  1. Brother Fred, thank you for your kind invitation.

  2. I don't get a lot of invitation to come back a second time,

  3. so I'm very grateful for that.

  4. As we prepare our hearts this morning to look together at God's Word,

  5. would you join me as we pray?

  6. Heavenly Father, thank you for just the privilege

  7. every time we're able to gather as a body of believers

  8. to join our hearts in worship,

  9. to be reminded that none of us would be here today

  10. were it not for your amazing grace.

  11. And Father, out of that awareness,

  12. I pray today that we just present ourselves before you

  13. in humility and Lord, in all emptying of self

  14. to just sit before your Word today.

  15. And we pray that your Holy Spirit would be the one who teaches us this morning.

  16. And I pray that this Word that we hold in our hands this morning,

  17. paper and ink, this written Word.

  18. Lord, I pray that it will now become a living Word in our hearts today.

  19. Speak to us.

  20. May we be good stewards of every moment you give us.

  21. In this time together, it's the prayer that we pray in Jesus' name.

  22. Amen.

  23. Amen.

  24. He was considered by many to be the fastest man in the world.

  25. They called him the Flying Scotchman.

  26. He was 22 years old.

  27. And in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, France,

  28. Eric Little was to have competed in the 100-meter dash.

  29. Again, he was the fastest man at that particular race,

  30. fully expected to win the gold medal.

  31. But Eric Little was also a Christian.

  32. He was a strong believer.

  33. And just a few days before the 100-meter dash was to have been run,

  34. he discovered that the qualifying heats for that event

  35. were going to be held on a Sunday.

  36. And Eric Little had strong convictions about the Lord's Day.

  37. And he determined if those qualifying heats were going to be run on a Sunday,

  38. he could not participate.

  39. Now, as you might imagine, a great uproar followed that decision.

  40. The Olympic Committee in that day got together,

  41. held an emergency meeting,

  42. called Eric Little in and said,

  43. Look, man, everybody's eyes are on you.

  44. You've got to run this race.

  45. Race, he said, No, I can't do it.

  46. He was summoned to a personal meeting with the Prince of Wales

  47. who had come to watch that race

  48. and was told again,

  49. Eric, we need you to run.

  50. He said, I cannot run.

  51. Finally, Eric Little received a telegram

  52. from the Prime Minister of Great Britain,

  53. giving him an ultimatum, in essence.

  54. Eric, you don't have a choice.

  55. You have got to compete in this race.

  56. But he stood firm.

  57. He did not run.

  58. And many people looked at Eric Little and said,

  59. What a waste.

  60. You have given up fame.

  61. You have probably given up fortune.

  62. You have certainly given up the gold medal,

  63. which everyone realizes you could have won.

  64. And yet, this young man at 24 years of age

  65. determined that nothing was more important in his life

  66. than his relationship with Jesus Christ.

  67. And he would not do anything that he considered

  68. would compromise his stance for Jesus Christ.

  69. So he did not run that race.

  70. He did not win that gold medal.

  71. But his commitment and his conviction stirred a generation.

  72. And many people looked at what Eric Little did

  73. and were moved to follow Christ

  74. and this young man's example.

  75. This morning, I want to ask you a question.

  76. Where are the radicals for Jesus Christ today?

  77. Where are they?

  78. Where are those who would stand up today and say,

  79. I boldly proclaim that there is nothing in my life

  80. more precious to me

  81. than my relationship with Christ,

  82. than living for His glory.

  83. And I want to ask you this morning,

  84. just right out of the gate,

  85. would you be willing

  86. to be that kind of person?

  87. I don't know any day

  88. there has ever been when we need more

  89. Eric Littles

  90. who will stand up

  91. with conviction

  92. and proclaim

  93. my life

  94. belongs

  95. to Christ

  96. fully,

  97. finally,

  98. forever.

  99. I have given

  100. my life

  101. to Him.

  102. Today,

  103. I

  104. I sort of want to get in your face a little bit.

  105. Is that okay?

  106. Just get in your face a little bit

  107. this morning

  108. and try to give you something to live for.

  109. I want to give you something to live for

  110. because I am convinced

  111. every one of us,

  112. you this morning,

  113. are standing

  114. on the precipice

  115. of a great adventure,

  116. if you will take it.

  117. And I don't want you to waste

  118. your lives

  119. in

  120. a valley of insignificance.

  121. I do not want you to fall prey

  122. to what I have called

  123. the mind-numbing,

  124. spiritual,

  125. anesthetizing,

  126. destiny-dimming

  127. enticement

  128. of the American dream

  129. that simply says to you

  130. and me today,

  131. if you'll just

  132. get a good education,

  133. if you'll get a good job,

  134. if you'll raise a good family,

  135. if you'll live a good life,

  136. then you'll have a good time

  137. and your life

  138. will be a good life.

  139. Can I tell you this morning

  140. unhesitatingly,

  141. you were created

  142. for something more than that.

