  1. Thank you.

  2. What's your greatest fear?

  3. What is the most frightening thought that's ever crossed your mind?

  4. You know, I'd never thought of that kind of question until recently.

  5. Everybody has certain things they're afraid of.

  6. Everybody deals with certain kinds of fears.

  7. What's your greatest fear?

  8. Well, I read something that helped me to know how to answer that question.

  9. D.A. Carson, the New Testament scholar, made this statement.

  10. It always makes me fearful to remember that God knows my thoughts.

  11. Hebrews 4.13 reminds us,

  12. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight.

  13. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

  14. Now, I want you to look at what that verse is saying.

  15. Think about it.

  16. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight.

  17. Some translations make that more personal and say no creature is hidden from God's sight.

  18. I think this verse reveals what should be, at least for most people, our greatest fear.

  19. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.

  20. God knows everything about us.

  21. Every single thing about us, He knows.

  22. And that includes our thoughts, our desires.

  23. Now, we all live with people.

  24. Family members, close friends, they know a lot about us.

  25. But no one but God really knows what's going on up here and here.

  26. And one day, we're going to have to stand before God and give an account of everything about our lives.

  27. Not just what we've done, but what we've said.

  28. What we've thought.

  29. D.A. Carson went on to point out that King David understood this about God,

  30. which led him to write this after his sin with Bathsheba.

  31. It's like a prayer from Psalm 139.

  32. He writes,

  33. Carson explains this verse clearly.

  34. Now, look at this.

  35. He concludes,

  36. If you think holy thoughts, you'll be holy.

  37. If you think garbage, you'll be garbage.

  38. Carson is right in saying that from God's perspective,

  39. the real measure of an individual lies in what they think.

  40. That's why David wanted to be accountable to God for what he thought.

  41. That's why he said, search me, O God, and know my heart.

  42. Test me and know my anxious thoughts.

  43. David wanted to know, if my thinking is not right, show me, Lord.

  44. Don't let me have the wrong kinds of thoughts and desires because I'll act on it.

  45. What I think will come out in what I say and in what I do.

  46. And so David prayed, search me, O God, and know my heart.

  47. Test me and know my anxious thoughts with the idea, make it known to me

  48. so that I can confess sinful thoughts,

  49. change unhealthy thoughts before I act on it.

  50. Jesus clearly taught that the source of our sinful behavior is our sinful thinking,

  51. our sinful thoughts and desires.

  52. Look at these verses.

  53. From the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said this,

  54. You have heard that it was said to those of old,

  55. You shall not murder.

  56. And whoever murders will be liable to judgment.

  57. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother

  58. will be liable to judgment.

  59. He's talking about murder begins in the heart, in the mind, with anger.

  60. He goes on to say,

  61. You have heard that it was said you should not commit adultery.

  62. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent

  63. has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  64. Adultery begins in the heart, in the mind, in fantasies.

  65. And then look at one more.

  66. We've looked at this in recent times,

  67. but I want to just look at this as a reminder.

  68. Jesus said this,

  69. What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart,

  70. and this defiles a person.

  71. For out of the heart come evil thoughts,

  72. murder, adultery, sexual immorality,

  73. theft, false witness, slander.

  74. Now I want you to note, think about these verses.

  75. Jesus doesn't really make a distinction

  76. between our thoughts and our desires.

  77. It's all a part of what's inside us.

  78. Sometimes we think about it in terms of these thoughts,

  79. these desires, these attitudes, these feelings.

  80. It's all what's inside.

  81. And that's where whatever comes out begins.

  82. Now, in the last two messages I preached,

  83. I used the title, Thinking Biblically.

  84. The first one was about governmental authority

  85. with a special emphasis on law enforcement men and women

  86. being the ones who enforce the laws.

  87. They're the agents of governmental authority.

  88. And then thinking biblically about race.

  89. My goal was for us to look at those two current hot-button issues

  90. from a biblical perspective

  91. instead of just a personal feeling perspective

  92. or even our culture's perspective.

  93. As Christians, it's important that we learn to think biblically.

  94. Some people in describing this concept

  95. talk about developing a Christian worldview

  96. or developing a biblical worldview.

  97. The idea is we as Christians, we need to learn to look at life,

  98. all of life, through the lens of Scripture.

