  1. Turn in your Bible to Matthew chapter 25 and leave it open.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  2. We're going to come to that passage later on in the message.

  3. It's rather lengthy.

  4. We're going to look at a parable of Jesus,

  5. and it's too long to put on the screen.

  6. So if you would, Matthew 25,

  7. and have it open there when we come to it

  8. a little bit later in the message.

  9. We're going to continue to think biblically

  10. about socialism this morning.

  11. We're going to look and see how,

  12. as we began last week,

  13. socialism is contrary to God's design

  14. for how life is to be lived in this world

  15. and for us to take care of ourselves and our families

  16. and even people who have legitimate needs.

  17. Christian Post columnist Julie Royce

  18. does a good job of pointing out

  19. one of the foundational flaws of socialism

  20. is that it is based completely on a materialistic view

  21. of life or worldview.

  22. Look at this.

  23. To socialists, suffering is caused

  24. by the unequal distribution of stuff,

  25. and salvation is achieved by the redistribution of stuff.

  26. There's no acknowledgement of spiritual issues.

  27. There's just an assumption

  28. that if everyone is given equal stuff,

  29. all the problems in society will somehow dissolve.

  30. Let me just point out here.

  31. How many people who espouse any aspect of socialism

  32. ever talk about other thing than,

  33. ever talk about anything but materialistic problems?

  34. You rarely ever hear anyone mention

  35. anything about a spiritual problem.

  36. She goes on.

  37. This worldview contradicts Christianity,

  38. which affirms the existence

  39. of both a material and non-material world

  40. and teaches that mankind's greatest problems are spiritual.

  41. The Bible says the cause of suffering is sin.

  42. That's the bottom line, cause.

  43. And salvation is found in the cross of Christ,

  44. which liberates us from sin.

  45. As Christians, we need to understand

  46. socialism is not just a political thing.

  47. It's not just a matter of economics.

  48. It is a moral, spiritual, and biblical issue.

  49. And what I want us to do is continue today

  50. to look at it from a biblical perspective.

  51. Let's go ahead.

  52. I'm gonna cover some of the things we did last week quickly.

  53. I'm not gonna show all the scripture

  54. and certainly not gonna go over everything we did last week,

  55. but to make it flow, we're gonna hit some highlights.

  56. Let's begin with defining what socialism is.

  57. Socialism is any economic or political system

  58. based on government ownership and or control

  59. of important businesses, methods of production,

  60. distribution of goods, et cetera.

  61. Socialism, when you boil it down,

  62. replaces private ownership and or control

  63. of property, production, distribution, and so forth.

  64. It replaces it with government ownership

  65. or control of property, production, and distribution.

  66. You know, one of the goal of socialists in this country

  67. is to redistribute wealth.

  68. And what they're gonna do,

  69. what they're talking about doing

  70. is penalizing those who have been the most successful

  71. in producing wealth for themselves and other people

  72. and more government regulations,

  73. which means government control.

  74. These socialists are talking about rewarding those

  75. who have been the least successful

  76. in producing wealth for themselves and other people

  77. and will make these people more dependent

  78. on the government and the government's control.

  79. All of this, everything in a nutshell

  80. that socialism promotes, desires,

  81. gives government more power and control

  82. over everyone and everything.

  83. Now, how is socialism contrary to God's design?

  84. That's the point we're looking at.

  85. It's not a political message.

  86. It's a biblical message.

  87. How is socialism contrary to God's design?

  88. Well, as we saw last week, real quickly,

  89. God created human beings in His image

  90. and we're the only thing in creation

  91. created in the image of God.

  92. He intends for us to be stewards or managers

  93. of all that He created and owns.

  94. We looked at that from Genesis 1,

    Genesis 1:26

  95. verses 26 and 28.

  96. Now, as God's stewards,

  97. God has given human beings the privilege

  98. and the responsibility of having earthly ownership

  99. of private property.

  100. Scripture clearly and repeatedly reveals

  101. that God intends for people like you and me

  102. to own things, to have possessions,

  103. to have private property.

  104. In fact, the entire Old Testament system

  105. of giving offerings and making sacrifices

  106. is based on the fact that human beings own something

  107. and can give it.

  108. R.C. Sproul explains it.

  109. The offertory system of the Old Testament

  110. makes no sense when divorced from the system

  111. of private property.

