  1. My name is Rudy Gray, and I'm the sorriest member of First Baptist Pickings.

  2. I have done four interims since we've been here.

  3. Then we went through COVID, and when we were isolated,

  4. a couple of our grandkids would spend the night with us on Saturday night,

  5. and we would go upstairs and have family worship.

  6. You might call it the variety hour,

  7. because I would have children's sermons that I'd had over the years,

  8. some of them on flannel graph.

  9. They would sit down, and one would pray, and one would read Scripture,

  10. and I'd play the saxophone.

  11. Yeah, that's funny.

  12. It really is because I'm a perpetual beginner.

  13. After we got through with that, we'd give the sermon,

  14. and we'd have prayer, and then they're good to go.

  15. But those were such special times for us

  16. because the family worship like that, it just meant a lot to us,

  17. especially with our grandkids during that time.

  18. Well, this morning I want to talk to you about something

  19. that's especially important to the church, to a Christian.

  20. Forty years I've prepared messages,

  21. and if you've prepared messages for 40 years,

  22. and somebody calls you and says,

  23. hey, would you preach for me?

  24. Then you say, oh, sure, because, you know,

  25. I've got these filing cabinets full of sermons,

  26. and I just pull out a folder and say,

  27. now that's one of my sweet ones.

  28. That's one of my special ones.

  29. I'll pull that out and preach.

  30. But several weeks ago I developed a brand new sermon.

  31. I never preached it before.

  32. First time I preached it was a few weeks ago

  33. at Mount Moriah Baptist,

  34. and I'm going to be there next Sunday.

  35. Their pastor has COVID.

  36. Seven or eight people in their church have it,

  37. and I'm going to preach to an empty auditorium

  38. with just the praise team,

  39. just me and the praise team

  40. and whoever's operating the camera.

  41. So pray with us about that.

  42. But if you have your Bibles,

  43. turn with me to Mark chapter eight.

  44. When I prepared this message,

  45. three words captured my attention.

  46. I want to say that God gave them to me.

  47. I want to say that God moved on my heart,

  48. but if you find that it's no good,

  49. then you'll know it was all my own doing.

  50. But it was the word follow, point one,

  51. the word follower, point two,

  52. and the word followed, point three.

  53. So I want you to look in Mark chapter eight, verse 34.

  54. And he summoned the crowd with his disciples

  55. and said to them,

  56. if anyone wishes to come after me,

  57. he must deny himself,

  58. take up his cross and follow me.

  59. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,

  60. but whoever loses his life for my sake

  61. and the gospels will save it.

  62. For what does it profit a man

  63. to gain the whole world

  64. and forfeit his soul?

  65. In an article entitled,

  66. The Disciple Driven Church,

  67. the writer made this observation.

  68. The church growth movement has failed.

  69. The church planning movement has failed.

  70. The decline in attendance

  71. in evangelical churches continues.

  72. He further observed this.

  73. The church has gone from a movement

  74. that required the total commitment

  75. of its members to the point of death

  76. to one that literally begs

  77. for anyone to enter its doors.

  78. The church in America

  79. is not transforming society,

  80. but culture is transforming us.

  81. The great British theologian,

  82. John R. W. Stott said,

  83. God is not pleased

  84. with superficial discipleship.

  85. And Romans 12, 2 says,

  86. don't be conformed to this world,

  87. but be transformed

  88. by the renewing of your mind.

  89. A disciple is a learner,

  90. a follower,

  91. a lifelong person

  92. committed to Jesus Christ.

  93. And when churches do not make disciples,

  94. we invariably end up

  95. proclaiming a cheap grace.

  96. We cannot do discipleship.

  97. We cannot be disciples

  98. unless we're born again

  99. and we continue to focus

  100. and follow Jesus Christ.

  101. He's our leader.

  102. He's the head of the church.

  103. He's the Lord of our lives.

  104. He's our hope.

  105. He's our God.

  106. And he is the greatest servant leader

  107. that ever lived.

  108. Plato, if you remember,

  109. if you're into the Greek philosophers,

  110. Plato had a disciple

  111. whose name was Aristotle.

  112. And when Rome conquered Greece,

  113. the philosophy of Aristotle,

  114. because Aristotle had disciples,

  115. the philosophy of Aristotle,

  116. which goes back to Plato,

  117. permeated the Roman Empire

  118. so much so

  119. that even though Greece was conquered,

  120. then Rome was Hellenized

  121. by the nation they conquered.

