  1. I want you to keep the words, the message of that song in your mind

  2. because part of this message will touch on that.

  3. Thinking about, as Christians, heaven in a positive way, being a home.

  4. Over the past several months, several of our church members have died.

  5. In fact, let's just say beginning about Thanksgiving until right now.

  6. To the best of my memory, we've had more church family members to die

  7. than in any period like this, this two or three month period in the last 25 years.

  8. Two of the most common words that describe what family members are going through

  9. right after the death of a loved one are sadness and grief.

  10. It's just part of being a human being, isn't it?

  11. It's sad when your loved one dies.

  12. There's a certain amount of grief in just about every death.

  13. However, in each of the services that I've been a part of, the funeral services that is,

  14. I've also seen Christians rejoicing,

  15. seen real joy in the family members of the person who died.

  16. Now, don't misunderstand.

  17. Funerals are not happy places,

  18. but I think it's great when a funeral service has laughter.

  19. I think it sort of eases some of the tension.

  20. It helps you to relax.

  21. There's some things in a funeral about the person who's died

  22. or a family member that you point out that's funny,

  23. and it's like everybody wants to laugh.

  24. They laugh harder during those times because it's like a stress relief.

  25. But funerals are not funny places.

  26. They're not happy places.

  27. But when Christians attend the funeral of a Christian loved one,

  28. there are at least two reasons to rejoice.

  29. Number one, that parent or grandparent, spouse or friend who was a Christian,

  30. you know that at that moment they're in heaven.

  31. Whenever they close their eyes in death to this world,

  32. they open them immediately in the presence of Jesus.

  33. And that's reason to rejoice, for that person at least.

  34. But there's another reason to rejoice.

  35. If you're a Christian, they are, you know that one day,

  36. you're going to see them again.

  37. And in case like my parents whose bodies and minds were worn out,

  38. when I see them again,

  39. they'll be in the best shape I've ever seen.

  40. No more than they've ever known.

  41. That's the reason to rejoice, isn't it?

  42. The idea of rejoicing at a funeral,

  43. it really helps us to understand that there's a difference between

  44. the word happiness, like we use it,

  45. and Christian joy.

  46. I've pointed it out the last two weeks.

  47. Happiness is an emotion of delight.

  48. It's really dependent on what's happening around about us,

  49. if life's going our way or not.

  50. But Christian joy is more of an attitude,

  51. more of even a character quality.

  52. It's part of the fruit of the Spirit.

  53. The Spirit of the Lord, the Holy Spirit lives within us

  54. and enables us to experience this kind of joy

  55. that is not dependent on our circumstances.

  56. It's a joy that has a lot in common with peace within our soul

  57. that we experience when we know we're not just right with God,

  58. but that we're close to Him.

  59. Now, that explains how Paul could make joy one of the themes of his letter to the Philippian Christians.

  60. Even as he wrote from the hardship of being in prison,

  61. awaiting on a trial that could end in his death.

  62. I want you to turn, if you would, back one more time to Philippians 1, verses 18-26.

    Philippians 1:18–26

  63. Philippians 1, verses 12-18, he talks about some reasons why he rejoiced.

    Philippians 1:12–18

  64. The gospel was being preached,

  65. some of them sometimes not by good motives,

  66. but nonetheless, people were hearing about the Lord,

  67. lives were being changed, he was happy.

  68. And he rejoiced.

  69. He was both happy and he rejoiced.

  70. Well, now we're looking at some other reasons why he rejoices.

  71. We're looking in the middle of verse 18.

  72. If you've got a Bible translation that is in paragraphs,

  73. most likely the new paragraph begins in the middle of verse 18.

  74. Yes, and I will rejoice,

  75. for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

  76. this will turn out for my deliverance,

  77. as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed,

  78. but that with full courage, now as always,

  79. Christ will be honored in my body,

  80. whether by life or by death.

  81. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  82. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me,

  83. yet which I shall choose, I cannot tell.

  84. I am hard-pressed between the two.

  85. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.

  86. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.

  87. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all

  88. for your progress and joy in the faith,

  89. so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus

  90. because of my coming to you again.

