  1. If you ever watched a hard-fought athletic contest

  2. where the players just went all out,

  3. did all they could, put forth their best efforts,

  4. and after the game, one of them said,

  5. we left it all on the field,

  6. or we left it all on the court.

  7. That was their way of describing

  8. how they held nothing back.

  9. They gave everything they had to win the game.

  10. They gave it their best effort.

  11. Well, that is how the Apostle Paul lived his life

  12. and in different words summed it up as he approached death.

  13. Paul basically said, we're going to read the passage,

  14. but he basically said, I left it all on the field of life.

  15. I put forth my very best effort to be faithful to God

  16. and fulfill his purpose for my life.

  17. Look at how he actually said it

  18. in 2 Timothy chapter 4, verses 6 through 8.

    2 Timothy 4:6–8

  19. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering,

  20. and the time of my departure has come.

  21. I have fought the good fight.

  22. I have finished the race.

  23. I have kept the faith.

  24. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness,

  25. which the Lord, the righteous judge,

  26. will award to me on that day,

  27. and not only to me, but also to all who have loved his appearing.

  28. New Testament scholars spend a lot of time

  29. doing things like reading Paul's letters,

  30. reading what Luke says about him in the book of Acts,

  31. and trying to figure out a timeline of his life.

  32. And most of them really believe that Paul wrote 2 Timothy,

  33. this second letter to Timothy, his son in the ministry,

  34. that this was his last letter,

  35. and that he was waiting in a Roman prison cell to be executed.

  36. Now some of you are familiar with the life of Paul

  37. and how he at one point was under house arrest in Rome.

  38. The book of Acts ends with him.

  39. He's under house arrest in Rome.

  40. He's chained to a Roman soldier at all times,

  41. but he has a lot of freedom,

  42. and friends and other people can come and talk with him.

  43. He got to teach.

  44. And it was during that imprisonment,

  45. with all that freedom,

  46. that he wrote the New Testament letters of Ephesians,

  47. Colossians, Philippians, and Philemon.

  48. Now this is not in the Bible,

  49. but tradition says that Paul was released

  50. after he appealed to Caesar that day,

  51. or at that first imprisonment,

  52. and that he did go to Spain.

  53. He's talked about that at the end of his letter to the Romans.

  54. He wanted to go to Spain and preach.

  55. He wanted to take the gospel to the western part of the Roman world

  56. because he'd always been working in the eastern part.

  57. Well, tradition tells us that he went to Spain

  58. and he came back,

  59. and in Rome this time,

  60. under a time of great persecution,

  61. he was put in a real prison,

  62. dungeon-lock prison.

  63. And it's from this prison

  64. that he dictated his last letter,

  65. his letter to Timothy,

  66. and he made this statement.

  67. It sounds like a final summary of his life, doesn't it?

  68. He knows it's coming to an end.

  69. I want you to note in that first verse six,

  70. he describes his approaching death

  71. as something that has already begun.

  72. Look at it.

  73. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering.

  74. Paul's really talking about how he has poured out his life.

  75. His energy, like wine,

  76. was poured out in certain Old Testament ceremonies.

  77. In some of those ceremonies,

  78. when the wine was poured out,

  79. the entire container was emptied.

  80. Nothing was left.

  81. That's how Paul's thinking.

  82. He's thinking about how his life has been poured out

  83. in service to God and to thousands of people.

  84. And it's about to be emptied.

  85. He's going to die.

  86. That's his way of saying,

  87. he left nothing on the field.

  88. He put forth his very best effort

  89. to serve God and fulfill the mission that God gave him.

  90. Two weeks ago,

  91. Alan McQuiet was here and he preached a message

  92. that challenged us to be totally committed.

  93. He gave some examples of men and women

  94. who just sold out to the Lord,

  95. poured out their lives,

  96. spent their life.

  97. And the challenge to us was,

  98. we need to be totally committed.

  99. We don't have to be missionaries.

  100. We don't have to leave pickings.

  101. We don't have to change jobs.

  102. But total commitment is what God calls all of us to.

  103. Last week, I followed up that message with this.

  104. Don't waste your life.

  105. Don't just fritter away life.

  106. Just go in with the flow.

  107. Just whatever happens, happens.

  108. Today, I want to challenge everyone,

  109. beginning with me,

  110. to live our lives in such a way

  111. that when we face death,

  112. we can truthfully say,

  113. I left it all on the field of life.

  114. I held nothing back when it came to putting forth

  115. my best effort to serve the Lord,

  116. to develop Christian character,

  117. to truly live the life that God called me to live.

