  1. One of the first major non-human casualties of the coronavirus crisis was college basketball's biggest tournament, March Madness.

  2. Well, right after that, as most everyone knows, other sporting events were canceled.

  3. Now, we're living in a world that's basically where there's just no live sporting events taking place.

  4. Now, for many people in this sports-crazed world, this is the most devastating and depressing thing that's happened throughout this worldwide pandemic.

  5. I'm sure there are some people in South Carolina and beyond, church-going people,

  6. who were more concerned or more upset when Clemson canceled their spring football game than they were when their church canceled their first service.

  7. But, of course, I know no one in Pickens County or no one in our church would have ever been disappointed like that.

  8. It's the fact that many people in this world and in our country in particular have gone overboard in their involvement with some even worship of sports.

  9. Some people have just become obsessed with it.

  10. But, you know, the popularity of athletics, the popularity of athletes, it's not something new.

  11. It's not because of all the TV networks and all the things that are on TV today.

  12. Sports, sport events, athletic contests, they've been popular for centuries.

  13. If you're a reader of the New Testament, you know that the Apostle Paul was either a sports fan or he knew that many people were

  14. because in several of his letters, he uses sports analogies.

  15. Here's a good example from 1 Corinthians 9.

  16. He says,

  17. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.

  18. I do not run aimlessly.

  19. I do not box as one beating the air.

  20. The unknown author of Hebrews also uses what has become a well-known sports analogy.

  21. I want you to look at it with me this morning in Hebrews 12.

  22. It's in the first two verses.

  23. He talks about living the Christian life in terms of running a race.

  24. Let's look at it.

  25. Hebrews 12, verse 1.

    Hebrews 12:1

  26. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,

  27. let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely.

  28. Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

  29. looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,

  30. who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,

  31. despising the shame and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  32. The writer is describing in these verses Christian living

  33. in terms of running a long-distance race.

  34. It's important that we understand a long-distance race,

  35. a marathon, 10,000 meters,

  36. something much longer than a sprint.

  37. He's calling attention to how a successful athlete must run,

  38. disciplining himself, staying focused,

  39. enduring pain to illustrate living a faithful Christian life.

  40. Now, before we look at the details of these verses,

  41. we need to note that the writer has just spent the entire chapter 11

  42. describing men and women of the Old Testament

  43. and their faith, their faithfulness.

  44. In fact, in chapter 11,

  45. he is holding these Old Testament saints up as models for us.

  46. We're to look at them and be inspired

  47. and know that we can live out our faith.

  48. We can live faithfully just like they did.

  49. Now, it's encouraging to know

  50. that these models of faith that he holds up,

  51. they're far from perfect people.

  52. They were very flawed individuals just like us.

  53. They were sinners just like us.

  54. If you go back and read some of the names in Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  55. you'll remember from, I hope, your Bible reading,

  56. Abraham, he was a great man of faith,

  57. the father of the people of faith, people of God today.

  58. But Abraham was also known for lying.

  59. Moses, the great liberator of the people of Israel,

  60. he had anger issues at times, didn't he?

  61. Rahab is mentioned.

  62. She was a prostitute.

  63. And most Christians are familiar with the story of David,

  64. all of the positive things that he did as a king,

  65. as a great military leader, as the writer of Psalms.

  66. But he was also an adulterer and a murderer.

  67. Now, I want you to think,

  68. the fact that God uses imperfect, flawed, sinful people like them

  69. should encourage us that he can use us.

  70. They were flawed.

  71. There were times that they fell flat on their faces, spiritually speaking.

  72. By the grace of God, they always got up.

  73. And we can do the same thing.

  74. God can work in our lives to enable us to be faithful

  75. and to be used by him to serve good purposes,

  76. his good purposes in our homes, in this church, in this community.

  77. So I want us this morning to look.

  78. Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  79. I want us to see how we must cooperate with God

  80. as he works in us to help us run the race of faithful and useful Christian living.

  81. First thing I want us to see is that we must eliminate anything

  82. that may slow us down or trip us up.

  83. If we're going to run this race of faithful Christian living and be successful,

  84. we have got to eliminate anything that may slow us down,

  85. anything that may cause us to trip and fall.

  86. Look at verse 1, the second sentence.

  87. Let us also lay aside every weight and the sin which clings so closely.

  88. He's talking about eliminating two things.

  89. First, we must lay aside every weight that might slow us down.

  90. Just like an athlete,

  91. we've got to exercise the self-control and personal discipline

  92. to lay aside anything that may hinder us

  93. and prevent us from living a holy life

  94. and really being used by God.