  143. In fact,

  144. you were created

  145. for a whole lot more

  146. than that.

  147. So I want to say to you this morning,

  148. whether you're a student

  149. with the majority of your life

  150. ahead of you,

  151. or whether you've already retired

  152. and trying to figure out

  153. how you can make the most

  154. of your final years,

  155. I want to point you

  156. to something this morning.

  157. So I want you to take

  158. your copy of God's Word

  159. as you have it there with you,

  160. or maybe you're going to

  161. look this up on your phone

  162. or some other device.

  163. I want you to look with me

  164. at a couple of verses

  165. in 1 Corinthians 6.

  166. Let me just say to you,

  167. if we really understand

  168. what these verses say,

  169. they may be

  170. some of the scariest,

  171. most intimidating verses

  172. in all of

  173. the New Testament.

  174. But we're going to look at them anyway.

  175. 1 Corinthians 6,

    1 Corinthians 6:19

  176. verses 19 and 20.

  177. 1 Corinthians 6,

  178. 19 and 20,

  179. parts of these verses.

  180. I want you to listen to what

  181. Paul,

  182. under the inspiration

  183. of the Holy Spirit,

  184. writes to you and to me.

  185. Now,

  186. you belong

  187. to God.

  188. You do not belong

  189. to yourselves.

  190. God has bought you

  191. with a great price.

  192. Hear that again.

  193. Now,

  194. you belong

  195. to God.

  196. You do not belong

  197. to yourselves.

  198. Why?

  199. Because God has bought you

  200. with a great price.

  201. Do you understand

  202. this morning?

  203. If you are a Christian,

  204. if you would stand here

  205. and dare

  206. to name the name of Jesus

  207. as Lord and Savior

  208. of your life,

  209. do you understand

  210. you are not your own?

  211. You do not belong

  212. to yourself.

  213. It is not

  214. your life.

  215. Christ bought you.

  216. He bought me

  217. at the price

  218. of His own death

  219. so that now

  220. we doubly

  221. belong to God.

  222. We belong to God,

  223. number one,

  224. because He created

  225. every single one of us.

  226. And then if we are believers,

  227. we belong to God

  228. because Christ

  229. purchased us.

  230. He purchased

  231. our salvation

  232. at the price

  233. of His death

  234. on the cross.

  235. And that means

  236. my life

  237. is no longer

  238. my life

  239. to do with

  240. however I want

  241. to do with it.

  242. Your life

  243. is not your life

  244. to do whatever

  245. you want

  246. to do

  247. with it.

  248. I've heard people

  249. say before,

  250. you know,

  251. you grow up in America,

  252. you can become

  253. anything you want to be.

  254. Can we stop

  255. telling our kids

  256. that lie

  257. if we are followers

  258. of Christ?

  259. Christ.

  260. You can become

  261. anything God

  262. wants you to become.

  263. You can do

  264. anything

  265. God

  266. wants you to do

  267. because your life

  268. is not your own

  269. to do with

  270. what you want

  271. to do with

  272. and neither is mine.

  273. We're not free

  274. to chart our own course,

  275. pursue our own desires,

  276. chase our own dreams.

  277. Restricting, huh?

  278. A little bit.

  279. Boxes you in,

  280. doesn't it?

  281. Cramps your style,

  282. infringes on your freedom,

  283. right?

  284. I mean,

  285. that's what the world

  286. will tell us.

  287. That's what it told

  288. Eric Little.

  289. But this morning,

  290. can we look for just a moment

  291. at what God's Word

  292. really has to say

  293. about this?

  294. And I want to illustrate

  295. this 1 Corinthians

  296. text in several ways.

  297. First of all,

  298. I want to illustrate it

  299. by looking at the life

  300. of a man in Scripture.

  301. His name was Epaphroditus.

  302. We find his story

  303. in Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  304. So,

  305. I encourage you to mark

  306. 1 Corinthians chapter 6,

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  307. but

  308. turn over

  309. into the New Testament.

  310. A few books here.

  311. To Philippians.

  312. And we're going to look

  313. for just a moment

  314. at Epaphroditus.

  315. Now,

  316. this is the only place

  317. in Scripture

  318. we find Epaphroditus

  319. mentioned,

  320. but he is

  321. memorialized here.

  322. He is

  323. ensconced

  324. because of what we see

  325. about him

  326. in this text.

  327. Now,

  328. before we look at the verses

  329. describing his life

  330. a little bit,

  331. let me give you

  332. a little bit of a background

  333. to this book

  334. of Philippians.

  335. Epaphroditus

  336. was a member

  337. of the church

  338. at Philippi.

  339. the Philippian church

  340. had heard that Paul

  341. was in prison

  342. in Rome.

  343. That's where Paul was

  344. when he wrote

  345. the book

  346. of Philippians.

