  1. You know, the overwhelming majority of us in this room have some knowledge of the Bible.

  2. Think about it.

  3. Most of us had parents, grandparents, or someone who took us to church and probably either

  4. read us the Bible or Bible stories.

  5. Most of us in this room have had several pastors and teachers in probably several different

  6. churches over our lifetimes who taught us the Bible, who went to great lengths to try

  7. to help us to understand and apply the teaching of God's Word.

  8. Now, I know that there are some in this room, you didn't grow up in church.

  9. No one ever took you or taught you, but God worked through your circumstances or certain

  10. people outside your family to bring you under the influence of God's Word.

  11. I say that because most likely you wouldn't be here right now if you didn't have some interest

  12. in learning from the Bible.

  13. Now, given that we've all been exposed to at least some biblical teaching, would you describe

  14. yourself as someone who thinks biblically?

  15. I want to make a clarification.

  16. The last two weeks, I asked a similar question, but the emphasis was on thinking.

  17. Do you think about what's true and right and lovely and these kind of things that we looked

  18. at from Philippians 4.8?

  19. I even asked, do you think?

  20. Because everybody doesn't think.

  21. But the focus today is on the second word.

  22. Do you think biblically?

  23. Do you look at life, put it this way, through the lens of Scripture?

  24. Do you look at what's going on around you?

  25. What's happening in your life?

  26. What's happening in our country?

  27. Do you think about the issues of today?

  28. Things about what's right and wrong?

  29. What's true and false?

  30. What's helpful or hurtful?

  31. Do you think about it in light of what you know the Bible teaches?

  32. Now, if we are Christians, we should answer that question with a very strong yes.

  33. But do we?

  34. Let's be honest.

  35. We don't always think, period.

  36. But we don't always think biblically, do we?

  37. We don't always look at the situations, the people in our lives, the circumstances,

  38. in light of what we know the Bible teaches.

  39. A lot of times we look at things according to how it affects me,

  40. according to how I feel, or according to how it affects my children or my grandchildren,

  41. or somebody we care about.

  42. I want you to think, when you don't think biblically,

  43. is it because you don't understand what the Bible is,

  44. the actual Word of God?

  45. Or, would you say that there are times you don't think biblically because you don't care?

  46. Even if it is the Word of God, you're going to do what you want to do.

  47. You're going to do what will most help you,

  48. regardless if it's right or wrong, true or false,

  49. helpful or hurtful to other people.

  50. Well, today's message is designed to teach us

  51. why we need to think biblically

  52. by showing us that the Bible is the most unique, powerful,

  53. and life-changing book that has ever been written.

  54. And I think Paul clearly and concisely explains that

  55. in 2 Timothy 3, verse 16,

    2 Timothy 3:16

  56. a scripture that I hope is familiar to most people in this room.

  57. Look at it on the screen.

  58. All scripture is breathed out by God

  59. and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction,

  60. and for training in righteousness.

  61. This verse is going to help us understand

  62. why we need to think biblically,

  63. why we need to look at the Bible

  64. as the filter through which we look at everything

  65. and help us make all our decisions.

  66. Let's look first.

  67. The Bible is God's authoritative word.

  68. And here's why we should think that.

  69. Paul explains clearly what the Bible is.

  70. It's authority.

  71. It's source.

  72. It's origin.

  73. Look at this.

  74. All scripture is breathed out by God.

  75. That's the English Standard Version.

  76. All scripture is God-breathed, NIV.

  77. All scripture is inspired by God.

  78. New American Standard.

  79. The word inspired literally means God-breathed.

  80. Paul is telling us that all scripture originates with God.

  81. Every book.

  82. When we talk about the Bible,

  83. we're talking about 66 different books.

  84. All kinds of books.

  85. And Paul says all scripture originated with God.

  86. He's talking about every book, every chapter,

  87. every verse, every word of scripture.

  88. Now what this means is every time you open the Bible

  89. and read whatever passage,

  90. whether it's poetry in the Psalms,

  91. whether it's a long story about the life of Abraham

  92. or Joseph or David in the Old Testament,

  93. or whether it's Paul's specific teaching about how we should think

  94. that we looked at the last two weeks.

  95. Every time you open the Bible,

  96. whatever the passage,

  97. you are reading the word of God.

  98. The God-breathed word.

  99. Now Paul's not alone in this very high view of the authority of scripture.

  100. Peter fully understood that scripture was the authoritative word of God,

  101. and he explains it like this.

  102. He says,

  103. Peter is actually being more precise in telling us

  104. that the writers of scripture wrote

  105. as they were directed by,

  106. influenced by,

  107. the Holy Spirit.

  108. Jerry Bridges, I think,

  109. does a good job of explaining

  110. what that means,

  111. how that came about.

  112. Bridges says,

  113. what Peter is telling us is that the Holy Spirit

  114. so moved upon and influenced the minds of these men

  115. as to render them the instruments of God

  116. for the infallible communication of his mind and will to us.

