  1. Okay.

  2. Okay.

  3. It's hard to believe that we are in the ninth consecutive week

  4. of not meeting together in this building for worship.

  5. But Lord willing, we will be together next Sunday, May the 24th.

  6. We're going to have three services.

  7. Hopefully you already know that, that 8 o'clock at 9.30 and 11 a.m.

  8. Now, since we will be practicing social distancing,

  9. things will look a little different.

  10. But I think once we get together, everything will just feel right

  11. because we're back together as God's people,

  12. worshiping Him, praising Him, studying His Word together.

  13. It's going to be a great day.

  14. I think it'll be a real special day as we come back together

  15. after all this time apart.

  16. Now, as churches begin to regather,

  17. expect to hear and see things that are critical

  18. of the fact that we have not been meeting,

  19. that we've closed our doors in response to this COVID-19 pandemic.

  20. Some will criticize Christian leaders

  21. for not taking a stand against the government.

  22. Some are going to say all this is, is Christians have compromised.

  23. They've caved in to government overreach.

  24. In fact, some are already saying that.

  25. Well, I have refrained from addressing this issue

  26. throughout our time of being away.

  27. It's been my goal, my prayer, to bring messages from God's Word

  28. that comfort, that encourage, that give hope during this time.

  29. But today, our final time together online,

  30. away from publicly gathering together for worship.

  31. Today, I want us to look at three biblically-based reasons

  32. for why it was right for us to do what we've done

  33. and not be together as a way to combat the coronavirus.

  34. First, we have demonstrated love by stopping our large group gatherings.

  35. We have demonstrated love by not meeting together.

  36. Let me explain how that is.

  37. Most of you are familiar with the way Jesus responded to the question,

  38. what is the greatest commandment?

  39. It's recorded in Mark chapter 12 and in Matthew chapter 22.

Mark 12 chapter mention Matthew 22 chapter mention

  40. Look with me in Matthew 22 as we read this, beginning in verse 36.

  41. Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?

  42. And he said to him,

  43. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart

  44. and with all your soul and with all your mind.

  45. This is the great and first commandment.

  46. And a second is like it.

  47. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  48. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.

  49. And note that Jesus was only asked one question.

  50. What's the greatest commandment in the law?

  51. Well, Jesus answered that question, but he continued.

  52. He did not stop.

  53. And he went on to say,

  54. And a second is like it.

  55. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  56. Jesus made it very clear.

  57. Our love for God cannot be separated from our love for people.

  58. If we love God, we must love people who have been created in his image.

  59. Now, Jesus further explained our responsibility to love our neighbor in Luke chapter 10 in the story of the Good Samaritan.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  60. Many of you are familiar with that story.

  61. Well, Jesus told it in response to the question,

  62. Who is my neighbor?

  63. The story of the Good Samaritan is Jesus' answer to that question.

  64. Here's the answer.

  65. Whoever God places in your path that has a need that you can meet,

  66. Well, that's your neighbor.

  67. That's who you are to love as yourself.

  68. Now, to love our neighbor as ourselves, let's just think about it practically.

  69. That means we seek the welfare.

  70. We seek the good of whoever God places in our lives to the best of our ability.

  71. Now, we can apply that in a lot of ways.

  72. It needs to be first applied at home.

  73. People we live with.

  74. Some of you know what it means to apply it with the people you work with,

  75. maybe the people in your neighborhood,

  76. or occasionally a stranger God brings into your life that you need to love as that good Samaritan did.

  77. But right now, let's apply the principle of love your neighbor as yourself to the coronavirus pandemic.

  78. Health care experts have found that one of the most effective ways for stopping the spread of this virus

  79. is to practice social distancing.

  80. That's why the CDC issued around mid-March a directive that called for the cancellation of any gathering over 50 people.

  81. And they said to do that for the next eight weeks.

  82. Well, you know that it wasn't long before they lowered that to 10 people.

  83. And in South Carolina, we have been told that we are to limit public gatherings to no more than three,

  84. or three are even prohibited.

  85. Now, the CDC's advisory resulted in the cancellation of virtually every large event,

  86. every large group gathering in our country,

  87. including all sports events.

  88. Now, think about that.

  89. That was huge in this country.

  90. And then it was followed by schools, restaurants, businesses.

  91. Churches were either ordered or advised to close for the same reason.

  92. All these other businesses, large group gatherings, sports, were shut down

  93. to stop the spread of the coronavirus and save lives.