  347. And so,

  348. the church at Philippi

  349. determined that it

  350. would come together,

  351. it would take up

  352. a collection,

  353. an offering,

  354. and they would send it

  355. to Paul

  356. in Rome,

  357. and Epaphroditus

  358. was the one

  359. who was given

  360. the task

  361. to take that gift

  362. to Paul in Rome.

  363. As a matter of fact,

  364. we might say

  365. that the book

  366. of Philippians

  367. is sort of

  368. Paul's extended

  369. thank you letter

  370. to the church

  371. at Philippi

  372. for the sending

  373. of this gift

  374. to him

  375. in prison

  376. in Rome.

  377. So,

  378. Epaphroditus

  379. is tasked

  380. with this responsibility.

  381. He is taking

  382. this gift

  383. from the Philippian church

  384. to Rome

  385. somewhere on the journey

  386. from Philippi

  387. to Rome

  388. or perhaps

  389. after he got

  390. to Rome,

  391. we don't really know.

  392. but Epaphroditus

  393. became seriously ill.

  394. We don't know

  395. what the illness

  396. was that he had,

  397. but if you look

  398. at verse 27,

  399. you will see

  400. of Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  401. you will see

  402. that it was serious

  403. enough

  404. that the man

  405. almost died.

  406. And so,

  407. the Philippian church

  408. was concerned

  409. about Epaphroditus.

  410. Somehow,

  411. they had gotten word

  412. that he was

  413. at the point of death.

  414. So,

  415. after he recovers

  416. a little bit,

  417. Paul says in verse 28,

  418. I'm going to send

  419. Epaphroditus back to you

  420. so that he can be with you,

  421. he can be with his family,

  422. he can be with his church family,

  423. and can recover.

  424. So,

  425. that's the background.

  426. What I want you to see here,

  427. the verses,

  428. verses 29 and 30,

  429. because this tells us something

  430. of Epaphroditus

  431. that is really the focus

  432. of what I'm trying

  433. to help all of us

  434. come to terms with today.

  435. Verse 29,

  436. Paul says,

  437. as he sends Epaphroditus back,

  438. so receive him in the Lord

  439. with all joy

  440. and honor such men

  441. for he nearly died

  442. for the work of Christ,

  443. risking his life

  444. to complete what was lacking

  445. in your service to me.

  446. Now,

  447. there's a little key phrase here

  448. that Paul uses

  449. to describe Epaphroditus.

  450. He says,

  451. he risked his life.

  452. He risked his life.

  453. Now,

  454. in the common language

  455. of the people in Paul's day,

  456. that little phrase,

  457. risking his life,

  458. was borrowed from

  459. the gambling world.

  460. It was a gambler's term.

  461. It meant to place a bet.

  462. It meant to make a wager.

  463. It meant to roll the dice.

  464. Literally,

  465. Paul said,

  466. let me tell you

  467. about Epaphroditus.

  468. He was willing

  469. to gamble

  470. his own life

  471. for the sake

  472. of Christ.

  473. He threw himself

  474. out there

  475. on the game board

  476. of life.

  477. He rolled the dice

  478. with his life

  479. and he literally

  480. risked

  481. losing it all

  482. to do what Christ

  483. had called him

  484. to do.

  485. Epaphroditus

  486. was God's

  487. gambler.

  488. And he gambled

  489. everything

  490. because he placed

  491. his very life

  492. on the line

  493. to do what Christ

  494. had called him

  495. to do.

  496. I want to tell you

  497. about one of my favorite

  498. historical

  499. Christian

  500. characters.

  501. characters.

  502. Her name was

  503. Ann Hazeltine.

  504. She was the youngest

  505. of five children

  506. and she was doted

  507. on by her family.

  508. She had a wonderfully

  509. happy childhood

  510. and by her teenage

  511. years she was

  512. sparkling,

  513. full of joy,

  514. popular,

  515. very attractive,

  516. always in demand

  517. at parties

  518. and all kinds

  519. of social events.

  520. in her youth.

  521. Her main concerns

  522. were her friends,

  523. socializing,

  524. having fun.

  525. Her father

  526. actually constructed

  527. on the back

  528. of their house

  529. a dance hall,

  530. a big room

  531. that was used

  532. just for dancing

  533. so Ann's home

  534. really became

  535. the center

  536. of social life

  537. in the town

  538. where they lived.

  539. Now like most

  540. of the people

  541. who lived in that

  542. small town,

  543. the Hazeltines

  544. went to church.

  545. But religion was,

  546. it just wasn't

  547. very demanding

  548. at all.

  549. Didn't require

  550. much of them

  551. and most of their

  552. time was spent

  553. just doing

  554. what they wanted

  555. to do,

  556. having fun,

  557. being with friends.

  558. So in Ann's own

  559. words she said,

  560. you know,

  561. I was consumed

  562. with the things

  563. of the world.