  117. This means that within the framework of each man's vocabulary

  118. and writing style,

  119. the Holy Spirit guided them

  120. that they chose exactly the words,

  121. not just the thoughts,

  122. that he intended them to use.

  123. We need to understand that God didn't dictate

  124. his word to these people.

  125. They were not in some kind of spiritually ecstatic state,

  126. in some kind of fog.

  127. They didn't know what they were doing.

  128. God providentially, throughout their lives,

  129. prepared each Bible writer

  130. with the life experience,

  131. the vocabulary,

  132. the ability to speak or write

  133. what he wanted,

  134. spoken and written down.

  135. Each man that God used to write the scripture,

  136. they were writing fully aware

  137. that God was working in them,

  138. but they didn't write about things

  139. they didn't know about.

  140. They didn't use words

  141. that were not a part of their vocabulary.

  142. It was not something artificial.

  143. God worked in them

  144. in a supernatural way

  145. to cause them to think

  146. what he wanted written

  147. the way he wanted it written.

  148. And so what we have

  149. is actually his word,

  150. his written word.

  151. Now when Paul and Peter penned these words,

  152. they were referring to the Old Testament.

  153. The New Testament,

  154. when Paul and Peter were writing,

  155. it was still in the process

  156. of being written.

  157. Some of their letters,

  158. some of the gospels

  159. were already written.

  160. Some of them were bound together

  161. and were circulating among churches.

  162. But the New Testament writers,

  163. they knew what they were doing.

  164. They knew what they were writing.

  165. They understood that they were writing

  166. the authoritative word of God.

  167. I'm going to give you some examples.

  168. Peter referred to Paul's writings

  169. as scripture,

  170. which would be Paul's letters.

  171. Look at this.

  172. And count the patience

  173. of our Lord as salvation,

  174. just as our beloved brother Paul

  175. also wrote to you

  176. according to the wisdom given him,

  177. as he does in all his letters

  178. when he speaks in them

  179. of these matters.

  180. There are some things in them

  181. that are hard to understand,

  182. which the ignorant and unstable

  183. twist to their own destruction

  184. as they do the other scriptures.

  185. Peter considered the writings of Paul.

  186. These letters like Philippians.

  187. This letter to Timothy,

  188. this second letter to Timothy.

  189. Peter considered what Paul was writing

  190. to be scripture.

  191. And what he's pointing out here,

  192. there are false teachers

  193. that just as they twisted

  194. the real meaning

  195. of the Old Testament scriptures

  196. to make it say what they wanted to say,

  197. they did the same thing

  198. in the New Testament,

  199. such as Paul's scriptures.

  200. Now, Paul quoted the words of Jesus

  201. that are actually recorded

  202. in Luke chapter 10 and verse 7,

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  203. and he calls them scripture.

  204. I want you to look at this.

  205. Paul writes,

  206. this is in 1 Timothy 5,

  207. for the scripture says,

  208. you shall not muzzle an ox

  209. when it treads out the grain.

  210. He's quoting from Deuteronomy 24.

  211. And the laborer deserves his wages.

  212. That comes from Luke chapter 10 and verse 7.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  213. So as Paul was writing that,

  214. he quoted scripture

  215. from what we would say,

  216. the Old Testament and the New,

  217. both the Word of God.

  218. Paul understood that he was writing

  219. under the influence of the Holy Spirit,

  220. that he was writing the Word of God as well.

  221. Look at two examples

  222. from 1 Corinthians.

  223. The things I am writing to you

  224. are a command of the Lord.

  225. And then in 1 Thessalonians 2.

  226. And we also thank God constantly for this,

  227. that when you receive the Word of God,

  228. which you heard from us,

  229. you accepted it not as the Word of men,

  230. but as what it really is,

  231. the Word of God.

  232. Paul understood that God was working in him,

  233. inspiring him to speak His Word

  234. as he taught the various churches

  235. where he went and preached and started churches.

  236. And as it was written down,

  237. it became the written Word of God.

  238. One other thought along this line.

  239. Jesus prepared His apostles

  240. for the task of writing Scripture

  241. by telling them that the Holy Spirit

  242. would enable them to accurately remember

  243. and record what He taught.

  244. It's in John chapter 14 and then chapter 16.

    John 14 chapter mention

  245. The night that Jesus was arrested,

  246. the next day He was going to be crucified.

  247. John 13, 14, 15, 16,

  248. what some people refer to as His farewell discourse.

  249. He covered a lot of subjects.

  250. But one of the things He covered was

  251. He told those guys later on,

  252. the Holy Spirit is going to enable you

  253. to remember, to recall,

  254. and then to record

  255. what needs to be written.

  256. Look at it.

  257. John 14, 26,

  258. but the Helper, the Holy Spirit,

  259. whom the Father will send in my name,

  260. He will teach you all things

  261. and bring to your remembrance

  262. all that I have said to you.