  99. We need to learn to look at life,

  100. what's going on around about us,

  101. and be able to discern truth and error,

  102. right and wrong, good and bad,

  103. as we'll see in the passage in a moment,

  104. what is lovely, what's not.

  105. Today, I want us to step back a little bit

  106. and look at what it means to think biblically in general.

  107. And one of the best places to start

  108. is found in Philippians chapter 4, verse 8.

    Philippians 4:8

  109. It's going to be on the screen.

  110. A lot of you know this because Philippians chapter 4

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  111. is a lot of people's favorite chapter in the Bible.

  112. But let's look at it together.

  113. Finally, brothers, whatever is true,

  114. whatever is honorable,

  115. whatever is just,

  116. whatever is pure,

  117. whatever is lovely,

  118. whatever is commendable,

  119. if there is any excellence,

  120. if there is anything worthy of praise,

  121. think about these things.

  122. Now, before we get into that,

  123. I think it's interesting how several commentators

  124. point out that these qualities,

  125. look at it on the screen there,

  126. you know, whatever is true,

  127. honorable, just, pure,

  128. these kind of qualities.

  129. They're not uniquely Christian virtues.

  130. In the Greek world,

  131. here in Philippi,

  132. Macedonia, where Paul was writing,

  133. as these people had this read to them,

  134. Paul's letter read to them,

  135. they were familiar with these concepts

  136. being admirable,

  137. what a person,

  138. a right, good person,

  139. would seek to,

  140. how they would seek to live.

  141. I want you to look at how Frank Thielman

  142. describes how these were common,

  143. desirable qualities in the ancient world.

  144. He says,

  145. the list of virtues that Paul asked the Philippians

  146. to think about

  147. is not a distinctively Christian list

  148. and could have been embraced

  149. by many right-thinking people in ancient times.

  150. It also assumes that the pagan world

  151. had some notion of good and bad,

  152. right and wrong,

  153. duty and irresponsibility,

  154. beauty and ugliness,

  155. honor and shame.

  156. He says elsewhere,

  157. Paul speaks of Gentiles

  158. who have the requirements of God's law

  159. written on their hearts

  160. and says that occasionally

  161. they actually do these things.

  162. That's in Romans 2.

  163. What this is describing is that

  164. all human beings

  165. are created in God's image.

  166. And so all people,

  167. unbelievers

  168. of all stripes,

  169. all people have a sense of conscience,

  170. a sense of what's right and wrong,

  171. what's good and bad.

  172. Now everybody's conscience is not the same.

  173. Some people have a very tender conscience.

  174. They are easily convicted of something being,

  175. they have a lot of guilt maybe,

  176. easily it comes.

  177. Some people have a more calloused conscience.

  178. And our conscience changes over time.

  179. Some people become harder.

  180. Some people become softer.

  181. As Christians,

  182. the Holy Spirit lives within us.

  183. And the Holy Spirit

  184. enlightens our conscience.

  185. And so we as Christians,

  186. we should have a conscience

  187. that is sensitive to the Holy Spirit

  188. and we are from within.

  189. We have a desire to do what

  190. the Bible would say is what is right,

  191. what is good.

  192. And not do what would be not right,

  193. what would be evil.

  194. We should be people who desire

  195. to speak the truth,

  196. to be truthful,

  197. not to lie,

  198. not to be easily led astray

  199. by that which is not true.

  200. But more often than not,

  201. people violate their own conscience.

  202. Christians and unbelievers

  203. by consciously choosing wrong over right.

  204. That's what sin is.

  205. We violate our conscience,

  206. our God-given sense of right and wrong.

  207. We violate the clear teachings of Scripture.

  208. We break God's laws.

  209. That's the effect that sin has on us.

  210. And Paul explains that in detail

  211. in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:18

  212. verse 18,

  213. through chapter 3,

  214. verse 20,

  215. a long, lengthy explanation

  216. about what sin does

  217. in a person's life.

  218. Now,

  219. Paul understood how powerful

  220. sin affects our thinking.

  221. It powerfully impacts

  222. how we think.

  223. He also knew that the key

  224. to changing the way that we think,

  225. or changing the way that we live,

  226. is to change the way we think.

  227. If you want to change some things

  228. about your life,

  229. generally speaking,

  230. is first of all,

  231. you've got to change your attitude,

  232. your thought process.

  233. You've got to change the way you think

  234. in order to change the way that you live.

  235. Now,

  236. that's why he calls us to think rightly,

  237. or think biblically,

  238. in verse 8.