  112. One of the basic stipulations of making an offering

  113. is that you present something which belongs to you.

  114. You can't give an offering with my money.

  115. I can't give an offering with your money.

  116. If we're going to give unto God,

  117. it's got to be something that originates from us.

  118. We are actually giving of ourselves

  119. something we have earned or acquired.

  120. It's an offering.

  121. Sometimes it's a sacrifice.

  122. The right of human ownership, continue with Sproul,

  123. the right of human ownership is something God has assigned

  124. as a part of our covenant partnership with Him in creation.

  125. Another example from Scripture.

  126. Two of the Ten Commandments reveal that God

  127. not only approves of people's right to own property,

  128. God protects that.

  129. Look at this.

  130. The Eighth Commandment.

  131. You shall not steal.

  132. You know what that means.

  133. God forbids anyone from taking what rightfully belongs

  134. to someone else.

  135. God prevents you from taking from me what is mine.

  136. The Tenth Commandment says, or begins,

  137. you shall not covet.

  138. Covenant is an improper desire,

  139. a sinful desire, a selfish desire.

  140. So God even prevents us from having selfish desires

  141. to have what rightfully belongs to someone else.

  142. So the Bible is clear just from these examples

  143. that socialism or any kind of economic or political system

  144. that prevents private ownership

  145. and personal control of property and possessions

  146. is unbiblical.

  147. Since it's contrary to God's design,

  148. it is unethical.

  149. Now another reason why socialism is wrong

  150. is because it fails to follow God's design

  151. for how people acquire possessions.

  152. Look at this.

  153. God calls human beings to take care of His creation

  154. and themselves by working.

  155. We're going to be real quick with this.

  156. We've looked at it before.

  157. Last week, before sin entered the world,

  158. God gave Adam and Eve jobs to do.

  159. Work to be done.

  160. Look at it.

  161. The general statement.

  162. And God blessed them.

  163. And God said to them,

  164. Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth

  165. and subdue it and have dominion.

  166. More specifically, in Genesis 2.15,

  167. the Lord took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden

  168. to work it and to keep it.

  169. Work did become more difficult after the fall.

  170. That's what a lot of people have in mind,

  171. that work is something that happened

  172. after sin entered the world.

  173. Well, that's in Genesis 3.

  174. And after sin, work became more toilsome,

  175. more burdensome.

  176. But work was originally a part of God's good creation

  177. for all human beings.

  178. The Bible is also filled with statements

  179. about the importance of working

  180. to provide for yourself and your family

  181. and not to be dependent on other people.

  182. Look at this.

  183. I want to just look at some highlights

  184. from these verses.

  185. You should mind your own business

  186. and work with your hands

  187. so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

  188. But if anyone does not provide for his relatives

  189. and especially for members of his household,

  190. he has denied the faith

  191. and is worse than an unbeliever.

  192. One more.

  193. For even when we were with you,

  194. we would give you this command.

  195. If anyone was not willing to work,

  196. let him not eat.

  197. Now such persons we command and encourage

  198. the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly

  199. and to earn their own living.

  200. Now we looked at that last week.

  201. If you were not here last week,

  202. I meant to have said this at the beginning.

  203. I would encourage you to go back,

  204. look online and look at this message

  205. because we covered some good things last week,

  206. important things that'll help you to understand

  207. why socialism is contrary to God's design.

  208. If you don't have access to the internet,

  209. call the church office.

  210. We can send you a copy of it.

  211. R.C. Sproul makes an important statement

  212. that ties together what the Bible says about work

  213. and the ownership of private property.

  214. He says,

  215. the sanctity of labor

  216. is the ground basis for private property.

  217. In both the old and new covenants,

  218. the call to labor is an emphatic one,

  219. bringing fruit as its just reward.

  220. The avoidance of labor is regarded as sin.

  221. Paul commands labor as an ethical norm.

  222. Now I want you to notice the second sentence in particular.

  223. Look at it again.

  224. In both the old and new covenants,

  225. the call to labor is an emphatic one,

  226. bringing fruit as its just reward.

  227. Sproul is saying here

  228. that God intends for our work

  229. to be fruitful or to be productive.

  230. And one of the fruits of our labors

  231. is that we acquire things.

  232. We accumulate wealth.

  233. Now, God holds us responsible

  234. to do it the right way.