  263. And then John 16,

  264. when the Spirit of truth comes,

  265. He will guide you into all the truth.

  266. Now, all of these Scriptures you've seen,

  267. all of this to this point,

  268. we have every reason to conclude

  269. that when the Bible speaks,

  270. God speaks.

  271. We in this room,

  272. the overwhelming majority of us

  273. are professing Christians.

  274. We call ourselves children of God.

  275. I say all this to say,

  276. we as God's children

  277. need to have confidence,

  278. absolute confidence

  279. confidence

  280. that when we open the Bible,

  281. wherever,

  282. this is God's authoritative,

  283. binding word.

  284. This is God's truth.

  285. It is what's right and wrong,

  286. what is true and false.

  287. He's telling us

  288. how we should believe,

  289. how we should live.

  290. Now,

  291. do you have that kind of confidence?

  292. You open the Bible,

  293. this is God speaking.

  294. This is God's guidance.

  295. That's what we need to have

  296. if we're going to ever be able

  297. to truly think biblically,

  298. look at life

  299. through the lens of Scripture.

  300. But let's look at the second reason

  301. why we've got to think biblically.

  302. The Bible is God's profitable word.

  303. God's profitable word.

  304. That's how Paul describes the Bible.

  305. All Scripture is breathed out by God

  306. and profitable.

  307. Some translations use the word useful.

  308. Profitable for teaching,

  309. for reproof,

  310. for correction,

  311. and for training in righteousness.

  312. Because the Bible is the word of God,

  313. because the Bible is God breathed,

  314. it is profitable.

  315. It is useful.

  316. We can use this word.

  317. It is practical for us

  318. as Christians.

  319. You know,

  320. every true child of God

  321. loves their Heavenly Father

  322. and wants to please Him.

  323. That's something the Holy Spirit does

  324. in you and in me

  325. when He comes to live within us.

  326. When God saves us,

  327. I mention this frequently.

  328. When God saves us,

  329. He puts His Spirit in us.

  330. It's the Holy Spirit

  331. who gives us new desires,

  332. a new outlook,

  333. new loves.

  334. And one of the things

  335. the Holy Spirit does,

  336. He gives us a real love

  337. for God,

  338. our Heavenly Father.

  339. He makes our relationship

  340. with the Father real.

  341. Paul describes this

  342. in Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  343. and in Galatians chapter 4,

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  344. He describes how the Holy Spirit

  345. so works in us

  346. to cause us to have

  347. a certain kind of affection

  348. for God

  349. as our Heavenly Father.

  350. And He uses this phrase,

  351. the Holy Spirit causes us

  352. to think or to say,

  353. Abba, Father.

  354. A term of affection.

  355. Papa, Dad.

  356. That's how we should think of God.

  357. And what I'm saying here is,

  358. if we are Christians,

  359. God is not abstract to us.

  360. He's not some supreme being

  361. out there somewhere.

  362. If we are Christians,

  363. we are indwelled by the Spirit of God

  364. and God the Father is real to us.

  365. We love Him.

  366. We have a relationship with Him.

  367. We don't know everything about Him.

  368. There's a lot of things

  369. we do not understand for sure.

  370. We don't always feel

  371. as close to God every day

  372. as we do some days.

  373. But if we're Christians,

  374. the Spirit of God lives within us

  375. and we care about pleasing God.

  376. And if what I've just said

  377. is foreign to you,

  378. you don't have a clue

  379. what I'm talking about.

  380. Take that as the Lord speaking

  381. through His Word,

  382. Romans 8, Galatians 4.

  383. Take that as God saying,

  384. you're not a Christian.

  385. I don't know you.

  386. If you don't love me,

  387. if you don't have this desire

  388. to please me,

  389. something is terribly wrong.

  390. And it's probably that

  391. what you know about me

  392. is just theory,

  393. just thoughts.

  394. It's not a relationship.

  395. Paul identifies four ways

  396. here in 2 Timothy 3

  397. that the Bible is profitable

  398. or useful to us.

  399. First, the Bible is profitable

  400. for teaching.

  401. This refers to positive teaching.

  402. God makes His ways,

  403. His will known to us

  404. through the pages of Scripture.

  405. So if we're serious

  406. about wanting to do God's will,

  407. please God by doing His will,

  408. we'll want to read the Bible.

  409. Discover His ways,

  410. His will.

  411. Discover what pleases Him

  412. and what does not please Him.

  413. Such teaching

  414. that Paul's talking about

  415. is essential for us

  416. to be involved in

  417. if we want to please God.

  418. If we don't know

  419. what God's will,

  420. we can't do it.

  421. If you don't know what some,

  422. if you want to please somebody

  423. in your life,

  424. think about it.

  425. There's somebody

  426. that you know,

  427. that you love,

  428. maybe you're sitting

  429. with them right now,

  430. and it brings great joy to you,

  431. brings a smile to your face

  432. to do something

  433. that pleases them,

  434. that brings a smile

  435. to their face.