  239. So let's look at now

  240. what this means.

  241. What does it mean

  242. to think biblically?

  243. Well,

  244. anytime we look at a question like this,

  245. I think it's important

  246. to answer, first of all,

  247. what it does not mean.

  248. Thinking biblically

  249. does not mean that you deny reality.

  250. I'm sure there's some people

  251. in this room,

  252. you thought,

  253. as we read through that verse,

  254. verse 8 there,

  255. finally, brothers,

  256. whatever's true,

  257. honorable,

  258. just,

  259. pure,

  260. lovely,

  261. think about these things.

  262. And I'm sure some people said,

  263. how in the world can you do that

  264. and live in the world

  265. we live in today?

  266. This world we live in today

  267. is anything but true

  268. and honorable

  269. and lovely

  270. and pure

  271. and all of that.

  272. So what you're saying is

  273. to think this way,

  274. you've just sort of got to

  275. close your eyes

  276. what's going on around about you.

  277. No.

  278. Paul would never say that.

  279. Jesus never taught

  280. anything like that.

  281. As Christians,

  282. we are never to pretend

  283. that all is right

  284. with the world.

  285. We're not supposed

  286. to close our eyes

  287. to the cold,

  288. harsh realities of life.

  289. That's just a part of

  290. what is

  291. the world we live in.

  292. D.A. Carson

  293. explains this well.

  294. Look at this

  295. in writing about

  296. verse 8.

  297. This is not

  298. some escapist

  299. demand

  300. to avoid

  301. the harsh realities

  302. of our fallen world.

  303. The sad fact is

  304. that many people

  305. dwell on dirt

  306. without grasping

  307. that it's dirt.

  308. The wise Christian

  309. will see plenty

  310. of dirt

  311. in the world

  312. but will recognize

  313. it as dirt

  314. precisely because

  315. everything that is clean

  316. has captured

  317. his or her mind.

  318. There is much

  319. around about us

  320. that is opposite

  321. of these virtues

  322. Paul lists.

  323. There's a lot

  324. around about us

  325. you see

  326. in people's lives.

  327. You see

  328. in the media

  329. things that are untrue

  330. that are dishonorable

  331. that are unfair

  332. that are filthy

  333. that are ugly.

  334. That's what Carson

  335. is calling dirt.

  336. And the problem

  337. is that too many

  338. of us as Christians

  339. don't recognize

  340. the dirt.

  341. Or even worse

  342. we don't mind

  343. the dirt.

  344. We accept it.

  345. we embrace it.

  346. We

  347. live it.

  348. What we need

  349. to do

  350. in order to learn

  351. to think biblically

  352. we need to recognize

  353. the dirt around

  354. about us

  355. in this world

  356. wherever it is

  357. in whomever

  358. it's in.

  359. We need to call

  360. it what it is.

  361. If we can

  362. clean it up

  363. we have that kind

  364. of power

  365. influence

  366. we need to get

  367. involved

  368. and try to

  369. clean it up.

  370. If we can't

  371. we need to avoid

  372. what we can avoid.

  373. We don't need

  374. to dirty ourselves

  375. with the world's dirt.

  376. That's

  377. I want you to understand.

  378. Paul is saying

  379. when he talks about

  380. think about what's true

  381. and lovely and honorable.

  382. He doesn't mean

  383. pretend that everything's good.

  384. He does not say

  385. and be naive.

  386. But what does he mean?

  387. Well thinking biblically

  388. means that we need

  389. to think

  390. intentionally

  391. about the right

  392. kinds of things.

  393. We need to learn

  394. to think rightly

  395. think biblically

  396. and what he's doing

  397. here is listing

  398. several ways

  399. that we actually

  400. do that

  401. in this list.

  402. Let's start looking

  403. at it today

  404. and we'll come back

  405. and finish it next week.

  406. Number one

  407. think about

  408. whatever is true.

  409. Whatever is true.

  410. We need to think

  411. that way.

  412. Now broadly speaking

  413. truth is that

  414. which corresponds

  415. to reality.

  416. Kent Hughes

  417. describes it like this.

  418. Everything that is true

  419. is from God

  420. because all truth

  421. is God's truth.

  422. All things

  423. that are true

  424. that's God's truth.

  425. Wherever is true

  426. and right

  427. wherever you find it

  428. in this world

  429. that is of God.