  235. We'll talk more next week

  236. about the dangers of wealth.

  237. And there are Bibles filled with statements,

  238. warnings about the dangers

  239. of acquiring wealth the wrong way

  240. and using it the wrong way.

  241. So it matters greatly to God

  242. our motivation, our actions,

  243. how we treat people

  244. as we work and accumulate wealth.

  245. But God does intend for us

  246. to be rewarded for being productive.

  247. God intends for us to be rewarded

  248. to experience and enjoy the fruits

  249. of our labor without guilt.

  250. So keep that in mind.

  251. We're going to come to it

  252. in more detail in a moment.

  253. God intends, the next point,

  254. God intends for the work of human beings

  255. to be productive or fruitful and rewarding.

  256. Now, I want us to think about Genesis 128.

  257. Immediately after God created Adam and Eve,

  258. He charged them with this responsibility.

  259. Look at it.

  260. And God blessed them,

  261. and God said to them,

  262. Be fruitful and multiply

  263. and fill the earth and subdue it

  264. and have dominion over the fish of the sea

  265. and over the birds of the heavens

  266. and over every living thing

  267. that moves on the earth.

  268. Several commentators point out

  269. how the command to subdue the earth

  270. means to make the earth productive,

  271. make this world useful for human beings.

  272. Now, I think Wayne Grudem does the best job

  273. of explaining how this works,

  274. what this means and how it works.

  275. Look at this.

  276. He says,

  277. The Hebrew word translated as subdue

  278. means to make the earth useful

  279. for human beings' benefit and enjoyment.

  280. God was entrusting Adam and Eve

  281. and by implication of the entire human race

  282. with stewardship over the earth.

  283. God wanted them to create useful products

  284. from the earth for their benefit and enjoyment.

  285. At first, perhaps,

  286. simple structures in which to live and store food,

  287. later various forms of transportation

  288. such as carts and wagons,

  289. then eventually modern homes,

  290. office buildings and factories,

  291. as well as cars and airplanes,

  292. the entire range of useful products

  293. that could be made from the earth.

  294. In this way,

  295. God gave to human beings

  296. the ability to create value

  297. in the world that did not exist before.

  298. Now, I want you to think.

  299. In the beginning,

  300. God created everything.

  301. He created Adam and Eve

  302. and put them in the garden.

  303. And He gave them this command.

  304. Subdue the earth.

  305. Get dominion.

  306. And what Grudem is saying is,

  307. from the beginning of creation

  308. right up till today,

  309. that's what has happened.

  310. Human beings,

  311. by the grace and enabling wisdom

  312. and power of God,

  313. have taken the raw materials of creation

  314. and through thinking

  315. and being creative

  316. and trial and error

  317. and all these kind of things,

  318. have put things together

  319. in a way

  320. that we know them today

  321. as clothes

  322. and cars

  323. and homes

  324. and computers.

  325. This didn't just fall out of the sky one day.

  326. This is how God has worked

  327. through human beings

  328. to make life

  329. in some ways simpler,

  330. some ways more complex,

  331. but to make life easier,

  332. more enjoyable,

  333. more productive

  334. as time has gone on.

  335. Now, you think to yourself,

  336. I wish I could go back in time.

  337. I want to ask you something.

  338. Do you really wish

  339. you could go back

  340. and live in a cabin in the woods

  341. with no running water,

  342. no heat in the winter,

  343. no cooling in the summer,

  344. no way to get around

  345. but to walk or ride a horse,

  346. an outhouse,

  347. and all those kind of things?

  348. I'll be honest with you.

  349. I enjoyed sleeping last night

  350. and getting up this morning

  351. in an air-conditioned house.

  352. Taking a shower with hot water.

  353. I enjoyed getting in my truck

  354. and driving up here

  355. with air-conditioning on.

  356. I'm glad I'm not running around

  357. in a loincloth,

  358. and I know you are too.

  359. This is what has happened.

  360. According to the design of God,

  361. people have

  362. used their God-given,

  363. because we're created in God's image,

  364. ability,

  365. creativity

  366. to make life

  367. advance as it has

  368. and to be where we are right now.

  369. Grudem goes on to point out

  370. how God

  371. is the one who gave us

  372. the desire

  373. to be productive like this.