  436. Well, when you really

  437. want to do that

  438. because you know them,

  439. you know what

  440. will please them.

  441. What will please me

  442. may not please

  443. your son or husband.

  444. What would please

  445. my wife, Lisa,

  446. may not please you.

  447. But we know

  448. what will please

  449. the person we

  450. want to please.

  451. And so that's

  452. the kind of things

  453. that we do.

  454. To know how to please God,

  455. we've got to know

  456. his word.

  457. Paul,

  458. next one he says,

  459. number two,

  460. the Bible is profitable

  461. for reproof

  462. or some translations

  463. say rebuking.

  464. This is the negative

  465. aspect of teaching.

  466. It describes

  467. correcting error.

  468. Somebody said,

  469. the Bible is like

  470. a basketball referee

  471. that lets the player

  472. know when he commits

  473. a foul

  474. or he steps out of bounds.

  475. The referee upholds

  476. the rules of the game.

  477. Well, the Spirit of God

  478. uses the Word of God

  479. to convict us of sin.

  480. Sin can be thought

  481. as breaking God's rules,

  482. stepping out of bounds.

  483. So the Spirit of God

  484. uses the Word of God

  485. to correct us.

  486. Let us know

  487. when we've done

  488. what does not please God.

  489. Now,

  490. let's apply this.

  491. Here's an example

  492. of how the Bible

  493. is profitable

  494. or useful

  495. for teaching

  496. and rebuking

  497. in terms of

  498. what we actually believe.

  499. One of the most

  500. popular errors

  501. being taught

  502. in the world today

  503. is that all religions

  504. are basically the same.

  505. The mindset

  506. of our culture today

  507. is

  508. all religions

  509. are equally valid.

  510. including

  511. including

  512. no religion.

  513. And to be

  514. politically correct

  515. today,

  516. if you're a Christian,

  517. good for you.

  518. But you also

  519. need to say

  520. to the Jew,

  521. good for you.

  522. To the Muslim,

  523. good for you.

  524. To the Buddhist,

  525. good for you.

  526. The mindset

  527. of the world,

  528. all religions

  529. are basically the same.

  530. They're all

  531. equally valid.

  532. And so,

  533. whatever path

  534. you choose,

  535. you're going to

  536. wind up

  537. in the same place.

  538. Ultimately,

  539. the paths

  540. to heaven

  541. through Christianity,

  542. Judaism,

  543. Islam,

  544. whatever,

  545. they all reach

  546. the top

  547. where God is.

  548. Well,

  549. the Bible

  550. is very useful

  551. in helping us

  552. to understand

  553. that's wrong.

  554. That's

  555. heretical teaching.

  556. On one hand,

  557. it's foolish teaching.

  558. Because the Bible

  559. teaches something

  560. that's totally different

  561. from what Judaism

  562. teaches.

  563. Judaism teaches

  564. something that's

  565. totally different

  566. from what Buddhists

  567. believe.

  568. You can't believe

  569. they all can't be

  570. right logically.

  571. Even if you're

  572. an atheist,

  573. you cannot accept

  574. that they're all

  575. equally true.

  576. But,

  577. let's go back

  578. to the Bible.

  579. The Bible teaches

  580. there is only

  581. one way

  582. for any human

  583. being to be

  584. right with God

  585. and that is

  586. through faith

  587. in Jesus Christ.

  588. Jesus said it

  589. this way,

  590. I am the way

  591. and the truth

  592. and the life.

  593. No one

  594. comes to the Father

  595. except through me.

  596. The apostles

  597. heard Jesus say that.

  598. They embraced

  599. that as the truth

  600. and they said it

  601. in Acts 4.12.

  602. And there is salvation

  603. in no one else

  604. for there is

  605. no other name

  606. under heaven

  607. given among men

  608. by which we must

  609. be saved.

  610. The world says

  611. there's many ways

  612. to God.

  613. The Bible teaches

  614. there's only one way.

  615. That's not all

  616. the Bible does.

  617. The Bible rebukes,

  618. reproves,

  619. corrects,

  620. straightens out

  621. anyone who teaches

  622. otherwise.

  623. A good example

  624. of this is

  625. Galatians 1

    Galatians 1:8

  626. verses 8 and 9.

  627. Paul said,

  628. but even if we

  629. or an angel

  630. from heaven

  631. should preach

  632. to you

  633. a gospel

  634. contrary to the one

  635. that we preach

  636. to you,

  637. let him be accursed.

  638. Some translations

  639. say eternally

  640. condemned.

  641. As we have said

  642. before,

  643. so now I say

  644. again,

  645. if anyone is

  646. preaching to you

  647. a gospel contrary

  648. to the one you received,

  649. let him be accursed.

  650. Paul would not

  651. accept this

  652. universal belief

  653. that everybody's

  654. okay as long as

  655. you believe something,

  656. as long as you're

  657. sincere,

  658. it's okay.