  118. By God's grace,

  119. we need to be able to say,

  120. when all is said and done,

  121. I put forth my best effort

  122. to honor the Lord

  123. and do His will.

  124. I want us to look at this passage

  125. you see on the screen

  126. and look at that as an example

  127. of what it takes to be able to say that.

  128. Look first.

  129. Giving our best to the Lord

  130. requires discipline.

  131. Discipline is a word

  132. that a lot of people don't like.

  133. Discipline is a word

  134. that a lot of people avoid.

  135. But I want you to look at how Paul

  136. described his life in service to God

  137. in verse 7.

  138. I have fought the good fight.

  139. Note two things about Paul's service.

  140. The value he placed on it.

  141. He said it was the good fight.

  142. The word good could be translated excellent

  143. or even noble.

  144. Paul considered his service to God

  145. to be something of great value.

  146. He considered giving his life

  147. and doing God's will

  148. to be a great, noble cause.

  149. He didn't think he was wasting his life.

  150. Paul spent a lot of time

  151. being opposed, being mistreated.

  152. He spent several years in prison.

  153. Paul lived the kind of life

  154. that no one would choose.

  155. No one in their right mind

  156. would want to live the kind of life

  157. and be subject to all the mistreatment

  158. that he endured.

  159. But he considered that his calling.

  160. That was just the price

  161. that it took for him to be faithful.

  162. He didn't think he was wasting his life.

  163. It was something of value.

  164. It was good.

  165. It was a noble pursuit.

  166. Now look at the next thing.

  167. The effort he put forth.

  168. He says he fought.

  169. I fought.

  170. This refers to great effort,

  171. a struggle, a fight.

  172. Living a faithful Christian life

  173. is not easy.

  174. I want you to understand that.

  175. If anybody ever tells you

  176. just give your life to the Lord,

  177. put your trust in Jesus,

  178. and all will be well,

  179. either they're just misinformed

  180. or they're lying to you.

  181. Nowhere in Scripture

  182. do you find it said

  183. that living the life

  184. that would please God

  185. will be simple,

  186. will be easy.

  187. It's a fight.

  188. It is a struggle.

  189. It's a struggle spiritually at times.

  190. It's a struggle emotionally at times.

  191. It is a struggle physically sometimes.

  192. That's why Paul liked to use,

  193. and other writers,

  194. like the writers of the Hebrews,

  195. they like to use images of athletes.

  196. Paul liked to talk about runners.

  197. The writer of the Hebrews did.

  198. Paul, at the end of chapter 9 of Romans,

  199. talks about boxers even,

  200. wrestlers,

  201. everyone in Paul's day and in ours.

  202. We understand that Olympic-type athletes

  203. make all kinds of sacrifices

  204. to make the Olympic team,

  205. to go to the games,

  206. to run for the medal,

  207. I mean, think about it.

  208. They train for hours every day,

  209. eat only healthy food,

  210. and avoid anything

  211. that would be a hindrance

  212. or distraction

  213. to their efforts,

  214. listen to this,

  215. to win a medal.

  216. But we know in our day,

  217. you win a medal,

  218. you win enough of them,

  219. you win fame,

  220. you win fortune,

  221. you win a lot.

  222. Well, Paul said what he said

  223. to encourage us,

  224. make sacrifices,

  225. whatever sacrifices are necessary,

  226. to be victorious

  227. in faithful Christian living.

  228. Now what I'm talking about here is

  229. we need to put forth the effort

  230. to discipline ourselves,

  231. to be faithful,

  232. to develop Christian character,

  233. to treat people the way

  234. that we should

  235. in our homes.

  236. And that's the hardest place

  237. to do it,

  238. to really love one another,

  239. demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit,

  240. love and joy and peace

  241. and patience

  242. and kindness,

  243. self-control.

  244. But also at work,

  245. do you discipline yourself,

  246. do you put forth the effort

  247. to really be

  248. the man or woman

  249. or young person of God

  250. that you profess to be?

  251. Now if you're here,

  252. you're a church member,

  253. you've professed faith,

  254. you claim to be a Christian,

  255. are you putting forth the effort

  256. to actually live that way

  257. in front of the people

  258. that are in your home and family,

  259. that you actually work with,

  260. interact with,

  261. some of them you're around

  262. more than your family.

  263. Are you doing that

  264. with your classmates

  265. even though

  266. some of them are not Christians?