  122. Why?

  123. Because Plato had a disciple

  124. and Aristotle had disciples.

  125. Disciples of Jesus Christ

  126. should be making

  127. a more profound difference

  128. in the world

  129. than the philosophy

  130. of Plato and Aristotle

  131. in the Roman Empire.

  132. We follow the King of Kings

  133. and Lord of Lords.

  134. I want you to look first

  135. at this word

  136. that I mentioned before.

  137. The first point is follow.

  138. It's what every disciple of Jesus

  139. is called to do.

  140. And the word follow,

  141. when we look at the meaning

  142. of the word

  143. and we get into it,

  144. the word follow

  145. means to chase

  146. or pursue.

  147. So we are to chase

  148. and pursue after

  149. Jesus and His truth.

  150. It's something

  151. that requires commitment

  152. and focus

  153. in order to do.

  154. Jesus said,

  155. here's how you do it.

  156. It's not like He said,

  157. do this,

  158. love me,

  159. follow me,

  160. and He didn't tell us how.

  161. He specifically said,

  162. this is what you have to do

  163. to be a follower of mine.

  164. I want you to look in the text.

  165. In Mark 8 and verse 34,

  166. the first one is self-denial.

  167. Absolute and complete commitment.

  168. A life of self-centeredness,

  169. a life of selfishness,

  170. a life of self-focus,

  171. self-fulfillment,

  172. self-interest

  173. is ruled out

  174. in order that we might have a life

  175. that is Christ-focused

  176. and Christ-centric.

  177. Matthew 7 and verse 21,

  178. Jesus said,

  179. not everyone who says to me,

  180. Lord, Lord,

  181. will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  182. but he who does the will of my Father

  183. who is in heaven.

  184. Self-denial.

  185. He said,

  186. you must deny yourself,

  187. but what does that look like?

  188. I mean,

  189. in today's world,

  190. how do we translate that?

  191. What does it look like

  192. to deny ourselves?

  193. I came across a poem

  194. by Bill Britton,

  195. and I want to read it to you.

  196. You got it on the screen?

  197. You got it, okay.

  198. It's a little long.

  199. Can you bear with me?

  200. Maybe.

  201. Okay, here we go.

  202. When you are forgotten

  203. or neglected

  204. or purposely set at naught

  205. and you don't sting

  206. or hurt

  207. with the insult

  208. of the oversight,

  209. but your heart is happy

  210. being counted

  211. worthy to suffer for Christ,

  212. that is,

  213. dying to self.

  214. When your good

  215. is evil spoken of,

  216. when your wishes are crossed,

  217. your advice disregarded,

  218. or your opinions ridiculed,

  219. and you refuse to let anger

  220. rise in your heart

  221. or even to defend yourself,

  222. but take it all in patient,

  223. loving silence,

  224. this is dying to self.

  225. When you lovingly,

  226. patiently bear any disorder,

  227. any regularity,

  228. and impunctuality,

  229. or any annoyance,

  230. when you come face to face

  231. with waste,

  232. folly,

  233. extravagance,

  234. spiritual insensibility,

  235. and endure it

  236. as Jesus endured it,

  237. that's dying to self.

  238. When you are content

  239. with any food,

  240. any offering,

  241. any raiment,

  242. any climate,

  243. any society,

  244. any solitude,

  245. any interruption

  246. by the will of God,

  247. that is dying to self.

  248. When you never refer

  249. to yourself in conversation

  250. or to record

  251. your own good works

  252. or itch after commendation,

  253. when you can truly love

  254. to go unknown,

  255. that is dying to self.

  256. When you can see

  257. your brother or sister

  258. have his or her needs met

  259. and can honestly rejoice

  260. in spirit

  261. and can feel no envy,

  262. no question God,

  263. while your own needs

  264. are far greater

  265. and in more desperate

  266. circumstances,

  267. that is dying to self.

  268. When you can receive

  269. correction and reproof

  270. for one of less stature

  271. than yourself

  272. and can humbly submit

  273. inwardly as well as outwardly,

  274. finding no rebellion

  275. or resentment

  276. rising up within your heart,

  277. that is dying to self.

  278. Jesus said

  279. that we are

  280. to deny

  281. ourselves.

  282. That's what

  283. we do

  284. when we follow Jesus.

  285. We deny ourselves.

  286. The second thing is

  287. to bear the cross.

  288. Notice what he says

  289. in the text.

  290. If anyone wishes

  291. to come after me,

  292. let him deny himself

  293. and take up

  294. his cross.