  659. Years ago,

  660. not in this church,

  661. I spoke with a man,

  662. in fact,

  663. I was not his pastor,

  664. but I spoke with a man

  665. who was a deacon,

  666. long-term deacon

  667. in a Baptist church,

  668. and I don't know

  669. how the subject

  670. came up,

  671. but he told me

  672. very clearly

  673. he did not think

  674. that there's only

  675. one way

  676. for a person

  677. to be right

  678. with God.

  679. It can't be

  680. that you have

  681. to believe in Jesus

  682. to be saved.

  683. He made this statement

  684. that he believed

  685. that many people

  686. who sincerely

  687. held to their

  688. belief system,

  689. whatever it was,

  690. that they'd be

  691. in heaven one day.

  692. Paul would be

  693. irate

  694. at someone

  695. who would say that.

  696. Paul would say

  697. that's a different

  698. gospel,

  699. and anybody

  700. who would preach

  701. a different gospel

  702. like that,

  703. anybody who would

  704. lead somebody

  705. astray like that,

  706. let them be

  707. eternally damned

  708. is what he is

  709. literally saying.

  710. That's how strongly

  711. he believed

  712. that you got

  713. to correct

  714. or you got

  715. to rebuke

  716. error,

  717. and Paul

  718. made no,

  719. mince no words,

  720. did he?

  721. The Bible

  722. is profitable

  723. or useful

  724. in that it

  725. teaches us

  726. the truth

  727. and it rebukes

  728. us

  729. when we are

  730. in error.

  731. Number three,

  732. the Bible

  733. is profitable

  734. for correction.

  735. Correction

  736. means to confront

  737. what's wrong

  738. and straighten

  739. it out.

  740. Teach the

  741. correct way.

  742. The Bible

  743. gives us

  744. practical instruction

  745. on how we

  746. should live

  747. our lives

  748. in this world.

  749. The Bible

  750. gives us

  751. practical instruction

  752. on how we

  753. need to

  754. love our wives

  755. as husbands,

  756. how we

  757. need to

  758. discipline

  759. our children

  760. the right

  761. kind of way

  762. as fathers.

  763. The Bible

  764. talks about

  765. how we

  766. need to

  767. try to

  768. get along

  769. with

  770. everybody,

  771. Romans 12,

  772. as far as

  773. it depends

  774. on us.

  775. The Bible

  776. talks about

  777. how we

  778. need to

  779. learn to

  780. forgive

  781. people,

  782. let things

  783. go,

  784. don't hold

  785. grudges.

  786. The Bible

  787. is very

  788. practical

  789. in talking

  790. about how

  791. we need

  792. to be

  793. honest in

  794. our business

  795. dealings,

  796. not cheat

  797. people.

  798. Do what's

  799. right,

  800. do what's

  801. fair.

  802. Number

  803. four,

  804. the Bible

  805. is profitable

  806. for training

  807. us in

  808. righteousness.

  809. God doesn't

  810. just correct

  811. us when we

  812. do wrong.

  813. God gives

  814. us positive

  815. instruction

  816. on how we

  817. can please

  818. Him in the

  819. kind of things

  820. I was just

  821. mentioning.

  822. The Bible

  823. trains or

  824. disciplines us

  825. to live in a

  826. right relationship

  827. with God and

  828. other people.

  829. You can say

  830. it this way,

  831. the Bible

  832. trains us

  833. or disciplines

  834. us to

  835. live a

  836. holy

  837. life.

  838. Now,

  839. let's apply

  840. this.

  841. Let's think

  842. of an

  843. example of

  844. correction and

  845. training and

  846. righteousness that

  847. we find in the

  848. Bible.

  849. What I'm

  850. doing,

  851. I didn't

  852. intend for

  853. this to be a

  854. real full-blown

  855. series,

  856. but it is

  857. thinking

  858. biblically.

  859. What I'm

  860. trying to do

  861. is apply the

  862. scripture to

  863. some practical

  864. things that are

  865. going on today

  866. in our country

  867. or just things

  868. in this world.

  869. I started off

  870. by talking

  871. about we

  872. need to think

  873. biblically about

  874. governmental

  875. authority that

  876. first week at

  877. the end of

  878. June.

  879. And what I was

  880. talking about

  881. how today law

  882. enforcement officers,

  883. they've been

  884. demonized as a

  885. whole profession,

  886. but the Bible

  887. does not do

  888. that.

  889. The Bible talks

  890. about law

  891. enforcement

  892. officers having

  893. the God-given

  894. responsibility to

  895. enforce the

  896. laws, to

  897. administer justice.

  898. They have a

  899. good and

  900. honorable place in

  901. this world and

  902. they should be

  903. respected.

  904. The bad ones

  905. should be weeded

  906. out for sure,

  907. but the law

  908. enforcement profession

  909. is an honorable

  910. profession with a

  911. God-given

  912. responsibility.