  564. Even though I profess

  565. to follow Christ,

  566. I know my focus

  567. was on the things

  568. of the world,

  569. having fun.

  570. I was largely

  571. directed by peer pressure.

  572. And so I want

  573. to read a few things

  574. to you this morning

  575. that come from

  576. her diary.

  577. And I'm just going

  578. to read it off

  579. this sheet of paper

  580. because I want you

  581. to hear verbatim

  582. what Ann wrote

  583. about her understanding

  584. of Christianity

  585. at this young point

  586. in her life.

  587. Here's what she said,

  588. quote,

  589. During the first

  590. 16 years of my life,

  591. I very seldom

  592. felt any serious

  593. impressions about

  594. anything.

  595. I was early taught

  596. by my mother,

  597. though at that time

  598. she was ignorant

  599. of the nature

  600. of true religion.

  601. I was taught

  602. by her the importance

  603. of abstaining

  604. from those vices

  605. like telling falsehoods,

  606. disobeying my parents,

  607. taking what was

  608. not my own.

  609. She also taught me

  610. that if I was

  611. a good child,

  612. when I died,

  613. I would escape

  614. that dreadful place

  615. called hell,

  616. the thought of which

  617. sometimes filled me

  618. with alarm and terror.

  619. So,

  620. I therefore made it

  621. a matter of conscience

  622. to avoid

  623. these kinds of sins.

  624. I'd say my prayer

  625. every night

  626. and every morning.

  627. I would try not

  628. to do the things

  629. that I knew were wrong,

  630. never doubting

  631. that such a course

  632. of conduct

  633. would ensure

  634. my salvation.

  635. At the age of 12 or 13,

  636. I attended the academy

  637. where suddenly

  638. as I was exposed

  639. to many more temptations

  640. than ever before.

  641. I now began to go

  642. to dances and parties.

  643. I found my mind

  644. completely occupied

  645. with the things

  646. of the world.

  647. And for two or three years,

  648. I scarcely felt

  649. an anxious thought

  650. at all relative

  651. to the salvation

  652. of my own soul.

  653. Even though,

  654. now listen,

  655. even though,

  656. I was rapidly heading

  657. towards eternal ruin.

  658. I was surrounded

  659. by my friends

  660. who were wild

  661. and volatile

  662. like myself.

  663. And I often thought

  664. myself,

  665. one of the happiest

  666. people on earth.

  667. My time mostly occupied

  668. with clothes,

  669. boys,

  670. and an amusement.

  671. That was her life.

  672. That was her own assessment

  673. of her life

  674. at 16 years of age.

  675. Now,

  676. she went on to say

  677. that from time to time

  678. she would sort of be

  679. convicted about things

  680. in her life.

  681. She knew she was doing things

  682. she had no business doing,

  683. involved with people

  684. she shouldn't have been with.

  685. But because of peer pressure

  686. and her desire

  687. to be popular,

  688. she said,

  689. you know,

  690. I was just,

  691. it was too embarrassing

  692. for me to try

  693. to take a stand

  694. for Christ

  695. or to really get

  696. too serious

  697. about spiritual things

  698. or try to be godly.

  699. But then,

  700. as a 17-year-old girl,

  701. Anne Hazeltine

  702. had a personal,

  703. powerful encounter

  704. with Jesus Christ

  705. that radically

  706. changed her life.

  707. Suddenly,

  708. she was overwhelmed

  709. with a sense

  710. of her own guilt

  711. before this holy

  712. and righteous God.

  713. she said,

  714. I suddenly became

  715. aware of His majesty,

  716. His holiness,

  717. His greatness,

  718. the grace

  719. that He had extended

  720. to me.

  721. And I became overwhelmed

  722. with my own sinfulness

  723. and suddenly

  724. I just had this

  725. consuming desire

  726. for my life

  727. to bring glory to God.

  728. So at 17 years of age,

  729. she set out

  730. to live her life

  731. in complete commitment

  732. to the Lord.

  733. And she said,

  734. Lord, here it is,

  735. whatever you want to do.

  736. She said,

  737. what Epaphroditus said,

  738. here's my life,

  739. I roll it out there.

  740. Let me tell you

  741. what happened.

  742. Anne Hazeltine

  743. eventually married

  744. a man

  745. by the name of

  746. Adoniram Judson.

  747. I don't know

  748. if that name means

  749. anything to you or not.

  750. If you know anything

  751. about mission history

  752. whatsoever.

  753. Adoniram Judson

  754. was one of the first

  755. Protestant missionaries

  756. sent out from North America

  757. to the non-Christian world.

  758. He was one of the

  759. great missionary pioneers.

  760. And so,

  761. Anne ended up

  762. getting to know

  763. Judson

  764. and they decided

  765. to get married.

  766. Let me read a part

  767. of a letter to you now

  768. that Adoniram Judson

  769. wrote to Anne Hazeltine's

  770. father

  771. asking for her hand

  772. in marriage

  773. and also asking

  774. permission to take Anne

  775. with him

  776. as a missionary

  777. to India.