  295. That's been

  296. misinterpreted a lot.

  297. Some people

  298. will talk about this,

  299. oh, that's my cross

  300. I have to bear.

  301. And they talk about

  302. an illness they have,

  303. a condition they have,

  304. someone they have

  305. to care for

  306. or circumstances

  307. they're in.

  308. That's not the cross.

  309. And then other people say

  310. I'm going to carry

  311. the cross of Jesus.

  312. No, you can't.

  313. That one's already taken

  314. and there was only one person

  315. that could carry that cross.

  316. But what it says,

  317. let him take up

  318. his cross.

  319. And there's no question,

  320. there's no doubt

  321. that in the

  322. New Testament world

  323. when they said cross,

  324. what they meant

  325. was an instrument

  326. of execution.

  327. In other words,

  328. when you take up

  329. your cross,

  330. you are committed

  331. to something

  332. to the point

  333. of death.

  334. And that's what

  335. Jesus meant.

  336. The cross

  337. was an instrument

  338. of capital punishment.

  339. The new

  340. Greek international

  341. commentary

  342. said the phrase

  343. is used literally

  344. of carrying

  345. one's cross

  346. to the place

  347. of execution.

  348. and it's a daily

  349. experience.

  350. Not a one-time

  351. experience,

  352. but every day

  353. we pick up

  354. our cross,

  355. our commitment

  356. to Christ

  357. to the point

  358. of death

  359. and we walk.

  360. Deny ourselves,

  361. take up

  362. our cross

  363. and then follow

  364. Christ.

  365. I'm not a

  366. Greek grammarian

  367. or a Greek scholar

  368. but I own

  369. shelves of books

  370. by people who are.

  371. So when I studied

  372. this passage,

  373. I realized

  374. that this is

  375. a present

  376. tense verb

  377. that's in the

  378. imperative

  379. which means

  380. it is a commandment

  381. to keep on doing,

  382. keep on doing,

  383. keep on doing.

  384. We sing

  385. wherever he leads,

  386. I'll go.

  387. But far too often

  388. we don't mean

  389. a word of it

  390. when we sing it.

  391. We're called

  392. to live the life

  393. of love.

  394. Not a feeling

  395. that rises up

  396. inside of us

  397. not something

  398. the culture

  399. has defined

  400. for us

  401. but love

  402. as exhibited

  403. and explained

  404. in Jesus Christ

  405. and his word.

  406. in fact,

  407. 1 John 4, 19

  408. says we love

  409. because he first

  410. loved us.

  411. Follow.

  412. That's what we're

  413. called to do.

  414. Deny ourselves.

  415. Take up our cross

  416. and follow him.

  417. The second thing

  418. is follower.

  419. It is who a disciple is.

  420. If you are a Christian,

  421. if you are born again,

  422. you are a follower

  423. follower of Jesus

  424. and part of that word

  425. disciple means to follow,

  426. means to learn

  427. and follow.

  428. If you and I

  429. and we do

  430. and we for many,

  431. many years

  432. across centuries,

  433. when we have a relationship

  434. with Christ,

  435. we call ourselves what?

  436. Christian.

  437. Thank you.

  438. Christian.

  439. Christian.

  440. Do you know

  441. the word Christian

  442. is only mentioned

  443. three times in the Bible?

  444. Three times

  445. and in every situation

  446. it seems that it's used

  447. as a term of derision,

  448. little Christ.

  449. Used to put them down.

  450. But the term follower

  451. or disciple

  452. is used nearly 300 times

  453. in the New Testament.

  454. Imagine if you and I

  455. are talking to someone

  456. and they say,

  457. well,

  458. tell me something

  459. about yourself

  460. and you say,

  461. well,

  462. I'm a follower of Jesus.

  463. What do you think

  464. they're going to think?

  465. That you're a nut?

  466. Maybe.

  467. But if you say,

  468. I'm a follower of Jesus

  469. and they have enough

  470. respect for you,

  471. they'll say,

  472. what does that mean?

  473. Then you get to share

  474. the gospel with them.

  475. If you say,

  476. I'm a Christian,

  477. they just kind of like

  478. water off a duck's back.

  479. It just rolls off.

  480. We are followers

  481. of Jesus Christ

  482. and that means four things.

  483. A follower of Jesus Christ

  484. is a person

  485. who is more than a crowd.

  486. More than a crowd.

  487. In Matthew chapter 8

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  488. and verse 1,

  489. when he came down

  490. from the mountain,

  491. great multitudes

  492. followed him.