  267. Some of them may make fun of you,

  268. may leave you out.

  269. Are you putting forth the effort

  270. to be victorious

  271. in Christian service?

  272. I'm talking about

  273. actually using the gifts

  274. that God's given you

  275. in some aspect

  276. of the life of our church.

  277. You know,

  278. Paul challenged Timothy like this

  279. in his first letter to him.

  280. He said,

  281. train yourself,

  282. which can also be translated,

  283. discipline yourself

  284. to be godly.

  285. You've got to work at

  286. the Spirit of God's working in you,

  287. but you've got to cooperate.

  288. You've got to work at

  289. developing godly character.

  290. It's not going to just happen.

  291. Life is such

  292. that we're going to be ungodly.

  293. Life is such

  294. that we're just going to be selfish.

  295. Some of us,

  296. by temperament,

  297. are going to be mean.

  298. We're going to be sarcastic.

  299. We're not going to serve anyone.

  300. We're going to try

  301. to just be served ourselves.

  302. We've got to fight

  303. the good fight of faith.

  304. That's what he told him as well.

  305. Now,

  306. don't misunderstand

  307. any of this as teaching

  308. that salvation is something

  309. that we must work for.

  310. We can't.

  311. We don't deserve it.

  312. We cannot earn it.

  313. Salvation is truly a gift

  314. of God's grace

  315. that we can only receive

  316. by faith

  317. in Jesus Christ.

  318. Jesus did earn

  319. our salvation.

  320. Salvation is costly.

  321. Jesus gave his life

  322. when he died on the cross

  323. as our substitute

  324. to take the punishment

  325. that we really deserve,

  326. the wrath of God.

  327. He died on the cross

  328. to pay the penalty

  329. for your sins

  330. if you're a Christian.

  331. He lived a perfect,

  332. righteous life,

  333. fulfilled the law of God

  334. and God credits

  335. that to you

  336. if you are a true believer.

  337. So Jesus earned our salvation.

  338. We didn't.

  339. We receive it as a gift

  340. of God's grace.

  341. But then

  342. some people have the idea,

  343. well, yeah,

  344. you're saved

  345. by trusting in Jesus.

  346. But from that point on,

  347. you've got to work.

  348. Maybe some people think

  349. to keep it.

  350. Or you've got to work

  351. to develop as a Christian.

  352. Here's how we need to think.

  353. God graciously works in our lives

  354. to save us

  355. and God graciously works in our lives

  356. to enable us

  357. to continue to trust in Jesus

  358. and to become more like Him.

  359. And here's how God does it

  360. by giving us

  361. those kind of desires

  362. and then enabling us

  363. to put forth the effort

  364. to discipline ourselves

  365. and develop godly character.

  366. The best statement of that

  367. in the Bible

  368. that I'm aware of,

  369. and I put it on the screen

  370. from time to time,

  371. and if I could find a way

  372. to put it up there

  373. every week,

  374. I would.

  375. This is vitally important.

  376. Look at this.

  377. Therefore, my beloved,

  378. as you have always obeyed,

  379. so now,

  380. not only in my presence,

  381. but much more in my absence,

  382. work out your own salvation.

  383. Develop it.

  384. Grow with fear and trembling,

  385. for it is God who works in you

  386. both to will,

  387. He gives you the will,

  388. the desire,

  389. and to work to do it,

  390. to discipline yourself

  391. for His good pleasure.

  392. God does that

  393. through His Holy Spirit

  394. who lives within us.

  395. Now,

  396. let's think about

  397. how we are

  398. doing these things.

  399. How would you describe

  400. your effort

  401. when it comes to living,

  402. I'm talking about

  403. really living like a Christian,

  404. every day

  405. from the time you get up

  406. in the morning

  407. until you go to bed at night.

  408. Now,

  409. none of us

  410. have arrived

  411. and just truly

  412. walk with the Lord

  413. from the time we get up

  414. until we go to bed.

  415. But let's think about

  416. some specifics.

  417. Are you training yourself

  418. to be godly

  419. by spending time

  420. with the Lord

  421. every day

  422. in His Word

  423. and prayer?

  424. That takes discipline.

  425. our lives are busy.

  426. Some of you

  427. get up at 5 or 5.30.

  428. You have to get up

  429. that early

  430. to get ready

  431. to eat breakfast,

  432. to be at work

  433. at the time

  434. you've got to be there.

  435. Some of you work

  436. long hours,

  437. 8, 10, 12 hours a day.

  438. You come home,

  439. you are tired.