  913. The next week I

  914. preached on the

  915. thinking biblically

  916. about racism and

  917. it seems in this

  918. culture today that

  919. the real focus is

  920. on not that both

  921. black and white

  922. people can be

  923. prejudiced, but

  924. only that white

  925. people can be

  926. prejudiced.

  927. And there's a

  928. great emphasis on

  929. that racism is just

  930. embedded in our

  931. culture, it's

  932. systemic, it's

  933. upheld by law and

  934. in institutions and

  935. it is not, as I

  936. pointed out in that

  937. sermon, we need to

  938. look at what's going

  939. on in our world

  940. today in light of

  941. what the Bible

  942. teaches.

  943. One of the great

  944. errors of today that

  945. I've not brought up

  946. in quite some time,

  947. and I'm going to

  948. bring it up today

  949. because it needs to

  950. be brought up,

  951. same-sex marriage

  952. has become legal in

  953. this country.

  954. The Supreme Court

  955. basically, in effect,

  956. legalized through law

  957. same-sex marriage.

  958. It is not the

  959. Supreme Court's place

  960. in our Constitution,

  961. in our government,

  962. to make laws, but to

  963. interpret them.

  964. But they sometimes

  965. get that twisted.

  966. Same-sex marriage has

  967. become legalized by the

  968. ruling of the Supreme

  969. Court in this country.

  970. today's culture

  971. willingly accepts

  972. homosexual behavior

  973. as normal.

  974. It's just another way

  975. to live.

  976. And today's culture

  977. condemns anyone

  978. like me, like you

  979. if you do, condemns

  980. anyone who calls it

  981. sinful behavior.

  982. There are many

  983. liberal churches and

  984. their entire

  985. denomination that

  986. will ordain a

  987. gay man or a

  988. gay woman as a

  989. pastor in the

  990. church.

  991. There are many

  992. liberal churches

  993. that will affirm

  994. same-sex marriages.

  995. This is our world

  996. today.

  997. This is today's

  998. culture.

  999. Well, the Bible

  1000. corrects this

  1001. erroneous and

  1002. sinful behavior and

  1003. teaching by pointing

  1004. out how God

  1005. condemns such

  1006. relationships and

  1007. such behaviors.

  1008. I'll give you two

  1009. examples.

  1010. One from Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  1011. chapter 1.

  1012. Look at this.

  1013. For this reason, God

  1014. gave them up to

  1015. dishonorable passions.

  1016. For their women

  1017. exchanged natural

  1018. relations for those

  1019. that are contrary to

  1020. nature.

  1021. And the men

  1022. likewise gave up

  1023. natural relations

  1024. with women and

  1025. were consumed with

  1026. passion for one

  1027. another.

  1028. Men committing

  1029. shameless acts

  1030. with men and

  1031. receiving in

  1032. themselves the due

  1033. penalty for their

  1034. error.

  1035. Now, the next

  1036. one comes from

  1037. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  1038. chapter 6.

  1039. And I want you

  1040. to note, I

  1041. want to stress

  1042. this.

  1043. Paul mentions

  1044. people who

  1045. practice

  1046. homosexuality as

  1047. being condemned

  1048. by God, but it

1049. is in a list of

  1050. many things that

  1051. are condemned by

  1052. God.

  1053. So let's look at

  1054. it.

  1055. He's writing to a

  1056. church, remember,

  1057. the Corinthian

  1058. church.

  1059. Or do you not

  1060. know that the

  1061. unrighteous will

  1062. not inherit the

  1063. kingdom of God?

  1064. Do not be

  1065. deceived.

  1066. Neither the

  1067. sexually immoral,

  1068. that includes people

  1069. involved in

  1070. premarital sex,

  1071. people involved in

  1072. any kind of sexual

  1073. relationship with

  1074. someone other than

  1075. your husband, if

  1076. you're a woman, or

  1077. a wife, if you're a

  1078. man.

  1079. Do not be deceived.

  1080. Neither the sexually

  1081. immoral, nor

  1082. idolaters, nor

  1083. adulterers, nor men

  1084. who practice

  1085. homosexuality, nor

  1086. thieves, nor the

  1087. greedy, nor drunkards,

  1088. nor revilers, nor

  1089. swindlers will

  1090. inherit the kingdom

  1091. of God.

  1092. It's Paul's there.

  1093. Paul is really just

  1094. saying here, no one

  1095. who lives, no one

  1096. who willingly lives

  1097. engages in such a

  1098. sinful lifestyle is a

  1099. Christian.

  1100. Therefore, no one who

  1101. lives this way openly,

  1102. unashamedly, they're not

1103. a part of the kingdom of

  1104. God.

  1105. Let's move on.

  1106. Writing to these same

  1107. church, the very next

  1108. phrase, and such were

1109. some of you, but you've

  1110. been washed.

  1111. You were sanctified.

1112. You were justified in the

1113. name of the Lord Jesus

  1114. Christ and by the

  1115. Spirit of our God.

  1116. Paul is condemning

  1117. sinful behavior of any

  1118. stripe that a person

  1119. willfully, intentionally

  1120. engages in with no

  1121. remorse.