  94. Loving our neighbor as ourselves,

  95. it means that we seek the welfare of the people around us.

  96. For the past two months,

  97. we have shown love by not meeting together

  98. to avoid exposing anyone to the coronavirus

  99. or spreading it.

  100. Now, everybody I know has at least in some way

  101. tried to avoid exposing themselves to this virus.

  102. I know I have, and I'm sure you have as well.

  103. Why have we done that?

  104. Well, in light of the second commandment,

  105. it's because we love ourselves.

  106. We take care of ourselves.

  107. And that's not being selfish or sinful.

  108. It's really just being human, isn't it?

  109. The reason Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself

  110. is because we naturally love ourselves

  111. and take care of ourselves.

  112. If I go outside and cross the street,

  113. I'm going to stop and look to make sure no cars are coming.

  114. I'm going to take care of myself

  115. and not step out in front of a car.

  116. You do the same thing.

  117. You know, every year there is a rise

  118. in the number of flu cases around.

  119. Sometimes it's a large number of people

  120. coming down with the flu.

  121. Every year I take note of that.

  122. I try to avoid being around people who have the flu

  123. because I don't want to catch it.

  124. And I know most of you do the same thing.

  125. All normal people do things like that.

  126. It's a part of our God-given sense of self-preservation

  127. or self-love.

  128. Just as we try to avoid exposing ourselves

  129. to anything that would harm us,

  130. including the coronavirus,

  131. love should compel us to do the same thing for others.

  132. Just as we love ourselves,

  133. we look out for ourselves.

  134. So we should love others and look out for them.

  135. This is the reason why so many churches

  136. all across this country have voluntarily

  137. stopped meeting together publicly

  138. once it became known

  139. that it was best to avoid large public gatherings.

  140. Once it became known,

  141. that's one of the best ways to stop

  142. the spread of this terrible virus.

  143. Now, we here at Pickens First Baptist,

  144. we voluntarily chose to stop meeting

  145. the week of March the 15th

  146. when the governor closed our schools.

  147. My thinking was,

  148. children, that age group,

  149. is the least likely group

  150. to have complications from the coronavirus

  151. that are serious and life-threatening.

  152. Now, if DHEC says it's time to close schools

  153. because of the coronavirus,

  154. that said to me,

  155. it's time for us to stop gathering as a church.

  156. I also realized the last Sunday that we met,

  157. on March the 15th,

  158. as I was just looking around during the services,

  159. we had a lot of individuals sitting here

  160. who are in the CDC's at-risk group

  161. for developing life-threatening complications

  162. from this coronavirus.

  163. I realized, I thought about it that morning

  164. as we were going through the service,

  165. that if we had an outbreak of this

  166. among our church family,

  167. we very well could see some of our members die from it.

  168. And then that Monday,

  169. schools were canceled.

  170. I knew we must stop meeting.

  171. And every other leader in our church

  172. was in agreement.

  173. The first and most important reason

  174. why we've stopped meeting together

  175. in our large group gatherings on Sundays

  176. is because we love our neighbor as ourselves.

  177. It's been the right thing to do,

  178. the loving thing to do.

  179. That's not the only reason.

  180. Look at this.

  181. We have done our duty

  182. by stopping our large group gatherings.

  183. We have a God-given responsibility

  184. to obey government authority

  185. unless that authority requires us

  186. to sin against God.

  187. You know the passage from Romans chapter 13

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  188. that stresses this.

  189. Look with me if you would.

  190. Romans chapter 13.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  191. The entire section is verses 1 through 7.

  192. Let's just read verses 1 through 4 right now.

  193. Paul writes,

  194. Let every person be subject

  195. to the governing authorities.

  196. For there is no authority except from God,

  197. and those that exist have been instituted by God.

  198. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities

  199. resists what God has appointed,

  200. and those who resist will incur judgment.

  201. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct,

  202. but to bad.

  203. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority?

  204. Then do what is good,

  205. and you will receive his approval.

  206. For he is God's servant for your good.

  207. Now think about when Paul wrote that,

  208. what his government leaders were like.

  209. Paul wrote that living under the pagan Roman government.

  210. The emperor at that time was the brutal Nero.

  211. So obviously,

  212. Paul is not commending

  213. that government

  214. or that emperor.