  440. You've got to rest.

  441. You've got to unwind

  442. before you can actually

  443. go to bed.

  444. It is vitally important

  445. that we find a way

  446. to spend time

  447. with the Lord

  448. some kind of time

  449. in His Word

  450. listening to Him

  451. and in prayer

  452. talking to Him

  453. as well as listening to Him.

  454. I want to encourage you.

  455. Discipline yourself.

  456. Find a way,

  457. a time,

  458. a place

  459. to spend time

  460. with the Lord

  461. because that is something

  462. that every single Christian

  463. must do

  464. and continue to do

  465. being with the Lord

  466. in order to stay close to Him,

  467. in order to learn

  468. how to please Him,

  469. in order to be able

  470. to overcome

  471. sinful habits

  472. in our lives.

  473. We need that.

  474. Are you training yourself

  475. to be godly

  476. by spending time

  477. with the Lord

  478. in His Word

  479. and in prayer

  480. every day

  481. or at least

  482. on a very regular basis

  483. which I can't say

  484. I couldn't be every day.

  485. Ask God to show you

  486. a way

  487. and it's going to take discipline.

  488. It won't be easy.

  489. Number two,

  490. are you fighting

  491. the good fight

  492. to be morally clean

  493. and pure

  494. in your thought life,

  495. in the things you talk about

  496. and in what you do?

  497. You know,

  498. we live

  499. in a culture today,

  500. we are bombarded

  501. everywhere

  502. with all kinds

  503. of impure,

  504. lust-provoking

  505. images,

  506. aren't we?

  507. I mean,

  508. in print,

  509. on TV,

  510. all over the internet.

  511. Everything is marketed

  512. in a sexually

  513. suggestive way.

  514. If you read much

  515. of what's going on

  516. in the world,

  517. people today

  518. just talk filthy

  519. from our president

  520. on down.

  521. That is not acceptable

  522. from anyone.

  523. But when we hear it

  524. all the time,

  525. when it's just

  526. the common lingo,

  527. it is very easy

  528. to pick it up,

  529. to use it,

  530. and to think

  531. it's okay.

  532. God calls us

  533. to live

  534. morally pure

  535. lives,

  536. to be

  537. clean.

  538. He wants us

  539. to be that way

  540. in the way

  541. that we think,

  542. in our conversations,

  543. as well as

  544. in the way we live.

  545. That's not easy

  546. to do today.

  547. It's not easy

  548. for me.

  549. It's not easy

  550. for you.

  551. If you're a real

  552. human being,

  553. we've got to

  554. fight

  555. to guard

  556. our minds,

  557. our words,

  558. and our actions.

  559. Discipline

  560. your mind.

  561. Number three,

  562. are you putting

  563. forth the effort

  564. to intentionally

  565. do your job

  566. or schoolwork

  567. as if you're

  568. doing it

  569. for the Lord?

  570. Paul talked

  571. about that

  572. in Colossians.

  573. It hasn't been

  574. long since we

  575. looked at that

  576. in detail.

  577. We're supposed

  578. to do what

  579. we do

  580. as if we were

  581. doing it

  582. for the Lord.

  583. And that,

  584. what I want to say

  585. is,

  586. that doesn't mean

  587. something real

  588. spiritual.

  589. We're supposed

  590. to do our,

  591. as Christians,

  592. we should be the

  593. best at our jobs

  594. that we can

  595. possibly be.

  596. that helps us

  597. to have sort of

  598. a platform

  599. from which

  600. to talk about

  601. the things of

  602. God

  603. and be a witness.

  604. Don't be like

  605. the young man

  606. that I worked

  607. with many years

  608. ago.

  609. We worked in a

  610. plant.

  611. There's a lot

  612. of machinery.

  613. Those,

  614. every one of those

  615. machines needed

  616. to be oiled

  617. on a regular

  618. basis.

  619. This young fellow,

  620. 20 years old,

  621. committed Christian,

  622. loved the Lord,

  623. and wanted to

  624. witness all the

  625. time.

  626. But it was his

  627. job to oil

  628. those machines

  629. to go around

  630. this.

  631. It wasn't,

  632. maybe about this

  633. size.

  634. It was a little

  635. bit bigger than

  636. this.

  637. The section he

  638. had and a lot

  639. of different

  640. machines,

  641. grinding parts.

  642. You know what

  643. he did?

  644. He floated

  645. around that

  646. room,

  647. witnessing to

  648. everybody.