  95. Examine yourself.

  96. Think about it.

  97. What have you found that slows you down

  98. or hinders you from living this kind of life?

  99. We're not talking about sinful things here.

  100. That'll come next.

  101. We're talking about things that anything here.

  102. It could be something good, something positive in and of itself.

  103. For an example, some people take a hobby too far.

  104. Some people become obsessed with playing golf, fishing, hunting.

  105. What could be a great form of recreation, relaxation, fellowship with others,

  106. it becomes an obsession.

  107. It takes all your time away from your family.

  108. Keeps you from being really involved in the life of the church.

  109. It may even be just distracting to you doing your job.

  110. Some people, it's their job.

  111. They're addicted to it.

  112. They're obsessed.

  113. And for them, their job is their life,

  114. not family and certainly not God.

  115. And then some people,

  116. it's the influence of a certain person in your life.

  117. Maybe a longtime friend.

  118. Maybe someone that has come into your life recently.

  119. It may be a certain group that when you hang out with them,

  120. it just drags you down spiritually.

  121. It causes you to think thoughts and engage in conversations

  122. that you know are not pleasing to God.

  123. And you'd really be ashamed for people at church to know

  124. that you were involved in such conversations or even activities.

  125. What about social media?

  126. Nothing's wrong with it.

  127. In and of itself, it could be a fun thing,

  128. a way to keep up with family and friends and things like that.

  129. But you know, as well as I do,

  130. social media has become an addiction to a lot of people.

  131. I want to ask you to just maybe do a time study sometime.

  132. Think about the amount of time you spend on Facebook,

  133. other forms of social media,

  134. or just surfing the internet.

  135. Maybe that will shed some light

  136. on why you find it hard to make time to pray,

  137. to spend some time just prayerfully,

  138. carefully, slowly reading the Bible,

  139. seeking to understand God's ways and God's will.

  140. You know, you might find that some of your social media,

  141. it's not just distracting you and your relationship with God.

  142. It's taking time away from meaningful face-to-face interaction

  143. with your children, with your spouse,

  144. with other people in your life

  145. that you need to be doing things with

  146. and be with in person.

  147. Social media,

  148. it can be a great way to keep up with people

  149. that you really want to keep up with,

  150. need to keep up with.

  151. But it is hindering many people's relationships,

  152. their relationship with God,

  153. their relationship with their family,

  154. their relationship,

  155. real relationship with friends.

  156. If that's true for you,

  157. even though it would be difficult,

  158. you need to lay it aside.

  159. Just like that hobby

  160. that is becoming an obsession,

  161. just like that person or that crowd

  162. that's dragging you down.

  163. We're told here,

  164. we've got to lay it aside

  165. because it is hindering us

  166. from living the faithful Christian life

  167. that God has called us to live.

  168. And really,

  169. if we are Christians,

  170. the life that we want to live ourselves.

  171. This past Tuesday,

  172. many members of our church

  173. prayed for spiritual awakening

  174. with over 200,000 Christians,

  175. probably from around the world,

  176. but especially in this country.

  177. What I want us to understand,

  178. as I mentioned at the beginning this morning,

  179. the first step to a spiritual awakening

  180. is for us to experience a personal spiritual renewal,

  181. for us to personally be broken over our sin

  182. and draw close to God in real loving fellowship.

  183. The second step to personal,

  184. to spiritual awakening is a church revival.

  185. When God does a work in so many of us,

  186. let's just say in our church,

  187. that He changes our church.

  188. He changes the focus, the priority,

  189. the spirit of our worship,

  190. the desires of our hearts.

  191. And then,

  192. after Christians have truly become spiritually awake,

  193. churches have revived,

  194. then we can expect to see God move in larger areas

  195. to bring about a true spiritual awakening

  196. that will touch even the lives of unsaved people.

  197. In fact,

  198. many will come to Christ as a result

  199. of such a spiritual awakening.

  200. I want to ask you,

  201. you prayed on Tuesday.

  202. Have you continued to pray?

  203. Have you continued to think about

  204. how we need to pray?

  205. for personal spiritual renewal,

  206. for church revival,

  207. for a big, wide spiritual awakening.

  208. What is hindering you

  209. from praying that way every day?

  210. What is hindering you

  211. from experiencing

  212. your own personal spiritual renewal?

  213. Think about it.

  214. What is hindering you

  215. from living a faithful,

  216. consistent Christian life?

