  727. such promises

  728. of how you

  729. are for us,

  730. you are with

  731. us, and

  732. that you

  733. will now

  734. never allow

  735. anything to

  736. destroy us,

  737. to condemn

  738. us, or to

  739. separate us from

  740. your love.

  741. Father, I

  742. pray right

  743. now for

  744. Christians,

  745. members of

  746. our church

  747. family, who

  748. are struggling

  749. with doubt,

  750. who lack

  751. assurance, and

  752. the circumstances

  753. of this

  754. crisis have

  755. made those

  756. doubts

  757. increase.

  758. Lord, I

  759. pray that you

  760. will assure

  761. them that if

  762. they are trusting

  763. in Jesus and

  764. him alone for

  765. their salvation,

  766. they are your

  767. children.

  768. You will

  769. never leave

  770. them nor

  771. forsake them.

  772. Help them,

  773. Father, to

  774. rest in the

  775. promises of

  776. your word.

  777. I pray,

  778. Father, that you

  779. will replace

  780. their doubt

  781. with confidence

  782. today.

  783. I pray,

  784. Father, that you

  785. will help

  786. them to look

  787. to you, the

  788. objective truth,

  789. promises of

  790. your word.

  791. And,

  792. Father, I pray

  793. also that you

  794. will work

  795. inwardly through

  796. your spirit to

  797. assure them that

  798. you love them,

  799. that you have

  800. chosen them,

  801. that through

  802. faith in

  803. Jesus,

  804. they are and

  805. will be

  806. eternally

  807. secure.

  808. In Jesus'

  809. name we pray.

  810. Amen.

  811. Amen.