  430. Q's goes on to say

  431. this mind seeks

  432. whatever is true

  433. in every avenue

  434. of life

  435. from faith

  436. to science

  437. to relationships

  438. to public life

  439. to business.

  440. Paul is telling us

  441. to think

  442. whatever is true.

  443. Think that way

  444. in every realm of life

  445. wherever you see it

  446. even a pagan

  447. even in a place

  448. you didn't think

  449. you'd see it

  450. that which is true

  451. that which corresponds

  452. to reality

  453. learn from it.

  454. Learn from him

  455. or her.

  456. That's in the

  457. general sense.

  458. In this general sense

  459. we're to think

  460. in terms of

  461. what's real

  462. what's accurate

  463. what's rational

  464. what

  465. is proven

  466. in any area

  467. of life.

  468. We're to do that

  469. instead of

  470. just believe

  471. everything you read

  472. on the internet

  473. or believe

  474. fall

  475. victim to

  476. every conspiracy

  477. theory out there

  478. about everything

  479. that's happening

  480. in the world today.

  481. We need to be

  482. discerning people

  483. part of looking

  484. for what the truth

  485. is learning

  486. to be wise

  487. but more

  488. specifically

  489. whatever is true

  490. refers to

  491. whatever is ethical

  492. whatever is truthful

  493. whatever is

  494. dependable

  495. as opposed

  496. to what is

  497. deceptive

  498. what is phony

  499. what is

  500. a lie.

  501. The reason

  502. that I preached

  503. on

  504. government authority

  505. law enforcement

  506. officers

  507. carrying out

  508. government authority

  509. and race

  510. in my last

  511. two sermons

  512. is to point out

  513. a lot of the

  514. untruthful

  515. things

  516. that are being

  517. said in

  518. mainstream media

  519. and also

  520. to describe

  521. what is true

  522. about governmental

  523. authority

  524. about race

  525. according to

  526. scripture.

  527. Now since I

  528. preached those

  529. two sermons

  530. I have found

  531. an article

  532. of an interview

  533. with Ed Young

  534. he is pastor

  535. of Fellowship

  536. Church in Texas

  537. described as

  538. one of North

  539. America's

  540. largest churches

  541. they even have

  542. satellite campuses

  543. in other states

  544. not just in

  545. the Fort Worth

  546. Dallas area.

  547. In the interview

  548. Ed Young

  549. describes

  550. how some

  551. Christian leaders

  552. have abandoned

  553. the truth

  554. about race.

  555. Now listen

  556. Ed Young

  557. he has a father

  558. who is pastor

  559. of Second Baptist

  560. Church of Houston

  561. Edwin Young

  562. some of you

  563. may have heard

  564. of him

  565. he is a former

  566. pastor in

  567. Columbia

  568. in Taylor

  569. South Carolina

  570. he has some

  571. South Carolina

  572. roots

  573. well this is

  574. Ed Young

  575. Edwin's

  576. son

  577. I will have

  578. sort of a

  579. lengthy quote

  580. here

  581. I do not

  582. agree with

  583. every word

  584. that he says

  585. but I think

  586. he makes

  587. a very powerful

  588. statement

  589. someone in

  590. his position

  591. that we need

  592. to hear

  593. today.

  594. look at this

  595. woke Christian

  596. leaders and

  597. pastors today

  598. are jumping

  599. on the hype

  600. train of what

  601. culture is

  602. currently

  603. applauding

  604. but they don't

  605. really look at

  606. what the hype

  607. train is

  608. connected to

  609. for example

  610. many of the

  611. things culture

  612. applauds are

  613. connected to

  614. relativism

  615. abortion

  616. transgenderism

  617. the breakup of

  618. the nuclear

  619. family.

  620. one example

  621. of the hype

  622. train

  623. many Christians

  624. have been

  625. far too eager

  626. to jump on

  627. in recent

  628. months

  629. is the

  630. promotion of

  631. the Black

  632. Lives Matter

  633. organization.

  634. I wholeheartedly

  635. agree with the

  636. phrase Black

  637. Lives Matter

  638. I believe in it

  639. and the church

  640. should champion

  641. it.

  642. We should

  643. stand up for

  644. equality and

  645. justice.

  646. I believe we

  647. need to lead

  648. out but I

  649. can't support

  650. or agree with

  651. the core beliefs

  652. of the organization

  653. Black Lives Matter

  654. matter.