  217. Well, God wants you to identify it.

  218. Name it.

  219. And ask Him to help you

  220. to work on it,

  221. to eliminate it.

  222. I want to encourage you.

  223. You know what it is.

  224. If you're a Christian,

  225. the Spirit of God lives within you.

  226. He'll make it known.

  227. He wants you to know.

  228. And deep down,

  229. if you are a child of God,

  230. you want to know.

  231. I want to encourage you.

  232. Stop allowing it

  233. to drag you down spiritually.

  234. Stop allowing it

  235. or him or her

  236. to pollute your heart and mind.

  237. Stop allowing it

  238. to waste your time.

  239. Don't allow anyone

  240. or anything

  241. to keep you

  242. from enjoying

  243. a personal,

  244. close relationship

  245. with God

  246. and being used

  247. by Him

  248. for His glory

  249. and other people's good.

  250. Look back in the verse.

  251. We see another way

  252. we've got to discipline ourselves

  253. in verse 1.

  254. We must lay aside

  255. every sin

  256. which clings so closely

  257. and trips us up.

  258. The writer has in mind

  259. a runner

  260. in that day

  261. in the ancient world,

  262. stripping off clothes

  263. that would slow Him down.

  264. All sin causes us to fall

  265. but every one of us

  266. have certain sins

  267. that keep tripping us up.

  268. What sin

  269. or sins

  270. do you find

  271. that keeps clinging to you

  272. or you are clinging to it

  273. and every few days

  274. or every few weeks

  275. it trips you up.

  276. You know what it is.

  277. One thing

  278. or a couple of things

  279. sinful attitudes,

  280. words or actions

  281. that is preventing you

  282. from living this faithful

  283. Christian life

  284. that we're being called here

  285. and told that we'll be

  286. enabled by God to do.

  287. In the context

  288. of this passage

  289. it could refer

  290. to

  291. the sin of

  292. not trusting God

  293. a lack of faith.

  294. He's been talking

  295. about that

  296. throughout the book

  297. of Hebrews.

  298. So let me just ask you

  299. do you really trust God

  300. in the details

  301. of your life?

  302. Are you more likely

  303. when problems arise

  304. to worry

  305. or to pray?

  306. Are you more likely

  307. to look to God

  308. for answers

  309. or look everywhere

  310. except to God?

  311. Do you really trust God

  312. as we're going through

  313. this pandemic?

  314. As we're going through

  315. this great unusual event?

  316. Are you trusting God

  317. looking to Him

  318. depending on Him?

  319. Or maybe your problem

  320. is a different kind of sin.

  321. You know what it is.

  322. Could be anger.

  323. That's your number one problem.

  324. It could be gossip

  325. or slander.

  326. It could be some type

  327. of sexual immorality,

  328. lust.

  329. Could be lying.

  330. You lie.

  331. You tell more lies

  332. to cover up lies.

  333. It could be

  334. it's just laziness.

  335. You just don't do

  336. what you know

  337. you need to do.

  338. It could be

  339. an alcohol

  340. or drug issue.

  341. You know what

  342. your major sin problem is.

  343. So I want to encourage you

  344. to ask God

  345. to help you

  346. to start resisting

  347. the temptation.

  348. Ask God to help you

  349. to not only resist

  350. the temptation

  351. but to overcome it.

  352. To develop

  353. godly and holy habits

  354. in place of this.

  355. Now if God

  356. is dealing with you

  357. right now

  358. about a specific sin

  359. or specific sins

  360. the first way

  361. you need to respond

  362. to God

  363. is to confess

  364. that sin.

  365. Agree with Him

  366. about it

  367. and turn from it.

  368. We have looked

  369. several times

  370. during these

  371. online sermons

  372. at 1 John 1.9.

  373. If we confess

  374. our sins

  375. He is faithful

  376. and just

  377. to forgive us

  378. of our sins

  379. and to cleanse us

  380. from all unrighteousness.

  381. One of my favorite verses.

  382. One of my most

  383. used verses.

  384. But it's also

  385. a great comfort

  386. to know

  387. that when I truly

  388. confess to God

  389. agree with God

  390. hate that sin

  391. turn from it

  392. He forgives.

  393. He cleanses.

  394. He gives me

  395. a fresh start

  396. and He will do

  397. that for you.

  398. It's also important

  399. to understand

  400. that whatever

  401. the temptation is

  402. regardless of how

  403. strong it may be

  404. you can resist it.

  405. You can overcome it.

  406. God clearly tells us

  407. we have His Word on it.