  374. Look at it.

  375. Because God gave to human beings

  376. the command to subdue the earth,

  377. it is reasonable to conclude

  378. that He also placed in our hearts

  379. a desire to fulfill that command.

  380. We should not dismiss

  381. this innate human drive

  382. for material productivity

  383. and flourishing

  384. as greedy materialism

  385. as many socialists do,

  386. or sin.

  387. It can be distorted

  388. by selfishness and sin,

  389. and we know that it is.

  390. But the drive to create,

  391. produce,

  392. and enjoy useful products

  393. ultimately comes

  394. from a morally good,

  395. God-given instinct

  396. that He placed

  397. within the human race

  398. before there was any sin

  399. in the world

  400. when He commanded Adam and Eve

  401. to fill the earth,

  402. subdue it,

  403. and have dominion

  404. over all of it.

  405. Socialists

  406. like to condemn

  407. prosperity

  408. and the accumulation

  409. of wealth

  410. by saying

  411. it just comes

  412. from greed

  413. or an abuse

  414. of power

  415. and privilege

  416. or a lack

  417. of concern

  418. for anyone

  419. but yourself,

  420. especially the poor

  421. in society.

  422. Well,

  423. that is true

  424. about some people

  425. who are prosperous

  426. and wealthy,

  427. but I want you

  428. to know this too.

  429. That's true

  430. about poor people.

  431. Poor people

  432. can be just as greedy

  433. as rich people.

  434. Poor people

  435. can just be all

  436. about themselves

  437. and care nothing

  438. about anyone

  439. just as much

  440. as a wealthy person.

  441. And a poor person

  442. can take what little

  443. power or privilege

  444. they have

  445. and abuse other people

  446. or ignore other people

  447. with it.

  448. The truth is,

  449. the fact is,

  450. many people

  451. have become prosperous,

  452. have accumulated

  453. wealth

  454. by working hard,

  455. being productive,

  456. and wisely

  457. managing their money.

  458. And I want you

  459. to think,

  460. isn't that what

  461. you have done

  462. to this point

  463. or tried to do?

  464. It's what I try

  465. to do.

  466. Isn't that what

  467. you want to do

  468. right now

  469. to provide for yourself

  470. and your family?

  471. to work,

  472. to be productive,

  473. to wisely manage

  474. what you have,

  475. to let it accumulate,

  476. and then to enjoy it

  477. the right way,

  478. God's way?

  479. that's what

  480. we're talking about

  481. this morning.

  482. And when we do enjoy,

  483. well,

  484. we should be able

  485. to enjoy the fruit

  486. of our labor

  487. without guilt,

  488. and we should be able

  489. to enjoy it

  490. without the fear

  491. of anyone,

  492. including the government,

  493. taking it away

  494. from us

  495. and redistributing

  496. it to people

  497. who may not care

  498. anything in the world

  499. about being productive

  500. or wisely managing

  501. what they have.

  502. Look at the next point.

  503. God wants us

  504. to enjoy the rewards

  505. of faithful labor,

  506. and I want to show you

  507. how that is seen

  508. in two parables

  509. that Jesus told

  510. God rewards stewardship.

  511. The first one

  512. is what we're going

  513. to read

  514. from Matthew 25.

  515. Matthew 25,

  516. beginning in verse 14.

  517. The parable of the talents.

  518. Now, talent

  519. was a huge sum of money,

  520. a monetary unit

  521. worth about 20 years' wages

  522. for a laborer.

  523. You'll see in the footnote

  524. of the ESV translation.

  525. Here's the story

  526. Jesus told.

  527. For it will be like

  528. a man going on a journey

  529. who called his servants

  530. and entrusted to them

  531. his property.

  532. To one he gave

  533. five talents,

  534. to another two,

  535. to another one,

  536. to each according

  537. to his ability.

  538. Now notice that.

  539. In the original distribution

  540. by the master

  541. who represents God,

  542. he doesn't give

  543. the same to each person.

  544. He gives one five,

  545. one two,

  546. and one one,

  547. each according

  548. to his ability.

  549. Then he went away.

  550. He who had received

  551. the five talents

  552. went at once

  553. and traded with them,

  554. and he made

  555. five talents more.

  556. So also,

  557. he who had the two talents

  558. made two talents more.

  559. But he who had received

  560. the one talent

  561. went and dug

  562. into the ground

  563. and hid

  564. his master's money.