  91. I want us to look at three reasons why Paul had joy even as a prisoner.

  92. Let's think about it by asking ourselves three questions.

  93. Number one, do thoughts that God will always take care of you bring you joy?

  94. We looked at that the last two weeks.

  95. The idea, no matter what, God is going to take care of me.

  96. My hand's in His life.

  97. Does that bring you joy?

  98. Well, it should.

  99. Verses 18 through 20.

  100. We're not going to look at it anymore.

  101. We've done enough.

  102. Let's move on.

  103. Number two, do thoughts of your relationship with Jesus Christ both now and in heaven bring you joy?

  104. Look at verse 21.

  105. He says, for me to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  106. We're going to spend most of our time right there on that one verse today.

  107. So what I want to do is just sort of say, pause.

  108. Let's come back to it.

  109. Look at verse 3 for just a moment.

  110. Or look at number 3, verses 22 through 26.

  111. Do thoughts of serving other people, even putting other people ahead of yourself,

  112. does that bring you joy?

  113. Paul wants his friends in this church that he's writing to to know that he's having a hard time deciding

  114. what would be the best outcome of his trial before the emperor.

  115. Look at it again.

  116. Verses 22 and 23.

  117. Yet which I shall choose, I cannot tell.

  118. I am hard pressed between the two.

  119. Now I want you to think about what he's saying.

  120. Paul is saying, I can't figure out what would be best for me to live or die.

  121. As if he had that power to make the decision.

  122. He does it.

  123. He's a prisoner.

  124. The emperor will decide.

  125. I think what Paul is talking about is, he doesn't know how to pray.

  126. He doesn't know whether to pray that he'll live or for God to just go ahead and let him die.

  127. But one of two things is going to happen.

  128. He's either going to be sentenced to death or he's going to be set free.

  129. Here's what I want you to know.

  130. Surprisingly, unbelievably, he speaks of both in positive terms.

  131. If he's sentenced to death, it's going to result in him immediately going into the presence of the Lord.

  132. And that is his desired outcome.

  133. Look at it.

  134. Verse 23.

  135. My desire is to depart and be with Christ.

  136. That is far better.

  137. Real clear.

  138. If he gets his druthers, that's what he wants to happen.

  139. If he's set free though, there's going to be a good outcome.

  140. It will result in his continuing in what he calls fruitful ministry.

  141. And it will benefit his friends there and Phil that he's writing to.

  142. Look at this.

  143. Verse 22.

  144. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me.

  145. Verse 24.

  146. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.

  147. I think the way to take this is Paul is struggling over how to pray.

  148. What should I ask God to do in terms of the outcome of this trial?

  149. It's sort of like as he's writing this, he is intentionally thinking out loud.

  150. He wants those people to understand what's going through his mind, the process he's going through.

  151. He's asking.

  152. On one hand, should I ask God for what I really want to do, which is to die now and immediately be with the Lord?

  153. Now, you might think, is he just crazy to actually pray to die right now?

  154. And to die right now for him, keep this in mind, it would be by execution.

  155. Which most likely would be to be beheaded.

  156. Lord, should I pray that I'll just go ahead and die now and go be with the Lord?

  157. And that is, look at it.

  158. That'd be far better, he said.

  159. Here's why he said that.

  160. If you've read Paul's letters in the New Testament, read about his life and ministry in the book of Acts,

  161. he lived an unbelievably hard life.

  162. I mean, he writes about some of the things he went through.

  163. He was beaten, flogged on numerous times.

  164. He was stoned in the midst of a mob riot and one time left for dead.

  165. Drug out of the city and left for dead.

  166. He talks about being cold.

  167. He talks about being in prison multiple times.

  168. He lived a hard life.

  169. And so, as he thought about the way life had been as a Christian for him,

  170. it's probably not going to change.

  171. He thought to himself, I'm tired of getting beat up, being mistreated, being cold and hungry at times.

  172. I'd welcome death.

  173. I'd be through with all this junk.

  174. I'd be in heaven.

  175. I'd be with the Lord.

  176. Life would be better than it's ever been.

  177. Some of us in this room, we've had family members

  178. who have felt that way, maybe talked that way, prayed that way

  179. because of maybe a terminal illness they had,

  180. they were suffering or some other type of tragedy they were going through.