  215. His point though

  216. is that God uses all kinds of government,

  217. all kinds of government leaders,

  218. even evil ones,

  219. to accomplish his purpose.

  220. Now I want to be real honest.

  221. I am like most Americans today

  222. in that I don't really trust our government.

  223. I'm not very trusting at all

  224. when it comes to thinking about

  225. our government right now.

  226. I agree wholeheartedly

  227. with my favorite president,

  228. Ronald Reagan,

  229. when he said,

  230. the most terrifying words

  231. in the English language are,

  232. I'm from the government,

  233. and I'm here to help.

  234. But the Bible is clear.

  235. God calls us

  236. to obey governmental authority

  237. whether we trust it or not.

  238. The exception,

  239. and this is obvious,

  240. the exception is that,

  241. is when that authority

  242. tries to force us

  243. to disobey God

  244. or sin against God.

  245. That happened to the early church leaders

  246. and they show us

  247. how we should respond

  248. when that happens.

  249. In Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  250. it says this,

  251. but Peter and the apostles answered,

  252. we must obey God

  253. rather than men.

  254. Now,

  255. our government

  256. and healthcare leaders

  257. have overall

  258. acted responsibly

  259. as God's servants

  260. for your good

  261. during this pandemic.

  262. They have tried

  263. to stop

  264. its spread

  265. by not allowing

  266. any large group gatherings

  267. nationwide.

  268. Churches

  269. and Christians

  270. have not been

  271. singled out.

  272. We,

  273. as individual Christians,

  274. as a church,

  275. we have not been targeted

  276. because of who we are

  277. or what we believe.

  278. Think about it.

  279. Christians

  280. have not been forbidden

  281. from practicing

  282. their faith.

  283. President Trump

  284. has issued

  285. at least

  286. two

  287. national days

  288. of prayer,

  289. you might say.

  290. Governor

  291. McMaster

  292. has begun

  293. most of his

  294. updates,

  295. his news conferences

  296. with a chaplain

  297. leading in prayer

  298. and many times

  299. ending his prayer

  300. in Jesus' name.

  301. That's something

  302. to be thankful for.

  303. Churches

  304. have not been forbidden

  305. to preach the gospel.

  306. To the contrary,

  307. churches have been

  308. encouraged

  309. by government leaders,

  310. government

  311. McMaster,

  312. President Trump

  313. and others.

  314. We have been

  315. encouraged

  316. to preach

  317. and teach,

  318. have your worship

  319. services online.

  320. WIFF.

  321. They posted

  322. on their website

  323. for several weeks

  324. a long list

  325. of churches

  326. and their websites

  327. where people

  328. could go

  329. and watch

  330. a worship service

  331. on Sunday

  332. or any other day.

  333. That was commendable

  334. of WIFF.

  335. WIFF.

  336. Think about this.

  337. Local

  338. church

  339. Bible teaching,

  340. local church

  341. preaching

  342. has been more

  343. widely available

  344. through the internet

  345. during this crisis

  346. than ever before.

  347. That's something

  348. that we need

  349. to just

  350. thank God for

  351. and thank

  352. the government

  353. leaders that we have

  354. who have done this.

  355. Now,

  356. I am well aware

  357. that there are

  358. liberal Democrat

  359. governors and mayors

  360. around this country

  361. that have done

  362. their best

  363. to prevent

  364. churches

  365. from doing

  366. what they lawfully

  367. should have done

  368. like having

  369. drive-in services.

  370. The liberal

  371. Democrat

  372. governor of Illinois

  373. right now

  374. is not allowing

  375. churches

  376. to reopen

  377. unless they

  378. limit the size

  379. of their crowd

  380. to 50

  381. or less.

  382. I'm sure

  383. there are

  384. other mayors

  385. and leaders

  386. doing something

  387. similar

  388. right now.

  389. But so far,

  390. let's be honest,

  391. so far,

  392. these actions

  393. have been

  394. the exception,

  395. not the rule.

  396. And President Trump's

  397. Justice Department,

  398. under the leadership

  399. of Attorney General Barr,

  400. they have come

  401. to the defense

  402. of these churches.

  403. They have stepped

  404. up and said,

  405. this is not right,

  406. this is not going

  407. to be allowed.

  408. They have defended

  409. our First Amendment

  410. rights

  411. to freely exercise

  412. our faith.

  413. Those are leaders

  414. that we need

  415. to commend,

  416. we need to call

  417. attention to,

  418. we need to support,

  419. we need to pray for

  420. and thank God for.