  565. Now after a long time,

  566. the master

  567. of those servants

  568. came and settled

  569. accounts with them.

  570. And he who had received

  571. the five talents

  572. came forward,

  573. bringing five talents more,

  574. saying,

  575. Master,

  576. you delivered to me

  577. five talents here.

  578. I have made

  579. five talents more.

  580. His master said to him,

  581. Well done,

  582. good and faithful servant.

  583. You've been faithful

  584. over a little.

  585. I will set you over much.

  586. Enter into the joy

  587. of your master.

  588. And he also,

  589. who had the two talents,

  590. came forward,

  591. saying,

  592. Master,

  593. you delivered to me

  594. two talents here.

  595. I have made

  596. two talents more.

  597. His master said to him,

  598. the very same thing

  599. that he said

  600. to the guy with five.

  601. He said,

  602. I lost my place.

  603. His master said to him,

  604. Well done,

  605. good and faithful servant.

  606. You have been faithful

  607. over a little.

  608. I will set you over much.

  609. Enter into the joy

  610. of your master.

  611. Now,

  612. he also,

  613. who had received

  614. the one talent,

  615. came forward,

  616. saying,

  617. Master,

  618. I knew you

  619. to be a hard man,

  620. reaping where you

  621. did not sow

  622. and gathering

  623. where you scattered

  624. no seed.

  625. So I was afraid.

  626. And I went

  627. and hid your talent

  628. in the ground.

  629. Here,

  630. you have what is yours.

  631. But his master

  632. answered him,

  633. You wicked

  634. and slothful servant.

  635. You knew that I reap

  636. where I have not sown

  637. and gathered

  638. where I have scattered

  639. no seed.

  640. Then you ought

  641. to have invested

  642. my money with the bankers.

  643. And at my coming,

  644. I should have received

  645. what was mine

  646. with interest.

  647. So take the talent

  648. from him

  649. and give it to the one

  650. who has the ten talents.

  651. For to everyone

  652. who has,

  653. more will be given.

  654. And he will have

  655. an abundance.

  656. But from the one

  657. who has not,

  658. even what he has

  659. will be taken away.

  660. And cast the worthless

  661. servant

  662. into the outer darkness.

  663. In that place,

  664. there will be weeping

  665. and gnashing of teeth.

  666. Now I want you to note,

  667. the three servants

  668. received three different

  669. amounts of talent.

  670. Five, two, and one.

  671. Two servants were commended

  672. for being productive

  673. even though one

  674. was twice as productive

  675. as the other.

  676. They did not start out

  677. financially equally

  678. and they did not end up

  679. being equally,

  680. being financially equal.

  681. The one who had more

  682. at the beginning

  683. had even more

  684. at the end.

  685. More than the other guy.

  686. But they were both

  687. rewarded for their faithfulness,

  688. their productivity.

  689. The unfaithful servant

  690. was condemned

  691. for his laziness

  692. laziness

  693. and failure

  694. to be productive.

  695. No wealth

  696. was redistributed.

  697. In fact,

  698. what he had

  699. was taken from him

  700. because he was irresponsible.

  701. Jesus told a similar parable

  702. in Luke chapter 19,

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  703. the parable of the minas.

  704. A mina was about

  705. three months wages

  706. for a laborer.

  707. What I want us to do

  708. is look at Matthew 25,

  709. this parable of Talos.

  710. In light of R.C. Sproul's

  711. definition of socialism

  712. from last week.

  713. Look at it.

  714. Sproul said,

  715. socialism seeks

  716. as its premier goal

  717. the equality of wealth

  718. and equality of ownership

  719. within a society.

  720. To accomplish this,

  721. the government must be involved

  722. in the redistribution

  723. of wealth.

  724. That parable

  725. that Jesus told

  726. teaches the very opposite

  727. of what socialism seeks.

  728. There was no intent

  729. in Jesus' story

  730. to bring about

  731. equality of wealth

  732. or ownership.

  733. There was no intent

  734. to redistribute wealth.

  735. Jesus, in fact,

  736. commends those

  737. who are productive

  738. with what they have,

  739. even though their production

  740. is not the same.

  741. And Jesus rewards

  742. each

  743. who are productive

  744. because of their faithfulness.

  745. Not because of their equality,

  746. but because of their faithfulness.