  778. Now, if you're a father

  779. out there with a daughter,

  780. I want you to listen to the...

  781. It ought to impact

  782. every one of us,

  783. but I want you to listen

  784. to what Adoniram Judson

  785. wrote to Anne Hazeltine's

  786. father.

  787. I have to ask you now

  788. whether you can consent

  789. to part with your daughter

  790. early next spring

  791. to see her

  792. never again

  793. in this world.

  794. Whether you can consent

  795. to her departure,

  796. her subjection

  797. to the hardships

  798. and sufferings

  799. of missionary life,

  800. whether you can consent

  801. to her exposure

  802. to the dangers

  803. of the ocean,

  804. to the fatal influence

  805. of the southern climate

  806. of India,

  807. to every kind

  808. of want

  809. and distress,

  810. to degradation,

  811. insult,

  812. persecution,

  813. perhaps even

  814. a violent death.

  815. Can you consent

  816. to all this

  817. for the sake

  818. of Him

  819. who left

  820. His heavenly home

  821. and died for her

  822. and for you?

  823. Can you do this

  824. for the sake

  825. of perishing

  826. immortal souls,

  827. for the sake

  828. of heaven,

  829. for the sake

  830. of the glory of God?

  831. Can you consent

  832. to all this

  833. in the hope

  834. of soon meeting

  835. your daughter again,

  836. not in this world,

  837. but in the world

  838. of glory

  839. with the crown

  840. of righteousness

  841. brightened

  842. with the acclamations

  843. of praise

  844. that shall resound

  845. from her Savior,

  846. from those

  847. heathen people

  848. saved through

  849. her testimony

  850. from eternal woe

  851. and despair?

  852. What questions?

  853. Her father said

  854. what I would have

  855. probably said.

  856. I can't do that,

  857. but I will let her

  858. make up her decision.

  859. Anne said yes.

  860. I will go.

  861. And Anne

  862. and Adoniram Judson

  863. went to India.

  864. There they lost

  865. three of their children.

  866. Adoniram himself

  867. was thrown

  868. into a Burmese prison

  869. where he languished

  870. for two years.

  871. Anne herself

  872. at 37 years

  873. of age

  874. died in Burma.

  875. Her body

  876. wracked by pain,

  877. ravaged

  878. by tropical illnesses,

  879. emaciated

  880. from lack

  881. of proper food,

  882. beaten down

  883. by the struggles

  884. of pioneer missionary life

  885. just as her husband

  886. Ad predicted

  887. would happen.

  888. But Anne

  889. helped to translate

  890. the books

  891. of Daniel

  892. and Jonah

  893. into the Burmese language,

  894. the gospel

  895. of Matthew

  896. into the Thai language,

  897. so that

  898. multiplied thousands

  899. of Burmese

  900. and Thai

  901. people

  902. could come

  903. to know the Christ

  904. that she knew.

  905. She rolled

  906. the dice.

  907. She gambled

  908. her life.

  909. She said,

  910. Lord,

  911. there is nothing

  912. more precious

  913. to me

  914. than living

  915. for your glory.

  916. I do not

  917. belong to myself.

  918. You have bought

  919. me with a great

  920. price.

  921. I throw myself

  922. out.

  923. You use me

  924. however you want

  925. to use me.

  926. Now here's

  927. the question.

  928. Is that

  929. something you

  930. have ever

  931. seriously

  932. seriously

  933. in your

  934. entire life

  935. considered

  936. doing?

  937. Would you

  938. be

  939. an Anne

  940. Hazeltine

  941. for this

  942. generation?

  943. Would you

  944. be an

  945. Epaphroditus

  946. for this

  947. day?

  948. Would you

  949. consider that

  950. God may have

  951. brought you

  952. into His

  953. kingdom

  954. for such

  955. a time

  956. as this?

  957. Would you

  958. be an

  959. Eric Little

  960. for this

  961. generation?

  962. Can I

  963. say to you

  964. this morning

  965. that I

  966. believe

  967. Christianity

  968. has largely

  969. lost its

  970. teeth

  971. in America?

  972. There is

  973. no risk.

  974. we play

  975. it safe.

  976. We know

  977. exactly what

  978. we're going

  979. to do

  980. each and

  981. every day

  982. that we

  983. live.

  984. We're not

  985. throwing

  986. ourselves

  987. out there

  988. for the

  989. sake of

  990. Christ.

  991. There is

  992. no challenge.

  993. There is

  994. no costly

  995. commitment.

  996. There is

  997. no great

  998. courage.

  999. There is

  1000. no great

  1001. cause

  1002. that we

  1003. consider

  1004. worth

  1005. this kind

  1006. of price.