  181. They were not thinking about suicide.

  182. Don't let that thought enter your mind.

  183. Suicide is wrong.

  184. It's sinful always under every circumstance.

  185. It can never be justified.

  186. But we're talking about someone whose life is miserable.

  187. Let me give you an example.

  188. I've talked about an old uncle I had.

  189. Ninety-something years old.

  190. Highly committed Christian.

  191. Lived a very, very active life all many, many years into his 80s.

  192. Well, in his 90s, his health was broken.

  193. He's 90-something years old.

  194. He's living alone.

  195. His wife has died.

  196. He's homebound.

  197. He can't go anywhere.

  198. He can't do anything.

  199. He prayed on a regular basis.

  200. Uncle Dolan prayed on a regular basis.

  201. Lord, take me home like Richard was singing.

  202. Take me home.

  203. Take me out of this world.

  204. Bring me into your presence.

  205. Bring me there where my Christian loved ones are.

  206. And you know, I thought that was a great way to pray.

  207. You may have now or may have someday family members or friends who talk like that or pray like that,

  208. tell you they're praying like that.

  209. Never tell them that's wrong or not good or don't do that.

  210. Pray with them.

  211. That's what they want.

  212. Why would we as Christians who live a miserable existence now not want to pray and ask God to take me out of it?

  213. Why would heaven not be again like he talks about?

  214. And we'll look at it just a little bit later.

  215. That's not a crazy prayer for Paul or anyone else.

  216. But he's also thinking, should I ask God to set me free so that I continue on preaching the gospel,

  217. helping Christians to grow, straightening out trouble in some of these churches

  218. where a lot of Paul's letters were written just to straighten out problems in the church.

  219. Paul knew there's more people to reach.

  220. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, said he wanted to go to Spain.

  221. He wanted to go to what would be called today a frontier mission place,

  222. to reach an unreached people group.

  223. He wanted to go and take the gospel as far west in the Roman Empire he was aware of, basically.

  224. Start new churches there.

  225. He wanted to, as he's saying here, he wanted to help them.

  226. He wanted to straighten out some things, some of the churches.

  227. When you analyze it, Paul's dilemma was a struggle over seeking what would be best for me

  228. or what would be best for other people.

  229. And as we might expect, he chose what was best for others.

  230. Look again in verse 24.

  231. Paul found greater joy, we're saying here,

  232. in staying in this world in spite of the hardships,

  233. to be a blessing to other people, to be a benefit for other people.

  234. We need to put the interests of other people ahead of our own more than we normally do.

  235. And for some people, some people never do.

  236. It may be you, it may be somebody you know real well,

  237. just basically lives a very selfish and self-centered life.

  238. That can't be how we live and be faithful to the Lord.

  239. We need to learn to put the interests of others ahead of our own.

  240. Now Paul is actually going to command us to do this later on in chapter 2, verses 3 and 4.

  241. So we're going to look at that in greater detail when we get to that in two or three weeks.

  242. Let's go back now to point 2.

  243. Do thoughts of your relationship with Jesus Christ right now in this world,

  244. your relationship to Him by faith,

  245. does that bring you joy?

  246. And the thought of one day being with Him in heaven,

  247. seeing Him face to face,

  248. does that bring you joy?

  249. Just think about it in order.

  250. First, do you find joy in your current relationship with the Lord?

  251. Paul expressed his joy like this.

  252. We're in verse 21 and we'll be for the rest of the time.

  253. For me to live is Christ.

  254. He is really saying by that that Jesus is the center of His life.

  255. Jesus is the center and everything in His life revolves around the Lord.

  256. He is focused on knowing, loving, serving His Lord Jesus.

  257. So he wraps, sort of summarizes, you might say.

  258. For me to live is Christ.

  259. Life for Him is all about bringing glory to the Lord,

  260. pleasing Jesus.

  261. Now you know what's going to be next.

  262. Can you say for me to live is Christ?

  263. Let's back up a moment.

  264. I want to make a statement and you fill in the blank.

  265. I want you to think honestly,

  266. the way you are, just you.

  267. Think to yourself,

  268. for me to live is blank.

  269. How would you honestly fill in that blank?

  270. For me to live is what?

  271. Would you say for me to live is family?

  272. For me to live is work?

  273. For me to live is sports?

  274. For me to live is what?

  275. You know what's near and dear to you.

  276. Now don't misunderstand.

  277. All these kinds of things have a place in our lives.

  278. Family and work and making a living and playing sports.

  279. There's just a lot of things that go with living life in this world that's good.

  280. That's helpful.

  281. That's fun.

  282. And none of these things are unimportant.

  283. But Jesus Christ deserves to be at the center of our lives.

  284. And it makes sense.

  285. Think about it.

  286. He is the Son of God.

  287. He left the glory of heaven to come into this world for one purpose.

  288. To die on a cross.

  289. As our substitute.

  290. To pay the penalty for our sins.

  291. He came into this world to die on a cross in your place.

  292. In my place.

  293. It's like He took our sins upon Himself.

  294. He suffered hell.

  295. Separation from God.

  296. That's why He cried out,

  297. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  298. He died for us.