  747. Now,

  748. we're going to come back

  749. next week

  750. and look at some

  751. of the many warnings

  752. found throughout the Bible

  753. about the dangers

  754. of money

  755. and prosperity.

  756. We've got to do that.

  757. We cannot ignore the fact

  758. that money and prosperity

  759. has ruined many people.

  760. Many Christians

  761. have pursued wealth

  762. and as a result

  763. moved away

  764. from their commitment

  765. to the Lord.

  766. So,

  767. while the Bible talks about

  768. it is right and good,

  769. proper,

  770. according to God's design,

  771. to work,

  772. to accumulate things,

  773. accumulate wealth,

  774. wisely manage it.

  775. But at the same time,

  776. there are warning

  777. after warning.

  778. It can be dangerous.

  779. Money can be dangerous.

  780. And wealth

  781. in and of itself

  782. is not something,

  783. it's not a worthy pursuit

  784. for God's people.

  785. But socialists

  786. are wrong

  787. to blanketly condemn

  788. private ownership,

  789. individual productivity,

  790. and the accumulation

  791. of wealth.

  792. That's the point

  793. this morning.

  794. Wayne Grudem

  795. rightfully describes

  796. the value of work,

  797. productivity,

  798. and the enjoyment

  799. of the fruit of our labor.

  800. One of these final points,

  801. look with me.

  802. He says,

  803. the system of personal

  804. ownership of property

  805. that is affirmed

  806. throughout Scripture

  807. is essential

  808. for human flourishing.

  809. Because without the ability

  810. to own and enjoy

  811. something of the fruit

  812. of his labor,

  813. a person will have

  814. little motivation

  815. to create

  816. and produce.

  817. You think about it.

  818. If you work

  819. and you're productive

  820. and you are rewarded

  821. justly, rightly,

  822. you accumulate wealth,

  823. but then the government

  824. starts intervening

  825. and taxes everything

  826. you make,

  827. prevents you

  828. from accumulating wealth,

  829. are you going to continue

  830. to work like you have?

  831. Are you going to continue

  832. to work

  833. to give it all away

  834. so it can be redistributed

  835. to people who don't work?

  836. No.

  837. You wouldn't.

  838. It would not be wise

  839. to do that.

  840. Look at what he says

  841. at the end.

  842. We glorify God

  843. by understanding

  844. and ruling

  845. over the creation,

  846. then by producing

  847. more and more

  848. wonderful goods

  849. from it

  850. for our enjoyment

  851. with thanksgiving

  852. to the God

  853. who richly provides us

  854. with everything

  855. to enjoy.

  856. Let's close it out

  857. like this.

  858. Are you seeking

  859. to glorify God

  860. by your productive work?

  861. Or,

  862. are you seeking

  863. to glorify yourself

  864. with your hard,

  865. productive work?

  866. Are you enjoying

  867. the fruits of your labor

  868. and acknowledging it

  869. as one of God's

  870. good gifts?

  871. Or,

  872. are you enjoying

  873. the fruit of your labor

  874. with no thought

  875. that it's a gift

  876. from God?

  877. Are you giving thanks

  878. to God

  879. as the source

  880. of everything

  881. that you have?

  882. Or,

  883. are you patting yourself

  884. on the back

  885. because of what you

  886. have earned,

  887. achieved,

  888. been able to do?

  889. I want us to close

  890. with an important word

  891. about wealth

  892. in 1 Timothy 6.

  893. Paul writes,

  894. as for the rich

  895. in this present age,

  896. charge them

  897. not to be haughty

  898. nor to set their hopes

  899. on the uncertainty

  900. of riches,

  901. but on God

  902. who richly provides us

  903. with everything

  904. to enjoy.

  905. You see the balance

  906. of Paul's statement?

  907. As for the rich

  908. of this present age,

  909. charge them

  910. not to be haughty

  911. because it's easy

  912. to become prideful

  913. if you become wealthy.

  914. Nor to set their hopes

  915. on the uncertainty

  916. of riches.

  917. We forget about

  918. the uncertainty

  919. of riches.

  920. But set our hopes

  921. on God

  922. and think about this,

  923. who richly provides us

  924. with everything

  925. to enjoy.