  649. All day,

  650. talking about

  651. the things of

  652. God and not

  653. oiling the

  654. machines.

  655. He lost all

  656. credibility.

  657. Most people

  658. despised him

  659. because he was

  660. preventing their

  661. machines from

  662. running at full

  663. capacity.

  664. Some of them

  665. sometimes would

  666. stop and they

  667. would come and

  668. cuss him out over

  669. his witnessing and

  670. drag him back to

  671. oil their

  672. machines.

  673. I say all that

  674. to say,

  675. at school,

  676. at work,

  677. the first way you

  678. are a witness is

  679. by the quality of

  680. your work.

  681. The attitude you

  682. demonstrate in

  683. your work.

  684. If you're not good

  685. at what you do,

  686. you are a bad

  687. witness.

  688. I want you to know

  689. that.

  690. If you're a sloppy

  691. employee, don't put

  692. forth much effort.

  693. They know you don't

  694. really care.

  695. Don't tell anybody

  696. you're a Christian,

  697. okay?

  698. Don't tell them

  699. you're a member of

  700. our church because

  701. you're a poor,

  702. poor witness.

  703. We, if we're

  704. serious about living

  705. the kind of life

  706. Paul did, Paul was

  707. a tent maker.

  708. And he supported

  709. himself a lot of the

  710. time.

  711. And I guarantee you

  712. the tents that Paul

  713. made would have been

  714. of high quality because

  715. he did everything to

  716. the glory of God.

  717. He was serious about

  718. living his faith, not

  719. just sharing it.

  720. Are you putting

  721. forth the best

  722. effort intentionally

  723. to be a good witness

  724. by the way you work,

  725. the quality of your

  726. work, your school

  727. work, as if you're

  728. doing it for the Lord?

  729. Number four, are you

  730. disciplining yourself to

  731. be sensitive to the

  732. Holy Spirit's presence

  733. in your life so that

  734. you'll be able to

  735. discern and obey his

  736. leading?

  737. Here's what I'm

  738. saying.

  739. If you're a Christian,

  740. the Spirit of God

  741. lives within you.

  742. And what we need to

  743. do is learn to be

  744. sensitive to his

  745. presence as he prompts

  746. us.

  747. Don't look at this.

  748. Don't dwell on this.

  749. Don't listen to this.

  750. Get off that website.

  751. Don't engage in that

  752. kind of conversation.

  753. As he prompts us,

  754. you ought to try to

  755. develop that relationship

  756. with that person so that

  757. you can share the gospel

  758. with him.

  759. So when he prompts us,

  760. you need to share the

  761. gospel.

  762. You need to ask that

  763. person about their

  764. relationship with the

  765. Lord.

  766. We need to be sensitive

  767. to his presence.

  768. He'll always guide us in

  769. a way that's consistent

  770. with what he says in the

  771. word.

  772. Never contrary.

  773. If we don't cultivate

  774. being aware of his

  775. presence, we won't hear

  776. him.

  777. We'll grieve him as the

  778. scripture talks about.

  779. I want to encourage you.

  780. Cultivate.

  781. Discipline yourself to be

  782. sensitive to the Holy

  783. Spirit's presence so you

  784. can be led by him.

  785. To do certain things,

  786. to not do other things.

  787. We're talking about

  788. living a Christian life.

  789. Now I want you to think,

  790. can you describe your

  791. service to God as

  792. fighting the good fight?

  793. Let me ask you a question.

  794. Might make some people

  795. uncomfortable.

  796. Are you serving God right

  797. now?

  798. Or are you just showing up

  799. at church every now and

  800. then?

  801. If you're not serving the

  802. Lord right now, I want to

  803. encourage you.

  804. He's given you gifts and

  805. talents and abilities that he

  806. expects you to use for his

  807. glory and other people's

  808. good.

  809. He expects you, if you're a

  810. member of this church, to use

  811. those gifts and talents and

  812. your time.

  813. If you're serving him, how

  814. do you value what you're

  815. doing?

  816. If you're already serving

  817. him, how much do you value

  818. what you're doing?

  819. Do you think about it in terms

  820. of, I'm doing a good work.

  821. I'm seeking to please God.

  822. I'm seeking to truly help other

  823. people.

  824. We need to be involved in

  825. serving the Lord, part of

  826. fighting the good fight, and

  827. that includes everyone.

  828. Just think about it this way.

  829. Aren't there some things that

  830. you do for people just because

  831. you love them?

  832. Aren't there things you do for

  833. your spouse, your children,

  834. your parents, a friend?