  299. He arose victoriously from the grave.

  300. He ascended back into heaven.

  301. He's at the right hand of the Father now.

  302. The Bible says,

  303. Praying for us.

  304. One day He'll come back into this world.

  305. He'll make everything right.

  306. He deserves to be the Lord.

  307. The focus.

  308. The center of our lives, doesn't He?

  309. You know, I think all of us

  310. could profit

  311. from making it our consistent prayer

  312. and a real heartfelt desire

  313. to live each day consciously.

  314. More focused on Jesus.

  315. Seeking to know Him better.

  316. To love Him more.

  317. To find ways to serve Him faithfully.

  318. And through His Spirit that indwells us

  319. to cooperate with Him

  320. and develop more Christ-like character.

  321. Things like the fruit of the Spirit.

  322. Love and joy and peace.

  323. Patience.

  324. Kindness.

  325. Goodness.

  326. Faithfulness.

  327. Gentleness.

  328. Self-control.

  329. These kind of things.

  330. You know, when Jesus is at the center

  331. of our lives like this,

  332. He will enable us

  333. to be better at everything

  334. we need to be doing.

  335. He will enable us to be better

  336. in all of our relationships.

  337. I'm a better husband.

  338. I'm a better grandfather.

  339. I'm a better pastor.

  340. I'm a better everything.

  341. But I'm really focused in

  342. on seeking to serve the Lord

  343. in these ways.

  344. Seeking to honor Jesus

  345. for the way that I treat people,

  346. the way that I do my job.

  347. All of us are that way.

  348. You're a better student,

  349. better at whatever you do at work,

  350. wherever you are at home,

  351. wherever you are at church.

  352. We're all better

  353. when Jesus is at the center of it.

  354. We're doing it as if we're doing it for Him.

  355. We're wanting to honor Him.

  356. Now,

  357. we can have a relationship with Jesus

  358. in this world now

  359. that brings glory to Him

  360. and really does give us

  361. satisfying joy.

  362. And that's what we should be experiencing.

  363. That's why the Lord gave us the Scripture,

  364. gave us the privilege to pray,

  365. to develop this kind of relationship with Him.

  366. Excuse me.

  367. Let's think now about our future relationship.

  368. Do you find joy in thinking about

  369. your future relationship with Jesus in heaven?

  370. Paul expresses that like this,

  371. and to die is gain.

  372. And this is,

  373. as I mentioned a minute ago,

  374. it's just amazing

  375. that Paul could say,

  376. and to die is gain,

  377. knowing that the way he's going to die

  378. in this situation would be executed.

  379. Paul's thoughts

  380. couldn't have been

  381. on the process of death,

  382. how it was going to happen.

  383. Paul's thought had to be

  384. on the person,

  385. the Lord,

  386. that he was going to be with.

  387. It's going to have to be on the,

  388. his thoughts are going to be on the,

  389. the better life that was in store for him

  390. on the other side of death.

  391. But in both life and death,

  392. he's focused on,

  393. on Jesus,

  394. his Lord,

  395. center of his life.

  396. Life in this world meant

  397. that he would live for Jesus.

  398. Death would take him out of this world

  399. where he would live with Jesus.

  400. Let's just think.

  401. Can you honestly say right now,

  402. to die is gain.

  403. And the truth is,

  404. most of us in this room,

  405. just about all of us,

  406. if not every one of us,

  407. we're not really excited

  408. about the thought of dying today.

  409. I mean, I'm not.

  410. I don't want to die today.

  411. I don't think anybody here,

  412. under normal circumstances,

  413. I mean, look,

  414. you're healthy enough to be here.

  415. You got out,

  416. there's snow on the ground.

  417. You got to be in pretty good health,

  418. mentally and physically to come.

  419. So,

  420. it wouldn't be normal

  421. if you sit there and think,

  422. oh, I wish I'd die.

  423. Death is gain.

  424. It's just normal and natural to think,

  425. I'm going to live,

  426. like Paul,

  427. I want to live now and be productive.

  428. I want to be fruitful now.

  429. It's okay.

  430. We should want to live in this world

  431. as long as we can be productive.