  408. Look at this

  409. in 1 Corinthians 10.

  410. No temptation

  411. has overtaken you

  412. that is not common

  413. to man.

  414. God is faithful

  415. and He will not

  416. let you be tempted

  417. beyond your ability

  418. but with the temptation

  419. He will also provide

  420. the way of escape

  421. that you may be able

  422. to endure it.

  423. God is faithful

  424. even when we're not.

  425. And if we're children

  426. of God

  427. the Scripture says here

  428. He will not let you

  429. be tempted

  430. beyond your ability.

  431. He will always provide

  432. a way of escape.

  433. Our problem is

  434. we don't always

  435. look for it.

  436. Our problem is

  437. we don't always

  438. take it when we do

  439. see it.

  440. But I want you

  441. to understand

  442. by God's grace

  443. you can eliminate

  444. whatever it is

  445. whatever sin

  446. whatever hindrance

  447. that is keeping you

  448. from running the race

  449. of faithful Christian living.

  450. but you've got to do

  451. what God calls you

  452. to do.

  453. You've got to

  454. obey Him

  455. and we move on

  456. in this passage

  457. and see some of our

  458. other responsibilities

  459. along this line.

  460. Number two

  461. we must put forth

  462. consistent effort

  463. and stay on course

  464. in order to run

  465. this race

  466. effectively.

  467. Look at the last part

  468. of verse one.

  469. Let us run

  470. with endurance

  471. the race

  472. that is set

  473. before us.

  474. This involves

  475. two things.

  476. He says we must

  477. run with endurance.

  478. An Olympic type

  479. long distance runner

  480. runs with the attitude

  481. that no matter what

  482. no matter how much

  483. pain I feel

  484. in my knees

  485. or ankles

  486. or whatever

  487. no matter how

  488. exhausted I am

  489. I will not quit.

  490. I will not stop.

  491. I am going

  492. to finish

  493. the race.

  494. Well that's the kind

  495. of determination

  496. we've got to have

  497. when it comes to

  498. living a faithful

  499. Christian life

  500. every day.

  501. You know as well

  502. as I do

  503. too many people

  504. have professed

  505. faith in Jesus

  506. gave the appearance

  507. of starting to live

  508. a Christian life

  509. starting down

  510. the path

  511. starting down

  512. the race

  513. but somewhere

  514. along the line

  515. sooner or later

  516. they dropped

  517. out

  518. they quit.

  519. No doubt

  520. you have thought

  521. of some people

  522. some individuals

  523. who have done

  524. that.

  525. It may be

  526. that

  527. the truth

  528. is

  529. that describes

  530. you.

  531. Be honest.

  532. What I want us

  533. to understand

  534. is that all

  535. Christians

  536. struggle

  537. at times

  538. to stay faithful.

  539. The Christian

  540. life is never

  541. a cakewalk.

  542. It's never

  543. a stroll

  544. in the park

  545. for any

  546. Christian.

  547. Christian life

  548. is a true

  549. race

  550. an agonizing

  551. long

  552. distant

  553. race.

  554. Every true

  555. child of God

  556. will stumble

  557. and fall

  558. at times

  559. but every

  560. true child

  561. of God

  562. will sooner

  563. or later

  564. get up.

  565. that's

  566. because God

  567. will enable

  568. us

  569. to get up.

  570. Paul

  571. was confident

  572. of that

  573. when he wrote

  574. this in the book

  575. of Philippians

  576. and I am sure

  577. of this

  578. that he

  579. who began

  580. a good work

  581. in you

  582. will bring

  583. it to completion

  584. at the day

  585. of Jesus Christ.

  586. God

  587. will not allow

  588. his true

  589. children

  590. to drop

  591. out

  592. of the race

  593. of Christian

  594. living

  595. and stay

  596. out.

  597. There may be

  598. times you

  599. are a

  600. committed

  601. Christian

  602. now

  603. but there

  604. were times

  605. when you

  606. walked away

  607. from the

  608. Lord.

  609. Maybe you

  610. fell

  611. deeply

  612. into sin

  613. but God

  614. wouldn't leave

  615. you there.

  616. He rescued

  617. you.

  618. He picked

  619. you up.

  620. He dusted

  621. you off.

  622. You confessed

  623. your sin.

  624. You repented.

  625. He forgave

  626. you and gave

  627. you a fresh

  628. start.

  629. That's what

  630. God does

  631. in the life

  632. of every

  633. one of his

  634. children.

  635. You know

  636. it's not

  637. easy.