  655. It is tied to

  656. abortion,

  657. homosexuality,

  658. transgenderism and

  659. the breakup of

  660. the nuclear family

  661. just to name a

  662. few.

  663. I want to stop

  664. the quote.

  665. The Black Lives

  666. Matter organization

  667. does not truly

  668. believe that all

  669. black lives

  670. matter.

  671. They do not

  672. believe that the

  673. lives of black

  674. law enforcement

  675. officers matter.

  676. in the riots

  677. and looting that

  678. has taken place

  679. since Memorial

  680. Day, there have

  681. been at least

  682. two black law

  683. enforcement officers

  684. or former

  685. officers who

  686. were killed by

  687. the rioters, by

  688. the anarchists.

  689. police officers

  690. and the Black

  691. Lives Matter

  692. organization has

  693. said nothing

  694. about the

  695. murder of

  696. these two black

  697. officers.

  698. There have been

  699. black businessmen.

  700. One received a lot

  701. of national attention,

  702. a former fireman

  703. who scraped

  704. together everything

  705. he had, had his

  706. own business.

  707. And in one of the

  708. riots, it was

  709. burned to the

  710. ground.

  711. There was another

  712. city in which a

  713. black business owner

  714. wrote on the

  715. window of his

  716. business.

  717. This is a black

  718. owned business.

  719. They broke out the

  720. windows of his

  721. business.

  722. The Black Lives

  723. Matter organization

  724. does not care about

  725. all black lives.

  726. They do not care

  727. about black

  728. conservatives.

  729. They do not care

  730. about the lives of

  731. black Bible-believing

  732. Christians.

  733. And I say that and

  734. can back that because

  735. of their silence.

  736. when black

  737. policemen are

  738. killed, black

  739. business owners lose

  740. everything they have

  741. and their very

  742. statements of who

  743. they are and what

  744. they are deny

  745. basic Christian

  746. values as Ed Young

  747. pointed out just a

  748. moment ago in that

  749. quote.

  750. I want to continue

  751. with Young's quote

  752. now.

  753. Racism is an obvious

  754. issue that must always

  755. be addressed.

  756. We must call it out

  757. and point people to

  758. the answers found in

  759. the person of Jesus

  760. Christ.

  761. I'm all for supporting

  762. legislation that

  763. pushes the ball of

  764. equality down the

  765. field.

  766. But real change is

  767. only going to happen

  768. when we have a heart

  769. transformation.

  770. Too many leaders are

  771. fearful to stand.

  772. Where is the

  773. boldness?

  774. Both sides of the

  775. aisle have dropped

  776. the ball.

  777. We must have open

  778. conversations, face our

  779. fears, and find

  780. solutions that work.

  781. I think that we have

  782. more of a systemic sin

  783. problem in our world

  784. than a skin problem.

  785. Most people I know

  786. aren't racist.

  787. I want to stop there

  788. and I want to make that

  789. statement as well.

  790. Most people I know in

  791. this world are not

  792. racist.

  793. But according to the

  794. mainstream media,

  795. everybody who is white

  796. is a racist in this

  797. country today, it

  798. seems.

  799. Ed Young, most people

  800. I know are not

  801. racist.

  802. Some are, and I know

  803. some who are as well,

  804. and they're wrong.

  805. He says, some are,

  806. yes.

  807. And I believe there's a

  808. skin problem.

  809. I just don't believe it's

  810. systemically the core

  811. issue.

  812. The real issue is sin,

  813. not skin.

  814. That's the root issue.

  815. But we're too fearful to

  816. say that because we could

  817. be misunderstood and

  818. maligned.

  819. So what he's saying is that

  820. we as Christians, especially

  821. too many Christian leaders,

  822. they're so afraid of being

  823. misunderstood and maligned,

  824. that they keep their

  825. mouth closed, and by

  826. their silence agree to

  827. the lies and half-truths

  828. that's being promoted by

  829. the mainstream media day

  830. after day after day.

  831. We need to learn to think

  832. about what is true and

  833. about every issue in life,

  834. regardless of what this

  835. cultural hype train, and

  836. those on it, rather, are

  837. saying.

  838. But I want to be real

  839. clear.

  840. Don't look for the

  841. mainstream media in this

  842. country today to find the

  843. truth.

  844. They don't know it.

  845. The ones who do are not

  846. allowed to speak.