  926. They are to do so

  927. to be rich

  928. in good works,

  929. to be generous

  930. and ready

  931. to share,

  932. thus storing up

  933. treasure for themselves

  934. as a good foundation

  935. for the future

  936. so that they might

  937. take hold

  938. of that

  939. which is truly

  940. life.

  941. It is good

  942. for us

  943. to work

  944. and save

  945. and have something

  946. for the future,

  947. for the rainy day,

  948. for retirement.

  949. But it's even

  950. more important

  951. that we be storing

  952. up treasures

  953. in heaven

  954. through our

  955. faithfulness

  956. to God

  957. with what He

  958. has given us

  959. in every way,

  960. time, talents

  961. and treasures.

  962. And you know

  963. there's going to

  964. come a day

  965. for most of us

  966. if we live long enough

  967. we're going to want

  968. to lay hold

  969. of that

  970. which we have

  971. saved,

  972. invested.

  973. We're going to

  974. lay hold of

  975. retirement funds

  976. hopefully.

  977. A retirement life

  978. maybe.

  979. But what's

  980. most important

  981. is that we

  982. be prepared

  983. to take hold

  984. of that

  985. which is truly

  986. life,

  987. eternal life.

  988. And that only

  989. comes through

  990. a right relationship

  991. with Jesus Christ.

  992. It's vitally

  993. important in this

  994. day and time

  995. living in this

  996. country that we

  997. understand that

  998. socialism

  999. is contrary

  1000. to the teaching

  1001. of the Bible.

  1002. It's unethical.

  1003. It's immoral.

  1004. But at the same

  1005. time

  1006. we must not

  1007. make the focus

  1008. of our life

  1009. acquiring,

  1010. possessing,

  1011. owning

  1012. anything.

  1013. The goal of our

  1014. life is to glorify

  1015. God,

  1016. to serve His

  1017. purpose,

  1018. enjoy His

  1019. blessings,

  1020. thanks.

  1021. But to walk

  1022. with Him,

  1023. to walk with

  1024. Christ,

  1025. as Mainline was

  1026. singing,

  1027. step by step

  1028. through faith

  1029. with Jesus,

  1030. through this

  1031. world,

  1032. that's the only

  1033. way we'll be

  1034. ready to enter

  1035. the next world,

  1036. as Paul says,

  1037. which is truly

  1038. life.

  1039. Let's pray

  1040. together.

  1041. Father,

  1042. show us

  1043. now how

  1044. we need to

  1045. respond to

  1046. You in light

  1047. of what You

  1048. said to us.

  1049. Father,

  1050. help us to

  1051. understand

  1052. that working,

  1053. being responsible,

  1054. being productive

  1055. is the way You

  1056. created us to be.

  1057. Help us to see

  1058. that being

  1059. rewarded for

  1060. faithfulness is

  1061. also a part of

  1062. Your design,

  1063. and we

  1064. shouldn't feel

  1065. guilty.

  1066. We shouldn't be

  1067. made to feel

  1068. guilty.

  1069. Lord,

  1070. help us to

  1071. make sure

  1072. that our

  1073. work,

  1074. our accumulating,

  1075. our wealth

  1076. has taken

  1077. place for

  1078. the right

  1079. reason and

  1080. in the right

  1081. way.

  1082. If it

  1083. hasn't,

  1084. help us to

  1085. confess that

  1086. as the

  1087. sin that

  1088. it is

  1089. and turn

  1090. from it.

  1091. Help us

  1092. to make

  1093. sure,

  1094. dear God,

  1095. that Jesus

  1096. is the

  1097. Lord of

  1098. our life,

  1099. not money

  1100. or not

  1101. things.

  1102. And

  1103. Father,

  1104. if there's

  1105. anyone in

  1106. this room

  1107. who does

  1108. not know

  1109. Christ as

  1110. their Lord

  1111. and Savior,

  1112. call them

  1113. now to

  1114. turn from

  1115. their sin

  1116. to trust

  1117. Jesus as

  1118. absolute

  1119. Lord,

  1120. boss,

  1121. owner of

  1122. their life.

  1123. that's

  1124. just in

  1125. an attitude

  1126. of prayer

  1127. to listen

  1128. to the

  1129. Lord and

  1130. respond to

  1131. him personally.

  1132. Just make

  1133. this a time

  1134. of commitment,

  1135. recommitment,

  1136. whatever it is

  1137. you need

  1138. right now.

  1139. Thank you.