  638. ever

  639. to run

  640. the race

  641. of faithful

  642. Christian

  643. living.

  644. But God

  645. does not

  646. leave us

  647. alone.

  648. God

  649. does not

  650. ever tell

  651. us just

  652. do the

  653. best that

  654. you can.

  655. God

  656. works in

  657. us from

  658. within

  659. through his

  660. spirit.

  661. It's God

  662. who gives

  663. us this

  664. desire.

  665. And it's

  666. God who

  667. is the

  668. one who

  669. gives us

  670. the power

  671. to be

  672. faithful.

  673. One of my

  674. favorite

  675. verses

  676. in all of

  677. scripture,

  678. Philippians

  679. 2.13.

  680. Paul said,

  681. for it is

  682. God who

  683. works in

  684. you both

  685. to will

  686. and to

  687. work for

  688. his good

  689. pleasure.

  690. We're not

  691. in this race

  692. on our

  693. own.

  694. God,

  695. through his

  696. spirit,

  697. lives in

  698. us.

  699. And he

  700. will enable

  701. us to be

  702. faithful.

  703. But he

  704. does require

  705. us to

  706. cooperate.

  707. cooperate.

  708. I want

  709. us to

  710. look at

  711. one more

  712. thing.

  713. Here in

  714. this one,

  715. at the

  716. end of

  717. verse 1.

  718. We are

  719. responsible

  720. to cooperate

  721. with him.

  722. Look at

  723. this.

  724. We must

  725. run with

  726. endurance the

  727. race that

  728. is set

  729. before us.

  730. The long

  731. distance

  732. runner's

  733. got to

  734. run the

  735. race along

  736. the course

  737. that has

  738. been marked

  739. out for

  740. him.

  741. He can't

  742. take a

  743. shortcut.

  744. He certainly

  745. wouldn't want

  746. to take a

  747. detour.

  748. He's got

  749. to run

  750. the race

  751. that's been

  752. marked out

  753. in order to

  754. stay qualified.

  755. Well,

  756. God has

  757. marked out

  758. a particular

  759. course for

  760. you and

  761. for me.

  762. In fact,

  763. God has

  764. marked out

  765. a particular

  766. course,

  767. a race,

  768. uniquely for

  769. you and

  770. then for

  771. me.

  772. Truth is,

  773. some of us

  774. have a more

  775. easy race

  776. than others.

  777. Some people,

  778. the race

  779. that God

  780. has marked

  781. out for

  782. them,

  783. most of

  784. the race

  785. is smooth.

  786. Not many

  787. hills and

  788. valleys.

  789. But then

  790. there are

  791. other

  792. Christians,

  793. other

  794. faithful men

  795. and women

  796. of God.

  797. For whatever

  798. reason,

  799. God's

  800. course for

  801. them has

  802. a lot

  803. more hills,

  804. a lot

  805. more valleys,

  806. even

  807. potholes

  808. along the

  809. way.

  810. people.

  811. But I

  812. want us

  813. to understand

  814. that whatever

  815. course of

  816. life that

  817. God has

  818. called us

  819. to,

  820. we must

  821. endure,

  822. we must

  823. persevere,

  824. we must

  825. always keep

  826. on remaining

  827. faithful with

  828. confidence that

  829. God's going to

  830. enable us.

  831. Day in and

  832. day out,

  833. God is going

  834. to work in

  835. us to

  836. enable us

  837. if we

  838. will.

  839. I want to

  840. ask you,

  841. are you

  842. putting forth

  843. consistent

  844. effort to

  845. stay in

  846. the race,

  847. to stay

  848. on course,

  849. to live the

  850. Christian life

  851. that you

  852. know God's

  853. calling to

  854. and deep

  855. down you

  856. want to

  857. live?

  858. If not,

  859. why not?

  860. What needs

  861. to change?

  862. Is it an

  863. attitude?

  864. Is it a

  865. lifestyle?

  866. Do you

  867. need to get

  868. serious about

  869. spending time

  870. with God,

  871. talking to

  872. Him in

  873. prayer,

  874. listening to

  875. Him as

  876. you read

  877. His Word?

  878. No one can

  879. live the

  880. Christian life

  881. without spending

  882. time with

  883. God like

  884. this.

  885. No one.

  886. You know

  887. what you

  888. need to do.

  889. God always

  890. makes it

  891. clear to us.

  892. So I want

  893. to encourage

  894. you to ask

  895. Him and

  896. then obey

  897. Him.

  898. Do it

  899. now.