  421. We must always

  422. be on guard

  423. against government

  424. overreach.

  425. We must always

  426. be on guard

  427. against the government

  428. intrusion led by

  429. today's liberal

  430. and socialist

  431. Democrats

  432. in Congress

  433. and liberal

  434. activist

  435. judges.

  436. Always,

  437. we've got to guard

  438. against this.

  439. But in dealing

  440. with this

  441. pandemic,

  442. we as a church,

  443. along with

  444. thousands of churches

  445. across the country,

  446. we have done

  447. our duty

  448. by complying

  449. with our government's

  450. right call

  451. to stop

  452. all large group

  453. gatherings

  454. for a time

  455. to try to stop

  456. the spread

  457. of this deadly

  458. virus.

  459. Now that states

  460. are beginning

  461. to ease

  462. restrictions

  463. and allow

  464. larger groups

  465. to meet,

  466. businesses

  467. to open,

  468. it's right

  469. for churches

  470. to be among

  471. the first

  472. to resume.

  473. But churches,

  474. we must be

  475. responsible.

  476. We must do

  477. this as safely

  478. and as wisely

  479. as we can.

  480. Now we have

  481. a plan here

  482. at Pickens

  483. for how we're

  484. going to resume.

  485. A lot of the

  486. details have been

  487. explained in a letter

  488. that went out

  489. to the church

  490. this week

  491. from Gil Stewart

  492. and me.

  493. There's information

  494. in this week

  495. and last week's

  496. newsletter.

  497. I want to encourage

  498. you to read

  499. this information.

  500. Be prepared

  501. to come

  502. next Sunday.

  503. Let's do church

  504. together

  505. in a safe way,

  506. in an orderly way,

  507. but in a good way

  508. that helps us

  509. worship the Lord.

  510. Now there's

  511. a third reason

  512. that I want

  513. to quickly

  514. point out

  515. that explains

  516. why we haven't

  517. met for public

  518. worship for nine

  519. weeks.

  520. Look at this.

  521. We have shown

  522. wisdom by stopping

  523. our large group

  524. gatherings.

  525. You know,

  526. some people

  527. refer to the

  528. book of Proverbs

  529. as a manual

  530. on wisdom

  531. and it certainly

  532. is.

  533. Among the things

  534. that it emphasizes

  535. about wisdom,

  536. it emphasizes the

  537. importance of

  538. listening to people

  539. who are wise

  540. and knowledgeable.

  541. For an example,

  542. look at this

  543. from Proverbs 23.

  544. Apply your heart

  545. to instruction

  546. and your ear

  547. to words of

  548. knowledge.

  549. You know,

  550. there's a lot

  551. that scientists

  552. and healthcare

  553. professionals do

  554. not know

  555. about the

  556. coronavirus.

  557. But there are

  558. things they do

  559. know and we

  560. need to listen

  561. to them about

  562. those things.

  563. They know that

  564. the coronavirus

  565. is highly

  566. contagious

  567. and that it

  568. is potentially

  569. fatal to anyone

  570. but especially

  571. senior adults

  572. and people

  573. with underlying

  574. health problems.

  575. They know

  576. that avoiding

  577. large group

  578. gatherings

  579. and practicing

  580. social distancing

  581. is an effective

  582. way to deal

  583. with it,

  584. to prevent

  585. it spread.

  586. therefore,

  587. I have no

  588. doubt

  589. that we have

  590. acted wisely

  591. in not having

  592. public services

  593. over these past

  594. few weeks,

  595. not having

  596. large group

  597. gatherings

  598. along with

  599. everyone else

  600. in our country.

  601. It's not what

  602. we wanted to do

  603. but it was a

  604. wise thing

  605. to do.

  606. You know,

  607. we have joined

  608. with other

  609. churches

  610. voluntarily

  611. throughout our

  612. country

  613. to comply

  614. with our

  615. government

  616. and health

  617. care leaders

  618. directives

  619. in order to

  620. try to protect

  621. lives,

  622. in order to

  623. try to save

  624. lives.

  625. We've done that

  626. for the benefit

  627. of our church

  628. family and those

  629. we come in

  630. contact with

  631. outside this

  632. building.