1122. That's just who they are.

  1123. They're not a Christian

1124. if that's who they are.

1125. They're not going to be in

  1126. heaven.

1127. But, these very kinds of

  1128. people engage in these

  1129. kinds of behaviors, some

  1130. of these people were

  1131. saved.

  1132. They repented of their

  1133. sin.

  1134. They were forgiven.

  1135. God changed them and

  1136. enabled them to overcome

  1137. that sinful lifestyle.

1138. God's word condemns sin, but

1139. God's word is filled with

1140. grace and the offer of

  1141. salvation and forgiveness to

1142. all sinners who will repent

1143. of their sin and turn to

1144. Jesus Christ in faith and

  1145. commitment.

1146. I want to pause here and

1147. point out, everybody who came

1148. out of that lifestyle, those

  1149. different lifestyle.

  1150. Let's look at a person who

1151. was a drunkard as the

  1152. scripture says here.

1153. There are men and women who

1154. are alcoholics who truly are

  1155. born again.

1156. They repent of their sin.

  1157. They trust Jesus.

  1158. They're forgiven.

  1159. They're cleansed and made

  1160. right with God.

1161. But some of these people fall

1162. back into alcohol for a

  1163. while.

1164. God is such a demon that they

1165. give in to the temptation

  1166. and they sin again.

1167. That does not disqualify them

1168. from the kingdom of heaven.

1169. If they're truly saved, when

1170. they sin like this, sooner or

  1171. later they're convicted, they're

1172. broken, they repent of it, and

1173. they come back to the Lord.

1174. That would be true about

  1175. somebody who is engaging

  1176. homosexual behavior.

1177. Such a person may be saved,

1178. forgiven, made right with God,

1179. but fall back into that for a

  1180. time.

  1181. But if they're truly

  1182. Christians, they'll know it's

  1183. sin, it's wrong, and they'll

1184. come back to the Lord in

  1185. confession and repentance.

  1186. The Bible corrects wrongness

  1187. behavior.

1188. And then look at this.

1189. The Bible also trains us in

  1190. righteousness.

1191. And so we're on the subject here

  1192. of homosexuality, same-sex

  1193. marriage.

1194. The Bible trains us in

  1195. righteousness concerning the

1196. subject of, let's just say,

  1197. marriage.

  1198. Heterosexual relationships.

  1199. Male-female relationships.

1200. The Bible teaches us how God

1201. created and designed men and

1202. women to live together in a

  1203. proper marriage relationship.

  1204. The beginning, Genesis 2.

1205. Therefore a man shall leave his

1206. father and mother and hold fast

1207. to his wife, and they shall

  1208. become one flesh.

  1209. That's the foundation for

  1210. marriage.

  1211. That's God's plan for most

  1212. people.

1213. Some people will be single.

1214. If you're not going to live

1215. single, this is God's plan to

  1216. live, if you're a man with a

1217. woman in a one flesh, permanent

  1218. relationship.

  1219. Jesus emphasized that God

  1220. intended marriage, Jesus

  1221. emphasized now, that God

1222. intended marriage to be a

  1223. permanent relationship between

  1224. a man and woman.

  1225. Look at this.

1226. And the Pharisees came up to

1227. him and tested him by asking,

1228. is it lawful to divorce one's

  1229. wife for any cause?

1230. He answered, have you not read

1231. that he who created them from

1232. the beginning, made them male

1233. and female, and said, therefore

1234. a man shall leave his father

1235. and his mother and hold fast to

1236. his wife, and the two shall

  1237. become one flesh?

1238. So they're no longer two, but

  1239. one flesh.

  1240. What therefore?

  1241. God is joined together.

  1242. Let not man separate.

1243. In the context of Matthew 19

1244. here, Jesus is talking about it

1245. is not God's will that a marriage

  1246. end and divorce.

  1247. If you're married and you're

1248. having problems, don't give up on

  1249. your marriage.

1250. Don't give up on your spouse.

1251. No matter what anybody else tells

  1252. you, pray.

  1253. Work with your spouse.

1254. Work with a Christian counselor.

1255. Father, fight for your marriage.

1256. Do everything that you can to save it,

1257. but not just to save it, to make it

  1258. what it should be.

  1259. A mutual, meeting one another's needs,

  1260. loving, intimate relationship.

1261. But, while divorce is never God's

1262. ideal, God does allow divorce under

  1263. certain conditions.

1264. Jesus went on in this chapter,

1265. chapter 19, to point out one,

  1266. sexual immorality.

1267. Paul points out another one in 1

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

1268. Corinthians chapter 7, desertion by an

  1269. unbelieving spouse.

1270. There are grounds for divorce.

1271. And when that happens, it was not

1272. God's ideal, but God forgives.

1273. God wipes the slate clean.

1274. God can give you a fresh start.

1275. And I want you to hear that word of

1276. hope and grace as well.