  900. Our final

  901. responsibility is

  902. the most

  903. important one.

  904. It's the most

  905. important one

  906. because of

  907. where we're

  908. looking and

  909. because Jesus

  910. will enable us

  911. to be successful

  912. in all these

  913. other things.

  914. Look there.

  915. We must stay

  916. focused on our

  917. goal and our

  918. goal is Jesus.

  919. Verse 2,

  920. looking to

  921. Jesus, the

  922. founder and

  923. perfecter of

  924. our faith,

  925. who for the

  926. joy that was

  927. set before

  928. Him endured

  929. the cross,

  930. despising the

  931. shame, and

  932. is seated at

  933. the right

  934. hand of

  935. the throne

  936. of God.

  937. The Olympic

  938. runner runs

  939. with his

  940. eyes on

  941. one goal,

  942. the finish

  943. line, to

  944. get the

  945. prize, whatever

  946. it might be.

  947. Well, we've

  948. got to run

  949. our race with

  950. our eyes fixed

  951. upon our Lord

  952. Jesus.

  953. And the writer

  954. here explains

  955. why in the rest

  956. of verse 2.

  957. Jesus is the

  958. founder and

  959. perfecter of

  960. our faith.

  961. Everything about

  962. the Christian

  963. life, it

  964. begins, it

  965. continues and

  966. ends with

  967. Jesus.

  968. And there's a

  969. special focus

  970. in Scripture

  971. on His death

  972. on the cross

  973. for our sins.

  974. Now, in

  975. keeping with

  976. this race

  977. imagery, He

  978. has cleared

  979. the path for

  980. us to run in

  981. terms of He

  982. has eliminated

  983. the roadblocks,

  984. things that

  985. would stop us.

  986. He has

  987. eliminated through

  988. His death and

  989. resurrection.

  990. But all of

  991. us, along

  992. the way, as

  993. we run this

  994. race, there

  995. are hills and

  996. valleys.

  997. There are

  998. obstacles that

  999. we've got to

  1000. overcome, that

  1001. we've got to

  1002. endure.

  1003. But the Lord

  1004. always promises

  1005. He'll never

  1006. leave us nor

  1007. forsake us.

  1008. He is with

  1009. us.

  1010. Look also,

  1011. Jesus has

  1012. already endured

  1013. the cross,

  1014. despising the

  1015. shame, and

  1016. is seated at

  1017. the right hand

  1018. of the throne

  1019. of God.

  1020. The cross was

  1021. the lowest form

  1022. of execution

  1023. in the Roman

  1024. world.

  1025. A Roman

  1026. citizen could

  1027. not be

  1028. executed by

  1029. crucifixion no

  1030. matter what

  1031. his crime was.

  1032. Crucifixion was

  1033. the way of

  1034. execution for

  1035. the lowest of

  1036. the low.

  1037. It was,

  1038. it involved

  1039. torture.

  1040. It was

  1041. exposed, the

  1042. person who

  1043. was being

  1044. crucified to

  1045. public

  1046. humiliation.

  1047. Well, the

  1048. scripture says

  1049. that Jesus

  1050. willingly endured

  1051. that death

  1052. and chose to

  1053. disregard that

  1054. shame.

  1055. Do you know

  1056. why?

  1057. The scripture

  1058. tells us here,

  1059. Jesus did that

  1060. for the joy

  1061. that was set

  1062. before Him.

  1063. Again, in verse

  1064. two, Jesus

  1065. looked beyond

  1066. the horror,

  1067. the pain,

  1068. the suffering

  1069. of the cross

  1070. to the joy

  1071. that He would

  1072. experience on

  1073. the other side.

  1074. And that joy

  1075. involved two

  1076. things.

  1077. One is stated

  1078. right here.

  1079. He knew that He

  1080. would return to

  1081. His place of

  1082. honor, look at

  1083. it, seated at

  1084. the right hand

  1085. of the throne

  1086. of God.

  1087. But He also

  1088. knew that having

  1089. completed His

  1090. work on the

  1091. cross, He

  1092. salvation would

  1093. be provided

  1094. for every

  1095. person who

  1096. would ever

  1097. believe in

  1098. Him.

  1099. That gave

  1100. Him joy

  1101. to know He

  1102. was going

  1103. back to the

  1104. Father, seated

  1105. at the right

  1106. hand of the

  1107. Father, interceding

  1108. for us, His

  1109. people.