  1007. There is

  1008. very little

  1009. in our

  1010. culture

  1011. or in

  1012. the church

  1013. of Jesus

  1014. Christ

  1015. today

  1016. that is

  1017. driving

  1018. us

  1019. to be

  1020. all that

  1021. this word

  1022. says we

  1023. ought to

  1024. be.

  1025. So can I

  1026. just be a

  1027. voice today?

  1028. Maybe it is a

  1029. voice crying in

  1030. the wilderness.

  1031. I do not know,

  1032. but could I say,

1033. could I throw out to

  1034. you this morning

  1035. this possibility?

  1036. Would you

  1037. embrace being

  1038. everything that

  1039. this word says

  1040. Christ

  1041. created and

  1042. bought you

  1043. to be?

  1044. Would you

  1045. hear me say

  1046. to you,

  1047. don't waste

  1048. these few

  1049. precious years,

  1050. this tiny

  1051. increment of

  1052. time that

  1053. God has

  1054. entrusted

  1055. to you.

  1056. Don't

  1057. waste

  1058. your life.

  1059. Now listen,

  1060. I understand

  1061. this morning,

  1062. I'm not

  1063. naive,

  1064. and I

  1065. understand this

  1066. morning that

  1067. from the

  1068. perspective and

  1069. the values and

  1070. the priorities of

  1071. this world,

  1072. what looks like a

  1073. waste is to

  1074. give yourself to

  1075. Christ in this

  1076. kind of way.

  1077. That's what looks

  1078. like a waste in

  1079. the eyes of the

  1080. world.

  1081. It looks stupid,

  1082. tragic.

  1083. It's a waste

  1084. because becoming a

  1085. follower of Christ

  1086. means sacrifice.

  1087. It calls us to

  1088. embrace suffering.

  1089. It tells us we're

  1090. going to face

  1091. persecution and

  1092. loss in this

  1093. world.

  1094. Over and over

  1095. and over again in

  1096. the New Testament

  1097. we see that.

  1098. If anyone would

  1099. come after me,

  1100. Jesus said,

  1101. let him deny

  1102. himself.

  1103. Say a big fat

  1104. no to your own

  1105. life.

  1106. Let him deny

  1107. himself, then

  1108. take up a cross.

  1109. That's not the

  1110. shiny little

  1111. emblem we wear

  1112. around our necks.

  1113. It was a Roman

  1114. execution device.

  1115. That's what

  1116. everybody understood

  1117. when Jesus said,

  1118. if you want to

  1119. follow me, be

  1120. ready to take up

  1121. a cross.

  1122. Be ready to give

  1123. everything that you

  1124. have even in your

  1125. own life if you

  1126. want to follow me.

  1127. That's what

  1128. Jesus said.

  1129. He has called

  1130. us to a life

  1131. in the eyes of

  1132. the world of

  1133. a seemingly

  1134. pointless denial

  1135. of many of the

  1136. things we think

  1137. make our short

  1138. lives here on

  1139. earth tolerable.

  1140. He calls us to

  1141. walk a path that

  1142. leads in the

  1143. opposite direction

  1144. that everybody

  1145. else is going

  1146. in.

  1147. I'm going to

  1148. tell you,

  1149. identifying with

  1150. Christ, risking

  1151. your life in this

  1152. kind of way can

  1153. involve the loss

  1154. of reputation,

  1155. it can involve

  1156. the loss of

  1157. intellectual

  1158. respectability,

  1159. it can include

  1160. the loss of

  1161. status according

  1162. to the world's

  1163. version of wisdom

  1164. and honor.

  1165. Looks like a

  1166. waste of life.

  1167. But it's really

  1168. the very opposite.

  1169. Jesus said if you

  1170. want to gain your

  1171. life, lose it.

  1172. I'll tell you how

  1173. to lose it.

1174. Try to hang on to

  1175. your life.

1176. Try to do it your

  1177. way.

  1178. You'll lose your

  1179. life.

  1180. You'll come to the

  1181. end of your life

  1182. and you'll look

  1183. back and you'll

1184. have a pot full of

  1185. regrets and you'll

  1186. yearn for what

  1187. might have been in

  1188. your service to the

  1189. Lord Jesus Christ and

  1190. how he might have

  1191. taken your life and

  1192. used it as a

  1193. vehicle for his

  1194. glory.

  1195. You know what?

  1196. I didn't finish the

  1197. story about Eric

  1198. Little.

1199. Let me go back to

  1200. that.

  1201. After Eric Little

  1202. decided he would

  1203. not run in the

  1204. 100 meter dash

  1205. because of his

  1206. convictions about

  1207. running on a

  1208. Sunday, a

  1209. teammate of his on

  1210. the British Olympic

1211. team, a man by the

  1212. name of Harold

  1213. Abrams came up to

  1214. him and said,

  1215. Eric, I'd be

  1216. willing to switch

  1217. events with you.

  1218. I run the 400

  1219. meter race.