  493. But here's the question.

  494. Were they all disciples?

  495. When he came down

  496. from the mountain,

  497. great multitudes

  498. followed him

  499. and even in Mark 8 here,

  500. he said with the crowd

  501. and his disciples,

  502. once Jesus got his momentum

  503. on this earth,

  504. there was always

  505. a crowd around him.

  506. Were they disciples?

  507. And the answer is no,

  508. they weren't

  509. because they didn't

  510. follow him.

  511. In fact,

  512. they even turned on him.

  513. In Matthew 27

  514. and verse 22,

  515. Pilate said to them,

  516. that is the crowd

  517. of the multitude,

  518. what shall I do

  519. with Jesus

  520. who is called the Christ?

  521. And they all said,

  522. crucify him.

  523. You remember

  524. what many days

  525. removed from that

  526. when he came

  527. into Jerusalem

  528. and the crowds

  529. lined the street

  530. and they praised him

  531. and now

  532. some of the same people

  533. are saying,

  534. crucify him.

  535. A disciple is more

  536. than part of a crowd

  537. and crowd mentality

  538. is a dangerous thing.

  539. Do you remember

  540. 1977, 1978,

  541. there was a man

  542. named Jim Jones.

  543. Does anybody

  544. remember that?

  545. He started out

  546. in either Indiana

  547. or Illinois

  548. and he moved

  549. to California

  550. and he started

  551. something called

  552. a People's Temple

  553. and he gained

  554. the support

  555. of local politicians

  556. and even state politicians

  557. and even

  558. some in Congress

  559. and he had

  560. followers,

  561. lots of followers

  562. and they were

  563. brainwashed

  564. and the man

  565. became so enamored

  566. with his own power

  567. that he began

  568. to ask people

  569. to call him

  570. Father.

  571. He implied to them

  572. that he was

  573. God.

  574. He performed

  575. phony miracles.

  576. One that is

  577. noted,

  578. is certified,

  579. is he

  580. purportedly

  581. removed

  582. a cancerous tumor

  583. from somebody's side

  584. behind this sheet

  585. and he had

  586. his assistants

  587. helping him

  588. and what they

  589. found out later

  590. was he took

  591. a bloody chicken

  592. liver

  593. and put it

  594. on the side

  595. of the person

  596. and pulled it

  597. out

  598. and the person

  599. said,

  600. I'm healed

  601. and he held

  602. up the chicken

  603. liver

  604. and threw it

  605. away.

  606. False prophet.

  607. When things

  608. got hot in

  609. California,

  610. he moved

  611. down to

  612. South America

  613. and created

  614. a place

  615. in Guyana

  616. called

  617. Jonestown.

  618. Congressman

  619. Leo Ryan

  620. and some

  621. other people

  622. on the

  623. delegation,

  624. they heard

  625. so many

  626. reports of

  627. abuse,

  628. they flew

  629. down there

  630. to see

  631. what was

  632. going on

  633. and the

  634. result of

  635. that is

  636. the congressman

  637. was killed,

  638. many other

  639. people and

  640. by the end

  641. of the time,

  642. 918 people

  643. either were

  644. shot or

  645. committed suicide

  646. including Jones

  647. himself.

  648. He was a

  649. false prophet.

  650. Jonestown

  651. was a false

  652. coalition of

  653. people.

  654. They found

  655. themselves not

  656. following Jesus

  657. but following a

  658. man and they

  659. found themselves

  660. following a

  661. man that was

  662. not only

  663. deluded but

  664. was himself

  665. evil.

  666. But it was

  667. a crowd

  668. and crowd

  669. mentality is

  670. dangerous.

  671. J.

  672. Vernon

  673. McGee and

  674. what I'm

  675. going to read

  676. to you,

  677. he wrote

  678. about 25

  679. or 30

  680. years ago.

  681. He said,

  682. freedom is

  683. not following

  684. a multitude

  685. to do evil.

  686. If we were

  687. to follow

  688. God's precept,

  689. it would put

  690. us out of

  691. the marching,

  692. protesting,

  693. and rioting

  694. business.

  695. Because it's

  696. not the

  697. crowd,

  698. it's

  699. disciples,

  700. it's people

  701. who follow

  702. Jesus and

  703. it's one

  704. by one,

  705. a change

  706. of heart,

  707. a change

  708. of heart,

  709. a change

  710. of heart

  711. that continues

  712. to deny

  713. self and

  714. take up the

  715. cross and

  716. follow him.