  1110. It brought

  1111. Jesus joy to

  1112. know that on

  1113. the other side,

  1114. after His death

  1115. and resurrection,

  1116. salvation would

  1117. be freely

  1118. proclaimed as

  1119. a gift to

  1120. all who will

  1121. receive Him

  1122. as their

  1123. Savior and

  1124. Lord.

  1125. We need to

  1126. keep our

  1127. eyes of

  1128. faith firmly

  1129. on Jesus

  1130. every day.

  1131. And I want

  1132. you to think

  1133. about two

  1134. reasons we

  1135. ought to do

  1136. that.

  1137. First, we

  1138. are to follow

  1139. His example.

  1140. And what

  1141. Jesus did there

  1142. on the cross,

  1143. He demonstrates,

  1144. exemplifies,

  1145. that we can

  1146. endure whatever

  1147. pain, whatever

  1148. suffering, whatever

  1149. hardship comes

  1150. our way in

  1151. life.

  1152. And for

  1153. some people,

  1154. life is

  1155. extremely hard.

  1156. Life's not

  1157. fair for

  1158. anyone.

  1159. Life is

  1160. difficult at

  1161. times for

  1162. everyone.

  1163. But what this

  1164. writer is saying,

  1165. by looking beyond

  1166. whatever it is we

  1167. have to suffer,

  1168. looking beyond it

  1169. to the joy we

  1170. will experience as

  1171. God's children

  1172. when we cross

  1173. that finish line

  1174. and enter into

  1175. His presence.

  1176. That joy should

  1177. motivate us.

  1178. And Jesus'

  1179. example of

  1180. looking toward

  1181. that with joy

  1182. is one we

  1183. need to follow.

  1184. But also,

  1185. we need to keep

  1186. our eyes firmly

  1187. fixed on Jesus

  1188. to experience

  1189. His power.

  1190. Jesus empowers

  1191. us day by day,

  1192. even moment by

  1193. moment, week

  1194. by week, to run

  1195. the race of

  1196. faithful Christian

  1197. living.

  1198. He empowers us

  1199. by indwelling us

  1200. with His Spirit.

  1201. You know, the

  1202. Holy Spirit is

  1203. called at times

  1204. in Scripture

  1205. the Spirit of

  1206. God, but He's

  1207. also called at

  1208. times the Spirit

  1209. of Christ.

  1210. Romans chapter

    Romans 8:9

  1211. 8, verse 9

  1212. is a good example

  1213. of that.

  1214. How does Jesus

  1215. live with us

  1216. today?

  1217. Through the

  1218. person of the

  1219. Holy Spirit

  1220. who indwells

  1221. us.

  1222. The way God

  1223. intends for us

  1224. to live the

  1225. faithful Christian

  1226. life today is

  1227. to be motivated

  1228. by the example

  1229. of Jesus and

  1230. to be empowered

  1231. by the Spirit

  1232. of Jesus who

  1233. lives in us.

  1234. If we will,

  1235. we will be able

  1236. to have the

  1237. experience on an

  1238. ongoing basis.

  1239. Like the Apostle

  1240. Paul when he

  1241. made this statement,

  1242. I can do all

  1243. things through

  1244. Him, Christ,

  1245. who strengthens

  1246. me.

  1247. You know,

  1248. we'll never be

  1249. able to live a

  1250. faithful Christian

  1251. life that honors

  1252. God and brings

  1253. joy and satisfaction

  1254. to our own lives

1255. if all we do is

  1256. dwell on our

  1257. circumstances,

  1258. dwell on our

  1259. feelings,

  1260. or what the

  1261. world offers us

  1262. and tempts us

  1263. with.

  1264. Instead, what we've

  1265. got to always

  1266. remember, Jesus is

  1267. the goal.

1268. He is to be our

  1269. focus.

  1270. We've got to

  1271. follow His

  1272. example.

  1273. We've got to

  1274. depend on His

  1275. power.

  1276. And we do need

  1277. to look beyond

  1278. our sufferings,

  1279. our difficulties,

  1280. to the joy that

  1281. is in store for

  1282. us when we cross

  1283. the finish line

  1284. and enter the

  1285. presence of our

  1286. Lord Jesus.

  1287. That is something

  1288. that is going to

  1289. happen one day.

  1290. and throughout

  1291. the Bible, that

  1292. reward is spoken

1293. of in a way that

  1294. should motivate us

  1295. and encourage us.

  1296. Be faithful today.

  1297. Be faithful in

  1298. what is really a

  1299. short span of

  1300. life so that we

  1301. can experience God's

  1302. eternal blessings

  1303. and rewards and

  1304. joys forever.