  432. It's not wrong.

  433. Paul is not all about dying

  434. and we shouldn't be as Christians.

  435. But the fact is,

  436. none of us are going to live in this world forever.

  437. Unless Jesus comes first,

  438. you're going to die.

  439. I am going to die.

  440. And there's not one thing in the world

  441. that can be done about it.

  442. I don't know if you ever think about this.

  443. Everybody in here,

  444. we're all aging.

  445. Some of us have gotten along further down the road,

  446. but every one of us in here,

  447. we're aging.

  448. You ever stop and think about

  449. how life has passed by so quickly?

  450. That song that Richard sang,

  451. it was,

  452. obviously,

  453. I can't even remember now.

  454. B.J. Thomas,

  455. he came out with that song

  456. or

  457. he made it popular for him

  458. when I was in seminary.

  459. I can remember him

  460. singing it on the radio.

  461. And in my mind,

  462. it just seems like it wasn't any time

  463. that I heard B.J. Thomas

  464. singing that song on the radio.

  465. But it's been

  466. 40 years.

  467. 40 years.

  468. And some people laugh,

  469. it's older than me now.

  470. But let's just think.

  471. Think about how fast

  472. our lives go by.

  473. I don't want this to be morbid,

  474. but a lot of us in here,

  475. you know,

  476. we're in that fourth quarter.

  477. So death is a reality.

  478. We should not try

  479. to ignore it

  480. because we cannot escape it.

  481. So we need to be prepared

  482. for death.

  483. Let me just say this,

  484. if you're not a Christian,

  485. the only way

  486. and the first way,

  487. the most important way

  488. you can prepare

  489. is to put your trust in Jesus

  490. as your Lord and Savior.

  491. Repent of your sins.

  492. Commit your life to Him.

  493. The only way

  494. to have a relationship

  495. with Jesus in heaven

  496. is to begin it now

  497. on earth.

  498. But as Christians,

  499. one of the best ways

  500. we can prepare for death

  501. is to think

  502. what we will gain.

  503. Now on one hand,

  504. as I said earlier,

  505. death relieves us

  506. from all pain and sorrow

  507. in this world.

  508. But even if you,

  509. if you're a Christian

  510. and you're relatively young,

  511. you in the prime of life

  512. have even reached

  513. the prime of life yet.

  514. You'd say,

  515. life is good for me.

  516. Well, if you're a Christian

  517. and you die today,

  518. life is still,

  519. or death is still

  520. going to be gain for you.

  521. Death is always,

  522. for a Christian,

  523. going to be better

  524. than what life is

  525. here on earth,

  526. even when life

  527. is at its best.

  528. Death is going to

  529. usher us

  530. to the presence

  531. of Jesus

  532. where there will

  533. only be joy

  534. and happiness.

  535. Only be that.

  536. That'll be our life

  537. from then on

  538. forever and ever.

  539. So,

  540. let's think.

  541. I need to have

  542. in my mind

  543. for me to live

  544. is Christ,

  545. but to die

  546. is gain.

  547. Don't fear death.

  548. Don't think

  549. this is something

  550. that should never

  551. be talked about.

  552. In fact,

  553. if you're a Christian,

  554. don't just dwell on it,

  555. but let your family

  556. members know

  557. my faith and trust

  558. is in Jesus

  559. and whenever I die,

  560. don't you worry

  561. about me.

  562. I'm going to be

  563. in heaven

  564. and life's going

  565. to be better

  566. than it's ever been.

  567. And if you have

  568. any doubts

  569. about their salvation,

  570. say,

  571. and I hope

  572. to see you there,

  573. but I only will

  574. if Jesus is the

  575. Lord of your life.

  576. We need to think

  577. to die is gain.

  578. Now,

  579. I want to make sure

  580. that we don't miss

  581. a vitally important

  582. point

  583. that Paul is making

  584. with this whole statement.

  585. To me to live

  586. is Christ

  587. and to die

  588. is gain.

  589. The only way

  590. death is going

  591. to be a gain

  592. for anybody

  593. is if

  594. it is centered

  595. now

  596. in Jesus.

  597. I read an article

  598. the past week

  599. or two,

  600. some of you

  601. probably read it

  602. as well,

  603. on ESPN.