  1220. Why don't I run

  1221. that and you run

  1222. the 100?

  1223. And I'll run the

  1224. 100.

  1225. See, Harold

  1226. Abrams was a

  1227. Jewish man.

  1228. And so he didn't

  1229. have any convictions

  1230. about running on a

  1231. Sunday.

  1232. It wasn't a big deal

  1233. to him.

  1234. Problem was, Eric

  1235. Little had never

  1236. trained to run the

  1237. 400 meters.

  1238. 100 meter was more

  1239. of a sprint.

  1240. The 400 meter was a

  1241. long distance race.

  1242. He just hadn't

  1243. trained for that.

  1244. Had never run that

  1245. race before.

  1246. Inexperienced.

  1247. But hey, the

  1248. opportunity was there

  1249. and he took it.

  1250. And so they switched

  1251. events.

  1252. Before Eric Little

  1253. got ready to run

  1254. that 400 meter race,

  1255. another athlete from

  1256. the American Olympic

  1257. team, who was also

  1258. a Christian, and who

  1259. also understood the

  1260. kind of sacrifice that

  1261. Eric Little had made,

1262. came up to him right

  1263. before he started that

1264. race and handed him a

  1265. little piece of paper

1266. paper and on it was

  1267. scribbled a short

  1268. note.

  1269. You know what it

  1270. said?

  1271. God honors those who

  1272. honor him.

  1273. Do you believe that?

  1274. God honors those who

  1275. honor him.

  1276. Eric Little not only

1277. won the 400 meter and

  1278. gained that gold medal,

  1279. but he set a world's

  1280. record.

  1281. That stood for a

  1282. decade.

  1283. And he became a

  1284. national hero.

  1285. Everybody wanted to

  1286. be around Eric Little.

  1287. They revered him in

  1288. Great Britain.

  1289. He could have had

  1290. anything that he

  1291. wanted.

  1292. He could have yelled

1293. jump and all of Great

  1294. Britain would have said,

  1295. okay, how high?

1296. That's the status that he

  1297. held after winning that

  1298. 400 meter.

  1299. But exactly one year

  1300. after winning that gold

  1301. medal, Eric Little walked

  1302. away from everything to

  1303. become a missionary with

  1304. the London Missionary

  1305. Society.

1306. And he went to China.

1307. And he carried the gospel

1308. of Jesus Christ to the

1309. back country of that great

  1310. nation.

  1311. about that time, Japan

  1312. invaded China.

  1313. Second World War broke

  1314. out.

  1315. Eric Little was captured

  1316. by the Japanese,

1317. declared to be an enemy

  1318. national, thrown into a

  1319. prison camp.

1320. There he was one of 1,300

  1321. prisoners crammed into an

1322. area maybe a little bit

  1323. bigger than this worship

  1324. area.

  1325. Housed in dormitories

1326. three feet by six feet.

  1327. He was beaten.

  1328. He was starved.

  1329. He was denied adequate

  1330. medical care.

  1331. He was physically abused

  1332. and mentally abused.

  1333. But still, he held

  1334. athletic competitions.

  1335. He taught hymns.

1336. And he shared the gospel of

1337. Jesus Christ with his fellow

  1338. prisoners and with his

  1339. Japanese captors.

1340. Just one month before the

  1341. liberation of China,

  1342. February 21, 1945,

1343. Eric Little died in that

  1344. prisoner of war camp.

  1345. Largely unknown.

  1346. Was it a waste?

1347. Well, it would have been a

  1348. waste.

1349. In fact, let me just be

  1350. honest with you.

  1351. Everything I've shared with

1352. you this morning would be

1353. a waste if what the Bible

1354. has to say about Jesus

  1355. Christ is not true.

1356. If what is in this book is

1357. not true, then yes, it is

  1358. all a waste.

1359. But if what is in this book

1360. is true, if Jesus Christ is

1361. the very Son of God who in

1362. love for you and me willingly

1363. set aside the glory and the

  1364. status that was His,

1365. with His heavenly Father in

1366. heaven, if He took on the

  1367. full measure of our

1368. weakness and was born into

1369. the human family, if He lived

1370. a life of perfect obedience

1371. to His Father's will, if He

1372. died a sinless death on the

1373. cross to pay the penalty for

1374. your sin and my sin, if He

1375. rose from the dead, if He

1376. ascended to the Father, if

1377. today He really is the Savior

1378. of all who trust in Him, if one

1379. day He is going to return to

1380. this earth and receive His

1381. people to Himself and assume

1382. His rightful role as judge over

1383. all the earth, King of kings

1384. and Lord of lords, if what this

1385. book has to say about Christ is

1386. true and it is true, then my

1387. friend, there is no price in the

1388. world that is too great to pay for

  1389. Him.

1390. There is no loss in the terms of

1391. what is valuable in the eyes of

1392. the world, no loss too much to

  1393. endure for Him.