  835. Aren't there things that you

  836. do that you don't really like

  837. to do, you don't really want

  838. to do, but you do it because

  839. you love them?

  840. And because you love them, you

  841. do it with a good attitude.

  842. You want to meet that need.

  843. Well, that's what Paul did.

  844. Paul went to places to preach

  845. that he knew he was going to be

  846. opposed, maybe run out of town,

  847. and he was a lot of times,

  848. maybe imprisoned or even killed,

  849. but he knew, Paul knew, God has

  850. graciously saved me, forgiven me,

  851. made me his child.

  852. He has called me to this ministry

  853. of taking the gospel where it's

  854. never been before, and that's

  855. just going to cost me a lot.

  856. He also knew if he didn't go and

  857. preach, maybe thousands,

  858. of people would never hear the

  859. gospel, never be saved, spend

  860. eternity in hell.

  861. And that was another motivating

  862. factor in his life.

  863. He fought a good fight because of his

  864. love for God and his love and

  865. concern for people.

  866. That's the key to putting forth the

  867. effort to serve the Lord in any kind

  868. of ministry.

  869. I want to ask you, do you love

  870. Jesus?

  871. I'm not asking, do you believe in

  872. him?

  873. I'm asking you, do you truly love

  874. him?

  875. How do you demonstrate it?

  876. He wants us to serve him.

  877. He wants us to have a relationship

  878. with him.

  879. He wants us to be like him, but he

  880. wants us to serve him.

  881. He wants us to be intentional about

  882. doing it.

  883. I encourage you to do that.

  884. Living this kind of life requires

  885. discipline every day.

  886. Look at this.

  887. Giving our best to the Lord also

  888. requires perseverance.

  889. We've got to continue to do it.

  890. We've got to hang in there.

  891. Look at the second thing.

  892. I have finished the race.

  893. Now, don't worry.

  894. We're not going to get to the third

  895. part this morning.

  896. Paul's talking about how he's been

  897. faithful to the end.

  898. He's persevered.

  899. He is hung in there.

  900. That didn't just happen.

  901. Paul had a plan.

  902. When God saved him and called him,

  903. he planned to do whatever it took

  904. to be faithful to the very end.

  905. I want you to look at this statement

  906. he made in Acts chapter 20.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  907. However, I consider my life worth

  908. nothing to me.

  909. If only I may finish the race

  910. and complete the task

  911. the Lord Jesus has given me.

  912. The task of testifying to the gospel

  913. of God's grace.

  914. God's goal throughout his ministry

  915. was to be faithful.

  916. Complete the task the Lord Jesus

  917. had given to him

  918. no matter what.

  919. What about you?

  920. Are you planning

  921. to finish the race

  922. of Christian living?

  923. Sad truth is

  924. a lot of people aren't.

  925. A part of the

  926. finishing the race

  927. of Christian living

  928. for you

  929. where you are right now

  930. if you're married

  931. God wants you to be

  932. the best husband or wife

  933. you can be

  934. and live together

  935. in what Genesis calls

  936. a true one flesh relationship

  937. until death separates you.

  938. God wants you

  939. to disciple your children.

  940. Bring them up

  941. in the discipline

  942. and instruction of the Lord.

  943. There's certain things

  944. that's just a part

  945. of our lives as Christians

  946. that we need to be determined

  947. we're going to be faithful.

  948. We're not going to give up.

  949. We're going to hang in there.

  950. Are you?

  951. Do you have that determination?

  952. You know I don't think

  953. about it every day

  954. but when Lisa and I

  955. got married

  956. you know we made

  957. that same commitment

  958. everybody else makes

  959. on the wedding day

  960. but divorce

  961. has never entered my mind.

  962. I'm sure divorce

  963. has never entered

  964. Lisa's mind.

  965. Murder yes.

  966. Maiming injuring yes.

  967. She can come closer

  968. to killing me

  969. than divorcing me

  970. I truly believe.

  971. You see what I'm talking about.

  972. We've got to be committed.

  973. The sad truth

  974. when it comes to

  975. Christian living in general

  976. everybody doesn't

  977. finish the race.

  978. There were people

  979. in Paul's day

  980. professing Christians

  981. who just quit.

  982. Paul talks about one

  983. later on in this letter

  984. in verse 10

  985. one of his co-workers

  986. Demas

  987. look at it

  988. for Demas

  989. in love

  990. with this present world

  991. has deserted me

  992. and gone to Thessalonica.

  993. That happens

  994. in the church

  995. today.