  717. It's a

  718. person that's

  719. more than a

  720. crowd.

  721. But a

  722. disciple is

  723. someone who

  724. believes,

  725. not just

  726. reacts.

  727. I've

  728. seen it

  729. in my

  730. ministry

  731. through the

  732. years.

  733. There are

  734. people that

  735. will come

  736. to a

  737. service,

  738. maybe the

  739. music is

  740. just right,

  741. maybe the

  742. preaching is

  743. real strong,

  744. maybe there's

  745. an emotional

  746. appeal,

  747. and somebody

  748. will respond,

  749. and they'll

  750. get all

  751. excited,

  752. and they

  753. burn out

  754. quickly,

  755. and you

  756. don't see

  757. them again.

  758. Matthew

  759. 8 and

  760. verse 19,

  761. Scripture

  762. says,

  763. a certain

  764. scribe came

  765. to him and

  766. said,

  767. Teacher,

  768. I will

  769. follow you

  770. wherever you

  771. go.

  772. Now,

  773. if you'll

  774. notice something

  775. in that,

  776. this is a

  777. guy,

  778. Jesus is

  779. walking along

  780. the road,

  781. and there's

  782. a crowd,

  783. and he

  784. comes by

  785. this guy,

  786. and he

  787. says,

  788. Teacher,

  789. I'll follow

  790. you wherever

  791. you go.

  792. Jesus

  793. didn't even

  794. call him.

  795. He

  796. volunteered.

  797. I'll

  798. follow you

  799. wherever you

  800. go.

  801. He reacted.

  802. He wasn't

  803. committed to,

  804. but he was

  805. reacting to

  806. something inside

  807. of himself.

  808. In fact,

  809. Jesus would

  810. tell that

  811. man,

  812. in verse

  813. 20,

  814. the foxes

  815. have holes

  816. and the

  817. birds of

  818. the air

  819. have nests,

  820. but the

  821. Son of

  822. Man has

  823. nowhere to

  824. lay his

  825. head.

  826. It was

  827. like Jesus

  828. was saying,

  829. look,

  830. you don't

  831. know what

  832. you're getting

  833. into.

  834. You don't

  835. know what

  836. it means to

  837. follow me.

  838. You've just

  839. volunteered for

  840. something that

  841. you have no

  842. idea what

  843. it's about.

  844. And you

  845. notice something

  846. else about

  847. this when

  848. this person

  849. volunteered.

  850. Jesus didn't

  851. jump up and

  852. down and say,

  853. oh,

  854. goody,

  855. I've got

  856. another one

  857. in my

  858. group.

  859. He didn't

  860. say that.

  861. He said,

  862. you better

  863. watch it.

  864. Do you

  865. know what

  866. you're getting

  867. in for?

  868. I don't

  869. even have a

  870. place to

  871. sleep tonight.

  872. Disciple is

  873. someone who

  874. believes,

  875. not just

  876. reacts.

  877. And then it's

  878. a witness who

  879. realizes dangers

  880. occur.

  881. It's dangerous

  882. to be a

  883. follower of

  884. Jesus.

  885. You will get

  886. your feelings

  887. hurt.

  888. You will be

  889. misunderstood.

  890. You will

  891. be persecuted

  892. for something

  893. that you

  894. didn't even

  895. know you

  896. did.

  897. You will

  898. be lied

  899. about if

  900. you follow

  901. Jesus.

  902. The

  903. disciples

  904. learned this.

  905. They learned

  906. their dangers

  907. in following

  908. Jesus.

  909. Here's one of

  910. the ways they

  911. learned it.

  912. Back in

  913. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  914. 8 and verse

  915. 23,

  916. he got into

  917. the boat and

  918. the disciples

  919. followed him.

  920. they did

  921. not know

  922. what was

  923. coming but

  924. a sea

  925. quake

  926. occurred.

  927. A lay

  928. lapse and

  929. it says

  930. and they

  931. were very

  932. afraid.

  933. Here they

  934. are sailing

  935. out on the

  936. sea of

  937. Galilee.

  938. Everything's

  939. going good.

  940. Jesus is

  941. asleep in

  942. the stern

  943. of the

  944. boat.

  945. This

  946. terrible storm

  947. comes up and

  948. some of these

  949. experienced

  950. fishermen are

  951. afraid.

  952. They said

  953. Lord we

  954. perish unless

  955. you help

  956. them.