  604. there was a

  605. pro football player

  606. talking about

  607. how hard

  608. it was

  609. for a lot

  610. of NFL

  611. players

  612. to retire.

  613. He was talking

  614. about just

  615. the changes

  616. they went through.

  617. It was just

  618. a traumatic

  619. experience

  620. for them to retire.

  621. And he said,

  622. and I quote,

  623. he said,

  624. for many of those men,

  625. life is

  626. football.

  627. football.

  628. And when there

  629. is no more

  630. football,

  631. they have a very

  632. difficult time

  633. living life.

  634. what we need

  635. to think is

  636. when our life

  637. comes to an end,

  638. if it's true

  639. that our life

  640. has just been

  641. about sports

  642. or work

  643. or money

  644. or popularity

  645. or anything

  646. like that,

  647. dying

  648. will only

  649. bring us

  650. loss.

  651. It will not

  652. bring us

  653. gain.

  654. if sports

  655. is your God

  656. or if you

  657. are your God

  658. or if another

  659. person is your God

  660. or something

  661. is your God,

  662. when you die,

  663. you're going

  664. to lose it all.

  665. You're going

  666. to have

  667. nothing

  668. but torment

  669. in hell

  670. if Christ

  671. is not

  672. your life.

  673. so the only

  674. way for death

  675. to be

  676. a gain

  677. is to have

  678. our faith

  679. and trust

  680. in Jesus

  681. and Him

  682. be the true

  683. Lord

  684. and focus

  685. of our lives.

  686. Now let's be

  687. real honest.

  688. For most of us,

  689. there are

  690. many days

  691. when we

  692. cannot say

  693. for me

  694. to live

  695. for me

  696. to live

  697. as Christ.

  698. Let's be all

  699. honest.

  700. I'll be

  701. at the top

  702. of the list.

  703. There's a lot

  704. of days

  705. where I cannot

  706. honestly say

  707. for me

  708. to live

  709. as Christ

  710. because He's

  711. not really

  712. the center

  713. of my life.

  714. You'll have

  715. to admit

  716. that too.

  717. We all

  718. have our

  719. struggles.

  720. Some of us

  721. more than

  722. others.

  723. So what we

  724. need to do

  725. right now

  726. is just

  727. if we

  728. can't say

  729. right now

  730. for me

  731. to live

  732. as Christ

  733. Jesus

  734. is not

  735. the center

  736. admit it

  737. to God.

  738. Confess

  739. it

  740. as sin.

  741. In fact,

  742. confess

  743. as sin

  744. whatever

  745. or whoever

  746. you have

  747. allowed to

  748. be the

  749. center of

  750. your life

  751. instead of

  752. Jesus.

  753. Repent

  754. of it.

  755. Change

  756. your mind.

  757. Change

  758. the way

  759. you're

  760. living.

  761. Ask

  762. God

  763. to help

  764. you.

  765. Then

  766. make a

  767. commitment

  768. that with

  769. God's

  770. help

  771. you're

  772. going to

  773. seek

  774. to live

  775. each

  776. day

  777. with

  778. Jesus

  779. as

  780. the

  781. center

  782. of

  783. your

  784. life.

  785. In

  786. other

  787. words,

  788. He's

  789. going to

  790. be your

  791. focus.

  792. You're

  793. going to

  794. seek

  795. to know

  796. Him

  797. better.

  798. Spend

  799. time in

  800. the Word,

  801. in prayer,

  802. talking to

  803. Him.

  804. Love

  805. Him

  806. more.

  807. Be

  808. more

  809. faithful

  810. in

  811. serving

  812. Him.

  813. In

  814. fact,

  815. do what

  816. you do

  817. for other

  818. people as

  819. God,

  820. start now.

  821. We need

  822. to do

  823. this.

  824. Start now

  825. asking God

  826. to give

  827. you the

  828. desire and

  829. the ability

  830. to live

  831. this way

  832. every day,

  833. to make

  834. it our

  835. prayer in

  836. the morning,

  837. at lunchtime,

  838. in the

  839. afternoon.

  840. You know,

  841. when we fail

  842. to live

  843. this way,

  844. and we

  845. all will

  846. at times,

  847. just confess

  848. your sin

  849. again.

  850. Some of

  851. you right

  852. now,

  853. you may

  854. be very

  855. serious

  856. about what

  857. we're

  858. talking

  859. about,

  860. and you

  861. may confess

  862. that you

  863. have allowed

  864. somebody or

  865. something to

  866. be the center

  867. of your life,

  868. and you're

  869. repenting of

  870. that.