1394. Before Anne Hazeltine left the

1395. shores of America to sail for

1396. India and Burma where she died,

1397. this is what she had to say.

1398. I'll close with these final words

  1399. from her diary.

1400. I have at length come to the

1401. conclusion that I must spend my

1402. days in a foreign land, but I am a

1403. creature of God and He has an

1404. undoubted right to do with me as

1405. seems good in His sight.

1406. I rejoice because I am in His hands

1407. and when I am called to face

1408. danger, to pass through scenes of

1409. terror and distress, He will

  1410. inspire me with fortitude.

1411. He will enable me to trust in Him

  1412. because Jesus is faithful.

  1413. His promises are precious.

1414. Were it not for these

1415. considerations, I should sink down in

1416. the depths of despair, especially as

1417. no female has to my knowledge ever

1418. left the shores of America to spend

1419. her life among the heathen in this

1420. way, nor do I yet know that I shall

1421. have a single female companion where

  1422. I'm going.

1423. But whether I spend my days in India

1424. or America, I will spend them in the

1425. service of my God and my Savior and

1426. look forward to spending an eternity in

  1427. His presence.

1428. Folks, this is hard for us to hear.

1429. But this is not a higher life.

1430. This is not a deeper life.

  1431. This is normal Christianity.

  1432. Normal Christianity.

1433. It seems radical to us because we have

1434. departed so far from what Christ calls us to be

1435. and do in this book.

1436. So because it seems radical to us, I will

1437. ask the question, where are the radicals for

  1438. Jesus Christ today?

1439. Who would rise up and say nothing, nothing,

1440. nothing in my life is more precious to me

1441. than Christ, than living for His glory?

1442. Will you be one of those?

  1443. Wow.

1444. Do we need some Ann Hazeltines today?

1445. Do we need some Eric Littles today?

1446. Do we need some more folks who in the spirit of

1447. Epaphroditus would say, Lord, here's my life

1448. and I will roll the dice, not knowing what all that

1449. means, but here is my life today.

1450. I give you all of me for the sake of multiplied

1451. billions of people who are dying every day

1452. without knowing this Savior that we know.

1453. Would you be that kind of person for this generation?

1454. Isaac Watts wrote a famous hymn,

1455. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.

1456. And in the closing stanza of that verse,

1457. he captured exactly the truth of Scripture.

1458. And I share these words with you in closing this morning.

1459. Isaac Watts said, were the whole realm of nature mine.

1460. If I had everything a person could possibly have,

1461. were the whole realm of nature mine,

1462. that would be a present far too small.

1463. Love so amazing, so divine,

  1464. demands my soul,

  1465. my life,

  1466. my all.

  1467. Pray with me.

  1468. Heavenly Father,

  1469. we stand this morning

  1470. underneath

1471. the authority of your word

1472. and the truth that it proclaims.

1473. And I pray in these moments,

  1474. Father,

1475. now that we have heard,

  1476. we might recognize

  1477. our accountability to you

1478. for what you have entrusted to us

1479. through the pages of your word.

  1480. And Lord,

1481. through that great cloud of witnesses,

1482. those who have gone on before us,

  1483. like Epaphroditus,

  1484. like Eric Little,

  1485. like Anne Hazeltine,

  1486. who now from

  1487. the grandstands of heaven

  1488. cheer us on.

  1489. But even these examples

  1490. pale in comparison

  1491. to the example

  1492. of our Lord Jesus,

1493. who for the joy that was set before Him,

  1494. endured the cross,

  1495. scorning its shame,

1496. who took on human form

  1497. and human flesh

1498. and came and dwelt among us,

  1499. leaving the glory

1500. and the splendor of heaven behind.

1501. who took on human form

  1502. and human flesh

1503. and being made in human likeness

1504. and being made in appearance as a man,

1505. taking on the form of a servant.

  1506. He humbled Himself.

  1507. He poured Himself out

1508. and He became obedient unto death,

1509. even death on the cross.

1510. That is our ultimate example.

1511. That is the one to whom we give our lives.

  1512. And so, Father,

  1513. I pray this morning

  1514. that as we prepare

1515. in just a couple of minutes

  1516. to walk out

1517. the doors of this building,

1518. that we would not walk out

1519. the same way we walked in.

1520. That we would be Your gamblers.

1521. That we would make the wager,

  1522. place the bet,

1523. roll the dice with our own lives

  1524. and just say,

  1525. Lord, here we are.

1526. We roll ourselves out before You.

1527. Our lives are not our own.

  1528. We have been bought

  1529. with a great price.

1530. Now take us and use us

1531. to make a difference here

  1532. in Pickens, South Carolina,

1533. in a nation that desperately

  1534. needs to know

  1535. the difference

1536. that only Jesus Christ can make

  1537. and among the nations

1538. is the prayer that we pray

  1539. in Jesus' name.

  1540. Amen.

  1541. Amen.