  847. They're fired.

  848. If you're not liberal

  849. enough, you can't work for

  850. mainstream media today.

  851. You'll be terminated.

  852. It's the mainstream media

  853. liberal, socialists, who

  854. are driving today's

  855. cultural hype train.

  856. And they're going to run it

  857. into the ground.

  858. Eventually, they're going to

  859. wreck our country if

  860. they're not stopped.

  861. And the only way to be

  862. stopped is to combat their

  863. lies with the truth.

  864. combat their half-truths with

  865. the full truth.

  866. We're going to come back

  867. next week and look at the

  868. rest of Paul's list of

  869. virtues here.

  870. But I want to conclude

  871. today by looking at where

  872. we must look first to find

  873. the truth.

  874. So the second question

  875. today, how do we develop the

  876. habit of thinking biblically?

  877. Well, the best way to learn to

  878. think truthfully is through

  879. consistent Bible reading and

  880. study.

  881. I want to be clear.

  882. This is not the only way.

  883. Paul said, look again in

  884. verse 8, whatever is true, we

  885. can find truth in many realms of

  886. life.

  887. But the first, the best source of

  888. truth, the infallible source of

  889. truth is the Word of God.

  890. We need to understand it is

  891. impossible for us to get rid of

  892. the deception, lies, and garbage

  893. that comes into our minds without

  894. replacing it with an entirely

  895. different way of thinking.

  896. And I'm talking about biblical truth

  897. is a different way of thinking.

  898. You know, throughout Israel's

  899. history, as you read through the

  900. Old Testament, it seems that

  901. everything, whenever something new

  902. about to take place, a new leader

  903. was installed, there was a great

  904. emphasis for that leader to get

  905. prepared to lead the people into

  906. whatever the new endeavor was going

  907. to be by saturating his mind with

  908. the Word of God.

  909. One of the best examples of that is

  910. found in the first chapter of

  911. Joshua.

  912. Joshua succeeded Moses as the leader

  913. of the nation of Israel.

  914. And he was going to lead the people of

  915. Israel into the promised land.

  916. Here's one verse that emphasizes what

  917. I'm talking about.

  918. God said this to Joshua,

  919. This book of the law shall not depart

  920. from your mouth, but you shall

  921. meditate on it day and night, so that

  922. you may be careful to do according to

  923. all that is written in it.

  924. For then you will make your way

  925. prosperous, and then you will have

  926. good success.

  927. That was God's way of saying, Joshua,

  928. If you want to have success, you've got

  929. to do things my way, according to my

  930. plan.

  931. You know, we live in a day where

  932. everyone is busy.

  933. Everyone is busy.

  934. And most people's minds are filled with

  935. a lot of clutter.

  936. A lot of things that don't matter.

  937. A lot of things could be just called

  938. junk.

  939. Kent Hughes describes this as our

  940. greatest danger today.

  941. Look at this.

  942. The greatest danger in our busy,

  943. increasingly post-literate world

  944. is that we make little or no effort

  945. to think God's thoughts after Him.

  946. To hide His word in our hearts

  947. so that we may not sin against Him.

  948. That comes from Psalm 119.11.

  949. We cannot be profoundly influenced

  950. by that which we do not know.

  951. I said earlier, the Spirit of God

  952. lives in every Christian.

  953. He influences us according to the

  954. truth of God's word.

  955. But we're going to miss out on some

  956. of His influence if we don't know

  957. the truth of God's word.

  958. Jesus emphasized this.

  959. You know, before Jesus, on the night

  960. He was arrested, He was going to be

  961. crucified the next day.

  962. Jesus prayed for His people.

  963. Here's an example of, or here's part

  964. of His prayer.

  965. It's in John 17.

  966. Jesus prayed for our spiritual growth,

  967. our sanctification.

  968. He prayed like this.

  969. Sanctify them by the truth.

  970. Your word is truth.

  971. There's no way in the world we can

  972. be growing Christians apart from

  973. regularly reading and studying

  974. God's word.

  975. There's no way we're going to be

  976. sanctified, as Jesus said,

  977. apart from the truth of God's word

  978. saturating our minds.

  979. You know, Paul said in Romans 12, too,

  980. that the only way we can avoid

  981. conforming to the mindset of this world

  982. is by renewing our minds.

  983. And what he was talking about

  984. was learning to think

  985. about that which is true.