  957. So they

  958. woke them

  959. up.

  960. Jesus woke

  961. up.

  962. You know

  963. I often

  964. wonder how

  965. could he

  966. sleep through

  967. a storm like

  968. that?

  969. Because he's

  970. God.

  971. He is the

  972. embodiment of

  973. perfect peace.

  974. So he gets

  975. up and he

  976. says to the

  977. wind stop and

  978. he says to the

  979. sea be still and

  980. now they're

  981. sailing on

  982. mirror water and

  983. there's no wind.

  984. It was a

  985. miracle but then

  986. he turned and

  987. he looked to his

  988. disciples and he

  989. said why are

  990. you timid ye

  991. men of little

  992. faith?

  993. They were his

  994. chosen disciples.

  995. They would

  996. grow.

  997. They would

  998. change.

  999. They would

  1000. continue being

  1001. disciples and

  1002. growing and

  1003. growing.

  1004. until as far

  1005. as we know

  1006. all of them

  1007. died, were

  1008. martyred for

  1009. their faith, for

  1010. following Jesus.

  1011. A witness who

  1012. realizes this

  1013. danger.

  1014. But then the

  1015. fourth thing is a

  1016. believer who is

  1017. growing in faith.

  1018. You look at the

  1019. life of Jesus and

  1020. he finally comes to

  1021. that place where

  1022. he's arrested,

  1023. goes to the

  1024. mockery of a

  1025. trial.

  1026. They find him

  1027. guilty.

  1028. They sentence

  1029. him to

  1030. execution.

  1031. He dies on

  1032. the cross.

  1033. They thought

  1034. they killed

  1035. him but it

  1036. was a

  1037. predetermined

  1038. plan of

  1039. God that he

  1040. died in our

  1041. place for our

  1042. sins.

  1043. Put him in a

  1044. grave and he

  1045. rose from the

  1046. dead and then

  1047. he appeared to

  1048. the disciples and

  1049. then move forward

  1050. in the scene and

  1051. Peter and some of

  1052. the others go out

  1053. fishing one morning

  1054. and they look just

  1055. on the shore and

  1056. they see a figure

  1057. and Peter realizes

  1058. it's Jesus.

  1059. And he said it's

  1060. the master and he

  1061. jumps in the water

  1062. and goes to Jesus

  1063. and sits there.

  1064. Jesus made

  1065. breakfast for them

  1066. and after breakfast

  1067. Jesus asked Simon

  1068. Peter three

  1069. questions.

  1070. I think it makes

  1071. a difference in

  1072. the Greek because

  1073. there are two

  1074. different Greek

  1075. words in play

  1076. here.

  1077. Jesus said Simon

  1078. do you love me?

  1079. And he used that

  1080. word agape.

  1081. Simon do you love

  1082. me?

  1083. Simon Peter answered

  1084. and said Lord you

  1085. know I have great

  1086. affection for you.

  1087. Jesus said then

  1088. take care of my

  1089. sheep.

  1090. Second time Jesus

1091. said do you love me?

  1092. Do you agape me?

  1093. Simon Peter said

  1094. Lord you know I

  1095. have a great

  1096. affection for you.

  1097. He said well take

  1098. care of my sheep.

  1099. The third time Jesus

  1100. said Peter do you

  1101. have a great

  1102. affection for me?

  1103. And Peter said

  1104. Lord you know.

  1105. He said then

  1106. tend my sheep.

  1107. Now after that

  1108. Jesus has some

  1109. tough news for

  1110. Peter.

  1111. He told him

  1112. Peter this is how

  1113. you're going to die.

  1114. You're going to die

  1115. following me.

  1116. This is what they're

1117. going to do to you.

  1118. They're going to

  1119. crucify you.

  1120. You're going to die

  1121. following me.

  1122. That's hard news.

  1123. That's tough news to

  1124. get.

  1125. What was his future

  1126. like?

1127. He knew he was going

  1128. to die for Jesus.

  1129. He just got some

  1130. really bad news.

  1131. And then Jesus said

  1132. to Peter follow me.

  1133. And Peter still

  1134. hasn't grown to the

  1135. point that he would

  1136. grow one day.

  1137. He says looking at

  1138. John Lord what about

  1139. that man?

  1140. Doesn't that sound

  1141. like us?

  1142. There's some bad

  1143. things happen to us

1144. and we may pray to

  1145. God and say what

  1146. about him?

  1147. He's worse than I am.

  1148. Jesus' answer is

  1149. well it's perfect.