  996. You can think of

  997. professing Christians

  998. who used to attend

  999. this church

  1000. but they don't anymore.

  1001. Some of them

  1002. just sort of

  1003. quit being active

  1004. and just show up

  1005. every now and then.

  1006. Some quit

  1007. altogether.

  1008. They certainly

  1009. wouldn't say

  1010. they abandoned

  1011. the faith

  1012. but

  1013. they don't show much.

  1014. And then some people

  1015. appear to have

  1016. just quit the faith.

  1017. Some people

  1018. who at once

  1019. professed to be

  1020. Christian

  1021. just turned their

  1022. back on the Lord

  1023. and in no way

  1024. do they show

  1025. any kind of evidence

  1026. of being Christian.

  1027. When you think

  1028. of people

  1029. who've quit

  1030. just walked away

  1031. from a real

  1032. commitment to the Lord

1033. dropped out of the race

1034. let it be a warning

  1035. to you.

  1036. Saving faith

  1037. is

  1038. continuing faith.

  1039. When God

  1040. starts something

  1041. in us

  1042. He brings it

  1043. to completion.

1044. I want you to look

  1045. at three verses

  1046. that strongly

  1047. emphasizes

  1048. continuing faith.

  1049. And it says

  1050. in Colossians 1

  1051. and you

  1052. who once were

  1053. alienated

  1054. hostile in mind

  1055. and doing evil

  1056. deeds

  1057. He is now

  1058. reconciled

  1059. in His body

  1060. of flesh

  1061. by His death

  1062. in order to present

  1063. you holy

  1064. and blameless

  1065. and above reproach

  1066. before Him.

  1067. Look at this.

  1068. If indeed

  1069. you continue

  1070. in the faith

  1071. He's not going

  1072. to present us

  1073. before the Father

  1074. holy and blameless

  1075. and above reproach

  1076. if we don't

  1077. continue

  1078. because if we

  1079. don't continue

  1080. we never were.

  1081. He says

  1082. if indeed

  1083. you continue

  1084. in the faith

  1085. stable and steadfast

  1086. not shifting

  1087. from the hope

  1088. of the gospel

  1089. that you heard

  1090. which has been

  1091. proclaimed

  1092. in all creation

  1093. under heaven

  1094. and of which

  1095. I, Paul

  1096. became a minister.

  1097. I know

  1098. you're sitting

  1099. in this room

  1100. right now

  1101. you're here

  1102. but are you

  1103. really continuing

  1104. in the faith

  1105. of trusting

  1106. loving

  1107. and following

  1108. Jesus?

  1109. That's the only

  1110. sign of a real

  1111. Christian.

  1112. Saving faith

  1113. is continuing faith

  1114. saving faith

  1115. is also

  1116. fruitful faith.

  1117. There's good works.

  1118. Look at Ephesians 2.10

1119. for we are his workmanship

  1120. created in Christ Jesus

  1121. for good works

  1122. which God prepared

  1123. beforehand

  1124. that we should

  1125. walk in them.

  1126. The first two verses

  1127. before that

  1128. says

1129. I forgot the verse now.

  1130. For by grace

  1131. you are saved

  1132. through faith

  1133. it's not of yourself

1134. it's the gift of God

  1135. it's not of works

1136. that no one should boast.

  1137. And then he says

  1138. to those

  1139. who are saved

1140. by the grace of God

  1141. through faith in Jesus

  1142. look at it.

1143. For we are his workmanship

  1144. some people

  1145. some translations say

  1146. his masterpiece

  1147. created in Christ Jesus

  1148. for good works

  1149. which God prepared

  1150. beforehand.

  1151. Are you doing

  1152. those good works?

  1153. God has prepared you

  1154. and he prepared you

  1155. by gifting you

  1156. enabling you

  1157. giving you

  1158. the whatwithal

  1159. to do it.

  1160. Are you doing

  1161. those good works?

  1162. And here's a simple

  1163. way to know

  1164. name them.

  1165. What are you doing?

  1166. Sitting around

  1167. looking pretty

1168. is not one of them.

  1169. Warming a seat

  1170. week after week

1171. is not one of them.

  1172. What good works

  1173. are you doing

  1174. in and through

  1175. the ministry

  1176. of this church

  1177. and where you work

  1178. and where you go

  1179. to school

  1180. wherever

  1181. what good works

  1182. are you doing

  1183. that shows

  1184. the reality

  1185. of your faith.

  1186. You know

  1187. all of us

  1188. struggle

  1189. to be faithful.