  871. You're making

  872. Jesus,

  873. making a new

  874. commitment to

  875. Him as the

  876. Lord of

  877. your life.

  878. You want to

  879. love Him

  880. more.

  881. You want to

  882. serve Him

  883. more faithfully.

  884. But Wednesday,

  885. you may have

  886. a breakdown.

  887. You may just

  888. want to be

  889. selfish.

  890. selfish.

  891. You just

  892. may want to

  893. serve something

  894. more than

  895. Jesus.

  896. When you

  897. realize that,

  898. confess it

  899. then.

  900. Repent of

  901. it then.

  902. Come back

  903. to the

  904. Lord then.

  905. That's how

  906. we all live

  907. a Christian

  908. life.

  909. Christian

  910. life is a

  911. lifestyle of

  912. ongoing

  913. repentance and

  914. faith.

  915. It's like

  916. Chuck Swindoll

  917. says, we

  918. take three

  919. steps forward

  920. and two

  921. steps back a

  922. lot of times.

  923. by God's

  924. grace when we

  925. do that, we

  926. still make some

  927. progress.

  928. We never make

  929. just perfectly

  930. consistent progress.

  931. We're all to

  932. some degree.

  933. Three steps

  934. forward, one

  935. step back, five

  936. steps forward,

  937. three steps back,

  938. something like

  939. that.

  940. What would it

  941. take this

  942. morning to

  943. have the

  944. testimony of

  945. Paul to

  946. me to live

  947. as Christ and

  948. to die as

  949. gain?

  950. if you

  951. know there's

  952. some sin to

  953. confess, do

  954. it now, this

  955. moment.

  956. If there are

  957. some things that

  958. need to change

  959. in your life,

  960. some priorities

  961. that need to

  962. change, make

  963. the commitment.

  964. Plan now how

  965. you're going to

  966. bring about those

  967. changes.

  968. What's going to

  969. change?

  970. What are you

  971. going to do

  972. to change?

  973. Do you need

  974. to get more

  975. serious about

  976. just your

  977. relationship with

  978. Jesus?

  979. you need to

  980. really start

  981. consciously thinking

  982. more about

  983. pleasing Him

  984. instead of

  985. yourself or

  986. anyone else.

  987. Ask God,

  988. and I do

  989. this sometimes,

  990. and he do

  991. this all the

  992. time, but

  993. ask God to

  994. give you a

  995. greater desire

  996. to know and

  997. love and

  998. serve Him

  999. and be like

  1000. Jesus.

  1001. I want us to

  1002. close by praying

  1003. and asking God

  1004. to help us

  1005. to develop

  1006. and enjoy

  1007. a close

  1008. relationship with

  1009. Him and our

  1010. Lord now

  1011. and then be

  1012. able to look

  1013. forward to

  1014. the closest

  1015. relationship with

  1016. Him in heaven.

  1017. Let's pray

  1018. together.

  1019. Dear God,

  1020. as we look at

  1021. Paul's statement

  1022. about his own

  1023. life, for me to

  1024. live is Christ,

  1025. to die is

  1026. gain.

  1027. We know that

  1028. we can't say

  1029. that as often

  1030. as we should.

  1031. Lord, create

  1032. within us a

  1033. true heartfelt

  1034. desire to be

  1035. able to say

  1036. that.

  1037. Help us to

  1038. confess the

  1039. sin, make the

  1040. commitment,

  1041. rearrange priorities,

  1042. whatever it

  1043. takes to make

  1044. sure that Jesus

  1045. is the focus

  1046. of our life,

  1047. the center.

  1048. And as we

  1049. walk with

  1050. Jesus in

  1051. this world,

  1052. we seek to

  1053. be the best

  1054. that we can

  1055. be in our

  1056. homes, at

  1057. work, at

  1058. school, and

  1059. everywhere else.

  1060. So just show

  1061. us to God how

  1062. we should respond

  1063. so that this

  1064. can be our

  1065. testimony.

  1066. That's just an

  1067. attitude of

  1068. prayer.

  1069. Respond to the

  1070. Lord as we all

  1071. need to.

  1072. see fit to at

  1073. this time as

  1074. we close out

  1075. our service.

  1076. Just bow and

  1077. pray.