  1305. That's what the

  1306. Apostle Paul did.

  1307. That's what enabled

  1308. him to run the

  1309. faithful Christian

  1310. life or live the

  1311. faithful Christian

  1312. life, run the race

  1313. to the very end.

1314. And in the book of

  1315. 2 Timothy, Paul is

  1316. approaching the

  1317. finish line.

  1318. He knows that death

  1319. is soon to come.

  1320. And as he thought

  1321. about that, as he

  1322. was coming to the

  1323. end, thinking about

  1324. going into the

  1325. presence of the

  1326. Lord, listen to what

  1327. he said.

  1328. I have fought the

  1329. good fight.

  1330. I have finished the

  1331. race.

  1332. I have kept the

  1333. faith.

  1334. Now there is in

  1335. store for me the

  1336. crown of righteousness,

  1337. which the Lord, the

  1338. righteous judge, will

1339. award to me on that

1340. day, and not only to

1341. me, but all who have

  1342. longed for his

  1343. appearing.

  1344. When you approach the

  1345. finish line of life

  1346. one day, will you

  1347. have that kind of

  1348. confidence as you

  1349. think about crossing

  1350. over the line from

  1351. this world to the

  1352. next and entering

  1353. into the presence of

  1354. Jesus?

  1355. If you don't, I

  1356. encourage you to do

  1357. whatever is necessary

  1358. right now to get

  1359. that kind of

  1360. confidence.

  1361. If you're not a

  1362. Christian, admit your

  1363. sin, turn from it,

  1364. put your trust in

  1365. Jesus right now, call

1366. on him to save you.

  1367. If you are a

  1368. Christian who's away

  1369. from the Lord, if

  1370. this message this

  1371. morning has just

  1372. beat you up, because

  1373. everything that a

  1374. Christian should be and

1375. do and trust, it's not

  1376. what you're doing now.

1377. Just admit that to God.

  1378. Don't make excuses.

  1379. Confess your sins.

  1380. Seek his forgiveness.

  1381. Experience his

  1382. cleansing.

  1383. Draw close to him.

1384. But I know that many

  1385. Christians, many members

1386. of our church, you have

  1387. that confidence.

  1388. You have that confidence

  1389. not because you've lived a

  1390. perfect life, but because

1391. you are truly trusting in

  1392. Jesus.

  1393. You love him.

  1394. You're trusting him.

  1395. You're seeking to follow

  1396. him, to serve him.

1397. And the idea of entering

1398. into his presence brings a

  1399. smile to your face.

1400. If that describes you, then

1401. thank the Lord for the way

1402. he has worked in you and

1403. just draw closer to him

  1404. right now.

  1405. Express your thanks.

1406. Tell him how much you love

  1407. him.

  1408. Let's pray together.

  1409. Father,

1410. help every Christian to see

1411. where they are along the race

  1412. of faithful Christian living.

1413. Help them to see, Father,

  1414. if they have allowed

  1415. maybe even good things

  1416. to hinder their progress.

1417. Help them to see if they

  1418. have allowed certain sins

1419. to trip them up over and

  1420. over and over again.

1421. Help them, Father, to lay

  1422. these things aside,

  1423. to eliminate them,

1424. to not let them continue

1425. to get in the way,

1426. to rob them of a close

  1427. relationship with you.

1428. Father, help us all to see

1429. just how serious we are

  1430. about showing discipline,

  1431. exercising discipline,

  1432. enduring hardship,

  1433. and persevering in living

  1434. this faithful Christian life.

1435. Help us to see that is

1436. necessary, but you will help

  1437. us, enable us,

1438. by giving us the desires

  1439. and the ability

  1440. to be successful.

1441. Lord, help each of us

1442. to really see right now

1443. just how focused in we are

  1444. on Jesus,

1445. looking to him as an example,

1446. but also looking to him

  1447. for power.

1448. Show us all how we need

  1449. to respond,

  1450. and help us, Father,

1451. to respond in such a way

1452. that we go on from here

  1453. today,

  1454. running the race

  1455. of faithful Christian

  1456. living for your glory,

  1457. other people's good,

  1458. and our own joy

  1459. and satisfaction.

1460. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1461. Amen.

  1462. Amen.

  1463. Amen.

  1464. Amen.

  1465. Amen.

  1466. Amen.

  1467. Amen.

  1468. Amen.

  1469. Amen.

  1470. Amen.

  1471. Amen.

  1472. Amen.

  1473. Amen.

  1474. Amen.

  1475. Amen.