  1150. Jesus said to Peter

1151. if I want him to

  1152. remain until I come

1153. what is that to you?

  1154. Follow me.

  1155. It's not what's

  1156. happening to somebody

  1157. else that determines

  1158. our relationship with

  1159. God.

  1160. It's the quality of

  1161. our following him

  1162. ourselves.

  1163. Followers of Jesus.

  1164. That's what we're

  1165. called to be.

1166. And the last thing I

1167. want you to see is

  1168. followed.

  1169. If I weren't a

  1170. Baptist I'd get

  1171. excited about this

  1172. verse.

  1173. The most forgotten

  1174. verse is the

  1175. probably in the

  1176. whole book of

  1177. Psalms.

  1178. Certainly in

  1179. Psalm 23

    Psalms 23:6

  1180. verse 6.

  1181. Surely or only

  1182. goodness and

  1183. loving kindness

  1184. mercy will follow

1185. me all the days of

  1186. my life and I

  1187. will dwell in the

  1188. house of the Lord

  1189. forever.

  1190. The older

  1191. theologians used

  1192. to call this

  1193. loving kindness

  1194. or goodness and

  1195. mercy.

  1196. They used to call

  1197. that the hounds

  1198. of heaven.

  1199. And he says

  1200. will follow me.

  1201. Same emphasis

  1202. of the word.

  1203. Will chase after

  1204. me.

  1205. Will hunt me

  1206. down.

  1207. That's for us who

  1208. follow Jesus.

  1209. Something's following

  1210. us.

  1211. And God's put on

  1212. our trail

  1213. goodness and

  1214. mercy.

  1215. We don't usually

  1216. see it until we

  1217. look back but it's

  1218. always following

  1219. us.

  1220. It's a promise we

  1221. can believe.

  1222. Goodness supplies our

  1223. needs.

  1224. And loving kindness

  1225. or mercy blots out

  1226. our sins.

  1227. They follow us.

  1228. That's comforting.

  1229. That's encouraging.

  1230. That's helpful to

  1231. know that whatever

  1232. I'm going through or

  1233. whatever I'm facing

  1234. whatever turn the

  1235. road takes in life

  1236. that I'm traveling

  1237. behind me following

  1238. on my trail pursuing

  1239. me chasing after me

  1240. is goodness and

  1241. mercy.

1242. I asked Brian if he

  1243. would sing that song

  1244. Angels from the

  1245. Realm of Glory this

  1246. morning.

  1247. You might wonder

  1248. why are we singing

  1249. a Christmas song and

  1250. it's not even

  1251. December?

  1252. Well I asked him

  1253. to.

  1254. And the reason I

  1255. did is because I

  1256. think there's a

  1257. story that illustrates

  1258. Psalm 23 6 very

  1259. good.

1260. There was a man who

  1261. lived in the 1800s.

  1262. He died in 1864.

  1263. His name is a

  1264. British journalist

  1265. named James

  1266. Montgomery.

  1267. His parents were

  1268. Moravian missionaries.

  1269. They died on the

1270. mission field and as a

  1271. result he ended up

  1272. going from house to

  1273. house sometimes

  1274. living on the street

  1275. sometimes homeless.

  1276. At 21 he was a

  1277. failure at school.

  1278. He kept trying to

  1279. keep failing.

  1280. At 21 he got a job

  1281. at a radical

  1282. newspaper.

  1283. I think that's what

  1284. happened to people

  1285. that can't get a job

  1286. anywhere else.

1287. They get a job with

  1288. the Baptist Courier

  1289. or newspaper or

  1290. something.

1291. But he got a job at

  1292. a radical newspaper

  1293. called the Sheffield

  1294. Register.

  1295. Under pressure the

  1296. editor sold the

  1297. paper to Montgomery.

  1298. He somehow got

  1299. enough money together

  1300. and bought the

  1301. paper.

  1302. At 23 he was

  1303. fined $100 and

  1304. sentenced to three

  1305. months in jail for

  1306. his writings.

  1307. Radical writings.

  1308. And they were

  1309. radical because they

  1310. were so Christian.

1311. At age 25 he was

  1312. fined $150 and

  1313. sentenced to six

  1314. months in prison.

  1315. And during those

  1316. six months in prison

  1317. he started writing a

  1318. book.

  1319. He called it,

  1320. he called his book

  1321. Prison Amusements

  1322. and had it published.