  633. But more

  634. than that,

  635. we have sought

  636. to fulfill

  637. our God-given

  638. responsibility

  639. to love our

  640. neighbor as

  641. ourself,

  642. to fulfill

  643. our Christian

  644. duty of

  645. obeying proper

  646. governmental

  647. authority

  648. and we have

  649. acted wisely

  650. to the best

  651. of our ability.

  652. Now,

  653. the coronavirus

  654. is still a

  655. serious threat

  656. but we can't

  657. stop living

  658. life

  659. because it's

  660. present.

  661. Some liberals

  662. and socialists

  663. appear not to

  664. even care about

  665. destroying our

  666. economy and

  667. our nation.

  668. But wise

  669. leaders do

  670. care and

  671. they are

  672. leading us

  673. to start

  674. rebuilding

  675. and reopening

  676. and for

  677. churches to

  678. regather.

  679. Wise leaders

  680. are telling us

  681. we've got to

  682. be very,

  683. very careful.

  684. We've got to

  685. do this

  686. slowly.

  687. We've got to

  688. do this in

  689. steps.

  690. We've got to

  691. protect lives

  692. as we

  693. reopen the

  694. country.

  695. We're going

  696. to do our

  697. best as we

  698. regather next

  699. Sunday morning

  700. to be as

  701. careful and as

  702. safe as we

  703. possibly can.

  704. But I want to

  705. make this clear.

  706. we cannot

  707. provide a

  708. germ-free

  709. environment.

  710. It will not

  711. be a germ-free

  712. building when

  713. you come on

  714. Sunday.

  715. Therefore,

  716. if you are in

  717. the at-risk

  718. group for

  719. developing

  720. serious

  721. complications

  722. from the

  723. coronavirus,

  724. I want to

  725. encourage you to

  726. prayerfully and

  727. carefully evaluate

  728. whether or not

  729. you should come

  730. back to church

  731. right now.

  732. I think you

  733. ought to be

  734. very careful

  735. about going

  736. out in public

  737. and just going

  738. about your life

  739. as you used to

  740. right now.

  741. Know this for

  742. sure.

  743. You will not be

  744. sinning against

  745. God if you wait

  746. a while longer

  747. to come back to

  748. church.

  749. You will not be

  750. doing anything

  751. wrong or cowardly

  752. if you don't just

  753. get out and about

  754. and pretend that

  755. all is well.

  756. But for all who

  757. are planning to

  758. come, please

  759. practice social

  760. distancing and

  761. follow directions

  762. next Sunday.

  763. We're trying to

  764. make our building

  765. as safe as

  766. possible for

  767. all of us.

  768. But once we

  769. get here next

  770. Sunday, once we

  771. get here and

  772. get focused

  773. together, let's

  774. forget about the

  775. coronavirus, the

  776. pandemic and all

  777. this.

  778. Let's worship the

  779. Lord wholeheartedly

  780. together as the

  781. Pickens First

  782. Baptist family.

  783. I'm looking

  784. forward to it.

  785. I'm looking

  786. forward to seeing

  787. you.

  788. I hope if it's

  789. wise for you to

  790. get out, I hope

  791. to see you next

  792. Sunday morning,

  793. either at 8,

  794. 9, 30 or 11 as

  795. we join together

  796. to worship and

  797. praise our great

  798. God.

  799. Let's pray together

  800. now.

  801. Father,

  802. Father, we pray

  803. that as we come

  804. together next

  805. Sunday morning,

  806. that you will help

  807. us to truly

  808. enjoy being in your

  809. presence, being with

  810. one another, and

  811. being the people of

  812. God at worship.

  813. Lord, we pray that

  814. you will keep us

  815. safe.

  816. We pray, Father,

  817. that you will

  818. enable us to act

  819. wisely and

  820. responsibly.

  821. We pray that for

  822. all churches.

  823. And Lord, we pray

  824. that throughout our

  825. country, as more and

  826. more businesses

  827. open, that you'll

  828. keep us safe.

  829. We pray, Father,

  830. that we will not

  831. see a big jump in

  832. the number of

  833. coronavirus cases.

  834. Lord, bring it to

  835. an end, we pray.

  836. And help us to

  837. restart our country.

  838. Help us to reopen

  839. businesses.

  840. And help us,

  841. Father, to

  842. regather as your

  843. people.

  844. And help us,

  845. Father, to live as

  846. your people.

  847. Loving you,

  848. loving others,

  849. in the best

  850. possible way.

  851. And it's in Jesus'

  852. name we pray.

  853. Amen.