  986. Learning to think biblically.

  987. Let's wrap it up.

  988. I want you to think with me now.

  989. I've got some questions.

  990. How well are you dealing with

  991. the deception of this world?

  992. Do you read, watch,

  993. do you take in the information,

  994. the news that comes from this world

  995. in a discerning way?

  996. Do you try to sift through

  997. what you hear, see, read?

  998. Try to discover that which is true,

  999. that which is obviously not,

1000. that which is very biased.

1001. How well are you dealing

1002. with the deception of this world?

  1003. Number two,

1004. do you need to make some changes

1005. in the way that you think?

1006. Do you need to make some changes

1007. in the things you are exposing

1008. your mind and heart to?

  1009. Things you're taking in.

1010. Because what you're taking in

  1011. affects what you think,

  1012. how you feel,

1013. and it comes out in how you speak

  1014. and how you live.

1015. Do you, as a Christian,

1016. maybe need to make a new commitment

1017. to daily read God's Word?

  1018. I mean, read it

1019. in order to get into your mind

1020. who God is, how He is,

  1021. what His will is,

  1022. what pleases Him,

  1023. what doesn't please Him,

  1024. that kind of thing.

1025. You need to make a commitment

1026. to daily read His Word

  1027. and regularly study it.

  1028. Now, for an example,

  1029. we're studying God's Word together

  1030. here on Sunday mornings.

1031. Eventually, we'll start back Sunday school

1032. and we'll do it there too.

1033. There is more good, solid,

1034. biblical teaching available online today

1035. than any time in the world in history.

1036. Our church subscribes to Right Now Media,

  1037. which gives us access

1038. to all kinds of good, solid Bible teaching.

1039. You need to take advantage of that

1040. more than you are now

1041. to help you to think more biblically.

1042. You know, that's the first

1043. and best source of truth available to us.

1044. I want to encourage you

1045. to set a time and place

1046. that you're going to read God's Word every day

1047. if you're not already doing that.

1048. Make an appointment with God

1049. and ask God to help you

1050. not just to read it,

1051. not just to read the words,

1052. but to think about it,

  1053. to believe it.

1054. Ask God to help you to understand it.

1055. Ask God to help you

1056. to put it into practice,

  1057. to teach it even

1058. and model it to people around you,

1059. your friends, your family members.

  1060. And when I say

1061. make an appointment with God

  1062. and read His Word,

1063. do what you have time to do.

1064. I want to encourage you

1065. to start in the New Testament.

1066. Start in the New Testament.

1067. Whether it's morning, noon, or night,

1068. make it a habit of reading

  1069. a paragraph, a chapter,

1070. whatever you have time to do

  1071. with a prayer.

  1072. God, teach me.

  1073. Help me to understand.

1074. Help me to do it.

1075. Help me to model it.

  1076. We need, as Christians,

1077. more than any other time in history,

  1078. to learn to think.

1079. A lot of you, your job,

  1080. your schoolwork requires you

  1081. to truly think.

  1082. Put yourself into it.

1083. But when it comes to

  1084. living out your faith,

  1085. reading God's Word,

  1086. you're a dummy.

  1087. Because you ignore it.

1088. Or because you skim it.

1089. Because you don't take it

  1090. as seriously

1091. as you do your schoolwork

  1092. or your job.

1093. And that's an indictment on you

  1094. if that's the case

1095. and your commitment to God

1096. and to living for Him

  1097. in this world.

1098. And if that's the case,

  1099. it can change today.

1100. Confess and repent of that

  1101. as sin.

1102. And ask God to help you

1103. to get even more serious

  1104. about knowing Him

1105. and His way and His will

  1106. through His Word

1107. than you are about your schoolwork

1108. and you are about your job.

1109. Be committed to your schoolwork.

1110. Be committed to your job.

1111. Just be more committed to God

1112. and live in life His way.

1113. As revealed in His Word.

  1114. Let's pray together.

  1115. Father,

1116. show us how we should respond

  1117. so that we can

  1118. be Christians,

  1119. your men and women

  1120. who think biblically

  1121. and as a result

1122. who live like your people

1123. and have the kind of influence

1124. you want us to have

  1125. as your representatives.

  1126. Let's just pray.

  1127. Talk to God.

  1128. Listen to God.

  1129. Obey God

1130. during these next few minutes.

  1131. Keep us a prayer.

  1132. God bless you.