  1190. It's hard

  1191. to fight

  1192. the good fight

  1193. every day.

  1194. We may even

  1195. be tempted

  1196. to quit

  1197. at times.

  1198. That's why

  1199. Paul wrote

  1200. so many

  1201. warnings

  1202. and encouragements

  1203. in his letters

  1204. like this.

  1205. Look at this.

  1206. Let's not become

  1207. weary in doing good

1208. for at the proper time

  1209. we will reap

  1210. a harvest

  1211. if we do not

  1212. give up.

  1213. we can remain

  1214. faithful to the end.

  1215. We can persevere

  1216. because God

  1217. will enable us.

  1218. Look at this

  1219. real quickly.

  1220. God has promised

  1221. to never leave us

  1222. nor forsake us.

1223. I will never leave you

  1224. nor forsake you.

  1225. God's always

  1226. working in us

  1227. causing us to will

  1228. and to act

  1229. according to his

  1230. good purpose.

  1231. We've already

  1232. looked at that.

  1233. God will always

  1234. provide a way of

  1235. escape when

  1236. temptation comes.

  1237. If you give in

  1238. to temptation

  1239. if I give in

  1240. to temptation

  1241. it's because I want

  1242. to, because you

  1243. wanted to.

  1244. Yes.

  1245. Because look at

  1246. what the scripture

  1247. says.

  1248. No temptation

  1249. has seized you

  1250. except what is

  1251. common to man.

  1252. And God is

  1253. faithful.

  1254. He will not

  1255. let you be

  1256. tempted beyond

  1257. what you can

  1258. bear.

  1259. But when you

  1260. are tempted

  1261. he will provide

  1262. a way out

  1263. so that you

  1264. can stand up

  1265. under it.

  1266. That's why I

  1267. say when I

  1268. sin it's because

  1269. deep down

  1270. that's what I

  1271. wanted to do.

  1272. I refused

  1273. to take the

  1274. way of escape.

  1275. God is

  1276. never

  1277. will God be

  1278. faithful to

  1279. the very end

  1280. with us.

  1281. It's always

  1282. will we be

  1283. faithful to

  1284. the very end.

  1285. God will do

  1286. what he promises

  1287. to do.

  1288. but he also

  1289. requires that we

  1290. be committed,

  1291. that we be

  1292. disciplined,

  1293. that we hang in

  1294. there and not

  1295. give up,

  1296. that we

  1297. persevere.

  1298. I want to ask

  1299. you right now.

  1300. If your life,

  1301. you find out

  1302. it's going to

  1303. come to an end

  1304. within the next

  1305. few weeks or

  1306. months,

  1307. are you ready

  1308. to say with

  1309. Paul,

  1310. I have fought

  1311. the good fight,

  1312. I finished the

  1313. race,

  1314. I kept the

  1315. faith,

  1316. I left nothing

  1317. on the playing

  1318. field of life.

  1319. If you can't

  1320. say that,

  1321. talk to God

  1322. about it now.

  1323. Make the kind

  1324. of commitments

  1325. you need to

  1326. make.

  1327. If you're not

  1328. truly a Christian,

  1329. admit that to

  1330. God, even if

  1331. you are a church

  1332. member.

  1333. Turn from your

  1334. sin, put your

  1335. trust in him,

  1336. in Jesus Christ

  1337. and him alone.

  1338. Surrender your

  1339. life to him

  1340. now.

  1341. Let's pray

  1342. together.

  1343. Dear God,

  1344. help us to see

  1345. right now how

  1346. we need to

  1347. respond so that

  1348. we can have

  1349. the testimony

  1350. at the end

  1351. of our lives

  1352. whenever that

  1353. may be.

  1354. We left it

  1355. all on the

  1356. field.

  1357. We held

  1358. nothing back.

  1359. We gave our

  1360. all to

  1361. cooperating with

  1362. you in

  1363. developing

  1364. Christ-like

  1365. character.

  1366. We gave our

  1367. all in serving

  1368. you with our

  1369. time, talents,

  1370. and treasures.

  1371. I encourage

  1372. everybody in

  1373. this room to

  1374. listen to the

  1375. Lord about what

  1376. you need to

  1377. do.

  1378. Then respond to

  1379. him in

  1380. obedience.

  1381. Take this time

  1382. to do that.

  1383. As we bow

  1384. together,

  1385. instruments

  1386. playing, we're

  1387. just going to

  1388. talk to and

  1389. listen to God.