1277. But my point here is the Bible is

  1278. very useful.

  1279. It's very practical.

  1280. Very practical.

1281. The Spirit of God uses the Word of God

  1282. to correct us.

  1283. We make sinful choices.

1284. And it doesn't matter what the world

  1285. says.

1286. And the Word of God, the Spirit of God

1287. uses the Word of God to train us to

1288. make the right choices that please God

1289. and make our lives better.

1290. I want to throw this out real quickly

  1291. here.

1292. One of the great disappointments to me

1293. and many Christians over the years,

  1294. there have been Bible-believing,

  1295. evangelical seminary professors,

  1296. pastors, other church leaders

1297. who have taught the truth about

  1298. same-sex marriage, homosexuality,

1299. that it was sinful behavior.

1300. Until their son or their daughter

1301. or someone close to them came out as gay.

1302. And then they changed their beliefs.

1303. What that means is such a person

1304. made what their son or daughter or friend

1305. did as the standard for their behavior

1306. or their standard for what's right and wrong.

1307. They abandoned the truth of God's Word

1308. in favor of how it affected someone

  1309. that they loved.

1310. We don't have that option as a Christian.

  1311. Love your children.

  1312. Love people.

1313. Bend over backwards to meet their needs,

1314. to be a friend, to help them.

1315. But never let someone else

1316. and their beliefs or their lifestyle

  1317. be the standard

  1318. for your beliefs

  1319. and your lifestyle.

1320. You know, the only way we can think biblically

1321. is know what the Bible teaches.

  1322. Number three,

1323. the Bible must be read and studied.

1324. And that's going to be something

1325. we're going to probably just,

1326. I'm going to conclude in the newsletter.

  1327. I didn't realize it till

1328. the first service this morning,

  1329. but I didn't talk fast enough

1330. to get through point three.

1331. So I'm going to go straight

  1332. to the conclusion here.

1333. Can you honestly describe yourself

1334. as someone who thinks biblically

1335. and therefore you live biblically?

  1336. You've developed your beliefs

  1337. and your lifestyle

1338. based on what you know

  1339. the Bible teaches.

  1340. Is that true?

1341. Let me ask it another way.

1342. Is that how you want to live?

1343. Do you want it to be true?

1344. Do you want it to be true?

1345. Hear me real carefully here.

1346. If you've listened to this sermon

1347. and you're just basically indifferent

  1348. or you don't care

  1349. or you reject it,

1350. you need to do some very serious soul searching

1351. because the Apostle John says

1352. that living according to the truth of God's word

1353. is one of the indications

1354. of whether or not you are a Christian.

  1355. Look at this.

1356. John writes in 1 John chapter 2,

    1 John 2 chapter mention

1357. and by this we know

1358. that we've come to know Him

1359. if we keep His commandments.

1360. Whoever says I know Him

1361. but does not keep His commandments

  1362. is a liar

1363. and the truth is not in him.

1364. But whoever keeps His word in Him truly,

1365. the love of God is perfected.

1366. By this we may know

1367. that we are in Him.

  1368. John's real clear.

  1369. If we're Christians,

1370. we'll not just believe the Bible

  1371. to be God's word.

1372. We'll seek to live according to it.

  1373. If you're a child of God,

1374. living in fellowship with God,

1375. there's no doubt you desire

  1376. to think and live

1377. according to the truth of God's word.

1378. And if that is how you would respond this morning,

1379. then you need to thank God

1380. for the work He's done

1381. in bringing you to this point.

  1382. You're a trophy of God's grace

1383. if that's how you think.

1384. And ask God to help you

  1385. to continue

  1386. to believe and behave

1387. according to the truth of His word.

1388. But if you really and truly

  1389. don't care,

  1390. get this over with,

1391. I'm going to do what I want to do,

1392. live the way I want to live,

  1393. don't call yourself a Christian.

1394. And if that bothers you,

  1395. if what John says,

1396. who does not keep His commandments

  1397. is a liar,

  1398. if that bothers you,

  1399. good.

1400. Let it drive you to your knees

  1401. in humility and brokenness,

  1402. repent of your sin

  1403. and trust Jesus now

1404. and truly commit your life to Him.

  1405. The final thought here,

  1406. if you have fully

  1407. known what it means

1408. to think and live biblically

  1409. and deep down,

1410. that's what you want right now.

1411. The truth is you are not,

1412. maybe because you just drifted away

  1413. from the Lord.

1414. You just let your life get too busy.

1415. You just drifted away unintentionally.

  1416. Or maybe you've rebelled

  1417. for whatever reason.

1418. I want to encourage you

  1419. to confess your sin,

  1420. your drift,

  1421. your rebellion,

  1422. whatever it is,

1423. and come back to the Lord now

  1424. in a new,

  1425. wholehearted commitment

1426. to Jesus as the Lord of your life

1427. and to the Word of God

  1428. as your ultimate authority

1429. for what you're going to believe

1430. and how you're going to live.