  1323. And when he got

  1324. out of prison to

  1325. his surprise the

  1326. book was a

  1327. bestseller.

  1328. The newspaper

  1329. circulation was the

  1330. highest it had ever

  1331. been and he had

  1332. become a celebrity.

  1333. He said I almost

  1334. wrote the judge who

  1335. sentenced me a

  1336. thank you note for

  1337. sending me to prison.

  1338. He grew stronger and

  1339. stronger in his

  1340. Christian faith.

1341. By the age of 40

  1342. it's written of him

  1343. that he was the

  1344. leading citizen in

  1345. Sheffield.

  1346. He was recognized

  1347. even though he was

  1348. not a preacher.

  1349. He was recognized as

  1350. a careful student of

  1351. the word of God.

1352. And at 45 he wrote

  1353. something that was

  1354. in 1816 that continues

  1355. to live today.

  1356. Angels from the

  1357. realm of glory.

1358. He wrote that on the

  1359. Christmas Eve edition

  1360. of the Sheffield

  1361. Register.

  1362. in James Montgomery's

  1363. life as he followed

  1364. Jesus and all the

  1365. bad things that

  1366. happened to him

  1367. there were hounds

  1368. from heaven that

  1369. kept on his trail

  1370. and he was blessed.

1371. And he gave us a

  1372. song that lives on

  1373. until today.

1374. Well the last part of

  1375. followed the reality

  1376. of hope.

1377. I will dwell in the

  1378. house of the Lord

  1379. forever.

1380. Or I will dwell in the

  1381. family of the Lord

  1382. forever.

  1383. It's confident assurance.

  1384. The reality of hope.

  1385. Goodness and mercy will

1386. follow me all the days

  1387. of my life.

  1388. That's encouraging

  1389. enough.

1390. And then I will dwell in

1391. the house of the Lord

  1392. forever.

  1393. forever.

  1394. Can I tell you

  1395. something?

  1396. It doesn't get any

  1397. better than that.

  1398. That's good.

  1399. That's encouraging.

  1400. That gives us

  1401. confidence.

  1402. Charles Spurgeon is my

  1403. pastor of history.

  1404. And I've been going

  1405. through Spurgeon for the

  1406. last two years reading

  1407. in my devotions.

  1408. But Spurgeon said

  1409. this.

  1410. Question.

  1411. When we die.

  1412. Then he said.

  1413. While I'm here I will

1414. be a child of God at

  1415. home with my God.

  1416. The whole world will

1417. be his house to me.

1418. And when I ascend into

  1419. the upper chamber I

  1420. shall not change my

  1421. company nor even change

  1422. the house.

1423. I'll only go to dwell in

1424. the upper story of the

  1425. house of the Lord

  1426. forever.

1427. Boy that blessed me when

  1428. I read that.

1429. It says I'm in the

  1430. house of God now.

1431. I'm in the family of

  1432. God now.

  1433. And then when I die I'm

  1434. just going to go

  1435. upstairs.

  1436. What a thought.

  1437. What a God.

  1438. What a great opportunity

1439. to be a follower of

  1440. Jesus Christ.

  1441. That's the path of

  1442. discipleship.

  1443. Something follows us.

  1444. Goodness and mercy.

  1445. Someone has called us

  1446. Jesus Christ.

  1447. Something has been

  1448. explained very vividly

  1449. to us.

  1450. Deny yourself.

  1451. Take up your cross.

  1452. Follow him.

  1453. Simple isn't it?

1454. But we can't do it

  1455. without the power of

  1456. his Holy Spirit.

  1457. Not just one day.

  1458. But every single day.

1459. I want you to bow your

  1460. heads with me.

  1461. Our musicians are going

1462. to play something for us.

1463. And Roger Smith is going

1464. to come and lead us in

  1465. prayer.

1466. But I want you to think

  1467. about this.

  1468. Think about these words.

  1469. Deny myself.

  1470. Take up my cross.

1471. Be committed to the point

  1472. of death.

  1473. And follow Jesus.

  1474. Deny myself.

  1475. Take up the cross.

  1476. Follow Jesus.

  1477. Think about those words.

  1478. Ask yourself,

  1479. am I doing it?

  1480. Lord, help me

  1481. to do it.

  1482. Father, take your word.

1483. Apply it to our heart.

  1484. Move us

  1485. to see and do

1486. what you want us to be.

  1487. help us truly

1488. to be disciples of yours

  1489. who deny ourselves

1490. and take up our cross

  1491. and follow you.
